TMNT is cooler than MOTU

Thought this would be a good spot to post any concept art from the movie that was found. Personally, i love seeing the "what could've been" aspects of movies.

While not super-different from what we ended up with onscreen, I think these designs are much more palatable. The faces are much more reminiscent of the classic design and they athletic and intimidating without being over-the-top Hulks with shells.

Not crazy about Leo's beak/eyes, but otherwise I actually dig these.

I definitely liked Leo with the sandals more than full boots.

Cool post! I noticed that the Raph concept in the Visual Guide was dated around the same time as the Blue Door script. It seems like the basic design of the turtles didn't deviate much since then.

Has there been any word on an "art of" book for the new movie?

the used designs have definitely grown on me, but i do like the leaner, more slender looks. even with all the accesories and extra crap.

and yeah...that shredder is facepalmingly stupid. like, really...there IS something worse than the armor design used on film.

Uh. Well. o.O

I suppose those who want a more animal-like TMNT might go for that a little more. If they also like them looking like aliens.

Annnd... just like that, as if by some strange movie magic, the guys we ended up with are a heck of a lot cuter by comparison.

Edit: Those feet... did they accidentally start looking at deer feet?

Jeez, how can there be pitch designs that looks worse then what we got. They barely look like humanoid turtles, and more like creatures kinda resembling turtles...

There's some interesting ideas in the 2D art with their heads, but the Zbrush images completely no sell it. Their proportions are weird, and they aren't't very "turtle semi-realism" with those torsos.

The designs we have now aren't pleasant to look at.

I'd give these designs credit for actually taking a genuine risk of doing something truly different even though it's not to my taste rather than awkwardly trying to create cute turtles which still look huge and badass and dressed in gear designed to sell toys.

Obviously from back when they were going to be aliens. Those are interesting designs but would have been a huge mistake for a TMNT movie. Eh, in general I don't feel like they need to go so crazy with the 'realistic' approach. Why can't they just look like the Ninja Turtles?

Look at that, we kind of agree!

They still look too much like tortoises rather than turtles in the face, and not into the ultra high nose, the odd feet and body proportions, but ultimately, yes to more turtle less human.

@ Jester - I'm also not a fan of the High Shell.

And YES to no trace of Shrek, or the Actors faces.

The gun thing, and the clothes, need to go far, far, far away. Why do the artists keep thinking the turtles need to be more "bad-ass". The words "bad" and "ass" have lost all meaning.

Bad ass isn't shooting someone with a gun; it's attacking them with gardening tools, and winning.

These are inexcusable....I would like to know more of a backstory on the images. Was this just a design someone submitted based off an early outline of the script, or were these legitimately considered?!

Would it kill these movie productions to hire a group of both fans and normal movie goers to run ideas past? They could sign a non disclosure agreement so the info doesn't get leaked. I just think these studios could better appeal to fans if they asked some fans what they would like or want to see. This goes for all adaptations of comics and books.

This is concept art. When artists let their creative juices flow. This was obviously for the rejected alien concept script, where the "turtles" actually just vaguely resemble earth bound turtles. With a little bit of work, I don't think this looks half bad. My only main concerns are that the limbs don't have enough muscle and the shell is way too big and spiky, but otherwise, I actually kinda like this. Slap on a bandana, belt, and all the necessary arm and leg equipment, and those things I mentioned are really the only things I'd say would need to be fixed.

But, I could be in the minority for actually wanting realistic looking TMNT. Though I could say it's a look better suited for something closer to the tone of the original comics than any of the cartoons. :P

Candy Kappa
08-24-2014, 04:01 AM
Personally I don't find them as a very realistic take on a humanoid turtle, the limbs are too thin and lanky, the legs are more lizard then turtle. The torso is the atypical heroic beefcake triangle body, which don't encompass the look of a Turtle, no plastron, the shell is all wrong. Only the head looks turtle-esque, but a full-on beak is too subtle for the general movie goer.

Bry

Doomed from the very beginning.

It's really just more evidence that they went into this project dead set on to "fixing" a design that didn't need fixing. Even though these designs were rejected, they were based on what the project was asking for on some level. Like, at no point did they consider making the Ninja Turtles just look like the Ninja Turtles? Apparently not. Yeesh.

see to all the whiners it could have been much much worse

Yeah, but "could have been worse" doesn't make what we got "good".

