Now that we have gotten a good feel for Seth who do you think has done the best job voicing Leonardo so far?

What about other cartoons/movies, like Cam Clarke, Michael Sinterniklaas (my favorite), James Arnold Taylor, Johnny Knoxville and Brian Tochi.

But out of the choices, Jason Biggs. I'm just not feeling Seth as Leo.

Nick section = Nick topics.

Biggs gets my vote. He made Leo a bit awkward & unsure, which I looooved for him as a character. I miss that. Dom was awesome once he got his footing, though he didn't quite have the same chops as his peers, which unfortunately made him stand out a bit. Seth is a good voice actor but he always sounds like Seth... or a late night cartoon persona. I'm enjoying him more as his pitch lightens, but I think I'll always prefer them in order of appearance, ultimately.

Jason Bigg's voice is the best. I can't get used to Seth Green's voice at all.

My least favorite thing about the show when I first started watching it was Jason Biggs voice as Leo. I love Seth. Perfect fit, imo. I only wish they were able to get him from the start.

I voted Biggs because of how much inflection he had in his voice, and how it would frequently crack (seeing as how he's playing a teenager, I found that fitting). Seth's voice has grown on me A LOT...but I still choose Biggs. Gotta love Seth, but I've heard him play a million different characters - whereas this was Biggs' first voice role, so it was fresh-sounding.

What about other cartoons/movies, like Cam Clarke, Michael Sinterniklaas (my favorite), James Arnold Taylor, Johnny Knoxville and Brian Tochi.

It's in the Nick section, so he means in the context of the Nick show only.

I haven't weighed in much on Season 3-related stuff as I'm having issues with it and don't want to spoil peoples' fun with my complaints... but I will say I am loving Seth Green's voice. I think it has a lot more emotion, so I'm digging it.

Just my two cents, YMMV. :tsmile:

It was a hard decision, but I voted for Jason Biggs at last.

Seth Green is very good too, perhaps he just don't had the oppotunity to show so much of his Leo like Biggs had, becase he made just a few episodes so far.

Is it me or does Seth's voice seem a higher pitch in Dad's than it does on TMNT?

I think right now he hasn't had enough genuine Leo moments to fall into the role yet so it's still too early. He's a good actor with a nice range but it seems like he's more suited to Raph at the moment. He's just a bit too gruff at this stage of his journey so until he can become the cool collected yet vulnerable cautious leader I'll have to go with Biggs. Hopefully when the spirit quest episodes air he should be much more Leo like then.

I would of waited till the end of season 3 to do this poll as we only had 5 episodes and Seth is improving a lot.

They all done a great job, I just can't decide yet, so i'm not going to vote till the end of this season (but I expect this thread will end up on page 100 by the time season 3 ends )

I just feel bad for Catrambone. He didn't really have an opportunity to get a good feel for the role; he only got a few episodes in. And, to boot, he was just kind of thrown in there last-minute as a temporary replacement. They knew before they even cast him that he'd be replaced at the start of season 3. I think he did great for what he was given; only too bad that he was tossed in and out like that.

Jason Biggs. He added something to Leo's voice that just fitted Leo's character perfectly. Dominic did a great job and came close, and given more time he would have grown more into Leo's role, he just didn't have the range or versatility Jason had.

I'm still not fully used to Seth's Leo voice. It's good but it just doesn't feel like Leo for me. And the further we get in season 3, the more pronounced this feeling becomes, and I don't know why. Nothing against Seth as he's doing a great job, but I would have preferred Dominic playing Leo's role this season.

I love all three but its gotta be Biggs. He's had so much longer than anyone else thus far & really proved to be an ideal Leo (its an achievement enough that he never reminds you of Jim from 'American Pie'). Really loved Catrambone's brief time as he sounded like Biggs but tougher (Biggs' lack of testosterone was his only flaw, for me). He didn't truly need to be replaced but I guess they wanted a name actor to lead the Turtles. Green has such a distinct voice that he's taking a while to settle in to the part but I think he'll get there eventually. He's got a good voice for the new, battle-damaged Leo.

for now, i say biggs. as mentioned, he did have good inflection and his voice really seemed to fit Leo's character. I like Seth Green, but like powder said, he sounds like seth green. we should just call him robot turtle. i think seth will impove as he grows with the character. i also need more time to get use to him.

