Jonathan Liebesman directed this summer’s “Turtles” pic, which ended up grossing $464 million worldwide, but Paramount wanted to take a new approach and decided to open the directing search.

Well Mr. Green, if you do end up taking this on - dammit man, seek to make it an epic win as a director and for TMNT. One of those surprise wins the industry and critics end up praising. Smack away any hands that want to be ridiculous.

Earth to Echo (which I think may have opened opposite TMNT) was pretty well received so I'll def give him the benefit of the doubt. Besides at one point every director had no or very little experience. Doesn't mean they should be counted out.

Very cautiously hoping so. A relative unknown - be it a director, an author, actor, or whoever - could turn out to do brilliantly. *fingers crossed* (You too, Turtles... you don't have many but you have enough to cross.)
Granted it's still in talks, but I just hope whoever they go with has listened.

I didn't see Earth to Echo so I don't know what to make of this.
I can imagine that given the slim profit margin the first movie has fallen in with a sequel which will require more actors and bigger cg budget they they would put some thought in how to make sure they don't end up losing money with a sequel. I suppose cutting corners in other areas is a start and I'm guessing Mr Green with only one movie under his belt comes a fair bit cheaper than Leibesman.

I think it's safe to say we'll at least get Bebop of Rocksteady regardless of whoever directs it.
Also I'm not sure those characters are really what fans really want. A good movie let's start with that first before shoe-horning in stuff from the Fred Wolf for no reason other than nostalgia for some with their mere presence and wrath in others because they weren't done right.

Yeah, this doesn't really fill me with confidence either. I'm not saying a fresh and relatively inexperienced director can't do great things - of course they can - but it's been made clear that with this particular movie adaptation, the studio and the producers have been calling the shots. I don't think putting in a guy who has very little experience in dealing with the pressures and politics of large studio movies is a good idea - the guy's probably gonna be so grateful to be actually given the opportunity that he's not going to argue with Michael "I'm Rich and I've Been Doing This Longer Than You" Bay.

Okay, I liked the first movie, but I don't want the same f*ckin movie again. Move on & explore. TMNT has loads of awesome characters ready to put on the big-screen. No-one wants more Vern pining for a girl he's never gonna be with and Shredder I'm assuming with a new, more hardcore suit. They already milked that dry.
New hero addition Casey Jones, villain Baxter Stockman and henchmen Bebop & Rocksteady would be perrrfect.

"Work on it" is probably generous. He was hired just before they started shooting and made a push for a few things like The Raid inspired action scenes which seemingly never made it in to the movie or were cut much like his cameo. So basically he worked on storyboarding a few of the images in the intro. That's it. His job was little more than a spokesperson really.
Showing respect would be hiring a big name director, this just smacks of budget cutting for a movie they don't have much faith will make big money.

Who cares if the rest doesn't make sense as long as that one scene is in it.

I'm curious on how they will bring Bebop and Rocksteady in the movie. The Mutagen was built as a cure for some toxin, But we never actually seen the Mutagen tested on humans to see the cure work
Could the movie show the mutagen being tested on two humans? Even though was originally a cure?
Or with the knowledge they got that it turned 4 turtles humanoids, They decide to try it on two other animals, a rhino and a warthog.

I could see Shredder coming back and then being the one who creates Bebop and Rocksteady, After the Turtles defeated him, But it would probably be like the plot of Secret of the Ooze.
Instead of Professor Jordan Perry, Its Baxter Stockman who created new mutants, By tainting the mutagen, and making Bebop and Rocksteady kind of dumb.

But, as far as I know since I can't afford comics right now, it's paired down a bit. Sure they're mutants with enhanced strength and various abilities, but it's not to extreme ridiculousness.
It will be extreme ridiculousness in this movie if they're in it. To counteract the Turtles' invulnerability they'll be huge, whole city block leveling monsters.

Eh, this dude ain't important. They obviously just want a guy who'll work for cheap so they have more money to bring Bebop and Rocksteady to life. Makes sense.
Someone mentioned how Bryan Singer's career "took off" after he did X-Men? That's ridiculous. He'd been famous for five years for doing "The Usual Suspects" and "Apt Pupil". "Usual Suspects" was nominated for a ton of Awards. It won Oscars. THAT made his career. His career took off with NERDS after he did "X-Men". He was considered to be "slumming it" by working on a comic book movie, until it made a bunch of money, is what actually happened. And truthfully, his catalog since X-Men 2 hasn't really set the world on fire, either, until just recently.
Just to put things in their proper perspective. Those movies didn't so much "make him", as they made him really popular with geeks while making sure he'd never come within sniffing distance of an Oscar for another twenty years. Just sayin'.

Agreed. I think the last film would have been ok had they not hit the panic button and did re-shoots which caused a lot of unneeded confusion in the story.
I think Bay was more involved in the last film than we were told and that might be why things went a bit off the tracks do to conflicting ideas. Bay and PD wants a puppet to control and if it fails then they have a fall guy in Green.
If it does well than Bay will step into the lime light as the hero who saved the film by hiring Green.

He was hired due to his experience with family friendly films. Earth to Echo had an ET/Goonies vibe.
But I really hope it doesnt turn out something like Secret of the Ooze, While I enjoyed that film, It was toned down.
I hope they up the ante in the fight scenes and all the action scenes from the first.
The Snow Chase was a huge selling point of the first one, With Bebop and Rocksteady and Krang supposedly in the next one, I would like to see action scenes taking place on the streets of NYC, Rocksteady picking up a Car and throwing it at the Turtles and they dodge it, Bebop putting out some weapon and starts firing, If Krang Shows up, He'll be in a robot body that will grow like 20 or 50 feet tall, and maybe show the Technodrome.

yup Paramount has no respect for the franchise that is the reason they brought Kevin Eastman in to work on it No respect at all.
Yup bc every product that is supported by a celebrity means it is a great product made with great quality and effort.
They brought him on board to get the fandom equivalent of street cred. Don't kid yourself.
I also have to agree.

