View Full Version : Which was the worst of all? The Next Mutation, the 2014 movie, TMNT 3, or TMNT 2K7?

The Next Mutation, the 2014 Platinum Dunes movie, TMNT 3, and TMNT 2k7 are probably the versions of TMNT within the fandom that have been the most despised within the franchise, or at least the most divisive. Which version do you think is worst of all and why?

Edit: I noticed that MewMeow made a poll about the worst movie earlier (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=50675), but I wanted to incorporate more TMNT media (i.e. TV shows, such as The Next Mutation) with this poll and expand the comparison discussion.

Next Mutation, honestly I enjoy it because it's terrible, but it's easily the worst. For what the show was, and with the budget, there was never any hope it would be good. No classic or known villains or supporting cast, a horrible forced female character, added purely for diversity (though I am convinced it could've been handled better). I love the Turtle designs, it gave individual outfits without sacrificing familiarity, I liked the idea of the Dragons, though not their presentation, but ultimately it's probably the worst version.

I selected 2014 as the worst because out of all of the movies/series listed, this was the only one that bored me enough to make me want to fast-forward my way through it. (For what it's worth, I didn't - I hung in until the bitter end).

Next Mutation it is just the worst thing to happen to the TMNT franchise. The suits looked like crap the voice acting was crap Shredder was a bigger joke than he was in the 80's cartoon. That is what happens when Saban gets a hold of turtles. Next Mutation makes Turtles 3 & The 2014 movie look like excellent movise

Next Mutation and 2014 are terrible.

That's hard for me to decide on, the cons of each are different... they could all have their individual fan-given Razzie-like awards, given for separate reasons.

Areas of my personal "Failzies" awards:

Next Mutation - costume design, general dopiness, female added for romantic interest/needless history change to accommodate it
2014 - writing, human character focus, Turtle steroids, ill-fitting celebrity name grab
TMNT 3 - not using Jim Henson creators for costuming, making Turtles all look the same
2007 - character design (was never too impressed with it, found it kind of bland), parts of the story/writing/dialogue

I suppose 2014 "wins" for having the most points, though the rest are all very close behind. Interestingly, all of them have some character design element I wasn't big on.

On the up side for 2014 I guess, most of it's issues are what surround the Turtles and less about they themselves.

this was the only one that bored me enough to make me want to fast-forward my way through it.
I'd admit that I've put the disc in a small handful of times since I own it, but the last few times I've started doing exactly that, fast forwarding through the boring non-Turtles parts.

I guess that's another negative for 2014, it's the only Turtles anything I've taken to skipping portions.

And where's We Wish You a Turtle's Christmas and Turtle Tunes?
So bad that they are (ok, should be?) known only as "that which should not be named."

As much as I hate PD's movie. the nick series just has more out there. It just keeps churning out episodes. if there were both one stand alone thing then it'd be PD by a landslide. . THe only thing PD has going for them is that the there is almost literally no way that the sequel can be as bad or worse than the first.

The 2007 movie doesn't belong on this list, IMO. It's not perfect, but it does get a lot right, and parts of it are quite well-made. It's not the best, but it's far from the worst.

TMNT3 is... bad. But it did have potential as a concept. And even the movie we wound up with has some "so bad it's good" entertainment value, which is worth something to me, at least.

The Next Mutation's in a similar spot for me. I mean, it was definitely bad. I don't know that it could have been "good" exactly, but from the little I've seen, I can say that I laughed at it a bit and otherwise it's really easy to ignore.

So BayTurtles gets my vote. It's a terrible movie. I've covered this plenty of times before, so I won't get too far into it again, but damn near every aspect of the movie was so poorly-handled, from the piss-poor directing to one of the laziest, dumbest "scripts" I've ever seen filmed. Worst of all, it was just so generic, unengaging and boring on even a basic story level that I had a hard time getting through it. I didn't laugh with it and I couldn't laugh at it; I got no entertainment value from it at all. TMNT3 and TNM at least have the excuse of being "cheap"... BayTurtles was a hugely expensive turd, but one that had plenty of time, money and resources at its disposal. It has no valid excuses for its badness, and to me, that makes it far worse.

