View Full Version : *sigh* why is everyone chanting 'reboot reboot reboot'?

Could I please ask you all something? Just because the movie had it's issues, doesn't mean it's not salvagable. In the sequel, just introduce the IDW reincarntaion angle (Splinter was telling a half-truth about the martial arts book), reveal Sach's birth name from his father on the American base to be' Baxter Stockman' (the cameo where Freeman's character is not named can be ignored), tweak the turtles design between movies, lose the extra junk they are wearing, and change a few actors, and you're ready to go with a sequel that has Shredder use that glob of mutagen that was left on his mechanical suit to create Rocksteady and Bebop, and to bring in Casey Jones.

I really, really DO NOT want to sit through another origin again, when a few lines of dialouge at the start of part two,and some production tweaks, gives us a good starting point. That way, people who hate the first one can just pretend it never existed.

they could pull a Incredible Hulk with a sequel. Events in the first film kinda happened, but they never dwell on the details.

Who's shouting reboot? Most people here seemed to like the movie, last time I checked the poll thread 57% said they loved it

Yup, its mostly 2 or 3 people who seem to do most of the complaining about it. Oh well, negative opinions are good in the sense that they prevent reddit-style circlejerking

Because it's being produced by the same people. And in my mind, they already effed up the origins. It would take a lot to convince me they can make a decent sequel after how badly they executed the first film.

Fair Enough, although the next one's production won't be plagued with alien turtles, blue door script, and last minute Harry Sachs white man shredder switcheroo. They'll be going in with the intro established- and frankly, I don't wanna sit theough another intro. :(

The movie is a success. Bay is back, and so are the Blue Door writers. I'm gonna guess, after all the rewrites and reshoots, that they were finished tweaking the story. But you can, at least, expect the turtles' designs to change. And by that, I just mean different clothes. Because toys.

I was just giving those who dislike it a best-case senario for thier wants. And I DO think the Yoshi Reincarnation angle is likely to be introduced for the next film. Legend of the Yoaki, and the story about the alchemist and the evil warlord Sachs recounts in the film, set it up perfectly.

As cool as the Yokai story was, it just wasn't in the movie. The Yokai story doesn't refer to the poison or the alchemist, and Sack's story doesn't reference turtle warriors.

I doubt the Yokai story had really anything to do with the movie besides as a promotional animated short. maybe it'll pop up in a director's cut where Splinter tells the story as a good night story to the turtles as kids.

Which will happen eventually. It's inevitable. Everything gets rebooted. We may have to wait a long time, but I'm cool with that. In the meantime I've got the Nick show and the IDW comics and I'm happy with them.

Those little lines aren't going to alleviate the other issues within the first film that are 100% going to show up in the sequel, though. The way they break their own internal logic at every freakin' turn to get from one set piece to another isn't going to change. That's the greatest crime of the first film.

Nope, but both stories mention the warlord, who commanded the yokai, poisioned the water, and terrorized the people. Sorry, not lettign this one go, with all the other stuff they borrowed from IDW, this wouldn't surprpise me if Splinter was Yoshi here, too.

And my point about the reboot is; I may have personally liked the movie, but reboot or no I DON'T WANT ANOTHER ORIGIN! Just start whatever comes next with the turtles and shredder already at war, and April already knowing the turtles. Even a reboot could start the story alreay in progress, right? Is no retelling of the origin something both sides can agree on?

Basically this. I can't be confident that they'll even attempt to right the wrongs of this movie. I don't think they care, because it did well.

I'd rather have a reboot because I'm not confident that the creative team behind this schlock can do a better sequel. I mean, personally speaking, there was just so much bad here that I do find it unsalvageable.

And there doesn't have to be another origin. They can take any number of perfectly good origin stories that already exist and adapt them. Preferably in a short, flashback scene without spending too much time with it. Or, not at all--who doesn't know the turtles' origin by now? I just don't get why we keep getting stories about rich businessmen and plots that revolve around boring bit characters when there is literally tons of dimension-hopping, alien-fighting, badass sci-fi stories right there in the damn source material. :ohwell:

IMO, I think a sequel done properly can save this property. This movie was fun and entertaining but it was a mess of a plot, and as a huge fan, it sucks to have to admit that. They're beyond lucky it made the kind of money it did this wknd.. matter of fact I'm sure that's why they waited to announce a sequel.

