View Full Version : Who actually liked the 2014 movie?

I know this movie gets a lot of hate but it's not like it was the worst thing the turtles ever starred in. I had a lot of problems with this movie but to me, the designs and what they were going for with them had potential which may not say much for the final product. I would take this over TMNT 3, Coming Out of Our Shells, We Wish You a Turtles Chirstmas, Turtle Toons, and that one train special.

If you liked this movie, what did you like about it?

Yeah dude. I fail to see how in a franchise that gave us Coming Out Of Our Shells, Turtles III, We Wish You A Turtle Christmas, The Next Mutation, how this is somehow a big offender. I also suspect there's people here who secretly like it but are afraid to be in the minority & would rather be amongst the majority. But yeah I'm a fan. It has its problems (like any movie) but I'll take it over the 2007 CG flick any day.

I love it. The design, April, Shredder, fight sequence, camera angles, rich colors and soundtrack. Omg the soundtrack is epic. :tlove:

This movie tie or even top the first movie for me.

I watched the 1990 & 2014 back-to-back the other night & had a blast. They make for a great double feature (also 'Batman' & 'Batman Returns' - I highly recommend watching these together in one night).

I love it.

That isn't news to anyone, my friend.

I'm on-and-off with this movie. I think there are - to say the least - extremely valid reasons for people to hate it. There are things that should have been done that weren't, and vice versa; and I think it was most definitely handed over to the wrong people. But I'm still capable of sitting through its entirety and finding satisfaction. Not a total let-down for me, but could have been executed much, much, MUCH better.

I like it a lot. It's just a fun movie with really neat action scenes. The snow mountain sequence and the fight with Shredder are probably my favorite action scenes of any movie this year honestly.

I guess I kind of like it, but it's hard not to think about what it could have been when watching it. I plan to buy it eventually, especially since I need a 3D Blu-ray so I can make use of having a 3D display, but I'd rather buy the Casey Jones DVD before I worry about that. I don't agree that it was better than TMNT 3, but definitely better than the musical tours and such.

The fight in the lair, or on the rooftop?

The turtles' lair was very well-done, and very detailed. Shame we spent so little time there.

I liked the new Master Splinter, even if all he really did was advertise Pizza Hut. He made good use of his tail.

Sachs was an interesting character, if an unnecessary one. I liked him so much that I rooted for him the whole film.

And I almost liked Raph's speech at the end, when the turtles are (supposedly) plummeting to their death. But it was used as fodder for a stupid joke the next scene, so forget that.

I feel the same, despite hating his addition (Baxter could have done exactly the same stuff in the film). But Ficthner is very charismatic.

It would have been pretty bad ass if Sacks actually did get away. The Foot gets framed for the toxin, the Turtles eliminates Shredder, and Sacks could have in the chaos snuck away with bags of money or something, or hog the glory for exposing the Foot's plans and then run for Mayor or something.

The fight in the lair, or on the rooftop?

The rooftop. Though I did like the lair fight too.

It just felt good to me. Broad daylight, you can see everything and it lasted a decent amount of time. After so many movies setting their final fights in the dark and rain or not having much of a fight at all....I dunno. It stuck out to me.

Yeah dude. I fail to see how in a franchise that gave us Coming Out Of Our Shells, Turtles III, We Wish You A Turtle Christmas, The Next Mutation, how this is somehow a big offender.

Then let me tell how I see it.

Among most of the bad versions like the second, third and arguably fourth movies and the Next Mutation the title characters were the stars and each of them tried with varying degrees of success not to treat them like one-note jokes. The stories may not have been strong or compelling (although some aspects of all of them had merit) but made general sense. There's no huge logic holes within the context of the world they created or things that really made me sit up and say "oh c'mon"

But the biggest reason is that none of the other stuff was anywhere near as high profile. Nor did it come out at a time when a lot of the franchises peers are treating them with respect and putting out movies of much higher quality. It's easy for me to brush off 'We Wish You a Turtle Christmas' and Coming Out of Our Shells Tour as harmless, silly fun because they were low key and or came at a time where it couldn't do any damage the franchise. There was no better time than now to put out a big budget movie when so many would be interested and they blew it. In my opinion it's damaged the franchise far more than all the bad versions put together.

