Turtle Tattoos and Shell markings

I can't believe I missed them, but when I saw the movie in the theater I did not see all the tattoos on the turtles. Now that I have the bluray I've been trying to figure out who has them and what they are.

So far I have seen that Leo has one around his left bicep that appears to be turtles in a row with lines above and below them.

Mikey has one possibly on his shoulder that is a large turtle shell. I can't be sure yet. I could see him following Leo and getting one similar to his.

Raph appears to have no tattoos, but maybe a brand of a symbol. I'm not sure what the symbol is or if it's that symbol he's been spray painting onto buildings.

As for Donnie, I can't seem to see any. I guess being the smart and medical one he realizes that they are unsafe maybe and decided not to get any. Maybe since he has so much stuff on him they figured they'd leave Donnie more basic in the tattoo and shell decor dept.

I'm not sure how they did these tattoos or who did them. I guess Splinter could have done them, but they were young with they got them.

As for the shells, I can't make out any of the symbols on their shells, but they have them in their colors, I'd be curious what the symbols mean. I don't think Donnie has one though. I still have to watch the movie again, I'll try to freeze frame better scenes to make out what the tattoos and symbols are.

I did see a picture of Raph's shell and it had the symbol and all the duct tape, but also "Mikey was here" was painted on it too, but I didn't see that in the movie though, so maybe it's a doctored picture.

It's cool that they have tattoos, I don't think they do in any other incarnation.

Still surprised they gave Leo tattoos. lol I hope they're at least supposed to be of some kind of personal significance. Hard to say what they're of though. The obvious one on the lower right arm...I still haven't a clue. And the upper left (and right?) are so barely noticeable. A couple bands like on his right wrist, but other than that they're covered up. Maybe we'll see them better at some point in the next movie.

Now Mikey I'm not surprised at all. And Raph having the brand kinda suits him. Really, if they gave one to Donnie it would be fun if it was some kind of scientific symbol or something along those lines. DNA chain, MC² or whatnot.

Really had been hoping these little touches would have been pointed out/explained by the movie in some way. (Or at the very least explained online eventually... Though by this point I doubt the makers even have an explanation.)

I had no idea there were that many on Leo. I got a feeling that they represented the turtles as a family. After having watched the movie several times since it's Bluray release, I get a feeling they wanted to cool up Leo and make him tougher rather than how he's usually portrayed. Although, he's the one who hugs Splinter's finger when he's tucking them into bed as if already he's becoming the "teacher's pet".

I wasn't surprised by Mikey and Raph having markings, but it would have been cool to find at least one on Donnie. Maybe there is and it's just hard to see. ;)


I would love to see April pointing out the tattoos and they explain what they mean, but there wasn't nearly enough bonding between them for that to happen this movie.

There's been a few threads dedicated to the tattos and the Kanji markings on their shells, bandannas and such, although... They might have been victims of the mass closing of movie threads when things where on their most heated.

Personally not a fan of the tattos, it seems a bit out of place. Or the excessive use of Kanji markings on them with cutesy catch words (rage, honor etc) feels a bit cheap. It would have been a lot more effective with visually clearer words and maybe phrases instead of simple kanji you find in a Tatto parlor or a quick google search.

They're still there, you just have to find it.
