View Full Version : who would you choose to be director of a tmnt film?

I have a couple of ideas.

I would really want to see a tmnt movie directed by guillermo del toro. it wouldn't have to be completely based on the original comics but really inspired by them. definitely have it set in 1984 and have the creature design team from hellboy working on it. I think he would do an awesome urban sci-fi/fantasy version that wouldn't even need to leave the sewers for the first movie. the mousers push the turtles deep into the sewer discovering the other mutants along the way or something and at the end realizing that baxter stockman's strings are being pulled by shredder, and then the reason for their training is reviled. think about how awesome his version of splinter would be too.

also it would have been great if david cronenberg had made a tmnt movie back in the 80's. staying true to the comics but adding a level of body horror on the account of mutation.

....HAH! Just seeing who was paying attention. That'd be the drizzling sh*ts. I don't have a real answer. Kinda don't want any more movies.

John Favreau has a great knack for combining humor, drama and action, and incorporating CGI characters.

More importantly I'd like someone who "gets" Turtles to write the script.

Favreau, Deltoro or Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith? Really?

Even Kevin Smith hates the way Kevin Smith makes movies now.

I'm a big fan in general, especially of his earlier work, but dude's totally lost his touch. I'm glad he realized it and all but retired from directing before he slipped even further into self-parody.

I wish certain other directors would take the hint and follow suit. Big name types who make bad movies on purpose. Anybody who's only in it for the paycheck and doesn't care about the product. You know the type.

Even his older stuff is only great because of the terrific characters/dialogue, though. Even Kevin is the first one to say that all of his movies look terrible.

He's a "good director" in that he knows how to help get really great performances out of his cast, but he doesn't know how to actually set up and film a scene properly, especially anything action-wise. That's why now he's more a "hack for hire" who just writes and touches up scripts and lets other people do all the "real" work.

A few names already that I'd agree (Del Toro would be great) with but to add two more.

Zack Snyder. He actually is high profile and was a fan of the original Mirage comic.

Robert Rodriguez. He can do adult, The Desperado "trilogy" and Sin City and kid aimed pictures like Spy Kids. I think he's really "get" TMNT.

Steve Wang.

Because he was an FX guy (working on films like The Monster Squad) which you can find here https://www.facebook.com/StevewangCreatureCreator.

PLUS he directed two films that, if you combined the two, would Equal Ninja Turtles (a Real, Good Ninja Turtles movie).

One film he directed was Guyver: Dark Hero...with just a meager $500,000 who directed guys in suits into an 'R-Rated Power Ranger' style movie with practical monster suits and all (and the lead is the same guy who voiced Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games), mixed in with well done Martial Arts...if you can do that with just half a million...imagine what he can do with a much bigger budget. It shows that he can work with people in suits mixed with Martial Arts choreography.

oIRsLKwn63g

And the next film he directed was Drive with Mark Dacascos & Kadeem Hardison, an action/comedy that was done on a small $3 million budget. It showed (once again) wonderful Martial Arts choreography, using a budget well (and not splurging it), as well as fun banter/comedy/connection between the leads (that's actually funny) which should be essential for a Turtles movie.

ipxCifEHS2M

So...a Director that has used tiny as hell budgets ($500,000 & $3 million) in an Extremely Effective Manner (the money is on the screen, not wasted). A Director that knows how to direct Fight/Action Sequences, as well as dealing and Making Monsters/Suits/Creature FX. And a director that has At Least dealt in the realm of both comics (in the effect that The Guyver is based on a Manga) AND in the action/comedy genre (with Drive from 1997).

To me, Steve Wang would be the Perfect Choice.

I could actually see Del Toro or Rodriguez.

I like Snyder's movies but I don't think his style fits TMNT at all, honestly. I think his style is too "big" and I think that was already a problem with the last movie.

Making crap like Red State & Tusk is evidence that Kevin should have went with that whole Retirement thing.

If you want to see a selfish idiot played by Justin Long get turned into a Walrus by Michael Parks who has 20 minute monologues...and then add an annoying as hell Johnny Depp in a faker than hell French Accent playing a Canadian, where everyone in Canada says 'Aboot'...then I guess Tusk is for you. That movie sucked.

Robert Rodriguez hasn't been involved in a good film since Planet Terror. He produced Predators and that movie sucked. Sin City 2 sucked. And the Machete films sucked. No thanks on Rodriguez.

Zack Snyder screwed up big time with that terrible Man of Steel flick.

And Del Toro stank up the place with Pacific Rim which was boring as hell. The only good scene was the fight in Hong Kong (even with that stupid 'out of the blue sword' thing.

