View Full Version : Which turtle is the most dispensable?

As in, which turtle is the least important to the team? Not even necessarily a liability, but just not really needed to win most battles?
You can select a turtle for differing iterations. Show your working.

You could omit Donatello from the running in pretty much any Turtleverse, especially the Fred Wolf, IDW, and Nick versions. He saved the day so many times. Things got ridiculous during the Fred Wolf run.
And Don isn't even my favorite. How sad.
So that leaves me with 3 to choose from...
Mirage: probably Leo.
Fred Wolf: Raph (great jokes, but his bad-assery is non-existant)
Live-Action (#1-3): Raph (gets beat down twice)
Image: i barely remember these.
TMNT (#4 CGI): Leo again.
4Kids: i've seen maybe a half dozen of these episodes... no clue.
IDW: Leo yet again.
Nick: Mike. Buzz buzz.
TMNT (#5): never watched it
games:
TMNT 1 NES: Raph, shortest reach
TMNT 2 NES: None, all equal
TMNT 3 NES: Mike, with that stupid slow-moving special attack kick
TMNT 4 SNES/GEN: Leo/Mike/Raph. Don had the best reach.
TMNT 1 Arcade: Mike/Raph. Fastest but weakest.
TMNT 2 Arcade: Mike/Leo/Don. Raph has a different/better special attack.

That's a really tough question. I keep thinking "but wait, __ is needed for __".
I'm basing them on their general well-known cartoon personalities.
Don is probably the most important Turtle. They wouldn't get far without his intelligence, inventions and level head.
A leader is important, or else there would be chaos. Raph and Mikey would make bad leaders.. Don might be a good one, but he has too much on his plate already. So Leonardo is necessary..
That leaves Mikey or Raph as least important. I'm having NES flashbacks :tsad:
Mikey is not only a great fighter, he's the morale booster. They'd probably go mad without his lighthearted shell around. Leo and Raph would kill each other.
Raph brings a ton of strength and passion to the team, but he also brings a lot of conflict. If he wasn't around they'd be weaker, but their teamwork may improve..
When it comes to winning battles, I think Mikey would be the least important. If I had to erase a Turtle's existence, I guess Raph..
Hey wait, can I pick Venus? :D

None of the TMNT, in my opinion. He probably doesn't count, but I'd say Mr. Turtle from the old tootsiepop commercial is dispensable. Never liked that one. He bites. Literally, he does. Oh my God, I'm such a fiend. Here it is a little over a week until Christmas and I'm writing about offing turtles! I'll honor the spirit of the turtle every day of the year. I shall live in all three animated series and the comics. Surely, the awesomeness of all these shall strive within me. Tell me that I may sponge away the writing on this screen! Sewers, and pizza time be praised! I say this while grating cheese, old Splinter: grating cheese!

Their strength comes from that fact they are a team of four. Yes they do split up at times but it doesn't seem like they win the day until all four are on the scene. It is kind of like asking, which of your four limbs are expendable? :tcool:

Well speaking from a strictly unbiased view of who is the least necessary for MOST situations, I'd say probably Raph. His head-strong, impatient personality and his anger issues make him a liability at times, and he has difficulty following orders, too. Strength is good, but they ALL have that going for them (even though he's the strongest, it rarely becomes a factor) so it's not enough to make him indispensable. His only other real asset seems to be his ability to take more hits due to toughness, but that still might not make up for his attitude problem, which gets them INTO more trouble than he ever gets them OUT of.
Mikey might be next on the list, but he's a good order-taker, his optimism and morale-boosting gives him a unique place of keeping the team steady under pressure, and his skills (when he focuses) are off the charts, so when it's balls-to-the-wall time, he is probably a bigger asset than Raph.

