That's basically my opinion, except for the Shredder. He was a shallow as Hell villain; much like the whole Foot Clan in the film, but at least he was interesting looking and fought in an unconventional way.

Ughh I really hope this trilogy doesn't turn out to be like Transformers. Is it too much to ask for a good turtles movie?

CyberCubed

The entire movie was off. We barely got to know these Turtles, there was no time to simply get used to their personalities or chemistry (or lack thereof) together. It just went from action scene to action scene.

The worst part about the movie aside from the half-baked plot was that these Turtles just weren't very likeable. Even ignoring the designs their personalities came across as parodies of themselves stripped down to the bare minimum.

All Don did was say tech talk, all Mikey did was make jokes, all Raph did was get angry, and Leo just said calm or leader-y stuff. Its like someone took the bare minimum of their personalities and made it work.

It shoudn't be, and that's the sad part. Their story is pretty straight forward, no reason to get all complex. See, for me, it's not the story, but the brotherhood within the story, and the Turtles are so easy to identify, I just don't understand why it would be difficult to make a good TMNT movie.

This. Omigosh please let him voice Leo, not just Mocap. I can't imagine how he can remain calm after all that work done only to have your movement but not voice in the movie. Basically being a puppet. He's a strong guy not making a scene so far..or maybe he's contractually obligated not to.

The more I think of this movie the more and more I realize what a mess it was. What on earth was the point of 3 huge action scenes back to back? The 3 Turtles are only captured for like...10 minutes because Raphael gets to the fortress immediately in the next scene.

The adrenaline scene was awful. It was meant to be funny when they were jumping around but they came off as borderline retarded.

I also dislike Shredder's look more and more. He looked like a bland robot with knives coming all out of him instead of Shredder.

Yeah, I feel for the guy. Leo too. Think its quickly become my main dislike... Really hope they will hear out fan feedback that wants Pete to have a shot at it next time.

I'm sure after spending so long portraying Leo he's a million times more connected and familiar with the guy than Knoxville who seemed to admit in a video to not even doing any research... Pete and Leo, fingers crossed for you guys.

Who is the "Mtv generation" these days, I thought it was those who originally grew up on it way back and are "old" now.

Because that said... 35 here and I liked it enough to consider checking it out again. It's not perfect, definitely some issues there, but hoping they will be resolved/improved in the sequel.

The plot was dumb and silly, but the worst part were the Turtles themselves. They just weren't likeable. You HAVE to make the Turtles likeable to care about them.

It's like someone wikipedia'd their personalities and gave them a few lines of dialogue per each trait and that's it. And those god awful glasses on Donatello, whoever thought it was a good idea to have Don wear glasses all the time needs to be slapped upside the head.

I finally saw the film yesterday and it was definitely cool seeing an actual TMNT movie on the big screen for the first time in almost 25 years! Neutral but with a slight leaning toward "like". It provides lots of decent moments from what you expect for a TMNT story- an origin story, April's encounter with the Turtles and her backstory, the Foot, rescues, and a final battle with the Shredder along with some pop cultural references and humor, most noticeably the cat on one of the TVs that was gagged later on. That said, I feel that the flaws for me are the over the top Turtles' designs, the lack of the Turtles' introductions (though if you know their basic personalities, it fits), a bit too focused on April (Though not too much to make it unlikeable), and some silliness.

I'll say this much (and this is my first post): I went into the movie thinking it would not be very good. I was surprised, however, by how much "fun" it was.

In terms of plot, pacing and character development, the movie disappointed big time. But I left the theater pleasantly surprised and more pleased than I thought I'd be because the turtles were entertaining, the action scenes were cool and the CGI was pretty good.

I still probably rate the film behind the trilogy from the 90s, but I think it was enjoyable.

Maybe one day we'll get a movie/trilogy in the mold of Nolan's recent Batman films that try had a darker, grittier and more serious tone. This isn't it, but that's okay because it's meant to be fun.

Majority of users here liked it; does that mean a majority of users here are under 20?

Even if you're right, which you aren't, I'm pretty sure under 20 was the primary demographic the movie was trying to reach anyway (besides nostalgic 34 year olds)

I'm in my 30's and loved it. A couple holes in the plot but I thought they did a great job with the turtle's expressions and personalities. Really entertaining. I also like that April had more of a central heroic role than just the (yawn) damsel in distress.