With all that being said, I really don't think a reboot is what's needed at this point. I feel like if they take their time and write a GREAT script for the 2nd movie, they can set up a solid trilogy.

Considering they've rehired the same writers and producers that made all the wonky decisions for the first one, and the movie's set to be released in less than two years... I wouldn't be too confident about a great script, personally. Odds are they're just gonna pump out the same kind of thing again as quickly as possible and cash in.

Fans are usually pretty satisfied with good movies, actually. They may nitpick them a bit, but you don't usually see this kind of fierce negativity toward something like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers or The Dark Knight.

This. And apply the "Law Of Diminishing Returns" as far as sequels in general go - there have been, like, three sequels ever made in the entire history of movies that were as good as the originals - and whether people liked this movie or didn't like it, the odds of the next one being "better" are slim to none. It won't be. It almost can't be. Movies don't work that way.

cus fans are never ****ing satisfied with anythingI've seen fans satisfied by a lot of films myself quite a few in recent memory too. This particular one was a mess though and I don't expect anything better out of the same creative team so I'm not suprised there are people who want to throw it out and start over. I'm right there with them

Even if we got no sequel, could we at least have another story besides the origin? Pick up later in the turtles career, bring in Baxter, Rocksteady and Bebop, maybe Casey Jones?

Definitely Casey Jones. I was disappointed he wasn't being cast in this movie. I think they should just take off where the 2007 movie left off. They alluded to the Shredder coming back, the turtles were already established ... you could go anywhere from there.

pannoni1
08-11-2014, 03:24 PM
Of course Casey Jones would really help out given how much screen time April got since we've never had a long romantic relationship in any movie. Obviously, a reboot is a no-no at this point given that its almost unheard of for a remake of a franchise to appear just two years later. Some Nick kids will be old enough for the sequel in just a couple of years and they will start to understand the differences between the TV show and the movie like the original fans did between the OT and the movies. Importantly, give the Turtles more time to know themselves in this sequel, while keeping it interesting with different mutants, some familiar and some new ones.

Debated if I was going to reply to any of these, and after seeing all the negativity, decided to wade in and present a counter argument.

I've noticed that most of the pro film fans seem to be either late teens-early 20s 2nd gen fans or others who support the brand/IP with passion goggles no matter what. Either way I've been hearing an awful lot of this "You're not a TMNT fan or 'true' fan unless you see the movie" "Just go and see it regardless" and finally "You can't have an opinion unless you see it and judge it on your own" Regardless, there's seems to be a lot of hate and vitriol thrown to those who didn't like it/won't support it or see it on principle and it's ridiculous.

So to the previous mentioned camp above, here's my counter point. Take it or leave it.

But first, a little back story.

I was born in the 80s, grew up and fell in love with the Turtles and have been around for every incarnation. Some I've liked, some I haven't, that doesn't take away that I've been a proud fan for over twenty five years and that doesn't make me a bigger fan because of it. We can all be "the biggest fan" of the the property.

With regards to this movie. I personally chose not to see it. I waited until the end of the weekend to gauge both reviews and consensus and then made my decision. I personally feel that this is more "Michael Bay Presents: TMNT" more then anything. Being aware of his resume, I know what I'm getting into, without the need to look at a review or judge it for myself.

Now with anything, there's always both sides of the spectrum. When a movie like this makes money, it sends a clear message to the studio, the director, etc that like Oliver Twist, the public wants more and they will pay for it. It's foolish to think that the sequel will be better, because if this movie is successful, future sequels will be the same. Because they feel they can get away with again. After all, we payed for it, some, four or more times.

Personally, I won't support it. But I feel just as it's your right to enjoy it, it's mine to feel how I do without being told "I'm not a fan" "Or my opinion is invalid" because I decided to save fifteen dollars on better things.

People will like this incarnation and others won't. Like its always been. No one's right or wrong. It's just an opinion.