Mirage: probably Leo.
TMNT (#4 CGI): Leo again.
IDW: Leo yet again.
Totally letting my Leo fanboyism show here, but...
Mirage Leo is arguably the most well rounded fighter, his performance is very calculated & precise. You gotta remember, this is the turtle who took on tens of foot at a time, alone, on several occasions, defeated the Shredder, strategized most of the turtles' best laid plans, etc. He's very much the leader & the glue keeping the team together & focused, at least for most of the series.
TMNT's Leo left home & all the other turtles literally just stopped giving a damn. When he's around, they're on point, but they're otherwise unorganized, unfocused, & somewhat dysfunctional. I know he was rendered useless in large portions of the film, but I think the change in status quo during his down-time speaks clearly to the state of the team without him.
IDW's Leo has gotten spiritual guidance from his mother, which goes to show he has power beyond sight & the physical plane, something his brothers lack. He's got memories of his past life, the strongest bond with Splinter, his leadership role, he's definitely a key player. One who, like Mirage Leo, was able to take on an army by himself. The brainwash thing was/is tricky but if nothing else it showed he was a formidable opponent against the entirety of his family, & that when driven with a goal, evil though it may be, there's little that can stop him (which is why he was selected for that).

None... it's a loss and setback to all no matter who is removed.
Lose Leo and there's no one to help keep Raph and Mikey reigned in until the best moment to let the fury and chaos loose. If Donnie took up lead along with everything else he does for the team he might be more likely to freeze up or freak out under the pressure, and if Raph is butting heads with him he may not be able to stand up to Raph as well as Leo is able.
Lose Donnie and their arsenal/tech is permanently bare bones. While their enemies improve their own capabilities, the Turtles are stuck and will eventually be outdone and unable to compete with what's against them. While Leo is a good planner, without Donnie they lose the brains behind answers to some of the tougher plans.
Lose Raph and you lose the passion and drive, the proactive push to get things taken care of now. The force that does not care to stop for anything short of the goal is gone. The one who'd help push to keep the two thinkers thinking and problem solving quickly and efficiently.
Lose Mikey and you lose the enthusiasm and cheer that keeps up moral and the will to keep going no matter what the odds. No more silver lining to help the rest from worrying and brooding too much. No more reminder of the good in the world that makes doing what they do well worth it.

I think you guys have Raph all wrong. He is always the one who wants to take out bad guys even when the others don't or can't. He is the physical strength of the team. Seems he can go longer than the others in a fight. He is also super loyal. This is of course any version of him except the OT.

Raph ditches the group in one movie, gets captured in another, and tries to kill Leo in yet another movie. A lot of his choices and second-guessing get the team into trouble in Nick, making him the second biggest liability next to Mikey in that incarnation. You have a weird definition of 'loyal'.

He's not the smartest, but the most passionate.
Leo and don are the two most important of course. Mikey or raph aren't as important and had to choose either one of them then I'd get rid of raphael. Yeah he's strong and he can be funny at times but overall he's the angry A-hole of the group that never listens and his eager to fight gets them in trouble sometimes. Besides, michaelangelo is funnier and has a better personality anyway.

12-17-2014, 11:58 AM
Bingo. That's pretty much what I said, too. Raph may be strong, but that's about ALL he has going for him. His hot-head nature tends to make him more of a liability than an asset. Also- when he disobeys a DIRECT ORDER from Splinter because he's getting pissy at Leo, there's a problem.
Leo656

If any of them are expendable - and I'd argue that none of them are - but I'd say even though he's the "Heart" of the team and the most popular, Mikey doesn't add anything except jokes. Like, maybe his goofy good-nature helps keep the team together during the tough times, but as far as being an actual physical asset, nah. He exists for Marketing Potential, the jokes and the catch-phrases and to keep little kids watching, and that's it. The other three could conceivably handle just about any situation without him.
That said, it probably IS his good nature that would keep them all from eventually drifting apart due to their vastly different personalities, but strictly in the sense of, "Assuming they're still a team, could the other three handle any given situation they'd face without him?" Yes, they could. He actually has made things worse in the short-term a bunch of times by being such a bungler.
Raph is just dumb muscle, so he's the next most-expendable. His main role is to conflict with Leonardo and whine about he'd be a better leader even though, holy sh*t, not on your life. He exhibits little to no leadership quality or ability and is all about himself most of the time. He doesn't really want to be in charge, he just wants what Big Brother has, which is childish and annoying.
Not that I'd get rid of any of them. What makes the dynamic work so well is the conflicting personalities, after all. That said, as far as strictly who is most capable, the two Turtles who Think Before They Act would clearly be way ahead of the two that Never Do.