I'm split inbetween hating this thing and really loving it. Anytime the Turtles were on screen was a blast, but after that this thing slid down hill quickly.

The plot was dumb, Shredder was worthless and so was his plan (or was its sachs plan?).

Megan Fox was so, so for me. But pretty much every character was shallow and pointless and only existed to move the plot forward.

Now that shredder didn't end up being militarian, I am from here on out going to assume that the foot is weird, that they look militarian cause they are weird. The fact that shredder isn't like that and that they are isn't bad if you look at it that way.

I really don't know why people hate this movie, if you ask me, it is a lot better than a lot of movies that many film critics praised and liked a lot. I usually find the types of films that they champion to be really terrible if not average.

IndigoErth

Doesn't matter if some people hate it. No movie appeals to all.

No critic, fan, non-fan, child, adult, man, woman, whoever are all going to feel the same.

My mother is among the generation of parents that had to put up with my generation's Turtlemania years ago. She saw it with me, I wasn't sure how that was going to go over, but she surprised me by liking it quite a bit. (And unlike me had the benefit of not knowing much about the Turtles so plot holes and odd deviations from the usual story wasn't all that obvious to her.)

I really don't know why people hate this movie.

From Everything I Heard and Everything Said? I can make some Educated Guesses...

*The Turtles are secondary characters in their own Movie, and it's more like April O'Neil: The Movie (she's the one with a personal connection to the villain since it was her father killed, etc...and she even gets the last strike on the main villain)
*Lack of actual Martial Arts fights, and if shown it's terribly edited and/or shaky (a figure that Might be Raph might have thrown a container, the Subway sequence no one can tell who did what to who), except maybe the Shredder vs. Splinter and final fight at the end...
*When the Turtles do fight, they just get their butts kicked. Badly.
*Humor some people didn't care for (fart joke, the 'shell/tightening' joke, Mikey's constant pick-up lines for April, the Adrenaline scene, etc.)
*Lackluster/rickety Plot (stuff heals Splinter, and yet doesn't he already have mutagen stuff; ending straight out of Amazing Spider-Man)
*Lack of Personal connection between the Turtles/Splinter & the Villain for the Origin (no 'was dishonored and had to leave' like the 80's cartoon, no 'master was killed and my ear was cut' like the 1990 film, no 'my wife is killed, and the daughter I thought was dead is really with my enemy' like the new cartoon...just 'we were tests subjects and 'I read a book on Martial arts')
*No worthwhile action for the first half of the film...(subway, not able to see anything, bad if you're Epileptic)...so the short lair battle, the Snow chase, and the fight at the end...that's it.
*No actual character development for any of the Turtles, leading to a speech from Raph that made zero sense in this particular film because it had no basis, no build-up, and would have worked better if it was the Raph from somewhere else (2003 show, 2k12 show, even first movie)...but here it's almost 'out of the blue' other than a 10 second scene before where he says 'I'm gonna leave', that's it.
*No heart, and if it does it was pretty phony.
*Useless characters (for example, Karai being pointless)

So yeah...I can make an Educated Guess as to why some folks would hate this one...

-It's not one of the deal breakers if you are someone who isn't into the ninja side of the turtles too much (I wasn't when I was growing up with them). They were not completely void of being ninja like, they had their silent moments. Their style of ninjitsu in the world they live in can be seen as some modified version of martial arts, maybe they didn't feel like fighting in ninjitsu mode.

-The turtles didn't always get their butt kicked, they never got beat up by the foot clan at least. They were shown beating up shredder when they played buck buck and they managed to defend them selves when shredder was trying to beat them up.

-Raph giving his speech made sense, the turtles are powerful enough to break something while holding on to it. Hell, earlier on we see leo holding on to a piece of the building, while he was he was crushing it with his grip. He could have fell to his death cause of his own strength. Raph giving his speech, it didn't just happen as soon as the movie started, there was a series of events that lead up to it.

-Eh, she played the part of the leader of the foot clan since shredder wasn't fulfilling that role for a while. If she was useless then she would have never taken an order, there wasn't any moment in the film where she said screw the foot clan, I'm done. She must be doing something right in some sense if shredder didn't kick her out of the foot clan for good.

-No heart? I dunno, I really don't know what people mean when they talk about a movie having or not having a heart, this too is subjective.