I'd have to wait until we get past the injured Leo stage to really judge Seth but I do miss Jason Biggs. He had a lot of nuance and really brought to life a side of Leo we rarely ever see. His youth, his dorkiness, his ego, his humor, his affection, his confidence etc. It felt like you were listening to and watching a boy become a man and personally I always thought a TMNT story should have traces of being a coming of age story. Biggs really set a great tone for that.

IndigoErth
11-16-2014, 11:48 AM
Pains me a little to say it because no offense intended to Seth, but Biggs... and probably simply for the fact that it was the original voice for this series and automatically accepted as such.

I will hopefully get used to Seth at some point, but this is gonna take a bit. I hope by the time they are back to NYC and Leo is back on his A game that maybe it will have settled in.

Dominic, the temporary guy, did pretty good and was in the neighborhood of sounding like Biggs. Only thing I didn't like all that much is that he sounded a bit too flat in comparison, at least to my ear.

At the very least, the movie having to go and decide to screw with who voiced Leo at least had me already prepared to deal with the change on the tv side. (Because at least it's not Knoxville...) Even if that's pretty trivial first world problems to deal with. But hey, it's the Turtles, this is serious business. lol

I feel it's too early to say. Biggs got to do a lot of lighter material and nerdy comedy, whereas so far Seth has only really played the guy recovering from the beating of his life. if I were choosing who impressed me most so far it would be Dom because of his high level of fill-in quality, but the role was never really 'his' so I don't give him the nudge.

BubblyShell22
11-16-2014, 04:04 PM
Definitely Seth Green for me. He's really come into his own as Leo despite only starting out in season 3. I feel he should have been given the role from the start, but there you go. Yes, Biggs was fine, but I was never a fan of him personally and never felt he fit the mold for TMNT. Dom was good the further he got in, but his time was short-lived at the most. He did do good in the video game though. So, yeah, it's definitely Seth for me.

evan2000
11-17-2014, 10:13 AM
Jason's voice (and Dom's close approximation of it) fitted Leo's immature personality we all knew and loved since the series premiere up to The Invasion, while Seth's voice fitted the more matured Leo after The Invasion, especially since it really made Leo sound like he's still recovering from an injured throat.

But as of now I miss Leo's immature personality more than his matured self, so I voted Jason for voicing the majority of episodes before Season 3 started. By the time we listened to Seth in as many episodes as Jason/Dom eventually, if we have another vote opportunity, I might change my mind.

Haven't marked a vote to be honest. Wish Biggs had worked out long term, but he's proven to be such an ass, not sure I can dignify it with a vote... maybe if the option was narrowed down to "Biggs' vocal cords." (If that's a bit petty, so be it. :P)

That's stupid. The actors personal life doesn't matter. The only reason the whole thing blew up was because dick head TMNTMaster linked his Twitter to the official Nick one. Hopefully he got fired too.

It'd be great if TMNTMaster got the boot too, given that there wouldn't likely have been an issue if children hadn't been directed to a twitter feed not designed for them.

But...I've got to support the "Not Separating an Artist from Their Work" thing. Goodness knows shows like "Justified" and "Firefly" and "Chuck" are forever tainted for me because of the twitter antics of some of their supporting cast members.

*shrug* To each their own, though if a person proves to be a jackass like that by nature I'm not too inclined to care to associate much with them after that. Doesn't matter if it's an actor or a cashier who's line I've learned to avoid if possible.

No, it's not stupid. If you're representing a big company like Nickelodeon you should act accordingly and Biggs didn't do that. If it wasn't for his Twitter antics, I would have been fine with him, but those heartless posts really made me hate him and not want him associated with a franchise I'm passionate about. It's no different in any regular job where you have to watch what you post online because employers and even future employers can find that stuff and choose whether to hire or fire you based on that. It's just common sense, but Biggs didn't care. He deserved what he got, and I'm glad he's gone. That's all there is to it.

Same thing as Biggs and the pie. It's fiction. There's where I feel that separating the artist from the work is appropriate since it was just a role.