I'm.......... not gonna post my thoughts on the movie.....

But I do think the reason many see this as a 'main offender' while we do have crap like We Wish you a Turtles Christmas is mostly because in 2014 we expected better. Now I can grant you Turtles III, but at least Turtles Christmas, New Mutation and Coming out of Our Shells weren't big budgeted movies played in theaters.

you also have to remember..Turtle Tunes,We wish you a Turtle Christmas, and Coming out of their Shells came out during the Turtle hype....it was fuel to an already ranging fire and us 90s kids ate it up

100% Honest Question:

If there's already a Private Group for this exact conversation, Why have the thread at all? Isn't that the entire point? To keep out people who would "ruin" it? Isn't that much easier? No, SparkFlash's comments don't belong in this thread, but simply having the thread be public is inviting those comments is all I'm saying.

Just an honest question/observation. It's like parking your BMW on the street with a big sign on it saying, "Please Don't Throw Eggs At My Car." Anyone who does throw the eggs is an asshole, but at the same time, you kind of have to expect it.

I really enjoyed it. The Turtles' personalities were spot on, Megan Fox actually wasn't that bad, Shredder was a total badass, the snow chase was definitely the highlight followed closely by the final showdown on the roof (including the elevator scene) and I loved the little nods to other TMNT media - Sacks originally wanting to use mutated rabbits and Mikey's Hip-Hop Christmas album.

This movie gets a lot of flack, but at least it isn't as redundant as the 2007 CGI movie.

Gunpowder
12-22-2014, 08:36 PM
After having seen the movie a few more times, I have to say Megan Fox isn't that bad. In fact, think she did fairly well, given what she had to work with - though I still think casting her was a mistake.

Plus this is my favorite version of Raphael, period. Alan Ritchson was spectacular - and even though that speech at the end was hardly necessary for the context of this particular film, it was extremely well-executed and would have been a fantastic addition, had it been more relevant. The other 3 were great, too, but I didn't like Mike/Don's CGI appearances, and I didn't like that Ploszek wasn't allowed to voice Leo.

i loved the tmnt 2014 movie cant wait for tmnt 2 2016 and i grew up on the 80s cartoon and the movies i just wish for the new movie will be like 20 mins longer than 101 mins lol

I too found its length to be off-putting. This is just about the only modern movie that I think NEEDED to be longer. (Interesting choice of avatar, by the way.)

I'm thrilled with how the turtles were portrayed. They might not have the best designs (though I don't personally think they're as horrible as a majority seem to think) and the storyline might have had it's weak spots, etc. but the turtle themselves were amazing. That was the one part I feel they totally got RIGHT. They acted exactly how I imagine them to-serious, almost adult like but with the right amount of teenage immaturity that makes them easy to relate to and not horribly obnoxious. They acted how I expected siblings to act-sometimes annoyed with each other, bickering, but always this very obvious underlying sense of loyalty and love to each other AND Splinter. They weren't self centered or whiny, they worked as a unit. Mikey made jokes about liking April, but he didn't fawn over her and his character remained purely intact, he didn't become "the turtle who likes April" which is perfect and I'm SO glad there was no weirdness between Donnie and her that I was so deeply dreading.

Anyway, yeah. The movie may have had it's flaws, but in my opinion the one part they got right was the most important part. The turtles themselves were amazing and I only hope next time we see a lot more of them than anyone else.

Haha, maybe you're right.. For people living in english speaking community, I assume TMNT was already living strong, but where I'm from there wasn't that much of people talking about TMNT before the movie... IDW comics aren't translated so only comics fans knows about it... I'm not sure if the nick cartoon was translated yet, but I wasn't hearing about it before...

IMO, negative feedback about the movie made people talk more and gain interest about the other movies, series, comics since this is their reference for TMNT.