Um, given that he's done like ONE movie, he wasn't hired for his "experience" doing ANYTHING, just to be clear.
He was hired, rather, because that INexperience makes him cheap.
Keep in mind, I don't care about the guy either way. He's like the least important piece of the movie's puzzle. But saying he was hired for ANY reason other than cost-effectiveness is entirely wrong.

Ugh Secret of the Ooze, all talk and no action, so boring. It is second last in the movies series for me (last one being 2k7).
Let's hope the new one keep, or even better, ante up the action and just go crazy. The snow chase scene was awesome, we should have something more like that. :D

Experience does not equal quality, and the reverse is true as well. Paramount hired him because they liked something about him. There are dozens of other, higher-profile "yes men" they could have hired.
Higher profiles mean bigger paychecks. Even Brett Ratner and McG got bank in their heyday.
This guy has one average(according to critics across the board) kids movie to his name.
They didn't hire him for his unique vision. They hired him to sit in the chair and tell the cameras where to shoot.
Now, just for clarification, I don't know this guy. He hasn't said anything about this yet. Got nothing against him. But he's completely inexperienced and Paramount's track record so far is in the garbage, as far as I personally am concerned.
So there's no "whew least it's not Liebesman" mentality for me. It's "they went from a guy who makes bad movies to a guy who's made one low budget kids movie".
And again, that's just me.

Eh I'unno. I kind of think who directs it isn't very important. I just think it's silly that anyone would think this guy got hired for any reason other than the fact that he'd probably do it for free if they asked him to.

Ah the amazing Dave Green. Love his movies....
wait...
who?
I'm not sure if I disliked the directing of the new movie...
But I know my biggest problem was with the writing (and the overall redesigns of everyone). If we can get a different writer(s), then that would be AMAZING. Unfortunately, damage has already been done to the new origin story. Maybe TMNT 2 will actually star the Turtles and 'lil miss star power Megan O'Neil can take a backseat

As long as there is less Megan Fox than turtles on the screen, I think I can like this movie better than the first.
If B&R are included, I'm hoping they're just as tanky as they are in the IDW comic. That seems like it would fit riiiight into Bay-verse.
Regardless, I don't have any kind of aspirations for this movie. I'm content with what I enjoy in the fandom and this movie doesn't effect that at all.
FlogginMcMurryZombiePizza
12-05-2014, 12:30 AM
Agreed. As I stated before... considering the movie was called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", they were hardly featured and the whole film was a vehicle for Megan Fox.
I saw the Bebop and Rocksteady designs... as long as they are real, I thought they looked awesome.
Whatever the movie becomes, I'm not sweating. IDW and Nick have their **** together so I'm content with these iterations. If we get a good movie some day that would be a treat.

Passive aggressive is a bad look for you champ.
I'm actually pretty optimistic. Earth to Echo was, a kids film, and not great, because it was a kids film.
If they plan to make this even more kid friendly, so be it. It can be a kids film, but still be good.
I watched that fridge film, and it's actually kind of fun. He has a vimeo channel with other shorts, they're actually well done also. Lots of rapid fire dialogue, proper edits, overall it feels professional.
I can see what they see in him. He actually has talent, unlike his predecessor.
Let's see what happens. Bottom line is, things are looking up...for now.
Also, Liebesman isn't returning because he is likely to do TF5.

I'd rather they stick with Liebsman and change the producer. I don't have much confidence in changing directors for sequels as they end up being crap like X-Men 3 for example. But I'll keep an open mind and give Green a chance and maybe watch Earth 2 Echo at some point.

Well, in that example, the prior 2 x-men films were pretty good, and Ratner was a pinch hitter, who sucked.
This might be the reverse. Liebesman hasn't made a single good film.
There's nowhere to go, but up.

On the one hand I'm interested to see where he goes with this. After the last film failed critically and in the eyes of the majority of the fanbase a fresh director could be a change for the better.
On the other hand the last film's biggest problem was the writers not the director and they're coming back so my expectations are still well below rock bottom (to paraphrase Chandler there's rock bottom, then 50 feet of crap, then my expectations for the TMNT 2 script).
As cool as my inner kid thinks it would be to see Bebop and Rocksteady on the big screen common sense tells me it will be a disaster without a bigger budget (something I doubt this film will have, I agree with Leo, this is probably the main reason they're hiring a relatively inexperienced director - he costs less). In an interview Liebesman basically admitted that the reason we got the April O'Neil movie with action scenes featuring the TMNT is because the motion capture made the dialogue scenes just as expensive as the action scenes so they cut out pretty much anything that wasn't needed to further the "plot" along (you know, the unimportant stuff like character development and depth). If they want to add Bebop & Rocksteady to the mix as well then we better pray they have their costs under better control or a bigger budget or we'll be getting April O'Neil 2 with the guys just doing action scenes again.

I just want new writers... this new film was all sorts of WTF.
And I never understood why Shredder was even there... and the whole film revolved around Sacks and O'Neil, the Turtles and Splinter felt like they were fit in just to sell the tickets. Plus the origin story is jacked up so there's no weight to Team Saki vs Team... uhh... self-taught Splinter (no sign of Yoshi? really?).
Different director, fine whatever. But lets get a better story written.

