Hi, everyone! :)

I wanted to start a thread for all of the Drome's writers. Here you can talk about your original creations, publications, share writing ideas, and get feedback on your work. Also, feel free to talk about your writing process; I'm sure a lot of us would love to hear it! I am also interested to know: what inspires you? Do you have a muse? Do you like to write for a particular genre or audience? These are questions that all writers tend to ask themselves at one point or another. So let's share!

(Also, I wasn't sure if this should go in the 'Books & Lit' section or not. Since it's original, I decided to put it in 'Everything Else')

Good idea, but this might work better in the Fan-fic section.

I'll start out by saying that TMNT isn't the only type of fiction I write. I primarily started out writing supernatural romance (IE- vampire romances novels), fantasy, and some horror and sci-fi. All original material. Then I (re)discovered comics, and started doing comic book script-writing with my own on-going comic hero series "Red-Back: Son of the Spider". Yes, it's the offspring of Spider-Man, who inherited his dad's powers, and THEN SOME. He's a mutant (a la X-Men). That series also involves (SPOILER ALERT!) the death of Spidey himself. And the death of at least one X-Man as well.

Now I mostly do the TMNT stuff, but I still have my fantasy novel trilogy and Red-Back tales, which I occasionally still play with.

Funny you started this thread; after finishing my current original novel "Asylum" in December, I've finally sent query emails to four different agents tonight! Horror/thriller, all taking place in an insane asylum on the dawn of a city-wide apocalypse. (see my signature)

I've also self-published a trilogy of post-apocalyptic novels called "Blood Island" and some Sherlock Holmes mysteries. (see the link in my signature)

And I got my start writing scripts for fan fiction audio drama Star Trek series, before those series completely tanked. You can actually listen to a couple of my episodes that were produced before plugs were pulled and people jumped ship.

This is a great idea, Senpai! :)

I've got a super-hero story of sorts in the works, although I haven't really had the inspiration for it in about the year now (inspiration has been nonexistant, plus it's a logistical nightmare). It's based off of a couple of dreams I had a couple of years ago. It involves a villain who, intending to build his own army, has been messing with the logistical/genetic aspects of people (basically, selectively breeding them without their knowledge), so that every individual is basically handcrafted for his own purposes. What he didn't count on was those individuals developing their own thoughts and moral fabrics (and hence later models are created to be a lost less autonomous). I'd love to finish it someday, or even start it past a few snippets I've written, but I'm such a perfectionist that I doubt that will ever happen.

I'm one of those possibly weird writers who doesn't write anything in order. I write what I know, and then fill in the spaces later.

I'm betting comic book script-writing can be a lot of fun. :) I'm a Spidey fan myself. Where can I find Red-Back: Son of the Spider? I'd like to check it out. I don't think I'd be a very good fanfiction writer. Like, I wouldn't know what to write that the show/movie hasn't already done. What's your TMNT fanfiction like? Do you stick to a certain type of series (like the '12 or '03 or comics)? Do you create new characters? I think that if I wrote TMNT fanfiction I would just create a bunch of mutants xD I think it would be so fun to write for an episode of TMNT '12. It's such a fun series. But, you know, I don't think I could write for Raphael. He's so rude! It's very hard for me write like that. I think it would come off horribly forced.

Amazing! How's the self-publishing going? I'm interested in the Asylum project you are working on. I love horror novels. It's actually my favorite genre! Do you have a release date in mind? You have a lot of finished pieces which is fantastic! I don't have anything officially finished. I'm working on a novella right now. It's kinda weird. I don't know if anyone would read it though, haha! Keep me in the loop!

Thanks, CaliperCat! Aren't dreams crazy like that?! I keep a dream diary. Sometimes I get some really cool scenes from dreams so I know exactly what you mean. I keep my diary near my bed so in case I wake up from a brilliant dream, I better log it because no matter how often I tell myself 'don't forget this--don't forget this' I sure as hell forget. Does your superhero have any superpowers? I don't think you're weird writing out of sequence. A lot of writers I know tend to do that. Just never throw it away. Sometimes you gotta write something just to get it out. And if you decide to not use it in your story, at least you have it for yourself and it may serve a purpose in one of your next pieces. :) With the story I'm writing now, I'm trying to keep it novella-length but since I'm so used to novels I tend to write more so I toss that idea because it's too much. But getting it down on paper/MS Word doc and out from your head is refreshing and still gratifying to me.

Maybe I should start keeping a dream diary as well! I have some pretty crazy ones, although I don't think I could write about the dream I had last nice (a bison tried to jump a fence and got caught in it, and I had to free her. No clue where that came from!). I've actually got four heroes who do have powers, although I'm still working out the powers with them. If you'd like to know in more detail what they are, it'd be best if I just attached them as a document, because otherwise this post would be a whole page long! I actually keep a "dump" document precisely for the purpose of keeping all of my little snippets, so that they never end up getting lost somewhere.

What's the story you're writing now about? I definitely understand having difficulty keeping stories short, as I tend to be a lengthy writer as well. I was writing a fan-fiction many years ago, and the chapters were all approaching about 6,000 words a pop. :teek: Actually, part of my problem is trying to get the ideas in my head out on a document or on paper- I can have something brilliant in my head, but it never comes out the same way on paper. Do you have any tips?

To answer your questions, yeas, it IS a lot of fun, once you get the hang of it. I don't usually do panel-by-panel, but tend toward the "Marvel style" that Stan used to use, where you basically sketch out the broad story action in short paragraph form, and use dialog and/or inner monolog like in movie-scripts, plus sound effects, and use just enough description to show what's happening. All my fics are on my ff.net page, so you can see them there, or on the author page in my siggy, as I post them there, too.

As for my TMNT stuff, I mostly work in my own AU version that sort of throws a little bit of everything from all versions in. For instance, it's MAINLY based in the OT/90's movie-verses combined, with a few things from other versions, like Hun and Bishop, Leatherhead as an ally, a few one-off nods to Venus and Ninjara/Alopex (Shredder comments to Krang about wanting to turn the OC into a fox at one point), Silver Sentry (Mikey's favorite comic book, though he doesn't actually exist in this particular world), Klunk, Xever (as a human) and Fong from Nick, and bits like Raph being the Nightwatcher, four different lairs from OT, 90's films, and 2K3, and Mikey gushing about wanting a guitar to go with the drums Raph got for his 18th birthday so they can start a band (the COoOS tour)! And little things like that. I use Lotus from the OT instead of Karai. (Karai didn't even exist yet when I first started writing it back in 6th grade in 1990!) Also Mona Lisa, some head-canon stuff like Donnie being mildly addicted to coffee, Leo doing origami, and Mikey being an artist and liking to dance.

So far, I've done three stories set in that AU- one of which is also a Gargoyles crossover- and have three or four more in the works for it. (One is Leo-centric, the others are sequels to the main one, however, none of them are "ready" for posting yet.) The rest are stand-alone drabbles, one is a turtle-tot story, and I also have a tragic tale set in the OT (with Kurtzman from Nick added, but his backstory is changed), and another AU where the turtles and Splinter are the bad guys, with Shredder/Krang, etc. being the good guys (a reverse OT world).

I also have ONE T-cest experiment story in the works (with a second possibly on the way), another is April/Casey-centric (That one is NC-17, LOL!), and a Donnie tale that's- let's just call it mildly disturbing in where it goes- and a Mikey-centric "April Fool's Day" story. So far, though, the Donnie, April Fools, April/Casey, and T-cest tales are not posted anywhere, as they are barely started, and I may not get around to them for a while. So, I guess you can say I do a LOT of different things!

And although I haven't managed to fit them in yet, I'm DYING to use Hob, Fugitoid, and Usagi. So far, only Usagi has actually been mentioned, but I DO have a story planned with him set in my main AU.

I started a thread earlier if anybody read TMNT fanfiction:

It could give an interesting perspective on what some members are interested in reading.

Yeah! Feel free to share them. I'd like to read them sometime. :) Your dreams sound like mine. A bison! How bizarre! Anyway, I'm sure you'll figure something out for their powers. Powers can be so fun to create.

It's hard to just openly discuss what I'm writing about. I always get funny looks or ‘awww’s from people when I tell them I’m writing a story about pigs. They assume I'm writing for children or imagine it’s going to be a fun(ny) story. Anyway, it’s a survival story about a group of pigs escaping a farm when they learn they’re going to be killed. My objective is to subtly educate people about pigs through my narrative (they are my favorite animals!) while playing around with some of the facts to make the story interesting.

To answer your question, I find it very helpful to listen to music while I set up a scene. Music like movie and/or video game soundtracks. Nothing with lyrics--that's too distracting. When I need to get something out and I’m having trouble, I’ll listen to a song that I think captures that scene well, and I’ll just write. I don’t worry about spelling or how coherent my sentences are. After I feel like I got the gist out, I turn off the music, go back to edit and clean up what I did. At least then I got out the pivotal points that I was struggling with before and can now focus on the actual writing part. This may not work for everyone but it may be worth a shot for you.

You have a lot of awesome headcannons! I like the Nightwatcher idea for Raph. I wish Nick’s series did something like that. 6th grade! Awesome! You’ve been a long-time fan of TMNT :D The reverse world sounds very interesting haha! I can’t imagine the turtles/Splinter being baddies! I love Hob. I think you should use him in your next fanfiction! He’s such an awesome character. Usagi is cool. I haven’t read the comics or know too much about him but I love the character design. Plus, I love the whole samurai code of honor thing. Like, I just love samurai movies and Usagi seems like he’s the epitome of all that.

Is there any way that you could submit your story ideas to Nick? It would be cool if you could co-write with them for an episode! I think that would be so fun, but I don’t know how this stuff works xP How is your paranormal original piece coming along?

Most of my drawings feature them in horror though, some of them being symbols for insanity. I even have a full Russian boar hide from Poland, and a small skin of a piglet, both of which I hope to 'restore' back into looking like their piggy selves.

I do that too. I use it to draw with, although I can't do use while I write, as it would end up making it hard for me to visualize scenes. But I wish I could, some of the music I do listen to would end up kind of fitting for some of the stuff I do. :)

I'm not a very good drawer. But if I did draw more, I'd draw my pigs as symbols for sophistication and intelligence xD They would wear suits, a monocle, and hold a pipe in one hand while they read a book by Plato in front of the fire. What do you mean by 'restore' them back to their piggy selves? :teek: What are you going to do?!

Self-publishing is very much a product of your own initiative. For Blood Island and my take on Sherlock Holmes, it was simply a means to print my own books and hold them in my greedy sweaty trembling hands. The feeling of holding your own book in your hands is utterly unique... the closest thing to it is holding your newborn child in your hands. (And I've done both. Both are amazing, sort of similar, but utterly unique.)

However, if Asylum does not eventually take off in traditional publishing, I aim to go back to self-publishing and seriously up my game. See what happens. I got my first rejection letter for Asylum earlier today. :tlol: I was originally hoping to release Asylum this summer, but now I'm figuring that if nobody has taken me up on the novel, to self-publish it in December or January. I'm still figuring it out... but now that I've gotten the load off my back in submitting query letters, I can resume working on "Rage", an indirect sequel. Already 100 pages in, looking forward to getting back to it...

The vast majority of people won't understand or will just think your ideas are "cute" (or "weird"). You just gotta do it anyway. I particular piece of advice I just found was "Write the book because you f*cking want to write the book." As long as that is your primary motivation, ain't nobody gonna stop you.

And I think your pig idea sounds awesome. Much more "Animal Farm" than "Babe." Just because it involves animals doesn't mean it's kiddy or undeserving.

Making the initiative is sometimes the hardest step--for me, anyway. I think that's great that you are able to print it and actually hold a copy of your own work. Is self-publishing expensive? I've never heard of someone comparing it to their baby. That's amazing. You must really love being a parent as much as you love writing! :D

I wish you the best of luck getting Asylum published. Keep trying. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to get someone to take it.

I like your advice! :tlol: I will do just that. :D Thank you. I hope it turns out the way I want it to. I know it's going to require a lot of editing because I want the narrator to have a specific tone and sometimes when I write just to get my ideas out I really lose that.

