As of now, I don't really have a favorite female character.

Who is your favorite/best female character, and why?

Irma doesn't count.

April and Karai are about the same to me.

Karai. Background female #2 is a runner up though.

Like April sans mind powers ok, but she really needs to take a step back. I was starting to like human Karai, but then I guess the same principal exists in fictional worlds as does the real one: s*** happens.

Maybe Tea Time Girl.

April is my favorite (this is my favorite version of the character, sans psychic powers) but I do think Karai is done better.

Karai, definitely. She's got more background and I really like the way they've handled her.

I think Karai is the best constructed of the female characters. She's sassy, clever, and pretty darn smart, with a well thought out background, without being a heartless shrew that a lot of television bad girls are made out to be. I'm pretty fond of April, though, personality-wise, because we share a few personality traits, and because she's pretty brave (although sometimes I wish she'd be a bit smarter about picking when and where to become involved). The one thing that really bugs me about her is how unnecessarily loud she can be. Literally. Running a few blocks shouldn't make you sound like you're about to shrilly wheeze up a lung. Oh well. :P

Ice Cream Kitty, I believe Michelangelo called it a girl...

Though with so few females to choose from, it's not really a fair decision. We need to wait on the inevitable addition of characters such as Renet, Mona Lisa, one of the fox mutants (either Alopex or Ninjara), a real Irma, Angel (likely in the guise of Nobody) and probably some version of Venus, and possibly the introduction of Casey's sister.

Just for fun I counted the list of characters on Wikipedia, the show has (including cameos and forthcoming while ignoring the ones from the cartoon parodies) roughly 80 characters (I lost the exact count), how many are females?

Well, there's April, Karai, Bigfoot, Renet, the little girl who had tea with Leo and a TV host. The rest is questionable however, I think ICK was female, Kraang Prime has a femenine voice, Irma is questionable, there's the android, the wasps might have been female based how wasps are in real life, there's the mutated April clone, the mom thing which may just have shapeshifted into a female and might not be female itself.

So including the questionable ones, the female/male ratio is roughly 1 female in 6 characters. Ignoring the odd ones it's 1 in 13. Roughly 7% of the characters are female if you ignore questionably females, if you include them it's 16%.

"But what about the important ones?" you say, "What's the figure when it just comes to important characters?". Well, Ignoring all the monsters of the week and rather expendable recurring characters like the PDs and Murakami, the ratio is: 2 in 6, 17% and that included Irma...

Kraang Prime has a femenine voice, ..

For the last time Kraang Prime is male, Ciro actually said this. Likewise Kraang Prime is intended to be the original Krang who was also male, so it makes sense.

Can we please just have Angel/Alopex/Mona Lisa in the show already and have them not be love interests or just cameos. (or new girls..IDC)

I fear for Renet.....T-T I want to believe she will be more than Mikey's crush...but I refuse to be hopeful.

Oh god, she's gonna be the Megan Fox of 2012.

I'd really rather it was her that was crushing, but given Mikey's affections toward others and general gregarious nature, I assume that prob won't be the case.

Anyway... So what are the choices so far anyhow.

April
Karai
Irma (?)
Ms. "Rocket Arms" Campbell
April Derp(s)
Ice Cream Kitty
Tea Time Girl
Mom-Thing (?)
Dr. Cluckingsworth
(edit) Bigfoot (?)
[Renet confirmed]

Am I forgetting any...

Really show? Really? lol *sigh*

Edit: Just realized the frogs kind of came across as being a colony of one gender... one female voice in one short line from an unnamed random frog could have helped that.

I'm thinking Mikey will act like how BeastBoy did with this crush on Terra.
I can't remember how that went down...but I don't remember it being annoying.......

I just hope it's a thousand times more subtle and charming than Apriltello...I mean if you HAVE to have Renet/Mikey moments at least make the experience bearable......or better yet enjoyable.

Some frogs will switch gender depending on the sex breakdown of the group. So...maybe some of them did that?

Anyway...Mom Thing was AWESOME.
If we'd gotten more than one episode with her, I'd have totally voted for her instead of ICK.

Really? It's just one of those bizarre Nature is Weird things.
I can't say how all amphibians do it, but the Marine Toad has an extra gonad that comes into play should the usual set get damaged.

It's part of the basic conceit of Jurrasic Park as well. They take the gaps in the dinosaur DNA and fill them using frog DNA, which then gives them the ability to swap as the environment allows and then breed unrestricted.

Karai, easy. She's easily the most interesting and well-developed female character -- and one of the most interesting and well-developed characters on the show as a whole, really -- and Kelly Hu is great. Going forward, it'll depend on what they do with Snake Karai (which I kinda hope is short-lived).

