No surprises at all. Sadly, not even a hint of things to come.
Have to disagree, Sam.
Thought the new origin was pretty poor. It asks for a LOT of disbelief. Like that book just being there and completely self teaching himself, then the boys. Shredder even comments that they're not very good, which...I gotta say wouldn't surprise me if you're just self taught. I also didn't like so much being tied back to April as a child and the whole "rescued them from a fire my dad set before he was killed and I ran into to get the animals out and then just set them on a sewer grate" was....reallllllly stretching. And April ALSO being the "explanation" for them loving pizza. Which we didn't really get to see them enjoy. I did like the nod to the original film with the slice on Splinter's head, though.

Only if you want to listen to the Shell Shocked song and a bit of the score and give some acknowledgement to the many people that put hours into the film.
I may have really really disliked it, but they still all did their job.
Sequel-wise, if one gets green-lit:
I'm guessing Shredder survived because there was some mutagen on his finger...well, his glove's finger, at the end. He probably has a healing factor or something now. IDW influence of him being "un-killable."
I really liked the guy that played Shredder.

I really dont see it that Way Like
Ok so For the origins Seem perfectly fine Sachs as adopted by shredder and being his Student, There potential for rivalry with KArai, also KArai being used more, The mutagen Which was an Alien substance which open plenty of doors, Disbelief IS Part of the turtle by now really there is no way around that, Splinter learning Ninjutsu From a book is no different them him Learning by watching Yoshi(which i still see him possibly being Reincarnated) They are good Shredder is just Better, They also alluded to Splinter knowing more about Shredder then A simple lab rat would have been able to But knowing Memories about a past life and figures. I think it works in this context Like IDW her father was connected the fact that she helkp them escape is nice i actually like them tying things together IMHO. I dont think its strectching i tell you if i could save pet i would I just found it neat and i liked it. And her feeding them pizza is Cute Something i could picture Fan creating them selves in Fan fiction which isn't a bad thing IMO. I think there is enough pizza loving in the movie to get the point across. I also love the pizza landing on splinter head.

I think it wopuld be cool ifBoth shredder and splinter were reincarnated, and splinter is slowly remembering aspect which is why he knows shredder a bit better the what a labrat would know. and if Shredder does gain a Healing factor it would be cool to Alot of potenial action scenes

Sorry not even I like get the comparisons But not really i mean its more likeIron man Mixed with Samurai armor which i think is Fine War Monger is Huge shredder is large but not nearly as bulky are War monger. And he was completely Bad ass in this movie and his Skills were amazing.
Any one remember WHat they call April Like that fact that she was a Spirit or something it started with an H i can remember what they call her
They best and most important part is they got the character all correct which was a major complaint. The turtles are perfect in this movie Perfect. Mikey, Raph, Leo, Donnie, Splinter, April, Shredder, and Vern lol, Are all perfect.

I'm perfectly happy to have the movie "spoiled" for me, so kudos. It's very good to know my predictions are almost all on-point. I mean, not "good" to know that... ah, whatever. I just wanna point out that judging any movie on its own based on the potential of its sequels is pretty flawed. That just means they didn't tell as much story they should have. it sounds like literally every interesting thing is "being saved for the sequel". That's awful storytelling.
And making everything about April sounds pretty lousy, also. It all just sounds so... contrived.

exactly a movie should be able to work on its own as a stand alone film..only then after the story is told, they should chose to continue it or not

But any way thats how i see it I loved the movie Nothing can bring me down from that People can and should enjoy the movie, There is plenty of potential for the Sequel and I cant wait it should be great I do wanna see all the deleted Scene or a directors cut which should rock even more then the theatrical release was which was awesome.

I think you misunderstood me, Sam. I was saying Iron Monger for the "Super Shredder" suit in the sequel since ooze was on his finger at the end.
This film, Shredder looked very much like Iron Man/Transformer with samurai vibe.
And sure, there's ways they COULD take things in the sequel, but we have no idea if that's the plan. As a stand alone film, there's just a lot of holes and gaps I didn't like. We'll have to disagree on the origin. "Rat read a book" is just too far for me. Rat watching a ninja master...there's an explanation for that...there's a NINJA MASTER. How was there a perfectly detailed book about a SECRET martial arts style so detailed a rat just masters it?
And no, we can't take the reincarnation concept into account because there's nothing within the film to indicate that. We have to only use what was offered.
I thought the characters were spot on, but also just sort of shoehorned into their stereotype. Leo was stoic leader, Raph was rebel, and Don was tech guy. Mike wasn't the laid back party dude so much as the horny teenager. Almost every scene had some comment on how he had dibs on April, she was hot, calling her his girlfriend or "angel cakes" and then the love song at the end. It was pretty overblown from his usual crush.
I liked their personalities overall. But I gotta say after a full movie of it, Shalhoub wasn't a great Splinter choice to me.
And VERY MUCH to my surprise, if they had been their proper size and without the souped up strength....I would have really dug their look. The faces actually do work well in motion. I'd still tweak their gear, and I still think the original movie looks better for them and could have been better utilized in this one, but what they had DID work.

It never ending thats FINE but people cant pretend they arent being Pessimistic when that exactly what they are doing. I just feel its better to focus on Good thing(which there are Plenty in this movie) instead of a couple bad things Which for the sake of this story are not needed, Sure they could have added it And made the movie another 1/2 hour. which could be hit or miss
THis Movie is Funny, It has Heart, There is plenty of Action, The Martial arts are fantastic Shredder is awesome, The character are Perfect, The plot is Basic(which is not bad) and straight Forward. which is fine.
I had absolutely no problem with the new origin, it works perfectly and isn't convoluted even with April being shoehorned in. Better than the Nick shows origin. My only problem is that Splinter just happens to want to learn Ninjitsu, I mean Splinter learning Ninjitsu has only ever made sense with him being Hamato Yoshi. Anyway, it makes sense that because of the mutagent hey learned Ninjitsu quickly but they could've had a scene with SPlinter seeing Shredder do Ninjitsu or something.

Having read the entire plot summarized in multiple spots, it sounds pretty weak. Until it's proven that the sequel is going to expand on the plot threads they left open - provided that they even get one - it's only fair to call them story flaws until further notice. You can't judge anything based on "potential". Literally everything has "potential".
It all seems to come down to how important the story is to the viewer in the first place. I keep hearing over and over again, "Don't go into it for the story". Well, fine, that's the most important thing to me in a movie, so I guess it's not gonna thrill me. :ohwell: I'm glad people are talking about it, though, because I'll probably be a lot less angry when I do see it, than if it was brand new to my brain. "They nailed the characters"... Hell, good job doin' what you're supposed to do, then. I'm not giving 'em bonus points for getting exactly one thing right at the expense of everything else, I don't care how pretty all of it is. I've been saying for a while, it's going to come down to the story, for me... and the story sounds supremely disappointing. :ohwell:
Anyways, again, thanks for sharing, guys.

This film, Shredder looked very much like Iron Man/Transformer with samurai vibe. Which i think works IMO, i mean the shredder in nick is huge wil retracting and sliding blades. This movie make shredder intimidating, And you known he can kick butt.
And sure, there's ways they COULD take things in the sequel, but we have no idea if that's the plan. As a stand alone film, there's just a lot of holes and gaps I didn't like.I just dont feel they are needed that like saying that we need to explain Batmans origin in the new BVS movie and we dont, delving into the mythos as we go seems like a great way to go Slowly exposing story elements

It's got funny moments.
Heart...I felt it felt hollow a lot, so not sure where I feel there.
Lots of action, yeah...it's almost nonstop action. The snow chase scene is pretty awesome, though!
Martial arts are fantastic? There's almost none. Shredder spends most of his fights throwing his magnetic knives. None of the Foot Soldiers use martial arts at all. Leo got the most opportunity to use martial arts, the other turtles did less so, with Raph having the least opportunity to show it. Which, how can you show martial arts action against machine guns? If the Foot were ninja and you had the dozens of ninjas vs 4, you'd have more opportunity. There was definitely none of the proclaimed "intense martial arts" like The Raid as they claimed. The Shredder vs turtles fight was the only real point they utilized it. We also lacked the mid-fight banter because of it.
I thought the plot was pretty weak. I guess it did reflect the cartoon...Shredder had a weird cartoon-villain plot.
I like him alot i really did. Better then Woodburn
Oh hell no, I wouldn't want Woodburn. I just didn't think Shalhoub fit well either. I prefer the cartoon or old movie style better. But I guess he's just an American New York rat with no connection to Japan or Hamato Yoshi whatsoever, so he wouldn't sound like that. >_<
One other question....why do bullets not penetrate their skin, but tranq darts do? :P

To the point about Splinter "suddenly" wanting to learn ninjutsu. I thought it was blatantly obvious how much Sachs adored his master Oroku Saki, and I find it hard to believe that the lab rat being worked on by Sachs wouldn't be exposed to much of the Foot Clans ideology and philosophy. They didn't address that directly in the film, but I don't think it would be totally out there for Splinter to take note of the book and want to learn more about it.

