View Full Version : Has Seth Green improved as Leonardo?

During the first few Season 3 episodes I couldn't get into Seth Green as Leonardo, but that might also be because Leo didn't have many lines in the first few episodes.

However the last couples of eps from Chimera, Spirit Quest onward I've really got into Leonardo's new voice. Either Seth Green improved and settled into the character or I'm just used to it now, I really like it. It also fits storywise with Leo growing up a bit.

Like I said before, it's not a bad voice for Leo, it's just a bit jarring when compared to Biggs and Dominique. I prefer Seth more because it makes Leo sound more like the Leo that I know as opposed to the inexperienced leader that was the first season.

Where is the option "I never had an issue with Seth's voice as Leo."?

This is a biased poll...

It's growing on me and feels like it suits a Leo who acts a bit older now. Has helped that he's is getting back to having a bit more dialogue again.

Seth has exceeded my expectation. His performance has been stellar since Vision Quest, Return to New York was even better, and his line "LET HER GO AND I'LL LET ALL OF YOU WALK AWAY ALIVE!" in Serpent Hunt was epic! I doubt Jason/Dominic could pull off that deep serious tone like how Seth did.

Shark_Blade
02-07-2015, 04:44 PM
I'm sure they could if they were given that line.

Jason Biggs had many great lines in the past anyway. I.e.:

"Shredder is lying to you. Splinter would never hurt an innocent. Your grudge is with me. Stay away from my brothers, and my Sensei, understood? Believe me, Karai.

Your post is pointless. The thread exists to gauge opinions on Seth's voice after settling into a good chunk of the season.

I think he's more palatable now that he's given Leo a slightly higher register, but he doesn't seem to put any emotion into it, really. His Leo comes off as way too stiff compared to Dom & Jason. I miss their inflection.

I think that he has shown lots of improvement since he started, but I've never really had a problem with it.. His voice has a nice leadership and cartoon feel to it. It also has some warmth in it as well.

Eh, when first hearing he was taking over, I didn't think i would have an issue. I generally like Seth Green and anything he did, and the roles I have seen him in, (Without a Paddle and Enemy of the State are the movies I remember him most) I thought he would deliver a great Leo.

But when he first came on, he was a bit jarring, and I honestly have yet to hear him talk enough to guage a true impression. For right now, I am disappointed with his voice acting of Leo. I'm not going to vote yet, I think I will wait till the Dark Raph episode comes to make my decision, because he might have smoothed out by then. But for now, he's too gruff. He's about as irritating as Raph's voice was in 2k3 for me.

I never had a problem with Seth's voice either. A little jarring at first, perhaps, but it was never a big issue.

I think he's slowly improving, in that he seems more natural in how he voices the character than when he first started. I'm kind of in an awkward spot where Seth's voice still seems a bit off to me, but re-watching episodes with Jason's voice in it throws my brain off as well. I do miss Jason's voice, because it seemed to fit the mid-teens attitude that the other three turtles still possess. However, since they've made Leo more mature to match the voice, I don't find him unfitting.

The fact that the turtles mean so much to him doesn't hurt my opinion of him either.

I'm actually still getting used to it. If I watch earlier episodes and listen to Biggs then hop to season 3 the difference is strange. I think Jason Biggs had a better teenage voice than Seth Green does. But Green's voice isn't terrible for Leo either. Sometimes it sounds good. Lol! I thought it was funny when the show just wrote off Leo's voice change as throat damage from the battle with Shredder. I'm like, erm, no dat's just Seth Green, guys xD

Galactus
03-02-2015, 08:51 PM
I never had much of a problem with it either. Yeah it's a bit jarring but I think the fact that the character's voice box was damaged in the story and sounds different being addressed in the story helped. I don't know if it's getting better or if my opinion is mirroring the character becoming more confident. That being said I think Biggs and his interim replacement did Leo better.

Just out of curiosity does anyone who follows the production aspect of the show know why they want celebrity voice actors? I can at least see why they might seek ones with really distnictive voices like Roseanne Barr and Gilbert Gottfried but it's not like kids care if Leo is the Dr Evil's son or the guy who dry humped a pie.

I can only guess that they do this to intrigue the parents of the next generation of kids who are watching the show. It might appeal to them too. Make it interesting to older fans that celebrities are doing it too, perhaps.

