View Full Version : What incarnation of the TMNT would your dream movie be based on?

With all the different incarnations of the turtles, people have different preferences as to their favorite turtles. I'm wondering, if given a choice, what would you guys have your dream TMNT movie based upon?

Comics? Cartoons? Movies? Games? Which ones of those? Some mix of the group?

My strongest childhood memories of the TMNT were from the first movie, so that strongly influenced my personal taste of the turtles. But, despite having gotten into it pretty late...I'd love to see an adaptation of Mirage's TMNT comic.

Specifically the Eastman and Laird issues of Volume 1. You could divide it up into several movies (perhaps a tv special or two to get some characters/stories done without an odd insert in an otherwise serious set of issues).

Maybe the first movie could be the first three issues of the comic and the Raphael one-shot. It's as good a place as any to start.

What about you guys? What would you love to see adapted in movie form?

Sorry, I ran out of poll options, so I couldn't add one for everything I thought I should. Feel free to point out your vote if "Other".

I'm going to go with IDW because they've done such a good job of mixing in aspects of all the different versions through the years while keeping a good balance of serious and fun.

Particularly like how Bebop and Rocksteady, while still pretty dimwitted, are legit dangers. The hired muscle aimed where Shredder/Karai direct them.

But I've said before, I would be bouncing in my seat giddy as could be if I ever got to see on film Leonardo's one-shot where Shredder returns and Leo's up against the whole Foot clan on Christmas Eve leading back to the antique store. Granted, that would largely be the same plot as the first movie following the comics more closely, but that issue is what sold me on Leo being more than just the straight man, but a legitimate bad ass in his own right.

I am going to have to go with the Forgotten 4Kids Turtles. They are the best hands down.

Said it once twice then I've said it ten times by now. But I'm too lazy to look up the actual post so. IDW but I would take Issue 5 and combine it with SHOTFC. while the 2nd movie is Stockman and Krang.

Ok, a live action Turtles forever would be amazing, but kind of hard to pull off properly.

I'm not ashamed to say that if a live action version of the 2012 cartoon came out...I would piss myself with joy. Just, piss everywhere.

So far we seem to have an interesting mix of movie ideas. I do wonder what would be done for the ratings of the movies.

What would your movie be rated? G? PG? PG13? R? Or would it be something that pushes the boundaries?

I'd go for a hard-PG-13 to get most of the content in without pushing it to R and risking financial backing/rage from Viacom. Would allow for a wider audience to view it as well.

Either 2k3 or the IDW comic.

I had to go with Mirage (still pining for the darker reboot), but I could easily get behind a 2k12 movie. I'm kind of bummed that the 2014 movie is making bank, because I feel like the Nicktoon has gained in popularity enough now that the option could have been on the table. :ohwell:

I'd love a DTV adaptation of Mirage 1.1, stylized in black and white with red for bandannas and blood.....but that's never gonna happen.

Definitely could get behind this.

This would be awesome and hilarious to see.

The Mirage, Fred Wolf, and 2k3 cartoons done in sort of Who Framed Roger Rabbit style alongside the new CG and the 1990 suits. :D

Ideally, I'd prefer IDW with some Nick influence. It would give me the same greatness of seeing this movie much like Mirage with Fred Wolf influence delivered for the original movie, and I'd wish future Bay sequels would get some influences here. I don't know why I would want it to be based off of existing movies since it would basically be a straight remake that wouldn't find much new under the shell. 4kids sort of had Turtles Forever itself, though I voted for Turtles Forever since its basically a concept of reshowing numerous popular incarnations, and an enhanced version would allow for a longer movie and a mixture of 2D (B&W and color), 3D (different animation styles to distinguish Nick and Bay for example), and live action, a concept that really would be cool to see.

Definitely the darkness of Mirage when it comes to combat scenes. The designs of the 1990 movie and the humor of the Fred Wolf show during downtime.

Oooh I'd love to see "Sons of the Silent Age", "The River", or "City at War" made into a movie. It could be 2-d Duo-tone style animation, or CGI. Heck, if there was an effort to get the production team from "Where the Wild Things Are" to do the motion capture/puppetry it could totally be Dudes in Suits.

Jasika Nicole would be April.
With the 2k12 VA actors.

Ooh, good question!