I just saw the movie and really enjoyed it. I want someone who keeps claiming this movie has no heart, and no story, to please EXPLAIN how? I am sick of reading these two complaints and not further delving into how there was no plot, story, or heart. I was completely satisfied with the story, and there was plenty of heart. The dynamic between Splinter, and the Turtles was great.
I liked Sacks and Shredder working together, and yes they had a typical villainous plan, but I thought they added a nice twist with Sack's coming in to look like a savior. Typically villains with a plan like Shredder had, just want the world to burn and don't really have too much of a reason.

So one thing that kinda fell flat for me was that they were going to release the toxin across New York and then save everyone after to become the good guys.... but why in hells bells would you release it out of a Sachs Industry tower? There were news helicopters flying around. No way they'd get away with it. That was the only major head scratcher for me.
Anyone have any insight to explain this away?

You don't need it because you're willing to assume the answers as you want them to be. Objectively, there's a lot of holes that don't really make sense with the context we're given is all. You can overlook them, fill in your own gaps, sure, but that's not a hallmark of a good film.
Splinter states he knew they would need to protect themselves, he found a book on ninjutsu, so he read the book and mastered it himself, then taught them. That's the reason he learned ninjutsu from a book laying in the sewer.
Though he also said they were special and destined for great things at the start. I didn't like the whole "Foot clan, because they step over others" explanation either.
It felt like there was more to the Foot Clan from what Shredder said to Karai, but no time put towards developing that. Maybe left for later, or maybe more in this film left on the editing floor. No way of knowing.

Actually their plan was as cliche as you can get for "Saturday cartoon villain." Most villains with plans like these are after A) money or B) power/world domination. Very few are just in it for chaos.

I get the same feeling. I posted in another thread if people who liked it felt like they were watching a butchered version of the film with a lot left on the editing room floor.
I do have to agree with one critic, though. The script writers and the director need to be smacked in the face with a phone book for keeping the line "Drain all their blood, even if it kills them."
.....yeah, there's not really an "even if" if you drain ALL THEIR BLOOD.
That's probably the worse line in the whole film. I'm not saying it kills the film, not at all, just that SOMEONE should have said "Guys, can we alter this line?"

Just got back from seeing the movie. My only real complaint was Shredder, he really is over-done. Leading up to release, I had liked everything I'd seen on Shredder, I think it's cool that they tried to make him more badass. But by making his suit as extravagant as it is, I think they actually ended up making him less badass. They took his humanity away. I still want to see the person wearing the armor.. not just armor.
I wish they had at least introduced him with a more traditional looking armor to give him some humanity. Sacks says to him "we're taking your armor to the next level". What did it look like before that?! Show us!!
I also didn't love Splinter's voice. It was okay, definitely could have been better.
Aaaand.. I did want more pizza..
Otherwise, I really enjoyed it. I think it had a great tone for a Turtles movie, it was fun. I like this origin story. I think Megan Fox did well with the role of April. I don't have many complaints. I suppose I could pick it apart for every single little thing that is different or new for this story, or the fact that many parts of the story are unrealistic. I don't understand what some people are expecting from a TMNT movie, honestly... I went in looking for a movie that would be fun to watch. That is what I got. You don't need it because you're willing to assume the answers as you want them to be. Objectively, there's a lot of holes that don't really make sense with the context we're given is all. You can overlook them, fill in your own gaps, sure, but that's not a hallmark of a good film.
Avoiding actually giving reasons. If you need a movie to be 3 hours long and show you and explain everything to you, that's a you problem. This isn't Inception, it's TMNT. It's pretty straight forward. I love people saying "well all the other versions set up the back story in 5 minutes, why couldn't they do that in this one). They set up the origin, they take more than 5 minutes, and they just chose to try a new story. This doesn't make it bad writing. The fact you prefer the old story to the new one, does not make it bad writing.
Splinter states he knew they would need to protect themselves, he found a book on ninjutsu, so he read the book and mastered it himself, then taught them. That's the reason he learned ninjutsu from a book laying in the sewer.
This is nowhere near as dumb as a normal rat, remember this is when he was just a rat, learned ninjitsu from his cage, by watching Hamato Yoshi. And I LOVE the 90's movie, and I can admit the new one is more believable. And it's not just oh look a ninjitsu book! There are hundreds of books laying around, when he comes across it.
I didn't like the whole "Foot clan, because they step over others" explanation either.
I did not like this either, but I also took it as, Splinter is just making assumptions, because Sacks kind of tells a different story to April. But, regardless, if you want to take it how it was given, it was a dumb reason for the name. This is not something I will condemn the movie over.
It felt like there was more to the Foot Clan from what Shredder said to Karai, but no time put towards developing that. Maybe left for later, or maybe more in this film left on the editing floor. No way of knowing.
To what I said above, I think Splinter was just making stuff up. The Foot had been around for years, he could have heard someone above ground say something like that and just repeated it. I mean nobody really knows a lot about the foot. I think he was just talking out of his ass. Again, I don't want to assume anything, but I felt like they were definitely setting things up for a sequel.
Actually their plan was as cliche as you can get for "Saturday cartoon villain." Most villains with plans like these are after A) money or B) power/world domination. Very few are just in it for chaos.
How often does a movie bring a completely original plot to take over the world? Come on, I hate when some people just decide well for THIS particular movie it's cheap, and lazy, and cliche. Also, world domination is chaos.

Speaking of Saturday morning villains, when Shredder said, "tonight I dine on turtle soup" I wanted to shake my fist in the air like the 87 Shredder would.
I so wanted to hear him yell "YOU BLASTED TURTLES!!"

You know I didn't even notice it I feel like that was the whole point to begin with lol

Now that we've all seen it. If we were to get a sequel, do you think they'd introduce Hamato Yoshi? Sure it could be Splinter somehow....(thinking along the lines of IDW), but what if Hamato Yoshi was still alive and kicking in Japan, leading a good version of the Foot Clan.

IDK that sound cool but i would love to see a movie IDW version with Splinter slowly remembering thing like picking the ninjutsu because we was drawn to it, or knowing that shredder was a Ninja Master so wanting to learn it to counter Shredder

My biggest gripe is the idea that a book has all the secrets to self-teaching mastery of ninjutsu in a short period of time with no teaching, no master, nothing. If they DID have the reincarnation angle and the book triggered it, I would be all over it as fitting together.
Agree to disagree that this makes more sense.

Eh, I'm not condemning the whole thing over that, just saying I didn't like it. But I felt they kind of borked the Foot entirely making them gun toting terrorists instead of a ninja clan.

Amazing Spider-Man had the exact same plot from the villain. Near identical. On the tower, spread the gas, change everyone. Only difference was no plan to make everyone better. A lot of people have given that film grief for the same reason.
It just seems weird for Shredder to me, but it does have that Saturday morning cartoon vibe, which was their admitted aim for the angle/vibe of this. At least Shredder wasn't whiny....I always hated that they made him a whiny lackey to Krang in the cartoon.

Well said.. and I completely agree. I think that the movie went by quick.. but I don't think it felt " empty" at all. And The turtles were spot on

Just got back from seeing it. I've been pretty neutral about this movie but still excited to see it.
The action scenes are excellent! The snow mountain scene is great. Also I enjoyed the martial arts. I was fine with the turtles new look. They sounded and acted just like the turtles we grew up with.
I wasn't super thrilled about the new origin and back story. However, I know that they were trying to go with a more "grounded in reality" and less complicated origin so I accept it. Definitely influenced by IDW more so than any other versions. It was a bummer to see the backstory once again told in a flashback. I would have liked to have seen it play out in real time.
Why was Splinter dressed Japanese before he found the ninja book? At first, I didn't like that Splinter taught himself ninjutsu from a book, but now that I think about it, it's not really much different from him teaching himself by mimicking Hamato Yoshi. He teaches himself either way.
Loved Shredder's voice. Hated the character. Don't get me wrong, when Shredder is in the armor he's awesome! However, Shredder unmasked is kind of lame. This is mostly because you don't really know anything about his character. He's just some Japanese guy who wants to destroy New York. Eric Sachs was a much more interesting character. I think it would have been better is he was Shredder.
The biggest problem with this movie is that it's rushed. None of the characters really get the attention they deserve. They are all just there. We learn nothing about Karai, Shredder, The Foot, etc. the movie gets really interesting when they start dipping into the backstory but it's never enough info.
That being said, I actually really enjoyed the film. I think it's the best film since the first! I would have just liked to see more.

The way this was told was from splinter's point of view, which he set up by saying he didn't remember anything from before the lab (possibly moving forward with a reincarnation story, or even a retelling of the learning ninjitsu from a rat cage) and he was going in and out and seemed to be missing big chunks of time during the lab sabotage by April's dad. Her putting them in the sewer wasn't "just because" she thought she was saving them.

Did you see the movie? He was only a ninja master when it came to kicking the turtles' asses. Shredder kicked the living crap out of him.

They are hardly masters at ninjitsu in this movie. They admit many times they're too young and not experienced enough. They end up using improvisation most of the time, which fits with their personality and the story that was given.
Amazing Spider-Man had the exact same plot from the villain. Near identical. On the tower, spread the gas, change everyone. Only difference was no plan to make everyone better. A lot of people have given that film grief for the same reason.
Ok, well in TASM he becomes a monster, and wants everyone to be monsters too. This is because of him using a serum before testing, he loses his mind.
Shredder and Sacks are clearly looking to take over the city and get rich. So other than using a spray to poison everyone, there are no similarities.
It just seems weird for Shredder to me, but it does have that Saturday morning cartoon vibe, which was their admitted aim for the angle/vibe of this. At least Shredder wasn't whiny....I always hated that they made him a whiny lackey to Krang in the cartoon.

