The Turtles' Tastes and Opinions?

I've kind of starting wondering about the tastes and opinions of the turtles, like what kind of things they like and dislike, such as food, movies, music, etc.

I know that the old Ninjaturtles.com had profiles that went into this, but I'm wondering what you all think? Have you kind of generated tastes for each turtle in your mind? Like, what do you think the Turtles like and dislike?

I have a headcanon that Raph likes metal and rap, but I think that's probably based on some of his old character profiles as well.

Ralph eventhough rough and brute, he has a feminine side. He likes knitting, wearing fairy princess costume for Halloween, likes My Little Pony, etc.

My opinion is that Mikey secretly hates being a mutant and a fighter. He just wants to be a normal kid. That's a lot of why he's so lazy and unfocused with his training; he doesn't want to do it at all. He doesn't want his life to be what it is. Whomp whomp. But he mostly keeps these feelings to himself.

I imagine he listens to skater type music, but also pop and anything catchy and uplifting. I also think he'd be super into para para.

Here's a mix of things from the 2k3 version and my personal headcanon.

Donatello loves dinosaurs and prehistoric times, something that has carried over from his younger days and enjoys visiting museums as a result.

His favorite films would have to be The Matrix trilogy and while he does enjoy all the Star Trek shows, he prefers to watch reality television shows or documentaries.

Donatello is a complete and utter bookworm and will go into fan-boy mode when given the chance to do any type of studying, preferring to read factual books over fictional ones yet he has read the occasional comic-book and has some knowledge of them.

Due to resorting to drinking it when he wants to focus on overnight projects, Donatello has developed a liking for coffee and is not fully awake or sociable until he's had his morning cup.

His favourite food is sushi and Chinese even though he tends to vary his diet (eating things like scrambled eggs or nachos) and due to the patient side of his personality, Donatello is the second best cook of his family (following Michelangelo). Though when he's really busy, he grabs quick and easy stuff to eat.

Donatello has a liking for chess-games and sports that require calculating the angles required to move the balls like snooker, pool, billiards or ten-pin bowling. He is also somewhat skilled at riding a bike and can perform basic stunts on one. And as he's a teenager, he does enjoy playing video games when Michelangelo isn't hogging them or the remote control.

Leo is the only other turtle who can fluently speak another language: Japanese.

We know that Mikey loves weird toppings on his pizza, so I sort of always imagined that that carried over to liking pretty much any type of insane food combination.

And speaking of food, I figured that Leo likes traditional Japanese food because it's something that he can share with Splinter. I also imagine Splinter having a hobby like traditional Japanese calligraphy or something that he just does for himself.

None of this is headcanon, it's all true of the Mirage turtles. My bad if that's what you were trying to put across.

In my head canon.

Raph- Despite the occasional beer, is pretty much a health nut. He likes to keep his body in tip top shape from the inside and out. His favorite thing to snack on is cereal. He likes all sorts of music, but favors classic rock and metal (like Rolling Stones, Heart, AC/DC and GunsNRoses.) He is an accomplished mechanic and knows his way around an engine, and tends to read informative stuff over fiction, like Popular Mechanic, Guns and Ammo, the morning paper and watching the news. His favorite movies tend to be military type or action type, like Platoon, Die Hard or Rambo. Despite his tough exterior, he has a soft spot for kids and those down on their luck, and hates it when one of his brothers is feeling blue, especially Mikey, so will do whatever he can to cheer his siblings up. He also feels responsible for their safety and that it's his duty to watch out for them when they are weak, even if he's weak himself.

Mikey-Loves food. He loves to experiment with different dishes from across the continents, if not entire worlds. He tends to like cheese, so his favorite dishes would be pizza, lasagna and stuffed pasta shells. When he's not cooking, his other favorite hobby is writing. He likes sci/fi and romance, and when it comes to reading, he also has a soft spot for the romance novels. Music, he tends to listen to more modern stuff, and likes Rap, pop and hip pop the most. With movies, tends to like goofy comedies like Ghostbusters, Caddyshack and Scary Movie, but also likes to lose himself in a good romance like Titanic, Officer and Gentleman and The Notebook. As with Raph, he also has a soft spot for kids, and he also has a soft spot for animals, and has a natural ability to nurture and heal them. He tends to be the calm one when it comes to family feuds, and is often the one to break them up. He particularly gets along well with Raph and knows what to do to get him to bite back his anger. He is also very welcoming, and has no problem extending the first handshake when meeting strangers.

Donny- There are about as many incarnations of this guy as there is of Raph. But my favorite, is the one that is a sweet guy, but likes to wisecrack when the time calls for it.
Donny is the one I see, what I call the grazer , in that he is so focused on his inventions, or trying to help Leo out on a technical part of a plan, he really doesn't have time to actually get a proper meal, so is often grabbing the already available dinner Mikey has cooked up, or a bag of potato chips or cookies. He likes most stuff, but doesn't like it when it's spicy or sour. I can totally see him practically living off of Red Bull. When it comes to music, I don't know why, but I always seen him as someone who was into the retro stuff. Whenever I hear Wham on the radio, Donatello comes to mind, so I always had that as his favorite band. Donny is not much into TV or movies in general, but tends to like similar movies that Mikey does. He's not much of a fan of the super violent stuff like Raph is. Donny is mostly a pleasant guy to be around, and while he tries to welcome most newcomers, he's more reluctant to extend his hand out for a shake. He'll stand back a bit behind his other brothers, not so much that he's afraid, it's just he doesn't like to be in crowds and near strangers he doesn't know. But, he is always willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Out of all of the Turtles, I do see him crushing on a girl the most, either be it April, Irma or someone else down the road, but either way, he would never close the door on that option.

