In the wake of the devastating crime wave that threatened their home, the residents of New York City begin to celebrate the heroic accomplishments of a mysterious new mutant, who seems to be committed to helping those in need.
I'll leave this open since I know some people can get the episode at midnight. :)

Why would you think one of the mods would speak about an illegal stream? Are you nuts?

I have to wait for "watch free cartoons online" or the Dutch release... I don't like them talking Dutch. I love OV much better.
Plus a DVD has three episodes and it's 9.99€
I can't wait, that's the only problem if you don't live in the states.
Or I'm missing out.

With both Muckman and Joe Eyeball making their debuts and Bebop and Rocksteady getting another appearance so soon, this seems like a fun episode. I'm only wondering about what developments we're going to get outside Muckman being a central focus. Also, no on seeing it at midnight.
Also, episode will be airing in about 2 and 1/2 hours.

Not a great, stellar, "Much Wow" episode, but more of a filler. Good to see B and R back on the scene and more of their discontent of being Shredder's henchiest of the henchmen. Overall, Muckman may be a staple on the show, but if Creep ever comes back up on the show, I want to see them face off.

It seems like April is hinting at becoming a reporter the way she was reading the newspaper and outsmarting the on-air anchor, with that freeze frame at the very end another possible hint of her future. Splinter continues to be a strong Sensei even if he felt a bit too tight with protecting the Turtles. I haven't watched the OT episode of Muckman, but given the former was produced in one of the show's weakest seasons, this episode was fairly good, but I wasn't too impressed with some of the battle scenes, though the backstory involving Bebop/Rocksteady and turning back shows that it was one of the funnier episodes with all the jokes much like a mid-OT episode, and its good to see them not being bumbling idiots. Next week does look interesting with Dark Raph and I'm definitely looking more forward to it.

Muckman's origin was also practically identical to the original cartoon. In the OT Bebop/Rocksteady pour mutagen out of a window while looking for a chemical for Krang, and the garbageman just so happen to be standing underneath it.
Even Muckman's powers draining the Turtles was the same.

Seemed like he could only control garbage, not wind powers. He only levitated garbage pails and garbage on the floor.
But thing like the Turtle's masks still moved and there seemed to be gusts of wind.
And if the power really was "move garbage" then that's really bizarre. "Garbage" is a subjective term that can mean anything between old food, empty tin cans and broken electronics, objects that have nothing in common other than the fact that people have discarded them.

Muckman and Joe Eyeball were great.
I loved Joe Eyeball's voice, I thought it was hilarious. He sounded like the Pillsbury Dough Boy at one point when Muckman poked him in the belly.
Loved how much of a challenge Bebop and Rocksteady are to the turtles.

This was an okay episode. I think I would have found it really good if it wasn't for Muckman being so plain gross. IMO, he beats out Mutagen Man for the grossest mutant on the show. I'll be really happy if he never returns.
And how can mutagen make an eyeball sentient and give Muckman the power of garbage-telekinesis or whatever the heck that was?
The humor was really good in this episode, though. Loved when they were driving their bright van and smashing into cars while saying, "Not everyone can be as stealthy as us."
And then Donnie came back to lock it.
I'm expecting a big reaction from Black Nerd, seeing as Bebop used his catch phrase - "I'm Outie, 5,000." Do you think it was an intentional reference to Black Nerd or just a coincidence?
Splinter through his cane straight through the TV screen. I bet he really hates Crognard the Barbarian!

Fun episode, been a while since we've seen the Turtles as kids in trouble (too many hiatuses are making them rusty! :trazz:) and love April's reaction at the end. :tlol:
Poor Muckman, the days of being random nameless character #42 are over. Odd idea, but kinda like how his own eye basically turned into Jiminy Cricket. lol
He seemed like he already knew of the Turtles though? I don't recall him catching a glimpse of them before, but maybe it was off camera.

He also said, "Dawg," "Oh snap" and "Son" as well. Bebop was whipping out all the slang this ep.
The entire episode is similar to the original cartoon too.Exactly, his name was Garson Grunge, he blamed the Turtle for his mutation, and teamed up with Bebop and Rocksteady after thinking the Turtles mutated them, before joining forces with the Turtles themselves.
His design is also similar to his original action figure, which also describes him as a former sewer worker.