What do you mean by 'restore' them back to their piggy selves? :teek: What are you going to do?!Well, I'd have to get the drawings to the scanner in the library, as I don't have a scanner to upload them myself. One is a bit gory, I don't know if the mods would let me have such a picture in the art section or not, although if they don't I can just PM you a picture. The other is a Legend of Zelda one of 80's cartoon Ganon, but what is scary about this guy is that I 'stripped' of all of his goofiness, and made him something I would be afraid of. I like him a lot, and I kind of made him almost like a cross between Slenderman and a ghost

As what I mean by 'restore,' the wild boar that I got was originally cut flat to be a rug. Fortunately he never had any felting on him, so a lot of it now is mainly sewing him edge to edge back up in the right way and hoping they haven't trimmed too much of his edges. I had to 'relax' the hide in a solution when i got him and then oil it, as it was quite stiff when I got him, as he was sold as a rug and they thought he'd end up flat on the floor or something. Of this guy, I have a feeling he is likely a male pig, since he doesn't have the prominent nipples of a female, and the way he looks colored on a part of his belly there was probably a penis there at one time. Unfortunately they had cut of the end of his nose and the edges of his lips, so I will likely have to tan a new nose for him and maybe lips, which I won't try yet until he is mostly stuffed and articulated (I want to be able to pose him and stand him up.) I badly want to have a foam form or something set into his head, because I want to give him jaws and tusks and be able to open and close his mouth and be able to put the glass eyes glass eyes I got for him into it. He also has a nice tall mohawk, and I'd love to make him posed in such a way that it stands out. :P

With the piglet, I just might stuff with fluff as a regular 'soft mount' since she is soft enough and fuzzy enough for that to work. She's jet black and pretty, with hair that is almost as soft as a puppy's. :D

I find it very helpful to listen to music while I set up a scene.

Hey! I listen to music while I write, too, actually, and I also write scenes "out of order" at times. However, I actually like using music with lyrics when I write, especially songs that have titles and/or lyrics that really "fit" the tone or action or emotions of the scene I'm working on. Like the scene I was doing today for Love Is Shell (my "main" AU fic) I decided to name the chapter title "Of Rage and War" (the title of a song by Savatage), since it really fits with what is happening in that chapter. I do that a lot, actually, I'll find lyrics or song titles that work for whatever scene or chapter- or even short story!- I'm doing, and use the title or a line from it for the title. My Some Other World fic was inspired by (and named for) an Elton John song of the same name- though the song is MUCH "cheerier" than the story, LOL! Funny thing, though, a lot of the songs I use are also from movie soundtracks, so we have that in common, too.

Heh, yea, Hob is awesome, and I'm thinking of putting Xever in (in his human form) again somewhere. Also, Usagi is one of my favorite "guest" characters in TMNT. I loved him in the OT series, as well as in the 2K3 one, and I've recently started reading his own comics, too. He's such a cool little guy, LOL!

As for the Nick thing, I'd probably have to become an established script-writer first. I doubt they'd pick some unknown to do an episode. Buuuut- that said, I HAVE done some script-writing for a web-comic competition that (if it had won) would have given me the chance to work with Stan Lee himself! I still have a copy of the sample I sent in, so at the very least, I can honestly say that Stan Lee has seen some of my work. So that's cool.

Well, I'd have to get the drawings to the scanner in the library, as I don't have a scanner to upload them myself.

I attached the document I'm currently using- it's just simple text, because the 'Drome didn't like uploading a Word one, so please bear with the simple format. The list of characters and their powers is at the top. It's a bit dated- for example, I don't think Alex is going to have to cut himself in order to give himself a metallic shell: I think I'll just have him be able to change his skin to metal at will, although unlike Colossus, he doesn't have to transform his entire body. Feel free to offer any thoughts if you have them. :)

I don't see how a story about pigs escaping a farm can't be fun! Although it sounds much more serious, from the sounds of it. My friend has a black mini-pig whom she bred to an even tinier mini-pig, and the piglets are due at the end of this month. I'll try to send you some pictures if I get any. I'm guessing you already have some personality traits picked out for your story pigs?

I'll definitely have to try that sometime, thank you! I used to really enjoy the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron soundtrack, so maybe I'll have to dig that one out and see if it inspires me. :)

Does anyone ever have stretches where they just can't seem to get anything out for days, and then BAM, you get on a roll and it just feels like you can't STOP?! I just had one of those. Absolutely. Haven't been able to write anything for my current novel "Rage" for almost a month, even though I had the entire next few chapters plotted out to a "T." Then I sat down and started writing it last night... flowing like ooze from a shattered TCRI cannister!

Good for you, Duckie! I definitely have days like that. Usually I do my best when my idea is new...once it goes a little stale, I lose my tempo then it becomes a chore to finish even if exciting, great things are soon to come. Got any tips? Or is the whole thing a mystery to you too? :D

If I start to find myself losing interest, I step back from the project for a bit and move to something else that I may have been neglecting, to see if it helps. Sometimes all you need is a bit of a "break" from the plot, and when you come back, it's with a fresh perspective and inspiration. That's why some of my tales have been on hiatus for a while- I come back to them when I get a new bout of inspiration for the story in question.

I finished ONE a long long time ago, and started another one and got about halfway through it, and they were at the time actually hosted online, but the site has since gone down. I was able to get the master copies back so I can edit them, but they haven't gone up anywhere since.

I honestly don't know if I will or not. They were kinda popular way back in the day, but we're talking, like, 2004-5, and people's tastes have radically changed and I kinda don't think anybody'd care now. I'm kinda trying to finish the one just because I never did, and someone's been kind of "advising" and giving me feedback on it, and it's going well. But once that's done I have no idea.

Breaks are great. But not too long of a break...that's how a lot of potential stories remain unwritten.

I finally wrote a short story for a 5 page comic I was asked to do. But even that felt like squeezing blood out of a stone :ohwell:

It's killing me because I have a ton of ideas for features, pilots, plays, musicals... But when it comes to actually writing lately I feel like I have nothing really to say. Which kills me. Hopefully this funk I'm in dissipates sooner than later because I'm getting sick of staring at a blank white Final Draft page every day.

Just do it, even if it's crap at first--you can polish it later. I've pushed myself to write even when I was brain dead and have no motivation. Sometimes just doing it will help you get it out and then you can elaborate and pretty it up more.

Currently working on Love Is Shell, my TMNT on-going romance. It's all in first-person POV from the two main characters- my OC and Mikey, who has his chapters in the form of journal entries. Almost finished with his latest chapter, which tells about what happened after making a deal with Krang to make him human for a day, and fills in a few of the gaps of what went on before they met up that day. It also shows his thoughts and feelings on what they did on their "date" during his day as a human, and- well, he's just really fun to write!

I also started a T-cest story (my first, and probably only one) and I have a plot bunny hopping around for a Quantum Leap crossover story which promises to be interesting. Sam will DEFINITELY have a hard time dealing with THIS leap! (And I imagine Donnie would have a field day with Sam's experiments.)

I started writing original fiction in high school but never really had concrete ideas. I started writing fan fiction when The Powerpuff Girls were still airing and I created my own episodes because I was tired of Cartoon Network showing the same episodes over and over again. Then I joined FF.Net in 2004 and started writing TMNT fan fiction, and I've never looked back.

One my biggest series I'm working on is my Truth and Lies series which is based off of the book series Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard and takes the TMNT through the ordeal the girls had with A. It's so much fun to write, but I've hit a wall for now, and I hope I can finish it soon so I can start on my third story for it.

Here's a question- has anyone ever written something that they spent a lot of time and effort on, and it turned out really great, but you realize that it was SUCH a hassle that you never want to write anything like it again? My latest Gargoyles/TMNT chapter has a fight scene that involves 19 characters from both series, (plus a "lurker" off-scene who isn't directly involved, but will show up to throw more chaos into the mix) all in a three-way battle inside a museum. It was such a HUGE scene, and so complicated that I just- never want to do that again. Big battles in small, cramped spaces with lots of breakable elements are a PAIN!!

I, too, really struggle with the actual action bits sometimes. I'm a master of dialogue by comparison (or at least I like to think so) but keeping all of the action sequences in my head and making them believable is harder...

But at least I get to have epic moments like where I tell my wife to throw a punch at me, and then forget to duck because I'm trying to figure out how to write down what I'm physically doing. :tgrin:

Her laughing apologies and a kick-ass written fight scene more than made up for it. We writers will make any sacrifice for our art.

But man, I gotta quit teaching people how to throw a punch... they always end up better fighters than me. :tlol:

Okay, new question:

So I started binge-watching Quantum Leap last night and today, trying to get a feel for the show and the characters (mainly Sam and Al) for my new crossover TMNT fic. Problem is, I don't have a title, and I'm stuck on the actual purpose for Sam's "leap". I have wracked my brain, but I'm still coming up mostly blank on those two things. Anyone got any suggestions?

FWIW, I plan on having him end up in Donnie's body. (This is 90's movie-verse, BTW, set shortly after TMNT III.) Most of the story will center around Sam trying to wrap his head around exactly WHAT he's gotten himself into this time, while the others are all wondering what happened to their brother (they pick up that he's an "imposter" pretty quickly) and I was going to incorporate the Time Scepter somehow. I know it was broken at the end of the movie, but I figure Donnie might have been studying it and/or tinkering with it to either determine more on how it works, or to fix it.

My first instinct was to have Sam trying to stop some disaster from happening, like one of them getting killed, or them getting outted- something along those lines. But I'm stuck on exactly WHAT the issue is. So here I am looking for ideas....

You could go totally meta... Sam has to prevent TMNT from fading into obscurity so that the rights don't get sold to Platinum Dunes and the worst ever movie is produced. :tlol:

Thanks, CKD, but that wasn't exactly the direction I had in mind. Anyway, I finally managed to come up with an idea- Sam is supposed to prevent Don from getting zapped by the Scepter into a different time (or "out of time") a la SAINW, (but without the dystopian future- I'm using the movies-verse so that part doesn't apply) which would cause the others to all separate and end up getting killed later. Also have a "working" title. Going with "A Matter of Time" for now. So.... Good? Bad? Thoughts? Sorry to bother anyone with this, I was just having a harder time than usual collecting my thoughts on the actual storyline. But once I started the opening scene, it all just sort of fell into place! And so far, it's turning out pretty funny- but still serious, if that makes any sense.

So how's the Muse treating you fellow writers?

I've been away from my writing desk for a few months, and had a crisis of faith concerning my current novel just a week ago. I was ready to throw in the towel and trash six months' and 177 pages' worth of work, but after completing the re-read, I got the fever back. Now I'm just trying to pick it back up, for the first time since... I dunno, June or July?

What about you guys?

Halestorm.... Not can't say that I have. As far as Nightwish goes, Nemo is my favorite, if only because it's both the first one I heard of theirs, and that it (supposedly) is about a dark elf, "lost" in both the literal and figurative sense. Apparently, said elf is searching for her identity outside of the strict, matriarchal totalitarian/theocratic society they live in, which basically stresses House and deity over all else, and ruthlessly weeds out the "weak" (read- compassionate, altruistic, or otherwise non-evil) by stamping out nonconformist ideas and all other paths but those deemed acceptable by a cruel demon-goddess. (And anyone who's ever played any old-school D&D adventures in the Underdark knows why this song fits the concept, which makes it awesome!)

I'm kind of like you in that I usually have music going when I write, but in my case it's usually a mix of songs that fit thematically with what I'm working on. I have several playlists, each one geared toward the writing project that it is designed for. I have TMNT, fantasy, general superhero, and romance playlists, as well as a couple of others that are just for general listening depending on my mood. There's a bit of overlap on several of them, Like my TMNT has a lot of the same tunes as my superhero and general 80's ones, and then there are some like my dance and Gargoyles lists (for my crossover fic) that are more unique. Then there are a few character playlists for times when I really need to get into a character's head, like individual ones for the four turtles (Raph's is very loud and harsh, obviously, LOL!) or my original characters Hunter Parker and his evil doppelganger Darkspider for my Marvel stories. The fantasy one is mainly for my drow bard's trilogy, as well as some other tales set in the same world.