I don't think any of them are dispensable, really - all of them are essential parts of a whole. Each of them brings something unique to the team; realistically you could take any of them out of the equation and they'd struggle along, but the team functions at its best when all of them are together. Like Splinter says in the 2007 movie - each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, each of them is strong in areas where their brothers are weak and vice versa.
I don't think Raph really deserves the flak that he's getting either. Is he a hothead? Sure. But so is Wolverine and we don't consider that that really makes him a dispensable member of the Xmen. It's easy to just write him off as the meathead with a bad temper - particularly when certain incarnations paint him as only that, and he can get short shrift in terms of showing the other parts of him (I feel - particularly in the Nick series).
But nobody is more protective of his brothers than Raph is. Whether he disagrees with them or not, no matter how badly he argues with his family, he'll fight to the death to protect them. Does he lose his temper and storm off and make bad choices sometimes? Of course he does. But a good character always has flaws. Each of the guys has their own flaw.
Mikey's is that he doesn't take things seriously most of the time - the world is a joke to him. He lacks focus and doesn't always direct his potential; his energies are scattered.
Leo's is that he can be arrogant, too serious and doesn't always consider his brothers feelings when he gets super-focused on a mission. He sees the big picture but doesn't always focus on the details.
Donnie's is similar in that he will often get drawn into the details, rather than the big picture. He's the smartest and most reserved but that can then lead to scenarios where he is introverted and drawn into his own world and his inventions while ignoring what's going on outside of that. I'd also argue that as the gentlest Turtle, he could be considered to be the least ferocious in a fight/have the least passion about the warrior aspects of their training.
The problem as I see it is that Raphs flaws are the easiest go-to for writers when it comes to finding something to create drama or tension for plot purposes, or to create a cause-and-effect scenario to move the plot along.
So yeah - back to my original point: Raph has a lot of traits which make him an asset to the team. As much as he fights with his brothers, he's still depicted as being very close with them (particularly in the 2k3 series). He is the most emotional Turtle; while that means that he is prone to outbursts, it also means he has a great deal of compassion - he's always very distressed in any incarnation when his brothers are hurt, he goes out of his way to help others (see: Lone Raph & Cub, Touch & Go from the 2k3 series, as well as the fact that he commits to preventing crime by taking on the Nightwatcher gig in the 2k7 flick). He is reckless and doesn't always think - but he's also proactive, passionate, driven and results-focused. That recklessness also correlates into bravery as he's not afraid to put himself at risk in order to achieve his goals.
It's a question of maturity. They're teenagers; most of the time they've always been portrayed as teenagers. I've always felt that Raph had a great deal of potential and that the question of whether he overcame his inner darkness or not would impact whether he continued to be a loner, or whether he would become a leader/second-in-command in his own right.
I'd argue that while he is portrayed in the Nick series as not wanting the leadership role (because he's unable to put his brothers in situations where their lives are risked), this isn't universal across the board in all of his incarnations. I also think that his constant challenging of Leo is sometimes less to do with wanting to be leader and more to do with the fact that he doesn't like being told what to do. Leo doesn't always take his brothers' opinions into consideration when he's giving orders, and I think that rubs Raph the wrong way. Raph always prefers to go from Point A to Point B via the shortest route. It's simply a question of having a different POV when problem-solving.

But thinking without passion is also a flaw.
That's the thing - all of the guys have very human, relatable flaws. You don't need to be a mutant turtle to have a bad temper, or to sometimes be arrogant or to take hardly anything seriously.
You probably wouldn't find a single person on these boards who doesn't have at least one of the flaws that the guys does.

I've got enough of Raph's flaws and enough self-awareness to know that he's kind of overrated in general, that's my position.
See, lots of people who claim they have a lot of Raph in them embrace that, and in turn, embrace him. I cant stand that sh*t about myself and I aspire to something greater, because nobody should actually want to be like that guy. His behavior, by and large, is not very good. :P
It's why I'm more a Leo guy in general. It's better to aspire to reach greatness, or an ideal, and to fail or come up short, than it is to say, "This is me, deal with it, I am who I am and I'm not interested in changing." There's nothing noble or heroic in that, it's an admission of self-defeat.