Nasty real life character traits however... whole other story. Yeah, Nick really should have taken prior behavior into consideration if they want their actors and others behind their shows representing them better than that since it can't be guaranteed it won't conflict sooner or later.

Side note, after looking up his twitter fiascoes...

Seems kind of unfair not to separate an actor's personal life from his professional one. It shouldn't affect the actual role in question, right? That's like people suddenly hating OT Leonardo because they found out Cam Clarke was gay. I know, not comparable to Biggs' douchebaggery, but that was the only thing I could think of regarding another Leonardo voice actor that some people might not like. Going back to Biggs' situation, you can dislike what the person's done (personal life), but still like the work (professional) he/she has done and I liked his Leo a lot.

Anyway, I can't really vote on this. Seth hasn't been around as long as Biggs, so...I can't fairly say, but I did love Biggs portrayal of Leo. He was really good at doing the voice cracking thing. He sounded very youthful. For Seth now, I think it does suit him, given what the character's gone through. It's like his innocence was taken away from him, so I do feel the more mature voice suits him.

Too bad, there's one line in the recent ep that comes to mind that I really wish Biggs could've voiced, "Am I dreaming you?" Forget it, pretty much everything dealing with the current ep, as it was kind of lighthearted given Leo's dream, "I'm a super hero!" would've nice to hear Biggs do.

I didn't think I liked Seth's voice until I went back and watched some earlier episodes. Wow, it's so different now. I think I'm used to Seth already even though Leo hasn't had all that many lines in the last few episodes. I think the biggest change is that Seth's voice matures Leo a lot. Of course, Leo just got his shell kicked and nearly died so he's going to mature a lot in a short period of time. His innocence has been lost in a sense.

This. I'd be great if I could blind test some people who had never seen the show before. I really think Seth is a better-fitting voice, even though it took an adjustment period for me to get used to it.

And yes. I have a hard time dissociating Biggs personally from the role. I watch Orange is the New Black too and he's my least favorite part of that show too. But at least I can watch new episodes without my mind going back to him talking about 'edging'...Ugh.

There have been raunchy and controversial comedians and actors who have done family-friendly projects. Perfect examples would be the late Jackie Vernon (Frosty the Snowman) and George Carlin (Thomas the Tank Engine). Today's examples would be Pauly Shore (the Goofy movies), Sarah Silverman, (Wreck-It Ralph) and Russell Brand (the Despicable Me films and Hop). However, Biggs crossed the line way too many times over the two years that he did the show. He even mocked the dead more than once. He was given too many chances and Nickelodeon finally had enough. I don't think Seth Green has ever gone as far as Biggs did in social media.

As for his voice on the show I have never enjoyed any of his acting. The first acting project of his I ever saw was Saving Silverman and that was a gigantic beating to sit through. I have always found him to be lifeless in all of his work even on this show.

Seth Green gets my vote because he is an experienced voice actor and he has shown plenty of growth so far on this program. His voice has more of a cartoon feel to it.

If I could 'thumb up' this comment, I would.

It's hard to separate a real life ass from a role they do in a cartoon meant for children. If it was a show for adults, it would be a different story to me.

This isn't the first time Nickelodeon made unwise decisions on hiring people. Take Invader Zim for ONE example. I love IZ (and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac) a lot, but what was Nick thinking when hiring Jhonen Vasquez? Did they think he would stop making violent and gory comics or posts on his private websites if he was helming a cartoon for kids?

I don't blame Nick for ditching Jason Biggs, but they should have known what they were getting and possibly be associated with at the beginning.

As for the topic on hand, I did enjoy Jason Biggs' voice, negativity aside. But it's way too early to discount Seth Green's voice. There's just not enough episodes to gauge whether anyone likes him. After the initial shock and confusion of the voice change, I personally don't mind his voice for one main reason: character development. I love it when cartoons or shows "explain" why changes are made instead of pretending their audience won't notice. Their explanation in this show was Leo got hurt and damaged his larynx. (Though I see it as how others do, he's getting more mature since his innocence was taken away. Not to mention, coming out of a 3 month coma feels like a rebirth. The new voice solidifies this idea.)

