View Full Version : Reimagine Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as drastically as you can.

Some franchises can have installments so radically different from each other you'd never suspect they were connected at all. I find such franchises to be fascinating, there's always something fresh to experience.

Now it got me thinking, what if TMNT was like that? Yeah sure, the Fred Wolf cartoon had little to do with the comics but Splinter, Shredder, Baxter, April, Casey, the Rat King and Leatherhead were there (albeit somewhat altered), the setting was the same, the basic idea was intact for the first season at least.

I'm talking about making it really different, you don't have to use the same characters (not even the Turtles), the same setting, the same concepts or even the same basic idea as previously established. All you have to keep is the title "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and it has to make sense somehow, that's it.

Also, the Nick show isn't what I would call "drastically" different from other TMNT content.

Yeah that too, obviously both of them have rather notable differences from the other material, but it's pretty clear niether of them are trying to be particularly different from TMNT as a whole.

To contribute and not just nitpick, I will give my own reimagining:

The brothers start off as humans. The marital arts run deep in the veins of their family. They are highly trained and lethal.

When exposed to the mutagen via a chemical plant leak, they mutate. (The plant was dumping failed chemical experiments into nearby waterways and our heroes came in contact with it while fishing and catching turtles to keep as pets.)

At first the boys are mortified with their present states, shun the world and go into hiding in the near by woods. There they clamor around in their cumbersome clunky bodies, barely able to function. Ala:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Metamorphosis

Eventually they decide that they will not just waste away in the woods, but rather they resume their training while becoming ever so acclimated to their new bodies.

Through this the boys find strength in what they once considered weakness (strong shells for protection, claws and strong beaks for weapons, etc.)

After many months of training in the woods. The boys emerge ready for a life of crime fighting.

I wouldn't say this is terribly drastic, but it's art & a concept I came up with last year that is quite unique compared to what we've had (most similar to Souls Winter, probably). http://powderakacaseyjones.deviantart.com/art/Ninjatatoruzu-462952538

HA!

As a fic exercise my friends and I tried to integrate diverse canons into the Harry Potter universe.

Raph, Mike, Leo, and Don were four muggleborn wizards cast out of their families as small children because their magic made them uncontrollable to muggle familes. Wards of the state, they finally found their way to a magical half-way house where a newly immigrated Tang Shen befriended them...and eventually convinced her husband, Hamato Yoshi to adopt them.

Unbeknownst to the kids, Shen and Yoshi were on the run from The Foot, a Death Eater clan from Japan after the murder of the leader's oldest son: Oroku Nagi.

The plot then followed the main story arc of the Mirage books, with Splinter and Shen being unregistered animagi, and the boys getting stuck midway through human and turtle by trying to learn the skill themselves.

But this all happens long after Shen dies, Leo tries to avenge her death on his own at Christmas, Splinter goes into hiding, with the guys ending up at a magical boarding school in England...because of reasons.

It was a lot of fun to write, because of its utter ridiculousness.

Four teenage girls finds enchanted gems that stores the souls of four Kappa warriors. Unlocking the gems secrets with the help of their Martial Arts Sensei Hamato Yoshi, the girls transforms into four humanoid turtles. When handling a group of thugs they are mistaken as guys, hence giving themselves the names of their favorite renesance artist.

Four martial artists who are down on their luck decide to dress up in turtle costumes and clean up NYC ninja style. Shredder's a businessman by day and runs a criminal organization behind the scenes. His little brother is a cop in NYC and attempts to bring his sibling to justice. Alan Vonkrang is some serial killer who collects the brains of his victims. yada yada yada This is TMNT in the real world! No mutagen or mutations. It's a totally new dark and gritty spin which isn't really new at all, but everyone else is doing it with reboots so why not? haha Couldn't resist going down this road. Ninja Turtles Rebirth or something. That's about alls I got with allergies dogging me down at the moment. Fox would probably eat it up.

Drastically eh...

Five years into World War III, drones and mechanised combat units have dominated the battlefield. What they lack in creative strategy they make up for with numbers and uncaring efficiency. Mankind's last hope may well be an experimental program developed in a secrete installation behind the Asian front.

A new generation of advance battle tanks have been created with anti-mech capabilities specifically in mind. They are faster, more agile, and better protected than any previous generation of armoured vehicle, and learning from humanities mistakes, they are not autonomous.

Our future depends on the edge these tanks will have over fully automated combat units. An edge provided by the instincts of specially bread, and rigorously trained operators, who will command the vehicles through direct neurological control.