I had the same thought, that I guess they aren't very good after all, which is expected, but also kind of a bummer to see all of them just get the shell kicked out of them. Really, they never even really win, they just don't lose. Especially sucks for Splinter to be such a push over against Shredder. He got some hits in, but overall....yeah, not the Splinter we've come to expect.

I....might be willing to say he even beat all of the turtles out for the best character in terms of performance. The actor definitely nailed it. I thought Mikey was hilarious, but Raph was the best, and as I've said before, he's my least favorite Turtle. I 100% agree with scaling him down. He kicked so much ass, he does not need all that armor.

This movie wasn't horrible, but it wasn't amazing either. The humor was great, I loved that they made all the turtles fun and funny and teenagery and not just Mikey. They kept to their personalities pretty well, even if they did majorly nerd out Donnie to the max.
The plot holes are horrid tho, and worst of all there are a lot of them. You can tell that the script has been re-written and I'm almost 90% sure that Oroku Saki was slapped in there due to the 'white shredder' back lash.
He still felt like a back seat bad guy. He barely got any history and his motives for 'the plan' they were working on for years seems...I don't know...not something Shredder would really care about. It was def. a Sacks/corporation plan more than a Shredder plan. Why was he even in NY? There is no Yoshi so it's a little off putting.
The mutagen was poorly explained as well.
My biggest issue was that they were determined to catch the turtles SPECIFICALLY to get the mutagen from their blood and didn't bother trying to get Splinter. He has mutagen in his blood too! And when Donnie says "get the mutagen back to Splinter, it will save him!" WHY? HE HAS MUTAGEN IN HIS BLOOD TOO! If it's a cure all...healing...agent then why does splinter need it? And seriously...Shredder had him in his hands, literally and thew him away when they were very specific about needing all the mutagen blood they could get.
Also for an inconspicuous plan, they had a really flashy execution. "Let me just secretly let out a virus on top of the building of the company who will have the cure." Like, why not do it somewhere else so there is no connections to Sachs..er Sacks. "And lets have Shredder in his EXTREMELY FLASHY AND NOTICEABLE ARMOR DO IT ON A ROOF WHERE ANY HELICOPTER OR SOMEONE ON ANOTHER ROOFTOP COULD SEE!"
I also hate that Vernon wasn't Vernon, he was like a knock off, watered down Casey Jones. Karai was totally a pointless character. Another thing that bothered me is if that armor was special because I don't believe he could be that strong alone. These are big, bullet proof, car crushing, truck throwing turtles and they barely phase him. I call BS if he's just a dude. It's like the hulk standing on a car and crushing it into the ground with his foot. That's what it was like when he bested Raph...doesn't seem possible without help. They never really explained what that armor does or how. I think Shredders AND the turtle's strength was inconsistent.
Megan was still terrible. April was written alright, but I felt they were trying to make her more important then she was. And did April's dad die in the fire or from being shot? If he was shot, how did Sacks not see April going back for the turtles? I'm still confused about that.
The action was pretty enjoyable though, I've gotta say I enjoyed watching Master Splinter do his thing. The CGI held up pretty well, the only parts that looked fake were the flashbacks...tho I enjoyed the flashbacks anyway.
THEY SHORTENED THE ELEVATOR SCENE AND THAT PISSED ME OFF! I loved that scene in the TV spots.
Loved the nods ("Tonight I dine on turtle soup." Yes. ) and I loved how Splintered tormented them for a confession in a hilarious way! Even if Splinter was ugly. (That Beard/stach flip though when he sees Shredder tho, lol! )
So, it's not bad, but not great. Just okay, which...considering the massive backlash and issues this film had in the beginning, is successful.

He saw/heard Sacks and Shredder planning 'the plan' and knew that Sacks followed Shredder (not sure how he knew their relationship so well though) And that was responsible for bad stuff? April's dad and freedom from April? He knew Shredder would use or hurt them and...vendetta?

I'd guess to lead to world domination at one point...ok not domination in traditional style, but financial domination. Start with N.Y and spread it, or use N.Y as an example so people/other countries will buy a vaccine from him to prevent the spread?
It's really stupid considering that he doesn't have much Mutagen and that he was GOING TO START THE PLAN BEFORE HE GOT ALL THE MUTAGEN FROM THE TURTLES! But, that's my guess.

I have no idea. You'd think after 15 years they would need to change or upgrade it but...it's like everything has been ready to do for 15 years...they even kept the maintenance up on all the devices. At that point it was probably to push the plot along.

It seems strange to me that they would spend all that exposition in the film to tie everyone's backstory into each other in one origin just to leave all those huge plot holes in the newly crafted origin. That seems a hell of a lot more complicated than the original Mirage origin that Liebesman thought was too complicated for the viewers, and the Mirage origin is pretty straightforward. The biggest suspension of disbelief in that origin is that a rat could mimic his master to learn ninjitsu.

You just answered my question. The plan was finished. Sacks had forgotten it, until he found them. After that, it was like they'd been working on it the whole time.
The scene in the trailer with the Guy taking the tarp off the ooze is Baxter Told people that ages ago Need more proof do we?
A trailer isn't a movie. There's no f*cking character in the film called Baxter Stockman. If they don;t say a character's name n the film, then by my calculations, that is an unnamed character.
Plus, I don't even know if that shot is in the finished film.

What I don't get is why would you need the mutagen from their blood when you had the mutagen before creating them in the first place?

It really is. A movie can't rely on an audience to just sort of assume something that is so specific. That stuff you Want to know is not needed it not Essential to the story they are trying to tell that's the point, why spend and extra 30-50 mins just explaining things?
Because that becomes incriminating really fast. The Dude trains at the Sahcs Estate, Like he literally lives in the same house, Chances are Shredder can handle going to the tower and checking on things. He is the man behind everything That what he does.
The one connection to IDW is the lab experiments on the turtles and Splinter. What are the vague plot points? The mutate Have Restorative properties, the lab Experiment Aprils Father, April being involved with the turtles
The release of a GIANT RED CLOUD right above Sacks' tower? I wonder what that would be. And what does the Shredder really control if New York becomes a quarantine zone? It's not like every person in the city is going to get that antidote.
Dude Your seriously Over thinking this Way to much, Red cloud Skills people People want to be safe they get Sachs to make them safe. Sachs makes them safe Gain Power. Shredder does not Want to control just NY he is a power hungry Warlord, He takes out NYC can Grasps Control over the whole eastern Shore for fear of another attack. It really not complicated.
A movie needs to be a stand alone story. Remember how the Avengers worked even if you hadn't seen any other Marvel films? A film should be able to tell a story in the film, not elsewhere. It has a Stand alone story, Which happens to leave plenty fro Expansion. in the sequels. They told the story they wanted just Fine. This wasn't a story about Yoshis' past and Shredder past they already pretty established people. If they want to delve into that they do have sequel to do that But its not "needed"

No Because the gas is a simple factor the Important part it the turtles Blood. They take the blood they create to sure they kill people the sell cure not that hard to understand Its not like they had to figure out anything it was just a missing piece to a puzzle You find the piece you finish it that's it not a but issue, Your acting like this is a total Huge Hole its not.

It was COMPLETELY bogged down with excess and unnecessary plot threads. For instance, they really did not need to explain that April fed them pizza. There doesn't need to be a reason for why they like pizza beyond the fact that it's effing delicious and they're in New York where it's easy to come by. And why did there need to be a deeper connection between them and April? It felt forced.

My point was that he had money at the start of the movie. He didn't need this ridiculous plan in order to get more. It would have been better if he was more desperate and down on his luck when we first meet him. The Foot clan and Sacks had nothing to prove. They were just going through the motions of the plot. Shredder's best scenes are when he's not in the suit. Once he puts the suit on he just turns into a glorified Megatron and you never see his face again. There isn't much back story to him either. He has scars but you don't find out why. 1990 Shredder was more badass even in all his purple flair.

There are plot holes for sure but it feels like an editing error. I feel like they cut the runtime to make it better for kids so I hope they release an extended version for older fans that would explain some of the holes in the story. But for me it was still a really fun movie. I didn't expect a masterpiece of storytelling just a fun popcorn flick and that's what it was. And mikey was great. It's good to see a movie where all the turtles get thier chance to shine instead of just Leo and raph.

Kudos to the effects team though. They did a phenomenal job. It's a shame it was wasted on such a crap movie. But I have to at least give them their due credit.
Which reminds me, after watching that ILM presentation and seeing that "emotional" scene with Raph, I can't believe it was played for a joke. I thought we were going to get a real dramatic moment for once. Not to mention there wasn't enough back story leading up to it.
Same with the Cowabunga line. They kinda just threw it in there at the end because they had to. It was never mentioned once before that.