I liked it for what it was; a mindless popcorn movie with superficial TMNT elements. If I really wanted to become invested in the turtles for a few hours, I'd go read the comics or re-watch any of the animated shows.

i can forgive some design choices, but for me it boils down to the people making the film clearly just didn't have the heart for it the same way the 1990 director and crew did. It just doesn't compare on the levels that matter to me. I'm not a diehard OT/mirage/1990 film fan in all ways, I realize and accept some of the great TMNT stuff that's outside of that sphere -- for example the Nick series which I love and think it's the best TMNT creation since the original comics, so I'm pretty sucure in my feelings and it's not just nostalgia goggles.

The way they totally botched Shredder is the most unforgivable part of the 2014 film for me. They did not go far enough in the reshoots in fixing it. it felt so terribly generic... I can't believe so many fans of the film can't see that. To me it's so painfully clear.

No surprise it's getting so many razzy noms.

Despite so many major problems, I look forward to the second film with as much optimism as I looked forward to the 2014 film. And with a very open mind. They can always address problems and make a better movie. Anything is possible.

I'd much rather have that attitude than already decide in my mind that it'll be worthless simply by being a sequel to a disappointing movie. I love TMNT and it will have my support through good times and bad.

I liked the movie pretty well when I saw it. It probably helped that it was the first Ninja Turtles thing I'd actually ever seen, so I didn't have any previous characterizations/versions to compare it to. I watched it with the understanding that it was a Michael Bay film, so it'd be action heavy instead of story-oriented (although I do think his Transformers films were a lot better than his Turtles).

I don't think it was as damaging at attracting new fans to the franchise as a lot of people think it was. If I hadn't seen it, I very likely wouldn't have given the slightest thought to watching the Nick series when I found it on tv.

That said, I'm not sure I'd watch it again now that I've been exposed to other Turtles stuff, and it wasn't even close to being my favorite movie of 2014.

Both a potential positive and negative. Great if it brings new fans in. Not so much if many decide the Bay stuff is what TMNT is and 30+ years of Turtles history and background are largely cast aside without a care.

As for the question of the thread... while maybe not the movie in it's entirety, I found things/parts/aspects I liked enough, I assume that counts for something.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had plenty of humor, great action, and a little bit of heart as well. The numerous references to the 1987 series were very nice as well. I'm very pleased to see that there was so much homage to the series that turned this franchise into a cultural phenomenon. The turtles were definitely the best things about the movie and their voices were perfect. I wish they had gotten more screen time.

For me, I only cared about how the turtles were going to turn out, and they were made nearly perfectly. I loved their design and humor.

That was my main concern too & was stoked with the result. It was a great feeling to take a hot popcorn, M&M's, Coke (and a begrudging girlfriend) into a nearly sold-out IMAX (that's a lot of damn people) & see Leo, Mikey, Donnie & Raph back on the big-screen. At the end of the day, that's all I really wanted to see. Sure, a masterpiece would've been amazing, but that would never happen under Platinum Dunes, you have to be realistic. People forget how truly bad Jonathan Liebesman's films are (I watched each one in prep for Turtles. It was a rough) and how overwhelmingly obnoxious Michael Bay's films are. I bet my mate $10 after watching the teaser trailer that it was going to be the Green Lantern of 2014. Cut to September, I'd never been happier to lose ten bucks. I don't know what people were expecting from a Liebesman/Bay joint but I'm telling you, it shouldn't have been anywhere near as charismatic & entertaining as it is. And I'm not gonna rob myself of the same joy I got watching this goofy franchise as a kid & completely write off this new movie because of getting hung up on some f**king plot flaws. If I want plot, I'll watch Inherent Vice. If the sequels are as entertaining as this one, awesome. I feel like all my Turtles needs are covered at the moment. The comics are there for the darker/more adult stories. The new films are here for action movie needs. And the Nick show is the glue that holds it all together. We're all spoilt. It's a great time to be a Turtles fan.

