The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot finally came out of its shell on Thursday, scoring $4.6 million in evening showings in 2,651 theaters.
Paramount estimates that the film, which was directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, will make somewhere in the mid-to-high $40 million in its opening weekend. The film, listed at a budget of $125 million, is rumored to have cost closer to $150 million.

Comparatively, Captain America: The Winter Soldier made $10.2m on its Thursday preview opening, X-Men: Days of Future Past made $8.1m, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made $8.7m, Transformers: Age of Extinction made $8.75m, and Guardians of the Galaxy made $11.2m.
Also, Guardians still beat TMNT yesterday, taking in $7.6m for its second Thursday (http://www.deadline.com/2014/08/box-office-preview-audiences-expected-to-shell-it-out-for-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-will-guardians-hold-fast-at-no-1/).

I guess to be more accurate with the numbers we should wait till tomorrow to see exactly what the movie brings in for a Thursday night. Also I feel like some people here want to see this movie bomb and favor a Marvel property.

We've been through this before, but... some of us just want the better movie to be more successful. Besides, we can be TMNT fans and Marvel fans.

That's even higher than $4.2 million that Maleficent made back in May. Though that movie had an overwhelmingly female crowd. This film is on track for a $45 million to $50 million opening.

Certainly not. It has so far grossed $727 million worldwide, including $235 million from North America, against a budget of $180 million.

Important thing to consider from the Deadline comment section:
When the media reports this weekend’s box office numbers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will include Thursday night receipts. Guardians of the Galaxy box office grosses for Thursday won’t be counted in this weekend’s numbers. It will be a close battle between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy under the traditional reporting of weekend grosses for a new movie and a movie in its second weekend of release.
So keep in mind that when the final weekend numbers are in, that the extra $4.6m for TMNT's Thursday night "count" toward that total and GotG's Thursday numbers don't. Weird how they do that.

I hope this movie does well. If it does do well am seeing it doing so slowly. How much do you guys think this movie needs to make in order for the film makers to be happy with it? I would love to see it reach $800 Million+ at the end of its run like Transformers 1
I heard that a movie needs to make double its budget to break even, do you guys think this is actually true? Ninja Turtles would have to make $250 Million to break even if this rule is true.

Ya The double or nothing rule does apply, but you also have to take the marketing into the figures as well. So the budget was around 125, and usually it is around 50 to 60 more for marketing. So I would say close to 300 to break even. I am predicting around 450 to 550 at the end of it all. The overseas market will help the film.

Rule of thumb is 2.5x the production budget. I've seen a couple reports over the past few days from the trades saying that TMNT's production budget was closer to $150 million and not the reported $125 million.

So how do movies make any money? DVD/Blu-Ray, VOD sales times how many times they intend to sell this movie over time??
If this rule is true, how can people get excited for how well a movie is doing at the Box Office? Take AVATAR for example everyone was going on and on about how the movie made 2 Billion+ at the Box Office. No one really knows how much it cost to make the movie, all they were saying is that it was the most expensive movie to make at the time. For all we know the profit could have been low for that movie.

In that same article, Deadline is reporting Guardians took 7.6 million on Thursday night against TMNT's 4.6 million. It's set records from it's night of release through every night since.
It's really going to be determined by word of mouth, I think.

Moviegoers have been racing to Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” propelling the wisecracking terrapins to an opening weekend as high as $60 million at the U.S. box office.
Friday afternoon forecasts placed “Turtles” well ahead of the second weekend of Marvel-Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which looked likely to finish the frame between $41 and $46 million.
“Turtles” started strongly Friday with initial estimates in the $19 to $25 million range — including $4.6 million in late-night screenings Thursday at 2,651 locations.

Just saying. 2007 did about 24 to 25 million for it's opening weekend, on a 35 million budget. It would gross about 54 domestic, and 90 million WW. Again, on a 35 million budget. And it still didn't get it's sequel.
The production budget for this new movie is believed to be anywhere between 125 to 150 million. Usually, not always, but usually, the OW is about half of what a movie will gross totally for it's domestic run. I'm seeing between 120 to 140 for it's domestic run. Not so great when you faction in the 125 to 150 production budget. But, the franchise does rely heavily on merchandise sold, so perhaps it will make things better in the long run.

Is the new movie merchandise really selling all that well? I mean, maybe when kids go see this movie they'll flock to the toy store and buy them all but every time I go to Target or Toys R' Us, I always see full shelves.
Look at Green Lantern, that movie was banking on hoping that the merchandise sales would keep the franchise alive but I think around like August or September of 2011...only two months after Green Lantern came out, the toys were all on clearance. Nobody was buying it and because sales of those Ryan Reynolds toys were so bad, they cancelled the Green Lantern animated series. Hell, I went to Six Flags last weekend and they STILL have the movie masters figures there for like...4 dollars.
Sure, kids are buying the TMNT 2012 merchandise....but I don't think everyone is grabbing the movie stuff just yet. I'll admit, when those toys came out I immediately grabbed a Raphael (my favorite) and Shredder. I'm keeping the figures in the box and they're fun to look at...but the fact remains every time I go out to a store, it's nothing but tons of un-purchased merchandise.