-The subway and and doc action bit makes sense, I mean the fighting was fast...splinter didn't want them to reveal themselves. If any of them had fought slow the cover would be blown, so them dishing out the pain had to be rapid.

Ramboraph4life aka Matt

-The turtles are secondary characters for some of the movie, because there are other characters in the movie, the screen time has to be divided up. if you wanna see more of them then the budget has to be greater and/or there would have to be less characters/screen time for anyone who is not mike, don, leo, or raph..

No one's seeing the film for Will Arnett and Megan Fox, so give them less screen time. Why not have this new film from Raph's eyes, or Leo's Point of View, or Mikey's viewpoint? They can easily be 3-Dimensional characters with at least some character development (and to anyone reading, no I'm not saying it needs to be Shakespeare) that an audience can relate to...that's part of the reason they sustained for so many years.

-It's not one of the deal breakers if you are someone who isn't into the ninja side of the turtles too much (i wasn't when i was growing up with them). they were not completely void of being ninja like, they had their silent moments. their style of ninjitsu in the world they live in can be seen as some modified version of martial arts, maybe they didn't feel like fighting in a ninjitsu mode.

No one has ever mentioned any 'silent moments'. Throwing gigantic containers, smashing into a Humvee, making one flip over with a Bo, taking people down with just one punch or one kick (and they go flying off like Rag Dolls) isn't any interesting Martial Arts that I know of...it's more 'The Avengers/Super-Hero Comic Books' realm. For a film with the words 'Ninja' in its' Title, it shouldn't need Bulletproof & Super Hero Strength stuff for them to get by just to be 'different'.

--The turtles didn't always get their butt kicked, they never got beat up by the foot clan at least. they were shown beating up shredder when they played buck buck and they managed to defend them selves when shredder was trying to beat them up.

Never got beat up by the Foot? So, they were no threat, then... Even in the first film, The Foot was somewhat of a match. Enough of the Foot took Raph down and thrown through a skylight, but at least he took some down before that happened. And in the antique shop fight, the Turtles were doing well...but then they were overpowered and were losing the battle (until Casey joined up). So The Foot seems more of a threat in the first film while this they were pointless? (even with guns, since they are Bulletproof now). And from the sound of it, in the Raph vs. Shredder, Raph didn't even do much of anything against Shredder...not saying he had to beat Shredder and win all by himself. But not even a couple of successful Kicks/punches or anything to fight back against and have 'somewhat' of a chance?

A turtle throwing a container into soldiers, nothing 'Ninja' about that at all.

And having 'tons of flashing lights' (whether in a Subway or such) for your fight/action scene would be annoying, not interesting. And not many can remember even exactly who did what during that Subway scene. This isn't an independent film, it's a 'big budget, Popcorn/Summer Action movie.'

And not having much of memorable action scenes for half of your film? It's not like you have any folks going 'Wow, that Subway scene was So Cool! You remember that!" Not that many. It's always 'lair fight, Splinter & Shredder, Snow Chase, Ending Fight.' But nothing action-wise in the first half. That's a Pretty big fail for a big 'Popcorn Action flick'.

And from my understanding, you had the chance for the Turtles to have a big ole, giant fight with a bunch of folks before they get to Shredder...but instead they just 'go to the elevator'. So instead of a scene that Could have shown more Martial Arts/Fights to make folks happy...they just go to the elevator so they can dance (why the hell would someone like Raph dance? How is that Not out of character for him?)

How can the Turtles/Splinter have a personal connection to the villains, when it's just 'we were test subject pets, we grew up, and Splinter read the book'. There is nothing Personal between them and Shredder with that stuff?

So Raph telling them for 10 seconds "I'm going to leave", and saying a line 'why do you tell me what to do Leo' was all that they needed to do script-writing wise for Raph to give a big, humongous, 'Heart-Felt Speech' of how he felt he 'wasn't good enough and I Love You' without it being out of character for him (although, someone like him Dancing in an Elevator is another out of character thing as well, when the Hell would Raph ever Dance in an Elevator)? Unless there are quite a few films that someone on this forum didn't mention that Raph did or said during the movie...

A movie having no 'heart' means there is no Genuine/Sincere emotions that really make you feel. And if/when it tries, it comes off as either Phony or not being Earned at all.

On the other hand...the 1990 film, for example, Does have a lot of Heart to it. What with the campfire scene , Splinter's talk with Raph, or Raph & Leo hugging in the 1990 movie.