Oh, cool! I like that list so far.

For Raph, a lot of old school metal and grunge, some classic rock, and a few early rap and R&B, mostly. Black Betty (mainly because of that diner fight in 07 movie), AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, some Tone Loc, Beastie Boys, Bad Company, Black Veil Brides, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, ect.

Mikey is easy. Lot of 80's and 90's pop and rock, metal, hip-hop, and especially dance and party hits. Foreigner, Guns n Roses, Van Halen, Heart, Aha, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie, to name a few. He likes power ballads in my head-canon, for some reason. And anything bouncy, fun, and dancable!

Donnie is the eclectic one. Classical, electronic and techno, showtunes, and some Euro and J-pop. Tangerine Dream, The Cure, Moby, Beethoven, Tchykovsky, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and some ethnic or new wave mostly.

Leo was the hardest to pun down, I finally decided on some mainstream and classic rock, a little country, and traditional Japanese music, as well as a few random choices that seemed to fit his mindset. Also, some 50's and 60's rock and roll- Beatles, Chubby Checker, Temptations, Elvis, and others. Don't know why, I just think he'd be old-fashioned that way, LOL!

Do you find that listening to songs with lyrics interferes with writing? That's always been my personal experience.

I like the music choices, and I totally agree... Leo would definitely be the hardest to pin down. I always figured it would be similar to the Nick Leo in that he would have this one hilarious fandom (his sci-fi television show... whatever it was) and that would manifest with his taste in music: outlaw country, or easy listening, or something else off the wall. :tlol:

Found my "Asylum" soundtrack... I don't even remember some of these songs. Gonna have to give 'em a listen...

ASYLUM SOUNDTRACK

Freak Like Me - Halestorm
The Monster - Eminem
Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men
Uprising - Muse
Shot in the Dark - Within Temptation
Didn't I - Montgomery Gentry
Skillet - Hero
Burn It to the Ground - Nickelback
Phoenix - Fall Out Boy
Light 'Em Up - Fall Out Boy
Get Out Alive - Three Days Grace
Animal I Have Become - Three Days Grace

Interesting. I have a few of those in my playlists, too. As for vocal music interfering, I'd have to say no. Often I find that the lyrics actually inspire me with new ideas, or by helping me grasp the mood or tone of a given scene emotionally or with dialog. (I've been known to have characters sing a line or two on occasion, especially in humorous scenes- at one point in my Love Is Shell tale, Mikey is caught singing in the shower by the main character, and she later teases him by asking when he's going on tour. I used a few lines from a Meat Loaf song for that scene. Or in my dark elf saga, the main character is a bard, and in one scene he meets a little girl who heard him singing a song he had just been working on during a rain storm. I also sometimes use lines or titles of songs as story or chapter titles.

Now that I'm home on my PC, here's just a few examples from each turtle's lists:

Leo: Bob Segar- Old Time Rock and Roll
Chuck Berry- Johnny B. Goode
Bon Jovi- Never Say Die
Journey- Midnight Train(Don't Stop Believing)
Rex Allen Jr.- Last of the Silver Screen Cowboys
Autopilot Off- Raise Your Rifles
Tom Petty- Won't Back Down
Yellowcard- City of Devils
Hall and Oates- Private Eyes
Beatles- Twist and Shout
Cat Stevens- Cats In the Cradle
Eddie Rabbit- Driving My Life Away

Raph: Korn- Freak on a Leash
Quiet Riot- Bang your Head
ZZ Top- Bad Girl
Ozzy Osbourne- I Don't Want to Stop
Queensryche- Walk in the Shadows
Megadeath- Angry Again
Limp Bizkit- Break Stuff
Eagles- Life in the Fast Lane
Iron Maiden- Can I Play With Madness
Drowning Pool- Bodies
Tone-Loc- Wild Thing

Mikey: Redbone- Come and Get Your Love
Tom Cochrane- Life Is a Highway(NOT the cover by Rascal Flats!)
Carl Douglas- Kung Fu Fighting (I see him doing a dance-off to this)
DeBarge- Rhythm of the Night
Snap!- The Power
Aha- Take On Me
Marky Mark & funky Bunch- Good Vibrations
Will Smith- Summertime
Men Without Hats- Safety Dance (I see him obnoxiously bugging his brothers with it, LOL!)
Cyndi Lauper- Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen (another one he'd annoy them with!)
Right Said Fred- I'm Too Sexy (again- obnoxiously playing it loudly and singing or dancing to it!)

Donnie: Beethoven- Moonlight Sonata
Adiemus- Water Dance
Falco- Rock Me Amadeus
ELO- Fire On High
Harold Faltermeyer- Axel F
Enigma- Sadeness, Pt. 1
Origa- Inner Universe
Andrew Lloyd Webber- Music of the Night
Chess- One Night in Bangkok
Handel- Pastoral Symphony
Riverdance- Firedance
Roxette- Joyride
John Williams- Duel of Fates
Mighty Dub Kats- Magic Carpet Ride

Not just yet. I'm definitely making a push to have three pilots finished by the years ends and take them to my boss (he's an executive producer) to consider me for story coordinator or writers assistant next season(assuming we're picked up). So fingers crossed on that :)

There's also a chance I'll make a comic out of this script, too. An artist friend of my mine read it and really wanted to draw it.

I've been doing writing here and there with fics, so that's been fun. Going to do a wrestling fan fic that was a request from a fellow writer for their birthday, so that's going to be a good one to do.

I do want to get into original fiction though and have an idea about a writer who gets stalked by one of her biggest fans and she must outwit said stalker. It's only a vague idea, but I'm really into it and want to start writing it. My sis told me about this book she got from the library that talks about how to get published and she's been thinking of doing so herself. I might check that book out and see where it goes, but I really want to start doing it, so I might. My working title for said story is Nowhere to Run.

That is a story I would love to hear, when you feel like telling it. My curiosity is peaked!

Well, as far as ideas... what interests you? Fiction or nonfiction? Science fiction? Fantasy? Mystery? Thriller? Horror?

I'd say start by picking a few distinct genres. Also, watch some of your favorite movies... then sit back and critically review them in your mind. Why are these your favorite movies? What themes are common? What character types? What draws you to these stories? (You can, of course, do the same with books, or TV shows, or comics... story medium of your choice.)

I've generally stayed away from this thread because I don't fancy myself a writer as much as I do an artist and roleplayer, but the latter does involve writing, you're just generally only writing the POV of one character.

...Well, I'm doing a long-term RP story with a friend that involves both of us writing several characters at once. It sounds confusing, but I'm actually adoring it. You know that moment when you start writing a character and you realise, holy ****, I LOVE writing this character, she's so fun? That's me right now.

I consider RPing to be writing because you're typing out a story for a character you're playing whether it be a fan character or a regular character from whatever fandom you're working in. And I hear you about writing characters that are fun. I get like that a lot.

Long story on her, but I am practically failing English because I'm getting no assistance. A few weeks ago cemented my anger. But, best to do it on PM, don't want to sound like an angry jerk. The advice I appreciate though dude. :)

Here was an excerpt of something I wanted to do for TMNT one day. It's at the end of an episode where the Rat King is the villain, primarily as the season antagonist.

Why do I proceed with such vicious tactics? It can be addressed of any civilization or species for why they proceed. Humanity from what you saw consists of doing what is done to get an individual to succeed, not multiple citizens. Its been like this for millennia and improvement has been a desperate struggle.

Look through with all civilizations since researching what made our world what it is. You have tyranny which results in a slow decline to a man's psyche. In addition, imagine all those discriminated suffering prejudice based on their appearance, what they do personally or even just born in a particular family. Whether it be verbal threats or merciless lashing on man, all do what they believe is justified.

Before I was transformed into the cretin I am now, I studied what this world is like. Even in modern society, it NEVER improves. You have children cursed with low self esteem, bullied into near suicide where they aren't accepted. It is distasteful for me to continue, as they only fear to be happy alone, breaking those around them physically, mentally, verbally and through other methods of abuse.

Humanity has lost all its virtues and respect, and it will suffer the tortures of the damned when all concludes. For I am no longer a man with ambition that rushes into conflict, but a hero to the suffering. I am the Rat King, and when I finish, I will view the ultimate destruction of man!

It needs some adjustments though.

Nice. So based on the IDW version of Rat King?

Yours truly has yet to read an IDW comic. ;) I am planning to in the future, that is if I can find any comic stores around here. Tell me though, what is that version of the Rat King anyways?

Kinda a mixture of most versions of the character, primarily the Nick version and if IDW does match up. :)

Oh friend... oh fellow writer! You are deprived of the best version of TMNT ever.

This Rat King is a member of the Pantheon, a family of elder gods who manipulate and twist mortals to their will in an eternal game of domination and conquest.

Need that comic book, gotta make money. :ohwell:

So, that's Rat King? Pretty interesting version. :) With how I wrote it, RK is more of a man that slowly begins to despise the human race, probably mixed in with some elements of Scarecrow possibly. I want to personally end the Rat King where he unleashes a mutated black death on the world, probably distract the turtles in a trap designed around their failures after they are goaded into attacking with failure.

I have some doubts on if I how I wrote it works in the IDW style, guess those who read may judge. I also want to unleash a backstory on a particular character underused, but don't want to spoil yet as the ideas all need writing.

Interesting. I have been kicking around some ideas myself for the sequel to my Love Is Shell fic, but can't decide whether to use Hob or Tiger Claw. Either way, he'd be an independant player in the story, as a secondary threat to the two main enemies, Bishop and Oroku Pimiko/Kazuo. The latter duo are seeking revenge, and Bishop is after the turtles (and their new family) for their DNA. I'd like to have a darker version of the Mutanimals, where some mutants want to fight for recognition by humans. The turtles would be caught in the middle of it all, and have to defend their newfound freedoms and their secrets.

It seems interesting Ducky. :) I guess it depends on what tone you are using, a twisted Tiger Claw could work or Hob depending on how you use them. Personally, use whichever you prefer over the other, I look forward to seeing it!

Duckie, I will read the HELL out of that. Especially if it's Old Hob. :tlol:

You've got me so excited on that idea, what is Love is Shell? Basic premise?

As far as my own writing is concerned... ugh. I keep hitting walls, but I'm around 200 pages in. Can't walk away. Too much good stuff, with lots of rewriting necessary. Think I'll push on with new material and save rewriting for later...

The problem is I love em BOTH, lol! TC would be great as an independent bounty hunter or assassin, though Hob makes a better dark Mutanimals member. Just not sure which direction would be more interesting or fun.

CKD, I don't know if you've checked out my Tale of Two Clans story, but Love Is Shell is the "parent" story, which mostly deals with Mikey falling for a girl they rescued and how it creates a rift between him and his brothers, due to them trying to dissuade him from his crush out of fear that he will get his heart broken. There's also some jealousy from Leo on account of how his own relationship with Lotus ended badly, and of course plenty of action with Shredder and Krang, Bishop, and even the Rat King makes an appearance. I'm currently working on the final battle in the Technodrome, which the pair of lovebirds have already escaped from before. This story also sort of hinges around two episodes of the OT series, namely The Gang's All Here and Donatello's Degree, so that might give you a hint about what goes on in the story.I've mentioned before that Donnie has been keeping a huge secret of his own from them, and it ties into the degree episode through use of one of the gags in that episode as a serious issue for Donnie. As for the other episode, Mikey has decided he wants a do-over of that opportunity, and it gets him into serious trouble.

Indeed! I've FINALLY gotten back to work on my Two Clans tale, and the next chapter is going to be a real heart-breaker for some folks. Someone didn't make it out of the fight in one piece.... (Hint, it's not a gargoyle.) Also, I'm thinking a certain corporate mogul with a castle atop his New York tower may start taking a keen interest in a certain bunch of green teens, heh. And we have dragons and "demons" coming up!

Can I get some peoples' advice?

I typically don't read fantasy and I have no experience with world building... If I'm interested in writing a fantasy story, does it require research and reading up on other fantasy authors for pointers and references? I'm really confused how to go about this

Also, fantasy names, races, and locations... How do you guys create these?

Thanks!