Humanity is rapidly loosing the war, and in a last ditch effort to turn the tide, the tanks, code name Turtles, are deployed before the genetically engineered teenage operators have reached full maturity. They will have to rely on their superior instincts, and reflexes gained from their incomplete ninja training.

Most drastic reimagining I can think of? Easy- This:

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10795684/1/Some-Other-World

Ever wonder what would happen if Splinter hadn't raised the boys as noble warriors? What if Shredder wasn't the evil villain we've grown to know, but a lone crusader against his cruel and vicious former mentor? The man once named Hamato Yoshi has raised four mutants as his own assassins, and only one man can defend the city against them- Oroku Saki.

I've twisted the TMNT lore around, into a bit of a "reverse world" kind of universe where the good guys aren't who one would expect. The boys in THIS world are not very nice. I'm enjoying working with a much darker version of them, especially Leo and Mikey- two completely opposite personalities, but both very damaged. Splinter's one very BAD father in this one..... It's a bit different for me, doing something so dark and yes, tragic in a twisted sort of way.

To be fair, April's acceptance isn't entirely her own idea, and I will be getting into some of the reasons behind it in more depth soon. The boys aren't the only ones in her life who are bad people, either. For anyone familiar with the original /mirage comics, Casey wasn't especially nice or a good influence all the time (he was something of a drunk womanizing bum) so it isn't much of a stretch to make him even worse.

I really took a look at all the characters and tried to figure out ways to switch their roles without changing their personalities TOO much- like for instance, Mikey is still "playful", but his idea of fun is rather twisted. Donnie is still the "geeky one", but in a very creepy stalker-ish way. Krang will still be his usual caustic self, and Baxter will still be the cowardly sycophant to Shredder, and still a bit mentally unbalanced as well- he'll just be working for a good cause this time around. As for Splinter, I have to say he's turning into a real monster in this, which is probably very counter to what most people who are familiar with him will remember. That was sort of the point, though, since this IS an "evil" version of them all.

Hamato Yoshi is a trainer who captures 4 Ninja Turtles in his "Capsule balls" and uses them to do battle against the evil Shredder and his Foot Ninja.

All the various other animal mutants in the series can be captured as well to complete the "Turtle Dex" and send them out in battle. Shredder captures a Bebop and Rocksteady to do battle.

Thanks, guys. Really glad (and surprised) to see folks like that one so much. I'm really kind of proud of it, as it was a plot bunny that hit me from a conversation with my other half, that also resulted in a separate story where the turtles are discovered by the NYPD- AFTER they are killed in their own home. It's sort of a tragic take on the aftermath of their final fight, and how it changes people.

As for the "evil turtles" tale, yes, it's still going, and will be updated regularly, if not always frequently. (I DO have several other projects going, too, so....)

I had posted my somewhat reimagining in another topic about a nice Krang crashing on earth who raises the turtles but it wasn't that drastic imo. Let's see...

2 best friends (Leo and Mike) studying martial arts on their way home from class spot a homeless man being kidnapped and forced into a car. They stop to help him but the captors overpower them and take them along with the homeless man. They awake in a hidden facility where illegal testing is done on humans and animals. After breaking free they manage to escape and hideout in the sewer. Then they slowly start physically changing into turtles.

No Donnie or Raph. The op clearly states as long as it's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Plural. I picked Leo and Mike because they have the most common names. The facility could be run by Baxter Stockman. No Shredder, Krang or Splinter though. No mutagen or other worldly elements. It's just them vs evil scientist...and vigilante stuff around the city I guess.

Leonardo leads the foot clan
Raphael leads the mutants
Donatello leads the Utroms/Krangs
Michelangelo leads the Superheroes/Bishop's group

the winner of the battle royale will be given a gift by God (Turtle Saint) to mold the world into their own image.

Okay Miwa (still Yoshi's daughter and stolen by Saki) and Karai are seperate characters. Miwa is treated by Saki as his precious princess, she has the Foot elite acting as her personal body guard (which in this version they do stand toe-to-toe with the turtles).

She knows the truth about her being Yoshi's daughter, but as she told Splinter "Why would i live in a sewer with a rat when I can live in a life of luxury." in her mind, Shredder taking her was the best thing to happen to her.

then stuff happens

Shredder is taken out of power for good (because of the final Battle between the Gods [Turtle Saint vs The Black Dragon]) and the foot clan abandons Miwa. Miwa ends up going Azula level of crazy and gets herself mutated into Mutagen Man.