It's possible. When 2007 movie came out, the merchandise wasn't exactly disappearing from the store shelves either. Me personally, I got a couple of TMNT T-Shirts at Hot Topics, and that was it. Lack of merchandise sales could have been the nail in the 2007 TMNT coffin, despite it breaking out number one in it's OW and making a modest profit in the overall BO run.

Yeah, I was working at Target at the time and I can recall getting the merchandise in but no one really getting it. That was the first year I think I didn't buy anything TMNT figure related as well. I just couldn't get into the figures, they were too....blocky. I'm not really sure the right word for it.
Guess it will be interesting to see how low merchandise sales play a part if possible with this film. I know that's what was the final nail in the coffin for Speed Racer in 2008 too.

Where I live, the story is completely different. I have been to multiple Wal-Mart stores and everything is selling out. The store closest to me has two different displays of movie toys. I'll see them completely stocked, only to be gone two days later.
By the way, saw the movie for the 3rd time last night. The theater sold out every showing for the day. Never saw my theater this packed. Used a Guardians 3D screen between showings just to make room. It is an amazing time to be a Turtle!

First of all, cartoon movies were just becoming popular back then.. and Turtles, though on TV again, were nowhere near as popular as they are now. The 2003 series did well, but nothing like the new Nick series. Kids are crazy about Ninja Turtles like they were back in the late 80s.
If this movie does $150M domestically, it probably only needs needs $150M overseas. Add in the merchandise and the 3D glasses (that are sold out everywhere), and you have a huge hit.
I don't see how you can be skeptical here when the studio was seemingly very happy with a mid-40s opening. The extra $15M or $20M is going to blow them out of the water.

Paramount was wise to move the release date from June 6 to August 8. Had the movie opened in June, it really would have lost family audiences to both Maleficent and How to Train Your Dragon 2. The end of summer was lacking family-friendly releases and it was the perfect time to release it. They also realized that back in 2009 it worked to open G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra a little over a month later than Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. So, it made sense to release two of their major film releases a month apart again.

Oh and Splinter's origin was given to you in the movie. He's just a lab rat. A lab rat that decides to pick up a book and train his "kids" in ninjitsu because he feels it's a good parenting guide.
Do we even know that Saki is Shredder? Once again, Shredder is only an asian man in the film because of the backlash that they white-washed him and were going to make Sachs Shredder. I think you're grasping at straws here.

If my calculations are correct, I'm predicting the second weekend to be roughly 31 million. It's a 50% drop for the movie coming off a predicted 60 million OW. And this is figuring if the GA likes it. If not, expect 60% to 70% drop, which would be about 24- 18 million next weekend.
So, those are the numbers as I see it. Coming off a 60 million OW, if the audience digged it, 30 million, if the audience is split, 26, if the audience was disappointed, 24, if the audience didn't care for it, 18 million or less, for it's second weekend.
The last TMNT movie dropped 60% from OW to second weekend. In comparison to the movie that was actually loved by the GA, the first movie dropped only 25%. But this was when the TMNT was red hot, you had to wait a year for the VHS to be released and there was no threat on online piracy, which in turn is what is killing the movies drop percentages in this day and age.

Exactly. Most popular franchises are always red hot when during a movie's opening weekend. Imagine how Guardians of the Galaxy fans are feeling....but I too expect a sharp decline in the next weekend because for the majority of the audience, it's heavily split.

I doubt TMNT will be at 1 for a 2nd week, I assume The Expendables 3 will take no 1 next week.
But there is a slim chance that TMNT could stay at no 1 for a 2nd week as The Expendables 3 was leaked online a few weeks ago and probably won't do that well at the box office.

I'm absolutely shocked to see this doing so well. I guess August is the month of over-performing movies. As far as next week is concerned, I honestly think Let's Be Cops will take the #1 spot.
I'm curious what the legs will be like for this. The Fault in Our Stars had an excellent opening but had a massive drop the second weekend because everyone saw it when it came out and didn't feel like repeat viewings.

Just becoming popular? I'm pretty sure cartoon movies have always been popular. Look at Toy Story or the Lion King. I don't really see what you're getting at there.
Sure, box office analysts had this film pegged to come in a little lower and while that's all fine and dandy...people really need to see how it plays out and does into the next weekend. For me personally, any success of this movie is a true loss because I'm really not digging the direction and the universe set up for me in this first film.
I don't think the studio will take it's time and they'll try to rush their version of TMNT 2 by 2016 to strike while the iron is hot again. It'll be basically what happened with Amazing Spider-Man 2.
I haven't seen Spider-Man 2 so I can't comment.
However, a lot of people liked (or loved) the movie. I quite enjoyed it, so did everyone I was with. It was fast paced, simple, and fun. Exactly what I wanted.
Any success is a loss? Not true. If it wasn't a success, you'd probably have to wait another 20 years for a hopeful reboot. Even if it's a success, they could change it up a little to better please the critics or they could end up rebooting after a couple a movies.
A failure means bye bye Turtles from the big screen for a long, long time.

I don't know man, judging by the people coming in the review thread today and by everyone's opinions from the theater on Thursday night....this movie isn't going over very well.
Where do you get 20 years for a reboot? Please, look at the Hulk movies and Spider-Man films...those at least got a reboot within their franchise within 5 years a part from one another. Obviously this big opening weekend means people WANT TMNT films, but the studio just needs to realize they need to make good movies as well. A failure does not mean "buh bye" Turtles....it just means someone needs to produce a better product.