So I looked Through what few movies there are reviews for, by the looks of it he's not a good director (although I would have to make my own judgements to determine that). It seems that we're in for another bad movie if that's really the case.
Then again Steve Barron only has one critically accclaimed movie and it's not TMNT.
Which I feel to be a bit of shame, I was really hoping to get at least one TMNT movie that is legitimately good. Out all five TMNT movies, the best one is really only mediocre, if even that...

I think this is great news. Im a fan of found footage flicks like Chronicle and Cloverfield so Ill have to check out Earth to Echo. It'll be nice to see what his vision brings to the big screen.. Yes, I know Bay is behind the scenes but this will still be interesting. It doesn't matter who the director is as long as Platinum Dunes, Nemec and Applebaum are involved.
This hire is nothing more than a cash play. PD wants to cut corners on costs to increase their returns. Don't think for a second that theyre going to use these savings on the movie in another way. They realize they can put anything out there and people will go see it.
The fact that they brought back the Blue Door writers shows they don't give a crap about quality.

Hmm. Ok. Will watch this space with an open mind. But I will say this...
I don't know Dave Green, but I do know that found-footage movies are not even remotely comparable to New Hollywood Cinema. Basic fundamental rules for camera work, script, editing, getting the best out of actors are irrelevant in found-footage films, so the quality of his existing work tells us nothing.
The most important factor to me is whether or not he cares about the franchise. Is he a fan? What's his experience of TMNT? Is his main contact with TMNT the OT and if so, will he broaden his horizons and research other incarnations? We need someone who gives a sh!t.
For all I know, he respects the franchise. If that's the case then, Dave, congratulations! Good luck to ya. I look forward to your work.
As for Bebop and Rocksteady...
Leibesman was banging on in another interview about the reason the turtles only had limited screen time was a budgetary one. By introducing more CGI characters they are going to either a) have to massively up the budget in order to give the turtles more exposure; or b) have the turtles as secondary characters again. I could deal with that in the first film because it seemed appropriate to introduce them through the eyes of someone relatable, but now it's the TURTLES' TURN to have central focus. I for one am very sceptical of that happening if there are more CGI characters in the mix.
As someone said above, Bebop and Rocksteady will have to be done very well in order to deliver any kind of threat to the turtles and based on the first film I don't believe PD can do it - just look at the design and character of Splinter - a much more important character and a massive fail. Personally I'd rather see the turtles have more screen time and some character development than see another rehash of OT characters. The film will need to be nothing short of amazing to convince me that Bebop and Rocksteady have any place on the big screen.
Promising fans OT villains at this early stage - before a script even exists - is just more smoke and mirrors. Right now I don't want to hear which characters are in it. I want to hear that they will do their best to make a coherent film with a plot that makes sense. All they're doing is pandering to the market that regards the OT as the source material and boasting about a cinematic spectacle (like the snow chase) as if that somehow exempts the movie from any other minimum standards. "We don't need the villains' plan to make sense - we have an awesome snow chase scene...." It just reeks of arse-about-face plotting, building a plot around a concept or character designed to capitalise on the mass-market, rather than utilising a concept or character that genuinely serves and benefits the plot. That's how plot-holes appear. Going public with this information at this very premature stage sets a worrying precedent for how this film is going to be treated.
Not meaning to sound negative - I know a lot of you really want Bebop and Rocksteady. I just want a film that has its priorities right, ie a decent plot where the turtles are the main characters, and character development.
I've never heard of him, but losing Liebesman is a smart call. Nothing against him personally or anything, but his track record is sub-par and this movie was really badly directed, IMO.
I don't have any hope for sequels so long as the same decision-makers and writers are in place, but this...
Paramount wanted to take a new approach and decided to open the directing search.
...gives me a slight bit of hope. I want to hope that Paramount recognizes that this movie was a mess and that they plan going to address that with more than switching directors for appearances' sake. I'd love it if this was just the beginning of a behind-the-scenes "creative differences" thing that slowly turns the next movie into a full reboot with a totally different creative team, but I recognize that's a pipe dream and I'm getting way ahead of myself here. :trazz:
If they're serious about taking a new approach, a reboot is the smart option, IMO. Even a "soft reboot" that recasts the roles, changes the overall look and doesn't get into the origins again (or only does so vaguely), so the audience can either count it as a follow-up or a fresh start.
But either way, losing one of the people responsible for making that movie what it was is definitely a good thing. It's not necessarily a solution, but it's something. And a less "experienced" director can be a good thing. We know Liebesman is basically a studio hack -- sorry, but it's true -- so an up-and-coming independent filmmaker could have the vision that Liebesman lacks. Whether or not that's actually the case, or if it'd make any difference as long as Bay's calling the shots... I'm less hopeful about.
Exactly. And that's also the total wrong perspective to make a movie from, and exactly why this one was such a mess - they were more concerned with cramming in empty fan service than telling a good story. All I want is for them to make a good movie. I don't need Bebop and Rocksteady or pizza or cowabunga or the Party Wagon or the Technodrome. Those things are all fine and well if they compliment a good story, but in this movie that kinda stuff was just a distraction from a bad one.
The only thing I'm looking forward to are some new B&R toys in the movie toyline. Thats if playmates even considers making another wave after how badly the first one performed.
Did the movie toy line do badly? I hadn't really followed it. But that could definitely trigger some creative changes in itself...