Definitely the 2014 movie.

How is it that Nickelodeon was smart enough to not green lit a sequel to "The Last Airbender" after it got panned by critics, but yet we end up getting a sequel to this piece of junk?

Upon looking at MewMeow's poll (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=1911), TMNT 2K7 had a significant amount of votes, so that's why I included it on this poll.

And where's We Wish You a Turtle's Christmas and Turtle Tunes?

Those versions didn't have their own storytelling to expand/create each of their own universes, characters, plots, etc.

TMNT III, although I still think it's a good film. I wish Turtles Forever was on this poll.

Since Turtles Forever served as more of a grand series finale to the 2K3/4Kids TV series rather than its own separate entity, I didn't include it.

Hmmm, so you would consider the Nick series far worse than the poll choices provided (including Next Mutation and the 2014 movie)? :-? Besides the quantity of episodes, what particular aspect(s) are just that detestable (i.e. characters, story writing, mutants, direction/tone) in the Nick series that you consider it the worst of the franchise?

I wish Turtles Forever was on this poll.

I know a lot People complain about the Fred Wolf Turtles being misrepresented but that's about the only complaint I ever hear about that movie. To me it's irrelevant because I don't think the Fred Wolf cartoon is a good show and I think the way they're potrayed kind of makes sense in the context of the story, even if it is a little bit inaccurate.

2014, not so much because it's bad (although it is), but because it's the worst thing a movie can be: mediocre. And forgettable. I keep forgetting I watched it because it was just such a blah nothing of a movie.

Next Mutation is at least memorable and weird.

I'm pretty sure it's not about the dumb jokes themselves, the context of the dumb jokes is what's important here.

The 4Kids Turtles had a much more serious universe and most of the jokes from their side is because of their frustration with the Fred Wolf Turtles who believe they can, for example, make advanced technology from a flashlight, which isn't actually that far from what could happen in that series when you think about it.

Also, people who complain that Turtles Forever seem to totally forget that the first five (hell even the first twenty) episodes of the FW cartoon isn't even close to a good chunk of the of the episodes. Seasons 3-7 (151 episodes, the bulk of the series) contain quite a lot really goofy episodes that clearly aren't meant to be taken seriously at all. So it's not really that off to depict them like they were in Turtle Forever.

And finally (personal opinion here), I don't care about the Fred Wolf cartoon, I think it's a poorly written and poorly animated mess.

We Wish you a Turtles Christmas and Turtle Tunes are the worst thing the turtles ever started in. I never watched the one sub-train live special with the action figure-like costumes but it looked bad. If we're going to go on this list, I'm going with NM. It is too cheesy and had very little interesting things going on for it. And Venus, less said.

02-27-2015, 11:59 PM
The worst TMNT thing to me was the new movie. In the older cartoons, they were cheesy because it fit with the era and it was just kinda that way, but the new movie was extremely rushed in my opinion. It was a typical Michael Bay explosion fest and the plot was extremely dull to me.

That and since Transformers is on it's like..5th movie? They are going to beat this into the ground for sure and each one will probably be worse then the last since doing movie after movie like that normally doesn't go very well. I would like it alot more if the designs didn't look like Shrek who bought a a get ripped in 90 days exercise tape though.

My vote went to the Next Mutation if only because of the backstory changes and lack of research that went into Venus' inclusion. It completely destroyed any enjoyment, ironic or otherwise, that could come from watching it, at least for me. I may be a little bitter because I actually watched that on television as a kid and even then I knew it was ********. The turtles I liked were the 1990 movie's turtles, and as a kid that's how I knew them [I was not fond of the 87 cartoon as a kid] so seeing them portrayed the way Next Mutation did it was insulting to me back then.

If I had to pick a runner up, though, it'd be the 2007 movie. Sure, TMNT III is bad, and 2014 is gross to look at, but neither of those made me downright ANGRY like Splinter's characterisation in the 2007 movie did. I actually rather liked 2014's take on Splinter for the most part.

The PD movie takes my vote. Bad character designs and the story was terrible. It seriously didn't seem to care to reference the source material other than superficially. I'm still angry they changed the Foot Clan to a thuggish terrorist group. The whole "ninja" thing was thrown out for all the characters in the movie actually.