I liked 'Tusk' too. Attended a special midnight screening knowing very little about it beforehand and... whoa. Didn't know the guy would actually be turned into a Leatherface-version of a walrus. Didn't know Johnny Depp would be popping up halfway through & taking over the movie. I fully understand why some would hate it but it was instantly one of my fave cult horror comedies.

Anyways, my dream director - Brad Bird. Others would be Gareth Evans, Jon Favreau, Kim Jee-Woon, Jody Hill, David Gordon Green, Peter Travis & Drew Goddard.

(anyone remember when John Woo was gonna direct an all-CGI animated movie in the early 2000's? That would've been sweet).

Not to get too off topic, but have you seen "Red State" or "Tusk"? As a longtime Kevin Smith fan, I was worried about the direction his career was taking, but I thought those two films were incredible. I even read some reviews from folks who DIDN'T like those movies where they admitted they couldn't stop thinking about them.

And visually, he's definitely turned a corner. Those two movies are wonderfully shot. Not just good for a Kevin Smith movie, but GOOD good.

If your last impression of Kevin was "Cop Out" then you have to give his newest stuff a shot.

Favreau, for the same reason.

Barron, because he's the one who got it the most right.

Rodriguez, because he excels at making movies that entertain the whole family.

Nieli, because he knows the source material well.

YES. BARRON. He knocked it out the park first time around. It would've been awesome if he had two different films on his resume both called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He gave the thumbs up to the new Turtles but thought the plot "didn't feel in any way real" so it's not likely he'd be interested in directing new TMNT films with bigger more sci-fi-ish plots.

Exactly why he should make the film. Superhero films are about good vs evil, and yes, that is boring. Good thing the turtles are not superheroes.

But, seriously, if you want a hard edged, HBO series with an adult perspective on the Turtles, Fincher is the man.

If you want a campy, schlocky, low budget, goofy film; Lloyd Kaufman is your choice. Not a judgement call, just a fact.

If you like brainless, sloppy, storytelling, with big make-up and anamatronic set pieces that distract you from the shoddy acting; go with Del Torro.

I know you think so. This is where we disagree. It's a pedantic discussion, but an important distinction to be made as far as I'm concerned.

This is likely one of the reasons you're on side with PDTMNT, and I am not.

You think of them as super powered entities, altruistic, concerned with the safety of humanity; to me they are child soldiers, trained to kill, for revenge. They are scrupulous at best, anarchists at most.

Our ideal turtles stem from very different iterations of who the turtles are. I doubt you'd have been pleased if they'd made the movie I wanted to see.

Superheroes can be Mutants too.

its about what superheroes ARE actually..and what tmnt are NOT...
super heroes go out patrolling the city because they have sworn to themselves for whatever reason to PROTECT the city they are living in.so, it is a very basic dichotomy created right from that point on:
superhero=good.Evildoers=bad.

the turtles however are misscreations, brought to life(bipedal life at least) by an accident.they are outsiders, living in the shadows in the exclusion of all else.
they are merely falling into situations in which they make decisions based on what they think is fair(different than to have sworn to protect 'fair citizens'...)
I think the turtles are so much more interesting also because they seem to strive for balance, for enlightenment and matters of this nature.you know, stuff that is actually worth something...

I think we've all had enough of The Dark Knight Returns, thank you very much.

Single most overrated Batman story ever made. Although, Tim Burton is the single most overrated filmmaker in the history of the universe, so maybe that would fit like a glove.

Seriously. If we HAVE to lick Frank Miller's nuts, then at least lick 'em over Year One, which was actually good.

Going solely by DKR, it's amazing Batman has any time to think since he's constantly goddamn talking to himself. In the most overblown, pompous, self-aggrandizing manner possible. You half expect him to say, with complete earnestness, some stupid sh*t like... "I drink of their fear... and it is delicious. I paint a masterpiece with their blood as a child would with finger paints. Their bones breaking is my symphony, their screams, their Terror, my Magnum Opus. And when my War is over, and I again retreat to the darkness... The Cave... I am at peace... for I know the time will soon be at hand... for me to finally void my bowels in peace... for the 7-11 rest room at 3am is no place for a Creature of the Night to defecate. The war continues, but this time... it is between my strength of will, and that burrito I had at 7:30. I AM THE NIGHT!!!"

I borrowed a copy of the book from the library in summer '12. I enjoyed it, but there was a LOT of text. I don't mind that really, but I only want to be reading THAT much text in a book, not a comic book or graphic novel.

It's a shame that Frank Miller wrote that and some of Daredevil. I really hate to praise the man. Sin City was good as well but pretty overrated.

