View Full Version : How much was actually cut? *Spoilers*

I went to go see the movie for the second time tonight, and this time I really had the chance to think about it.. I still enjoyed it, I still cried at the end.. But I was able to think about it in a new way and to truly LOOK at it.

We all know now that the whole Trench coat Raph part of the movie was cut.. But what was the context? Where were they going in this image --

http://www.liveforfilms.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/TMNT-Megan-Raphael-1.jpg

Then we all know about Kevin Eastman's cameo being cut out, but does anyone know what his cameo actually was?

Also does anyone feel like the whole Eric Saks NOT being The Shredder had something to do with the fact that the internet was bitching about the whitewashing of Oroku Saki that they felt the need to put him in there? To be honest, whenever I see The Shredder fight the Turtles, I always picture Eric Saks in the outfit.. Not Oroku Saki.

Does anyone else think that was tacked on?

On top of that, what about the whole Karai thing? With the exception of her being in the room with Eric Saks, she doesn't even interact with the Turtles at all. It seems like she was just added to scenes because the character tested positively with the audience of the Nickelodeon show (as well as her inclusion in pretty much every Turtles re-boot since her introduction). They never really make mention of Shredder or any of the other people saying,"Ah, well.. Karai is dead." . It's like no one even knew that she existed?

Plus -- Why even have Eric Saks as some super genius/scientist of Saks industries, when you could simply have him as Baxter Stockman, and he could own TCRI.

I know that some of the drafts of the script had leaked, but I'm just curious what all got cut out, and if anyone has ANY information about this?

Discuss. :tcool:

Blame this on the fact that the people involved did not care about making a cohesive, well thought out film.

Aside from 'The Blue Door' 2012 draft with Schrader and alien turtles, what other drafts of the script have leaked out?

as for cut/changed material, here are a few off of the top of my head... some thoughts, some ramblings...

-Visual Guide script page-- nonexistent in the final cut, pointing to different structure of the first act. By page 24, we've already seen lab rat Splinter.
-Sacks wearing the old samurai glove, looking a bit angry at April
-Sacks looking at Shredder Armor
-Raph in disguise with April, getting into Abby Elliot’s Porsche
-April in the lair, looking at a table full of ninja weapons
-Foot Solider Hari Kari/Sepuku scene? A Foot actor mentioned it on Twitter.
-Raph outside in the daytime with April and Times Square costumed characters... remember April with Raph's sai in her boots?
-Vern in the sewer lair with April
-Sacks as Shredder! This wasn’t a bait/switch... he was definitely Shredder earlier in production.
-Did someone mention that Baxter Stockman is in the credits?
-Party Wagon!!!--- the van was moved around the city quite a bit during production for only having one small shot at night.
-Legend of the Yokai. A fully animated and produced promo that has NOTHING to do with the story of the final film? My guess is that this was supposed to play heavier into the movie. Was Shredder trying to create Yokai with the alien mutagen in order to have control over the creatures and not risk the ancient prophecy coming true yadda yadda yadda?

I think that there could have been a GREAT script hiding somewhere. I enjoyed the movie, I really did.. But it seemed the entire time as if some high up executive who knew nothing about the Turtles just wanted to make as much money as physically possible by including all of these characters and trying their best not to piss people off.

I just got out of the first viewing for me about an hour ago and noticed it myself. Why have a toy called Trenchcoat Raphael if its not in the movie? Apparently Playmates Toys did not get the memo in time when reshoots were done back in April.

I thought I just missed the Kevin Eastman cameo.

I mentioned Karai and Taylor needing more screen time. Both could have been effective in the plot presented especially playing off Karai and Eric's step-sibling connection.

They took out the trench coat scene?
I guess it time to start buying that Raph trench coat figure because... you know... that's, like, a figure based on a scene that didnt happen and that's special or something?