Reading fantasy genres may help you if you want to create something you've never done before. As for names, just think something up that sounds cool and go with it. You could also base it on research of other fantasy stuff. That's what J.K. Rowling did for her Harry Potter series and it worked.

Been doing a lot of work on my Tales universe and I love working on these three stories. Just so much fun weaving things together.

Personally speaking, I had no interest in writing Fantasy until I started reading and watching Fantasy: Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, His Majesty's Dragon, The Aeons' Gate, Game of Thrones, The Raw Queen, The Lies of Locke Lamora, etc.

For characters' names, take regular names you like and substitute a letter: Jayke for Jake (this name is taken, by the way :twink:), Karyn for Karen, Chriss for Chris... or remove a letter. Jak for Jack, Mak for Mack, R'chel for Rachel...

Manipulate names you like with removal and addition of letters, and eventually, you get some pretty wicked names.

Or Benjen Stark, great example! Obviously based on Benjamin.

Speaking as someone who has been heavily into fantasy for many years, it certainly helps to read some fantasy novels or short stories, or at least to watch some fantasy-based movies or TV shows. Here's what I've learned over the years from both reading and writing in the fantasy genre:

1. The most important thing is that the world needs to be cohesive and abide by its own in-world rules. Magic (if you use it) should be rare, difficult to learn, and most importantly, mysterious, unless it's used by everyone, in which case, it should still show some kind of effort being put into it, where people must learn how to use it or how to control it (if it's a natural gift). That means that even if THEY don't know how it works, YOU need to determine how it does. Physics and natural laws must also be logical for the world and consistent. If you have strange or unusual features in the world, there needs to be some kind of "laws of physics/nature" to explain them. That goes for creatures and flora. too.

2. Names should sound like they belong to the world. It's not always enough to change a letter or two in a name, unless the world is a near-analog of the real world. If it's pure fantasy, try looking on-line for fantasy name-generators, especially for races like elves, dwarves, or especially non-humanoid species like dragons or demons. The names should SOUND alien or fantastic to our ears! (Examples- elven: Andalar, Jaonos, Keryth, or Frellith for males, Aldyth, Filauria, Kestra, or Nimara for females, and family names like Silverthorne, Starleaf, or Mistraven, or more exotic last names line Riellis, Hunea, or Amallaeth. Dragons often have very strange-sounding names like Zar'kraesh, Azuroth, Vermithrax, or Avernix.)

3. Don't forget that different fantasy worlds have different levels of technology or civilization, and even within a world, there may be vastly different types of kingdoms or governments. One land may have a matriarchy, while another is ruled by the priesthood, or a king, High Council, or any type of government you can think of. But it MUST make sense and have some history that explains how and WHY it is run that way. Even if you don't go into he backstory of a nation, it's a good idea to figure out some basic history to give the lands a sense of "realness".

4. Also important is the TYPE of world. Is it Earth-like? A water-covered world? Is it broken apart and "floating" in space or the "aether"? Are there various lands that have their own physical rules or features that differ from the others? If your fantasy world is based on portals between very different types of elemental planes, there should still be something that ties them all together, a link or greater connection that makes them all part of the same setting.

5. Do your homework. If your main land is based around a certain culture, make sure you know something about that culture, even if you plan to alter it. If you're using Feudal Japan as a base, research a little on customs and culture, weapons, warfare, government and religious practices, and the like before trying to recreate it in the world. You can always alter details later, but you have to know what you're working with FIRST.

Basically, anything beyond this is up to you. But these are some basic ideas to think about and get you started. And also, it helps to think about how dark or mature you want the world/story to be. For instance, I have a couple of fantasy stories in my FF.net page that are at VERY different levels of maturity/ratings. My "Night of the Black Cat" tale (a one-shot) is the basic fantasy fare in rating-level, it's got some violence, magic, and an evil wizard, but it's relatively tame. My"Darksong" novel-length sotry, on the other hand, is VERY adult in nature, with some really dark themes and content, like brutal abuse, slavery, rape, torture, religious fanaticism, poison, assassination, murder, theft, mind-rape, drugs, etc....

Wow! Thanks so much, everyone for the wonderful advice. I'm not one to read fantasy so it's really strange I feel inclined to write one. I play fantasy video games...Perhaps that's the reason behind it. I also read lots of horror novels and short stories which often have fantasy elements.

I may look to the name generators and modify names that sound nice to me. Don't worry, Cylons--I won't take your name :P But you've given me some advice to work with.

Bubblyshell, I will definitely be doing some research. At this time, I don't feel like I have the patience to read traditional fantasy books. I've read the first Harry Potter though! I liked it... But just not enough to dedicate my time to the full series. I'd love to give the Dark Tower series a go though! Have you read those?

Duckie, excellent tips! I'll keep these in mind and look back to them when I'm writing. It sounds like you've been doing this for quite a while. I think what I'm probably gonna start out with is introduce the main character during an event that will kick-start the story and build on that. Such as the setting, time, and what the character desires.

I found this interesting (and silly) link that fantasy lovers might be interested in reading too.

I agree that the story should be driven by the characters and fantasy elements are there to make the tale interesting and fun. For some reason, the first thing that's coming to mind, and makes a good example is Avatar: The Last Airbender. We are all interested in the history and the wonders of this world (unless you hate the show ) but what we really want is to see how the characters develop and learn about their desires and what they are willing to do to get what they want, or what they are willing to sacrifice.

If you live in my state, I will drive hours across the rugged Texan desert and BUY you the books, just so you have to read them.

Seriously. I am unaware of any other book series that grows up with the target audience. Books 1 thru 3 are light and friendly, kinda like Roald Dahl's works, and then there's a HUGE tonal shift in the end of Book 4. Books 5, 6, and 7 are all more adult, focusing on a coming conflict.

I can't say anymore for fear of spoilers. But seriously, I'm a grown-ass man who, if you told me to pick the better fantasy book series, I'd take Harry Potter over practically anything. Sorry, George Double-R Martin.

I'm totally embarrassed I left the Harry Potter series off my first post. I'm gonna go get a magic pen and write "I will never forget to recommend Harry Potter" on a chalkboard until the words are permanently carved into the back of my hand. Spoilers. :twink:

You're welcome, senpai, and yes, I HAVE been doing it for a long time. As an RPG gamer (mostly as the DM) for over 20 years, I've had a LOT of experience with writing and world-building fantasy worlds. There are some good books on the subject, that might help you if you can find them, such as the Kobold Guide to World-Building by Wolfgang Baur, or Writer's Digest Writer's Complete Fantasy Reference, or How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy by Orson Scott Card.

And I'll chime in and agree that you should really read the Harry Potter books. They are one of the best children's series I've ever read, and even reading them as an adult, they are as good as Narnia or Oz!

Here's an assignment I had to do for English Honors, have to use the five senses with as much detail and elaboration as possible. Hoping it's good to the teacher, but any comments appreciated. :)

Awoken in a dim lit house, I find myself surrounded by fragmented canisters across the whole room, where a feeling of soreness greeted my revival from fatigue. Previous visions of the other night surprisingly didn’t accumulate; walking also became a grand annoyance from the unknown agony, resulting in my stumbling across the room mystified over the demolished residency. Thankfully, I uncovered a nearby flashlight with barely any light remaining to assist in traveling as I attempted to retrace my adventure from the previous evening. Surprisingly, a strange lament coming from the entertainment room appeared, resembling the voice of my roommate Jared. For any comrade to fall into a state of extreme despair is a frightening thought as I personally require all colleagues to remain content. Due to the eerie presence of the cries, I scrambled to advance despite the physical bruises and impaired bones, hoping to discover the issue in the household.

As I attempted to persist in remaining mute while traversing the house, the vanished memories slowly rebounded from the other night. With the bare remembrance of yesterday, I remembered Jared and I inviting a few people to our residency to spend the weekend. Throughout the previous twilight, all the attendees proceeded to recline and interact with one another in the festivities present; among the events included paintball wars and watching soccer. However, seemingly due to fatigue I fainted outside; the confusing aspect is how I reached my bedroom when I fell to the raw floor, making the return to the room an impossibility when unconcious. After seemingly taking an endless time period, my advent into the common room reached a conclusion; upon the meeting, a lifeless soul settled on the sofa.

Inspecting the area, the smell of sweat and distinctive drinks such as vodka and even fruit juice contaminated the room. The mere belief Jared was asleep was heavily flawed, as Jared’s heart wasn’t beating; Jared died the night before unbeknownst to me. Puzzled over how a man can party before passing on, I looked around for clues until I found a note from Jared, completely horrified. Before collapsing, Jared consumed an entire vodka bottle the night before; my initial beliefs stem from why Jared proceeded with such an idiotic decision. However I realized the circumstances behind the drinking: Jared at the time was suffering from depression after being fired from his job.

Although I created the party for Jared to recover, he refused to partake in the events and remained alone during the entire party. When I searched to bring him into the festivities, Jared utilized violence on me, screaming at me like I was his employer. Everyone was confused over the sudden tension heard, forcing me to escort the guests away; the second the final guest exited the premise, Jared attacked once more, rendering me unconscious. I can only assume the mayhem Jared caused and possibly damaging his friend caused him to finally break down, resulting in his demise. Ever since the infamous event, I’ve gone on to honor my fallen ally by naming an adopted child after Jared; even after progressing onward, I feel I am responsible for my friend’s demise for allowing the drinks inside. In hopes my child grows up a respected and honorable man, I only hope alcoholism never appears beyond the night I dread.

Hm, I'm also of the opinion "dim lit house" should be "dimly lit house". Not sure if it should be hyphenated, as well.

It is overall a pleasant and interesting read. Perhaps a little too academic sounding.

Also here I thought I'd stick this in here, a roleplay reply I wrote today that I had entirely too much fun with:

*Simon Blackquill had indeed managed to find at least some degree of sleep while the television was on. For some reason, listening to the voices and gunfights and ridiculous music was better than the silence -- perhaps because, although Simon preferred silence above all things, the sound served as a barrier of sorts. It kept him from thinking too deeply, from contemplating the grimness of his situation once more.

He had no such respite the following few days. He spent almost the entire time trapped in the guest room -- if he'd been asked, he would have called it a torture worse than the clink, but it would have all been a lie. He had access the softest bed he'd ever slept in, real food, and a window to look out of, to admire the city from. He was, however, far from happy. He was "free" from his cell, but not of being alone, and desperately desired the companionship of his closest friend to help free him from the agony of his own thoughts. From time to time, he'd open the window and whistle as loudly as his weakened lungs would let him, but alas, nothing came when he called.

Forced to remain behind a locked door, Simon grew restless, not unlike a bored housepet. His health was slowly improving, granting him a tad more energy, but nothing to do with it. While trapped in his own head, Simon ended up scraping the thick cuffs of his shackles against the floor to create anything resembling a distraction, marking the laminate flooring with deep dents.

Next came the walls -- thin, brittle, untrimmed nails scratched areas of the wallpaper clean off, while other areas got the hole treatment. At a few points, this resulted in his nails getting chipped, bent, or flat-out broken. One particular nail on an index finger was ripped almost completely off, resulting in a not-so-beautiful spillage of blood.

Most of this was done to release pent-up emotion, to keep himself from crying, but not only did tears fall anyway, he figured the damage would help further his goal in forcing the detective holding him to take him out. Take him out and lock him back up so he could wait for his execution, just as he'd been doing before. He didn't need any of this other nonsense. Within a few days, the guest room had become a damaged, foul-smelling dwelling that still managed to have better living conditions than Simon's cell in the clink.

Through most of those nights, almost no sleep would come to Simon Blackquill. It was no surprise that he was awake right as the sun was rising that morning... and that's when he deemed it the perfect time to open the window again and whistle, hoping the intended recipient of the call would hear it this lonely morning.

After about a minute, Simon heard a screech back, from somewhere in the distance. So he called again, and didn't need to do so after that, for just a few minutes later, a hawk wearing a distinctive striped bandana as a sort of makeshift collar was perched upon the windowsill.

Those are some good writing samples, guys. Net, I particularly liked your RP bit, it reminds me of some of the RP's I've done on-line. Here's an example of some of mine.