Yeah, he definitely improved. For me personally, the episode "Eyes of the Chimera" was the first episode that really convinced me of his voice. He played a great role as Leo who was worried about his own abilities but eventuallly overcame his doubts. From that point on I realized I had become fully used to Seth's voice for Leo.

I still like Jason Bigs and Dominic Catambrone as well, I'm just glad I like Seth's voice now too.

i like him and am getting use to it. my only issue is some of the lines he does seem flat or "matter of fact" in serpent hunt in the beginning when they return to the pizza shop lair and leo says we got something for you too master splinter . and hands him the photo of his family. idk but i thought that line should have been done with more . heart, feeling, sadness. idk but it needed something , it felt very blah,.
but thats only little minor issues, it could have been how it was written idk.
personal my favorite voice for him was Dominic.

That's basically how I feel as well. I like Seth Green, but it's still jarring to hear his voice come out of Leo's mouth since I was so used to the other two guys voicing him. Dom's voice was so close to Jason's that I could barely tell them apart.

I think he's doings a wonderful job, although while I always felt like Seth would be fine as Leo, I do agree with a lot of others that it was a bit of a drastic change in the beginning. But I feel like Seth did that deliberately to play on the injured throat thing.

I feel that with each episode it seems like Seth settles into the role a bit more, and I feel he's really settled into it now, which is good. I think at first it seemed like he wasn't sure what tone to go for and since Leo was hurt, he had to sound hurt and weak for a little while. But now, I feel like he's finally settled on the tone and seems more confident when voicing him, which is good. He rocks, and I'm so glad he was chosen for the role.

I'm probably one of the few people who accepted Seth as Leonardo right off the bat. He's been doing a bang up job this entire time! To me Jason Biggs was a younger, more emotional Leo, but with Mr. Green he's a lot more mature and sure of himself.

You know, when I watched "Within the Woods" on Tuesday, I noticed that his voice didn't jar me as much as it did the first time. I think the reason is because not only have I gotten used to it, but I think at first it was a surprise because I wasn't sure what voice he would use for Leo, so it was a shock to hear such a deep voice. I'm used to it now though and feel Seth has come into his own. Yes, Jason's was good, but Seth's voice fits for where Leo is now and how much he's grown and matured.

Klunk1234
03-15-2015, 10:25 PM
Now, that I watched "Battle for New York" I found Leo's voice to be better. I heard his voice in some scenes with little high pitch which is fine, when he said: "Like in Space Heroes" part. Seth is putting an effort to be Leo. His wife must be thrilled; she is a Leo fan.

You know, I had a Cam Clarke vibe with Jason because of some of the times where he'd get high pitched and reminded me of Cam. But Seth is doing a great job, and I agree that he definitely broaden it out more now. That scream he did in "The Pig and the Rhino" was priceless.

I miss Jason's voice a little, since I think it went better with the voices of the other three brothers than Seth's does (which is not his fault). I've gotten used to Seth's voice, though, and he seems more comfortable in the role with every episode. The fact that he genuinely loves Ninja Turtles so much certainly doesn't hurt either.

4Kids and 2007movie leo r way better. Imo, leo needs to sound always in control n sound very balanced, and very elegant, like a prince, the king of the future, and i think both 4kids n 2004l7movie accomplished that part well. But nick leo just sound like a big brother thats all. I'm always behind on the current episodes because I don't have tv, so I generally have to wait until the DVDs come out. I feel I can still have an opinion though (since I'm an American and thus is my entitlement :tlol:)

I didn't like Seth as Leo at first. I DID however like how they incorporated Leo's voice change into the storyline with how his voice box was damaged. I give them props for acknowledging it instead of just pretending like it didn't happen.

I love Leo's original voice. It sounded youthful and had a lot of emotional range. I can accept the idea that his voice changed due to injury and also he's getting older so his voice would naturally lower, I just wish Seth wasn't so bland with it. It just sounds like bad voice acting, in my opinion.

I've yet to see the more current episodes though so I have to reserve my final opinion, especially when so many have said he's gotten better. As for where it sits with me right now, I don't like it.

That was cool, but it's kinda silly considering they ignored the recast in the middle of season two. Granted, Dom did sound closer to Biggs.

