View Full Version : Can someone explain to me April and Kirby's backstory?

It seems like every episode we get a new "reveal" of April and her father's backstory with the Kraang. Yet all the older aspects seem to be forgotten about as if the writers are making things up as they go along.
Can anyone make a chronological timeline of all the events dealing with April/Kirby and the Kraang? How they came to be, why is April considered half mutant, etc?

I don't even think the writers know what they're doing with this story arc any more.
April's family have been linked to the Kraang since the 1910s, and were experimented on by them. The perfect sample of mutagen came in the form of April. To capture her, the Kraang created a creature who looked like her mother to try and trap her.

This is what I am getting from it.
The Kraang arrived on Earth back around the time of the dinosaurs or just after the end of the Dino's reign. And experimentally mutated apes enabling the evolution of apes into humans.
The Kraang kept experimenting on humans causing them to evolve into who we are today.
One ship of Kraang crash lands in the area where the 'O'Neil Farm' would be built later and is eventually discovered by April's Great Grandfather. He accidentally freed the Kraang that were living in stasis inside the ship.
The Kraang repaid him by experimenting on him and found his bloodline was the one they were looking for. So they experiment further with his children, and grand children. Of which Mrs. O'Neil may have been one. All we see is a little girl who is possibly April's mother as a child, unless this is Kirby's sister.
We know April's mother had been experimented on before April was born, but we don't entirely know when so this maybe it.
Years later Mrs. O'Neil meets Kirby and eventually April is born we don't know if Kirby is really April's father...Perhaps they pull a star wars and say April doesn't have a father, she was conceived by budding. The two of them know or realize that she is special and know that Kraang will be after her because of this specialness. So they hide out at the farm house and other places trying to hide their child from the Kraang. And they are able to avoid the Kraang until April is six years old.
One night they are found and the two of them grab a sleeping April and attempt to escape. Mrs. O'Neil is grabbed forcing Kirby to escape to the city with April.
April lives in the city with her father for the next 10 years until the Kraang find her and her father and abduct them. Leading to them meeting the Turtles.
Some weeks or months later, April is warned by her father that the Kraang are doing something horrible. The Turtles attempt to rescue him but he is recaptured so the Turtles can get April to safety. This is the last time we truly see Kirby.
Kirby at this point it is hard to tell if he is truly Kirby. A good head cannon is that Kirby is an infiltration experiment. And the only reason it had captured April was because it was instructed to wait for the invasion, and the Turtles were preventing him from carrying out his mission.

I think your theory is pretty plausible, VA, and makes a lot of sense regarding this whole thing. But it does make me wonder if Kirby is April's true father and if her mom is still alive and well or if she perished. Before "Buried Secrets" aired I had a theory that April's mom sacrificed herself so that Kirby could take April to safety.

Like I said it's a good headcannon, just not a great one believe me I did consider the mutation thing.
Some probabilities are that Kirby is an infiltrator beast but he had enough human DNA to mutate which is why he was hit with the mutagen.
Another probability is that he is human, but he hasn't forgiven the Turtles for his mutation and/or any further brainwashing from the Foot/Kraang clan. So his intention was that he would betray the Turtles to the Kraang in exchange for April's safety.

You know what. What with the new cartoon the Turtles are watching, being pretty much a blantant rip off of Star Wars, I can see that April might be some "chosen one" and APril's real mom might have placed her with Kirby, who is not really April's dad, but just a surrogate. She's probably going to have a twin sibling out there too in the end (hint, hint, we might have been seeing him the whole time, and he even painted a picture of he and April that looked alot like a Star Wars poster) So, that's my theory now until proven otherwise.

Not really buying Kirby as a Kraang infiltrator. If he was, why did they need Kraang Sub-Prime to discover the lair? Kirby was there when they were partying at the end of S1. He knows where it is and could have told Kraang anytime.