"You could be eating elephant feces for dinner, so smile and enjoy your horse crap, you whiner!" :twink:

The thing is, they can't just appeal to fans, they have to appeal to a general audience as well. Appealing to just fans of certain versions of whatever is just limiting. To be fair it is pretty tough and tricky to balance.

I don't really think it's that tricky. The public is familiar with the Ninja Turtles and know what they look like. They like them. You can make them more "realistic", but it's stilly to go too far or alter them too much. Absolutely nobody would have complained if the movie gave us a more "classic" look for the Turtles. Hell, it probably would have gone over a lot better.

If these guys listened to everything the fans suggested, the movie might have ended up being even worse.

Hell, the outcry about white Shredder meant the movie being further destroyed in reshoots and editing.

It's pretty obvious that was going to be a mess regardless. Even if you took out the Japanese Shredder, Sacks was a paper-thin character whose plot and motivation made no sense.

I wasn't talking about these designs in particular (in fact, a few posts earlier I said how I would prefer if the Ninja Turtles would just simply look like the Ninja Turtles). I was referring to someone who asked why the studios just don't hire fans to help with comic book movies in general and the fact still remains that it's not always in the film's best interest to cater so much to the fans when you have to literally try to please a bigger audience as well.

Donaterro

I can't believe people are actually backing these designs up.

Look, if they wanted to make a movie about reptiles from space invading or whatever, then just do that, but don't completely change this franchise to the point where it's non-recognizable.

They could've tried these ideas without paying for the TMNT rights in the first place.

When I first saw them in the 2014 trailer, I blurted out, "My childhood is ruined."

But, guess what, I enjoyed the new movie. Past their face appearances, I appreciate their height differences. Mikey is the "youngest", so I like him being the little one. :P Plus, Raph's huge! :o Talk about muscles. Yeah!

Oh yeah, I'm not advocating for only listening to fans (though in fairness, a lot of today's pros started as fans of the properties they work on), but if a franchise has been around and popular for decades, going into it with a "how can we fix this?" kind of attitude is pretty idiotic. By all means try to make it the best, most accessible version you can, but if you're trying to completely alter it on a conceptual or basic design level, your head is not in the right place. And that's exactly where they came from when they started developing this thing. That was their first instinct.

I'd like to know as well. I've said over and over again my reasons for wanting "realism", but if you're not going that direction, and you didn't do Henson, is there anotther version that you would accept in live action, or are most of you just "nit picking" elements.

I mean, the actors hardly look exactly like the humans in the comics... the humans are just representations of what people look like, or the idea of a person. Imagine trying to recreate the humans in Mirage or OT or 2003 to be exact cg versions of those drawings. It would look, very strange, and definitely not realistic.

More slender/athletic looking as opposed to body builder. Really, I think if they go this route, then we will get a pretty good ideal of what a traditional/realistic looking TMNT would look like without looking so grotesque.

In my opinion? because they don't look like real things. I'd argue, the movie turtles are pretty close to that design, if that design were given greater detail.

But it's a game of degrees at this point. I don't know that adding more detail to those designs wouldn't take you into the "ugly" zone. The eyes are really wide, and the shape of the mouth...they would be unsettling, like this is
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M1ggkOfPY3s/T6PACT1GlaI/AAAAAAAAAa4/4coaPTrkkvQ/s1600/Beavis-and-Butt-head-6.jpg

Really impressive, hyper details, beautifully executed level of realism, set in an impossible basic form.

If it were a CGI film, I could see it. Would have been much better than 2007 designs.

It's doing pretty well in theaters so I guess a decent amount of people out there.

Personally I think if you dive too much into realistic you start dipping way too much into monstrous which I think kills the fun of the characters. I'd much prefer the turtles have a bit more innocence to their overall design. It goes hand and hand with the teenage aspect, gives you the impression that they truly are the underdogs and would lead to some bad ass visuals when you see these little guys switch to do or die mode and start ripping bad guys new assholes. The new cartoon captures that perfectly

Well when people were arguing about the mainly positive reception the movie got when it had advanced screenings meant it must be good to which some people countered by saying that other movies were raved about that turned out to have a bad reception overall. One of these was Green Lantern.

Green Lantern was a movie that was similarly panned by the professional critics and picked up a bad reputation but out of curiosity I looked at what the internet community thought about it at the time and instantly found several youtube reviewers who fresh from seeing it raved about what a great the film was and how the critics are wrong and anyone who hates must be a marvel fan. I even saw two videos of people being interviewed outside theaters with them similarly saying it was either a great movie or not that bad etc.