Leo-I got quite a few head canons. Mostly because, well, he's too perfect and dignified, so he has got to have skeletons in his closet, or, in my mind, at least a secret stash of playboy locked away somewhere.
His food of choice, I see him mostly a clean eater. In other words, he prefers something that is fresh as can be, and he is probably leaning towards being a vegetarian. When it comes to music, this is the guy I see actually liking the more melody types over lyrics. But for some reason, I see him as a fan of Tatu as well. Not sure why. Maybe it has something to do with the fan vids on youtube. Reading, he loves to read Mikey's stuff, and is probably Mikey's biggest fan. Bugging him about what's going to be the next novel or story and enjoys tossing ideas and feedback to Mikey. While he enjoys reading what Mikey reads, he enjoys watching the stuff Raph watches, and probably has the closest bond to Raph out of his brothers. Raph is usually his sparring partner, and they both play well off of eachother. Donny now, he shares the feeling that they don't want to be alone for the rest of their lives, that they both share crushes with women that they will never be able to see through, so they kind of talk about it during a good game of chess or Battleship. But, Leo is not without a hidden darkness to him. He stresses alot about being the leader and the fear his leadership will be the death of one of his brothers, so he probably tends to do some not so healthy stuff dealing with that stress, like cutting or unnecessarily picking a fight with Raph or Casey to vent out his frustrations. And, he gets along more with Casey then he wants to admit, via certain internet adventures!:D

I like to think Leonardo can make weapons, but I don't think they've ever bothered to attempt to explain where they get replacement weapons. Really they probably all should be able to, or at least each be able to make certain ones. Kunai sharpening is probably part of training etc.

I know in the 1990 movie Raph didn't like the movie Critters. I think he even said "Where do they come up with this stuff?" after he walked out of the theater.

That's the only one that I know of that's 'canon,' and it's a comment on a real movie.


I think 2012 Mikey would like that movie, I think he'd get a kick out of the Crites and would be fun to watch it with. :D With Raph though, I think he'd just end up calling the movie 'dumb.' :/

I can't remember if it was in Mirage or what, but after Leo gets his beat down, there is a little tidbit when he was healing, Raphael helps him make his swords, which were broken by the Shredder. But I would assume all the Turtles would know how to make weapons.

In my Jephaeverse stories, I tend to stick closely to what was shown in the original cartoon, but I take some creative liberties with the Turtles. Raphael is a bit more emotional due to his relationship with Mona Lisa. He'll listen to any love ballad from the 1980s. He's still smart-alecky though, and enjoys watching Comedy Central and Adult Swim programming. Michaelangelo has a bit of a chip on his shoulder after getting dumped by Kala, so he spends most of his time skateboarding and listening to Green Day. When he's in a good mood though, he'll listen to Bon Jovi. Donatello is a history buff who likes to watch documentaries about our country's past. His favorite era to learn about is the 1960s. Leonardo is a very zen individual who accepts change and enjoys listening to Johnny Cash and Elton John.

I actually agree with all of this. However, I'd add to it with Leo doing origami as a hobby- probably as a way of practicing patience and dexterity as well as focus. Mikey's love of food in general had me come up with an idea of him experimenting with cultural fusion between Japanese and Italian cooking, to create his own recipes. As far as Donnie's taste in music, I can see him also listening to techno and electronica, and perhaps some show-tunes, as well. Leo strikes me as the country and adult contemporary type, lots of Johnny Cash, Elton John, Alabama, Genesis, and Neil Diamond. Middle of the road type stuff, basically. He also has a taste for traditional Japanese zen type music, and loves historical movies like North and South, Shogun, and Pearl Harbor.

Mikey seems to be the ultimate 80's buff to me, both in music and movies, and probably listens to a lot of old punk, pop, metal, and classic rock, as well as old school rap or R&B. Probaly loves older comedies and horror movies- Ghostbusters, the Nightmare On Elm Street movies, Caddyshack, and the like. Raph is a metal-head no doubt, into grunge rock, and maybe into some hard-core rap, too. But he secretly enjoys listening to softer stuff, too, like Simon and Garfunkle, or possible Kenny Rogers. I'd say he likes action movies- I see him as a big Die Hard fan, and maybe anything with Arnold or Sly. He probably likes watching motocross events or wrestling on TV, and the news.

One of the plot holes I noticed in 2k3 is that Mikey and Raph are taking the mickey out of Donatello's dinosaur obsession in "The Return of Savanti Part I". However, in a later episode (think it's "Tempus Fugit"), Mikey mentions that he used to love dinosaurs. Perhaps he meant as a very young child.