Sam, I appreciate your enthusiasm for this movie and I also really enjoyed it. However, you can't deny that there are some major missing pieces in this movie. I understand the 2007 movie leaving the backstory to "fans' knowledge" because the movie played more like a sequel and didn't tie the origin into the plot. The new movie, however, completely changed the origin and had a plot that revolved around that origin. When you do that, you can't leave things up to "fans' knowledge" because the fans have no knowledge. We only have guesses. Who was Shredder? If he raised Sacks, why was he so irritated at him? Who is Karai? Where did the foot come from? What happened to the "create heroes" plot from the trailer? What happened to the "we were created as weapons" plot from the teaser? Where did Shredder's armor come from?
I liked the movie but it did leave me wanting more. I think it should have been a little longer to explain these things. I wish that Sacks had been the Shredder. We was a much more interesting character.

Bc the movie never had any time to breathe. We never got to just hang out with the turtles. Everything happened so quick, there was no time to care. We were never shown any moments of Raph being hard on the guys. Never shown any moments of the turtles bonding with April,(just because they were hers when she was a kid, doesn't mean you should automatically care) It's just assumed. Which is lazy. The moment at the end when Raph is apologizing to his brothers was almost laughable bc we didn't SEE any of it. Have an EMOTIONAL connection. No heart. Oh and Splinter was a dick.

The 1990 movie had the turtles facing Shredder, and failing to take him down. Then Splinter delivering the final blow. In this, it was a team effort. Mikey knocked a blade back to Shredder, Leo tagged him with his katana, and Raph and April knocked him loose. I don't recall Donnie delivering a blow in that moment, but it seems like such a deliberate effort to have everyone play a part, that I think I'm just forgetting it. Anyone remember?

Maybe it was just because I had seen too much ridiculousness up until that point so I wasn't willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I just hated how they kept shoehorning April in there, trying to give her more of a purpose this time. It felt so forced. She was literally linked to every single plot thread. And there was a lot of them.
The fall would have been a great emotional moment if they hadn't played it for laughs the whole time.

I enjoyed the movie. It had tons of plot holes and I know that's a big deal for most people. I'm fine with people that hated it because of it.
But I just have to rant a bit about how stupid it is that last week so many people were giving Guardians of the Galaxy a pass when that movie was just as stupid if not more.
Alright here goes....
- Star-Lord conveniently shows up at an unknown planet that houses a weapon of mass destruction that has nothing to prevent him from getting it.
- Ronan's goons conveniently show up right has Star-Lord gets his hands on it.
- Ronan's goons can't shoot (this goes on throughout).
- Ronan's goons make it back to Ronan in time to report about Star-Lord while Gamora makes it to Xandar from Ronan's lair and magically tracks Star-Lord down all in the time it takes Star-Lord to get to Xandar.
- Obviously staged fight scene occurs (seriously no one can fight in this movie except Gamora) and everyone gets arrested including Rocket and Groot.(Mercenary work is illegal?)
- Rocket conveniently knows exactly how to escape.
- Get this, by turning off gravity in every area of the prison BUT the tower they're in by hot-wiring something because comics.
- Without gravity no one can shoot their rockets at the Guardians.
- Plus tower can detach itself cause towers do that.
- Oh and he's able to use the drones to push the tower head where it needs to go by using a lever.
- Star-Lord suddenly knows exactly where to go to grab his walkmen.
- Followed by knowing exactly where to blow out the side of the prison to get to his ship.
- Back in Knowhere, a lawless criminal outskirt of the universe, a fight scene breaks out with Rocket and Drax that Star-Lord calms down by announcing to everyone billions of units (currency) are on the line. To which seedy criminals in the background don't give two ***** about.
- The infinity stone in and of itself.
- The slave girl blowing up the Collector's tower while no one, even the space dog, gets hurt for some reason.
- Yondu magically showing up with Ronan then going away for the entire fight scene.
- Ronan not killing Drax when he could've because the plot wouldn't let him.
- Groot nowhere to be found until fight was over.
- Gamora and Star-Lord exposing themselves entirely to empty space and not dying.
- Star-Lord somehow able to speak to Yondu to call for help.
- Yondu immediately there to save Gamora and Star-Lord.
- Yondu's band of mercenaries suddenly gaining heart and joining in on a suicidal plot. Including saving Xandarians from the dropping kamikaze Kree ships, but willing to kill them all in the end by selling the infinity stone.
- The entire we're all losers, go die for me friend motivational speech. More sudden heart changes because friends.Yay!
- Yondu's whistle powered arrow killing everyone one by one while no one shoots back.
- Ronan's ship suddenly going making it from Knowhere (on the edge of the universe) to Xandar at a break neck speed while moving at a snails pace to reach the surface of Xandar.
- Rocket using two giant paintballs to block the vision of Ronan's mothership so they could get underneath it.
- The Nova Corp blockade.
- No shooting hurts Ronan's ship unless it's from Rocket's ship.
- Ronan can somehow speak to all of the Xandarians through the hangar of his mothership.
- Hell everyone is able to speak to each other no matter what ship they're in.
- Moon killing weapon does nothing to Ronan, but what does take him down is Rocket's ship penetrating exactly in the right spot to not only immobilize Ronan but also take down his whole mothership.
- Groot's stupid ball was shattered, yet again no one else was hurt.
- Ronan suddenly appears by everyone else, along with a crowd of Xandarians who were miraculously not crushed by the mothership and are still hanging around.
- Ronan's hammer is shot by weapon appearing outta nowhere and this time the infinity stone breaks off of it.
- Merry band of guardians (some knocked out seconds before) band together to hold hands and say bitch.
- Destroys Ronan but no one else, while before it destroyed the Collector's entire tower.
- Infinite stone given back to Nova because clearly they can defend their home planet so well.

You're really reaching on some of those. You're essentially saying everything in the Guardians plot is ridiculous because you want to attack Guardians.
I haven't seen anyone say TMNT is ridiculous because a subway just happens to pass by the Foot hostage area at the right time or that it's dumb there's construction allowing them to get to the roof. That's the level of scrutiny you're taking this attack on Guardians, which isn't even how far people are scrutinizing TMNT.
And some of your attacks are logically established prior to the scenes you're calling out.
I'll agree with some of them. Particularly the people all being there when the ship's crashed just sort of out of nowhere. TMNT's equivalent amused me more as people just kept hanging around the bottom of the building with falling debris so they could keep narrowly jumping out of the way of it crushing cars around them. Guardians was like people just went "look, crashed ship....let's go gawk at it." Both are dumb, TMNT's is more amusing to the Guardians onlooker being more meh.

- Xandarians fix Star-Lords's ship although numerous homes were destroyed in war, and he only sent a dick message that barely did anything since it arrived moments before Ronan showed up.
Yeah I agree with that your saying here. While I did like the characters, everything else in the movie was TREMENDOUSLY flawed. I'm surprised no one could point them out as they were so prominent in the movie. It really kept me from enjoying it.

You can break down all of the unbelievable elements in Guardians because it's a fantasy sci-fi film. But at the end of the day, it's all about execution. That's what makes the difference between whether you're willing to suspend your disbelief or not. And the new turtles movie was executed poorly.

Another thing, it's never clearly shown what Donnie's staff is capable of until he flips a car with it saying, "I've always wanted to try this." It felt like there should have been some more foreshadowing leading up to that moment, but there wasn't any. Stuff just kinda happens.
Same with the Cowabunga line. They finally say it at the end of the movie when they are about to face Shredder. And it could have been a great moment if they had foreshadowed it earlier. Instead we get Raph saying to Mikey, "Remember that thing you used to say when we were kids?" But we hadn't heard any of them say it up until that point even though it showed them growing up. Instead we get a scene with them dancing to Gwen Stefani.
Their entire childhood was glossed over in one quick montage. In fact, just about every part of the story felt like cliff notes.

Now I know I'm really not going to like this movie.
I didn't love Guardians, but it was way more likable and charming compared to TMNT. I found Pratt borderline annoying. But he's nothing compared to Mikey. At least Pratt had SOME serious moments. It was like Mikey had no concept of danger. He kept ruining any tension the movie had with his constant one liners.
I'll give you an example. You've seen the trailer so you remember the part where Raphael gets thrown into the ceiling by Shredder? Mikey's response was, "That's harsh." Even though Raph is about to die.
Another example, Mikey thinks that Leo, April, and Vern all die falling off a cliff yet he makes a joke about it. Then for whatever reason Raph sleds by on his shell and says, "They're not dead numbnuts," even though I have no idea how Raph knew they weren't dead since nobody could have seen them hanging so far down the cliff in the spot they were in.
One more example. I saved the best for last. There's a scene where all of the turtles are about to fall to their death. This was finally a moment they could have played for emotional sincerity. What's Mikey's final confession? "I still don't understand the finale of Lost." It was like the whole time he could care less about what happens to him and his brothers. And besides that, all of his dialogue was about hitting on April. Donatello was pretty much the same way besides the hitting on April part.
Raph was the only one who took anything seriously so he ended up being my favorite.

I felt pretty good after that rant so I'm not going to say my more, but whether or not I was reaching on some, overall there were major plot holes and coincidences in both films. Anyone who says otherwise should embarrassed. With regard to execution, that's why I liked Tmnt more. It was so fast paced it never dwelt on the inconsistencies. GotG on the other hand had several drawn out slogs of ridiculousness so that you were forced to notice them and they could wink or joke afterwards to say, it's okay we meant for this to be cheesy.

