View Full Version : How many callbacks to the 80s show

So I have noticed that one of the big flaws people think the show has is that it does too many things that the 80s show has done and they want it to be its own thing.
The only ones that I have kept tack of are the Party Wagon Baxter becoming a fly and Bebop and Rock steady. What are the others

The way the Kraang look is similar to Krang. Also the frequent mutants is very 80s but I like it all. I don't get why people complain about that . It's almost like they just want another 2k3, which was my least favorite animated version due to lack of mutants. I think they have a great balance of borrowing from all the variations of the turtles. You want to really see a really heavy use of the 80s series? Then you should read the IDW serie s if you have not already. They have Krang, Beebe, Rocksteady, and a technodrome.

Let's see... Dimension X, mutants everywhere, certain kinds of humor, lots of wacky vehicles (such as the Party Wagon & Turtle Blimp), character development that goes forgotten after the episode it takes part in, the love of pizza, colored bandanas, The Technodrome, a "fifth turtle" TMNT fanboy character (Timmy), Splinter starting off as being Hamato Yoshi, April in yellow,
& of course, character choice. To name a few:
Metalhead
"Kraang"
Bebop
Rocksteady
Mondo Gecko
Muckman
Baxterfly
"Wingnut" (though that's splitting hairs)

As for point 1, no, not at all. The OT (& the Archie comics, which was a spin-off series) was the only universe to be so mutant heavy. Mirage, the film series, Next Mutation, etc. They had a few, but it paled in comparison. It wasn't just the 4kids show that was (fortunately) light on mutants.
& I dunno what show you've been watching, but this too has Bebop, Rocksteady, & a Technodrome...
Anyway, I think the Fred Wolf complaints mostly stem from the overabundance of mutants (for which Shredder is largely responsible) & humorous tone, which has gotten a heavier focus in favor of action as time goes on, much like the old cartoon. As far as I know, Playmates is responsible for virtually all of that.

I should really not read some of there since I have not even watched season 2 yet. LOL

You know, tbh, I don't feel that the OT had a lot of mutants. To me, the 2k12 show is trumping it.

In 87 show the main mutants were my henchmen Bebop and Rocksteady. in 2003 i didnt have any mutants until Hun mutated into a turtle at the end of the series in turtle forever. So 2 mutants in the OT 1 at the end of 2k3 and now i already have 6 mutants henchmen.(Tiger Claw Xever Chris Baxter Bebop Rocksteady). Is that why people are complaing about?

Well the idea that the 4Kids didn't have a bunch of mutants isn't quite true.
True that there were not a lot of animals mutated through the Utrom ooze, we did however get the underground mutants, the Shredder clones (though clearly not actual clones of Shredder, let's just call them that) and all of those things that came out of the fake alien invasion.

The OT had more than 2 mutants. Way more.

He's a 12 year-old who googled the OT and barely read it. He's just trying to be edgy.

I still don't feel the OT had many mutants snd in a way Fly Baxter wasn't a mutant. He was thrown into an incinerator by Krang and Shredder, but a fly got mixed in.
Anyone have a list of mutants to compare it to the Nick series?
Only ones popping to mind right off are:
Bebop
Rocksteady
Punk Frogs
Groundchuck
Dirtbag
Mondo Gecko
Tokka
Rahzar
Slash
Bebop's ice monster
And the Havoc guys, but the gaps are far and in between mostly as they seemed to deal with mad scientists and mobsters. 200 eps this show had. And I still feel that the OT didn't have as many mutants or mutant plots as the Nick series. I know I've forgotten some, so please feel free to add them.

Also Kraang Prime is intended to be the "Real" Krang as in the one from the OT reimagined.
His Android body resembled the old cartoons, he lived in the Technodrome in Season 1, he had a brief alliance with Shredder and he's the leader of the Kraang.

Fly Baxter counts. It may not have been mutagen that did it but he is still a mutant.

Fly Baxter counts. It may not have been mutagen that did it but he is still a mutant.I don't see how. His genes were spliced with a fly's. He wasnever exposed to mutagen. They were trying to kill him. He was turned in the same way as the movie, minus a transporter. It was a homage to that since the remake had been out recently with Jeff Goldbloom.
For me, I just don't count OT Baxter as a traditional mitant. I'm only going by those affected by mutagen, like how in the 2k12 show, all of the mutants seen were affected by coming in contact with mutagen.

You can go by whatever but scientifically speaking he was mutated. A mutant is an organism or a new genetic character arising or resulting from an instance of mutation, which is a base-pair sequence change within the DNA of a gene or chromosome of an organism. As for your list of mutants that are in both the Nick and OT versions you forgot Mutagen man.

You guys also forgot Mona Lisa! Seriously, you can mention Mutagen Man and Mondo Gecko, but forget the only FEMALE mutant in the series??!! (And arguably one of the most popular?) Sheesh, what's this fandom coming to??

When did Mona Lisa show up in the Nickelodeon cartoon? (Also, Mona Lisa was in one single episode and was never mentioned again).

Be nice to the crazy person, just let him believe he's grenade victim turned shark monster.

Fly Baxter was a mutant. Just as Leonardo and Wolverine are both mutants. Their mutation came about through different means, but regardless, their DNA was altered - "Mutated" - at a base level causing abnormal physical traits to manifest. Baxter's cells and his DNA weren't mutated through the same means as the Turtles, Splinter, Bebop and Rocksteady, but he is a mutant nonetheless.