Wow, you guys REALLY want Kirby to be bad, don't you? I kid, I kid. Seriously, I do sort of wish the writers would focus a bit more on the continuity of this show.
In the beginning of season 1, the Kraang were kidnapping scientists to help perfect the mutagen.
Halfway through season 1, we discover April has special "sensing" powers and the Kraang are targeting her.
Season 1 finale, she has some special mental link to the world and the Kraang need her mind to help conquer it.
Season 2, we find out April has a special strand of DNA and that her mother was kidnapped by the Kraang.
Then we find out that April IS part Kraang.
Later we find out she has some weird psychic blast/sonic scream connected to her Kraang DNA.
Sesaon 3, the bloodline on April's MOTHER'S side of the family has been tested on by the Kraang for years.
While trying to escape, April's mother was kidnapped and is currently MIA.
I really do NOT want to be a Douchy McNitpick here, but I think the writer's should have toned down the whole "April being part Kraang" thing. Having her bloodline be involved is sort of what's confusing this whole thing.
I - and many others - have come up with the theory that April's mother was a Neutrino from Dimension X. This is my take on the theory:
That April's mother is Kala (from the original show); a Neutrino freedom fighter who had been at war with the Kraang for years. In an attempt to thwart their plans of multi-dimensional domination, Kala and her colleagues attempts to shut down the portals linking Dimension X to other worlds. In doing so, however, Kala gets thrown into our Dimension and is trapped there. Fortunately, Neutrinos look very similar to humans, aside from their pointed ears. So Kala creates an alias for herself, gets surgery to change her ears, and passes as a human. (Don't ask how. Maybe she befriended Jack Kurtzman or something like that).
She becomes a quantum physics scientist in the hopes of creating another portal that would not only send her back home, but can only be used once so that the Kraang will not be able to use her portal. But that gets put on hold when she meets Kirby and she falls in love with him. Eventually, she decides that maybe creating another portal would only cause more problems and instead wants to live out the rest of her days on Earth as a human. So she gets married, has April, and is perfectly happy....
Until she sees one of the Kraang "Norman" suits while she's out with April. She's able to allude them, but then one of her old Neutrino fighters (Zak) tracks her down and tells her how the Kraang have taken over Dimension X and have rebuilt the portals. Not only that, but Kala knows that April has special psychic abilities linked to Earth, which would make her a huge target to if she were to remain with her family. In other words, the Kraang don't know that a Neutrino-human hybrid exists yet and in order to keep that from being discovered, Kala has to cut off all ties to her family.
With Zak's help, she fakes her death and returns with him to Dimension X, hoping that the Kraang never discover her daughter.
Ok, maybe a BIT far fetched, but without sounding too pompous, this looks like it flows better than what the writers are currently doing. They clearly don't want Kirby hanging around since he turned out to be such a bland character.
And maybe Kirby sort of blamed April's mother on the whole Kraang thing when he discovered her ties with them. That's why Kirby never brought her up with April. That...makes him a pretty despicable person, doesn't it?

Or maybe it makes him a little more complex but hell if we know because unless you're a mutant turtle, Karai or Splinter, your perspective is not going to be shown.

I like the idea of April's mother being a Neutrino, I've actually thought that since it was first brought up as a possibility, though I kinda hope she isn't Kala, though I really do want Kala to show up, she was always my favorite Neutrino, I had such a crush on her when I was little. Loved when she showed up in the IDW comics, especially as such a badass.

The Kraang arrived on Earth back around the time of the dinosaurs or just after the end of the Dino's reign. And experimentally mutated apes enabling the evolution of apes into humans.
The Kraang kept experimenting on humans causing them to evolve into who we are today.
While that does sound possible, there there are some very strong possibilities that the Kraang have been lying too, especially about playing their part of the genesis of mankind, especially if you think about it. The reason I say this, is that the pictures that Kurtzman has only go back to Egyptian times, but there is no depiction of them in cave pictures and early mid Stone Age, of which certainly would have existed had they been there longer. Also anything that has been changed with mutagen tends to double mutate once re-exposed to more of it later, and if humans were the products of the Kraang fooling with mutagen, they should double mutate instead of just showing the results of a singular one. Normal animals show this same trait, and the Kraang never supposedly experimented with them to the same extent they claimed to do with humans.
Plus, another bit of evidence is that they are in the suits, and 'hiding.' In Egyptian times they were out in the open. What happened between then and at least 500 years ago? They could have stayed out in the open, visible, since they have had have the technology to suppress any uprising. Why didn't they do so?
They also didn't 'need' to be around millions of years, since they already were capable of knowing what strand of DNA they needed. They could have 'built' one from scratch and saved themselves the time. They also have advanced computers that can do things ours can't, so why did it take them that long?
Lastly, they found the O'Neil family in the early 1900s and started experimenting on them. In just four-five generations of this family they managed to be able to change their DNA to 'match' this proposed strand they needed. If they were on the Earth 'at the dawn of mankind,' then they would have already accomplished this close to the time they started.
What I think happened is that the Kraang only showed up/discovered Earth's dimension 'recently' in early Egyptian times, and the Egyptians ended up thinking they were gods. The Kraang, knowing that they intended to invade anyway, encouraged this as it might have been amusing to them and provided willing subjects for testing and experimentation. Their early experiments showed that their mutagen was not working the way they wanted it to in this dimension, so they sought to add something to it to make it work 'perfectly.' They figured out that a strand of DNA with it's four base pairs arranged a certain way, would change the mutagen so it could work in this dimension. But something major threatened them in the past that drove them 'underground,' forcing them to hide and only daring to take a person here and there secretly, and not openly like they once did. They lucked out with the O' Neils building their house in the boonies and coming across that old ship, since it allowed them to work on a whole bloodline extensively without being discovered.