At its core, Mirage. Play out the Yoshi/Saki backstory to give emotional weight to everything. Maybe make Yoshi and Splinter the same character to simplify that, and then let the basic Mirage plot play out with some aspects of 4Kids and IDW peppered in - Karai as the Foot's second-in-command with a conflicted sense of honour like in 4Kids, Baxter as a schemer working for TCRI, connecting him to the ooze, and April as an intern a la IDW, and Casey meets a runaway Raph like in the Mirage comics and the 1990 movie.

The second movie could have Baxter as the lead villain, trying to kill April after she discovers his true nature, which of course draws the Turtles into it. It'd also reveal the truth about TCRI and the Turtles' origins (whoo Utroms!).

The third/final movie would be City at War. The Turtles and Karai are forced into a truce to bring order to the city after the Shredder's death leaves a power vacuum in the NYC underworld. Sticking really close to the Mirage original. Tackle the whole "cycle of vengeance" theme in a really thoughtful and action-packed way.

That's how I'd do it.

A movie based on the Nick cartoon, with a little bit of Mirage thrown in, would be awesome.

Nick series.

Live action could get a little bit darker than the cartoon.

One of the main reasons would be the shredder/splinter rivalry with the Karai twist. That would make an epic plot in a film.

It still amazes me how many incarnations the turtles have had. When 15 poll options aren't enough to cover your varied interpretations of characters, you know a franchise is well off.

I wonder how each type of movie would be received by fans, from the most serious Mirage adaptation, to a movie focused on the sillier aspects of the Fred Wolf cartoon...to any TMNT movie crossing over with Power Rangers.

I wonder what movies the viewing audience would gravitate to more.

I would do what they tried to do in the new movie and mix the origins but stick closer to the mirage rather than the IDW. I would probably have Yoshi on the run from saki in New York where he hides in the sewer and meets Splinter as just a sewer rat and adopts him as a pet. Splinter is hiding four turtles but they are babies. Then splinter mutates, and Yoshi teaches him ninjutsu. A year passes. (So splinter can learn but also to grow the bond between he and Yoshi) Then the Shredder finds Yoshi in the sewer and kills him and we get our first splinter/ shredder fight. Splinter can't beat him so he runs and hides and Shredder leaves. Then Splinter raises the turtles and teaches them ninjutsu. I would then have the Shredder team up with TCRI (not Sacks industries) to figure out the mutagen that transformed Splinter so he can create his own mutants. Splinter and the turtles were mutated in the lab like in IDW but then escaped into the sewers.

A mix of ot stuff and new stuff is good enough for me, with the ot stuff that I like, I would just want small changes here and there. Ya know? More wit and badassness when it comes to the characters from it. I want bebop and rocksteady to be bigger than the turtles and in good shape, I would prefer it if bebop's mohawk was bigger.

I think that's the worst possible idea and least creative. It's like... looking for "creative" ways to mix and match stuff that's already been created, rather than actually doing something creative.

Like, "Oooooh, I wonder what the next origin of Bebop and Rocksteady will be in this new TMNT universe! I wonder how much they'll borrow from their origins in the cartoon and in IDW!" instead of, you know, actually going down a new path.

And yet in spite of this the 1990 Live Action movie is still the best treatment these characters have gotten on film.

My dream film franchise would be an Ultimate styled telling like IDW is doing, but not exactly their Ultimate universe telling. I have had some thoughts about putting pen to paper and doing a long form telling of my definitive turtles story, but I'm going to be far too busy for the foreseeable future.

Film 1
Splinter knows the Shredder of the Foot Clan murdered his master Yoshi, but he doesn't know where to find him. That'll be the thread that allows the film to tie seemingly unrelated events together. The turtles would be younger and more inexperienced and that'll allow the film to end without a confrontation with the Shredder. The breakthrough in finding the Shredder would come in a telling of "The Passing" where the ninja that attempt to assassinate Hattori and his father are Foot ninja. With the help of Hattori, they find that the Purple Dragons are a street level outfit of the Foot, and they would be the best way to track down the Foot's HQ. Eventually, they're drawn into the climactic battle against members of the Purple Dragons including Bebop and Rocksteady as humans. Hun would be the direct contact to Shredder, but I don't think I would include him in the battle because of that. I could include Xever, although I'd never turn hin to Fishface down the line. The end of the film has Splinter tells the turtles what they've been training for, but they still have much to do/learn before they can avenge master Yoshi. Post credt scene could be young intern April O'Neil be shown around Stockman Enterprises facility by Baxter, and she's finally shown the Mousers to end the scene.