Mutagen Miwa Man fights against the turtles in the sewers and the turtles ends up flushing her (without knowing it is Miwa) out of the sewers and into the waters outside, where she dissipates into the ocean

Some neat and interesting ideas!

Was working on something last night, kinda longish, more of just a 'how they got there,' but tied the end of the write up into sorta close to the lives the existing TMNT find themselves in so by that point probably not drastically changed enough to actually post so just saved it.

Not sure how many people read my idea in the previous page, if at all, but ever since then I've been thinking about this. It really intrigued me and made me think about other franchises too.

My idea wasn't very drastic after I thought about it but if we do have to keep the 'mutant' aspect it makes it harder to deviate from its original concept.

Other things I came up with (not exactly solid ideas):

Make it an anthropomorphic world, like Sonic or something. Have the turtle characters be ninjas. No mutagen or krang.

What if the turtles were scary creatures, almost like in horror movies. They weren't good but not evil either. Making them ninjas makes it corny though. How did these things get into martial arts, lol.

Ok I gave it more thought and this is what I came up with. It's as different as I can think without losing the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" base.

It's set in the future where cloning has been perfected but it's only for medical purposes.

The local mob has been causing chaos all over the city for years with their gang of ninja assassins. After years of struggle, law enforcement is finally able to take them down. They get the death sentence and their boss gets life in prison.

An accomplice on the outside tells his boss of a plan he has that could bring back their gang through cloning. They only need a sample of their DNA (hair or blood left on clothes etc.) It would take time and would need to set up an underground cloning operation.

After a few years of work the clones are in their final stage of growth. However there's an accident that causes turtle DNA to get sucked into their tubing. The doctor hired to do the illegal cloning has a small pet turtle that he accidentally drops into their tank (or he could mix up samples from experimenting on turtles...whatever you prefer).

When they finally come to life they are humanoid turtles. The assassins are back but bigger and stronger than before. Now they plan to break their boss out of prison and take over the city again. Plus they now have the possibility of creating an army of other mutants.

I have a script I'm working on. It sort of follows the base of what we know about TMNT universe

Turtles created by accident
Splinter is a rat that had been Hamato Yoshi's pet
Splinter raises turtles as his children and trains them in Ninjitsu
Turtles told the world outside would not accept them.
April starts out as a college intern working for Stockman.

Differences:

Oroku Nagi has a minor part in the story's beginning.
Oroku Saki is not a 7 year old kid when his brother dies.
Oroku Nagi murders Tang Shen (implied that both Nagi and Saki had their way with her before killing her)
Hamato Yoshi is stabbed from behind trying to avenge his wife, Yoshi kills Nagi as his last act on earth. Splinter leaves scratches on Oroku Saki's face.

Events in which Splinter finds the Turtles take place in Japan.
When the turtles are around five years old Splinter follows Oroku Saki to America.

Raph and Mikey are not above using their ninja skills to steal pizza. Mikey refers to it as the "Three-fingered Ninja discount"

Leonardo is the only turtle that visits Donnie's lab.
Donnie feels they are meant to be more then just ninja.

Millions of years ago, the ancient turtles known as Archelon found themselves in what is now the Galapagos Islands. They laid their eggs. Those that could not move on into the deep were raised by the native tortoises. These turtles bred into the tortoises' gene pool over time. Archelon returned a few times to lay more eggs until their extinction. But their genes lived on in the tortoises. These tortoises lived in lonesome harmony for ages.

One fateful day, a mysterious glowing lettuce formed. Some of the tortoises ate it. Devouring it gave them odd reactions and transfigurations. They soon began to walk on two legs, and develop a humanistic shape. Eventually, some developed a soul. Once there were 100 human-like turtles, they divided into 5 tribes of 20. These five tribes are:

* Leonus- Blue, focused on governmental processes, such as democracy and colonization.
* Dondu- Purple, focused on science.
* Rapha- Red, warlike.
* Mikus- Orange, agricultural.
* Venna- Pink, religious and magical.

These tribes each occupied a sector of the island.

Does having an AU where Donnie is a (genetic)chimera/hermaphrodite count? It's a cross of the OT/movies with some 2K3 sprinkled in, but that's the biggest difference. This is for my main AU tale, not the "mirror-verse" one. Only Mikey and Splinter know of his dual-gendered nature. And Bishop is trying to "convince" them to co-operate with his research, by bribing them with the prospect of creating females. While he's spying on them, of course. And the Wyvern gargoyles exist side-by-side within the same universe. It's complicated.