But this one had a chance to go deeper into their origins and show the important parts, but it didn't. It was too rushed. We don't even see all of the turtles handed their weapons. Only Leo and then it cuts away.

Maybe. I've seen some Raph fans disappointed with him. He gets no growth or character arc either, really. Main thing he gets to himself is a beat down from Shredder.
As someone else mentioned, his big emotional moment didn't make any sense and had no connection since everything that's driving this emotional outburst was never shown in the film in any way, shape, or form, except for one aspect in a single comment.
A comment, I might add, that was taken from the Blue Door as an intended subplot, yet carried more weight in the Blue Door scene.

You know, with everything that was cut out of this movie from previews to other things that have been shown that didnt make it to the film, I feel like paramount stepped in and restricted the runtime for this film. I seriously think they originaly had a 2 hr runtime for this movie and because paramount wanted it to be aimed at kids they had cut out so much story that slowed the film down and it left us with a fast paced movie, which is ok seeing how I liked the film, however I seriously hope by som miracle when this movie comes to bluray we can get a directors cut, or unrated, or extended version the way it was meant to be seen.....

I'm sure most people are tired of me ranting, but there was so much wrong with this movie, lol.
Let me elaborate on Raph for a second.
He's supposed to be the one who takes joy in fighting, but you never once see that in the whole film. He's definitely not afraid to throw himself into battle but it's usually just out of anger or because he has to. You never see him enjoying it. You never feel his lust for blood. He's mostly just angry the whole time.
And his usual clashes with Leo are so brief and not expanded upon in any way that they feel inconsequential. Just the usual bickering of brothers. There's never a real dramatic moment between. You don't really feel Raph's jealousy for Leo or Raph being at odds with Leo as the chosen leader. None of it.
But they did make sure they had time for fart jokes. That's important.

So, once again... don't give Raphael bad-ass action scenes for him to shine, just give him a beat down and to get stepped on and that's it.
And ruin any good emotional moments for him because 'hey, why build-up it up? Let alone do a decent job with it?'
Because it's only for good flicks like the first movie.
And Mikey doesn't care when any of his bros gets hurt/injured? Yep that is some great 'family dynamics/brotherhood/love' there. You'd think maybe that'd be one of Mikey's points of character of 'worrying/sad/worried that a brother of his might be hurt/dead'...but, nah, that's no worries either.
But like you said, at least it has room for the 'harmless fart joke'. As well as the 'Mikey wants to Hump Megan Fox' which gets the Lol's for the Audience!
So, what's so great about this flick again?
And also, from what someone else said in this thread with I guess the cowabunga line?
"you remember that thing you said in when we were kids, Mikey?"
I guess it should have been...
"Uh, No Raph. What are you talking about?"
So, I don't understand. Why do people keep saying 'they really nailed the characters' when it all sounds the Exact Opposite? Mikey doesn't care if a brother gets hurt/is dead/could die, Raph isn't a Bad-ass, and seems like Leo & Donnie might as well have been the Invisible Men.

Star-lord is a bounty hunter he was hired for the job, his job would come with maps and information where to locate things...hence his red map laser thiny showing him where everything was
Rocket was Explained to have escaped from every kind of prison known ..thus being a master escpaer

While the connecting everything to April thing was a huge stretch I absolutely loved Splinter thanking her for giving them their freedom. I also loved the origin. The Look of Splinter and the turtles mutating and standing up reminded me a lot of the origin scene from the first film, with the added benefit of seeing the turtles as mutated babies (that got a collective "Awww!!!" from the theater). It was a very sweet scene. I also liked how Splinter described the turtles as being infatuated with the outside world as kids and that triggering him to think that he needed to teach them how to defend themselves.
The learning from a book thing was completely lame. However, the way Splinter described how he and the turtles took to it so naturally made me think that if they were going to go that route they should have had it so that the Mutagen weaponized their minds . Like it hardwired them to be able to learn how to fight almost naturally. Intelligent creatures with natural body armor designed to learn fighting styles quickly and efficiently. That could even explain Donatello's vast intelligence, maybe the Mutagen wasn't perfect and it effected him a bit differently, sending his mental capacity into overdrive. I would totally buy that the Foot would be trying to design weapons like that. As it stands the mutagen and why they were testing on a rat and 4 turtles of all things just doesn't make any sense to me.

Saw it last night, I loved it! I honestly would say it's my second favorite TMNT movie, with the original being the first for me. Exceeded my expectations.
I guess Shredder will be coming back in the sequel since he's shown to still be alive...AND he had some of the mutagen on the tip of his finger before he clenched his hand into a fist. Will he come back as a mutant?
One question I have...what happened to the Raph in disguise scene? It wasn't in the movie...the elevator dance sequence was also missing some of the parts we saw in trailers and whatnot.

There's a lot that seems left on the cutting room floor. I'm wondering if the reshoots really did result in altering scenes around and wouldn't work with the added reshoots.
If the disguise scene talked about Sacks as Shredder, then that wouldn't fit if Saki was added during reshoots (hypothetical example, not confirmed those were the reshoots).
And I agree he survived because of the mutagen on his finger....or his glove's finger since it wasn't his bare hand. I assume it doesn't mutate him, just gives him healing abilities, akin to the speculative "he can't be killed" from IDW.

Yea, I'm guessing the disguise scene was supposed to happen before Raph ends up in the Channel 6 van. They must've cut it for whatever reason. Maybe they felt it would slow down the movie too much.
I felt the elevator part being cut short was for the better since they were about to go battle Shredder and it kinda took away from the build up of that moment. I would've appreciated a more suspenseful scene with them bonding one last time and maybe show them being a little more afraid while in a cramped space. And then maybe have Mikey could cut the tension with his music.

I still think a plan to make an army of a super terrorist fooctlan with the mutagen would have made more sense.
With the lines like 'we were created as weapons' and 'we were trying to create heroes'. It would seem to make more sense for Sacks and Shredder to want to make these weapons for ''the greater good'' but ultimately use them on their own people to make the foot and themselves unstoppable.
ESPECIALLY after seeing what the mutagen DID to these test subjects.
The 'cure/vaccine-toxins' bit felt super random to me.

This is a personal thing, but I absolutely hate this current trend of having to make everybody involved in the plot of a movie previously connected somehow. It makes their whole world so small, closed-off and limited. There's no sense of exploration or potential - everything's predestined and nobody has any real agency.
If this thing gets a sequel, it'll probably be revealed that Casey Jones' father owned the pet store where the O'Neils got Splinter and the Turtles. And that Eric Sacks is his uncle.

One of the writers said their inspiration for TMNT was a buddy cop movie. I think they coulda learned a few things if they watched 21/22 jump street. It managed to be funny while exploring the characters and actually gave the characters development. Perhaps someone needs to tell Micheal Bay and Jonathan Liebesman that it is possible to have a well told comedy.

I liked that Splinter named the turtles in the original movie. It made it feel more personal. The whole Project Renaissance thing was terrible on every level.

It managed to be funny while exploring the characters and actually gave the characters development. Perhaps someone needs to tell Micheal Bay and Jonathan Liebesman that it is possible to have a well told comedy.
I wish the directors of 21 Jump Street would have handled the turtles movie.

I don't think this is what they were going for, but reading all this negative stuff - a lot of it coming from people who were really looking forward to this, by their earlier comments - actually has me more curious. I wanna go if it's still playing in September. It sounds... really bad. I'm getting that "car crash" vibe from it.

Yea, those are my thoughts exactly. Not only was it stupid but it didn't need to be in there. And I swear they explained it two or three times, which I get was probably for kids in the audience, but if you have to do that THEN WHY INCLUDE IT AT ALL? They had the perfect setup already.
I liked that Splinter named the turtles. It made it feel more personal. The whole Project Renaissance thing was terrible on every level.
The more I think about this movie the more it pisses me off. And where the hell was this "operatic" pizza scene Liebesman was talking about? If you're going to go on record and say that then you better have something damn good beyond just blatant product placement.Funny enough a 'lets make a ourselves an army of super strong bad guys' would have been MUCH easier for kids to understand. Their plan was probably too complex for the age range they were aiming for. No kid is going to fully grasp toxins/cures/money gain/world issues. (Not to it's full extent)
Also, there is so many possibilities of new mutant baddies in a sequel if they wanted the mutagen for building an army.

Yeah it was during that Sacks/Vernon/April ''showdown'' for lack of a better word, and Sacks is like: *Shoots the gun randomly at nothing hoping to hit something I guess* "IT TOOK LESS BULLETS TO KILL YOUR FATHER!111"
Then April is like "You killed my father?!?!?!!?11/11"

And it would have been smarter. If you're the only guy who is suddenly offering a cure to a freshly released toxin nobody has ever seen before, doesn't that look a little suspicious? It'd be better if he was doing it to hold the cure for ransom or as blackmail, but no, on top of everything else, he wanted to still be seen as the good guy.
I just don't see what his end game was here. Eventually, if you want to take over a city, you're going to be looked at as the bad guy. And I didn't believe he needed to do this for wealth because he looked plenty rich and successful to me.
All of this stuff just took away from time they could have spent getting to know the turtles and their relationships. I mean, we spend what? Five minutes in the lair before it is destroyed? We don't even get to see what one normal day in their life is like.