A few other threads I'd carry over that aren't described here are Splinter before becoming Yoshi's pet and a mysterious man who happens to catch the turtles actions above ground.

Film 2
The turtles are tasked with gathering intel, and possibly frustrating any Foot/Purple Dragon activities along the way. On one these missions they run into April fleeing a Mouser attack. The turtles get dragged into that conflict. After Stockman and the Mousers are taken care of, Splinter finally deems the turtles ready to challenge the Shredder. The fight plays out like Mirage #1 except the turtles flee before confirming the Shredder is dead because a grende going off would attract attention rather quickly. Would like to show some of the Foot hierarchy, and some more layers to the Shredder and the years after Yoshi's death. Have the Shredder command his empire through the likes of Tatsu, Khan, Bradford, Hun, Karai, and Pimiko whether or not they ever actually engage the turtles throughout the film. Tatsu, Khan, Bradford, and Hun would essentially be his generals in NYC while Karai, his adopted daughter, is working her way up the home branch of the Foot Clan to usurp it for the Shredder. Pimiko, his biological daughter, would still a teenager in training, but lay some of the groundwork for her rivalry with Karai. None of this needs to be focused on heavily to add the layers to the Shredder, and it lays the groundwork for a CAW film down the line. The post credit scene would be the mysterious man approaches a dying Shredder with a propostion. He'll save his life and grant him the power toexact revenge in exchange for the Foot's manpower and resources in hunting down his enemies.

Film 3
I'm not sure where I'd take the third film, but it's too soon to jump into Exile/Return to New York as some of things I'd like to folloup or tie up need the Utroms. I know I'd like to introduce Casey Jones, and don't think I could do it with a Turtles in Space/Dimension X film. I could tie up the Splinter backstory with a Rat King film, but I don't know if that would fit quite yet either. I think Rat King would be abetter fit for an Exile/Return to New York as the minor villain like Stockman and the Mousers.

Anways, that's what I've got right now, and I'd still need at least 3 films to conclude the entire thing.

A live action trilogy based on Mirage volume 1. I guess you can argue that the original film is heavily based on Mirage, but think of it as Burton's Batman film as compared to Nolan's - the former is quite dark with moments of comedy, but the latter just treats the source material very seriously and attempts to tell a compelling story that stands on its own as not just a great superhero film (or set of films), but as great movies generally.

So I'd like to see a trilogy of the first three films with an 18 certificate. It would be fine to do this because the majority of viewers wouldn't be familiar with Mirage anyway, and it would reel in lots of new fans. First film would explore the turtles' and Shredder's origins, and would culminate with Return to New York. Second film would rearrange things and would be about their trip to Dhoonib and the Triceraton Republic. At first glance this looks out of place, but the film would begin with an exploration of TCRI so it would tie into place with the trilogy as a whole. Plus, the middle film of a trio tends to deviate slightly anyway. The final film would see the turtles back home and would be a City at War movie - it would all be about the Foot seeking revenge for Leo beheading Shredder, and everything that happens in that arc. The arc could be done more justice than it was in 4kids, for obvious reasons (more time and more license for mature material). The film would climax with the turtles and the Foot's truce and New York entering an epoch of relative tranquility. You can argue that it might be possible to go further than this with future films, but I think that would be a nice note to finish on.

Of course, as I say all the time, I'd far rather that all of the above was done on television, but this topic and section is about a hypothetical movie or set of movies.

Mirage! It would be really cool to have a realistic TMNT movie with blood and gore. I think we could incorporate some jokes with Mike, and MAYBE Raphael. Mirage with a hint of '87 turtles! Shredder would be a total bad-ass, and the origin would be the same, maybe a little tweaking. Who's with me?! :tgrin:

I've had so many different ideas for films, but for what would be the most accessible, I would love a trilogy of TMNT films adapting the main story beats from Mirage Volume 1.

#1. Initial fight with Shredder) + Casey Jones + Return to New York (basically the 1990 film with modern CGI, so it would need some original material included that hadn't been adapted yet)
#2. Baxter Stockman + Utroms / TCRI + Leatherhead + Krang
#3. I, Monster + City at War

Am I allowed to say none/most? At least where the Turtles are concerned. Ultimately I think I'd rather a movie be based on their predominate personality, traits, quirks and problems brought by multiple sources and the depth of personality that brings with it.