I was surprised she didn't already go home after she helped the Turtles sneak out. That's just being a glutton for punishment right there. :tlol: Splinter may not be her father so he can't ground her, but wouldn't be surprised if she was, and should be, ordered to go home. (And the Turtles allowed to call her when they are done being grounded. lol)

I couldn't care less about Muckman and Joe Eyeball.
For me it was just nice to have a bit more of Splinter the Sassmaster and a reminder of the 'teenage' in TMNT.
Did the turtles ever get grounded in other series?
I like how they all piled into Mikey's room and were chilling together like brothers. That's more of the stuff that I would like to see.
As important as it is, storywise, to have other characters, I do wish that we'd get more moments where it's just the four of them hanging out. It might not make for explosive viewing, but a bit of background chilling would be cool.

I doubt it, (he probably sent her home and said she can't come back for a few days) it was one of those things people will think, 'is he going to hit her too' but obviously he can't because he can't hit another person's child as a punishment (but he can when he's training her).
I was surprised she was still allowed to hang with turtles as they were grounded but I am assuming she was having a training lesson at the time.

Thought this was a really good / fun episode.
Joe was a bit odd and sounded like Micky Mouse.
And Muckmans voice reminded me of the Glob Father from the Red Sky seasons of the old toon.
The only thing that struck me as odd was Muckmans comment about Pulverizer.
You'd think there would have been like missing persons reports or signs on a telephone pole or two if people knew who he was and he's been gone all of this time.
It was nice that the doofus got a mention though.
I hope that means that we will be back to him at some point.

It was a pretty great episode. Muckman has to be the nastiest looking mutant to date with his exposed, severed spinal cord, intestines and all. I caught a glimpse of him in the previews, but the final reveal was still head-(and stomach-) turning.
High point of it all for me was ninja parking, followed by Mikey's "Are you gonna eat that?" and Bebop and Rocksteady's highly conspicuous van.

Pretty good episode. Loved Splinter being the tough parent and letting the Turtles know who's boss. It was great to see that. Also loved the news reports and the artists with the Turtles' masks on them was hilarious. Yep, we're getting glimpses of April wanting to be a reporter which is cool. I liked Joe Eyeball and thought he was hilarious. Fight scenes were good, too. As for April, I know Splinter probably wouldn't hit her, but he probably sent her home and told her not to come back unless it's for a training session. Overall, a pretty good episode. I hope we see Muckman again as I really do like him. Can't wait for next week for sure!

I can't believe they recreated the first fight scene from Toxic Avenger, even the lighting fast testicle punching! Talk about paying homage! Whoa. Grant Moniger did a KILLER job with the voice of Muckman, his performance was really, really good. There were a lot of nods in this episode, both to TMNT content of yore & general pop culture, paired with the influence of the original appearance of Muckman, it was full of things to look for. Really dope. I like the changes made to the character a lot, too, that he's a public hero, that Joe is a sentient eyeball/"higher self", the sack of vomit, hahaha, all that. Bebop's personality is really growing on me now. Love it when Splinter gets pissed. Interesting to have the turtles brush up with being exposed.

Okay but what made this work this time? The creep episode and big trouble little china episode were loaded with references up the wazoo and I remembered people being piss because of that.
So much of this episode was different and I need to know why, because before there something missing that gave this show quality. The episode before was okay but this episode was made with care.
The difference is this- It came off like Ho Chan & The Creep were created solely to pay homage to the characters were they based on, whereas this time, they took a character (Muckman) who already was very similar to a cult film icon (The Toxic Avenger), & used them as a venue for showing respect to past media. It's like how Rat King is sort of a parody of Re-Animator, or how Baxter Stockman's mutation is a nod to The Fly.

Muckman was always a favorite character to me and this episode was awesome, I really enjoyed it. Loved the Toxic Avenger references and the fact that Joe Eyeball was his actual eye that talked was cool. I would love for him to be a regular character on the show. I'm really loving Bebop and Rocksteady they are such a great team. The shout out to Timothy was pretty cool too, hope to see him back soon. Next weeks episode looks to be another good one with the mutanimals!