Well, the TMNT plot structure was very similar to ASM2. It suffers from the same problem as most reboots these days. They try so hard to add more elements to the story (like the mystery behind Parker's parents) but end up complicating things and rushing the plot along. Too much of what should be an important focus ends up only being implied. Just about everything in TMNT 2014 was implied. There was no time to feel anything for what was happening. You were just supposed to assume everything by all the little bits of information they gave you.
They made a movie that tried to please everyone but ended up feeling like it pleased no one.

I had such high hopes for this. It was weak. Shredder had so many opportunities to slice flesh but didn't. Like he would be trying so hard to cut them all up but his blades were always getting blocked. THEN he would get his window and just punch them. (Splinter/Leo) He could have cut Leonardo in half while he was holding up that tower but just punched him in the ribs.. :ohwell:

It would have made the destruction of the lair much more poignant. Not to mention if they showed their daily livses and more of Splinter's soft and loving side (not just from flashback),instead of his disciplinary side (which I personally found amusing as hell), it would have helped us feel more for Splinter when he was hurt.
Granted they did a good job showing that he was really protective and fought for his sons to escape, but it was so fast and in the middle of ass kicking it didn't really give me a chance to know or bond with him.
I felt sad he was hurt for the fact that he was hurt in general, not on a personal/bonded level.

I have to say I enjoyed the movie it has amazing fight scenes, and the turtles personalities were great. Mikey and Raph were my favorite in this movie.
Splinter has an awesome fight scene.
but time to vent.
The story was completely lacking= very generic, honestly Sony could sue Platinum Dunes.
The Dialogue was terrible
I hate the size of the turtles, they make the foot completely irrelevant as well as Karia.
The turtles are bullet proof????
Vernon was hit and miss with me in this movie
The pace of the movie was to fast and did not explain certain aspects very well and made the casuals movie goer feel lost.

So true. A good example for that would be in the 1990 movie when Splinter has a one and one with Raph. It wasn't even a very long scene, but you still get to know both of the characters, their dynamic, and it has some emotional depth.

Now preferably I would have rather had Oroku Saki but if they were going to go with Eric Sacks, I wish they had just gone all the way with it instead of wimping out and shoehorning an Asian Shredder in there. Eric Sacks was a way better character and I feel that some of his best stuff probably ended up on the cutting room floor.
Splinter teaching himself ninjutsu from a book? Well is it really that much more ridiculous than a rat watching his master and imitating his moves? When had a rat done anything like that? I did like when Splinter said "I remember nothing before the laboratory." I think they should have just gone all the way with the IDW storyline and had Splinter find out he was reincarnated.
What was the point of Johnny Knoxville? I'm starting to think that maybe he just had some sort of contract obligation with Paramount so they decided to just put him in this. I don't think he really brought anything that Ploznek couldn't bring.

I think the problem was that the budget was so big that the studio got nervous and forced changes. I would have rather had the version that the filmmakers originally wanted to make (good or bad). Instead it felt to me that we got a compromised version that, through too many cuts and reshoots, tried to hard to please everyone. True, nobody wanted a white Shredder but if it worked, it worked. Instead we got an Asian actor shoehorned in. I also think they tried to change their original origin to better please the fans but they had already shot the stuff so we got a dumbed down version of IDW instead of the whole "created as weapons", "create heroes" version that they originally wanted to go with.

That was one of the parts I kind of liked, but sometimes it was a little creepy like a snake or something. I could have done without it, but it was put to pretty good use during Splinter's fight scene.
Was anyone else thrown off by the turtles calling Splinter "Dad"? Seemed kind if weird to me.
Yea, it was a little weird. I think if we had gotten to know them better maybe it wouldn't have felt so weird. Like you could have had them call Splinter dad from the start, but then he corrects them to call him Sensei while training them (kinda to show he means business). Then it would have more emotional punch when Leo calls him dad during the raid.
I know I'm gonna get grief for this but I think Eric Sacks should have been the Shredder in this. Now preferably I would have rather had Oroku Saki but if they were going to go with Eric Sacks, I wish they had just gone all the way with it instead of wimping out and shoehorning an Asian Shredder in there. I agree. They should have cut Saki out completely because they didn't utilize his back story or do much with his character so having him in there in the capacity he was did nothing for the movie or the fans. Either that or cut Sacks and spend more time on Shredder's story.
There's more charm in Splinter simply mimicking his masters movements (provided you can suspend you disbelief since it's pre-ooze which always bothered me, too) compard to him just simply finding a book randomly and becoming a Sensei all of a sudden. I guess it's not really a question of which is more believable, but one of them is a little more contrived. Splinter learning from Yoshi feels like a more natural story progression.
What was the point of Johnny Knoxville? I'm starting to think that maybe he just had some sort of contract obligation with Paramount so they decided to just put him in this. I don't think he really brought anything that Ploznek couldn't bring.
Knoxville probably was brought in for his name. But I actually didn't find him to be as terrible as I thought he was going to be. He was the least of the movie's problems.

In my opinion the worst part was shredder in his armor. I thought the actor they got to play him was great, even his voice, but all that armor just took so much away from him. I think it could have been a lot more simple and less like a transformer. Anyone else agree?

What did you guys think of Splinter using his tail so much to fight/ do things? I thought it was weird at first but accepted it?
I thought it was awesome. I mean, in the 2012 cartoon he utilizes his tail a lot, but never to that extent. I think it brings a lot more badassary to him. And why not? I mean, it's not THAT strange considering all the weird things the turtles can do that normal turtles can't.
Was anyone else thrown off by the turtles calling Splinter "Dad"? Seemed kind if weird to me.
No...and yes. It's no different than him calling them is sons. I think it was more off putting because they never really showed or built a solid relationship with them on screen. The most we got was a fast flashback. We really only saw Splinter disciplining them. Also, we usually hear 'Father' if they call him anything other than sensei, which is more respectful than 'dad', which again is off putting due to the lack of shown relationship. However, given that we know they are a tight knit family and they have a love for each other, I don't find it all that weird.
I agree. I don't think he should have been THE shredder, but A shredder. A mock up/knock off/wannabe who was maybe inspired by Saki or something. Or perhaps Sachs is the Shredder for the west while Saki is in the East and it could all lead up to Saki actually coming over to take Sachs place.
With the plot and 'the plan' I don't even see a need for Shredder in this film. Especially with no Yoshi. I think the movie could have built up to him being in a sequel. It leaves much to be desired instead of a super Shredder.
Splinter teaching himself ninjutsu from a book? Well is it really that much more ridiculous than a rat watching his master and imitating his moves? When had a rat done anything like that? They probably will if a sequel arises since IDW is their main inspiration. But, at this point it would have been too much unfinished plot on top of a rushed plot already in the works.
What was the point of Johnny Knoxville? I'm starting to think that maybe he just had some sort of contract obligation with Paramount so they decided to just put him in this. I don't think he really brought anything that Ploznek couldn't bring.
I didn't think he did too bad. There were some parts he sounded genuinely like Leo and I could hear Leo and other times I heard Knoxville. Like their strength, some of the voices were a little inconsistent.
Anyway, I enjoyed it a lot but I do wish they had taken more time with the plot and story. Once the action starts, it doesn't stop.
Time was a huge issue I agree, but you can tell this script has been re-rewritten and you can tell most of it was last minute. It shows in a bad way. I'm glad they took out the alien aspect of it, and I'm glad they toned down the lips and noses due to the backlash, but they should have risked the original plot idea with Sachs and hero making and weapons and such. It made the film too inconsistent with it's self and sort of doomed it.
Not to say I hated it, I just didn't love it. I liked it more than I thought I would, but still felt that grave disappointment I expected.

I bet he was just a random New Yorker who walks by and says something like, "Was that a teenaged mutant ninja turtle in that trench coat? ...Nah, that'd be RIDICULOUS!" ha... ha... ha.

Knoxville probably was brought in for his name. But I actually didn't find him to be as terrible as I thought he was going to be. He was the least of the movie's problems.
I actually loved Knoxville as Leo. He did a great job.
I loved the bit where Raph says "Who put you in charge?" "You know who did."

I feel like if Laird had been involved this might have turned out better. He seemed indifferent about it from the first trailer.
Honestly, I think it may be that the best product would result from a strongly talented team working on it with Eastman and Laird both being creative consultants.
Similar to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko or his other collaborators, I think Eastman and Laird put their best work out as a duo. They provided counter-balance to one another's strengths and weaknesses.
What did you guys think of Splinter using his tail so much to fight/ do things? I thought it was weird at first but accepted it?
I thought it worked pretty well myself.
Was anyone else thrown off by the turtles calling Splinter "Dad"? Seemed kind if weird to me.
It was a little weird to me just because I'm used to hearing them use his name, sensei or "father" at most familiar.
Eric Sacks was a way better character and I feel that some of his best stuff probably ended up on the cutting room floor.
I actually agree if they had to cut a lot of crucial Sacks-Shredder plot due to pushing in Saki, they made a mistake suddenly trying to alter it. If they felt the backlash was enough, I would have done a reshoot to include in post-credits of Saki confronting Sacks with something to the effect of "You have dishonored the Foot Clan" and leave it at that. I don't like Sacks replacing Saki as Shredder, not at all, but I think they could have led to having done something with the real Shredder arriving due to Sacks' failure. No way to really know how much it would have impacting the original plot. The main thing that jumps out at me, as someone else pointed out, is all of Saki's scenes were filmed in a single room, further suggesting Sacks was indeed meant to be the man in the armor. I approve of working Saki in (he never should have been a question), but the way they did it adds to the haphazard feel.
I feel like the rat watching a ninja master at least includes the full motions, the full observation of a ninja master through all of the training. Just reading a book isn't going to teach anyone to be a true martial artist.
What was the point of Johnny Knoxville? I'm starting to think that maybe he just had some sort of contract obligation with Paramount so they decided to just put him in this. I don't think he really brought anything that Ploznek couldn't bring.
I'm confused by that as well. They sure didn't use his name for star power or for promotional use.

