Wanted to post this and just put it out there.

PD's 2014 TMNT movie is great.

Like most of you when I first watched this at the cinema I hated the new origin, the plot holes and all the normal stuff but I watched it again today sveral months later and I like it.

Turtles characters are good, its funny (not as often as it tries to be but its funny) . The action is ridiculous but exciting and all in its a great start for a new universe.

I hope for more movies building on what they've started and making it better.

Dump megan fox tho!

I agree. There are parts of the the movie that are good. Not a fan of the turtles learning how to fight from a book that Splinter found though. That part was kinda cheesy.

I thought it was awful. xD After seeing it, I moped around the rest of the day. The acting was not very awesome. The beginning was Fruit Ninja. There were a few times when the movie promoted Dominoes pizza and orange Crush soda. And there was that time when Megan Fox was like "Oops. Sorry, boss, I have no proof of mutant turtles." But then she goes to her partner and showed him the picture of them that she took. I'm like WHY DIDN'T YOU SHOW THAT TO YOUR BOSS, APRIL! And yeah. Dump Megan Fox. Miscast to the max.

I will admit, though, that the fight scene between Splinter and Shredder was pretty rad. :) I liked that part. B)

It´s a great movie! I have seen it twice in German and after that, one time in english. It made me want more :D

Good points:
- Megan didn´t took all the screen time for her
- the turtles personalities are well thought
- Splinters design is great
- I cried when I saw the expression on their faces when Splinter got beaten! So damn good.
- the character cast was really well done :)

Could-have-been-better points:
- How they learned ninjutsu is fishy
- Shredders armor looked like Megatron from Transformers
- I wanted to see Raph in the trenchcoat

Wow. Even the movie's relentless defenders, y'know the whole "it's not that bad" crowd don't even argue this. Are you sure you're watching the same movie?

I don't know how you came away thinking Megan Fox didn't get most of the screentime.

If you are one of those people who count the exact number of minutes Megan got, you can´t enjoy the movie at all.

I don't think anyone has to count the amount of minutes Megan Fox gets in relation to the turtles to see she gets the most screentime by a wide margin.

Also the movie is all about April. Trying to prove herself a serious reporter, saving the turtles and Splinter as a child, learning the secret of Project Renaissance and the death of her father even scoring the killing blow against the movie's villain.

What was the turtles story? They get kidnapped, fight and slide down a mountain. Any moment including their origin and various battles have April shoehorned in as the most important aspect.

You think of Aprils butt at the mountain chase, right?

Raph saving his brothers with April, April reporting from her fathers lab about he turtles, mikeys crush on April, Splinter talks with her, those are all scenes with the turtles and not only her.

I get your point, she got a lot of screentime that could have been used to maybe show Leo and Raph fighting or Donnie hacking April or just them eating Pizza.

I agree. There are parts of the the movie that are good. Not a fan of the turtles learning how to fight from a book that Splinter found though. That part was kinda cheesy.

I think that can be fixed. Make them discover that the books they read only awakened their skills that they already had and go with the reincarnation story line like in the IDW comics.
What did you guys like about this movie, anyway? I just want to know.
Michelangelo's boner joke. :D Seriously though I liked the turtles personality and all and I enjoyed Will Arnett as Vernon but not much beyond that. I know I hated how big they made the turtles and lack of in depth story telling but I like the idea of having the turtles on the big screen again and so I view the movie with an open mind and an optimistic attitude in hopes that the sequel will patch up the story.

You think of Aprils butt at the mountain chase, right?

I was thinking April being shoehorned into the origin and intervening in the raid in the lair saving Splinter's life and later intervening in the turtles battle with Shredder even delivering the final blow but now that you mention it Vernon being distracted by April's butt during the snowchase is another good example.

Raph saving his brothers with April, April reporting from her fathers lab about he turtles, mikeys crush on April, Splinter talks with her, those are all scenes with the turtles and not only her.

See? Almost every scene features her or is about her. Regardless she's always the focus.

This is where people who claim this wasn't a TMNT movie have a point. If we are to take the director at his own word then it seems he only did a bit of research after the story was already locked down and only for the purpose of small things they could easily insert.

Don't get me wrong it's neat that Raph uses a chain like he did in the '07 movie or that Shredder delivers his "tonight I dine on turtle soup" line fron the animated series/video game and the like but what little of the mythology (generally unimportant stuff) that was present was an afterthought inserted into a story about April O'Neil. It's not that the the Yoshi/Saki connection was "too complex" as Liebesman claimed it was just too complex to insert in the story they'd crafted about April.

If they'd made it about the turtles from the start they wouldn't have had this problem.

It really depends. I love Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films (not counting the 3rd one). They were well-done and received pretty good reviews, and Spidey's huge! I think it's how the director goes about it...

