View Full Version : How do ninja clans work in modern day?

I starting to think that most ninjas clans are structure around Yakuza since they would be the sort of people who benefit the most from their kind of service.
Ninjas historically serve noble samurai families but because of Meiji Restoration, samurai power was taken away and Japan itself became completely unified. The only choice would be to serve the government but it looks to me that many clans refuse to acknowledge him because they felt that the government was becoming too westernize or didn't want break away ties from their samurai clans. Samurai clans change into becoming businesses and perhaps they kept their ninjas for personal security reasons.
The only question is why do ninjas in modern day still be fighting each other on such a large war level scale, going so far as to committing a massacre?

The short answer is, Ninja Clans in the modern era is ********.
The long answer is, the crew don't really care much about maintaining realism in a show about mutated animals and it's better to treat the world within the show as very loosely based on the real world, rather than pretend that it actually is the real world.
Edit: I would also like to add that IDW has an explaination. Karai found out that her family comes from ninjas and after an encounter with the Shredder's ghost she recreated the Foot Clan, it was a recent restoration as opposed to an ancient clan that perpetuated.

Idw's idea of reincarnation made the ninja aspect much more sense to explain for Splinter and Shredder's behavior and attitude.
With OT/archie, Yoshi/splinter was not so much a ninja as he was more a ninjutsu practitioner that own a martial arts dojo.

They really don't work, but you're right, the Yakuza would benefit from them.

Ninjitsu continues to exist in modern day as a martial art much like Taekwon-do and Karate, although "clans" probably just turned into academies where you enter and pay a monthly fee to learn the art. They probably kept certain "clan" traditions around like ninja ranks and disciplinary rules etc. but stuffs that no longer make sense in the modern world would probably be phased out over time.
And maybe in the "underground" side of the modern world, ninjas are still trained as hired assassins and use as such, like how they were depicted in several movies including the last Wolverine film. Of course those could be simply fictional but only people who have actuals ties with that side of the society would know for sure if they are still common today.

So it wouldn't be so far off to assume that splinter's ninja clan was underground.

You seem to have a healthy interest in clans, both in fact and fiction. I recommend reading about the various Ninja factions in Mortal Kombat. Worth starting with the Lin Kuei.

I guess. My don't have exposure to ninja fiction but I find them more interesting when they're real and militaristic as oppose to supernatural and "I must have no emotion" ones.

I understand. Still, to expand your knowledge fully (even though the above is fictional and hyperbolic), I would certainly recommend reading about Mortal Kombat. If nothing else it's extremely interesting and entertaining.

It's hard to get entertain from a wikipedia page. :ohwell:
The show around it looks a lot like Batman: The Animated Series.
One of the few of ninja fiction that I read was Naruto and even though that is heavily supernatural and hyperbolic, the tone in the part 1 feel very much like a realistic military then say Ninja Assassin and there were a lot of dark themes. It also the help most of the battles was won through strategy and tactics. The only thing missing early on was the samurai.
You know, it's funny that the common misconception is that samurai and ninja hate each other guts but in reality the relationship is really symbiotic in nature. Battles may be won through samurai, but you need ninjas to win wars. :twink:

I personally enjoy reading things related to games, TV shows etc (Mortal Kombat is primarily a gaming franchise). But I get that it isn't for everyone.
I've heard mixed things about Naruto, but it seems like it's right up your street, so perhaps best to learn as much as you can about that.
Yeah, the samurai/ninja thing isn't as much a dichotomy as it is presented, as you say. If you enjoy samurais I'm told that the Usagi comics are great, but I'm thinking you already read those.

I read Naruto but I stop somewhere in part 2 because by then the quality took a massive dive in both art and story. :tmad:
I also wanted to try Usagi. It seems really interesting.
I have also watch Samurai Jack. Straightforward storyline with a straightforward character but man the show had such presence and atmosphere. I really love that! I also watch the first series of Rurouni Kenshin. Historical accuracy made it educational on some levels.
I think the best series with samurai is Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue. It's a masterpiece.
http://assets4.malagana.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Vagabond-1.jpg
I think the best series with historical accuracy but with a lot of visual style in character design is Blade of the Immortal. Most of the fights are interesting because of the perspective drawn in it.
I am going off on a tangent here but that I but recommend any one to check out Vagabond and if you want something a little crazy and out there but still historical accurate then Blade of the Immortal.

also both stories are violent and dark but I have a feeling that it's not going to phase you too much.