I'm just saying, it's very easy to understand why folks would hate this film. You're not wrong for loving it, but it's understandable why some folks don't.

Given what you perceive as heart when it comes to a movie, it sounds like there was plenty of heart in this one, the turtles were mostly serious through out the course of it. Pretty big fail? That is three pieces of action sequences, there is a total of five in the movie. That is just about all of them, unless you include the raph vs shredder fight. The foot were no threat? They were to the people at the subway area at least, they were helpless before the turtles came along. If the the foot clan wasn't a threat the turtles wouldn't even be fighting with them in the first place, all that would be going on is total peace between both parties.

How do you figure? The only thing anyone ever talks about when dealing with 'emotions' was 'Raph's Speech', which some even say it wasn't earned at all and it came off as Phony & Fake, since the Raph in This Film wasn't even that bad/mean/nasty to his family at all.

You can be funny and still have heart. It's a matter of demonstrating a character that you can relate to/fell for.

Pretty big fail? that is 3 action pieces, there is a total of 5 in the movie. That is just about all of them.

And no memorable action scenes in it's first 45 minutes of a 90-some minute movie. Or, not even any action in it's first 45 minutes that anyone on here actually talks about or even Mentions. If they mention action, it's in the second half of the film.

So yeah, pretty big fail for a Big Budget, Summer Action Movie.

It's only certain people who seemingly believe that the action during the first act is trash. Maybe you should make a thread specifically for them (unless you don't care too much), personally speaking, I am not concerned with the lack of attention they are getting. At all.

That I don't mind, but I guess it has to do with the context. Raphael dances in a scene in the Nick toon, but it's to gloat for winning a video game, something I see his character doing. I didn't mind much of Raph dancing in the elevator scene, believe it or not, my eyebrow raised at Leo twerking. A little dancing like they had in the movie, or in the 1990 flick is OK, but outright headbanging and twerking. Totally out of character.

I agree. If he's always angry then he's not a three dimensional character.

I have this sinking feeling, that they put that in the movie because MTV is probably going to have "best elevator moment" in their movie awards, and TMNT will be pitted against Captain America 2. Due to the fact that Paramount/Viacom own MTV, I expect the TMNT to win the award for some shameless advertisement.

Because in one moment he is a 'gruff, Batman-voice, I want to Leave' type of character...then it's "I'm dancing in an elevator"?

If you're going to do that, then you need decent writing to either build that up, make that type of transition more smooth, or something called 'character development' as in 'a character changing throughout the course of a story in a manner that actual makes sense, whether logically or emotionally'.

If you had stuff of him being a prick to his brothers...then, when they are taken, he's hoping that his brothers' are OK and not hurt...then being glad that they're not harmed and safe....then you could transition into 'ok, I will loosen up and not be so moody'. It seems there is zero transitions for anybody in this film.

And just because it's a film 'produced by Michael Bay', doesn't mean it can't have stuff like that which is part of Basic Story Telling

The elevator scene is a hit or miss for many people.
Mikey did mention earlier that they have a "hip hop group" and Raph was their "hype man". Now when I first heard that line I felt it was just thrown in there for laughs BUT after the elevator scene it sort of ties those both idea in there. TO ME (my opinion let me have it, think its stupid er whatever I don't care) it worked because Mikey started it to loosen up after knowing that they have very little time to stop the city from being poisoned. The other 3 at first looked tense and hesitant but eventually loosened up and joined in before their showdown with Shredder.

I still hated the fact that they were super strong bulletproof Turtles but meh. :tconfuse:
I know this was no perfect movie but I liked it more than I disliked it for sure.

I hated the movie for what it offered me. The more I think of the glaring plot holes, character development, re-edits that proved the people creating this had no confidence and lack of overall creative vision...the more I get upset this movie has been as successful as it has been. It makes me really wish that Disney would just buy Viacom and perhaps give the TMNT franchise the Marvel treatment and allow people to work on an IP that give a **** about giving people something fun, exciting and substantial as opposed to something where you feel the need to just eat popcorn and take it for what it is at surface level.