I just pretend Leo had a cold those episodes lol.

the problem with these cartoons shows is they need renowned actors to voice their characters since companies demand it. Its like a contract thing. They allow and fund the cartoon but they need to have renowned actors to voice their characters to pull in a wide-range of audience. Those investors are kind of out of touch, you see, so they think renowned actors matter for their ratings instead of good writing and voice acting, it is simply all about the name.

I don't know why they go with famous big name actors like Seth Green or Jason Biggs. These people are constantly involved with other projects and acting jobs too, so I don't know how they have the time.

C'mon, guys, half of what those actors are known for IS their voice. Seth does quite a few of the voices for Robot Chicken, and of course there's Rob, Sean, and several others (Corey, anyone? It's not the FIRST time he's provided a voice for a character). They choose actors with a distinctive voice so the character's voices will stand out and convey their personality. It's not as if they're just picking out random big-name "hot" actors who are most known for their looks. Like, I dunno, Chris Evans, maybe. If they did, we'd probably never even notice, because he's more known for his face than his voice. Actually, Hasn't everyone been gushing over some of the guest voices, already, anyway? Robert Englund, Gilbert Godfreid, to name just a couple. I'm still waiting for Cam to do a "Cam-eo", myself, LOL!

I haven't heard much of Jason Biggs voice work for Leo since I started developing an interest into the Nick TMNT so late into the show, so I can't really form much of an opinion about that guy and his former voice talent for Leonardo.

What I've heard from Seth Green and his voice for Leo has sounded rather well so far, and Green's voice seems fitting for the character.

So, I have no complaints.

Not to mention, Seth also does voice work for Family Guy and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H, too. All of them were chosen for how well they did the voice and the fact that they're massive TMNT fans doesn't hurt either. I think Seth is awesome and is doing a wonderful job. And it's awesome that while he does have a packed schedule, he still finds time to work on this show because he loves it and has a passion for it, which I like.

And I loved his evil laugh in "Tale of the Yokai." Now I want to see Leo become a bad guy.

I am also glad that he found time in busy schedule to do this since he loves the franchise. Tale of the Yokai and Attack of the Mega Shredder! had some of his finest moments as Leonardo.

I always find it a bit ironic how people have such an issue with Leo's voice.

I remember when the show first started how people were already lighting their torches and sharpening pitchforks when Biggs was cast as Leo. Parents were complaining how inappropriate he was for Leo since he's done so much adult stuff. (Apparently, they forgot just how blue Robin Williams was before "Ferngully" and "Aladdin.") Also, Biggs' Twitter account didn't help matters, either. I remember reading on IMDB people were literally creating petitions to get Biggs off the show and threatening to boycott the series.

So, the show airs and people continue to complain, comparing the actor to the character.

Then, it's announced that Biggs is leaving the show and being replaced by Green, who is not only a huge TMNT fan, but has had much more experience in voice acting than Biggs ever had, and what happens?

"NOOO!!! BRING BIGGS BACK!!! GREEN SUCKS!!! I DON'T WANT CHRIS GRIFFIN AS LEO!!!"

I wouldn't be surprised if these were the same people who complained about Biggs in the first place! Talk about your fair-weathered fans.

Personally, I love the change. I actually got excited when I found out that Green was joining. Sure, Dominac did a good job covering for Biggs, but animation is finally getting the recognition it deserves and I think the Networks want bigger names attached. I still hope Dom gets more work, though. Plus, I love how much more emotion and energy Green gives to the performance. And how they addressed his voice change was VERY clever. They knew the kids watching this weren't idiots and I remember how confused I used to get with voice changing in the show. Even the original cast from the 80s show was eventually replaced. Like I stated before, he's done VA for years, so he knows how to deliver. It's a LOT harder than people give it credit for. Biggs was good, but I think he prefers on screen acting over off. Plus, with his personality, I don't think Nick would've allowed him the freedom to...be himself. (And we've seen how that is...)