This would probably work:

Almost the same story, Oroku Saki chases Hamato Yoshi from Japan to the USA. Four turtles fall into New York City sewers and are mutated by an extraterrestrial ooze that had arrived on Earth. But when the turtles are at a very young age (and Splinter has just began pracicing some moves), Baxter Stockman tests his mousers and destroy the sewer tunnels and the turtles are separated from Splinter. (or Shredder attacks the swers knowing Hamato Yoshi, who is Splinter, is there)

All turtles survive and escape. During their childhoods, they live with some other people who take care of them, in different part of the world.

Just when the turtles are about to become teenagers, Shredder and Krang attack New York City. Splinter must now journey and find his four students, summon them and take them home, practice with them to train them to defeat the bad guys (if they begin training at 12, they will first take down thugs like Big Louie, Tony Vivaldi, Pinky McFingers and Beaver Cleaver and Wally Cleaver, before being prepared to take down Shredder and Krang at 14).

A very, very simple and streamlined Origin;

Hamato Yoshi is a modern Japanese Ninja Practitioner, one of these guys who practices the ancient martial art to keep it alive. Having immigrated from Japan to New York teach ninjitsu to people in stunt work and the television and film industry, he is a good and honorable man with a good sense of ethics. After the death of his wife, Tang Shen, Yoshi decided to avert his loneliness by going to the pet store to buy a pet. While looking around at the various pets, Yoshi gets bit by a rat in a cAge that manages to pierce his skin. Finally, he decides to buy four turtles, and leaves the shop with them in a glass bowl.

But as he was leaving the pet store, a TCRI truck, careening out of control, lost a canister that was sent flying, and smashed all over Yoshi, and the four turtles in the open bowl he was carrying. Yoshi stumbled into an alleyway, dropping the bowl, as a startling metamorphosis took place. Finding himself with a new-found adopted family, Yoshi- now splinter- quietly cleans out his old apartment, and moves himself and his new family into an abandoned subway terminal that connects to the sewers.

Over the next fifteen years, Splinter teaches his adopted children (filling the void left by his dead wife in his heart) teaches his four sons the art of ninjitsu- not only to defend themselves from a world that would never accept them, but also to defend the world above from monstrous threats. And it all changes when a nosy reporter attacked by a street gang comes stumbling into the Sewers...

Reasons;

1.) There really haven't been any ninja clans since at least the Meji restoration. Reconstructionists are where you are going to find modern practicing ninjas, not modern ninja clans running around in kabuki pajamas in modern day New York. Yoshi was probably trained by another modern practitioner, and never was part of a clan himself.

2.) This origin cuts all direct ties to specific villains or threats- yeah, you can later go into where the ooze came from, or some other such thing- but you don't need that information for the origin itself.

3.) The foot can still be worked in- Ororku Saki is a yakuza warlord, who admires the old ways, and tries to create a criminal organization in New York that combines ancient ninja techniques with modern weaponry. The foot is a recreation of an old ninja clan, not a super-secret group that survived the meji for some contrived and idiotic reason.

4.) An abandoned Subway junction is more sensible than some large, multi-room apartment-like complex just existing in the sewer for no good reason.

I'm not saying the goofier and wackier elements can't be brought in afterword, but I'd start the story in grounded reality, before taking off into the craziness and weird stuff.

I'll have to think on this a bit but I gotta say I'm really digging this AU here: http://dashing-and-demure.tumblr.com/post/96412450645/history-of-the-hampson-hamato-family

If it can be done like a parody so it's purposely pointed out who Shredder is (esp if we can do a series of these with different people as Shredder - including Bay! - and all get a beat down from the Turtles), I want this so bad... lol

I also want Baxter Stockman to be Asian, April to be black, Krang to be a vision in Shredder's head, Bebop and Rocksteady to be animals before mutation, and have millions of references to Venus De Milo.

Baxter Stockman as an Asian? ... I'm imagining Hideo Kojima. April as a black girl? Lupita Nyong'o.

Nice.

From the "battle of the gods" post from earliar.

Thinking "Same as it Never was" in this universe is an outcome from if Shredder wins the the "Power of God" in which case he forms the universe in his own image. Donatello is sent to this future to view this outcome from the help of this Time's April and Lord Simultaneous (Whom in this universe just looks like Draco)

I had another idea

when it comes time for the "Leonardo" micro, instead of Leo or Raph getting beaten, it is Mikey

and when the fight in the "second time around" happens, Nobody is there to help