Are you kidding?
The Hulk made back it's budget, but didn't make the studio a lot of money overall from the project. They even put out a better product a few later and it was even less successful (still made the company money in the end, but not much). Neither Hulk film was a financial success in anyway, but they weren't complete flops.
Spider-Man? Of course they'd reboot it.. it did absolutely fantastic at the box office. I eluded to that by saying if it does well, but not as well as they think, they could reboot it. If it's a straight up failure? It's not getting a reboot for a long time.
I got 20 years from 1993 till 2014. It was a guesstimate, not an exact number, obviously. They tried to reboot Turtles once with a cheap film, and it didn't work. If this failed, you honestly see it getting a reboot in 5 years? Not a chance in hell. No one is going to throw their money into the Turtles again for a long time if this movie had of bombed.
This move becoming a moderate success would be the best thing to happen for the franchise. It forces them to up the ante a little, but we'll get a sequel.

HA! Here we go...
You're missing the points in what I was trying to get at clearly, it's a totally different world we live in now where comic book and cartoon pop culture franchises are big draws for Hollywood to make so they want to try and get these movies back out quickly because they know they have great appeal. Yes, Hulk made almost the same amount of money back as it did in and Spider-Man was such a huge hit that Sony wanted to keep the rights and revamp it again.
Clearly there's an interest in TMNT and there always has been, the new cartoon proves there's even MORE interest. Things are well in the TMNT universe but as a fan of the franchise, I can't see THIS movie becoming overly successful being anything other than a disappointment due to the material I was presented.

What you're saying makes absolutely no sense, so laugh at me all you want.
A studio is not going to throw money at another Turtles film if it was a failure. The only reason Hulk got another movie is because they realized they made a product that wasn't loved by the masses and they made their money back so taking another shot wasn't out of the question. When the next film did even worse, it's took them almost 6-years to even consider a new Hulk film and it's only close because of the Avengers scene. If Hulk doesn't come out as big of star this time, I wouldn't expect to see a Hulk solo movie anytime soon.
The Spider-Man reboot that you brought up made no sense. It was rebooted because they were done with their story and it made an insane amount of money.
Studio's don't want to lose money. That's not their goal. After a 21-year absence from the big screen, not including an underwhelming animated movie that didn't light up the box-office, a failure would have probably spelled the end of TMNT on the big screen for a long-time.

I completely disagree with that last statement and you're incredibly wrong about Spider-Man thinking the story was done (considering they wanted to do another trilogy in that series) but for the sake of not getting this thread locked, let's just knock it off.

Why would it get locked, we're on the topic of the box-office.
Yes, they wanted to continue the Spider-Man series but Raimi coudln't get a script to work to his liking and Tobey McGuire wasn't interested in going on. But that's not the point, the point is it made money, so a reboot or continuation was never not going to happen. It made money.
TMNT being a success, like it has been so far, is good for the franchise even if you don't like the direction. If it was a failure, we wouldn't see it come back. If it wasn't, no one would invest into making a new one considering the failure (plus it's box office running record).
I don't get how that's hard to understand. Then again, you said you completely disagreed with my last statement, so I guess you believe Studio's are in this business to lose money. Makes sense considering your rebuttals. Debate is now over.

The forum is ok sometimes except for the movie thead where everyone has been at each others throats over the movie as some people don't like change. Also we had a few trolls making arguements even worse. So it hasn't been pleasant for the last year or so. Paramount's pizza-eating mutants on pace to top $60 million, knock Marvel's space cowboys from top spot
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” raced to an estimated $25 million first day Friday, putting Paramount's pizza-eating comic book reptiles on course for an opening weekend north of $60 million.
If they keep up that pace, they'll easily knock “Guardians of the Galaxy” out of the top spot at the box office. And it will mark the second weekend in a row that the No. 1 film will blast well past the projections of analysts, who had the super turtle tale landing between $45 million and $50 million.

Yeah, that's the whole thing about the BO. It's not just OW, it's about LEGS! Legs can make or break a movie, even with an enormous opening weekend.
And to just look at things in other perspective. GOTG, looks to not be having a 50ish % drop, but a possible, near 70% drop, which sometimes indicated the audience may not like it enough to go back for second viewings.

.
This isn't just for you Hawkeye, but for anyone wondering why certain franchises are being rebooted/continued on and others are not. Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and X-Men are marvel properties that were contracted out to Sony and Fox. The jest of the contract is, those studios must have a movie come out no later than 5 years to keep the rights to distribute the franchise, failure to do this will result in those franchises falling back to Marvel studios. This is why we are not seeing Spider-Man and Wolverine in the Avengers. Anyone thinking of using Spider-Man, Fantastic Four or X-men as part of their arguments that a TMNT movie will be rebooted because these other three CBM have been already lost that argument. TMNT owners don't have to worry about losing rights, so if a movie isn't making money and they feel the franchise is limited on the big screen, then they just might scrap it altogether until one day a new CEO takes over and tries to give it a shot. Now, this did happen with X-Men, once Fox idiot Tom Rothman was let go from Fox because of his insistence on not leaving directors and producers alone, Bryan Singer finally came back to right the wrongs from X-Men 3 and the Wolverine origins. It is possible we could see a similar shake up with TMNT in 7 to 10 years.