I have this feeling that when Splinter was telling the story to April, and we see him flashing back to when he was giving Leo his swords, and then the movie just rushed to the next scene, was it me, or did they cut out the scene of Splinter giving the weapons to the other Turtles. Mind you, we also saw Leo without his mask, this would have been interesting to see all of the Turtles without the masks. But it just didn't happen. I still think this scene was shortened.

I wonder, if they ever do any CGI on those scenes, because if they did, isn't that kind of like just throwing money into the garbage if you're not going to use it in the film?

I also came out of the theatre wondering about the Raph in disguise scenes that were cut. I'd assume that this was supposed to happen after the sewer lair was attacked and Raph and April were trying to find someone to help them get to Sacks' estate? It sure made a lot more sense, and time saving, to just call Vernon like in the movie didn't it?

I'm also confused about why Eric Sachs was changed to Eric Sacks? It's just a letter, and yes not a big deal, but why was that made into a deal? Why change it?

Dr. Baxter Stockman? Where? Did I just miss him? The only places I could think he was was at Sacks' party / news conference thing. I missed him though.

And then I am a little confused about Eric Sacks being The Shredder or not. I don't mean in the finished film but during the casting and filming of it. Unless someone who made the movie tells us any differently, I'm going to assume Eric Sacks was originally going to be The Shredder until the fan backlash and then they changed it to not be Sacks and be someone we can assume is Oroku Saki. They didn't actually say his name in the film however.

So those are my couple small gripes and then my two bigger gripes were the deleted scenes and the Eric Sacks / Shredder thing.

I enjoyed it but the **** felt super rushed. I almost feel like it should've/could've been 15-20 minutes longer just in order to flesh out and expand upon, oh I dunno... everything. The movie was super condensed. I almost feel like it was originally supposed to be longer, but then maybe all the negative feedback and fanboy outrage made them panic and re-shoot/shorten everything last minute. I swear it feels like at least a 3rd of movie was shown in the trailers. Despite that, it was very entertaining (It was very satisfying to finally see some decent action/fight scenes in a TMNT film) and pretty much what I expected. While I may not like it, PG-13 rated action/comedy is about as edgy/deep this franchise will get on the big screen.

I bet you nearly all of the Turtle's footage from the movie, is nearly all up online via the Trailers. I'm not kidding, I honestly think they pretty much leaked nearly every thing to do with the Turtle's on screen footage.

There is another scene that was cut, And You can see it in the B-Roll Footage, Megan Fox shot a scene with April O'Neil in front the Camera saying. "They were born in Shadow, They lived in Shadow, They fight, In Shadow, And they always will. This is April O'Neil with Channel 6 News."

I was assuming that this would have been a scene from the ending of the film, but its not in it.

You can find some of the stuff that was cut in the B-Roll Footage below.

That b-roll footage is super fascinating because there is a ton of evidence of restructuring of the plot and the size of certain roles, particularly of Vern Fenwick and Eric Sacks.

It seemed that Vernon met the turtles much earlier initially based off April’s line, “Where are we?” when she’s clearly in the lair in the b-roll footage. There’s also that one shot in the first teaser trailer of April and Vern looking panicked during the sewer attack.

The b-roll also clearly points to Eric Sacks donning the Shredder armor in the original version. He seems obsessed with the Foot Clan and decides to assume the Shredder persona, but with some high tech upgrades, which also makes the Foot being a paramilitary organization instead of a clan of ninjas more logical.

The footage with Oraku Saki seems to be obvious reshoots. The sets are sparse with very little detail in those scenes. Saki takes out one guy dressed in the paramilitary Foot gear by hand and then has a few dialogue scenes with Sacks in what seemed like the same location. All the footage with the Shredder armor was just a voice over dub after that.

It seems originally Vern and April squared off against Karai and the Foot while the Turtles took on Sacks in the Shredder armor. There’s b-roll footage of April, Vern, and Karai on a set with a ton of beds filled with presumably sick soldiers. You can also see and hear the director give Will Arnett direction about how to fight a Foot soldier.