THIS. SO MUCH THIS. Perfectly explains why Leo is my favorite despite my being the most like Raph.
& frankly, the people who say they're like Raph yet glorify him, probably aren't actually anything like Raph at all. Uncontrollable anger is a terrible burden to bear. I couldn't get rid of anyone, including ol' pain in the ass :P, I mean who would Leo fuss with then?
Personally I've never seen Leo as arrogant (ok, 2007 made him look cocky, but I've always kind of discounted that movie), I just take him as being so focused on not wanting to fail or let anyone down, especially Splinter. And youngsters don't tend to know how to lead without appearing bossy sometimes, esp when dealing with equal peers who may want to disregard someone's role as leader. And sometimes they do brush him off too easily and a kid may not know how to maintain or recover order of the team he needs to be leading when that happens. And if he can't be an effective leader, then in his mind he may have let everyone down.
Hell, even in this movie in that one scene he's yelling "Guys we need a plan!" NOPE. Were you saying something Leo?
I agree a big part of Raph is being the sort of personality that doesn't like being told what to do. So that inevitably makes the dynamic hard for him. But it should also be a part of his own maturing and development, that while he may not be fond of it, he can recognize when he needs to step back and allow the better sides of him be an asset instead of wrestling for control.
pennydreadful
12-17-2014, 07:32 PM
We kind of do see Raph aspiring to be better though (or at least, that's my perception). When he gets to the point where he loses his temper so badly that he breaks Leo's swords or nearly bashes Mikey's brains in with a length of pipe - that's when he pulls up and realizes that he's gone too far and he does need to have more control. He admits that he's messed up and reigns it in.
He has a lot of outbursts, but I think his actual out-of-control moments are fewer and more far between. And that's why he storms off when he does get angry - because when he gets into that headspace, he goes off by himself to cool off so he doesn't lash out and cause more damage.
I dunno, that's just the way I see it. Powder and Leo both make good points - being angry isn't a desirable character trait, and isn't fun for the person who has it or anyone around them. It's certainly not something to aspire to. I do honestly feel that Raph does envy Leo's control and his ability to stay calm. Maybe that's part of why he always argues with him - to try to crack that cool exterior and prove that Leo's control isn't perfect either?

THANK YOU FOR THIS.
Nick Raph is possibly the worst about this, as well, and yet frighteningly he seems to be considered one of the better versions.
Although I disagree with your previous point that Mikey is the most popular. I might think he's possibly the most expendable (Raph a close second) but I'm pretty Raph is the most popular.
Leo656
12-17-2014, 08:58 PM
I think Raph and Mikey are each the "most popular" with a different set. Mikey has always been the one the little kids emulated the most - as anyone who constantly yelled "Cowabunga!" or "Gnarly, Dude!" on the playground with their friends back in the day can attest - but just a few years later, kids start to adopt Raphael as "Their Turtle" during their "Angsty Teen" phase. It seems that most people don't pick a "Real" favorite until they outgrow all that stuff in their late-teens. At that point, yeah, they usually will either pick or stay with Raphael because he's "cooler" than the nerd or the uptight, bossy one.
So yeah, I'll agree that I think Raphael is probably most popular In General while Mikey is most popular with kids.
And I'll back up what Powder said, I've known a few guys who self-identified as "Raphaels". They totally envisioned themselves as too-cool-for-school, knuckle-cracking, toothpick-chewing "lone wolf" bad-asses, but, they were really just assh*les, and Raph was the Turtle that happened to bear the closest resemblance to themselves. More an issue of narcissism and posturing than anything else. Not everyone, obviously, but it's... kind of irritatingly common. You see it a lot with Wolverine fans, too.