But what do people think of Green Lantern now?

Sound familiar? I don't think this movie stands up to much scrutiny or will stand the test of time of a few months once the thrill of seeing a new big budget live action TMNT movie wears off.

Definitively this.

The OotS designs are perfect for a semi-realistic live-action take on the TMNT, first it's current gen friendly as they are primarily based off the Nick toon, but the designs are still recognizable for all demographics/generations. They keep it simple and classic looking, and the turtles look like humanoid turtles, and not green humans with a carapace backpack. They have expressive eyes and fully emotive mouth without going overboard with looking too human. And I love that they have skin colors like turtles, with streaks of red and yellow in their green skin.

That's pretty close to what I'd want, but again, only if we got something closer in tone to the original comics. I'm kinda weird in that I think realistic looking TMNT would be better for something more serious and closer to the source material, while something pulling from the cartoons is best to have designs that aren't as strict on how much they'd look like real turtles.

Is it a big difference? Are these facts?

Green Lantern went in at #1, it made money, it was marketed as a hit but it was later it was stated that it didn't perform as well as what the studio had hoped hence it's seen a failure.

TMNT is seen as a hit now because it's debuted as #1 and has a whole gaggle of people claiming that because it made more money in it's first two weeks than Gaurdians of the Galaxy it it's second and third weeks that it "beat" that movie but it looks like there's a bit of a battle to make it's budget back. A financially stable movie series shouldn't have that problem.

If there is a difference between the two it's that WB has a number of big comic book properties and other avenues for them to explore Green Lantern in movies (such as a Justice League movie) but Paramount only has TMNT. Their options are more limited.

I remember when Viacom first bought the franchise a site did estimates on how many years it would take for them to start making a profit on it. It seems with this movie struggling to get it's budget back it's going to be some time yet and there's the key; they have to keep the franchise running and do that they...well have to keep the franchise running.

Dude, if you're waiting for the movie to somehow be labeled a failure I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm sure your views are bias because you personally didn't like the movie but you're kidding yourself if you think the film isn't a success at this point. 3 weeks out, 2 at number 1. And even though Guardians is number 1 again it was still neck and neck in terms of box office earnings for the week. It was never going to get numbers like Guardians but it's doing incredibly well because people keep going out to see it. You're trying to downplay it's accomplishments. Face it, people are enjoying the movie.

I know this movie isn't a failure, I know it wont be labelled a failure (which is a different thing entirely) unless something happens say like a sequel tanks in which case I can see this movie being retroactively labelled as a one. That wouldn't really be fair but it's the way these things work.

The way some people talk you'd think it actually did beat Guardians. I don't think it's dowplaying anything to point out that it's nowhere near that level.

Here's a question; why was it never going to get numbers like Guardians?

There was a long running thread on speculating whether Guardians would come out on top in August or if it would be TMNT. For months this movies defenders argued vehemently that GOTG's being an unknown property compared to TMNT being such a recognizable and much loved property made it a certainty that this movie would come out on top. So why is it now retroactively seen as an inevitability that Guardians would win? Why is doing half their business seen now as an accomplishment?

Here's the kicker for me; there's no reason why TMNT shouldn't be making Guardians level money. Comic book movies are very much big business right now, people who liked the 80s show are the right age to get nostalgic about it especially if they have kids of their own who love the Nick show, even teenagers who liked the '03 could turn out for this. There's a bigger media presence for TMNT than there has been in a long time. This movie should be making more. I could easily turn the argument around that if this movie was good it would be on Guardians level of success.

Well this is a different story to months ago when supporters of this movie argued strongly that it would be bigger than Guardians and that any stigma this movie has wouldn't be a factor.

When the whole aliens controversy kicked off and that same camp argued that Michael Bay makes billion dollar hits and the proof being the huge success of the Transformer movies that the casual public doesn't care about the opinions of "whiney fanboys" now it seems that both that the existence of Guadians of the Galaxy and fan negativity is being used to justify the movie not doing those numbers.

Perhaps the question should be why there was so much negativity surrounding this movie in the first place.

That sort of justify's this movie's (as in this particular movie's) performance.

But studios aren't going to, or shouldn't, look at this movie against its own predicted failure. They're going to look at it against the idea of any Ninja Turtles movie, because that's what this was -- a project to get their franchise back into theaters. A Ninja Turtles movie needn't have had to fight against its own backlash as this one did. As Galactus said, there's no reason, with the fame and popularity of this franchise, as well as its current presence, that it shouldn't have seen Guardians of the Galaxy numbers.