NM despite the overuse of sound effects, sometimes off characterizations, and overall campiness, the (corny, punny) jokes and fighting scenes were good (I give respect to anyone who could pull off fighting in a bulky hot costume). I also liked the character designs. I still think it was an okay concept, but horrible execution.

The only reasons I don't like TMNT 3 are because of the costumes and that the story was boring to me.

TMNT 2007 doesn't really deserve to be in this poll. The whole magic thing never bothered me because its been done in other versions too. It's not unusual for the guys to fight magical alien beings. The only things I didn't like are Leo's characterization and the tolerable Turtle designs.

Other, as in Image Comics. It was nothing but gory violence that mutilated the turtles. Its such a far cry from the 1987 cartoon I grew up with and define the TMNT. Its nothing I want the TMNT depicted as so its best to ignore it. I also ignore Next Mutation as best I can. The tone was too goofy and had a lack of interesting characters but it was Venus that is the sole reason I ignore that version. The late 90s' was a depressing time for fandom with these two poor iterations. Others opinions may differ but neither is popular amongst fandom.

Aww, poor baby.

Imagine how we comic fans feel. Your precious cartoon is the real far cry from the source material. The Image comics did awesome things with the groundwork Mirage had set in place. Hardly "nothing but gory violence that mutilated the turtles". It gave us the most character development Michelagenlo will ever have, it showed Shadow growing up, it gave Casey time to cool his jets & be a better lover/father, the turtles learned how to travel the astral plane, they had their family ties tested, they dealt with mortality, morality, it's got awesome themes. It was action packed, dark/gritty, yet not without heart or humor (albeit adult, at times). The TMNT at their best, IMO.

It's hilarious you think The Next Mutation goofy, but find sh*t like this completely acceptable-

Besides, if you count AndrewNDB's conclusion issues (and I think we're all on the same page that we should), all "the toys" were put back in the box in the end anyway. The whole run did some interesting things and didn't negatively impact anything else, so I can't see how it qualifies as "the worst" anything.

This is coming from a guy with Bay Turtles and Nick Turtles in his signature.

Likewise the Mirage Turtles were never all serious after the early issues, their personalities weren't as well defined right away. The Mirage Turtles have plenty of silly and playful moments and they joke around quite a bit.

I don't think it's harsh by any means. If people want to blindly disregard key factions of the property because it doesn't line up with their childhood idealization, including fallacies & hypocrisy, it's subject to response that addresses those points.

Maybe you need to get past the fact that on forums, people have these kind of discussions.

2K7 because it's not really a TMNT Movie, but a monster movie with TMNT half assedly inserted in there. It was a boring clusterf**k that set up a movie that never came out.
Platinum Dunes was a bad Turtles movie, but they did get the TMNT right in a lot of ways, and at the very least its entertaining and fun. Evil Foot clan has a grasp on New York TMNT come out and kick butt bam. Simple and effective albeit with ridiculous character designs and the TMNT taking a back seat to April.
Next Mutation is bad but its tongue and cheek bad. I'd rather watch it as opposed to TMNT 2k7, because at least its villains are more entertaining and funny.
TMNT3 as bad as it was, still has a decent story and ok costumes (texture and lighting hurt the TMNT costumes more than anything), with the villains being the real nail in the coffin. Still better than the other 3 I mentioned.

WOW! That is a tough call.
I voted Next Mutation but, really, it is between Next Mutation and TMNT 3.

TMNT 3 was released at a time when I LOVED everything from the Ninja Turtles. And I turned it off, as a kid, and ejected the VHS and gave it back to mom to return to the rental store. I can't even say it's a guilty pleasure, so-bad-its-good kinda movie (Like Super Mario Bros!). It was bad enough that child me, lover of all things TMNT, couldn't sit through it. I will give it a point for earlier exposure to ZZ Top though.