I also started to think about April O' Neil's character and how Michelangelo and Vernon act with her. It's borderline sexual harassment with how aggressive they're being towards her. Megan Fox is nowhere near as sexualized as she was in the Transformers movies but men around her treat her like a piece of meat. Anytime Mikey is talking to April, EVERYTHING he's saying is in some sort of comforting or pushy manner that is supposed to be cute but ends up being entirely creepy and obsessive. Seriously, I can't recall anything that he said that wasn't in some form of fashion to hit on her or to get the two of them alone. I know that's in Mike's character to be a little flirty but it was nowhere the aggression and straight up fraternity douchebag-isms that's displayed in this film. Michelangelo, on top of his obnoxious "comedy lines" in the film, displays the fact of how I hate how all the characters were handled in this movie.

Now look at Vern, his isn't as in your face as Mike's is...but he's another character that's essentially trying to help her out because he has a crush on her and basically wants to sleep with her. He makes remarks to how attractive she is, stares at her ass, says "I'll play your game" after getting off the phone with her (What, the game of pretending to be a friend so I can sleep with you?) and even makes a remark about dropping a pretty girl off at a friend's house. What the hell? It's supposed to be in fun but that's more of the Michael Bay-isms showing it's ugly side.

And how are we supposed to take April seriously at her job? For someone that apparently went to journalism school (I could be getting that quote wrong) she sure is pretty terrible at her job. For being so convinced that the turtles are the "vigalantes", why couldn't she come up with a better pitch to show her boss that the turtles are in fact the people helping to stop the Foot. Instead of cueing the video up to show one of the turtles breaking the glass with his damn head/beak, April shows her video of turtles in a jar and eating pizza I believe. She ends up getting fired for this and it's a complete slap in the face of what makes her character so special. That scene's only purpose was to show how crazy she's becoming due to this story and as a gag. It's like the movie is making fun of it's own concept and not taking itself seriously.

I'm all for a movie laughing at itself, most Marvel movies find a way to do that....but those films still find a way to tell a story that is rich in detail and allows you to insert the world and play by it's rules. This movie had no such luck and on top of the fact that I can't stand that they're essentially super human, bullet proof, ninja in title only monsters...really makes me sad that we're going to see concepts of the TMNT lore finally put to screen in sequels but within this god awful version.

Oh well. At least I still have the old movies, old comic books, old cartoon, old toys, new cartoon and new comic book to enjoy. Platinum Dunes won't ever be able to take that way from me.

I think little kids and the MTV generation liked the movie, but those of us over 20 probably didn't.

Cubed, Most of us who grew up with the OT ARE the MTV generation! Seriously- MTV stopped being relevant around the time they stopped actually showing MUSIC VIDEOS. Sometime in the mid to late 90's, in other words.

Who is the "Mtv generation" these days, I thought it was those who originally grew up on it way back and are "old" now.

Because that said... 35 here and I liked it enough to consider checking it out again. It's not perfect, definitely some issues there, but hoping they will be resolved/improved in the sequel.

You are correct! 37 here, and I for one loved it! I was one who saw it twice, too, and I caught a lot of things in the second viewing that didn't make much sense the first time.

I am one who liked it too. Honestly, it did take me a second viewing to iron out everything story wise, but after I did that I liked it a lot.

I think what ScrewtheMirageTMNT was trying to get at (lovely user name btw) was that I've already thrown my weight around on why I didn't care for the film and now this "too long, didn't read" post just further states my displeasure for it. However, most of the points I dive into are things I haven't already discussed with people on the board. I'm sorry if it seems like I have sour grapes when it comes to this movie, but there's just so much wrong with it overall I feel the need to discuss.

Oh and I was actually excited for the movie prior to actually leaving the theater after watching it. I warmed up to the designs after watching the second trailer and I was super anxious to go see this thing. The Rotten Tomato scores were disheartening, but it didn't seem to sway my anticipation for it. Besides, critics have never been extremely kind to TMNT films. I predicted and had hoped the score would've landed in that 60% range, but jesus christ was I off.

Did I think it was going to be my favorite TMNT film or in my top 5 this year? Not quite. I didn't think it would ever be able to dethrone TMNT 1990 as my favorite Ninja Turtle film, but it could be a nice second. Well, this movie is a flat fourth favorite of mine after watching it. It's just not a very well put together piece of film.

Huh? Man, you're missing some of my points by a mile.

Yes, you're right. Most of my posts have dealt with my negativity towards the film. Your notion of bringing up the fact that I've mentioned my dislike of the film is almost like you saying "DUDE, WE GOT IT...STOP" over the fact that I'm bringing up more points as to why I felt it was a bad film. I get it that it might be something you don't agree with, but regardless....they are my opinions on why I feel this film is entirely flawed.