Oh I'unno, people like all different things, there's never Just One Reason.
I was just commenting on how a lot of self-described "Raph Types" tend to fit a pattern, but that's not always the case.
I guess people who prefer Mikey probably tend to be more laid back and upbeat in general, I'unno. It's not a blanket analysis. Like, not all Don fans are uber-geeks and not all Leo's are uptight bossy types. And not all Raph fans are "Raph Types". It's just something you tend to see *more* in Raphael's case, so that's what I was getting into before.

Well, I see myself in all of them except for Leo. I'm a workout buff who'll get frustrated over the littlest things; I'm a studious Grammar Nazi whose friends get mad at him for correcting them (*cough* several times per minute); and, in the right environment, I'm the most effervescent/carefree person you've ever seen. But I'm not the bossy type in the slightest, so Leo isn't my guy, unfortunately.
That said, I think Leo's the most vital to the team, considering he's the most dedicated one there is. Take him away, and the other 3 lose their motivation. Donnie's absolutely necessary for fairly obvious reasons. They need brains on their side.
That leaves Mikey and Raph as the two contenders for most "dispensable." I could list pros and cons for each; but all in all, I couldn't imagine the TMNT with only 3 members. So I can't decide. But if I had a gun to my head, I'd say Mikey. True that Raph's anger issues are basically at the root of every problem between the four of them...but he's also a better fighter. Mikey's funny, sure, but that doesn't really "help" them much. And his fighting style is the most inferior in almost every incarnation, so losing him would be the least detrimental. And I personally think Raph's drama makes things seem more realistic, in that it makes them actually seem like brothers with the way they argue. Open to objection, but that's my input.
True. Very true. But Raphael is the most similar out of the four to that persona, so can't exactly blame them for associating themselves with him. Raph's kind of an a-hole, too. :trazz: I see where you're comin' from, though; people shouldn't falsely identify themselves like that. Plenty of posers out there, after all.
I like Raph the most, but it's mostly because I always love that aggressive "do-it-yourself" character; not necessarily because I relate to him.

Note that I said they "envisioned" themselves as that kind of bad-ass. For most of them that I knew, self-identifying with a tough-guy cartoon character and having some kind of Hot Topic piercing was as "bad-ass" as they'd ever get.
"I 'get' Raph so much, man, he's just like me!"
"DUDE. You fill scripts at Rite-Aid, and you got mad at your Dad and punched a hole in your wall ONE TIME. Your MOM bought you a CAR, you don't have any siblings to scrap with, and you live in the goddamn suburbs. You *happen* to like the color red. SHUT. UP."

 Ah, the youngsters in particular who want to put on that tough guy front. There are certainly Raph-type personalities out there, but for all those who aren't but just wish to be the tough guy, it might be a bit healthier to want to emulate Raph's sort of qualities that can be used for good rather than just looking like a hard ass. I could easily see him being a role model to being a go-getter, having the strength not to bend to pressures you shouldn't, like peer pressure, and being passionate about what you believe in - if people can look past the attitude.

Some interesting posts, thanks for the contributions.
Perhaps my point wasn't clear, however. Yes, the team works best with all four of them present, as they're a cohesive unit and the total is greater than the sum of the parts. What I was asking is which would make the smallest dent if they were absent, either temporarily or permanently. They'd be weaker if reduced to three, but the removal of which boy would cause the least problems?
Think of it as a damage limitation exercise.