I'm sure there will be a reboot in maybe 10 to 15 years. But This will be a trilogy. Whether some people like it or not. What they did worked. A lot of people enjoyed this movie.
I think most of the kinks were ironed out during this first film. A lot of things were cut out as well. I'm sure they learned a lot. I think the second one will be better. They will listen to the fans.. and the problems this film had will most likely be corrected. A bigger budget.. Add Bebop and Rocksteady... Casey Jones, and I think the second film will make even more money. If this weird release date schedule ends up not helping the movie then they will probably do something that makes more sense. A world wide release. But make no mistake about it. We got a trilogy on the way. They will probably tweak the designs/ clothing a little bit. Uh.. cannot wait. Maybe Dimension X in TMNT 3!

Let the build up to TMNT 2 begin!!!

Edit: The sequel WILL be better. Just wait and see :D

Its not gonna happen. But there is no reason why a sequel cannot be better. Sure they MAJORLY screwed up the origin story but the core rivalry is set(no matter how weak) Now all they need to do is bring in some better writers and slightly tweak the look of the turtles, slim them down and make them a bit softer.

Exactly. Even though they did a poor job getting there, the core rivalry that has driven the franchise is set.

The next film should be about revenge. I say fast forward 3-5 years, the turtles have been fighting petty crime in the city and the Shredder has been biding his time, and experimenting with his own mutants with Baxter Stockman. Casey Jones as a love interest 4 April/ ally, A few volatile smash and destroy (easy to explain the origin) mutants like Slash, LeatherHead, Maybe Dogpound/Rahzar or Newtralizer from the new series and then intro/set the stage for Krang/ Dimension X.

I personally don't think a reboot is needed, despite hating the movie. They could change the turtles' designs as well as Splinter, even recast April. I can totally get past the stupid "ninja handbook" thing because once you get past the origin story it will never come up again. There's nothing this movie got so horribly wrong that it's beyond fixing in a sequel. Now, being that we're getting the same time for the sequel, I would be extremely surprised if they suddenly started making good decisions, but it's not impossible. Certainly nothing that makes a reboot necessary.

If the sequel is actually... good... this would be one of the few times that I would skip part 1 and only buy the sequel. But still... this turned out to be a bigger TMNT Evolution mess than I thought. I really don't see what of all can be done to fix this in a sequel just like what they could have done to make a good DB Evolution sequel that fixed everything in the first one.

Like I said in the sequel thread... Scooby Doo 2. I ****ing hated the first Scooby Doo movie. It did nothing but take a piss on my love for Scooby Doo. But the sequel? I absolutely love it. Sure, they didn't recast Fred. Sure, they kept Daphne a martial arts expert. Sure, there was an extremely brief stoner joke concerning Shaggy, but still. It wasn't perfect, but it hit enough of the right chords with me that I was completely satisfied.

I don't expect it to happen with TMNT 2, but it is within the realm of possibility.

I did that, with TDK. I hated BB, so freaking boring, and I actually really don't care for Bale as Batman, I only liked The Joker or Catwoman, which is why I like the other 2 movies, while I could care less about Batman Begins.

This is not the first time either. I love Aliens. Hated all of the others including the first. It's just not my cup of tea.

And as for how could they fix the stuff in the sequel, if Bryan Singer can find a way to erase that god awful X3, and still keep the main continuity, then I see no reason why we can't get the same thing for this movie. Because for all of it's faults, I do like the actors we got for the Turtles. I wouldn't mind maybe giving Pete Ploszek a shot at Leo, but if they still use Knoxville, I'm cool with that, but still, it would be nice to see the same actors being used, just get a better story, and make it actually about the Turtles. They should have more lines and scenes than April.

Also, I have to ask, why are the movie lovers so concerned about those who don't love the movie? Why does it bother you all so much? Instead of worrying about us "haters" why not get together with your friends and talk about how perfect and how this new movie is such a gift for you.

As with any franchise, there will always be a mix of fans that liked the movie and the fans that don't. My friend and I have been TMNT enthusiasts since the 80's and usually have differences in opinion when it comes to what we like. That being said we both enjoyed the 2014 movie.

Me personally, I don't think a reboot is necessary. While there were some plot issues, I don't think the movie was offensive in any way. The Turtles were funny, charismatic, and after seeing them in motion, not too bad looking either. The theater was packed with adults and children of all ages. Everyone seemed to have a good time, cheering at the Turtles and getting involved with the action. Like the Transformers movies, it is impossible to please everyone. But at least the momentum will keep the franchise going so that future movies will be possible.