The drow listens to the story, and nods, but he laughs lightly at the minor gaffe by the human. "Ustdalharn is not a name, good sirrah, it is my rank within my family. I'm not certain if you speak the tongue of my people, but it means 'First Son'. Please, just call me Lothir. I am my father's chosen heir- or WAS, before I chose to abandon that birthright and all that goes with it. You see, in my homeland, our House rules over all the cities of Argonia, with my father as King. We have our High Councils, but each is divided between Matrons and Patrons of the Eight Houses of their cities. That probably sounds strange to anyone here, but where I come from, not all drow are BORN- surface-born elves who commit acts of high treason, murder, and such are often still subjected to the Curse of Dark Banishing; what you call the Descent. My father was one of those, Cursed to become as black of face as he was of heart. He took up piracy, and joined one of the most powerful Houses in our largest city. Eventually, he amassed a fleet of forces so powerful, and gained the alliance of so many of the males of all eight cities, that they staged a revolt that nearly toppled the Matrons for good. They finally called a truce, but the price was high. He claimed the place of head of the First House in our largest city, and King over all the rest."

He pauses to let that part sink in, before continuing his tale. "So far, none has dared to defy that rule, though the Matrons who remain chafe at his rule. And his League of Venom Daggers- a network of thieves, spies, assassins, and worse- keeps the Matrons in line through the constant threat of assassination or sabotage. The clergy of Lolth, as you call her, still has much power, at least within the Houses themselves, and the old laws still hold, but that is slowly changing- and not for the better. Other gods have found their way into our cities, but most of them are just as bad as she. Gods of death, thievery, murder, evil were-beasts, dark magic, un-death, lies, intrigue, even vanity- all have begun to be worshipped, at least in small numbers. Yet the Dark Maiden and those like her are still considered forbidden and punished as heresy. Even my own family would have had me slain had they known I followed her. As much as he needed me to secure his throne, my father would not have hesitated to kill me himself for that. That is ONE of the reasons I left."

He sighs as though brushing off some unhappy memory, then leans back. "As for your questions, I DO know something of both the lands and the Seven you speak of. In fact, Shadowdale is where I first entered this world, and I've been here for several years since that time. I've heard many tales of those Sisters, even of the Lady Quilue, though admittedly, I've never been to the Promenade. I HAVE however, visited Menzoberranzan and lived to tell the tale- in fact, there is an amusing story about that, if you'd like to hear it. I DO believe that some companions and I managed to pull off one of the greatest hoodwinks that city has ever seen! And in the Maiden's name, too, no less!" He chuckles, a mischievous gleam in his ice-blue eyes.

Lothir is the main character in my Darksong story, and also features in a second story that is a sequel to that one, called "Children of the Golden Flame". It's not on FF.net yet, but it IS posted at the site in my siggy.

so doing a small one-shot about a web show I found recently called "star darlings"
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/bb/83/fc/bb83fc91d39445cb50079e25da0d3776.jpg

in it

Scarlet dies

and I am working on an Ever After High/Silent Hill fanfic...haven't figured out a title yet...either Silent Ever After or Shattered Masks.

I am honestly just working on dark Ever After High stuff in general, like I have this one where Cedar (the next Pinocchio) becomes a full fledged doll and she has to witness the world around her move on.

I know I posted this already in the fan-fic pimping thread, but in case some missed it, here's the new chapter of Tale of Two Clans!

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9536626/9/A-Tale-of-Two-Clans

And I've finally decided that I will probably use Tiger Claw, as he fits well with Pimiko and Kazuo as a "hired gun". As much as I'd love to use Hob and some of the other Mutanimals, I kind of feel like that would be stretching myself too thin plot-wise. Plus, I've been kind of sparing with mutants in this series so far, only using the "main" ones from various versions, like Leatherhead, Mona Lisa, Slash, Tokka and Rahzar, Rocksteady and Bebop, and Baxter (who is in Dimension X anyway).

I'm strongly leaning toward not having any other mutants, although perhaps if I do a third story, I might include the human/mutant "war" there. I'm thinking TC could have been one of Shredder's experiments that was off on some mission, and returns only to find his boss dead, and delivers the news to his daughter. Any thoughts?

After 221 pages but a LOT of frustration, depression, and not writing, I've had to shelve my current project. "Rage" just isn't working anymore... maybe I can pick it up in another year or two, but for now, it's time to move on to a fresh project.

Thanks, Duckie!

"Soldiers of Time and Shadow" is going to be a time-travel science fiction story about a team of independent rogues thrown together working to change history while unknowingly being a central part of a conspiracy involving the very fabric of reality.

What starts as a basic bunch of time-traveling rogues assassinating various a$$holes from history turns into a trippy sci-fi conspiracy epic. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the various science theories I'm going to need to work with...

"It always comes back to Hitler, doesn't it?" Ulysses sighed. The big man looked down at the polished transsteel table surface in front of him and glared at his reflection. “Every time travel story you’ve ever read as a kid or any time travel movie you watched… it’s always about that damn little Nazi with the pathetic mustache.”

Taking out Hitler will be a fun little way to establish in the first chapter the goals of the characters, the rules of the game, and then make things very serious with the twist at the end of the chapter.

To quote River Song: "I have a gun; you have a time machine... what the hell, let's kill Hitler."

It's actually going pretty well right now! I've banged out a bit on four stories over the past few days- my Christmas Ninjas one-shot, A Matter of Time (my Quantum Leap crossover), A Tale of Two Clans (the Gargoyles one), and Love Is Shell. Then again, I've had a lot of "quiet time" to myself the past few days, with my hubby being in the hospital. When I come home after visiting him, there's not much to do but write to take my mind off things.

I hope his condition continues to improve, Duckie. Any idea when he gets to come home?

As far as Ulysses was concerned, 1921 in Nazi Germany might as well be heaven. He had a man to kill and a foamy mug of beer in his hand, and if everything went according to plan, human history would be better off by the end of the night. But for the moment, killing Hitler could wait… Ulysses was holding four eights.

Hey I don't know if this falls under the Writer's Corner material, but I did attempt an outline of making a Spider-Man movie based on a Youtube comment I made. Either way, new addition to the Mutant's Museum of Writing. :P So if making a Spider-Man movie, here's an idea:

Peter's origin as Spider-Man has already occurred and told through consistent flashbacks so the movie isn't weighed down reestablishing the origin everyone knows by heart. In either a late high school or early college setting, the audience is slowly introduced to Gwen and Harry respectively; in addition, we meet a fellow student rivaling Peter's smarts. Both are studying respective science fields until the fateful day where Peter is bitten, causing their relationship to decline. The student might end up accidentally coming into contact with a freak accident involving bees, destroying his physical appearance and shattering some of his mental mind.

As the story progresses, Peter is still juggling his life since the bite with Uncle Ben's death and being unable to concentrate in school. Pete's friend is also juggling since the end has come to his blown off appearance, making him feel unwanted and trying to live a better life. Then "Swarm" meets this new Spider-Man one night and at first it seems their relationship is light-hearted and engaging, shedding their respective demons in action. As they keep fighting crime though, "Swarm" begins to lose his mind either with Spider-Man on what he does or from the Daily Bugle to introduce it.

Introducing an old and near obscure villain might make for interesting material compared to the Spider-Man villains we have come to know. If proper actions are taken, you can introduce not only a good majority of the universe, but also older villains (Swarm as the main and the Spider-Slayers minor) to set it up and proceed onward. Then overtime, the eventual Sinister Six can be made somehow and the universe is entirely complete. Honestly, starting small with a near unknown rogue in Spidey's gallery before going into the iconic names might be the way to go. With a proper setup and dramatics, Swarm I might see being a decent villain in a Spider-Man film starting a new series.

Unfortunately, speaking as a long-time Spidey fan who is actually familiar with most of his villains, Swarm is one that even I wouldn't care to see on film. There are plenty of other villains who would be much better suited to a movie. Vulture, Chameleon, and Mysterio being among the most interesting and bankable. Truthfully, outside the iconic villains, most of the general public wouldn't know or care enough about the more obscure villains to want to see a movie based around them. Perhaps you could change it to someone like Kraven, Hammerhead, Silvermane, The Enforcers, or Scorpion and it would fare better. We still have yet to see Black Cat, Diamondback, or Silver Sable, as well, so a couple of female "villains" could be a breath of fresh air, too. In fact, if you wanted to tie it into the DD universe, the Enforcers and Silvermane would be a good way to go, since it would naturally lead into Kingpin and other Mob heavy-hitters.

Given a choice between going to bed early or writing, I will always ALWAYS write.

Added five more pages to my novel. They're pretty badass, if I may say so myself. Writing a book where literally every single character hates everyone else is incredibly entertaining and quite unlike anything I've ever done before.

Let the writing force flow through you.... I'm working on my TMNT Christmas tale. Contains a few spoilers for LIS, but at this point in the narrative, I think it's okay to give a few hints to the ending. (Or IS it the end? I've been planning a sequel, which will pick up a few months after LIS leaves off.)

Yeah, I do see the issue Duckie. Swarm's always been a villain I've liked in recent years; odds of him being a villain are almost nonexistent. Speaking of which I did think of a list I'd be all for villain wise (I'd rather Black Cat be an anti-hero though)

10. The Spider-Slayers
9. Silver Sable
8. Prowler
7. Beetle
6. Jackal
5. Mysterio/Chameleon
4. Hobgoblin
3. Scorpion
2. Kraven (my favorite Spider-Man villain)
1. Kingpin/Tombstone (if they make Tombstone like Spectacular that is)

The Vulture I'd also wish on, but rather he be established in a movie as a supporting character first. Same goes for Kraven, both would benefit from Spider-Man going into a sequel before using them mostly Kraven though. I'm not familiar with Spider-Man comics but I do know a lot of the mythos of him; might need some help knowing more on him comic wise as I do want to make a Spider-Man movie one day.

Now, for new stories I'll be interested in seeing what you and Cy have planned respectively. :) Mostly now I'm trying to improve an old story I thought of called Dare to Dream? Problem is with all my previous stories back in elementary and junior high were all of them being more video game styled; to me it really hurt everything way too much.

Dare to Dream sounds interesting... what's the basic concept? Or genre?

As long as we're discussing our own idealized CBM franchises, I always thought the ideal next Batman film series should focus on the sidekicks and their relationship to Bruce.

1. Featuring Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Black Mask, and Hugo Strange; loose adaptation of "Prey."
2. Jason Todd, Joker, Harley Quinn; adapting "Mad Love", "Killing Joke", and "A Death in the Family."
3. Tim Drake, Hush, Riddler, Jason Todd; "Hush" and "Under the Hood."
4. Stephanie Brown, Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow; "War Games."
5. Damian Wayne, Talia al Ghul, R'as al Ghul; "Son of the Demon", "Batman and Son."

Hmm, my ideal Marvel movie-verse would focus on some of the major events of the past, but in chonological order. I'd start with a FF movie featuring Doom, a Spidey- movie with either Ock or Electro (with Vulture as a side character) and an Iron Man flick with Mandarin(the REAL one). Follow that with Green Goblin and introduce Hulk in Spidey, Namor in FF, and a movie about Captain America with Hydra and Red Skull, but stays more accurate to the books, especially with Bucky. IM 2 would feature Falcon, with Stane as the villain (who's been working in the background previously, but only as a side character). Then we bring the mutants in with X-Men (the REAL "first class" with Beast, Cyc, Jean, Ice-Man, and Angel) vs. Magneto and follow with Thor against Enchantress (with Loki behind the scenes) and then do Avengers by bringing Hulk in again as a threat(he would join by the end), using Thor and the others already introduced, and have Spidey as a cameo. That would be the first round of films.

Next would jump ahead a bit, with Spidey going against Vulture and Sandman. Meanwhile, Namor would return to warn that Tiger shark and Namor's own uncle have taken over his kingdom, asking for help from the humans, namely the FF. Thor discovers Loki's involvement during a dark elf uprising, and Iron-Man adds War Machine and Black Widow to fight AIM trying to take over Tony's tech using MODOK. Then I'd have another X-Men film that intros Storm and Wolverine and has Mr. Sinister and the Mutates in the Savage Land, and CA2 bringing Cap up to date with Winter Soldier, then adding Cap, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to the Avengers to defeat a Skrull invasion (REAL Skrulls, culminating in a fight with Super Skrull). Hulk would leave the Avengers for a while, only to end up facing Abomination.