I hate how he is so often portrayed as a bungler, when the simple fact is that more often than not, he's merely unfocused or distracted. He's NOT clumsy (Bay movie and Nick be d@mned) not is he stupid. One of my favorite eps from 2K3 was The Christmas Aliens, which showed just how GOOD he really is when he id determined to do something. And we're all aware of the fact that he has more NATURAL TALENT then any of the others. When he's good, he D@MN good.
The rest of the time, he's just not taking things seriously- but that approach seems to work for him- and all too well, at times. He's often at his best when he's treating the bad guys like opponents in a game, where he can taunt, harass, and even torment them mercilessly with his own brand of humor. And what's really scary about him is that this tactic WORKS. He plays it as a game, and when it comes to games, Mikey is the MASTER. I'd rather deal with Raph in a full-on rage than have to fight Mikey in his most wicked and mischievous mood. Because he would kick your @$$ while grinning evilly and driving you mad with his incessant taunts and jokes. His tactic of distraction and annoyance is just plain EVIL!!
But a good character always has flaws. Each of the guys has their own flaw.
Mikey's is that he doesn't take things seriously most of the time - the world is a joke to him. He lacks focus and doesn't always direct his potential; his energies are scattered.
Actually, I think Mikey's lack of seriousness can be a big asset. Since he treats fights as a game, he knows how to "win" by PLAYING his opponents as much as by FIGHTING them. That's how he beat Raph in the 2K3 "Meet Casey Jones" ep, and again in their fight in the Battle Nexus. He knew how to use his opponent's own weaknesses to the greatest advantage. He uses basically the same skill-set as Spider-Man, actually. Taunt and joke them to death, and annoy them until they get flustered and make a fatal error. And it works.
Also, I'd like to point out that the Touch and Go eps were Mikey's, not Raph's. One was Mikey and Nobody, the other was Mikey and Splinter. Raph had nothing to do with those two. He was actually off helping the little old lady in the one where Mikey and Splinter were fighting that pair!
I guess people who prefer Mikey probably tend to be more laid back and upbeat in general, I'unno. It's not a blanket analysis.
I will say that this is certainly true in my case. I relate to him as being laid-back, unruffled, and upbeat, which is something I've always been. I also tend to gravitate to those types in general- which may also explain why I also married one, LOL!
His fighting style is hardly inferior- it's so chaotic and unpredictable that he's actually MORE of a challenge, because one would never know what he's going to do, or how/where he will move/strike/block. His fighting style is all about keeping the enemy guessing, and with a weapon like the nunchaku, it's already difficult to gauge what the person using them will do, because they have NO katas. Meaning that he could make up moves as he goes, even create his own routines, and without knowing what his attack sequence will be, it would be next to impossible to counter that. And if he's fully focused? Might as well just get down on the ground and tap out....
And Raph's not a BETTER fighter (Splinter himself claims Mikey as the most "gifted" student) just the strongest and most persistent. He's the type to go charging after enemies even after they retreat, and end up getting himself cornered in the process when they regroup. This is one reason why Leo is always having to rein him in, because if he didn't Raph would get himself (and possibly one or more of his brothers) killed going overboard on the Foot, the Dragons, or whomever else they happen to be fighting.

Ah, sorry Marvel - I was citing Raph helping Mrs Morrison in Touch & Go as an example of his compassion/how he helps others; maybe the way I said it came out weird. :) I definitely can't cite it as an episode where he's an asset to the team but I thought it was a good example of him actually displaying personality traits other than "the hothead".
Trying Dave's question the way he intended it... I honestly don't know. If I absolutely HAD to pick one, I'd say Mikey or Raph, I suppose. But it's awful to think about! :tcry:

I share the same conclusion many had said, you need all four because they are a team. They bring different opinions and characteristics that are needed for them to succeed together. They all make up for each other's shortcomings and weaknesses.
The problem with the topic's question is, what aspect of the team does a character need to be cut from? I think that's important because, to me, it all depends. A team doesn't have one function. It has many which each turtle fills in one way or another. So for my answer, I broke it up into three main sections.
Fighting: Donnie. Face it, he's a pacifist. He would rather avoid fighting if it's possible. Even his weapon reflects that as it's more defensive and with a longer reach.
Planning: Mikey. He's great at taking orders, but not so much at making them. Most of his plans has him backed up in a corner until someone helps him or gets a lucky break.
As a side note, Leo and Donnie had a few times of conflict on who's idea what was the best course of action. Most of the time, Donnie backs down and just let Leo lead. But in the current comic line, Donnie actually sets off on his own to stop the alien invasion with the help of Shredder. (Whether or not that was the right decision for him to make, it's yet to be known.) Don't forget in the 2012 cartoon, his arguing with Leo in 'The Invasion' did risk them all getting killed. So to everyone who says Raph is the only one who causes trouble, Donnie can also be a little headstrong at times that may put the whole team in danger or fracture it.
Support: Leo. He doesn't seem to be the touchy-feely type. Donnie and Mikey would probably try to understand another's point of view and feelings. While Raph tries to keep a tough guy facade, he's the type, after a round of teasing, who says "so, who are we going to beat up for making you feel this way?"
It's not that Leo's completely stoic, he might just find discussing such things as a weakness when it comes to decision making. You can't think of "did I do the right thing" or "what if I did it another way" when you are responsible for other's lives.
I tried to cover the basics, but what I want to say is you can't simply cut one of them out without having the whole team suffer in some way.