And vice versa, Kirby never told her about it or tell her to not do things that would expose herself as mutant alien hybrid otherwise she would have never give her spit sample in Alien Agenda.
But anyway, if Kirby knew about April's secret then makes it sense why she was never expose through doctor visit and other things. He just simply never taking her to the doctor.

While I'm really not into Irma all that much but a story that base on a headcanon of how she had been gone away somewhere could be interesting to read.

I'd tried writing up some TMNT fan fiction for Jon_Talbain, but I'd only gotten a page or two done and it's been mostly shelved for some time. It was one about Rahzar, but he's been quite uninteresting for a while so it was hard to keep motivated. I liked him in Shellacne and Lonely Mutation, but now too many times in between he's heavily nerfed and made goofy, often acting too much like a generic 'beast' character. I still like him quite enough to try my life-sized kid deterrent project, but he's been not fun to write about.
Most of the other fanfiction I've done is a Legend of Zelda fanfic that is set in the 80's cartoon, and it's of a person who finds herself in it. Not as some goofy fangirl that gets a crush on Link, but as an irreverent mean-spirited person who goes in, but still expects and treats the 'cartoon' universe like it's still the goofy 80's cartoon on TV. This includes being rude to people and not taking things seriously, and thinking it would be epic lolz to tick off Ganon (an extremely dangerous thing to do) fully expecting him to be the semi-ineffective bumbling 80's villain that's on TV.
The other fanfic I'm working on is solely based on the cover of Star Wars: Red Harvest (the prequel to Death Troopers.) I didn't like the story that was in the book (it didn't match what was on the covers) so I sort of made one of my own that did. It involves the idle contemplations of a lone Sith Master, who had performed a gruesome Dark Side ritual to cheat death (it made him into a zombie.)
That's the stuff I'm working on, so far anyway :D

I'm a TMNT fanfic writer and I have a few of my fics listed in my signature if you are interested in reading them Lucky Day. Hostage and it's sequel fics Reclaiming and Broken are my most popular and someone on deviant art commented that someone should do a graphic novel version of that fic.
My current project is a fic called shattered which focus on what Nick should be doing which is having the Turtles,April, and Casey dealing with the fact they are orphans now and they have suffered a real major defeat, and one of their own is seriously wounded and possibly dying.
Here's a small excerpt
Of the Turtles only Raph and Donnie were still awake. Mikey was curled up against Raph's body taking comfort in his brother's presence. Raph would just watch baby brother as he slept, softly rubbing his hand in comforting circles along Mikey's arms or shell. Other times his eyes would get this distant look of determination that someone had to be the strong one for the sake of his family.
Donnie on the other hand remained by their wounded brother's side throughout the trip. Often he would worriedly watch their older brother all the while holding the family picture of Splinter when he had been human with his late wife and Miwa back when she had been sweet and innocent...before she had become Karai. Every so often the purple masked turtle would try and occupy himself by checking Leo's pulse just so he could confirm for himself that his older brother was still alive, obsessively readjusting the army blanket that he had draped over Leo in an attempt to keep him warm. And when he wasn't doing that he would look through the medical supplies in the red tool box he used as a first aid kit and also the stuff in his messenger bag as if to confirm for himself if he had truly brought everything needed.
Raph had closed his eyes in an attempt to try and get some sleep when he heard the tell-tale squeak of Donnie's med-box, and the cautious rustle of their current de facto leader cataloging its contents.
"Donnieā¦" The Red-masked turtle asked trying to hide any irritation in his voice. "That's the fourth time you've checked your med-kit in the past hour. If you're missing anything, wouldn't you have noticed by now?"
"Sorry," Donnie said in a defeatist tone as he closed the med-box and set it aside.