Leo656
12-21-2014, 05:28 PM
Anybody who can't see how overblown and frankly Bad that book is, is seriously kidding themselves. It's All Hype. I never DIDN'T sh*t on it. It's average at best. What makes it Terrible, is that people swear it's the Best Batman Story Ever when it's SO not even close. I could give you a half dozen O'Neil/Adams Batman stories that make it look like the crudely drawn, over-blown, needlessly drawn-out trash it really is. The entire thing insists upon itself and its own brilliance. It's SO masturbatory. I don't know why more people can't see that.

Year One was better. Mostly because the story gets to the goddamn point and doesn't jack itself off over how "bad-ass" it is. I never read his Daredevil work but I heard that was good. But I've read a lot of his other stuff. He's... he's Not Good.

I think Frank Miller's entire body of work speaks for itself at this point. One or two pieces of work aside, he's an idiot, and a hack, and just because he ushered in the "Grim N Gritty" 80s doesn't mean he's actually good at Anything At All. His stuff just sucks. I mean, some of Sin City was pretty good. Even THAT is a ton better than DKR. And there are a ton of writers/artists who can do his exact same gimmick a ton better than he can.

I was kinda the same, in a way. My whole life, hearing "DKR is Tha Best Evar dawg!" Finally read it when I was like, 10, and I honestly thought it was crap. Read it again, and I hated it less, but I grew up reading stuff by O'Neil, Dixon, Adams, Aparo... you know, stuff that was Good. I was totally spoiled. The only impression that book made on me, is that it really doesn't earn its reputation. It does a decent job creating an atmosphere. That's It.

I've read it a hundred times and I still do read it; it's not Nuclear Garbage, it's fun to read sometimes, but it's Not That Great. The SEQUEL is Nuclear Garbage, but that's another story.

what about a terry Gilliam ninja turtles movie? that would be interesting.

Gilliam is hit and miss. Some great, some utter disasters. Again, a trippy far-out directorial choice, that prefers surreal to grounded.

He's a bit like Tim Burton by way of Joel Schumacher, with a pinch of social commentary.

I know what you mean. Sometimes people do like something just because it's critically acclaimed. I'm not saying that happens with THDK but that sort of thing does go on.

FACT: Most people who swear DKR is a "masterpiece" have only read about 5 comics.

Yeah, possibly. Like I say I think it was pretty good but certainly no masterpiece. I started reading comics properly circa 2006. I am obviously nowhere near many people in terms of knowledge of the medium, but I know a fair amount.

You know absolutely nothing about me, sir, so I'll excuse your blasphemous assumption. :)

I'd actually assume it was going to be sh*t and wait to be proven wrong. I haven't swung from Tim Burton's nuts since I was 11 years old. He has made exactly Four Movies that I thoroughly enjoyed:

- Batman
- Batman Returns (and even that movie has a TON of sh*t wrong with it; it's easily his worst "Good" movie)
- Beetlejuice
- Pee-Wee's Big Adventure

He has Made One Other movie I Mostly Enjoy:

- The Nightmare Before Christmas (It's a fun little movie, but wholly undeserving of the Cult that has built up around it over the years. Nothing "wrong" with it, but I HATE to see things become consistently overrated)

I've mostly hated everything else he has ever done. If I see one more black and white striped spiral pattern in my entire lifetime I'm going to vomit.

You've been here a fair amount of time now, so I'm genuinely curious where you attained the evidence for your assumption I'd be excited about that kind of announcement. C'mon, bro, you pay attention. Do I act AT ALL like a sheep? "F*** Tim Burton" has been my official position on that guy ever since I read his god-awul Superman ideas. That guy's INSANE. It used to be cute, now it's just annoying. Everything he does is pretentious bullsh*t. Him and Miller WOULD make a great pair, for all the wrong reasons, but I wouldn't want to see it. Unless it was the kind of circumstance where they were both sealed in a capsule and rocketed into space or something. Had more than enough of both of 'em.

Another Keaton/Burton Bat flick would be interesting but only if it was the loosest damn interpretation of that book you ever saw. And that probably would be the case, since his Batman movies had next to nothing to do with Batman in the first place.

No need to apologize, we're having fun. :) People can disagree and still be pals and mess around.

Yes dude I know you're not a sheep, I see your contrary takes on nearly everything's that's popular in mainstream entertainment & enjoy reading them lol But f*ck, I'd kill to see Keaton be Batman again. He was such a pimp in the role. Growing up loving Burton's duel Batman movies, seeing them reunite for TDKR would be a dream (Keaton even said recently he'd be down if Burton was). I'm curious though, what would be your dream Batman flick?
And yeah Davetello, I own all the mentioned books except 'Gotham by Gaslight'. Didn't you reckon the Year One animated movie was kinda.... flat? An exciting book/unexciting cartoon. Not even Cranston saved it.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I feel this way about the usual suspect of directors brought up. So many people are so surface when they talk about what they like /dislike. They assume the director is at the heart of everything they loved in a film, or the sole individual responsible for it's demise.