Because of that reason, I gotta go with Seth Green. As many fun and cute moments we got with Nickelodeon's Leo, I always view him as the serious and older brother (as he is). Now his voice fits that role. Whether or not Green was the best voice actor choice to pick as an older Leo, I'm still on the fence. It is a step in the right direction for me though. (And that's why I didn't vote in the poll.)

What about other cartoons/movies, like Cam Clarke, Michael Sinterniklaas (my favorite), James Arnold Taylor, Johnny Knoxville and Brian Tochi.

Off topic, but I love Michael Sinterniklaas' Leo too. But I can't help thinking of Dean Venture whenever I hear him now. ^^;

So I just caught another episodes of Dads and Seth's voice is definitely a lighter pitch than it is on TMNT. Maybe it's the isolation of the sound booth or maybe he's using a deeper voice as a character choice as Leo is maturing and is emotionally hurt but his tone on Dads seems much much more suited to Leo. I think if he was Leo from the start and using his Dad's tone he wouldn't seem as jarring as he does now compared to Biggs. So using how he is on Dads as a template for his potential with Leo I have absolute faith that he will come into his own and even surpass Biggs once he has more episodes under his belt and the 'healing process' is over.

I'm really liking Green. His deeper voice leads a more assertive, authoritative tone to Leo, and that's appropriate for a leader. He seems more sure of himself.

That's quite a happy accident, because Biggs's portrayal made sense back when Leo was younger and less sure of himself as leader. Now that he's trying to recover from his beating in New York, as well as maturing as a person, Green's voice seems to fit better.

Okay, so he has the right to say horrible things about tragedies like the Malaysian Airlines disaster and someone's suicide? Sorry, but there's a fine line between what's acceptable and what's not. I don't care if you have your own personal account or what. If you say stupid sh*t like that, you deserved to be fired. Same goes if someone posts nude pictures and then expects to get a job and the employer won't hire you because of your pictures. I have very strong feelings about things like this, and what Biggs said regarding certain tragedies is tasteless and inappropriate. I don't care if he's a comedian or not. You don't cross a line like that, so I'm glad he's gone.

He does. He actually has every right to say that. That's just a fact, plain and simple. No one says you have to like it but he broke no laws saying it. Totally okay if you take what he says or does personally and would rather him be gone, that's well within your rights, but a lot of people don't and will miss his contribution to the show.

He sounded the way I thought they should sound when reading the comic. Maybe a older, but a big difference from all others.

Well, from a promotional point of view, Biggs was hardly ever at any of the events to promote the show while Astin, Cipes and Paulsen were regulars, so I have a feeling alot of this part of the world is another reason why Biggs was canned. Look, there was a pic of Paulsen and Whitman smiling at the camera, and it could have been such a cute picture, but then Biggs had to screw it up by posing in the background and flicking a bird.

He does. He actually has every right to say that. That's just a fact, plain and simple. No one says you have to like it but he broke no laws saying it. Totally okay if you take what he says or does personally and would rather him be gone, that's well within your rights, but a lot of people don't and will miss his contribution to the show.

No, he doesn't have the right to be hateful to people. No one deserves that type of behavior, and he's a prick, so I'm glad he's gone. You can believe what you want, but if you believe that it's perfectly acceptable for someone to be so horrible and to make fun of people's deaths, then you are a very sad human being.

Seems obvious to me that Nick felt the best way to go was to not have him out there promoting the show once the controversy hit. Obviously it would have continued to bring unwanted negative attention and distract from it so he did the voice over work he was hired to do and that's it.

And that picture was a personal picture of I'm not mistaken. Who cares? Some of you guys take things so personal its really weird.

Freedom of speech doesn't include a right not to be called out on it.

He may find such joy in ruffling other's feathers and making jokes over tragic events... but the real tragedy is how blind he is to how much he's laying waste to his own self in the process.

Fair enough statement. Biggs has unfortunately become like one of those things that in many cases shouldn't even be brought up, like politics and religion.

Dominic Catrambone... I could tell in most cases, the inflection (is that the word I want?) just wasn't quite as...diverse? Strong? But he did pretty good though otherwise.