IndigoErth
03-10-2015, 02:18 PM
I dunno, it really depends on what's done with it imo. At this point I'm thinking that if film makers want to make films about beloved childhood something or others, they need to stick with the beloved things of their own generation, esp if they themselves were a fan.

Not that those outside it can't be hired to help make a film, but really... if it's Turtles, then let people from my generation and younger call the shots. Film makers who love TMNT as much as we do. Not people such as 50-year-old Michael Bay who's never really going to get it. (Yeah yeah, "he was only a producer!" I know... and as a big producer with his company involved he still got a lot of say in it, if not most. Money buys that option, and producers contribute money.)

IMO I'm not sure how the writers can really claim to be fans either considering that blue door script that probably close to zero fans would want it ending the way it did and bombed for a reason when it leaked.

Hadn't looked at this thread for a while.

The 2014 film is quite a divisive issue.

Sorry to all that pointed out this should be in the main movie thread. Still new to the forums ("It's my first day."-Homer Simpson)

I suppose what really prompted me to make this post is my change of heart.

I hated this movie when I first saw it. First viewing for a beloved franchise turned movie is the hardest, thats when all the changes etc jar you the most. What I wasn't expecting that I would ever change my mind. (I only watched it again because someone bought me the DVD so I felt compelled to do so.).

So has anyone else grown to love this yet?

Remember when the next TMNT reboot happens you'll wish it was as good as the last movie.

Cool, always more interesting to hear perspectives when the love or hate opinions offer more info as to why. :)

As for me... Well, don't think I can say I've grown to love the film itself as a whole and probably won't, there are still those things that remain rather stupid, thoughtless, treated with too much disregard, or unnecessarily disappointing. And at this point if I watch it I find myself fast forwarding through the non-Turtles parts of the film. Only Turtles movie I've ever gotten into the habit of skipping portions of it... The parts without the Turtles are, imo, unfortunately rather boring after a few viewings.

There are bits and pieces of the movie I've come to love. I've warmed up to these Turtles more than I'd have ever thought possible ten months ago. Not 100%, maybe more like 70%-ish, but that's up from originally being at, like, zero. Too much of a sucker for Leo, there was probably no way he wasn't going to somehow win me over to some degree... :tlol: (Though I'd still rather remove Knoxville from his vocal cords.)

you get used to it after a while.
Well, I'm not sure I'll believe that until the defensive arguments and remarks stop. lol But I'm sure 2016 will keep it fresh.

I think it is too bad that an appreciation thread will bring all of the people who don't like the movie to come in and start posting why they don't like it. Save that for a "the 2014 movie sucks thread".

That being said, I did not like the movie. I did not come here to trash the movie, however. I came here to read why people like the movie and while I do not like the movie there are some good things about it. Not many but a few. The Turtle's characters were fine except for creepy horny Mikey. Seriously, wft was that? At least they didn't make his character stupid which is something I hate when it comes to new versions of TMNT. I especially like Donnie taking it upon himself to "be the badass for once" That was a favorite character moment to me. Minae Noji was good in the movie but I wish her character would have been more than just the foot soldier wrangler. Hopefully her role will be more expanded and more involved in the sequel. I also really liked the score and the fact that the Turtles got a very recognizable and catchy superhero-ish theme. The elevator scene and the scene where they are all shushing each other are still funny and well done too.

That's all I have really. Really bad movie but those were the things that I liked about it.

Jasey Cones
03-14-2015, 04:21 AM
'Creepy horny mikey'- that made me smile. Actually describes alot of teenagers I have known.

On to another thing...

There's a few comments around the fact that I was either brave or naive to post such a thread as well as some negative comments. I find this a sad situation on a forum for us with a common interest to share our opinions and joys (not to mention the internet in general).

I'm 40, married with kids and a professional job. Nothing (and I repeat Nothing) anyone could post on here would have the power to negatively affect my life, self esteem or confidence.

In fact I am quite entertained by the anti PD or PD lover comments and on other threads I have had my opinions changed (slightly) by the opposing views of others.

People should not feel they can not express their likes (or dislikes) of anything because of the opinions of others.

Have some conviction and resilience in your own views and exhibit some tolerance of others and their views.

None are prefect of course, but I find some difference between simple imperfection and "wtf were you thinking?"

Imperfect - small stuff that movies just ignore the "hows" for; such as how some things in their lives were accomplished (van, surveillance system, etc) when they supposedly weren't even allowed out of the house. Or getting back to NYC from the mountain via sewer system. Raises an eyebrow, but otherwise harmless, possibly amusing, casual discussion/debate/movie dissection fodder.
I don't mind most of these sorts of things much, they can be fun to discuss if people don't get too defensive/butthurt over a conversation or too mad that small stuff like that happened. I'd love a long, friendly discussion over those details... I mean Poptarts? How do they even GET Poptarts and other stuff?? lol Was Splinter really dragging home mass quantities of Crush soda he... uh, got somewhere? :tlol: I mean the thought of that is kind of hilarious to think about if you don't take the absence of info personally.
"Wtf were you thinking?" - stupid choices for important parts, like the book as source of their skills, the absent source for the Japanese influence; breaking the link between Splinter and Shredder, etc...