This movie is a sequel to a crapstorm. Of course it has a lot against it from the getgo. I do not envy this guy. It will take a lot to get the bad taste out of people's mouths and make this a good movie and yer somehow make it seem like a sequel to the first one. After all how many movies have we seen where the original was a mindless plot disaster.... And then have a sequel suddenly have more character development and deeper family themes? If anything the sequel will probably develop April further as we go deeper into her lovelife and career and oh yeah, the turtles happen to be there. Remember how transformers went from Sam getting his first car in high school to moving up to college to his big job as an adult? Yeah. Didn't need to see The Saga de Witwicky in a movie that's supposed to be about giant alien robots.
To succeed this has to stay as far away from this one as it possibly can. A kinda/sorta but not really sequel like the Incredible Hulk was to The Hulk is the only way this going to work.

The same people who made the last minute changes in the mess of a movie out of fear of fan backlash, who aren't going to be stupid enough to try to get away with alien turtles and white shredder again. And a studio who wants more money out of thier superhero franchise that it earned. I say again, TMNT was a sucsess, but it was supposed to be a bigger succsess. Bay did not strike gold this time.
And you shouldn't be optimistic, but I think it's foolish to be pessimistic at this point, ethier. Paramount wants a new direction, what bay and From and Nemec produced last time was half-baked goods, that could have been more profitible. I don't care how much clout Michel Bay has, if the studio thinks changes will make more money, there will be changes. Yes, the studio will see problems and fix them when $$$ are involved.
And by the way, for the first movie haters; I do think the last movie was a mess. I'll not be defending it on here.

I'm more of a mutual don't really care camp unless I hear of a reboot. It can't be that much worse but not that much better either. It doesn't matter if they go for a new direction because being a sequel already limits. If they go too far into some new direction that actually does the franchise justice... Then they'd be better off just making it a whole new movie and not a continuation to this tripe.

Coola, I'd be fine with a reboot, but only if we got something like; the Turtles and shredder are already at war, and Shredder makes rocksteady and Bebop because his foot soldiers have failed so much. No orgin retelling and no retelling of the first meeting with april- let's dive right into Bebop and rocksteady and baxter stockman- and leave the backstory open for those who liked or hated the first movie, to ethier treat it as the movie's backstory, or pretend it doesn't exist.

Never heard of the bloke, although a quick glance at his wiki page shows that he supports Man City and that he has directed on Emmerdale. The former is a good thing, the latter isn't.

It also sounds like the same writing crew is back. I'm personally not holding out a lot of hope for a drastic shift in tone from the first PD TMNT movie.
For such a young, new director, it must be pretty cool being handed the keys to a large project like TMNT. There's a chance he could bring some interesting things.
Hell, his previous film was a found footage, right? Maybe the whole movie will be footage from Donnie's shell cameras.

It could be done. If they could pull off all that jazz in 5 episodes I see no reason why shredder can't already be with krang in the Technodrome right off the bat. And after the tmnt best the foot in the first fight or so in the movie shredder can send bebop and rocksteady out for the rematch... In the same movie.
Honestly it shouldn't take an entire movie to make shredde realize if my enemies are freaks then I need freaks of mine to take them out.

I'd curb your expectations until we see an announced budget, Champ.
With this last move they were apparently tweaking the SFX on a video toaster up until the last minute, in the car on the way to deliver the movie to theaters (maybe I'm exaggerating a tiny bit), exhausting every last possible dollar and second they had to spare, and the movie STILL looked like ass in a lot of places. They're gonna have twice as many CGI Hulks to work into the mix if they do Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang... and we still don't know exactly what they're looking to spend on this thing. But it's probably not a LOT more than they spent the first time, which makes me wonder how they think they're going to do twice the work for the same amount of money, with (very likely) the same running time.
They'll probably have SOME of what you're hoping for, but not to the scale you're probably expecting. If anything, it could pretty much be like the second Fantastic Four movie... "Yeah, we kinda don't know how we're gonna do Galactus because we spent all our money on Silver Surfer, so here ya go. Space Locusts." I doubt they're gonna spend the money on a full-blown "Invasion" just yet.
I mean, if it turns out the second movie has a much higher budget and is gonna go another 40 minutes, then I'll recant, but I doubt either of those things will be true.

What is somewhat disconcerting is that out of the three writers responsible for TMNT 2014 Evan Daugherty is not reported to be returning, He was seemingly brought in specificaly because he had at least a passing familiarity with the the old show.

Yeah, that's my main concern if they're adding in a whole bunch of characters, esp CGI ones. Don't really want to see the Turtles lacking screen time again, or lacking even more, because new characters have to receive enough to make their addition worth it. :ohwell:
If this guy does direct, I hope for his own sake he's got the backbone to not just be a 'yes man' for the company. Would not put it past that industry to allow a new-ish guy like that take the fall for them it if doesn't go over well, and then what, it becomes "so-in-so has never made a good movie, why should they direct this next thing..." Shame if that happens and someone hasn't had much chance to prove themselves. Stand your ground Mr. Director. Fight back against the tide of insanity. (And hell... lock Bay in a room and just let him scream in there until premier day.)

And then they kept the stupid new origin and no Hamato Yoshi.

I'm betting that either the studio suits watched the rough cut, realized they had a hot mess on their hands and sh*t themselves, or there was a test screening where the audiences didn't respond favorably, the studio realized they had a hot mess on their hands and the studio suits sh*t themselves.
Simply put, studios do not always know what they're doing - I'd go so far as to say that the vast majority of the time, they don't, and a movie will succeed despite them instead of because of them.
You want a good example of studio interference when it comes to editing, take a look at The Crow: City of Angels. David S Goyer wrote a smoking hot script and it was shot as a completely different movie to what was actually released - a 160 minute worker's cut was submitted the studio, the studio freaked out and ordered that it be edited and have some reshots done so it could specifically be as close to the original as possible. The movie, of course, bombed.