Had this on another thread, but I should have put this in the box office thread to begin with...
But that weekend gross would still be pretty pathetic. Even the new Godzilla made over $90 million on the weekend it came out.
And it didn't even have a current/successful show that is helping rake (as one person had said) around half a Billion Dollars in merchandise (the new Nick toon). Or the 'it being a Marvel film' excuse.
Let alone Transformers 4's business, which is a mountain compared to this.
Around $100 million for a Part 4's opening. Even if you want to say "well, it's Transformers."
It's still a Part 4! So it didn't even have the 'well, it's the first time seeing these characters in Live action after 20 years' curiosity thing going for this new Turtles flick, and a part 4 still dwarfed this new Turtles one.
And if someone says "But Guardians..." Godzilla had Amazing Spider-Man 2 to deal with, and that's a big blockbuster (or was supposed to be).
And Godzilla had films like that to deal with...and if someone goes "but Spidey was in its' 2nd/3rd week", well so was Guardians which is a lesser known brand than Spider-Man.
Plus films like Neighbors, which is something to stand up against since nowadays we are in a trend of R-rated comedies doing very well (The Heat, 21 Jump Street and its' sequel 22 Jump Street, The Hangover trilogy).
And Transformers 4 had films like How to Train Your Dragon 2 (for kids) and 22 Jump Street (for older folks) to deal with as well.

Grats to Paramount and Platinum Dunes, I guess. They served up a weak movie and were rewarded for it. We'll continue to get weak plots with little to not character arcs for the sequels.
Oh well, guess it'll be in my retirement years before I can hope for a TMNT film I'll be able to consider good. Enjoy 'em for those that liked it.
With Guardians and dang near every other successful movie this year seeing a big drop off, I wonder how much of a drop TMNT will have next weekend. I still think they're going to see weak international results, though. Releases spread out all the way to December is a breeding ground for torrenting.
Or more specifically, will Guardians and TMNT both be toppled by Expendables 3 next weekend?

It's possible. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Expendables 3 is going to be Wesley Snipes first movie since he got out of jail. And if it's rated R, it might shockingly do well too. Past couple of years, R-rated flicks have been doing gangbusters against the kids movies. Plus, the kids will be going back to school too, so more drops in the daily BO.

Expendables 3 was given PG-13 rating. Dunno if that was planned or just how it fell. Sometimes you can think you're aiming for an R and get PG-13. Sometimes you think you're PG-13 and get an R and have to edit....like Whedon had to on The Avengers.

This. Over and over again. I've been saying this.
It's so obvious, and yet, they just don't care.
This weekend is a surprise to everyone, and although the trend has been a steep drop off, I'm starting to think Brad Fuller was right all along.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What 30 year old isn't going to see that, at the very least for nostalgic feelings, or just a laugh? Sure they'll be the turtles you remember, they eat pizza and all of that, but it's going to sell tickets on name recognition alone."
This movie might have legs, as expectations are just that low.

Expendables 3 is PG-13, not R. Plus there was the big story about how a DVD Quality/Screener copy that got leaked online and apparently a TON of people were able to see it/torrent it/etc. before Lions Gate tried to put an injunction on it.

My guess is this was the big weekend for TMNT. This weekend's opening haul included a lot of old fans going to see it despite their trepidation and parents dutifully trudging to the theater with their Nick TMNT fan kids. Those two groups have mostly all seen it now (thus the $50-60 million weekend) and you're probably not going to get many repeated viewings out of either. I could see the same teen crowd who eats up Michael Bay movies going in again and maybe a trickle of curious latecomers, but word of mouth on this movie is pretty terrible and I don't see it doing very well in the following weeks. My guess is it falls to #3-5 or even lower next weekend and it's out of theaters within a month, month and a half tops. I'm not trying to sound biased here, that's from having paid attention to the movie industry for 20+ years and knowing how Hollywood works.
I'll second that.
Bet I get beat down for it too.
Thirded. I hope this one doesn't get sequels and instead we get a reboot a few years down the line written and directed by someone who has read the comics. Can you imagine how great a Batman Begins-style reboot trilogy that opened with something like a Baxter Stockman vs. Rat King story could be?

they obviously made it PG-13, cause they want that film to appeal to a Mass Audience, But its certainly gonna alienate the fans of the previous films, that wanted a hard R rating like the last one.