As much as I dislike a lot about that project, I think, producers should have sticked to their guns and at least do not make haste changes during production. It has made already weak story even more similar to the patchwork and, I bet, opened a few plot holes and oddities.

I wonder, are there chances to receive some of the cut / alternate scenes material on the DVD or something like that?

Do we know exactly what role Karai and Irma were supposed to have in the film? It seems most of their film time was cut respectively especially this seqence with Raph in disguise. Obiviously after the other three were taken and Raph goes to rescue them this takes place but why the disquise? I assume Taylor came to their rescue with her car instead of Vernon with the news van? Meanwhile later on Eric was shoting at April and Vernon probably as the last filmed scene to cover for Eric not being Shredder removing Karai from the equation.

Speaking of blueray I never bothered getting a blueray player. Why not put the deleted scenes on dvd?

Blu Ray is superior to DVD, particularly if you have surround sound and a modern television. It's not that expensive anymore. Seriously, you can get a BD player for like $50 now and movies are only just a dollar or two more than DVD.

I was happy it was cut. It looked cheesy, the costume looked bad, and I'm glad there was not too much Raph-only screen time (out of the four turtles) since I like the ensemble.

Edit: Oh sorry you meant the twerking. I'm glad that was cut too. It was too unLeo like.

I'd be surprised if any deleted scenes that directly contradict Saki as Shredder will be included.

I'm with you Sumac, I wish the producers had stuck to their guns as well. Instead of changing so much of the film, they could have just added a scene near the end where Oroku Saki receives word that someone in America had assumed his persona once the Shredder armor is discovered in that crater and then likely shown on the news. They could have shown Saki, the real Shredder wearing more traditional armor, surrounded by a clan of actual ninjas upset about what just transpired, aware of the turtles, and ready to take them on in the sequel.

The Billboard scene where Mikey and Raph jumped on the image of a Model covering the Bra area, In the TV Spots, We hear Raph yelling out. "Over here!" And then they both stick to the Billboard.

That scene is shown at the very end of the film, But you don't hear the dialogue, Nor Mikey's little laugh.

The placement of that whole scene was weird. When it started playing during the end credits, I thought they were going to alternate between the animated credits and joke bits, but then it was the only one that played. It seems like it was part of a longer sequence that was scrapped, perhaps returning to the sewers after the final battle, and the filmmakers decided to include it in the credits because they spent the time and money animating it.

The CGI was well does for my eyes. It should also be noted that the trench coat turtle scene has a toy that was made out of it, I guess Playmates can't be too happy that scene was cut. Since it's supposed to be Raph I guess that scene has to happen. I guess most of the cuts were to make it into a quick movie and might be added in the Blu-Ray?

Me too. It would definitely be interesting.. I want to see what movie it was that the trailers were leading us up to, just to see all of what the hell happened in it!! I'm sure that it's DRASTICALLY different from the film that we ended up with.

Perhaps it can be something like "Halloween 6", where the theatrical film was cut to shreds from what was initially shot, but then later on a bootleg of "Halloween 6: The Producer's Cut" was released, and was a better film overall.. I'm really hoping for a TMNT Original Cut. Not that anything was wrong with the movie, I just want to see how much different it is.

Blame this on the fact that the people involved did not care about making a cohesive, well thought out film.

I will actually counter that and say that if the makers stuck to their guns and left Eric Sacks as Shredder, then a more coherent film would have been a possibility. It was a thought-out film beforehand, but fan outcry made the studio change an awful lot of the film in post-production, which is never a good thing. The whole plot with the poison would have made a hell of a lot more sense if Sacks was left as Shredder. I think TMNT is quite good proof that studios shouldn’t always listen to fan backlash. The real Oroku Saki could have been introduced in a sequel (and he probably would have been, because of the fan backlash, providing they stuck to their guns for the first film).

Is there a list somewhere of what all was changed because of (or blamed on) fans?