Like it's been said by others already, each has something unique to them, which makes them all equal, so to speak. However, if I had to "kill" one, it'd be Michelangelo. I mean, Leonardo is the leader and Donatello is the scientist/engineer, so they're out of the question. Raphael is the strongest and most aggressive of the bunch, so he's useful as well. He's the "muscle" of the team, so to speak. But Michelangelo? He's... the laid back sensitive guy? How is that gonna help him out in battle? Again, I'm talking about versions such as the 4Kids series and the 2007 movie, so don't come here telling me about Mirage Mike. And I'm not saying he's useless, but of the group he does seem to be the less least important one in battle for me. Although you could argue that he's important for keeping everyone in high spirits. But hey, I had to pick a Turtle to sacrifice, as the thread asked.
On the other hand, the last Turtle I'd "kill" would be Donatello. Without Donatello, the Turtles would die quite early in the series. He's the most important Turtle, by far.

Donnie is the smartest, Leo is the best leader, Raph is the strongest, Mikey is the funniest so I say essentially Mikey is least important in a way, but then again they are all brothers and there are certain things that connect them to each other and make the entire teamwork thing work. Without Mikey things would go too serious and dramatic without any comic relief whatsoever. So they are all important to keep TMNT as TMNT we all love.

I think people will see each brings equal value to the team. It is easy to see Donatello's value perhaps above the others, but each one brings their own personality and skill set that makes them such an effective team. Not one of them is more dispensable than the other. That is a part of what makes Ninja Turtles so great.

I see them not as a team, where everybody needs a function. They are not running a business.
I see them as a team because they are a family. And in a family there is no one unimportant.
I don't think one of my sisters could be erased, because she is not important, and brings nothing to our team... that's absurd to me.

I usually think of them as four different sides of one personality. They're all different traits inherent in every person only utilized to the max or near it. Without the other, they all fall apart. None of them are dispensable/expendable.

If we're removing the obvious go-tos like Venus or Jennika or something, then it'd be between Michelangelo and Donatello.

There could be a case for that, even in Mirage. Though while he's not a pacifist, Don seems the most pacifistic of the four. If push came to shove and a big battle was looming, would you want Michelangelo or Donatello having your back?

I dunno, what's Mikey adding to the fight? Athleticism? They're all technically athletic though as far as being good fighters goes, even if he's the most "natural" athlete, or so people claim. Donnie has the skills to break through particular hurdles the rest of them couldn't make up for.
Have Donnie who can break through security in their way? They go kick some ass. Can't break through without him? Oh, well... I guess go home.

I would definitely prefer Donatello to have my back. He can more easily focus at the task at hand than Michaelangelo can. Donatello is basically a genius where as Michaelangelo gets easily distracted. I can't think of any moments where Donatello didn't wanna fight when the rest of the turtles did. I didn't read the comics though. I just watched the 87 and 2012 turtles along with all the movies.

Honestly knowing your breadth of knowledge of the subject, I'm shocked to see Donatello here. Even if we're avoiding the techno genius aspects of him, I've always seen him as holding his own in a fight and adding some calm and wisdom to the TMNT storm.
Mike's my favourite but agreed with most everyone here, as a member of a ninja clan he is most dispensable. He's got a lot to contribute but in the wrong line of work.

Honestly, my answer to this is... none. I think each and every Turtle is pretty much indispensable to the team. Leo might be the "boring" one, but he is also the guy who keeps the others safe and leads them into battle. Donnie comes up with the gadgets, Raphael is pretty much the brawler, using both anger and snarkcasm in battle and Mikey is pretty much the youthful spirit of the team and the one that brings the optimism. So yeah, I think they all are pretty valuable.