Yeah, I'd like to get into Naruto, but as I said when discussing One Piece, there's no way I'm investing time into something with that many episodes and that much filler, both in terms of the anime and the manga.
We should both start on Usagi. Samurai Jack looks pretty interesting, I remember hearing about that a while ago.
Ahh, Blade of the Immortal and Vagabond. I am familiar with both, but yet to read. Those are massive undertakings but I hope to get to them very soon. I hear they're both brilliant though so it looks like you have excellent taste.

This isn't modern day, but you might want to check this out:

Also, in regard to manga, Samurai X (or Kenshin) has many ninja, a few who are major characters for a large part of the manga.

It is but let's get back to the topic at hand. M'kay.
Now it's funny how the Hamato's clan or maybe just Yoshi's father might have anti-government attitude but yet there a photo of Yoshi and Saki of them in the military.
It makes wonder if either the father change the clan and adopted the academic dojo model like other martial artists or better yet Saki found out the true story and nearly lost his god damn mind while Yoshi is equally horrified and swears that he is going to change his clan. The father gets on angry tirade on goes on how "Japan is losing it's identity and dignity to appease the white masses". Yoshi threaten to leave the clan and Saki feeling move by his words decided to join him. And becomes touching scene of brotherly love and it feels tragic knowing where it will all lead.
I feel I have to stop.

I'd speculate that a ninja clan in the Nick cartoon's contemporary setting, works for the highest bidder, or just for themselves. Similar to in Mirage comics, Saki was running a security/protection company.
Shredder in the Nicktoon have a lot of funds as we've seen, and contacts such as Steranko the arms dealer. Since shinobi-no-Jutsu (Ninjutsu) is a skill set that includes lying, bluffing, blending in, acting, infiltration, espionage and all sorts of open-disguise techniques. it's not unlikely that Shredder (in any incarnation, but this is a Nick thread) have Foot infiltrated into banks, large companies as CEO's, government positions, high ranking military positions and maybe in law enforcement.
And that could got for other Ninja clans as well if there are more clans in the nicktoon universe, although The Foot could be the last surviving clan as far as we know (and the Hamato)

The Foot clan doesn't seem to be your typical ninja clan as far I can tell. To be a ninja, you would have to be related to other ninjas and yet Bradford (an american man) is his apprentice which might mean that anybody from any social class can be part of the Foot Clan . Also the name itself is unusual since it's not "Oroku clan", it's "Foot clan".
I know that in Shredder's circumstance he would have recruit outsiders regardless of the Foot's policy but my piece of evidence is that when Shredder explains the history of the Kuro Kabuto, he didn't say it was forge by his ancestor, he said "founder" of the Foot clan. In a way, the Foot clan probably operates more like a large corporation business then a small family own business like so many others.

What I want to know is what kind of operation was Shredder running (and why) before he found out Yoshi/Splinter was alive and in NYC and ran off to focus on vengeance. The initial shot of him looked like he was in some big office or something in a tall building, so what was it he left behind. (And who's in charge while he's gone.) Maybe some kind of ninja styled crime ring like the original two movies?

We'll probably never know exactly what operations Nicktoon Shredder do with a Ninja Clan. At most we'll probably just get that he have a vague generic crime empire ruled in the shadows.

That's so boring on paper (even though my suggestion was no better)http://i.imgur.com/YZbOWRg.png
I like to think that while some lesser clans are often involve in Yakuza gang wars, Shredder and maybe even the Hamato clan takes their business over seas in war torn countries to assassinate dictators or enemies of dictators, sometimes both to takeover it all. :ttwisted:
The concept of modern ninjas can be really interesting subject if you put some thought into it.