I saw Guardians at an advanced screening and liked it a lot (any movie that ends on Benicio Del Toro being mocked by Howard The Duck is brilliant to me). Then like a week later, the overwhelming acclaim kicked in and hasn't shut up since. I wish Guardians was the game-changer everyone makes it out to be. It's retro soundtrack makes people think they're watching something cool & they themselves are then cool if they like it (but yada yada, this is all for another topic I guess). I just feel Guardians is over-praised the same way Turtles is over-maligned.

In answer to the OP, yes I liked the movie. A lot. But when I sit back and think about it I start to annoy myself at all the things that are wrong with it.

But overall it's my second favourite TMNT film after the original. I hate the 2007 CGI one so much. Bad character design (worse...much worse than 2014 designs. So unoriginal and uninspiring). Just my opinion.

The 2014 effects are amazing, just the little things like the way Mikeys chucks hang...because they were REAL and filmed for real. I thank God that the TMNT weren't 100% CGI, I thank the production team for that at least.

Mentioning GOTG above, I watched in once in the cinema not knowing what to expect and thought it was brilliant. However I got it on DVD and on second viewing it just didn't seem quite as good as I remembered it, I don't know why. Yet I have watched TMNT2014 twice in the cinema and both times I really enjoyed it. Haven't watched it at home yet as it's not available on DVD here yet (UK). Will be buying it as soon as it's out though.

If only...if only they would've tidied up some of the plot holes this film could've been a stone cold classic...in my eyes at least!

Comparing Guardians to the new Ninja Turtles only makes sense because both are typical Hollywood popcorn flicks. But GOTG is also a well-made film in most areas while TMNT is a god-awful train-wreck that isn't even worth being called a film.

I watched this movie 8 times compared to 1 time of Guardians of the Galaxy.

So yeah.

this literally means nothing...i saw Revenge f the Fallen 5 times and Dark Knight 3 times

the amount of times you see a movie in a theater does not equal is quality

I thought both movies were pretty awful (I only saw GotG. But do I really need to watch TMNT 2014 to know it's bad everything I've heard. But GotG was okay, and it wasn't a franchise that had many different incarnations. So they stayed true to the original (I assume). It sucked. But it was okay, I guess.
I don't understand opinions.

Ditto.

the amount of times you see a movie in a theater does not equal is qualityI don't get it. Why watch something again and again if you don't like it? :-?

Yeah it just means a person has too much money, free time, and piss-poor priorities.
Or it could mean someone had fun with the film, he had a blast with his loved ones and family, that's why he keeps coming back for more than?

Quit slandering people with your idiotic blind opinion. ;) You don't know anything.

so since you say ditto..you just dont like guardians because everyone else likes it instead of tmnt?

it literally has nothing to do with the movie itself..you just want TMNT to be liked....right?

who said i didnt like it? i enjoy booms and fighting robots..sure it wasnt the best movie also i didnt have to pay so no money wasted on my end

you completely missed my point..seeing a movie x number of times in a theater by one person does not automatically make it a good movie

i saw The Muppets 17 times in theaters and i LOVE that movie...still didn't pay for 16 of them..doesn't men my 17 viewings make it the best movie of 2011

i saw "Whats you number about 30 times..and it was a god awful movie)...why? because of my one scene i was in that every one of my friends and family wanted to see me in ( still better story than TMNT 2014)

i saw TMNT once and Guardians once..and Guardians def was the better casted, written, better team and put out movie... perfect no. but def better

the same dollar amount went to both movies

and i knew nothing about GOTG before 2014, TMNT should have won..i should be singing its praises...instead i find myself ignoring almost every TMNT thing that comes my way nowadays...cringing that i have to be "Happy" when little kids ask me about the Fox movie featuring the turtles

I know more than enough to know your taste in ALL things mostly sucks, "pal". So F*** off.

Anybody who sees ANY movie 5 times or so in theaters has too much money and no priorities whatsoever. That's a fact. There's people who don't have enough money for food, and meanwhile, some people are wasting ungodly amounts of time and money watching sh*t movies.