So true. A good example for that would be in the 1990 movie when Splinter has a one and one with Raph. It wasn't even a very long scene, but you still get to know both of the characters, their dynamic, and it has some emotional depth.
If I had to say one positive, Splinter's tail was my favorite weapon in this new movie. That scene was so powerful it didn't need to be long, which is exactly the kind of scene this movie needed. A long with the fire scene. Short, but powerful enough to show that bond.
Yes. The tail was awesome! Made him kind of unique and badass!

Does anybody else no longer trust Kevin Eastman? I just feel like he doesn't have a good eye for quality anymore and is in this for the money more than anything. I realize he's not totally to blame, but he did talk the movie up a lot. I mean, wasn't he the one who wanted to name Shredder, The Grader? I feel like Laird was probably the real brains behind everything if I might be so bold to say. I think Laird has higher expectations much like the fans and Eastman kind of doesn't have any. It's like he's just happy and overly hyped when anything turtles happen. Eastman is less serious about it for sure.
Maybe he saw the plot or movie before all the last min filming and changes and it actually WAS good. Who knows? I wonder if his opinion changed after the movie changed or if he's sticking by his guns?
I think they balance each other out tho, Laird seems to damn anything that isn't his comics or the 2003 cartoon and Eastman seems to be open and accepting to way too much.
I think this franchise would have flopped if either of them had done it solo.

Sounds like Michael Bay.
Why did they need a better connection? Was their connection in all previous media where they meet for the first time ever not good?
Its not that their previous connection wasn't good, I feel it makes their bond stronger. In the original movie, April is saved my Raph, gets brought down to the lair and just starts hanging with them. No she is actually tied to their origin.

SMH @ people acting like Splinter teaching himself ninjitsu post mutation (enhanced abilities / intelligence) is less plausible than a pre-mutated normal rat mimicking a ninja master's moves from a cage.
The movie had flaws. Sevaral in fact. As an adult movie fan, it isn't very good. As a nostalgic turtle fan, it's not that bad, actually pretty good at times. Definitely better than everything else in the series apart from the 1990 original.
For people saying the turtles personalities were one dimensional? We see dimension to them we didn't even in other films. Leo is a leader, who almost feels guilty he's been given the reigns by Splinter. Not a soft leader like the '90 film, and not a total douche like the 2007 animated movie. He's stoic, but he also acts like one of the guys from time to time showing personality. Like when he's dancing.
Raph is the rebel, rude, quick to anger one. Not so much the eager fighter he was in 1990, but he has a soft side underneath his bad ass exterior with his monologue towards the end. That doesn't make him a "softie" that makes him gasp, dimensional. Which the character very much is in the best iterations of the story.
Don is the prototypical dork, but he's able to be comedic as with the pop tarts line on their potential fall to their death. He serves his purpose as the brains in this one better than he did in the Barron film.
The problems I had?
- The edited to death script. One second they call the ooze of alien origin, next it was made for finding cures to illnesses. No longer were they intentionally trying to create super warrior soldiers in the guise of Kappa, which the scroll on Sack's wall originally implied but instead just test subjects? April's dad burned the lab but was also shot to death? What? There was more instances of this through out the movie.
- The over focus on April or humans to start the film. Took too long to see the title characters.
- Didn't mind the militia / terrorist Foot Soldiers. But they were useless in the movie. Karai too.
- It was a quiet movie, with a totally forgettable score. Where was the Skrillex dub step "Reptile" song from the trailers to enhance actions cenes?
- Not enough martial arts scenes for the turtles. They looked cool when we did see them doing it though.
- Shamless plugs for products: Pizza Hut, Crush, etc.
- HATED the turtle van. Reeked of toy selling. And for a movie where they pretty much set these guys in reality. Why would they need it? They're 6'5 with super strength jumping from roof top to roof top. And where would they drive it to and from? How did they get it? Why paint it bright green / yellow with turtle patterns? Plus that big ass missle? IDK ... just couldn't suspend my disbelief.
- NEEDED more time with the turtles themselves. Probably too expensive, but that's why practical suits and dark lighting allowed for more of that in the original. When it's just them on screen they are fantastic.
- Some of the physics in that avalanche scene is ridiculous, even given the nature of the matieral.
Things I liked?
- Love that they were shadowy vigilantes doing good before being discovered.
- References to the 1990 film. Pizza on Splinter, Raph getting ass kicked.
- Japanese Shredder. Who was tall, and even in an over the top modernized Samurai transformer suit was shown to be a really skilled fighter. The scene he's introduced was cool.
- I liked April's connection to the turtles being her former pets, even if contrived.
- The turtles personalities are more individualized than the 1990 film. Particularly Donatello.
- Knockville was surprisingly decent as Leo. I heard Leo, not the guy from Jackass. As did my g/f. Midway through the movie she asked me which one was him.
- Megan Fox was servicable as April. Arnette was actually not as funny as I hoped.
- The humor. Mikey was stand out. I liked his horny teenager shtick in this version. Never understood why the turtles have never been sexual as teenagers in other incarnations.
- The ninja action we did get to see was cool. Splinter was shockingly bad ass. Like Yoda.
- The use of their weapons.
- Turtles themselves looked great. Don't get the CGI complaints.
- Loved the referencing to Batman, Superman, X-Men, just as the original concept of TMNT was intending to mock.
- The climax of the turtles, and April coming together to defeat the Shredder while not being bailed out by Master Splinter was 10x better than the climax of the original.
- Raph's speech was heart warming, and well delivered. Even if the things he said weren't really shown in the movie or earned.
- Turtle kids were cute.
- "MC Mikey ..." hopefully on the Blu Ray we get the extended even goofier dancing.
This film is getting unnecessary piling on from haters. No it isn't TDK trilogy, or Iron Man, or Superman, Avengers or Captain America WS. But it's a pretty entertaining late summer blockbuster. It definitely could've been better, or gone full bore with more intelligent or interesting aspects to the mythos they were portraying. Hell they could've indulged more on the ninja action.
It's a kid film. Not a great one, but a good one. The audience I was with seemed to enjoy themselves both times.
Let me put it this way. TMNT 2014 isn't 20% rotten bad, and Guardians isn't even close to 92% fresh. Both films had charming characters, a true sense of brotherhood. Both suffer from an over the top, corny, cliched, nonsensical down right stupid plot at times. Yet, in this case Marvel Studios can do no wrong.
I've seen it twice now, here's how I'd rank:
1990: 9/10
2014: 8/10
SOTO: 6/10
2007: 5/10
III: 5/10
What they do well, is great. What they do bad, is putrid. BTW, hello. New to the boards. Hope everyone enjoys seeing this in theaters this weekend. Love reading everyone's thoughts.
Love your thoughts. Totally agree. My biggest complaint is that the initial encounter with April was a bit rapey. She was clearly freaked out, then hulking monster guys are surrounding her and Mikey says that gross line.
The movie was surprisingly violent. The Turtles and Splinter really got pummeled.

It is to me. At least with the rat in cage, he's learning from a ninja master. Not just reading a book and "I know kung fu" just like that. Plus I still find it ridiculous that the ancient art of ninjutsu is all neatly compiled into a single book.

One reason is likely because they're not human teenagers? I still point back to the Mirage comic and even cartoon where they've made comments about humans being unattractive.

If you say so. I felt it earned the poor rating. I was quite disappointed with it, particularly after I was really digging the vibe with the final month of trailers.

it was a full house, and many more people waiting outside for the next showing. i dont see why it wont make it to number one this weekend. i also loved the whole 'dine on turtle soup' line. this movie is a hell of alot better than TMNT3.

Splinter was just a regular rat, doing Ninjutsu in a cage...this Splinter is a mutated rat who obviously has superior intelligence. Learning from a book after being enhanced vs learning *and doing* from watching while having no enhancements at all....hmmm ok. Maybe if I become a Ninja master, my dog will start being able to do it too?

Yeah, because after the 80s explosion of ninja movies, it became a cash cow to make money offering the "secrets" in those books. A good portion of them are just made up nonsense. Even then, I'd love to see someone read a bunch of books and then take on someone actually trained in martial arts. Then again, I guess that's why Splinter and the turtles just get the hell beat out of them by Shredder.