In round three, FF would introduce Silver Surfer (but leave Galactus for the big threat later), with Silver Surfer as an ally this time around, and Spidey getting Mysterio and Chameleon, Thor facing Hela and her demons, and Iron-Man would get Extremis and the Iron Legion as enemies. Cap would be a full time Avenger at this point, and Black Widow would join, along with Ant-Man(Pym) and Wasp, which would bring in Ultron. Ultron creates Vision, but Vision has Ant-Man's moral compass and turns on him. X-Men would face the Hellfire Club, and bring in Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, and Dazzler. This would start the Phoenix Saga for them, as Emma Frost and Mastermind try to subvert Jean. Beast would have turned furry at this point. We'd also get movies for Black Panther, Deadpool, and Guardians of the Galaxy, with Nova as a member in addition to the ones we saw in the last GotG film. Skrulls would play a major threat in this, using Earth in a tug-of-war with the Kree.

Then we'd go into Galactus in FF, the Phoenix Saga proper with the Shi'ar and M'kron Crystal, and Spidey finally gets the Sinister Six. Avengers would now have to face a returned Hydra AND AIM, causing SHIELD to be temporarily moved to space as SWORD, and we'd have Cap and Iron-Man beginning to disagree, while Scarlet Witch and Vision become close. This would also introduce Ms. Marvel to help defeat the insidious threat. Hulk would end up creating Leader by accident, while Thor becomes king when Odin is killed by Loki, and must also fight off Frost Giants. Also, we'd finally get Dr. Strange and Baron Mordo.

The next round would deal with Wanda's instability following a battle against Ulron again, where Vision "dies" and she goes insane and tears the team apart, only to be taken by Dr. Strange to heal her. During this, we'd get Spidey's battle against The Queen and his transformation into the Man-Spider, the FF fending off the Fearsome Five, who have cropped up as a project of AIM, and we'd get our Dark Phoenix movie. Hulk would save Jennifer, only to have her become She-Hulk, and together they would face Red Hulk. With the heroes of Earth in disarray, we'd FINALLY get our first hints of Thanos and the Infinity War, as the Infinity Stones pop up throughout the movies of this and the previous round.

The events of the previous phase would lead to the Registration Act, which would polarize the Avengers and everyone else, tearing the FF in half, Spidey would side with IM after Tony convinces him to go public, and Cap would be declared a fugitive, while the X-Men face the threat of M-Day, due to Scarlet Witch's continued instability. This would also cause Emma Frost to leave Hellfire Club and join the X-Men, consoling a grieving Scott after JEan's death as Dark Phoenix. Meanwhile, Hulk would be declared too dangerous to remain on Earth by the Illuminati (who have been meeting in secret for the past three rounds), and get sent off to start "Planet Hulk". Thanos would declare war on Earth in the midst of the chaos, thus ending the Civil War that spans the entire movie-verse and bringing everyone back together at last. The resulting Infinity War would end it all!

Whew! That was a huge post! But, to answer your post, GM, Black Cat and silver Sable would both work best as Spidey's team-up allies in a movie, much like in the comics themselves. Same goes for Prowler. He is actually a good guy, who just happened to get into a misunderstanding with Spidey in his first appearance.

As for new story ideas, I've currently got several TMNT fics in the works, including a holiday tale, my long-running "main" story LIS, and the next chapter of my Gargoyles crossover.

Finished the chapter I've been working on all weekend; a lot of angry people trapped in a briefing, blaming each other for the previous mission, and just all around being assholes.

Need to think about the next chapter before I start typing it up, as the POV shifts and it's all subterfuge and piracy. Gonna be fun.

Thanks! See, all it takes is a little tweaking to make the comics work on the big screen, and much of the larger stuff can be seeded into earlier films. The only thing I really have "out of order" in the chronology is the Infinity War, but as it's probably THE biggest event in the MU EVER, I think it works better as the endgame. And all the other stuff could just build up, so that by the time you get to Civil War, you actually HAVE all the major players introduced and in play already, and it would be a bigger and more epic event. Obviously, I'd touch on the events with the New Warriors and the Stanford Disaster as the catalyst for Civil War, along with Hulk and some of the other bits. That event though, would probably happen as background (or off-screen) during either the FF, Hulk, or Spidey film in the next-to-last phase. Possibly even mentioned in the Dark Phoenix movie, or heck, maybe it would get a brief mention in ALL of them, just because it would make them all pause for a moment in the midst of their own problems to realize they can't fix everything or be everywhere at once.

Just had an idea to tie Darkwater into my side plot with Bishop and the EPF for my LIS sequel. I was thinking it could be a secret project Bishop is working on for the government, hence why he wants to study the turtles. I could include Dirk Savage as an agent/black-ops hunter for the project, collecting mutants, aliens, and other anomalies for Bishop. Any thoughts?

Y'know if I work this right, I can tie it to the Mutanimals idea I had earlier, by having them be some of the captive mutants Bishop was experimenting on- this could include Alopex, Mondo, Tiger Claw and/or Hob, and Man-Ray. Maybe even Rockwell! I'm thinking they could have been "failed" test subjects of Shredder's playing with the mutagen, along with some of the other Archie and Nick mutants.

So I've posted RP posts of mine here before [or maybe it was just that one time, I can't remember] but I come once again bearing RP writing I've done. This time... it's a really long log shared with a friend of mine, but I'm proud of many of my posts in it.

I don't really expect anybody to go through the whole thing, since some of the context takes place in a bigger RP, but I like it enough to share, so here it is:

This log has MAJOR spoilers for Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies [mostly warning for Gold] and further on down it gets pretty violent. Uh, how do I content warn for repeated electrocutions? :V

It's so big I couldn't put it in a single post here, and I didn't want to post like five times in a row. Sucks because it's BBCode formatted and Pastebin doesn't support that, oh well.

My character is Simon Blackquill here. Yes, this is what I spend a lot of my non-Drome time doing. Check the timestamps on that ****.

So I've got the opening to my LIS sequel started, and just thought I'd get some early feedback. The working title for the story is "Family Matters", but I'm thinking of changing it to something more fitting.

Warning: This excerpt contains a few spoilers for the ending of LIS, including a surprising development regarding the OC....

Chapter 1: A New Beginning

There’s no such thing as “happily ever after”. I should know. Anyone who tells you that life is all peaches and cream once the villains have been stopped and the boy gets the girl is WRONG. It’s not. See, that’s really just the beginning. Especially when you’ve been adopted into a clan of mutant ninjas. The REAL challenge comes afterward, when you’re juggling a career as a rookie news reporter, a home life with a mate who spends most of his time as a giant turtle (and the rest starting up a career as a professional skateboarder), while moonlighting as a gang-busting vigilante. Okay, I know it’s not a nice word, but it is what it is. Oh yes, and I almost forgot to mention the part about having not one but FOUR new lives on the way.
Things were going great for the first couple of months after the boys had taken Donnie’s formula. Leo intensified their training, saying that they had to be just as good without their mutant abilities as they were WITH them, in case they needed to get out of a bad situation and couldn’t risk changing. I suppose it makes tactical sense. There were some grumbles from the others at first, mostly regarding the ungodly amount of time devoted to getting their human bodies into as close to the same fighting shape as they were while in their “true” shape. We had quickly learned that while I couldn’t hold a candle to them physically as mutants, we were on almost equal footing when it came to sparring with them as humans. In other words, they needed to learn their new limitations and advantages in the alternate form.
It was also during the first couple of months after the “Upgrade” (as Donnie jokingly put it) that I discovered the “good’ news. Mikey was, of course, ecstatic. I wasn’t so sure, given that Donatello had already discovered a few anomalies about their human form already. Such as the fact that while almost everything else changed completely, their eyes never did. In Don and Leo’s case, it wasn’t too noticeable, but with Raph, especially, it was a HUGE tip-off that something wasn’t quite normal. He still had the same almost golden amber eyes, and Mikey’s darker honey-gold ones weren’t exactly unnoticeable, either. They ended up having to wear contact lenses to hide the unusual color and iris shape. They complained about the inconvenience, but it was a small price to pay for keeping their secret.
The other thing that worried me was when Donnie discovered that they retained the mutant DNA in their, er, “man-bits” for nearly six hours after shifting to human. Basically, it meant that their seed was still that of a mutant for the first few hours, so any carnal activities during that time ran the risk of either conceiving something deformed and unviable (or even dangerous to its own mother), or of being utterly incompatible and incapable of creating any offspring at all. It would have been nice to know that BEFORE I found out I was expecting. Needless to say, Don was keeping a VERY close eye on the progress.
It wasn’t until three months after he had begun working on the formula that Don finally came up with a version that allowed for a fully controlled and long-term change. Essentially, it made it possible for someone to shift at will, and for as long as desired. That was the version that he gave to Mona Lisa, giving her the best of both worlds. However, since the boys had already taken his first attempt, it was deemed to risky to try using the new version on top of it. There was no way of knowing how the two would interact.

Wow, it turns out I've knocked out ~25 pages in one week. This has been a GOOD week. :tcool:

Those 25 pages made up two chapters, starring a woman as psychotic and murderous as she is physically attractive, a lumbering reptilian who serves as the team's WMD, a boasting lustful and competitive rogue, and a woman who can change her skin and appearance. They killed a LOT of people. :tlol:

I'm trying to develop my own TMNT universe, which while mostly influenced by IDW, also plucks from other versions as well, then trying to have some touches of my own. Mostly it's a mix of the big four. Mirage&Image/Fred Wolf/4kids/Nick. The most I have straightened out is the first few "episodes". The origin, meeting of Casey and April, MOUSERS, and TCRI.

Not even sure if I can write it down the way I want to.

In the 1990’s, Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi are high-ranking members of the Foot Clan, serving as guardians of the Utroms who have set up a colony base on Earth. To Saki’s dismay, his friend Yoshi is starting to set his heart away from the way they had been raised, toward the affection of a scientist named Tang Shen, who works alongside the Utroms in their science facility, Techno Cosmic Research Institute.
Before Shen is relocated from the Tokyo TCRI base to the one in Manhattan, Yoshi marries her and goes with her to America. Enraged by the cultural betrayal, Saki goes after Yoshi incognito and attacks him in his home.

At the time, Yoshi and Shen had four turtles, three rats, and a cat alongside their infant daughter. At the same time, Shen had brought home some ooze from her lab in hopes of examining it outside a lab environment – a study she and the other scientists knew was a costly risk.
In Saki’s attack, the ooze was spilled on the cat and one of the rats.
As the rat escaped, it climbed over Yoshi and mutated him as he rescued the turtles (at Shen’s demand while she tried to rescue the baby), who mutated in turn.

Saki left them, believing they were dead. Yoshi, mutated into a rat-like form and with four small humanoid turtle toddlers, was unable to find Shen, their daughter Miwa, or even their cat. With lost hope, he took the four turtles and looked to aid in his first American friends – the Jones family, who ran a restaurant above where a speakeasy used to be in the sewers during prohibition.

To his relief, they agreed to help him set up a hiding place in the speakeasy, where they spent the next twelve years. During that time, Yoshi took on the name Splinter to better hide himself from Saki if he ever started to believe he had not succeeded, and retained the names that Shen had given their turtles. In the absence of his daughter, he treated them as his sons, and watched them blossom into skillful martial artists and fine young boys despite their only friends being Casey Jones and his sister Angel.

Aside from their usual roles as leader, does machines, tough guy, and party dude, their traits are history buff, sci-fi dork, knitting king, and master chef wannabe.

Leonardo – Could have been an AP history student had he been in public school. He particularly favors Japanese history, and typically pries at Splinter for knowledge about traditions – especially the ones that have stuck through the ages. He is learning brush painting from Splinter, and has started to fill the lair with a little more color with his finer works. Stamping is his next goal and he dabbles in animation for fun. Mostly stick figures in the corners, with form copied from their martial arts books.