For a second, I thought you meant "None", as in, "no more TMNT movies". That's where I am now, personally.

Pretty much for the same reason none of those choices would ever happen. Hollywood would never do a "straight" adaptation of any of them, anyway, and when they try to do a "mix", they pretty much take the worst parts of each one. So, since any future movies will likely suck unless produced as an independent, non-Hollywood film, my official position is "No More TMNT Movies." Took a lot to push me there, but oh, man, am I there. Literally Zero Hope for this franchise at all as long as it continues to exist solely as a corporate entity.

If I had to give a real answer, I'd probably most prefer to see the original 1990 film get a "real" sequel. That's pretty much TMNT as I see it inside my head.

well I loved tmnt 2014 movie. the shredder suit kinda looks like 2003 shredder. the foot kinda look like a mix between 1987 and 2003 series and they had guns like in the 1987 series. it uses the test subject origin story just like in the idw comic. so I am happy with the tmnt films now. cant wait for tmnt 2 2016.

Isn't that already what the Nick series does (overtly so), except it borrows more from the OT? :ohwell:

...But as for answering the original question, I think the OT should have had a proper finale rather than literally finishing everything in the last minute of the series. But as for a new movie incorporating different TMNT elements, no thanks. We've already seen an excessive amount of that in the Nick series (aka "TMNT tribute" series). Plus I'm not too eager, or excited for that matter, for Hollywood to make anymore TMNT movies (similar to what Leo656 said above) since they haven't made a spot-on tone and characterization I enthusiastically liked since the 1990 movie.

Since the poll is multiple choice, I voted for Mirage, the 1990 film, Archie's TMNT Adventures, the 2003 cartoon, Turtles Forever, the 2007 film, IDW, and the Nicktoon.

I'd actually rather talk about the ones I DIDN'T vote for and why I didn't vote for.

The Fred Wolf cartoon, I once considered the definitive version of Turtles as a kid, but that was before the 2003 series started and before I started to delve into the Mirage comics. Personally, I feel that Fred Wolf cartoon, especially as it went on, is the least like most of the other incarnations of the franchise, so I take issue with its popularity and influence over TMNT in the mainstream. I think much of the good stuff from the series was in the first season, and that was incorporated into the more interesting (and more Mirage-esque) TMNT Adventures continuity. There was some interesting in Fred Wolf that wasn't in Adventures, most notably IMHO Baxterfly. SO I would actually like two different series of TMNT films, one serious series based on Mirage with elements added from the 1990 and 2007 films, the 2003 cartoon, and IDW; and one more light-hearted series based on TMNT Adventures with elements added from Fred Wolf and the Nicktoon.

TMNT II and III? I can't think of anything from TMNT III that I would like to see used again, frankly that movie should have been more like the Renet/Savanti Romero Mirage stories. From TMNT II, I guess Tokka and Rahzar were cool (though I frankly prefer Eastman's designs for them above all else), but everything else was rather cheesy.

When it comes to Next Mutation, I kinda liked Venus and to a lesser extent, the Dragons. Pretty much all the other villains were just cheesy, though I never saw the "Unchain My Heart" storyarc. I'd be open to Venus being used again as a supporting character, but she has such a negative reputation that I doubt that will ever happen.

The Dreamwave comics got cancelled way too early to establish their own identity, and from I've heard about them, what little they had that wasn't based on the 2003 cartoon was better left forgotten.

The Superman Legend OVA is just weird. I'd like to see them work out a deal to make the OVA and the various TMNT manga imported to Western shores and officially translated into English, but I don't think they should do anything else with their concepts and original characters. Though, if they gave Japanese creators a chance to do new TMNT manga, that could be interesting.

I didn't like anything the 2014 movie brought to the mythology. Taking out Yoshi, and not even making Splinter Japanese is borderline insulting to the franchise. Pretty much the only thing I liked from that movie was a few funny bits between April and Vernon and the 4 Turtles.

Also, I voted for Turtles Forever, but I'm not entirely sure how you could make a theatrical film out of it without confusing most moviegoers.

I know everyone else wants a movie based on Mirage, but...I'd actually prefer a story based on IDW. I love those comics, and they are my favorite version of TMNT created thus far. I've finally accepted, after re-reading every major story arc three times each, that I'll never 'get' the Mirage comics.