Siiiiigh....I knew the minute I saw this on Tumblr, this place would be on fire. Well, I guess I might as well add my share of kindling, but if I repeat anything, it's because I just skimmed over a lot the previous posts. I'm not going to call anyone out, but I can sense a lot of repeated messages of why this is a good/bad/horrific idea, so it's only fair that I add my two cents:
So. I guess the best way is to sum this news up into "Good News," "Bad News" and just...."News." In my honest opinion, anyway.
First the Good News: Liebesman is GONE! I know people weren't exactly singing his praises when he was signed on for this project, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. That's just me being positive, though. I can see why now so many people were against it. He may not have been BAY, but he was definitely Bay-ISH. His previous movies very much fall into the "Adrenaline pumping, action-packed" category and left little room for character development or plot. He didn't care what the writers gave him, so long as something blew up or there was chasing involved.
I know in an interview he said he was a TMNT fan, but if you ask me, it felt like he had more of an appreciation for the franchise than being an actual FAN. Like he knew it was huge in the 80s, he was aware of the basic story (turtles mutated into ninjas, trained by a rat, villain is Shredder) and knew the basic level of each Turtle: Leo was leader; Raph was the rebel; Donnie was smart; Mikey was wacky. This was why he didn't bother delving more into their personalities and just put them as token stereotypes.
So, I won't be losing any sleep for him being sent packing.
The Bad News: Bay is still on board. Yeeeup, I figured the movie made enough of a profit to let the studios keep this hack around, despite the fan base wanting his dick on a pike. He may not be the best person to work with and could care less about a character or plot so long as SOMETHING blows up, but he must be doing something right if he can pull audiences in every time he produces action crap. Honestly, I don't hate his action stuff. His visual direction is pretty decent...I just want him staying away from directing people. This includes people in mo-cap outfits.
Which brings me to my last bit:
The News-News: Dave Green to direct sequel: Uuuuuumm.....good? :ohwell: Actually, better than good. This really fills me with hope.
While I haven't seen "Earth to Echo," I heard it was a decent enough movie. While it looked like the lovechild of "E.T." meets "Cloverfield," I can honestly say it looked sort of intriguing. Heck, I won't be ashamed to admit I want to see it, even if it is sort of cheesy. I remember the trailer how it looked kind of part cutsey and part action-y. The scene with the mack truck being ripped apart, then put back together was pretty :teek: for me.
EtE looked like it had something that the first movie didn't have: Heart.
That's what I really, really, REALLY wanted to see in the Bay movie guys. In fact, this is why I love TMNT in general. Whether it was the cartoons, the comics, or the movies (previous movies), TMNT had a lot of heart while still giving us good action. This isn't some team of random superheroes like X-men or Avengers. These are four brothers who share the same backstory, but have different personalities and character. They're a family who have to struggle with being outcasts and are forced to hide in the sewers instead of living it up in a mansion or fortress of solitude. They have no secret identities or superpowers and the world (for the most part) will always see them as monsters, but they still want to protect the city and the world.
I really hope Green can see this and want to make the Turtles more than just their basic stereotype persona. Donnie should still be the smart one, but maybe have insecurities about his role on the team. Mikey should still be the joker, but maybe want to use other means of solving problems instead of just fighting. I know this is corny, but I'm just trying to make a point. The first movie helped show a LITTLE of their character, but thanks to Bay and Libesman, they figured the tokens were enough and didn't need to focus on them as much as April and Sachs.
I know what you're all thinking: But Green isn't a big-name director. He's just a nobody who Bay can push around and make his bitch puppet.
Ok, two things people. (Again, this is my personal belief. I don't care if it sounds naive, but if you guys can argue your right to voice negative assumptions, I have the right to voice positive ones. So :trazz:)
1) Steve Barron wasn't exactly a "big name" director either. Before he directed the first movie (you know, the movie the ENTIRE fan base declares to be the absolute best of the entire franchise?), he was doing short films and music videos. Let's not forget the original movie is still depicted as an INDEPENDENT movie. No big studios wanted to direct this. When it came out, kids ate it up like Mikey does with pizza. Adults, too! It was well written (though cheesy), depicted the characters well enough, and had a lot of memorable scenes with awesome puppetry. Maybe we NEED a "no name" director for this, only this time we have a "no name" who has worked with big studios.
2) Variety said how the studios want to take this in a "different direction." Even though the movie made a profit and the studios want to keep Bay on board, something tells me they won't give him AS MUCH freedom as he had before with Libesman. Bay may have the bucks, but in order to continue this franchise, he needs the studios to WANT to work with him. I may be getting my hopes up too high, but I have a feeling the studios REALLY didn't like how the fans reacted to the first movie. Maybe Hollywood is started to (slowly) understand that you need more than just car chases and buildings blowing up to make a good action movie. I think they might be finally putting a muzzle on Bay and just keep him around enough to get people invested.
I don't know how much of a fan Green is of TMNT, but if he's good at making action movies with heart, then we might get a good sequel. I just feel bad that he has to work with that mess Libesman and his crew left behind. Still, if he's willing to put his foot down whenever the script needs a rewrite or to cover up a plothole, then we can get some promising stuff for the sequel. I just hope we get more TURTLES and less APRIL. Plus, we might finally get a Dimension X story. I have a feeling that Shredder won't be back for THIS movie, but instead back by the third movie where Kraang and Shredder team up.