This particular Ninja Turtles movie? Sure. All the reasons in the world. But a Ninja Turtles movie? No way. One with decent or, hell, just even not negative, word of mouth could have pulled those numbers. There's no reason for that negative word of mouth to exist; this particular movie brought that on itself wholly on its own.

I'm oddly comforted in knowing that absolutely zero good ideas went into this project from the beginning. Even the earliest concepts and ideas were awful. It's kind of amazing.

Well... those concept pictures are gonna give me nightmares. I like what we got, even if they were all HUGE and Raph looked like he was hit with waaay too many steroids.

The guys' faces in the were rather endearing... I don't know if it's because they actually used the actor's faces for the turtles and not just cgi plasticy facework. I really like Leonardo's design most...

Was there any other concept art for Splinter or the lair? I know we had that really nice 2K3-ish Splinter that was rejected, but did they try anything else..?

The only other concept art of him is the one of him wearing a red robe and not having fur tied up, or a mustache. But if you saw that old concept art then no. It was from that book that there is pics of from months ago.

Man, all these designs are terrible. I'm so tired of people making Raph just this over-sized snapping Turtle brute and Mikey just this goofball. That Shredder design is hideous.

It's not like the designs for the new movie are all that great either, I think we're just more used to them. We certainly got the lesser of two evils with what ended up in the movie. I was on board with the look before the film, but the more I see them...the more they really just don't do anything for me. Oh well.

The second concept-art make guys look like zombies. Rotten zombies at that.

The only decent concept was "Colonel Schraeder" (#2). It is human (or at least human-sized), instantly recognizable as Shredder and doesn't look like Megatron's illegitimate child.

Man, all these designs are terrible. I'm so tired of people making Raph just this over-sized snapping Turtle brute
But he is a brute, a rebel, a barbaric fighter of the group. Hell, the guy in your avatar was the largest, and biggest turtle of the group in the 1990 movie too.

I don't like his size, and physique in that one proposed design. Him and fat, pot belly Mikey look ridiculous. And not in an appealing way. But the Raph we got on the film while being huge (all the turtles are, he's just the biggest) at least he was built with an appealing musculature.

He looked more linebacker than he did husky strong man competition type build.

Mikey just this goofball.
But he is?

Wait you liked the from the get go, saw the movie and how much better they look finally rendered on screen with each character's personality, charm, and nuanced expressions. And now you like them less? You grew distant from them?

I do not understand how that makes sense. I see the reverse trend. Them being alarming at first, but a warming up process. But not the opposite. Especially with the final designs, and how they look on film.

We definitely got the lesser of the evils with the designs. They still keep the essence of classic ninja turtles, and just put on more detail for the big screen. They're essentially the out of the shadows designs with character specific clothing, and accessories.

These other designs are hideous, and not identifiably ninja turtles. Hell, some of these have guns, and look like Teenage Mutant Rambo Turtles. Although maybe that was supposed to the be the alien race from Dimension X via Blue Door?

But either way the turtles we got aren't ugly. They're just more fearsome looking. Mikey in particular is very cute. Especially the way they layered the actors faces into the actual designs, it gave the characters much more personality, and nuance than the animatronic film turtles from the 90s.

Yeah, I could go for a face like that. It's definitely more turtle-esque. What really bugged me the most from the 2014 TMNT faces were the overly humanized lips. Nostrils I'm definitely 100% on board with because that's what turtles actually have, but give them turtle beaks instead of Jay Z lips man.

I hate that the turtles have human hands & pretty much straight up turtle feet, but other than that, they look pretty solid! Sad that everyone wanted to push Mikey over the top, but still... Yeah, definitely a 'literal over kill' in his blades lol especially foot blades..don't really need teeth and a skull nose on his mask either. But still much better than Shreddertron...maybe a little less on this design and we could have had one scary bad ass Shredder...

Not bad... could still be a bit beakier if we're going for 'realistic.' Not bad though. Interesting to see the elements in them that did make it in or were already decided on. Agree on the feet though; though they could seriously rake you with those toes, the hands and feet needed to be a matching set.

If we'd have gotten something I'd have been okay with it.

Splinter looks good and I've always preferred him as a brown rat and having his own weapon like a bow and arrow instead of just using one of Leo's katanas.

One thing I don't care for (and we got in the finished designs) is using their individual masks in other parts. I've always felt it looks okay in animation but in live action it makes them look a bit too cartoonish - that's just me. Other than that the turtles and Splinter are okay with me.