I was thinking to myself that one thing that makes this impressive is the fact that a child's ticket is a lot cheaper then an adults ticket. the show I went to had more children then adults. So had the show been filled with adults only the movie would have made even more $$$ (I am only assuming that most showings world wide were mostly children)

All right! Paramount really knew what they were doing with the marketing and appealing it to audiences.
“‘Guardians’ is a great movie and it’s always tough to come right behind a great movie,” said Megan Colligan, president of domestic marketing and distribution for Paramount. “Ultimately we played more like a family film and they played a notch older…The great thing about summer is the marketplace is able to expand to allow for these two films.”
Males made up 61% of “Ninja Turtle’s” opening audience, which was 45% under the age of 25. That was roughly the same as “Guardian’s” debut weekend, which was 55% 26 and older, and 56% male. “Ninja Turtles” success was fueled by two core groups. It appealed to both younger crowds and twenty-somethings who remembered the original 1990s television show, films and toylines with fondness.
“A lot of it was nostalgia,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. “There is a generational affection for these characters.”
“Ninja Turtles” was a big $125 million gamble for Paramount Pictures, which is trying to demonstrate to its corporate leaders at Viacom that it can pull off big-screen synergy. In the case of “Ninja Turtles,” that meant capitalizing on the highly-rated cartoon reboot that was overseen by Nickelodeon, another Viacom property.
“This is a really important property for all of Viacom,” said Colligan. “The show is a big hit, and in terms of the toys and merchandise, kids have a huge appetite for it and really, really love this brand.”

New comments from Megan Colligan, head of domestic marketing and distribution at Paramount Pictures, about the film's success.
The return of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" earned $65 million in ticket sales at U.S. and Canadian movie theaters over the weekend, easily winning a box office battle with Marvel's outer space hit "Guardians of the Galaxy."
"Ninja Turtles," a reboot of a franchise born in 1980s comic books and popularized in TV cartoons, rang up another $28.7 million in international markets for a global debut of $93.7 million, according to distributor Paramount Pictures which wasted no time in announcing a sequel, set to open June 3, 2016.
"This exceeded all our expectations," said Megan Colligan, head of domestic marketing and distribution at Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc as is Nickelodeon Movies, which together released the film.
"Families came out in a very big way" while teenagers were drawn to the film's incredible action sequences," said Colligan, explaining how the film's box office performance was driven far beyond the expected fan base of 25 to 35-year olds.

Other comments about the success of this film along with Guardians of the Galaxy from Variety.
The domestic box office ended July a shell of itself, brought low by a scrawny series of would-be blockbusters.
What a difference a month makes. “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” have sparked a rally at the multiplexes the past two weeks, crushing records and becoming the first- and fourth-highest openings in August history.
“August has become a star of a month at the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. “It used to be thought of as the dog days of summer and as sort of a dumping ground.”
The domestic box office ended July down more than 20% from summer 2013 and suffering from eight straight weeks of declines. Thanks to “Guardians'” $94.3 million opening and “Ninja Turtles'” $65 million debut, it now is 16% behind.
The past weekend was a marked improvement on the same period a year ago. Total ticket sales stood at $186 million, according to BoxOffice.com, a 16.8% jump from the same weekend in 2013 when “We’re the Millers” and “Elysium” premiered. Year to date, the box office is down 5.5%, a lot brighter than the nearly 7% it was off a mere two weeks ago.
“There’s two new franchises in the first two weeks of August,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “No other month this summer produced two huge new franchises.”
Going into the summer, both “Ninja Turtles,” a reboot of a popular series of films from the 1990s, and “Guardians,” which featured a lesser-known band of Marvel comicbook characters, were seen as question marks. They had brand awareness, but they weren’t considered to be as potent as “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past” or any of the tentpoles films that crowded into theaters in May and June. Their success could inspire studios to more actively scout out August as a time to launch some of their bigger films.
“What we’re seeing is the audiences are still there for these major franchises,” said Bock. “It doesn’t have to just be the leftovers.”

In Mexico, it grossed $6.9M from 653 locales, which bested last weekend’s opening of Guardians of the Galaxy which took in $6.5M. In Russian, it opened to $11.1M or 13% ahead of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and nearly doubling the No. 2 pic in the marketplace — Guardians of the Galaxy in its second weekend out of the gate.

Here's a telling piece of info from Boxofficemojo.com, the Sunday numbers, alone:
1. Ninja Turtles $17,810,885
2. Guardians of the Galaxy $12,865,127
That's only a little less than $5 million difference...and Guardians was in it's 2nd weekend.
Looking at the daily box office totals, the TMNT numbers take drastic day to day drops:
Friday 8/8 - $25,602,161
Saturday 8/9 - $22,162,059 -13.4%
Sunday 8/10 - $17,810,885 -19.6%
Judging on Guardian's returns we can expect a substantial drop off during the work week, and a slight rebound next weekend, but only about 1/2 of the amount of the opening weekend. Meaning about $10 million give or take.
It may have taken #1, but it's already pretty weak against just Guardians.

Guardians broke records on Monday-Thursday after its opening weekend. Yet despite that, they saw more than a 50% drop to this weekend.
50-60% (or more) drop off after opening weekend has been standard this year, it seems, with very few remaining dominant.
TMNT will probably drop to around 40m next weekend, but that's all they need to get into the black on budget. After that, it's all profitable.

Probably closer to $30-35 mill next weekend, but even so that "profit" from subsequent ticket sales won't be much going into the second week and the 3rd weekend.

That's provided it doesn't drop much, mind you - a "standard" 50% would get it $32-33m next weekend.
Jester makes a good point, though. GotG's OW numbers were massive for August, and even dropping 50-something percent meant that it still did great numbers for a second-week release this month. The numbers were between TMNT's first weekend and GotG's second were much closer than both movies' first weekends compared directly. It's possible that TMNT could drop a lot quicker than GotG did, or will.
Not predicting anything, mind you. This August has proven especially unpredictable.