Yeah, playing to the lowest common denominator and, then, sucking the d*ck of the Chinese audience in the previous Transformers movie.
The News-News: Dave Green to direct sequel: Uuuuuumm.....good? :ohwell: Actually, better than good. This really fills me with hope.
EtE looked like it had something that the first movie didn't have: Heart.
As long as Bay and the first movie's writers are on board, you won't get heart in the next one. Doesn't matter who is in the director's chair. You'll get more of the same.
Because it made them money.
Besides, according to imdb and wikipedia, Green wasn't involved in any way with the writing of Earth to Echo. Screenplay by Henry Gayden and story by Gayden and Andrew Panay.
1) Steve Barron wasn't exactly a "big name" director either. Before he directed the first movie (you know, the movie the ENTIRE fan base declares to be the absolute best of the entire franchise?), he was doing short films and music videos.
Steve Barron, from what I saw in the Turtle Power documentary, also had a very clear appreciation for the Turtles and the talent and vision to back it up. And he more than did.
If this was the directing choice for the FIRST movie I'd be more cautiously optimistic. But it's not. It's the sequel to a bad movie that the majority of the behind the scenes people are back for and they cast a guy with one mediocre found footage kids movie to his name?
That's yes man hiring. No matter how you slice it.

Yeah, no. He's made them money hand over fist with Transformers and now with TMNT. Although not as much with TMNT. Why do you think they put Bay in charge at the beginning of this thing in the first place? Getting rid of Liebesman only treats a symptom. It doesn't kill the disease.
Which is probably another reason why they got rid of Liebesman. Cutting costs. First movie didn't make AS MUCH as they hoped so now, instead of recognizing that maybe it didn't was because it was an awful movie, they're just going to start cutting expenses here and there. Hiring a no name director and keeping the original writers being the first steps.
I mean, Liebesman himself said that the cg was so expensive that they had to cut Turtle time down considerably to keep costs down. And now they're thinking about ALSO adding Bebop and Rocksteady(probably also motion capture) and bringing in a new actor in Casey Jones?
It's a nerd nostalgia publicity stunt. And I'm not going to give them the benefit of the doubt after churning out a crap product in the first place.

Yes yes, I know. Sorry for that; I should really NOT go on these things after 11 pm. I just hate negativity in general, I guess. I'm basically calling MYSELF a naive child because you made some good points as well.
Aside from the obvious flaws in the first movie, I did like how the Turtles were portrayed. There just wasn't ENOUGH of them, is all. I like Megan Fox as April fine, but only as a side character, not the main. I know mo-cap is expensive, but so was Tintin and that was done COMPLETELY in mo-cap. Then again, that movie had Jackson AND Spielburg behind it, plus really good writers collaborating three functioning stories into one plot. We just weren't lucky in that regards....
I have a feeling that Shredder won't be back for THIS movie, but instead back by the third movie where Kraang and Shredder team up.Nope, Fuller and Form confirmed that the Shredder character (but not the actor) would return in the sequel.

Probably means this:
Fuller and Form subsequently revealed that Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and the character of Shredder are poised to return for the sequel as well.
Which I could take to mean that only Shredder the character will return and not the actor they got.
Wouldn't surprise me if they just got some dude. Because you can't tell who it is in the suit. So, to them, what does it matter?

Which is probably another reason why they got rid of Liebesman. Cutting costs.
Naw dude. They aren't getting rid of him they're moving him "UP".
He's taking over TF5 according to Variety. It was the plan all along. Bay wants to pass the franchise over to someone he knows will do exactly what he's done, without him having to do it. They guy is Bay's protégé. The whole snow-chase scene was a test to see if he could pull of an action sequence with vehicles and CG elements like Bay. That's it.
WME is in bed with Platinum Dunes.
http://deadline.com/2010/09/platinum-dunes-establishes-wme-beachhead-64348/
Green is a client of WME. He's the new "hotshot" for them. He's young, and well liked, so they're building his brand, while intentionally pulling from in house talent.
Watch the video he directed called Pinkberry: the movie (for WME). He actually roasts the agency, which they loved, so much so they paid to make a sequel of it called Staff Meeting Video: The Movie (/https://vimeo.com/39379565)
They didn't replace Liebsman, right now, he's a big get for them. They're really happy, and they think he did well, saved the movie even, believe it of not.
Yes, they are that ****ing clueless.

I mean, Liebesman himself said that the cg was so expensive that they had to cut Turtle time down considerably to keep costs down. And now they're thinking about ALSO adding Bebop and Rocksteady(probably also motion capture) and bringing in a new actor in Casey Jones?
Although to be fair, Casey Jones, a regular non-cgi human character will save them time and money. I'm sure the movie is gonna be 'What will Vernon do to prevent April from falling for the more macho bad boy Casey Jones' and you know.... the turtles are kinda sorta in it.... and Bebop and Rocksteady wave to the camera. Cut, print and done.

Sooooooo makes you wish there was someone along the caliber of Jim Henson so we could afford to get real character development and and you know an 'actual' TMNT movie starring ...'the turtles'
You know it's kinda ironic that all this expensive cgi seems to be a backwards step for the franchise...it can't really be that expensive to have dialogue scenes in cgi can it???

Prob cost in render time, all those dollars per hour. But if you can't 'shell' over the cash needed to do as much as needed to make it a Turtles movie, why even jump in there.
Suppose the sequel has one plus on budget next time, that being the Turtles, Splinter, and robo Shredder are already created. Granted they seem to want to add more... but if they stuck with just Bebop and Rocksteady as CGI additions that's at least four fewer on that part of the budget this time.