Things actually affecting it, not something like the title change, because while silly and unnecessary that's entirely benign.

Though in all fairness some of the changes the film makers thought they wanted to do to some of the most fundamental parts of the entire TMNT concept was kind of stupid. Artistic license only goes so far, it shouldn't include taking a jackhammer to the foundation.

It says something about this movie that turning Shredder into a middle aged white guy was somehow the LEAST egregious bastardization to the lore this movie made.

It says something about this movie that turning Shredder into a middle aged white guy was somehow the LEAST egregious bastardization to the lore this movie made.

Exactly the point I'm about to extrapolate on. You're Good at Things.

The real Oroku Saki could have been introduced in a sequel (and he probably would have been, because of the fan backlash, providing they stuck to their guns for the first film).

Many, many people have already pointed out the idiocy of using a Scab Shredder in the first movie only to "reveal" Oroku Saki for the sequel or in a post-credits "A-HA!" scene. All that would do is piss people off by using a fake throw-away bad guy for the first movie. Enormous waste of time and effort, that would have been.

Blaming fans for wanting an adaptation of the property they are fans of to actually resemble or retain some recognizable elements of what they enjoy is really stupid, to me. "How DARE you want the thing you like to still have the things you like about it? It's a different version, DUH!" I can't really grasp that kind of thinking. If you like Pepsi, and someone gives you Mountain Dew in a Pepsi Can, you'd be pretty annoyed that they didn't stick to the script and just give you what you were expecting.

No, the problem isn't that they tried a "new take" or that the fans didn't "give it a chance". It's none of that. The Major Problem simply is These People Specifically shouldn't be working on this franchise. Since the very start, they have had NO "Good" ideas, only "Bad" and "Much Worse" ideas. If any of their "fresh, new" ideas had actually been done for a reason OTHER THAN, "it's Different", they may have had a shot. But they simply DIDN'T put any thought into any of it at all, because they were sure it wouldn't matter (and in the end, it kind of didn't). Every single tweak, change, and screw-up they did, they did ONLY because, "Hey, it's Different", and NO good ideas ever came from using Change For Change's Sake as your starting point. There has to be a reason, a justification, otherwise, you're just whacking off, insisting your ideas are better than what's already been proven to work. Sometimes that works out, other times, as in this case, you get a case where everyone was so busy tripping over themselves to cram in their New And Different ideas they forgot to go ahead and actually put together a movie that 1. Made Sense and 2. Wasn't Unbearable.

It's a "sh*t rolls downhill" problem. The wrong people are in charge of making all the major decisions, thus, nothing good could have ever come from this movie to begin with. Their approach is flawed, the foundation is cracked, and the only solution is to knock it all down and start over in another 15 years. In the meantime, we can all be "content" with what we have, doubled-down with a side dish of guilt knowing that, somehow, it's all Our Fault the movie wasn't any good. Heh. Yeah, I'm sure it was. Our fault. We were just too short-sighted to see how "Great" it would have been to sit through a movie with a fake Shredder, only to have the real guy pop out and go "GOTCHA!" during the credits.

How dare we.

Exactly the point I'm about to extrapolate on. You're Good at Things.

How dare we.

Exactly.

And besides, there was absolutely NO INDICATION that Oroku Saki was ever going to show up at all. In a post credits scene or a sequel or any of that.

For all intents and purposes, Eric Sacks was this movie universe's Shredder.

And that sucks balls. Because there was no f*cking reason to not only add in a completely new, made up for this movie character as Shredder, but to also completely delete Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki, probably the two most integral parts of THIS ENTIRE THING, from the story.

Other than "we know better than you nerds and this is what we want to do and shut up."

Having said that, the most interesting thing to me is...why did they blink? Why bother adding in "Oroku Saki"ish at the last second and bother going to all the trouble? They clearly didn't care about fans or source material given Megan O'Fox was the holy center of this universe, the story being about her and her journey to apparently not being a reporter anymore(didn't use any footage, didn't get her job back), no Hamato Yoshi(past or present life).