Also, people really need to stop bringing up the fact that TMNT was originally just an inside joke as a crutch when it comes to the movie's bad/nonsensical plot and lack of creativity & character. Something as ridiculous as a concept like Guardians of the Galaxy is an example of when you take an IP and treat the material with respect (even if the concept is goofy) you can still come away with a story and a film that helps you become immersed in the world it creates for you. This film didn't do that and it comes across laughing at it's material as opposed to laughing with it. If you don't see that, fine. Those are your eyes....not mine.

My taste is my own taste. I can enjoy a movie like Salo: 120 Days of Sodom just as much as I can eat my popcorn and watch Captain America...but the problem is when a movie isn't confident in itself is when the cracks in the film become apparent. I'm sorry most people here just don't seem to acknowledge or care about them as much.

The major offensive with this film is just how little of an effort they put in to it and how successful it's become. That's the true offensive part.

Anyway, no need to continue discussing this in this thread. Carry on everybody.

Thought he has the 2nd best Donatello voice behind Feldman of course. There is only one line I thought sounded bad, it was at the end he says "That wasn't the elevator" and it just sounded like a different person.

Him using that thing to VERIFY her identity is stupid. They just saw her, what a day before in story? Was it even a day? Seems like he had to use it cus he couldn't remember what she looked like.

Did you see the movie? He didn't need to use it at all, it was silly, it was a joking moment. He just hacked into her computer. He has all that tech he was probably just finding a reason to use it. The whole scene was filled with jokes.

Mikey clearly knew it was her but he was tongue in cheek asking if she was April O'Neil.

I just remembered, Splinter says April O'Neil is important, so why not verify it's her, why just assume you've been talking to the right person? They're about to bring her to Splinter, better make sure she's who they want.

No, I didn't see the movie. I'm just talking about a scene I pulled out of the air.

Saw nothing funny about it. Seems to me if he had to find a reason, he shouldn't have had all of it.

That's fine if you didn't think it was funny, but it was supposed to be. He's a teenager playing with his toys essentially. When I saw it today there weren't that many people in the theater, but everyone laughed at that scene, the adrenaline scene, the elevator scene got a huge laugh, and the final scene with the rocket and song to April.

Just because the joke is supposed to be funny, doesn't mean that it is. I don't know how many comedy shows I have gone where the comedian had to be yanked off the stage because of all of the crickets chirping in the room. TMNT reminded me of that scenario. Many times throughout the movie.

It's 50/50 for me. I didn't love the movie but I didn't hate it either. Was a bit sore on the eyes at times during the action scenes. Mikey was a creep too.

I'm mostly nuetral towards it. At first I didn't like the turtles designs but over time I've grown to except them as it reminds me of the earliest issues of the Mirage stories where they seem to be dark, gritty, and intimidating. However, I feel that the plot doesn't clarify on a lot of aspects. Why does Shredder want to take control of the city, why does Eric Sachs want to infest the city with mutagen just so they can look like a hero, etc.?

The humor for this movie was a bit cringe-worthy at times. It clashed with the whole real design aspect. When you design the turtles to make them look dark and grittier and yet you make them out to be big goofballs, it just doesn't mesh well. Mikey's sense of humor was once again a bit too forced. While he didn't come off as necessarily 'dumb', he was a bit spararctic. That fart joke was really unnecessary. :ohwell:

The cast (Goldberg and Arnett aside) were actually pretty good. I know I'm the minority but I enjoyed Knoxville as Leo. Even Megan Fox didn't do that bad. She wasn't the best April but she's far from horrible. I wouldn't mind if she didn't return for the sequel since I think there are much better actresses to play April but I won't be disappointed if she returns.

This movie I liked for the most part. My biggest problem with the movie is not for what it is but for what it could have been. You have these scary looking mutant turtles which could have harkened back to the original tone of the source material but instead decide to make it goofy in a lot of aspects. A lot of changes need to be made for the sequel. It needs a better writing crew, a better producer, and a whole different direction.

I don't even have problems with changing things up for movies etc, just make the changes for the better, not because you have to change something up for the sake of it.

Have to disagree with you entirely with your 1990 movie not being good comment.

Unlike the 2014 film, the original film has a clear, cohesive & sensical plot that allows it's title characters to be the stars and everyone has the right amount of screen time.

It blends the comic and cartoon quite well and it's antagonist actually has genuine motivation for his plan.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone really say the original film was "Bad"; maybe cheap. Once you mentally allow for any budgetary restrictions, it holds up really well. It's not like it has a ton of plot holes or bad acting or things that don't make any sense, it was just done on the cheap.

Meanwhile, tons of movies coming out these days are made on a budget that's larger than the entire annual GDP of some smaller countries, and still can't finagle their way around those pesky little "plot holes/bad acting/nonsense story" traps. Funny thing, that.

Sad thing, they could probably hire an intern from a film school who would do a cohesive script, free of charge, just get the experience and some credits. And they could probably do a lot better job than the morons being payed the millions to do it.

I feel like a smaller budget can be an asset sometimes. I know that the 1990 movie was a pretty grueling production for the cast/crew at times, but I'd wager it also had a smaller/tighter crew, less studio meddling, and less cooks to spoil the broth in general. (They also clearly had a better director and better writers, so that helps too.)

The best mega-blockbusters tend to be the ones where the writers/producers/director have a clear vision and have/give each other the creative freedom to see it through. Safe to say that was not the case with the Platinum Dunes movie.

And judging by the poll, most people on this site liked the movie lol.

Technically, more than 50% of the responders disliked at least some of it. It's a very mixed reception at best.

Didn't like it. 4/10.

Way too much exposition. Way too much time spent explaining the uninteresting origin. Not enough time spent getting to know the turtles or fleshing out their personalities, and they were all stripped down to their most basic character traits. Rushed and/or underused elements left and right. Obvious reshoots and deleted scenes. Almost everything was blandified across the board. One of the most heartless, mechanical, lazy, uneconomical screenplays I've seen in a while.

At the least the action was ok, and the humor and performances were better than expected.

I was so pumped for this movie, and yet it turned out to be the only film I saw this summer that I actively disliked. Here's hoping the sequel's a little bit better.

Yeah, it's the plot in the 1990 movie does make a lot more sense and it's good that the characters have some genuine moment, it's still the superior film in this case after all.

The problem is that a lot of the elements feel like they're crammed in, the subplot about Danny (which takes up a signifigant portion of the movie) was invented for the movie and it's kind of weak since Danny joins the Foot really weak reasons like "Dad treats me like a kid".
In addition to that, okay I know there are brief moments where the turtles' individual character traits show like in the "waiting for pizza" scene but most of the time (except for Raph) they feel more or less like variations on the same guy, who constantly spouts puns and pop culture references and that's really annoying.

Like I said though, there are enough decent parts about the 1990 movie to make enjoyable enough but I would only recommend it people who are already TMNT fans and I don't think I would recommend it to people unfamiliar with TMNT.

Danny's not exactly the movie's highlight, but I'd argue he had more motivation for his actions than pretty much every character in the new movie. And he actually had a bit of a character arc, at that. Not a great one, necessarily, but... again, it's more than the new movie could be bothered to do.

I take it you've never gone through a rebellious stage? The kid was in love with Sid Vicious, heck that's how he got the role. He talked about the Sex Pistols with the casting guy (the Pistols were a manufactured punk band, but that's neither here nor there).

Danny was the typical kid rebelling at his father cause that's what a lot of teenagers do.. even Raph is a bit rebellious towards Splinter, "couldn't this wait till morning?"

"You will listen NOW!"..

This. And not to mention, The Shredder preyed on such kids that were feeling rebelious, or forgotten or alone (which Danny could have felt, seeing as his Father was the sole parent in the household, and holding down as the primary manager of a news studio, which would mean he worked long hours and was probably barely home, and if he was, he was still working, so didn't have much time for Danny) so either way, I can totally see what happened to Danny, happen. Reason being, because this stuff happens all of the time. A kid could grow up in the perfect home, but all it takes for them to be around certain kinds of kids who don't obey the rules, the cool kids, and that one perfect kid could toss his whole life aside to justify fitting in with the cool kids.

His dad was also a high-stress/control-oriented kind of guy. Dude was constantly getting dragged along to impromptu work meetings out of office hours, too - like the apartment visit Danny was clearly annoyed about. And April seemed very familiar with Danny, suggesting that sort of thing happened a lot. It made sense that he'd want to rebel and "disappear" from his life. That always seemed pretty natural to me, if a bit heavy-handed.