The villains look AWESOME. A little similar to movie Splinter, but I think the movie one suffers from mange. This person has some serious talent.

The Turtles... ehhh... not quite feeling it. With comparisons able to be made between art concepts and what the film used, there are elements of the film version I end up preferring a bit more at this point (who'd have thunk). Prefer the wider nose design on movie Leo (and Donnie) and that he looks 'snoutier' at least in profile.

While not my preferred rout to go Fred Wolf inspired designs would have been much better than what we got.

Certainly this could have been the basis just filter out some of the sillier aspects as I think initialized belt buckles and color coded accessories beyond their bandannas would have looked silly in live action..heck it looked silly with what we got in the new movie right down to Raph's red undies :trolleye:.

It still baffles me that Leibesman and one of the FX guys claims the look we got based on the Mirage comics. What comics were they reading?

Also what's with the fascination to make Shredder into a soldier with all these concept designs?

Again not necessarily my preferred rout but it would be a genuine nostalgia trip to see those versions of Rocksteady and Bebop. Of course I can't see them using them in the sequel. Those two would be no match for the 2014 turtles unless they mysteriously shrink down by 2016.

Why did Laird sell? Was the money to good to miss?

AFAIK? He'd been doing it for 25 years and his interest was waning. Running the franchise as a business, even though he wasn't doing it alone, had to have been pretty draining, too - it's what kept him and Kevin from continuing to make the comic together on a regular basis during the busier period of "Turtlemania" (and ultimately ever again) and I get the feeling that the wider business demands wore them both down a lot. Easy to forget now that Kevin is pretty involved in the property across the board, but for over ten years, Kevin was gone and Peter was still at it. Creative types tend to get pretty bored just doing one thing, too, even if they love it. So in his shoes, at that time, I think $60 million would be hard to turn down.

I love seeing these! Honestly though, I think the designs they landed up using are still the best.. for the turtles anyways. (just de-buff 'em a little bit!)

Some of those Shredders and Splinters look amazing. If Bebop and Rocksteady land up looking like that I'll be so happy.

Nope they won't $50 says the Kraang ends up being a gigantic godzilla sized tentacle monster and bebop is a mutated rhinoceros...beatle. While rocksteady is a cyborg pig with eye lasers.

You have got to be fraking kidding me. We could have had these turtles on screen instead of the ones we got stuck with. Granted, these aren't great turtles designs but they are far and away better versions of the designs that ended up in the movie. What the sh!t?!

2014 version sucked, and the Fred wolf inspired versions are only marginally better.

If only they could find artists that understand design, not collage artists who know zbrush and photoshop.

Shredders voice was the only redeeming aspect of the entire film. That's pitiful.

PETA seems to very easily believe in crazy ideas... where are they at and grabbing a few equally crazy human rights people to create a special branch and sue for the apparent abuse forced onto the Turtles with steroids.

A few more designs. The noses look a little ape like but the gear isn't half bad. I also like this Splinter and Shredder.

These are not perfect, but better than the final product.

What is wrong with you? I really liked the new turtles movie, especially that they were really big, and tough looking. I hope they make them bigger in part 2, like 8 feet tall. Then they can really beat up the foot. I want to see more the Actors faces. Alan is really good looking. i also thought Mike's fart Jokes were funny! His Shell gets tight, HAHA!!!!

I hope they make Shredder bigger too. Maybe he can be a full robot in 2 because that would be cool. Maybe he could also transform like the other movies.
Ninja's are stupid anyway, I'm glad they weren't Ninja's. They should be MMA fighters, those guys are tough. I've never met a Ninja, but MMA is real deal broseph!

Oh and I don't like Megan Fox, So that was a let down, but still okay.
Maybe they will mutate her into a turtle in part 2. I would like to see Megan fox as a Turtle so she can fight with the other turtles and eat more pizza.

Would be easier. But only for the fact that the Foot will probably just be like "You know..." and relocate to Jersey.

The turtles are big enough. Infact this is likely the biggest they've been right up there with the 2003 Beefcake turtles.

No, not all of us.

Why not? big muscles are better. If you have BIG muscles, you beat people up.
I would add Anna Kendick as April oneal when they mutate Megan into a turtle.
Anna is not pretty, so i like that she looks like a regular girl, because April should be a regular not pretty girl.

That.....is the most terrible and lamest reasoning I've ever heard.