Gunstar_Red
11-22-2014, 12:05 AM
Now that I look at his bio, Catrambone doesn't have much of anything pertaining acting experience. He did both Nick TMNT games and 4 other unrelated games. It seems like this was his first tv show role? Wow. Well, good for him! Being a newbie in a role for an iconic franchise is major props.

The question is, why didn't Nick just keep him? He would've been cheaper to pay than either Biggs or Green. He would have grown into the voice or have enough practice to sound more natural.

That's why I'm seriously thinking Leo was meant to have a change of voice between seasons. Nick just decided to go with a different actor, which happens a lot in cartoons actually. (More than often for singing parts or age differences that the original actor doesn't have the right range for.)

Edit: Nevermind. He does have more than a handful of roles, but it's still not much. He started acting in 1999, but nothing "notable" until 2003. He did mostly videogame work. Then he got another tv show role for 52 episodes. ("Galactik Football"? Never heard of it.) More voice parts in videogames after that. Then his substituting in TMNT. Interesting...

Seth is starting to sound more Leo like from the last episode. His voice definitely sounds best in his emotional and leader like moments, I still have hope his conversational tone will be more Leo like as well by the time the Spirit quest episodes air.

With Biggs, he may have the right to say whatever he wants but he must also pay the price for what he says. There is also a line to human decency that most people don't cross out of respect for their fellow man. He did. Clearly he doesn't have it. Being he is representing an influential character on a show aimed for kids he should also know better. The firing is the least of the price he should pay.

Imagine what a family member of the Malaysian Airline Passengers and of the person who committed suicide would do to him if they had the chance. That's the price he SHOULD pay.

Biggs is my favorite, followed closely by Green, with Catrambone a distant third. Catrambone's performance was a little stilted. It didn't feel as natural as Biggs' or Green's. I don't wanna derail the thread or anything, but the whole Jason Biggs twitter controversy is so overblown. It's not like he said anything bigoted. Who doesn't enjoy a little dark humor? But some things it's hard to ignore. If you have ever been raped, it's hard to get rid of that feeling of helplessness and how you were nothing but a piece of meat, so when there is someone there thinking it's cool to make a mockery of it, or to use it as a comedic pun, trying not to be offended and hurt and trying to brush aside those feeling you are trying to keep pushed back to the back of your brain isn't so easily done.

Hard to choose to be entirely unoffended sometimes, depending what it is, some people like Biggs seem to purposely aim for what will cause the most grief and get off on other's pain. (Honestly I have a slightly hard time even wrapping my head around how people can even be like that.)

Shunning people like this would probably be a far better response... unfortunately though with society at this scale in this day and age and fame being too much of a tool for attention seekers like that, it probably wouldn't work. Would prob require it to come from Hollywood itself and those closer to him, but he's no doubt too surrounded by similar lower forms of life.

Honestly I almost wish he'd get all offended and butthurt and retaliatory over something, just so he could sit and try to fight off the calls of hypocrisy.

Some days I wish fame only ever happened to reasonable, good people who could handle it and earned it....

Dominic did a wonderful job filling in for Jason in the short time he was there. I can't help but wonder why they didn't just stick with him. I could hardly tell the difference between him and Jason and honestly didn't even realize it was another actor untill I stumbled upon it on the wiki one day.

And while Seth does make Leo sound a little older than normal, he's got Leo's personality spot on and I think he's doing a great job playing him. I was a little iffy at first with him (it was hard to hear the true voice since he was playing off the injured throat voice) but It only took 2 episodes to become accustomed to his voice which is amazing to me since I tend to be picky as hell when voice actors change. I also like that they touched on that subject in the show making it even easier to accept the new voice change.

Maybe, but nobody's obligated to apologize. When people get offended, they often forget to take a step back, count to ten, and think about it. Instead, they let their emotions get the better of them, and they get defensive and shout back half-formed retorts. In my opinion, those who were insulted by Biggs' tweets are thin-skinned and maybe a little humorless. I guess some people can't take a joke. Think any who ever got upset about it were connected to the things he made jokes about or can relate? If they're wrong for getting upset after someone like Biggs decides to rub salt into it for his own amusement...skin thickness aside, to be honest that potentially sounds like a form of victim blaming.