The 1st film had 6 CGI characters, The Shredder was also Motion Capture as well, With the 2nd one, not only would you have the Shredder, but you would also have to add Bebop and Rocksteady, So you would have a total of 8 CGI characters in the next one, Unless, They decide to go practical with the Shredder since I would guess, his suit was heavily damaged after that fall.
Maybe even 9 CGI characters if they decide to add Krang into the mix.
If they wanna cut down on the budget, They should shoot all the Shredder scenes practically, That suit was probably damaged after he fell from that building, Maybe downgrade the suit, so that he doesn't have all the high tech stuff, It was only high tech because of the magnetic blades.

I was kinda hoping that with Sachs out of the picture and, presumably, the suit damaged in some way, that he would go with a less mechanical approach and show us his true skills as a warrior and really demonstrate why this incarnation truly deserves to be the Turtles' nemesis. Afterall, if this variation of Saki requires a giant metal suit to be a badass, then he is not a badass. (He was barely even a character in the film.) It's possible for him to not have a CG suit and still look badass without looking campy.
As is, the character really didn't command his presence. The Shredder is an iconic villain and should be dominating the film, even when he's not on the screen. We as an audience should be wondering, maybe even worrying about where, when, and what his next strike will be, and he needs to meet that expectation ten-fold, making the heroes' lives a living hell. Because that's the kinda role a good villain has in a film. But unfortunately my expectations on the sequel are really low, as he'll probably just be lumbering around and not doing much else. :ohwell:

I know the horse is long dead on this one... but I still find it hilarious that The Shredder, who is literally a ninja with some bladed armour, had to be a full (or nearly-full) CGI creation.
Were the pre-production meetings just Michael Bay screaming "BIGGER! BIGGER! TO THE EXTREME!" or what?

But shredder isnt a cartoon,he isnt a robot or monster, or some weird non earth like creature. so he never needed to be or should have been cgi in the first place.
its a lazy and expensive take on an other wise simple well known established character design, all because its the "cool thing to do now"
shredder suit have just been what he always is..a guy in armor
if Hollywood can build realistic actual military grade batman suit for 3 films why is it so hard to make Shredder armor?

Yeah, I agree. Even if they wanted to try to make his armor "super cool," they could/should have just gone with what was humanly possible to make, and done via human hands via talented costume designers.

he or another, his flexibility will be limited anyway. On this kind of production it is the producers who keep the overall direction.
I'd like to see Shredder in a non CGI suit and taking the back seat in the next one and just coaching on his foot from the sidelines. Let Bebop and Rocksteady be the foes the Turtles take on for a good chunk of the film and maybe pull a page that was left out of SOTO and have Krang in the lab with Baxter.
End it with B&R an Krang in his Android-Body in an all out brawl vs. Casey, Splinter and the Turtles.

Yeah they left his & Karai's fate open-ended, either to make more options for the sequel... or it was just lazy writing.
With a new director, do you think the Turtles will have a different look? They'll obviously have different costumes, but this new guy may well change the aesthetic of the Turtles themselves. It's happened in sequels before where continuity was disregarded. If it were me, I'd make little alterations to have them looking more like the Henson version.

I doubt much will be changed regarding how the Turtles/Splinter will look.
Voice actors might not return, and they MIGHT not have a few of their previous accessories, but hiring a guy with one low budget found footage kids movie to his name proves to me they want costs kept at a minimum. Creating and rendering brand new models would be far more expensive than just re-using what they already have.
Plus, merch branding. Helps to keep costs down if the image already established is used again.

But what about Playmates? They're not gonna sit idly by & hope folks buy the (then) old toys, & I doubt they'd re-issue the same ones... Maaaaaaaaaan, when I was a kid Batman Returns pissed me off to no end for doing just that :tgrumble: It was so hard just to find a 'normal' batman. They had about 10 different coloured Batmans and one proper Batman being Crime Attack Batman....which I never found back then. Which ended up being one of my faves as it was just so cool to be Batman and Bruce Wayne.

I know what you mean! In 92, I was given a Laser Batman from the 'Batman Returns' line for my birthday & I remember thinking "...but he doesn't look like this in the movie. And he sure doesn't fire lasers". So....it's "Secret of the Ooze" all over again? What upset me about that movie was how much more toned down it was. Yeah, I was a little shocked hearing Raph yelling "DAMN!" loud enough for the entire city to hear, but I knew it wasn't a cartoon. I always assumed there was cursing in live-action movies....except for the Sesame Street ones, of course.
I remember Nostalgia Critic reviewing the first three movies in one of his SUPER early reviews and how basically SotO taught children how to make everyday household items into weapons as opposed to actual ninjutsu weapons that are not easily accessible to the general public. ("Thank you, mothers of America.")
Still, I'm hoping the sequel won't be quite like that. I mean, if parents are taking their kids still to see "Avengers" and "Captain America," (which are ALSO PG-13), then hopefully they won't bring this movie down past that rating. I just want more focus on the Turtles. Fine, we know April knew them; we can shift the focus off her for a bit.

If they do make it more "kiddie", it makes sense, though. Most of the people who liked this pile the most were little kids, and the grown-ups who liked it seem to keep reminding everyone that "It's all for the kids, man!" as an excuse for how lousy it was. It's too soon to know if they are indeed going to target even more towards kids, but I can see that happening.