That doesn't sound like shoehorning in an origin story at all, they should totally go with that awesome idea of yours.

This movie is mediocre and severely lacking at best. I like it for what it is. And what it is, in my estimation at least is an action movie that has a lot of plot holes and things shuffled around in post production.
As for movies that I think are great, man too many to name.
Taxi Driver, Godfather, Rocky, Million Dollar Baby, American Hustle, Die Hard, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, No country for Old Men, the Fighter, Full Metal Jacket.

Basically this... (snake phobic warning)
But like one of those snakes that went for too much and broke open.

Seriously, further proof that he eats people! Or at least redheads. (Nick April needs to watch her back.)

Far as I'm concerned, any movie with Megan Fox is automatically worth watching, regardless of how badly it may otherwise suck. She did an excellent succubus-type demon in Jennifer's Body, one of the best horror flicks of the past 20 years or so. In Adult Mutant Bodybuilder Crocs, I'm even able to overlook the normally offensive presence of Whoopi Goldberg. Those two in a scene together - now that's what I call contrast! The story's about as believable as your average James Bond, The Bourne Redundancy, Indiana Jones and the Badly Misunderstood History Lesson or any other action flick/spy thriller/explosion & car chase extravaganza. With aliens. And Zombies. Not to mention Katniss Everdeen.
No, seriously, don't mention her......

If many feel this way... I am totally going to contact her and we'll film two hours of her just sitting in front of the camera not doing much. It will inevitably make many millions. I'll pay her only a million of the earnings, but it's for a very fast one day gig, less even, just two hours of work where she made a million just to sit on her ass.

I'll agree that Fox was good in Jennifer's Body; I put that largely down to a decent script and a competent director pushing her limited talents in the right direction.

Otherwise, consider me a Fox-free zone - for the life of me, I can't understand the appeal.

Somewhere within the epicentre of all the best bits of TMNT incarnations exists my "perfect" TMNT film. That includes elements of the PD as well.

I loved the PD film for what it was and I love settling in on a Sunday afternoon to watch the DVD. Is it my favourite TMNT incarnation? Hell no. Am I one of its biggest critics? Absolutely. But there are parts of it which are priceless, which make me smile and for that it is a welcome edition to the TMNT world.

One day, someone will make my perfect TMNT movie and then the rest may fade into insignificance, but until that time I will have to watch the lot and find something in each to savour. Except Fast Forward. That horror show is unredeemable. *shudder*

I agree, Megan Fox is amazing to behold on screen.

A truly exquisite and fascinating actress. :tlove:

I agree, Megan Fox isn't at all amazing on screen.

A truly bland and wooden actress.

I agree with this.

Yes, her blank stares are incredible. Her level of self control that is required to maintain the same expression through so many different situations! Such talent!

It takes a real actress to master the ability to continue pouting while screaming or attempting to look vaguely fearful.

One day, someone will make my perfect TMNT movie and then the rest may fade into insignificance
And at that point many of us will probably be in our 80s and all get together for a special old people screening. :tlol: Then see how many happily kick the bucket the next day.

I do hope it's much sooner than that though. lol :trazz:

No one ever said Megan Fox will be recruited by the Royal Shakespeare Company any time soon, but you could say the same thing for most actors/actresses, and I'd much rather watch Megs sit on her behind for 2 hours straight than Glenn Close win 35 Oscars in a row, dig?
I'm actually a little surprised how little they took advantage of having a mega-hottie as a female lead, guess they must have wanted that PG rating REAL bad.
You've got a rich guy, a super-villain, a co-worker, countless Ninjas and the only one who comes anywhere close to trying to hit on her is my boy Mikey? Really?

The co-worker was hitting on her all the way through the movie.

Sachs, Shredder and the Foot Clan were probably more focused on Their Evil Plan than tripping over their dicks to get to Fox. I mean, not that I'd know personally, but I have been in the same room as hot people before and I don't recall all action coming to a halt as everybody stopped what they were doing to drool.

As for me, I'd rather sit through Pacino serving up a decent performance than watching the current shirtless legion of himbos flexing their way across the screen. I'd rather watch Angela Bassett than Kate Beckinsale. Eye candy is great, but it shouldn't be all there is - I mean, they do call it "acting" for a reason. At one stage in cinematic history, you were expected to hand in a passable performance rather than just standing around and looking pretty... that was how you could tell the difference between actors and models.

Sadly, the two seem fairly interchangeable these days.