I like April, but she could do with some better writing/characterization, IMO. There's potential there but I don't feel like they've really lived up to it.

But man, the show really needs more women. The property as a whole has had that problem, but now's the time to address/fix it.

I sincerely hope that mutating her was not because the writers had run out ideas on what to do with her.

Had she not been mutated then what have been the next thing for her? Seriously what else could they have done? Is being reunited with her true father is just when of those things that has be put on hold like the Capritello triangle thing until the end of the series?:ohwell:

I'm still kind of sad what it did to that storyline. Sure it made it an interesting twist that they will hopefully continue to write for, but... I'd really looked forward to that day she "came home" and was still looking forward to that whole situation with their now larger family and the new dynamics that would be established. As well as maybe seeing a friendship develop between April and Karai.

Well, who knows, I guess. No one still has any clue that she's a shape shifter and can still appear human, I hope they don't put that potential revelation aside as a minor forgotten detail.

I'm starting to think that Ciro has a problem with fathers and daughters being reunited. Between April and Karai, they get no parental love.

I would actually really like to see a friendship between Karai and April; I think it'd be a nice little dynamic. And I'm sure April could use a gal pal now that Irma's gone Kraang.

I think that he has more of a problem with having more then one girl being part of the main cast which goes what he said earlier about already having two girls representing the bad and the good of both sides.

But I'm going off topic again and I apologize.:(

One of interesting things that can be said is that none of the female characters whether they be mutant wasp or a brainy chicken had never really gotten the humanoid female animal (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumanoidFemaleAnimal) look and that something to be praise.

I mean even Snake Karai avoid looking like something from a furry magazine or...scaly? Whatever.

In fact I really like her design because it makes sense of what a snake needs to perceive the world in way that only a snake can understand.

Voted for Karai.

Though still not a fan of her design, she certainly seems like one of the few characters with consistently good writing IMO, thus making her interesting.

Personality-wise, she's definitely a refreshing take from her predecessors, who were played up to be more straight/serious and it actually makes sense since she is meant to be more near the Turtle's age whereas the others were, what, maybe in their early-to-mid 20's?

So it's rather unfortunate for me to hear and see that she became another victim of the show's insistence of mutating characters because of:

a) Obligatory "to sell toyz."

b) Shock value and prolong her arc and eventual turn to the good side.

c) Give Shredder another (pathetic) reason to hate Splinter.

But that's not the only thing. I think her finding out and accepting the truth of her heritage could've been handled in a more interesting way. Have her face a sort of moral dilemma if you will. I'll try to explain.

When it comes to deciding who she should ultimately be with, you immediately think she ought to be with Splinter and ditch Shredder for lying to her all these years. However, I have to stop you right there. Perhaps there could've been more doubt she'd be accepted into their family. Should it ever cross her mind that maybe Splinter wouldn't want her back? You'd say, "well, of course he'd want her in his life again" but the bigger question would be "would the Turtles accept her as their sister after all the s*it she gave them?" Well we know Leo would since he's the one who's had the most interaction with her prior and the one to believe she was a good person just working on the wrong side. But as for Raph or Don, definitely would take some time to trust her. I include Don since he probably still holds a grudge over the events of Target O'Neil. Mikey...I dunno, probably indifferent.

This might've also given some opportunity to give her something positive about her time with Shredder besides the obligatory "he raised me" fact. Don't just tell us he's your father, actually show it. I'm not asking for entire episode dedicated to this here, just maybe little flashbacks/memories she has of him and her together actually being close like any father-daughter would be. Doing things you expect a parent and child would do. That sort of thing.

Though in order to have something like that would've required Shredder to be more multi-layered and 3-dimensional than he has been in this show. I so would've liked a sort of Mother Gothel-Rapunzel dynamic from Tangled. You have a villain who kidnapped a child from their birth parents and psychologically controls/constrains that child for entirely selfish agendas, but not have it be outside the realm of possibility that this parent did gain some genuine, non-synthetic love towards said child. This was something that seemed attempted with Shredder with maybe trying to convince himself that she is HIS daughter because it's his way of erasing any symbolic connection he makes towards Yoshi with her. But in terms of moments where he actually, maybe, might've come off as a decent dad towards her? Nope. So I find it very difficult to understand his concern and panic upon seeing her get mutated like any parent would over something happening to their child while understanding why it might've been an easy choice on Karai's part to choose Splinter over Shredder once the secret was out.

Maybe after the return to new york I can see more of Karai while she's not on the bad side.