Yeah, I going through a similar situation with mine but with April. I'm not sure if I should still try to set sometime during season 2, or if I should try make fit sometime after season 3. Also, I'm trying to make it feel realistic of how people would act in the given scene and but whats really stopping me was that I don't know how to end the scene.
The scene is where Donatello sees April's house for the first time (or maybe first time in a while), and house's itself has no running electricity or water (due to unpaid house bills), is dirty and full of dust which tells us, the audience, that the house in New York had been neglected for a long time and is suppose to reflect April's inner depression and denial of her father being gone and mutated. All of this was suppose to head towards a painful discussion of "Hey Donnie, are you done fixing that retro-mutatgen yet because I just might lose my house."
But she so reluctant to talk about it, because while she feel grateful about what he's trying to do but at the same time she only wants to hear if he had created the retro-mutatgen and not about how she's feeling. Because talking it will only show that she's still bitter and might diminish her faith that she will see her father again, which to her will set her over edge and drive her friends away.
For Donnie, he looks at her home and starts to wonder how little he knows her as a person. He sorta brush it off thinking that have to been some times she talk about herself with him and then goes to wonder why she had never come to him for house repairs.

That's another thing! We are staying at April's house, the plots are almost all revolving around her, but yet, we still don't know anything, about April herself. What her hobbies are, her favorite food, how she views each Turtle. She writes what they are doing, but it would be nice to see how she views each Turtle. Maybe a quick paragraph or two. Maybe there could be a scene where Raphael or Leonardo are exploring the place, and they come to April's bedroom and start to look at an old photo album, and kind of realize, as different as their species is, they still tend remember the family/good times in their photos and pictures, and not the bad stuff.

Or if the episode centers on a particular Turtle she explains some of the things that were going on during the three months that Leo was unconscious. Such as maybe in the Speed Demon episode having April write about how they had a rough patch with Donnie during the first few weeks they were living there. He kept blaming himself for what happened to Leo and would hardly eat or sleep. He'd spend his time drifting around the farm looking for something anything that needed fixing. April maybe giving some insight on her thoughts since she was there for the final part of the argument. Maybe saying that Donnie and Leo have always been close and she hopes Leo is able to pull through because if they lose Leo she's afraid Donnie would be lost to them as well.

I think it would be better to try at Season 2 personally, as Season 3 is still a wildcard as to what will be going on there. Season 3 will have people concerned with the Kraang and thus nobody would be concerned with unpaid rent for a while. (I looked up the rental rates for NYC apartments and they are high, maybe about $1,200 a month thereabouts. (unless you are willing to live with a roomie, then it's about 600.)) But I imagine that since Kirby was gone for a while before the beginning of season 1, I think April's family would have been helping out. She wouldn't be able to get a full time job to pay the bills, and I doubt they would leave her to flounder especially with the emotional toil of her dad missing added to it. I'm thinking maybe have the apartment paid up by family, but April still feels reluctant to stay there because the dust and neglect from her time in the sewers evokes too many bittersweet memories of happier times? Throwing out a few ideas, take or leave as you will :)
Sorry if I'm a bit disconbobulated, I've just gotten home from work and had my first meal in almost 24 hours, so I'm not thinking well tonight :P
I think the major issue that I have with Rahzar is that on the show, he doesn't feel much like 'Bradford' anymore. What I mean by this, is that Splinter is Hamato Yoshi underneath, a real man stuck with his mutated body. He doesn't often act like an actual rat, but he still shows a conflict on occasion because he doesn't want to 'lose' himself to the mutation. He doesn't even call himself Splinter, which is his 'mutant' name, but Yoshi.
With Rahzar, the only times he's sort of showed this same thing was when he was Dogpound and in those two Rahzar episode I'd mentioned, which was Shell Acne and Lonely Mutation. He was a man in his mutated body who also didn't want to lose his humanity. He didn't want Mikey calling him 'dog' in Acne, and would have flipped out on Baxter if Baxter hadn't quickly backpedaled when he accidentally called Bradford a dog. He had a commanding presence that was intimidating, something they make him lose when he's goofy and a generic beast guy.
I want to make him that way, but it feels 'fake' and AUish if it's not in the show much.
Not really buying Kirby as a Kraang infiltrator. If he was, why did they need Kraang Sub-Prime to discover the lair? Kirby was there when they were partying at the end of S1. He knows where it is and could have told Kraang anytime.
He's a bit forgetful. Or maybe he deliberately held the info in.

Maybe Kirby is slowly becoming the mask.

I honestly believe Aprils real mom is out there, and that she'll be found, if anything, at the series finale

I, too, believe that she's out there. Out there. She's out there. So is Kirby, her real father, he's also out there. He's out there. Somewhere out there. April will someday find them all, all of them, like in one of those Waldo books, where you look forever and you can't find him, but he's somewhere out there. Let me tell you something now. I believe. I believe Kirby, April's mum, all of them, they are all out there.
