I have feared death for a long time. I don't want it to come early, but I may never know.

Have you guys ever feared death? Discuss below.

Of course I have. Who isn't afraid of death? Pretty much every person on earth is afraid of dying. Even suicidal people take a lot of time to come to a decision. Dying is irreversible. Not to mention not having any idea what happens after we die scares most of us.

Now, do I think about death often? Not so much, since that'd be pretty depressing.

I don't think I fear the ultimate result of death anymore. I think I fear the process of death- that it might be painful or unpleasant or happen in a frightening manner- but I don't fear the ultimate result. If there's a heaven, than it's guaranteed to be better than here. If there's hell, it can't be much worse than the places my own head takes me. And if neither of these exist, than it's just like a dreamless sleep, and I really love to sleep.

That's...not true at all. I don't WANT to die, but I'm not afraid of it. Heaven's gonna be awesome for me.

But yeah, it's whatevs. I've come to terms with the fact I'm probably dying young.

YOLOOOOOOOOOOO.

"Don't get me wrong, it's not that we're afraid. Far from it. It's just that we have this thing about Death. It's just not us!" (Barf, in Spaceballs)

This is about how I feel, TBH. I'm not afraid of it, I just don't really want to go anytime soon. I've got too much to do!

I think the 'how' is the scarier part. We're too inclined to let people suffer, I wish humanity treated each other with the same mercy we're willing to show to pets and other creatures because we don't want them to suffer.

The fact of the matter that it happens isn't really scary, per se, just sad when considering the lives of family and friends and interests I'd have to stop being a part of.

Tell you what, should these Turtles hopefully outlive us and carry on without us... if there would turn out to be such thing as ghosts and TMNT have any movies after I'm gone, my invisible ass will be in that theater. :tlol: An [after]lifelong free theater pass could be a plus.

Do I fear death? Somewhat. Should I fear death? No.
It is within human nature to be afraid to have our lives end all of the sudden. However, death can also be a kind release to those that are suffering and feel it is their time to leave. *See deteriorating health conditions.* In the end, death is neither friend nor foe; it just is.

No, I don't fear death. It's inevitable, it's going to happen to everyone.

I fear not living a satisfying life more.

Also, as Indigo said, the "how" of death presents some problems. I'd rather it not be slow, undignified and lingering. I'd also rather not be stuck here as a ghost, or have to deal with any kind of afterlife, if I can possibly avoid it. Getting through one life is enough of an ordeal.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Also, shark blade, I wouldn't post things like that if I were you.

I fear losing loved ones a lot more than losing my own life. That being said, I would gladly take a bullet or any other type of mortal wound for somebody I care about. Heck, a while back I imagined what it'd be like to heroically risk my life to save the world from an alien invasion, ala Tony Stark at the end of Avengers.

Of course I have. Lately, I'm like: I don't want to die. Right? I still have a whole bunch I haven't done. What terrifies me is whatever is going to kill me. If it's physical like a car accident, I'm scared of the impending part of death. Like sometimes I think about what goes on through someone's head right before they know they're about to die of something horrific. I doubt their life flashes before their eyes. In nightmares before I think I'm gonna die, I always just feel icy with shock. I can't think other than holy **** this is terrifying. And then it passes and I'm okay. Maybe that's how death will be too. Hopefully just a fleeting emotion of terror and then calmness. :3

I'm more afraid of how I'll die than anything else. If I could choose, I'd choose to die peacefully in my sleep of old age, but that's usually not how it works. But I agree with Jeff that I'd gladly take a bullet for someone if I had to.

Psssh. You're brave. I never wanna die of old age. My grandma is 84 and getting around just looks so painful and she could barely do anything on her own.

I've thought about it a lot and really mulled it over in my mind for years. At some point I came to realize that the crippling fear I get from the thought of death isn't actually about me dying, it's that my mind can't handle the thought of eternity. Eternity is f*cking insane and terrifying on so many levels.

senpai
04-23-2015, 12:11 AM
Peanut, do you mean eternity in the afterlife? Or eternity of nothingness? Or eternity of reincarnation?

Slade
04-23-2015, 12:13 AM
I'd say eternity in general.

A human mind can't grasp that concept. Or isn't supposed to I think

Peanut
04-23-2015, 12:15 AM
Completely divorced from my consciousness, humanity, religion, space and science. The entire concept of eternity itself. It's the kind of mind-warping stuff I've always imagined the characters in HP Lovecraft stories learn the reality of as they're driven insane by whatever unknown horror they've faced.

I'd say eternity in general.

A human mind can't grasp that concept. Or isn't supposed to I think

You got it.

Its the same way the universe existed before we were born. The universe is said to be 13.7 billion years old. Just the mere thought that at least 13.7 billion years went by before you came into existence is insane.

Thinking about death is like thinking before you were born, everything that happened on Earth for millions of years before you even existed. Its like we KNOW all that stuff happened because of history and ancestory and stuff, but its hard to fathom how existence happened for billions of years before we came to be, and how it'll go on billions of years after we're gone.

Honestly, I'm halfway burned out with Don't Fear The Reaper due to our *then* former rock station overplaying the song. Watching Halloween 1 is one of those rare occasions I sorta enjoy that B.O.C. song.

I'd prefer to be able to have at least as many years, but agree on the old age part, was similar for my grandmother in her later years. I'm more similar to her physically, so yeah... :ohwell: Hope I don't have her health issues.

All really depends on the person though. Where I used to work at a large store, one of my co-workers was around 85... Wasn't all that quick on her feet, but lived alone, still mowed her own lawn, etc. Tough, sassy old girl, wish I could still be doing that well at her age.

Keep in mind that when we're all old medical science will probably be so far improved 50 years from now that we may all live past 100.

I fear the 'how' part. Though, I'd accept it, if it's my time to go, I'll gladly welcome it. Don't be afraid of death. I've been close to it. More I'd rather not say. But let me tell you that when your time comes, embrace it.

That's pretty much what I meant with everyone fearing death to some degree.

I hope I won't die slowly due to some terminal disease like cancer.

As for what happens after... I personally believe death is like an eternal sleep where you don't dream. Sounds boring.

Yes. I know I'll die and such but I enjoy living too much to want to die any time soon. I'm not at that point yet where I can accept it. I may never be, but It's not a paralyzing fear, more like I want to survive so screw death sorta deal. I also fear the afterwards, will I cease to exist, will my soul wander, will I enter Nirvana, will I be damned forever? Who knows, may as well try and be a decent person while I'm alive.

What I fear about death is how I die. I just hope it's peacefully.

What scares me most is drowning, beheadings, the death penalty, car accidents and many more.

Having looked death in the face once, I can say it's not a pleasant prospect.

But I'm not afraid anymore. I just don't want to leave my loved ones. Besides, I still need at least a decade to finish writing all of my currently planned novels.