It's the overseas box office I expect to be painfully small, mainly because it's going to be downloaded through torrents between now and the release dates all the way out to December. Still don't know what they're thinking with that.
I'd think you'd want worldwide release within at least 3 weeks of its premiere (on ANY film, not just TMNT).
And I was saying around 40 million based on the 93 it took worldwide. Wasn't thinking just domestic. Just to clear up the math differences. ;)

First off, I'm pleasantly pleased with the opening weekend performance that tells me that the return of the franchise to early 1990s levels is just about there. The problem with some later global releases is that it will be easier to acquire a copy as the movie heads onto streaming, TV, and then video. Considering that the marketing with Nick hasn't been quite as widespread as the OT era was, it proves that there is still interest in the foursome. I predict around $175 million/$325 worldwide when all is set and done. IMO once you've profited in the black, its enough to justify a sequel, especially with Nick still going strong after almost two years.
Also worth noting: most of the other big action blockbusters this year dropped by at least 60% in their second weekend.

I think the nunchuck issue here has been relaxed here now (still illegal to carry them around in the streets). They haven't edited the Nick show with Mikey using the nunchucks so I think we are safe. The Movie looks like it's a 12A so I doubt they will be editing it.
I think they wanted to release it in October because kids are off school for a week.
If they release TMNT 2 later than the US again then I think us UK fans should start bombard Nick and Paramount with angry tweets, emails ect.

I'm guessing positive word of mouth may allow Guardians to sneak back in front of TMNT after the predictable 2nd weekend dip.
Overall, domestically, it should get to at least 135-140 million. You've got the Labour Day weekend in America, so that will help. Overseas, I will be very surprised if it doesn't make at least 250 million. 300 million is not impossible (some would say it’s actually quite likely). All in all Paramount will be quite pleased. They've got another franchise, which is something all studios want. It will never be a Transformers-size franchise (in terms of box-office gross), but it will be strong nonetheless.

Hard to say. After its huge first weekend, not many people expected TMNT to dethrone Guardians... until it did. This August has been a bit surprising all around for the box office.
Regardless of who's on top and as long as neither drops significantly more or less than the usual this year, we could see the two nearly in a dead heat next weekend.

100% agree dude. TMNT is huge overseas as well. It's a global franchise. Not worried about all these doom and gloom posts lol. This movie, at the end of the day will make plenty of money and that sequel will begin production early next year. And then we can listen for the little updates leak out month after month. Any movie can be compared to other more successful films and be seen as " less successful". It's a weak attempt to take away what this movie has accomplished so far. So.. who cares lol.
I hope Let's Be Cops is number one. The tickets the Wayans family alone will buy should be enough for that.

Looks like tuesday is better known as bounce back day :)
Tuesdays traditionally do better numbers than Mondays. I think a lot of theatres do "cheap nights" on Tuesdays as well. (I know my theatre does - I saw Guardians for the second time last night and it was a madhouse.)
Most movies were up a bit last night, too (http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2014-08-12&p=.htm).

Lifting the overall box office are a pair of heavyweights. In its second week, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” should see its $64.5 million debut cut nearly in half, but will still likely be the weekend’s top grosser with more than $30 million.

At first I was thinking to myself that TMNT had to be Transformers big to be successful to the studios. I am happy this is not the case and that the makers of the new TMNT movie are happy with its success so far.
Ever since movies started making 1 Billion at the box office, I was thinking to myself I guess studios wont be happy unless there big Blockbuster makes $800 million min world wide.
I don't know why I started thinking like this, but I think I should stop caring so much about how much a movie makes at the BO, because at the end of the day it really does not effect my life in anyway.

Predictions from Entertainment Weekly:
In what just as easily could have been a box office showdown from 1990, Sylvester Stallone and his buddies face off against the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at theaters this weekend. And even though The Expendables 3 boasts a star-studded action hero cast of a just-bygone era, the Turtles might still win out.
The long-gestating adaptation of The Giver opens wide as well, playing alongside the buddy comedy Let’s Be Cops, which hit theaters on Wednesday. Indie darling Boyhood expands to just under 800 theaters, too.
Here’s how things might play out on this late summer weekend.
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — $27 million
The Turtles might just hold on to the No. 1 spot after opening to a much higher-than-expected $65.6 million last weekend. A 58 percent drop, a little steeper than Guardians‘ second week fall, would put the pic in the $27 million range.
2. The Expendables 3 — $25 million
Lionsgate debuts the third installment in Sylvester Stallone’s testosterone-filled franchise in 3,221 North American locations Friday, and tracking puts it in the $20 to $25 million range. This latest take pits Barney (Stallone) and Christmas (Statham) against Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), an Expendables co-founder gone bad whom Barney assumed he already killed. Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, Ronda Rousey, and Terry Crews also star in the pic, which currently has a 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But the biggest strike against this one is the fact that it leaked online in advance of its theatrical debut—suggesting that the most eager fans, who helped The Expendables and its sequel open to $34.8 million and $28.6 million, respectively, might not be interested in heading back to the theaters for this one.

