So I kind of have to ask, why does David Wise lie about his importance to the franchise?

It seems like he could easily just say "My writing helped the franchise become a world wide phenomenon", and that would be a great honor for him to claim. But for whatever reason, he just keeps taking credit for things that were already there in the comics or decided upon at Playmates.

The personalities of the Turtles? Maybe not as clear in the early issues of the comics but still there.
The comedy? The comics had comedy, maybe a bit raunchier and less frequent but still there.
Bebop and Rocksteady? Created for the toyline with rather vague personalities and fleshed out over time, not by Wise alone mind you.
And the less I call ******** on his creation story behind Krang and the Technodrome, the better.

He did create their more recognizable traits to the general public. Michaelangelo wouldn't constantly be portrayed as the "party dude" and have a surfer voice in all the following cartoons if it wasn't for the OT.

He did essentially create their characters. Remember its their DESIGNS that Playmates or Laird created. But they were still just a generic rhino and warthog mutant with no character. David Wise created the personalities for them and made them actual characters.

Krang the same way. He might have been based on an Utrom, but Wise created everything about Krang, including Dimension X, the Rock Soldiers, the Neutrino's, etc.

pretty sure townsend coleman and the voice director had more to do with the surfer voice than david wise.

He was still written that way with all the "dude" and "cowabunga" and "mondo cool" expressions and traits. David Wise wrote hi based on that though

Wise exagerates a lot. He did create some things, but he didn't "help the franchise reach fame". Playmates, Kevin, and Peter all did a lot more then him.

Krang the same way. He might have been based on an Utrom, but Wise created everything about Krang, including Dimension X, the Rock Soldiers, the Neutrino's, etc.

See the thing about Krang is that Wise claims he was not inspired by the Utroms until the final stage. No really, I saw his interview with Michelle Ivey (did I spell that right?) and in the interview he claims to have created the alien brain creature in a robotic body before seeing the Utroms, he claimed that the Utrom inspiration was just an aesthetic afterthought. He pretty much only seems to mention the Utroms because Ivey brings it up when he's almost finished with the story.

I find this story to be... Questionable to be honest, you don't just recreate the same basic thing by accident when adapting a story, especially as he claims to have read it personally.

Maybe it's wrong of me but given his history of questionable and outright false statements, as well as his generally cliché and recycled writing (implying a lack of creativity), I have a really hard time believing much of what comes out of his mouth. I believe it's more likely Playmates gave him guidelines and concepts to follow rather than have him be the driving creative force as he claims.