Donatello – Adding to his mechanical prowess, originally taught by Mr. Jones, then from online learning, is a sci-fi nerd, and has succeeded in hooking Leo into the cultures; views the fandom wars between Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Firefly, and so forth extremely dumb and loves them all. All of them. Even the ones that he knows are absolutely terrible. He has figured out metal working and made most of their arsenal himself. With Splinter’s aid at the beginning.

Raphael – A remarkable craftsman, surprising to everyone considering his broody personality. He can knit a king-sized blanket in a week, and hand-stitch a quilt in three. Learning to use a sewing machine from Mrs. Jones – it’s his philosophy that he’ll need it. It comes in handy if Donatello has made something that will require some kind of fabric or leather covering.

Michelangelo – Learned to cook from Mr. Jones, a professional chef; he favors making pizza because it’s the most fun, but he’ll still make other things. He is the type of cook who will smack wrists with a spatula if someone so much as dares try to snitch a slice of sausage off the tray before he’s finished cooking. Usually it’s Raphael.

(Donatello and Raphael have more bandaging on their hands and fingers than Leonardo and Michelangelo, considering that their hobbies add more cuts and callouses than normal with their training.)

April O’Neil comes into the picture when she goes to New York for college. She moves in with her maternal aunt, Irma Langstine, who is neighbors with the Jones family, and starts to make uneasy friends with the rough and tumble Casey, who disappears into the sewers frequently at night. Angel refuses to say a word about it. In time, fearing he was doing/buying/selling drugs, followed him down, only to find something completely different than what she was expecting – though she did expect the speakeasy. At the same time, Baxter Stockman, a teacher at April’s tech school (but not one of her own) has developed the MOUSERs in hopes of solving Manhattan’s rat problem. The first version track by heat and by weight. As such, they happen upon Splinter by chance rather than as a deliberate attack. However, since Oroku Saki funded the projected, it was through the MOUSERs that he realized Hamato Yoshi had not died.

In typical form, the turtles fled the sewer with Casey and April, and Splinter got lost in their dust. They eventually track him down the Manhattan TCRI, and break into the lower levels, where they discover the aliens running the place. They also meet Oroku Saki as the Shredder for the first time, who learns of their identities, as well as the identity of the enormous man-rat in stasis. In their effort to rescue Splinter and protect him from an enraged Shredder, the Manhattan TCRI is destroyed.
With their home in ruins and Splinter in a weakened state, the turtles hide in April’s apartment, where Irma meets them for the first time – to her shock and horror.

Meanwhile, Shredder has to explain to the leader of the Utroms why he allowed one of their buildings to be destroyed by mutated teenagers, risking their cover. Krang comes close to stripping Shredder of his rank as as a sole warning to his life, only to change his mind at the last moment when he learns his chief scientist Xeinos is missing. He sends Shredder to find her as quickly as possible in order to redeem himself. She is too valuable to lose.

I still need to work on the rest, but there are still other ideas past this. Somehow, I struggle to find a place for the Triceratons and Purple Dragons?

They haven't quite learned what ooze/mutagen is yet, besides that it mutated them.

And yeah, I pulled the "these characters are related card"; I don't even know where I got the idea for Irma being April's aunt...I just thought it would be a sweet concept.

Wrote the first third of Chapter 8 Sunday night. It came out great; the ship's doctor and the ship's captain all up in each other's business. Man, every time I start talking about my current novel, it just continually amazes me how much every single character hates every other character. It's the most dysfunctional cast ever. :tlol:

Also, my wife finally read the whole of what I've written of it so far, and loves it. She laughed at all the right parts, which is nice. :tlol:

Subject. Turtles getting human mutations, hooking up... nope.

I don't mind Turtles hooking up with whoever they can, as sexuality is a natural evolution of their characters once they're adults, but turning into partial humans is just a little too "fangirly" for me.

Leading by example:

“Captain, you and I need to talk,” Doctor Macintosh announced, stepping into the captain’s office to find her commanding officer staring out the porthole at the starfield beyond.
Winters didn’t turn from the porthole, her hands clasped behind her back as she stood motionless. “Well, Doctor, if we’re going to talk, please come in all the way and seal the door behind.”
Macintosh stepped over the threshold, looking around the office as the door automatically slid shut behind her. The captain’s office was austere and impersonal; there were no medals, photographs, or memorabilia adoring the walls; no objet d'art or sculptures, no model ships or award for valor; no remembrances of former crew or family.
Cold, impersonal, and distant… just like the person herself, Macintosh frowned.
“So, Doctor.” Winters still didn’t turn to face her visitor. “I do hope this isn’t another of your ill-informed human rights’ complaints… so far, you’re the only crewmember to give me any real trouble.”
“So far,” Macintosh bristled defensively, “I’m the only crewmember to give a damn about anyone else on this ship! As captain, the crew is your responsibility. Nobody trusts each other; at best they avoid or barely tolerate each other, but most of them hate each other. How in the world are we supposed to function as a team like this? You’re a captain—you’re supposed to lead by example!”
Shaking her head in disgust, Winters turned around to face her medical officer. “Doctor, leading by example is exactly what I’ve been doing. I don’t give a damn about any of you, and neither should you.”

I get ya'. It's a concept that's not for everyone, to be sure. The whole idea sprang from the OT ep with the mutagen cookies that made Mikey human (but nearly blew him up). I just sort of ran with it, and had Donatello tinker with the formula to allow them to have a (semi) normal life in the open, at least as long as the effects last. Being able to start families was sort of an incidental effect. It does have drawbacks though. The biggest is that it only lasts for up to 12 hrs at a time, but "shifting" also puts a strain on their bodies that shortens their life-span by several hours every time they do it. Might not seem like much, but it would add up over time. Strenuous activity makes it harder to keep up the disguise.

The story mostly focuses on how difficult it is for them to maintain their secret, with Bishop harrassing them and Pimiko and Kazuo out for revenge. The first one dealt with Michelangelo's desire for freedom, acceptance and love, and his and Raph's developing resentment of their lot in life- hence the reason they chose to try Don's "new and improved" formula. The "hook-ups" are almost all with OT canon character pairings. (Lotus, Mona Lisa, and Irma- the last is a sort of "surprise" that I came up with based on the interactions between them in the Turtle Snatchers and Degree eps.)

One of the things I wanted to do with this series was to show how Mikey isn't always just the jokester and slacker with the carefree attitude that he pretends to be. Had to dig a little deeper, but I really enjoyed getting into his head to find the "real" Michelangelo, as it were. His moments of bitterness, lonliness, and philospohical insight. Most of what I used for that came from the third movie, a few eps from the OT, and a couple of Mirage stories. LIS did that with his journals, and a couple of confessions he made to other characters. I hope to do something similar with the other three, especially Donnie, who usually gets the short shaft on that in most versions.

That's cool. I guess with the romance angle it probably comes off that way. The funny thing is that his wish to do so was straight out of the ep. It was "The Gang's All Here" one of my favorite Mikey eps due to the fact that it deals with his character a bit more deeply than most. That one and Michelangelo's Birthday are two of the best Mikey eps, IMHO.

I've been working on that Mirror-verse one off and on, though I've hit a small snag with the actual break-in that leads to the final battle. It's a little sticky, and I wanted to show just how brutal they are without losing the audience's sympathy. Tricky situation.

Yeah, I'm one of those TMNT fans who wants nothing to do with Fred Wolf. I grudgingly respect it, but I can't enjoy it anymore.

Based on what you've already shown with Splinter, Duckie, I don't think you have to worry about losing audience sympathy. If you want to discuss more on that, I'd be happy to offer further opinions...

Captain Winters is not "a bit of an uncaring b!tch." She is an uncaring b!tch, through and through. :twink: And there are definite reasons to her aloofness, pertaining to the mission at hand and her own backstory. She's just a sociopath leading a crew of sociopaths.

That's okay. I understand that some fans aren't as fond of that version, but I've found that goofiness aside, it still has plenty of potential to mine for ideas. The many aliens, mutants, mobsters and mad scientists and their varied schemes are great for finding fun material to play around with. It just takes a more serious approach and a little tweaking to make it work.

Thanks for the offer. Did you have any specific ideas? I left off with the cinfrontation with Lotus on a rooftop before they reached the target.

I kind of got that vibe from the scene you shared, but didn't want to assume too much based on one small scene. Sounds like a ship full of crazies. I LOVE it!

I think the mutants and Dimension X stuff are good source material to reuse (IDW!) but their generic mobsters and mad scientists are not anything I remember fondly. Other TMNT versions have done scientists (Mirage/4Kids Baxter) and mobsters (Image Volume 3 Big Tony) much better IMO.

At the moment, I haven't read it in probably a year. But if you want to send me a quick PM of what the sides are in a potential conflict and who might become casualties, I can provide a couple of suggestions or feedback.

Yeah, it's a ship full of sociopathic antisocial self-absorbed killers who hate each other but all volunteered to work together. Most fun characters I've ever written, honestly.

MsMarvelDuckie
01-13-2016, 04:11 PM
Different strokes, and all that. I actually liked some of the scientists and mobsters. Turtelli and Big Louie mostly. Professor Sofo was a fun one, and gets a mention in the first story during Don and Mike's conversation when Donnie confesses his secret. Mikey makes a joke about how the guy was actually half right when he addressed the letter to "MISS Donna Tello". And Don replies by saying he was a nut and questions whether his diploma is actually valid. Big Louie was in a scene where several men were executed by him. It's all in how you use them and making it seem like a credible threat or at least give it a respectful treatment in the story. But I like playing with weird elements and trying to make them interesting and realistic.

I'm only somewhat knowledgeable about US copyright law, but at least here, I'm pretty sure a minor could copyright something; he or she might possibly need help (someone of legal age involved), but I don't know that for sure...

Stayed up way too late last night; wrote one half of a conversation between two female characters.

They're bonding by braiding each other's hair, talking about boys, and talking about people they killed.

Okay, I lied. They're just sharing their mutual history of being slaves and how they escaped. :tlol: But it's definitely bonding.

Chapter Ten: Shadow of Death

We raced to the garage with Don’s bag in hand and hopped into the van, determined to save Michelangelo. Time was running short, and every second counted. Lexington stayed in the back, out of sight, while Donnie drove- wearing his usual trench coat and fedora, of course. We made it to the police station in record time, parking a half-block away on a shadowy side street, before taking to the rooftops and making our way to the clock tower. Broadway and Brooklyn were waiting for us when we arrived, the stone slab with the unconscious turtle on it lying on the landing of the steps leading down from the balcony. They stood aside as we rushed over to examine Mikey, who had apparently continued to bleed from the deep fissures in his shell.
“How is he?” I asked worriedly as Donatello checked his brother over after we had arrived. He was kneeling down beside the unconscious turtle, intently checking Michelangelo’s pulse. His brow creased with worry, and he began to examine the cracks in his brother’s shell carefully. Blood still oozed from the cracks, which had widened slightly during the trip, despite the gargoyles’ careful flight. His carapace resembled a jigsaw puzzle that had broken apart, only the delicate tissues beneath holding it together. Mikey’s breath sounded labored, almost raspy, and his skin looked grayish. That couldn’t be good.
“He’s not doing too good. Pulse is weak, probably some torn muscles in the abdominal walls interfering with his breathing- if we can’t repair these cracks soon, he may not make it. He’s still in shock, which isn’t a good sign. We HAVE to get that Medilaser!” He looked back up at me, even as Lex brought several rolls of gauze and medical tape over and began wiping away some of the blood from the edges of the cracks with a wet washcloth.
“So how do we get it?” Lex asked again. Don still hadn’t exactly explained what he meant earlier when he’d said I was supposed to steal the device. Meanwhile, I paced anxiously, not quite knowing what to do. Donatello had taught me some basic field triage and first aid, but Lex seemed to have already taken that job. Sighing in frustration, I grabbed another cloth, ran to the faucet in the Wyvern clan’s makeshift kitchen, and rushed back over to help Lex.
Get what?” Broadway asked; he scratched his head, wondering what they were talking about. Brooklyn tapped one clawed foot in agitation, clearly lost. Lexington began taping the pieces of Mikey’s shell together, though it was a temporary measure, at best.
“A device called a Medilaser. It’s at the Metro Hospital, and it can heal Mikey, but it’s locked in the hospital’s vault. And SHE’S going to steal it.” Don turned, pointing to me, a devilish grin on his face in spite of the dire situation his brother faced. I knew that look, and it always spelled trouble.
“Wait- you’re STEALING valuable equipment from a hospital?!” Broadway exclaimed, his jaw dropping.
“Don’t worry! We’ll take it back- AFTER we’ve used it to save Mikey.” Donnie seemed oblivious to the fact that the others were all shocked by his announcement. Ninjas, I thought sourly, rolling my eyes as I dabbed at the edges of one of the jagged fractures.
Brooklyn seemed doubtful, however. “I’m starting to wonder which side of the law you guys are really on,” he commented darkly. He stared hard at the turtle, but Don simply ignored his gaze as if unconcerned. After a few minutes, Brooklyn turned away, tugging Broadway’s arm as he headed up the steps toward the balcony door. “Come on, Broadway- Goliath and the others still need our help to find the Pack. We’d best go catch up with them. You coming, Lex?” He tossed a glance toward Lex, who hesitated, apparently considering following the pair, but then he shook his head and indicated the prone mutant whose wounds he was tending.
“I think I can be of more use helping him right now. As much as I’d love to get some paybacks for what the Pack did to our friend, his life is more important. YOU taught me that, Brooklyn.” The red-skinned gargoyle paused at the threshold, and a look passed between them. There was something there, I was sure of it, but what it was, I couldn’t determine. I’d have to remember to ask Lex about it later.