With a new director, do you think the Turtles will have a different look? They'll obviously have different costumes, but this new guy may well change the aesthetic of the Turtles themselves.
Strong doubts personally. The original movies sound like they had to keep making replacement parts anyhow due to the wear and tear they took so kind of a given new ones would automatically be created. Though I'm not sure changing the 3D models would be cost effective for the budget when existing models are already there and well made despite not being the usual design and a bunch of gnarly looking buggers.
I imagine most budget for character design will prob go to Bebop and Rocksteady as they will no doubt need it. (And super duper mega Shredder if they go that route.)
Repeating myself I'm sure, but personally I find the designs a little better in lighting and angles that are more flattering on them. At the very least I could accept some purposeful attention to that fact (ok, opinion).
If they do change their gear/accessories I sorta look forward to seeing what happens with that. Since the Turtles know April now she should totally get them sports gear for NY teams if they're fans; NY resident kind of stuff they can't really get on their own. lol :D (Then again, they buy Pop-Tarts... clearly they obtain things by Turtle magic.)

So, potentially... instead of hearing the very very (very) valid criticisms of this movie, taking them to heart and trying harder to make something better next time, they're just gonna set the bar lower so they don't have to bother?

I highly doubt they'll make new CGI models of the turtles, new gear... Maybe.
The models are well enough crafted that they could easily last at least two more sequels. If you're smart, you make the CG models for the sequel, it's what they did when making the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk, their aim was to make the model usable for the sequel and a future Avengers movie. Of course Marvel Studios got a new cgi model for the Hulk to reflect Ruffalo, but the Incredible Hulk cgi model was tremendously impressive, especially from showreels where they showed how much work there was into the muscle work and how the skin moved over the muscles and simulating blood flow and all that incredible stuff.

Yeah, likewise. This movie pretty much had Mikey carry the entire "teen" thing. I could have easily believed the other three were well older than that.
It's been discussed before, but I still wouldn't mind if they were set more at 18/19 and by the time the sequel comes around they've hit 20s and the title drops the "teenage" part. (Though they already seem like 20s to me.)

For the sequels, It would make sense for them to drop the Teenage in the title and just stick with Ninja Turtles, if the sequels show them being in there 20s.

Wasn't the teenage thing another thing they were dropping (back when they were aliens)? I know "Teenage Mutant" was only added back into the title after fan backlash. Wouldn't be surprised if they were planned/designed to be older and just added some dialogue about them being teens when fans (rightly) complained.
They basically wanted to make Young Adult Alien Ninja Turtles starring April & Casey with a big mech/robot fight at the end (originally Krang, ultimately Shredder). They just kept being forced to adapt due to fan backlash.
I wonder if they would go back to using rubber/latex suits and CGI'g their faces for the sequel instead of doing all CGI again??
It might save on some of the costs and they can still do big CGI stunts for action scenes if they need to. I could be way off with that seeing how real turtles suit footage turned CGI might stick out like a sore thumb.

Do you have a link to the Incredible Hulk show reel simulating blood flow?

No, it was shown during a Animex presentation back in 09 or 2010. Together with a short presentation about Irom Man, and the differences on working on fantasy creatures like the Transformers where they didn't need to worry about volume and size of the creature when the transformed, compared to the Iron Man suit where it had to be based in reality. Like weaponry had to look believable and small enough to fit inside the suit. And a lot about the texture work they did on Iron Man.
The Hulk presentation was mostly about just the cgi model, how it was constructedand that it was rigged to do "anything". Even Hulk out from different points of the body, like one foot growing and the rest of the body follows.
The most impressive part was close-ups of the model flexing his muscles, particularly his back, as it look really impressive and just like a skin tight bodybuilder's body would act when flexing.

It's funny, cause in the movie, it looked like the hulks diffuse stretched too much, the displacement looked wonky in certain poses, almost asthough it was a bump map instead, and the muscle deformations felt wrong, specifically the hulk out.
I felt the Avengers hulk nailed the look and feel, and was closest to how I would imagine the hulk would look like in reality. The hulk to me is a case of 3 movies to get it right, but will be hard to top. I prefer this hulk to Lou's even.
I still felt the "I'm always angry" transformation was kinda weak.
He still didn't look real, but he was somewhat believable.
I really didn't care for the avengers as a film, but I couldn't help buying a ticket just to see the hulk. There were some really impressive moments with him.

Despite me gushing over Incredible Hulk's cgi model, the Avengers one is even more impressive.
But, what i really like with Incredible, is the lengths they took with making the model. They had little to go from script-wise what the model had to be able to do, and they took it an extra mile by making sure it could be reused for a sequel (which didn't happen). A lot of care was made into it.
same goes for Iron man, the director of the first movie, according to the guys having the Animex presentation, hated CGI effects and wanted to use practical effects and suits as much as possible. But when he saw a finished test scene with the CGI model, he was blown away how better it looked compared to the suit they had ready.

I'll admit, I like the Incredible hulk over his Ang Lee predecessor, but while impressive at the time, it doesn't really hold up the way that, say, Optimus and bone crusher do in the 1st TF movie. I'd still argue that sequence looks better than any of the follow ups. I can't really figure out why. My guess is that they have abandoned the Monte Carlo render in favor of a more cost effective solution, resulting in less physically accurate renders, but still passible for the general public. I felt the cg of Maleficent is the worst offender this year from this, but I'm sure there are others.

He was easily the break out character of the movie. A shame outside of Avenger movies nobody knows what to do with him.

True enough. I don't think either of the Hulk films were all that bad just, different. Better than TMNTPD for sure.
Must be the green; they don't know how to make a good film about green foilks. I think it's a racial thing.

A dialogue must be opened, Hollywood must become more sensitive and respectful to how it portrays green people!

Screen Junkies had a fun talk (starting minute 37) about Dave Green, the first movie & who they want in the sequel:
