Lets face it "Heroes in a Half-Shell" sounded alot catchier than "Turtles Count it Off!" but there were other things I missed about the show. Rocksteady and Bebop were always my favorite villians, because they were so funny!

I love the new show, but I never have warmed up to the new theme song. It's just not as catchy, in my opinion. The old theme song is a cartoon classic for sure.

I miss the comedy, I wish that the new toon was more like the 1st movie. It had the perfect blend of comedy and action. The other thing I miss is the old theme song of course. Suprisingly I don't miss Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady. When they are in their places in the old toon they are the best but they just wouldn't fit at all in the new toon. Rocksteady and Bebop wouldn't live long enough to have a good career with the Shredder and there's no way Shredder would let Krang push him around like he does in the old cartoon. Lately, I've only been watching the old toon though.
Krang : "Someone has to clean up this mess..."
Bebop: "If we close our eyes they'll never find us."

eyeballs :|
I mean, i get that they are tryin to make the turtles look cooler or tougher or whatever with the evil empty eyes look. But it just aint workin. Havin eyes makes them more personable, and they look plenty mean and hardcore in the original intro/seasons with eyeballs when theyre pissed.

I just don't get it. I mean, it makes sense when Batman or Robin's eyes disappear when they put their masks on, since they have night vision apparatus and stuff built into their masks which conceals their eyes; it's more than just a visual thing (though I'm sure it started that way). I just don't get why when the TMNT wear masks, their eyes vanish. I know I think too much... Personally I always draw them with eyes, it's easier to convey emotion and expression that way.
Karpo_007
08-13-2003, 07:14 AM
My guess is, that since it was originally a parody of the Super Hero comics at the time, they made the eyes the same way.

OH YEAH!! I miss the pizza a lot. A big part of the turtles is the pizza..which they dont eat enough in the cartoon. And i also miss cowabunga.
Actually, we haven't seen the Turtles eat a bite of pizza since the show began. They only talked about it or there would be pizza boxes lying around. Leo fell asleep holding a slice in Nano.
jeff the cheff
08-22-2003, 02:00 PM
There are some pizza refrences in the new show. In the way of invisibility mikey was about to grab a slice but casey got to it first. And there are pizza boxes in aprils apartment. I also remember on one of the mouser episodes the opening monologue said the mousers chew through metal like michelangelo chews a pizza.

Mainly because of the whole Mike and Kala thing.
And, the Theme song. (although, I prefer the foxbox promotional one)
Other than that, I'm satisfied with just the new cartoon.
Of course, if the old cartoon includes the Archie comics, then I miss Stump Wrestling, Raph's Dark Suit, Wingnut & Screwloose, etc.

-PIZZA!
-cowabunga
-Foot Soldiers being robots (so Raph and Leo could use their weapons for other than blocking)
-The Technodrome

I was thinking the same thing the other night. I mean 12 years ago the turtles were the greatest phenominon ever, but nowadays people don't seem to take much notice. The new show may be cool and all, but I can't see it becoming as popular as the original was.
Karpo_007
08-27-2003, 06:19 AM
Old show was the same as Pokemon are now. Children's kraze for a few years. People lost intrest after 1990 season, there after the ratings dropped trasticly. Red sky got some ratings back, but there were only 8 episodes per season...
New show won't certainly ever be that popular, even tough the show is technically better. Most people probably think that the TMNT is a thing of the past, and Fox BOX might limit the ratings to. But there is nothing to worry about, atleast yet since second season has been confirmed. Besides that toys and Dreamwave comics are selling extremely well, so 4kids is making money of the TMNT, and that's what matters.
But if Fox Box does not rise it's ratings this season, third season of the TMNT might not happen. Well I guess it's to early to be talking about that yet.
Tokka-B
08-27-2003, 11:34 AM
You forgot to add an "I think" before the show is technically better.
The only thing similar with the old show and pokemon are that they were both popular, everything else is completely different. A lot of the comedy you need to be older than a kid to understand, just like Simpsons.
The old show may have been more popular, but the new show has much better animation. Making it more adaptable to the storyline is both a plus and minus, as far as ratings and finance goes. You might lose more of the younger audience, but gain more of the older audience, but Saturday morning FOXBOX seems to appeal mostly to the younger audience. I personally, don't know any adults who watch FOXBOX. It's also too early in the morning for them. I think mostly the hardcore fans are keeping this show going.
Karpo_007
08-27-2003, 11:45 AM
Pokemon pehonmenom is very similar to TMNT. Atracts little kids, has tons of merchandice etc. Yeah, It might be that the deeper story lines really doesn't atract younger viewers... You need to watch pretty much every episode, while in old cartoon it didn't matter if you skipped some or didn't watch them in order.

My whole childhood can be summed up with "Ninja Turtles". Hell, I still tie a trash can lid to my back and kick my brother in the face. I shout cowabunga and radical and hum the old theme song and play with the old toys. I love how all the weapons were brown.
If anything, I like the old show more now then I did when I was little. I still love the episode "The Shredder is Splintered" where Krang tells Saki to get on his back, and he hops on him so readily. I think I laughed so hard I threw up. How could you not love that show?

Why is it that whenever someone says that they like the old cartoon better than the new cartoon/Mirage comics/etc., someone else has to try to start a "which is better" argument? Does it really bother those certain people so much that someone prefers the old cartoon? This thread is about the old cartoon, so leave the debates involving the new cartoon out of it before this thread needs to be locked.
Old show was the same as Pokemon are now. Children's kraze for a few years. The only people who compare the old cartoon to Pokemon are people who are jealous of the old cartoon's success, even though they're apparently not aware that without the old cartoon's success, there would be no new cartoon.
People lost intrest after 1990 season, there after the ratings dropped trasticly. Red sky got some ratings back, but there were only 8 episodes per season...Where are you getting this information? I remember the old cartoon being popular at least through the 1992 season. If there were any ratings drops after 1990, they were gradual, not "drastic".
New show won't certainly ever be that popular, even tough the show is technically better. You're right, it won't ever be as popular. But the show is definitely not "better." That's your biased opinion, not a fact.
Karpo_007
08-28-2003, 04:43 AM
When did I start wich is better argument again? By techically better I mean Better animation and Writing. Writing is better due the format of the show, one on going plot instead of a single show format like old TMNT or He-man. And no one can argue about the animation. The fact I like new show better is my biased opinion. Many do prefer the old show, and I have not said there is anything wrong with it.
Like I said, TMNT phenomenom can be very well comapred to Pokemon. Both had a very succesfull children's cartoon and TONS of diffrent merchadice. Didn't you get that from my post? Do you hate Pokemon so much that you think it can't be compared and start saying thing like "you are jealous"? Even if you do hate it, It can still be compared. Don't take it out on me.
And execuse me if my english isn't perfect, I'm not a native speaker. After 1991 the ratings did fall, I probably got it from one of the interviews that are around the web. If you can give more accurate rating numbers, please do.
Is this going to a point where you can't mention old and New TMNT in the same sentance? I have not said there is anything wrong to prefer the old TMNT, I did compare it to pokemon tough, and it seems that is what you are most offened about.

From a technical standpoint, yes, the new show is a step up from the old one. It's more visually oriented -- it makes excellent use of widescreen, and it is slightly animated better than the original cartoon.
But that's where the comparison ends.
I have seen many episodes of the new show now. And to be honest, I have enjoyed them to an extent. But there are just some things you know deep down in your gut, and I know this new show will never hold a candle to the old one. No matter how many incarnations of the Ninja Turtles pop up over the years, the most popular one (and, arguably, the most well-known) will be the cartoon.
As far as what I miss about the old cartoon, let's see. How about, um, everything?

Well people who love the TMNT for the light hearted humour and sometimes even execellnt dialogue between Krang and Shredder will probably always prefer the old cartoon.
I enjoy the deeper end of the TMNT, where they are a real family and so on. And of course Im a big fan of the action too.

When did I start wich is better argument again? You started the argument by saying that the new show was "technically better."
By techically better I mean Better animation and Writing. Writing is better due the format of the show, one on going plot instead of a single show format like old TMNT or He-man. And no one can argue about the animation. The fact I like new show better is my biased opinion. Many do prefer the old show, and I have not said there is anything wrong with it.Just because a show has a continuous storyline doesn't necessarily mean that it has better writing. And the animation may be more advanced, but that doesn't say anything about the character design, backgrounds, etc. Neither of those things make the new cartoon "better" than the old one since that's a matter of preference.
Don't take it out on me.It wasn't that you compared it to Pokemon that bothered me, it was the derogatory tone you used in your post (such as saying that they were both a "children's kraze for a few years"). If you had compared them the way you did in this post, I would have no problem with the comparison.
And execuse me if my english isn't perfect, I'm not a native speaker. After 1991 the ratings did fall, I probably got it from one of the interviews that are around the web. If you can give more accurate rating numbers, please do.I wasn't trying to criticize your English, since it's very clear and easy to understand. I was just pointing out that the ratings didn't drop as severely as you said they did. And I looked through the interviews at NTN and even did some searches, but I couldn't find anything about a ratings drop in 1990 or 1991. I still say that the ratings didn't drop noticeably until after the 1992 season since that's what I remember.
Is this going to a point where you can't mention old and New TMNT in the same sentance? I have not said there is anything wrong to prefer the old TMNT, I did compare it to pokemon tough, and it seems that is what you are most offened about. No, I don't mind if you compare them in another thread, but that's not what this thread is supposed to be about. Wow Krang, I didn't know that was a rule...but it does make sense if the site was originally designed for the old cartoon...why would you go to the site to bash it?
And Tetsu...I've always behaved well, so don't start...

I don't hate the new show, but it presented itself really awful, and the voices seem too unrealistic. A lot of it seems too much like an anime, which drops the ratings down quite a bit, the FOXBOX is known for its crappy animes, and this might turn into one of them.
The old show I actually believe might have attracted a more older audience..but I can't be sure...

Yes the new show does resmble animes, but is far from crappy. The animation is much better than most of the western cartoons today.

LOL, now that was funny! I got a pretty hearty chuckle out of that. :)
Actually, the younger me would have gotten all bent out of shape for someone taking shots at the old show. Now that I'm older and wiser, it doesn't really upset me at all. Everyone knows how I feel about the original cartoon, so why continue to beat that horse to death?
Anyway, thanks for the laughs, Sparvid! That was the funniest thing I've read all morning!

Karpo, animation can't be "better". That is your opinion, better is always an opinion. Just because the new show uses advanced technology to animate, it just means it is using just that...If I still like the old animation better, then that makes what you state an opinion, in which case, you should put "I think" in front of it...So, more advanced you can say, better...no!

I do think better FPS, more detailed and great coreographs make better animation, but maybe someone thinks diffrenlty. So it's my opinion then.
The old show owned but the new show owns too. I miss Cam Clarke's voice most of all and the old theme song, the new song sucks.

Hey people, back on topic.......
I admit I am biased because the old series had so much meaning to me, cause I was young back then. The new show in my opinion does the old show justice, but these are the things that it's missing which should brought from the old show:
1. KRANG- Seriously you can't have a TMNT show without him. He doesn't have to be related to Shredder, just have him another main enemy from Dim X (yes, bring back that too)
2. April as a news reporter- The scientist thing just isn't working for me. Besides as a reporter, it allowed for a lot of different story lines. Hell bring back Channel 6 too.
3. Robot Foot Soliders- Having human foot soliders really limit what the Turtles can do to them when they fight.
4. An actual Turtle lair- As of the last show, don't they have a lair to go home to? They need one place where they won't get kicked out of.
I hate to say it but Rocksteady and Bebop would not fit into the new cartoon, as much as I love them. Oh, and how could I forget the theme song? The new show can't touch that, and maybe they will do a remix of the original a season from now.

They are two different shows that happen to use the same comic book as source material. All the things you mentioned were not in the comic book, hence not in the new show. So, there's a very good reason they're not in the new show.
Still, It's a good list of stuff missed from the old show though. :) And, that's the point of the thread.
I prefer the new show and original comics, but....

Things most missed about the old show eh?
How about... the old show itself?
But more on topic, I definately have to agree with all those posts that mention Krang/Technodrome/Dimension X. All that stuff definately spiced up the show by constantly providing new gadgets and characters to create all kinds of amusing episode plots, as well as preventing the show from stagnating. Without it, TMNT would just be a story of a war between two ninja clans, which would be great, of course, but nevertheless lack something really unique.
a little off topic but... Some of these things could come back in the new show. With the utroms being on Earth there is pretty much an endless supply of fun storylines that could be done in space and even on other planets... Krang or a Krang-like utrom could be introduced, and Dimension X could come in, but I think it would work better as a single planet rather than an entire dimension...

That's what made it great! And, the Utroms, and Baxter, and Savanti Romero "spiced it up", as you say(providing the new gadgets and characters, the way Dimension X did in the old cartoon). So, either way the formula worked.
New or Old, Mirage or TV, It's ALL good! :D

Well after awhile the old show didn't feel to unique. Almost every plot was how to get fuel and/or something else for the TD. But of course, every show loses quality with time. Same is most probably going to happen to the new show to. It's nice that Laird thinks it's good to end the series when there are no new stories to tell.

It's true that with time the episode plots started to get repetitive. And I hope that with TMNT 2003, they'll be able to make a dignified exit when the time is right, to save the show's quality. But in all honesty, I think FOX will take over at that point and insist on keeping it on the air for another 3 years to milk every last possible marketable penny out of it. When it comes to stuff like that unfortunately, writers and creators just don't have any say in what happens.
Karpo_007

True, but fortunately FOX has no power over it. Of course 4kids might want to do the same... I hope that Laird has reserved the rights to pull the plug if thats going to happen.

It's better to end a series when there are no new stories to tell. But seeing how this writing team is doing, that isn't going to be a problem anytime soon.

Very true, even if they decided they couldn't do any more Shredder vs. the Turtles eps next season (for the sake of example) they still have the garbage man, utroms, the demutated monsters, and they can probably do another show or two with that other superhero character... I forget his name at the moment.

I think the old show would attract an older audience.....people that liked the show when they were kids are now older and they would pay more attention to the old show then this new one.

I definitely miss Krang the most. Looking back on the cartoons I grew up on, what really sets TMNT apart from the others is the villains. Ghostbusters just had a new ghost/monster every week, Cobra from GI Joe was just some faceless organization, the Decepticons were just the Autobots with more "evil"-sounding voice actors.
But Krang and Shredder, they had PERSONALITY. Shredder's always been an awesome character design ever since the first comic, so that carried over to the cartoon. No matter how goofy he got, he always looked damn cool. But Krang was unique. Come on, how many other cartoons had a giant disembodied brain as one its main characters? (Besides Captain N :) )
There are only two other big things I miss that the new cartoon doesn't supply:
- The theme song. What can I say, it was a classic, and the visuals that went with it (at least in the early seasons) was one of the most badass things ever. Awesome animation.
- THe foot being robots. The only problem with them being human is there's not much Leo and Raph can do to them weapons-wise. When they were robots, there was definite slicing-and-dicing going on.