As for anyone else, IMO it is more a breach of common human decency that is offensive, not necessarily the exact thing that is said or done.

Considered objectively, it may not be out of question to suggest that Biggs may have a personality disorder.

I think the point is that just because something can be joked about, doesn't mean that it should.

As far as someone choosing to be upset - people have a right to feel bad when somebody says something sh*tty. We don't exist in a vacuum - words have consequences. You can't just say whatever you want and expect people not to have feelings about it - that's just sociopathic.

Call me old-fashioned but I think that comedy should be about spreading joy, not about making others feel bad. If you're only doing something for the express purpose of upsetting people, I'm kind of left to wonder what the hell your problem is. Being offended by something isn't a choice.
Emotional responses aren't something we can pick and choose, they're not something we can control.

How we react to our emotional responses IS something we can control. Confusing the two is, in my mind, a sure sign of unexamined privilege.

Good comedy is an art, and the purpose of art is to elicit an emotional response. It's supposed to make us feel something, and to shine a light on a shared human experience.
I don't know what Biggs said in regard to a plane crash, because I stopped following his twitter long before he made sexist comments about the wives of people in political office. No, they aren't thin-skinned. People have the right to get offended by it and speak out if they choose to. That doesn't mean everyone has to sit back and take what others dish out. They should be allowed to voice their displeasure and stand up for themselves and those who have been hurt by the comments.

They're not victims of off-color humor. Remember what I said about taking a step back before you get defensive? Biggs didn't say anything outright hateful. Sure he made light of tragedy, but that's just tactless, not hateful. The way I see it, there's nothing wrong with tactlessness, nor is there anything wrong with getting offended. That may well be the case but you still have to pay the price. So eventhough you are not 'wrong' in your 'choice of humour' there are still others who will hold you accountable for your how 'choice' makes them feel. You might think it is easy not to react to 'subjective off colour humour' but when you have gone through severe pain and trauma and some one makes light of it because that's their 'subjective' choice don't be surprised about the 'instant gut instinctive reaction' that isn't a choice that breaks that persons jaw or worse. I don't dislike Seth Green's take on Leonardo, but I am taking some time to get used to him. I voted Jason Biggs because he did a superb job as Leo. He had great intonation and inflection and I found his Leonardo so very endearing and when appropriate hilarious. I am missing him. Having said that, I accept Seth and look forward to being able to see his Leo flourish at bit more.

I don't know what Biggs said on Twitter - I've never followed him - or if indeed that was what led to his departure from TMNT, so I'm not going to comment on whether it was offensive / sick humour / pathological need to create conflict or not.

What I can say is my employer has it written into our contracts that they have the right to raise a disciplinary against employees who bring themselves into disrepute using social media, and by extension the company. With today's social media world, there is no separating one's personal life from one's work anymore. Companies use Facebook and Twitter to research prospective employees. If a certain standard of behaviour is expected by an employer then inappropriate comments on social media are taken seriously. It's the world we live in now. Whilst I agree that Biggs made a fantastic Leonardo and have voted in the poll as such (because the poll is about the voice, not the man), there is no reason that he should be above condemnation if his statements have reflected on his employer. If he was sacked as a result of offensive statements he made, then that is the prerogative of his employer.

Biggs got off lightly as far as I'm concerned.

^ This. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Breaking someone's jaw is a choice.
And it's still yet to be confirmed that Biggs is no longer on the show because of his personal twitter account.

Seth Green really is getting better each episode and he is really making the role his own. As I've stated before, what I like about his voice is that it has more of a cartoon feel to it than Biggs's.

Honestly, I have no favorite. You just get used to them over time, if you have a favorite than you'll just hate the others compared to the one you love. Or at least that's how I feel.

Bleh, wrong topic... editing.

Anyway, yeah, I haven't really hated any of them. Will just take me a while to warm up to the change.

Leo could really use a lot more lines lately in some of these episodes, it would help to hear him more, I assume.

I agree with that. Leo hasn't really had a lot of dialogue lately and barely spoke in the latest episode. Hopefully that'll be remedied soon.