Mikey is a creepy perv in this? Wow...The only line that is even close to being "pervy" is the shell tightening line. Also, he is constantly put in check by the other turtles after his comments. I thought it was pretty obvious from their dialogue they don't know how to interact with people. They kept bringing up tv or movie things as if they were real things. Saw it this afternoon, and loved it. It was light on plot, but really felt like it hit all the right notes for me, especially with character development and I actually liked the origin. I liked April's connection to them (a la IDW) and Splinter's chat with her felt really sweet. Shredder was bad-a$$, and the turtles were all spot-on. Didn't mind their size as much as I thought I would.
A few things I DID have a gripe about-
1: Sacks calling them box turtles when the animals in the lab were CLEARLY red-ears. You'd think that a guy working in a LAB with these animals would know the difference. April did, and she was just a kid at the time. So- she's smarter than Sacks??!!
2: Why did the turtles let April KEEP her phone even after Donnie wiped it? Didn't they think she'd take another picture?! That was dumb of them.
3: They CUT the elevator scene short. DARN IT!!!! Should have kept the whole thing- it lost some of the fun of the full-length version.
4: Why DID Shredder not take Splinter, too? If they needed the mutagen in their blood, why not get his, too? Weird.
5: Weak Foot/ not enough Karai. Self-explanatory.
Some high points:
1: The snow chase scene. Pure awesomeness! Bent some laws of physics, but honestly, I expected it, and I didn't mind at all. It was just so cool-looking, and it was so fast-paced I was on the edge of my seat with excitement.
2: Splinter's discipline and his tail-fighting. I LOVED how he used that tail to fight, and how stern and harsh he was disciplining the boys! That was a side we rarely see of him, and I liked it.
3: Mikey's "crush"!!! Okay, it was corny, and over-the-top, but he played it to the hilt, and I loved that. He felt like the typical "horny teen" boy, and I think that works for him.
4: The fight scenes. I don't know what all the complaints are about, because I saw plenty of martial arts action. Splinter's fight, the lair attack in general, and especially the final battle with Shredder- all amazingly well-done.
5: Buck-buck. Okay, this one is weird, but the LAST time I heard anyone mention this game was Bill Cosby in one of his old comedy sketches. Buck-buck!! I kept thinking I'd heard of it before, but it didn't hit me WHERE until AFTER I left the theater- and then I LOLed!! What a shout-out to the 80's....
6: Speaking of shout-outs- the scene with the pizza on Splinter's head. Straight out of the 1990 movie. Loved that. And Sacks saying they were going to use rabbits. Usagi, maybe?

Negatives:
Plot points to move the movie along like the shells being bullet proof and the adrenaline button are not necessary.
Not effective use of secondary characters. Karai had such potential in this direction especially with Eric Sachs being raised by Shredder. There could have been use of the step-sibling angle and perhaps shown sympathy from Karai and Eric berating her for it. Also, the eternally underrated Abby Elliott got three scenes? Irma needed more screen time and should have had a reaction seeing the turtles or played off April more.
As expected I just don't see the appeal of Megan Fox and would rather have another actress in the lead. Too much screen-time as well but was expected.
The turtle van was only seen at the end. If production went to the trouble of fixing it up it should have gotten more usage.
The Foot found the lair too easily and Raphael just left Splinter there? Little choice or not it did not seem right.
It did not really explain why the mutagen was created or was it always supposed to be an antidote that accidently mutated experiments? That was not really made clear.
Positives:
Good dialogue and a plausible plot. Both go a long way into making it better than the caution that plagued production.
While Raphael got the usual most screen time all the turtles got their personality down and portrayed well.
The origin works for me even with Hamato Yoshi completely absent.
Oh,Nice choreography with the use of the motion capture snow scene and fight scene.
A few references to the first film was a nice touch.
While I wanted the secondary characters time spread out a lot more its nice to see Vernon dusted off and made use of. Nice elevator scene beats out the nicely done Spider-Man 2 one.
Nice shout-out to Usagi and 2003 Raphael's hatred of "Cowabunga"
Overall 88. Falls inbetween the solid first two and so-so third and fourth film. Hope for more and non-turtle characters get more usage.

I just need someone to clearly explain the plot to me. I saw it and I still don't know what the hell I saw? Sachs wanted to get New Yorkers sick and then sell them a cure to heal them which is basically mutagen? And what was The Shredder getting out of this? Like was Shredder just a henchman to Sachs? He seemed to be doing a lot of leg work for Sachs but did they explain why or what Shredders motivation was? I mean they were going to heal everyone anyway in the end so what was the evil diabolical twist or end game? Just moohlah?

He seemed to be doing a lot of leg work for Sachs but did they explain why or what Shredders motivation was? I mean they were going to heal everyone anyway in the end so what was the evil diabolical twist or end game? Just moohlah?
The idea was somehow poisoning everyone in New York, then offering the cure would somehow grant Shredder power and Eric Sacks would get the money and be rich.
Though judging by the castle-like mansion in the mountains and his multi-branch company with the huge tower in New York City, you'd think he's already rich.
Sacks was the henchman to Shredder. Sacks wanted money, Shredder wanted power....somehow. I'm thoroughly convinced they stuck Saki in just to have him to placate the uproar over white washing Shredder. It was meant to be Sacks as Shredder only and they haphazardly stuffed him in due to backlash.
My favorite spoiler is that people are actually spelling Sacks correctly.
That threw me since I saw Sachs in all the information prior to release, but yeah, in the film it's clearly Sacks.

We can still have adult conversations
Umm, how is this line creepy or pervy? I think you misunderstood the word "adult." He was just joking that while they're young, they can still have grown up conversations, not talk about skinimax.

Seriously, all Mikey did was hit on April. That was his character. And it wasn't subtle or in a goofball way. What was up with him saying, "Guys, she's hot and passed out. Gotta do our civic duty..."

I haven't seen the movie yet, but judging by that line, he probably meant they needed to revive her by giving her mouth to mouth. Either way, Mikey's crush on April gives me the creeps with how it's presented. Looks like my bad vibe feeling has come true as it usually does. Always go with your intuition, and my intuition is telling me this movie is crap, and it's been confirmed. I'll see it once and then never see it again.

Either way it was creepy because you're never quite sure how far he's going to take it.

Yeah, and the shell tightening line made me cringe when I saw it in the previews. Ugh.

Agree that splinters voice was terrible. Fox did surprise me as well.
I wasn't bothered by michelangelos hitting on April. If anything, they never really interacted with people so that validates his inappropriateness.

You're right...Being a Michael Bay movie and all, I was always fearful Mikey was going to rape April...
This is the most ridiculous thing I think I've read people complain about. It was an innocent silly thing his character was doing. It's no different from Donnie plotting ways to isolate himself with April in the cartoon. Or Mikey constantly calling her a babe and kissing her on the tv in the 1990 movie. You want to talk about creepy, in the original cartoon they beg splinter to let them basically keep her hostage in the sewer.

That was creepy too. But yea, surrounding her threateningly and then Mikey saying "my shell is tightening" was rapey.

None of that was as creepy as he acted in this movie. And the main difference is that was all he did. Every line he said was about hitting on April. His character was given no depth beyond "I want to **** April and make sure everyone knows it." Maybe it'd be different if Megan acted bashful or flirty with him but there was none of that. She even looked uncomfortable with it sometimes. I never felt her connection with the turtles.

How on earth is a boner = rapey? Some people need to stop losing their heads all over the floor, hypening something so trivial.
He's awkward since he has no contacts with humans, and he means no harm.
That's all just fine imo.

Um, people who just met me and are surrounding me with weapons and then announcing they have a boner are creepy. Guess you're not a woman.

To be honest, I have a feeling there were scenes where April does get flirty with them, especially Mikey and Raph (remember the photoshots where she is hugging onto Raph and holding his arm/hand very close to her) but those scenes were indeed cut. Didn't Megan fox in an interview say that there was a subtle romance going on between April and one of the characters? And I highly doubt she referenced Vern.

In that interview, she was referencing Mikey... I think she thought that it would be more clear in the movie that she liked him back a bit.

The plot has been ripped from other movies/stories from the past. It's nothing new. Villains being the ones to create the destruction and then disguise themselves as the savior by creating a tactical plan or antivirus to lift them up in a God status amongst the people is nothing new in the movies/stories/comics. It's a plot I could buy in this movie, it was just executed poorly.
Ironman's Stark Industries double dealings with weapons was one.
Batman Begins with Scarecrow and the chemical being released is another.
KickAss did this with Red Mist, pretending to be a hero while really trying to capture Kick Ass and Big Daddy.
Angels and Demons, McGregor's character created the threat in disguise and then thwarted it to try and make himself a martyr to the people.

Do you think Kevin Eastman really thinks the movie is still awesome after they cut out his cameo?

We can only judge what was in the movie.

The nods to the original film were a great touch.
1) Leonardo cutting the pizza and a slice landing on Splinter's head.
2) The Shredder roof-top fight with Donnie and Leo lasting the longest one on one with Shredder.

Which is interesting because, On the Nick series, April is a Kunoichi to the Turtles and Splinter, Or at least hes trying to Train her to become a kunoichi, Kind of like how Karai is.

I am not a woman, but they offset Mikey's come on's by all of his brothers constantly telling him to shut up, and stop it. They do not let him get away with it. Mikey is confused, his first reaction to April is "should we kill her?" And why is nobody complaining about Vern constantly hitting on her? It's a movie, I think Hollywood learned from Burton's Planet of the Apes, nobody wants to see a humanoid animal kiss a human. It's safe to say April won't be hooking up with Mikey.