Even GOOD movies aren't worth that kind of investment. It's in no way justifiable. At all.

Not like the Nick series or IDW comic have been doing that for the last 3 years or anything. :trolleye: This film got people talking further, sure, but most of it was negative.

To be fair, more members of the general public are more likely to have seen the movie than the Nick series or the IDW comics.

True story, though. That's a big reason why I'm more a stickler for movies, and insist that they "do it Right" and not just "do their own new take", because to the general public, the movie version is the "Real" version. Thus, movies have a responsibility to be "Iconic". Save the "Elseworlds" stuff and the wild deviations from the canon for the cartoons and spin-off comics. Films have a responsibility to be "The Best" and most iconic version of a franchise, NOT "just another version" of it.

When a movie falls into being one of the Worst versions of a franchise, well, you've got HUGE problems. Because yeah, more people are going to see it. And now, more than ever, the "general public" thinks TMNT is stupid. Can't help it, that bothers me. Yes, TMNT is kind of stupid and we're all too old to like it. Don't take such delight in smearing that all over the place, it's vulgar.

This guy gets it. ;)

Also to a lot of people, the movie won't only be the "real" version of something. It'll be the "only" version and no other version will exist to them.

Why must you all keep saying these terrible things:(
Maybe one of the reasons I'm ok with it is BECAUSE of IDW and the Nick toons. As terrible as the movie might have been (and yes I did like it) I can still go back and see any of the toons, the first 2 movies and any of the comics (barring archie cuz I just couldn't get into those) and be a happy camper.

Some of you just need to get over it and move on.

This was supposed to be a discussion for people who liked the movie, not just another place for haters to bash it. There are plenty of other threads to do that in.

I recently traded some stuff for a blu-ray of the movie to evaluate if I like it or not, and:

I have to say that the CG models have grown on me.
This may be the only film I've seen Megan Fox in where I actually liked her acting.
The handheld cinematography style worked well for that great action scene in the subway tunnel.
The turtles' personalities were different from previous incarnations, but still familiar enough.

I enjoyed it in the theater, despite being more of a 2k3 and Mirage fan. I still like it today. Nostalgia is the only thing that could cause someone to bash this movie while still liking "Secret of the Ooze."

Blind nostalgia for a franchise they like is the only thing that could cause someone to enjoy Megan Fox in anything.

I think there's a certain folly here that many of the movie's defenders as well as the creators have that they believe fans consider every version prior to the movie as worthy so it's pure nostalgia that makes us dislike the new movie.

Except that's not really true. There are several bad versions of the turtles, as someone else recently said there's sadly more bad versions than good at this point. Some are simply "bad" as they haven't aged well and some were legitimately always bad. It obviously has some fans but on the whole I think it's generally acknowledged that Secret of the Ooze is an inferior movie to the 1990 one.

Now that being said it's that bad. One can easily defend it in comparison to the new movie without nostalgia goggles. The turtles are the focus of the movie and at least have a small amount of depth in their longing to know where they come from and hoping the answer would be grander than them being an accident. The plot isn't particularly compelling, in fact it's A/B style storytelling is weak when the arc to uncover the truth of TGRI is brushed aside for Tokka and Rahzar shenanigans but it all makes sense, there no big plot or logic holes.

Even stuff like Tokka and Rahzar growing so fast and Shredder's armor also mutating isn't really that offensive in the context of the movie but there's tons of crap like that in the new movie.

It's biggest sin for me personally is the overall effect it had on the franchise. It was the first prominent version of TMNT which was sub par for it's time but because it was profitable it became acceptable to coast. Any future version could get away with being as stupid as it wanted because this was the franchise that had Vanilla Ice doing Ninja Rap. In many ways it set the standard for how people view TMNT just as the 2014 movie has done that in a much bigger way.

I loved this action flick. It's my number 3 favourite TMNT movie (losing to TMNT 1 and 2). Yeah, Megan Fox was horrible but the Turtles were cool and I loved the references to the first Ninja Turtles film. Didn't expect the terrible ratings actually.