Next Mutation is just horrid, ugly, and aging worse than it did. If TMNT3 was an abomination to me as a kid, this killed it. I tried to give it another shot, since joining up here and seeing there is mild support for it. Netflix has it so, I'm not loosing anything more than time, right? Wrong. I lost brain cells too. I can't even regress into the inner-child me. It's mind numbingly bad. And I do watch stuff that I can put aside my age, etc, and just watch it for what it is and enjoy it, but Next Mutation I just cannot.

I actually like the 2007 CG movie, so that wasn't even an option for me :)
Yeah, I'm one of THOSE guys. A weak movie, perhaps. It's not on par with the original or most of the animated series... but it's got a decent story and I like the look of it. A better threat/villain would have been better.
That Raph/Leo fight though...

The 2014 movie is bad. I try to give it more credit by saying it was a visually decent movie, with good CG and believable integration with the live action...
But trying to watch it on my own, at home? I haven't been able to do it. I saw it once all the way though in the theater... I can appreciate the bonus features on the disc... but I just haven't been able to sit through it again.
Horrible story, an origin re-telling I'm not crazy for (and I'm all for altercations since there is no real consistent origin), stupid designs, bad actress, a fart joke?!, and the quality of movie that it is... it's SO paper thin that I just can't sit through it. That's all. I can sit through the other 3 movies all day long. Literally. There are lesser quality movies I can watch more than TMNT2014... Rubber? Yea, I can sit through that piece of crap again before TMNT2014.
But I will give it credit with a proper representation of the Turtles personalities. They, themselves, are fun to watch. I'm not so much into the other characters, Sacks is pointless, O'Neil is horrible, I will admit Vernon isn't bad in this, and the Shredder has no purpose here. But the Turtles, they got it right with them.

So, weighing all that... I decided on Next Mutation. But, like I said, it was close.

...dear god. I'd never seen this before, but it's like the '87 cartoon and the '66 Batman show had a really terrible, low-budget baby.

Gotta give it to Clarke, Paulsen, Townsend and Gordon - they gave it their all, even for this. They've always been pros.

And were those the same (or similar) suits they used for Disney/Universal Studios appearances? I've still got a photo of kid-me and Mikey that I was incredibly thrilled about back then. (And uh, still am, let's be honest.)

Nah, the Blue Line costumes are their own thing. They were used to promote the toyline (among other things, which is why they look like the first series of figures) at one point. Events & whatnot. Lavigne donned one, as a matter of fact. I have a picture of that somewhere, but I can't find it. There's this, though-

I've actually got that on VHS. It's fun to watch occasionally for a few laughs since it's so short.

Aha! Thanks for the clarification - the ones below are definitely them. I dig the action figure-style heads on the Blue Line ones, and the plastron and overall design is pretty similar, but the below ones are probably more detailed/"quality" overall, I guess? (And if that Lavigne pic ever turns up, that'd be cool to see.)

Just realized I'd actually posted a picture of meeting "Mikey" as a kid back in this thread (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1317982&postcount=58), but I guess I forgot the details.

The Next Mutation is by far the worst one. I dunno what they were thinking. It was simply weird and it did not work out. I'm amazed that it got the green light.

(worst to best)

1) TMNT (2014), also known as "Bay Turtles", was horrible, in my opinion. Good popcorn flick, but just way too butchered. I also personally HATED the designs of the turtles!

2) I always thought The Next Mutation was a Power Rangers-esque version of TMNT. Doesn't help both shows were made by Saban. Outfits were weird, not many known characters were in this show (besides TMNT, Splinter, and Shredder), and the voice acting was horrid. Also the characterizations were off. Interesting note: Seems Bay Turtles ripped off NTM's designs, sorta. That's a good idea right? Rip off one of the WORST versions of TMNT for your new TMNT movie. Ironically, it sets the tone.

3) TMNT (2007) was a mess of a movie; too unfocused. I agree with others that it was a big monster movie, and that's it pretty much. The sidestory with Raph being a 'superhero' or whatever was lame. Tho I did like the Leo/Raph fight on the rooftop. Overall, I couldn't get into it and it's not very rewatchable IMO.

4) TMNT 3 was bad and cheesy at parts, but had a decent story, with them going back to feudal Japan. Even the Fred Wolf cartoon did a decent episode like that a year later, probably because they also liked the idea ("The Legend of Koji").