Box Office Mojo's weekend forecast (http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3891&p=.htm):
1. Ninja Turtles - $26.2 million (-60%)
2. Guardians - $24.9 million (-41%)
3. Expendables 3 - $24 million
4. Let's Be Cops - $17 million ($26 million 5-day)
5. The Giver - $16.5 million

An awesome movie overtaking a horrible movie isn't that surprising. Word of mouth is gonna kill this quickly. The ONLy thing going for this is the nostalgia or the ones either curious enough to see how bad it is or being in denial that it just can't be that bad and are anxious to see for themselves.

It comes up because it's TMNT's main competition, it was released a week earlier, and they're basically neck-and-neck at the box office at this point. (Also, it's great! Also that.)
But since it was brought up, it made $4.23m last night to TMNT's $4.32m.
I'm just curious to see how the weekend plays out. They're both doing well, but the fact that GotG actually has a chance to overtake TMNT in its third week (or come damn close) is impressive. This kind of situation playing out in an August is pretty unusual, I think?

Not saying it's definitely the case but I get the vibe that people are seriously 'choosing sides' over movies. To the point where people believe there is a good and bad side to it and they're doing the right thing by backing a particular film. It's like...come on. It's movies. Calm down. The world isn't hanging in the balance here.

Exactly. Every time UPROXX or Comicbook.com post something on facebook about TMNT, especially something good, the comments are filled with people who are all "but...but Gaurdians!"
I've never heard of GotG before (as a comic). I'll see it when it gets to the cheap theater (that's not because of any supposed battle with TMNT, it is only because there are very, very few movies I see when they first come out. TMNT was one. The next won't likely be until Episode VII).

Largely, seeing if the Turtles defend their top spot, despite an iffy storyline surrounding them and making them the box office underdog for it, is more just a bit of fun than anything else. :)

I'm so glad that it seems a good amount of people still feel this way. I really can't find anything redeemable or enjoyable in this film at all. I think this is what makes me so sad to think this is getting a sequel, because this universe they created for me has some of the worst representations of the characters thus far....as well as having a crap story.

The way this thing is dropping like a rock in the BO is telling. The sequel definitely has it's battle ahead of it. I'm curious to what the production budget is going to be. This one now looks like it's going to barely break even, much less churn a profit. And then the directors says he's going to add in possible Bebop and Rocksteady and Dimension X? This is going to be like a 200 million dollar budget, and I just can't see Paramount throwing that kind of money to it.

Unless the movie is making like 400 OS or more, then don't count on it to save the BO with a big budget. Remember, the studios get less than 50 percent of the OS BO compared to 80 percent or more domestic. In some countries like China, they have a max window of 2 weeks of theatrical release, and they only get 20 percent of the revenue, the rest goes to the Government.
Sometimes DVD sales and toy sales do help, like in case of Fantastic Four and Kick Ass 2, but in the end, I believe both sequels more or less kind of flopped for those franchises. The only reason why Fox is doing another Fantastic Four, is so they can maintain the rights, if they don't have a movie going on at least every 5 years, then the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four revert back to Marvel studios.

I love how last week everyone was saying I was crazy for saying that Paramount announcing a sequel was a move made out of desperation. Now I don't look so crazy now do I.
This movie needed to at least break even domestically in order to be even considered to make a sequel. If you think the toys will earn them money, go to the toy stores in a month or two, if the "Ninja Turtles" box art is still on the shelves, the merch isn't doing well. Don't forget money was invested to make those toys, they're not going to make money until they've paid off production costs (could be tens of thousands for each figure), oh and don't forget Walmart will kick your stuff off of their shelves if it's not selling incredibly well.
Viacom has stock holders, if you really think they're going to announce they're Q3 earnings as "well TMNT made slightly more than what we put into it " as a success, you're crazy.

In a soft weekend for all newcomers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy will easily land the No. 1 and No. 2 box office spots with the Turtles off 60% in its second weekend out as they both continue to play to kids out of school. Turtles will take in around $26M while the Guardians will end up with around $23M for the three-day as it stand now but observers think that the gap between them might close as we head into Saturday. Guardians, of course, has the advantage of holding onto those IMAX screens.

Half? No way. No freaking way. More like a 60 to 70 percent decrease this weekend. It's probably going to be making no more than max 30 million, but I am seeing more around 26 million this upcoming weekend.
Well, looks like my BO prediction for TMNT is right again. 26 million.

The pizza-eating reptiles are estimated to top the box office with a gross in the mid-to-high $20 millions this weekend. Produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, the film was made for $125 million and thus far has grossed $117 worldwide.
Only three titles — Paramount’s “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” — have managed to win two weekends so far this summer

Alright, 'you go guys'... no matter what they did with the story they put you in or other choices made, ya can't keep a good Turtle down.
"TMNT" joins only three other movies -- Paramount's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and Fox's "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" -- that have come in no. 1 at the summer box office for two consecutive weekends.

I won't be overly surprised if Guardians ultimately takes home the larger profit, once both have left all theaters globally, however it's nice to see the Turtles at least grab the top seat, defend that position, and present a challenge to Guardians and make them work a bit for those earnings. ;) lol

But they both got sequels, so clearly they're both considered successful by their studios. Look at it that way: if you enjoyed both movies, there's more to come.