It's costume designers, art directors, cinematographers etc...

But Burton? Burton loves jailhouse swag, and his wife, and Johnny Depp. Auteur to the enth degree, colorblind and idiosyncratic to a fault.

It's cool if that's someones thing, but damn son, Helena Bohnam Carter is not the ideal casting for every bloody female character ever, nor is Depp the perfect Everyman, any more than Adam Sandler is funny.

Seriously. Fan casting makes my teeth ache. Copy pasta to the infinite.
Reductive, impoverished ideas, wrapped in a wank for the last movie they liked.

A heartfelt guttural blargh to it all.

I know it will never happen, but stylistically, toneally, from every angle I can fathom, he would be "the guy" my top pick.

TMNT would suddenly be taken seriously. It would do for TMNT what Burton did for Batman.

Not everyone's cup of tea - I get that, but we've had numerous schlocky, wack, low budget, and riddiculous takes. It's time to bring the serious.

Similar to the tonal shift in Turtles Forever. When the Original Turtles show up, the authenticity is palpable.

I want, personally, a live action, return to source.

From what I've heard, the two-part animated adaptions of TDKR is said to be better than the books because their is less monologuing.

B-Man
12-21-2014, 07:14 PM
I don't know about better but the exclusion of monologues certainly makes it feel less pretentious (many have argued it dumbs it down but whatever). It's a fun animated action flick worth checking out that can be watched in two parts or as one big one, up to you.

I enjoy TDKR, But I'm gonna have to agree with you as Far as there being way better Batman story's and it being over rated. It did help get Batman away from the goofy tone so that counts for something, And I think Frank miller is extremely over rated too.

This is now a Batman thread. Reported for going off-topic.

Just messing mate. I don't know that guy but he can't be any worse than the last ones.

hahaha. terry gilliam directed Brazil, 12 monkeys, Fear and loathing in las vegas, tideland, the imaginarium of dr. parnarious, time bandits,

Joss Whedon. I'm sure he could make a high quality tmnt movie, he had some great action in Firefly so I'm sure he could put good action towards the turtles too.

that would be awesome. even better if joss whedon wrote it and re teamed with jean-pierre jeunet as director.

Gilliam's also known for having done the animation for "Monty Python's Flying Circus."

There was a point when he was supposed to direct a big screen version of Gaimen and Pratchett's "Good Omens" but...because his stuff is so hit or miss regardless of the stellar quality of his work, he couldn't find a distributor and so it never got made.

Alas.

Batman is such an overrated Mary Sue of a character that I just...I'll just be over here with my Original Animated Series dvds.

Would Gilliam make a good turtle movie?
Oh man...he'd make a KICK ASS "Dale Evans McGuillicutty" movie. I...seriously kind of want that now. Badly.

I'd love to see Cuaron do the "Soul's Winter" story arc.

Okay...new meme:

The TMNT is going to be a miniseries on HBO.
Who does which story arc. All universes acceptable.

I want Peter Jackson to do the Renet/TimeCube issues, because that man knows how to blend fantasy and live action really damn well.

if its an hbo mini series i' want it to be guillermo del toro or alex proyas doing an original story arc based on or influenced by the mouser story. never leaving the sewer. add an urban fantasy myth vibe to it, include casey jones already established with the turtles, definitely put leatherhead in there maybe even have baxter turn into the fly at the end. but yeah it would center around the search for splinter threw out the sewers because of a mouser attack. the rat king could easily be involved in this also.

How exactly did he "ruined" it?

PoA is the best HP movie imo. Btw what's your fave HP movie then?

I don't mind a musical tmnt movie if that's the case. :tlol:

I just didn't like it. I hated that they never mentioned that Lupin, Peter, Sirius, and James were the Marauders and created The Marauder's Map. That was one of the biggest things that bugged me.

Fave HP movie is a hard one to choose, but I did like Order of the Phoenix a lot. Deathly Hallows part 2 would have been awesome if they would have put in the speech Harry gives to Voldemort about how his plan utterly failed, but they shelved that and had Harry jump off some tower with Voldemort saying, "Let's finish this the way we started it, Tom, together!" I laugh every time I hear that line because it sounds so damn cheesy. Sure, the movie was fine, but I think having that part with Harry's speech would have been better.

And to get back on topic for directors, definitely David Yates. I'd love to see Ciro involved in some way as well since he's been doing such a fantastic job with the Nick series.

I do like that one but I've only seen it a couple times and I forgot about it because I generally want Depp to get hit by a bus.