So, I have the rough outlines for a character I'm working on.
He's someone in his early 20's from London (or maybe just England, but London seems like a really nice place for his story). He's intelligent, but mentally unstable. He sports a red armour he put together himself and also uses weapons.
I have a few questions for you guys, because I haven't written actual stories in English and those sucked, and I'm pretty nervous because I think I'll still suck.
What weapons do you think he should use? It needs to be realistic for him to be able to take care of himself without being arrested or killed or anything.
What material should the armour be made of? (It needs to protect him from bullets and it's red. He also wears a helmet).
I was going with long shoulder-length black hair in a pony-tail while in costume and green eyes. But maybe brown eyes look better. Thoughts?
I do realize I'm asking a whole lot that's not even writer-related. But I really don't know who to ask and Cylon told me he'd beat me up if I kept spamming his inbox.

I believe my words were "Stop asking me to write your own character before I dip you in marmalade and throw you to the koalas."

Seriously, though, if you're looking for general advice/feedback, it's probably better to consult more than one person. Otherwise, you're going to end up with all your feedback coming from one place and me shaping more of your character than is fair or I would want.

When I send out my novels for beta reading, I always send it to at least 3 people (usually 6 or 7, but 3 reliably end up doing the bulk of the work), so that I can solicit a range of opinions and feedback. Look for the common concerns and questions, and also always scrutinize it yourself.

Am, speaking of advice, you could try looking online for writers forums and writing articles. As a matter of fact, this ties in nicely with an issue I wanted to bring up here. On another site I frequent as a member, there is a monthly writing competition in the writers section of the forum. (It's primarily a comics, sports and movies fan-site. But it was started by former members of the Marvel boards, many of whom are also fic-writers.) They are currently seeking new members to participate in the monthly competition. So anyone interested in participating PM me for details, and I'll fill you in on the particulars. The contest for this month is just starting, so there will be plenty of time to get something in.

At the end of the day, though it's YOUR character. Think of how you want them to look, act, dress, and sound. Yes, even their voice can help define them. No one else will understand who this character is better than you will. To write any character well, you have to be able to make them come alive on the page. Otherwise, they will just be boring and flat.

Just started reading a couple of books I ordered on Amazon for writing- one is "Hot Sex- Tips For Writing Steamy Sex Scenes"; already read all of that one. It was an interesting and fun little series of how-to esseys on erotica, romance, do's and don'ts and spicing things up in romance/erotic scenes. Nothing incredibly enlightening, but seems to have some good advice.

The other is a much deeper read from what I've seen so far. The book is called "Violence: A Writer's Guide", and it's basically about how to create realistic violence and fight scenes. Goes in depth into some of the finer points like psychology of a fight, what happens during a confrontation in real world situations, weapon types and use, and even consequences. It deals with myths and injuries, legality, unarmed vs armed, and even reasons for using violence all from a real world perspective. Very informative so far.

I picked these up because I want to ramp up my writing and try to get outside my comfort zone as a writer, as well as to find ways to improve and make it more exciting and real. I've reached a level where I feel I've gotten pretty good, but there's still plenty to learn and ways to grow. I have a few other books sitting in my to-buy list, mostly on things like forensics, crime, a few cultural studies, and sci-fi elements.

Cylon does anyone beta read or proof read your work after you write it?

Absolutely.

The first review my writing goes through is my own self-review; I wait at least a month after finishing the project so that my intimate familiarity with it can fade, then I print it out and read it through start to finish with a big ol' red pen. I correct everything I find myself and rewrite any/all of the stuff that needs improvement/fixing, then I send it out to others.

My wife reads most everything I write; on my current project, I've been sending her the chapters pretty much as I finish them and then incorporating what feedback and criticism she provides.

I have a few reliable friends who I can count on to tell me "this character is unbelievable" or "this scene is flat", who read and provided in-depth comprehensive feedback of my last novel. I am totally going to use them again for this current project. (I also review and critique their own work.)

I also have a group of peers that I met online, practically none of whom knew each other personally and yet we've all become super close friends. We review each other's stuff and just talk shop; the group is the single only reason I still have a Facebook account.

So when its time for it to be published by that online publishing company you showed me a couple months back, does anyone from that company proofread any material you send them, or do they immediately publish/print whatever you send to them?

There's always the possibility of the occasional grammar error or spelling mistake that slips by everyone, so does this get checked by the publishing company or do they just print what you give them?

No, publishing websites like the one I use don't proofread or edit your work unless you pay them. Their free services simply print/bind what you give them.

And honestly, I've read a lot of high-end mainstream novels with facepalmingly bad typos. I think it all comes down to the more eyes on a page, the higher likelihood of 100% perfect writing. It always bugs me on those rare occasions I find a typo or something that slipped through and made it into print... :tgrumble:

In the TMNT fan fiction department, I am just coming to decide if I should write something on my primary Utrom character, Temre; Krang's mother and predecessor as General. It was inspired by Mr. Curnow's comment that he didn't know where Krang's mother was, but considered that she might be alive somewhere in Dimension X.

It would be about Temre and her personal team being Missing in Action during the D’Hoonib war, and trying to make their way home to Utrominon - only to be faced with a new ruler of the universe in the place of the Utroms: The Triceraton Empire. A bit of Homer's Odyssey with more despair and less extra-marital affairs. I'm not sure how long it would be, nor how much will be in the middle, but I have ideas for the beginning and end.

Long before he suspects conspiracy, he is instead trying to determine why there is nothing of Utroms in Utrominion's fossil record. The more he tries to research, the more dead ends he finds. Then he starts getting suspicious.

At first, I thought the power was out; the rooms were not shining brightly and instead were consumed by darkness. For some reason though, there's an eerie sense of unfamiliarity. There’s water dripping from the roof cracks in addition to the noise of clamping boots, almost as if the military is storming the area.

Before I could investigate if there’s a hole causing the leak, I collided into a cold piece of metal, something not part of my house. I distinctly remember not installing a fence at home; even then, my neighborhood lacks theft. Once a month, the neighbors even get together for a party; the noise reminds me of a more entertaining time from my memories. Here though, the area is a madhouse unable to interact and instead make noise like teens at a concert. Even if the rain causes a cold shiver, I’d rather hear it instead of these howls. Only thing I question though is where I am; not withstanding the yelling, the place doesn’t seem like prison or anything I’m aware of.

Footsteps continue to approach my vicinity; though I'm alone I can't understand what could've entered earlier. Closer and closer, the sound becomes a rhythm; even then, the darkened corridors prevent knowing if I’m an animal taken out for a walk or something else entirely.

"Excuse me, whoever's out there, can you tell me where I am?" I call out like an echo in a cave. My call out was moot as the only response I got was an odd gurgling sound. Did I land into another home accidentally, taking a wrong turn after fainting drunkenly?

"Sorry for interrupting, but you didn't answer my question. Where am..."

"You there in the cage, shut yer trap!" a scratchy voice responded, "what d'you think this is, first class flight?"

For the first time since waking up, I'm left dumbfounded. A scoundrel who has no business decides to butt in like a tattletale! My hands begin to grow into fists, face swelling to a pinkish glow before becoming beet red. Soon enough, I became just as annoyed as the other voices.

"Listen here, I don't mean no harm but stay out of this" I begin to say, "I just want..."

“I said shut up!” the voice interrupting with applause, “Just because you’re the new attraction doesn’t mean you get more attention than us. Get in line and learn some respect.”

Ultimately, I'm left to wonder on being an attraction for 'crazy town.' The location is less of isolation and more of what I could be used as. A lab experiment? Personal entertainment? A low point of my existence is what I am at, only thing I can do is swallow my dignity and man up. Grumbling like a child who is grounded, I sit in my cell's corner awaiting my fate.

I finally got back to writing after a bit of a dry spell. Got a little over four pages done- three on my Quantum Leap/TMNT crossover Matter of Time, and a page and a half on LIS.

So it turns out my latest novel has a new fan who somehow stumbled across my stuff on Facebook. Been dialoguing with the person, took a look at their page...

Oh my. That person looks like they have some serious issues. Like, enough to make people on here look like well-adjusted members of society. :tconfuse:

Even me? I dunno about that.

Well, as much as we'd like to think that we are... :tlol:

Wrote my first lemon fanfic a couple of weeks ago. I didn't like the way it ended up.

Of course, it has become my most viewed story on A03

Nice! Well, the voting period is about half over so I'n keeping my fingers crossed. Meanwhile, I've been hard at work on the latest chapter of LIS, and it's going to be absolutely HUGE! Lot going on from fighting and drama to classic sci-fi horror.

Did a Ever After High vs DC super hero girls ficlet. It's Darling Charming vs Cheetah. Issue is after I wrote it, I realized, I don't know how fast Cheetah is...

The story itself is based on Kamen Rider Decade's Time Manipulation vs speed of Sound.

I figure that normal DC comics Cheetah is extremely fast while her Superhero girls counter part is much weaker...so I don't know if I over powerred her or under powered her

here is the story itself, read see if it works.

So I guess I'm the only original content contributor in this thread? :tlol:

Page 322 and going strong, hoping to knock out a couple more chapters this weekend.

On course to finish by Christmas.

Not so! While I mostly wrire fan-fics I do also have a few original stories that I work on frim time to time. One is a fantasy series based in my own rpg game world. The other is a romance trilogy about a vampire clan and their various loves.

I haven't heard you talk much about those. Interesting!

The fantasy stories are "technically" based on the D&D game rules and use races creatures and magic system used in the game. The world itself and all characters, and kingdoms, etc. are all my own. The main protagonists include a pair of half-dragon elven twins, a dark elf bard and "battledancer", a noblewoman who moonlights as a burgler guided by the cat goddess, and a young knight and a half-elven song mage.

I plan on getting my own original content, but I need to practice writing. Hence the fanfiction.

I plan
A series of light vs darkness in the style of magical girl

As well a series that would be kamen rider kiva with monster harem

Which part? The dark elf and half-dragon twins are in one storyline, the cat-burgler has her own short story, and the knight and song mage are part of a third adventure. Night of the Black Cat is in my siggy link, along with the other two tales- Children of the Golden Flame is the one with the dragon-elves and bard (who also is the main character of a prequel tale- Darksong- warning, it is VERY dark and mature!), and the other pair are in The Sword and the Rod. El Gato Negro is a loose mix of Marvel's Black Cat and Zorro- with a twist. She has a pair of cats she has trained to help her steal. And she receives visions from the cat goddess whom she follows.

I can't say I'm familiar with any of those references... got any Wikipedia links for me to educate myself with? :tsmile:

All sounds pretty interesting. Devout Catwoman... what are half-dragon elves?