So why, of all things, change that and only that and...do a really poor job of it?

Really fascinating to me.

Watch April, since she's no longer a reporter, finagle a job as a lab technician somehow in the sequel, since she sometimes is in the other media. Just so they can continue to make half-assed attempts at covering all the bases.

I mean, her Dad was a scientist so by this movie's logic she should just have magically learned Science stuff by osmosis. So, no explanation needed, she'll just be a lab tech in part two instead of a reporter. See? They thought of it already. They're Sharp, don'tcha know.

Case in point of Them being "Sharp".

Why is it I have no doubts it could very well happen... *sigh* And it would be another one of those things that could be explained in one line (I dunno, like science was her minor in college) but the writing again won't be smart enough to ever cover that.

((Super-Dramatic "Dawson's Creek"-Style Voice-Over Narration From The First Sequel Teaser Trailer:))"I wanted to continue my father's research. But more importantly... I wanted to know... Why? Why Ninjas...? Why... Turtles? And maybe most of all... (Needle scratch sound effect) What's with all the PIZZA?"
((Cut to close-up shot of Mikey shoving a gigantic slice down his face-hole, then burping out loud while Master Splinter looks on and sighs, bemused))

You're right. I've never actually tried writing down a series of words that add up to a second-grader's half-assed first draft before, but it is pretty easy. I'm amazed everyone doesn't do it. You know "50 Shades of Grey" was originally awful "Twilight" fan-fiction? Apparently the best way to make money writing is to be terrible at actually writing anything.

That B roll video. Whoa... (in a Mikey way "whoa"). They did just totally bin a LOAD of scenes and did a big re-write.

One the most interesting threads I've read lately! Thanks!

Yeah, It looks like a lot of stuff was cut, even the ending. The B-Roll shows a scene of April talking on Camera saying. "They were born in the shadow, They live in the shadow, And they fight in the shadow, They always will." I take it this scene was probably the very end of the movie. Hopefully the Bluray will have delete scenes on them.

I'm really fascinated by how Bay and Liebesman essentially created two different films about the turtles. I'd really be interested in a Director's Cut that just gave us the film as it was originally meant to be. Would it be better? Worse? God, we could debate it for years.

Even if the deleted scenes were released, someone could make a fanedit and "recreate" the original film... but, to protect what little respect they have left in the TMNT community (if any), I doubt that Liebesman and Bay will be releasing any significant deleted scenes.

As suggested in that interview linked in another thread, "dialogue is expensive." Well yeah, when you waste money shooting it just to throw a lot on the cutting room floor...

Please let them release any good stuff we didn't get to see. If they don't at least release the full elevator scene uncut (be it on DVD/Blu-ray or simply uploaded on line), they have no heart... (Granted Bay's was probably already eaten by Cthulhu.)

Unless he meant the Dialogue for the motion capture being expensive itself.

Even if they had deleted scenes with the Turtles, Chances are, It'll be scenes with the actors in the mo-cap suits minus the CGI.

I hate seeing deleted scenes with unfinished or no CGI.

I'm sure some of it undoubtedly is. But then that just leads me to question taking on a movie if you're not fully prepared to be able to afford to do what you need to do for it.

If you cut down enough on the Turtles time because it's expensive, well then you're no longer quite telling a Turtles story. And end up being April and Friends. Wait.

Even though there's probably a good reason those scenes were cut, I would indeed want to watch them.

There must be two types of deleted scenes: those which were cut because they no longer fitted with the plot (which I doubt we'll ever see); and those which were cut late on to accommodate the 100 minute run time. Some of those scenes might be at least partially rendered so I'd hope we would get a chance to see them.

Having said that, I got the impression from Liebesman's defensive tone in that interview posted in the 'writing perspective' thread that we wouldn't be getting anything in the way of deleted scenes.

I wonder how Sacks would have been as Shredder?