I'm happy for GOTG because it was a great movie with a solid cast. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable I found it.
It makes me wonder how much diversity there is in ticket gross vs income gross. Children's tickets vs. 3D vs. Imax. I'm sure that is really helping GOTG.

Uh, last I looked, GOTG is kicking TMNT in the overall BO race, and it's soundtrack is also number one. TMNT will be lucky to see 150 million domestic, much less 200 million, which GOTG already has. The fact that GOTG is matching TMNT in the BO in it's now third week, is telling. Also, the drops are also considerable. GOTG had a 56 % drop, typical and good for a comic book movie. TMNT is looking at a 60+ percentage drop. That is not a good sign.
And also of note, the number one movie last year, I think was number one for only one week. Regardless, it still made over a billion dollars. It was this little movie called Frozen.

I wouldn't worry about the overseas numbers yet as it's not out in every country so it hopefully the numbers will pick up in September.

Clearly most sources were wrong to think that it was a mistake for Paramount to release the film in August instead of June. August originally had little to none movies that were targeting families. Most families went to see Maleficent and How to Train Your Dragon 2 in early summer. It was also smart to wait a little over a month after another action-packed film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, was released.
I hate how it's performing the way it is overseas. :(
Its overseas release schedule is very staggered. Most of Europe's biggest territories get it in September and October, for example. It doesn’t come out here until October. Speaking of the domestic gross, in all honesty, a drop of 56% for a film like this that was apparently universally hated is fairly respectable. Now that the first two weeks are out of the way, and with nothing really in terms of real competition coming any time soon, it should find pretty steady footing now. Will probably make between 140-150 million in North America. Not too shabby at all.

Eh, there is no telling how that movie will go. Personally, I'm going to see it because two of my favorite actors are going to be in it. But, sometimes R-rated movies do great against the more kid friendly PG-13 flicks, and sometimes they do sh!t.
Has anyone really rallied for a sequel to Sin City, though? Like, really cried for one? Also, why on Earth is it being released nine years after the first one? I think they've left it too long. It will probably have an OW somewhere in the low to mid twenties. So it should take the number one spot.

Just saying, being a hater of "haters" hasn't turned out for the best either. (Edit: And having opposing opinions does not automatically make a person a "hater.")
If really rudely criticizing "haters" is a-okay by some of these folks, how about "haters of 'haters'"? Would doing that make me a "hater of haters of 'haters'"?

201 off of a 125 million dollar budget? Vs a movie released 24 years ago and off of a 13 million dollar budget? Not exactly bragging rights in my opinion.
You have a point, this movie has not even broken even by Hollywood's standers, it would need to make $250 million just to break even, so it shocked me when the sequel was announced before this movie turned a profit. Guardians just reached $400 million worldwide, and has only made a profit of $78 million, its sequel was announced before it mad a profit.
I don't understand how some movies can have a sequel announced before the current movie makes a profit. I have read before that a movie has to make X amount of money before a sequel is green lit that does not seem to be the cause with these 2 movies.
check this out http://deadline.com/2010/07/studio-shame-even-harry-potter-pic-loses-money-because-of-warner-bros-phony-baloney-accounting-51886/
when I just read this i could not believe it. after reading this it makes me think.
I think everyone should read this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accounting
The 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding was considered hugely successful for an independent film, yet according to the studio, the film lost money.[11] Accordingly, the cast (with the exception of Nia Vardalos who had a separate deal) sued the studio for their part of the profits. The original producers of the film have sued Gold Circle Films due to Hollywood accounting practices because the studio has claimed the film, which cost less than $6 million to make and made over $350 million at the box office, lost $20 million.[12]
Winston Groom's price for the screenplay rights to his novel Forrest Gump included a 3% share of the profits; however, due to Hollywood accounting, the film's commercial success was converted into a net loss, and Groom received only $350,000 for the rights and an additional $250,000 from the studio.
When I found all this out it made me ask myself why does i can how much money a movie makes it obviously does not matter.
Anyways I could go on and on about this, but I better stop here. I am sorry if I went off track for a but I think its still relevant as am talking about BO results in general.

Noooot really the kind of entrance I would personally recommend making... but to each their own I suppose. Either way it never really reflects too well on a person to start off on that kind of note.
Just saying, being a hater of "haters" hasn't turned out for the best either. (Edit: And having opposing opinions does not automatically make a person a "hater.")
Don't worry, this will probably be my last post. I understand my post was very counter-productive but I'm not looking to make friends on here either. It is just baffling to me that someone can spend so much time talking about something they don't like - what good does it do? And to do it on multiple forums? Why? Yes, I know "haters gonna hate". But speak your mind and leave it at that. For example, I really HATE TMNT 3 but I'm not going to go on every TMNT 3 thread and say the same thing over and over. I really dislike country music but I'm not trolling every country music video on Youtube just to say I think country sucks. Perhaps I'm being a hypocrite by voicing my dislike of "haters". It's not going to do any good, I imagine.
But the sheer amount of them on this forum, and the fact that they post THE EXACT SAME THING on every thread is what has kept me from being an active poster here. It's disheartening and it has completely turned me off from posting. I come here because I enjoyed the movie and want to find out as much as I can but it's incredibly difficult when every thread is ruined by the same people who continue to have to "make their point".