I've said it before and I will say it again, Biggs just really crossed the line way too many times. I originally did not want to watch this show with the drama his first causing back in fall 2012, but May 2013 was the final nail in the coffin for me when he made sexual jokes about the Pope and the Blessed Mother Mary. As a Catholic man I could never support a show while someone like that was working on it. When I heard that he was potentially departing the show back in May 2014 I started watching it, then when it was permanent I began watching it regularly. I've liked both Green and Dominic Catrambone as Leonardo and I feel I started watching the show at the right time,

There have been actors with raunchy humor who have done family-friendly stuff. Jackie Vernon, the voice of Frosty the Snowman, was known for being a dirty comedian. Another example would be Pauly Shore doing both of the Goofy movies; George Carlin was also known for his work on Shinning Time Station and Thomas the Tank Engine; and in this past decade we've had Sarah Silverman voicing the lead female in Wreck-It Ralph and Russell Brand doing Hop and the Despicable Me films. Biggs just could not keep his mouth shut during the years he worked on this show and then to mock the lives of people who tragically died was just plain wrong.

People take things comedians say on twitter way too seriously. And yes Biggs is a comedian, he's done way more comedies than drama. He had/has the perfect Leo voice, I hate Seth Green's voice, but this very last episode it was not as annoying as it has been. It's a cartoon, so I'm not going to get too riled up about it. I just prefer Biggs or even the guy doing a Biggs impression.

Children watching this show are never going to read or even KNOW who the actor is that is voicing these characters. It's just nonsense and part of this "GOTCHYA!" society on the internet who take pride in causing people their jobs for their jokes, or opinions.

There's a difference when he's joking about people dying in an airplane crash. Comedian or not, that sh*t's not funny at all no matter what you may think. I'm glad he's gone and that Seth's there because Seth's better anyway and he has more class unlike Biggs.

I believe that if Andrea Romano, the voice director, had any problem with the way Seth is voicing Leonardo, then she would not be doing this job right now. She might also have removed her name from the credits of this show like she did in Jetsons: The Movie when Universal had Janet Waldo's voice for Judy Jetson be replaced by former pop star Tiffany if she did not approve of Seth's portrayal of the character.

Exactly. He auditioned for the part, and he got it. I think he's doing a great job. However, I don't think Jason's removal had anything to do with his portrayal of the character. I think there was a lot more to it, especially as someone who visited the studio was informed that he was let go, which was the phrasing that was used. They didn't say that he left under his own terms.

Yes, I am aware of the information from the person who visited the studio. I was just talking about the job Seth is doing right now. I was saying that Andrea Romano must like the way Seth voices him. If she did not approve of the way Seth was voicing the character, then she would have done what she back in 1990 with Jetsons: The Movie. Sorry if there was any confusion.

Yeah, I'm with you, RS. Biggs's voice sounded like Leo hadn't reached puberty yet, and there were times when he'd gasp and it just sounded too forced. Seth is way better suited for the role and he's doing a great job. Can't wait to see how far he takes the character in season 4.

GildedLily

Of course, like I'm sure some of us, whenever we get a new voice for a character it takes a while getting used to. I was happy to hear that Seth got the role of Leo, and was even more happy/rooting for him when he mentioned how his wife always was a huge Leonardo fan.

Imagine what it's like at home? He probably drops all kinds of Leo lines with the wifey heh.

But I digress. At first, yeah, it took my ears a bit of time to get used to it, since I was so used to Biggs and Dominique. But Seth has really grown and gotten into the role a bit more, and I feel (or at least to me) that he has improved. Seems each episode, he's just getting better and better as Leo. And I'm quite happy he's Leo.

I mean, I'll admit; listening to Rob as Raph all through my childhood, and then hearing he'd be Donnie. At first, I was like, "I don't know..." but even then, that grew on me. I think they have the perfect foursome VA cast for the Turtles now. I wouldn't change a thing (but that's just me)

BubblyShell22
10-16-2015, 07:56 AM

For the time being, Biggs fitted the role of a younger and inexperienced Leo and despite his comments, I think he did pretty well. But Leo seems to have grown mentally since season three that I'm not sure how Biggs would fair. I guess you could say that it was perfect timing that Seth stepped in. Even though I wish he had voiced Leo from the start since the transition between the two was rather jarring at first. But Seth's voice is the Leo I prefer. I prefer Leo to be the strong and focused leader that he strives to be.

I don't know. There's lots of times he doesn't sound great, but that reflects more on the script honestly. Like when he's rambling about how he's obsessed with Karai in Turtles In Time, and when he's going off on Donnie for giving up in Fourfold Trap. Or his wholly apathetic "Sorry Raph, but at least we stopped the Kraang".