No sweat. Though I realized after I posted that, that you might have been asking your question with the original Muckman episode in mind (What makes these references good rather than annoying?). My answer to that would have been that they were nearly scene for scene recreations + plot points, which show the writer/team watched the original before approaching a reboot. Shows they've done their research & have a love/respect for what came before. All nods are cool in their own way, but doing this sort of thing rather than throwing in random quotes or visual easter eggs is a change of pace in the homage department, which would be a reason why fans aren't griping that the OT is once again getting a tip of the hat. :tgrin:

I don't think so but still if this episode was the same beat per beat then all of the respect should really go to FW. The nick team simple update it and redesign in their style but if it's really the same episode then it should have suck.
So is it better to build a story around it rather then just throwing it in for reference sakes?

It's not the same episode beat by beat, it's just that there are portions of it that parallel it.
What comes from the original:
-Bebop & Rocksteady are sent to a lab to retrieve a chemical. There's a garbage man outside who gets oozed & becomes one with the trash.
-Muckman thinks it's the turtles fault & tries to beat them up.
-Because his mutation includes an added chemical, the turtles are weakened by him.
All the rest was new, as far as I can recall, but even the stuff that was 'lifted' was done differently. Bebop & Rocksteady intentionally poured the ooze out the window in the first one, because they were sick of Krang making other mutants & not giving them their fair due, rather than chucking it at Mikey as a weapon. Muckman thinks the turtles mutated him because he was mislead by a news report which stated the turtles were at the scene of a lab robbery, where his mutation took place. He had no idea who Bebop & Rocksteady were or that they were there & the ones to cause it. Rather than having a sac full of nuclear puke that repelled the turtles, his entire body radiated some sort of energy that physically weakened the turtles. They couldn't even walk up to the guy.
There was no hero gimmick, I don't believe he teamed up with the baddies, April & Irma were directly involved, the turtles brought he & Joe to the lair to help them out, etc. A lot of stuff was changed. & Joe Eyeball used to be a regular walking creature with numerous eyes, & he had a crush on Irma, who had to use her charm to best him.
What came from Toxic Avenger was the fight scene with the Purple Dragons, the episode's title, & just tying it into the whole goopy monster vigilante thing. Not too much.

Okay that makes more sense.
I guess it's better to borrow/work around some story ideas and combine them together rather then just visual nods and straight referencing from just one direct source. More episodes should be written like this one.

Now I don't remember much of Muckman from the OT, so I don't know if he had the creepy talking eyeball--that was too weird for me. The episode had some funny moments I appreciated, for sure; but, it really just felt like a filler. On the other hand, I understand the episode required a lot of focus for Muckman since his character was being introduced and all that. I also felt like Muckman's fame to heroism was a bit abrupt. I had a hard time believing the public took to him so quickly as he is quite horrifying. Now, I get I'm watching TMNT lol but the show still manages to promote the whole suspension of disbelief (at least to me it does), but in this episode I didn't get that. Here's why. I wasn't convinced that the world could be so easily persuaded by Muckman in the end when he says the turtles weren't real and that they were probably just kids in costume. I mean, the turtles were in the action when reporters spotted them. And, I'm sure everyone by now are at least somewhat exposed to mutants considering a few clashes and the whole Kraang invasion thing. Shouldn't the people be suspicious? Idk...that's just me though.

Because he was only in 1 episode of the OT. Joe Eyeball was actually a second garbageman that got mutated the same time Muckman did in the original cartoon. The second guy got mutated into a short green thing with two huge eyes, and he used to cling to Muckman's back.

That people questioning his testimony could be dealt in future episodes. I guess I would have agree that Muckman's fame is unbelievable and doesn't make sense but that is the only mark against this episode or least for me.

One of the recent episodes had Leo shoving a couple people out of the way of something. (Don't recall said something at the moment... maybe it was the Kraang still.) They freaked and ran away and he yelled after them something to the effect of it's not like he/they saved them or anything. So that's at least a couple people in recent direct contact.

I enjoyed this episode and liked Muckmans design very much. I just thought it was weird that he had telekinesis with garbage. I mean why only that (I know he's made of garbage) and how did he get that power anyway? Was there something special about that specific mutagen that I missed?
Also Splinter was way too hard on them this time. It's the first time I kinda disliked him. They weren't totally exposed. More like a glimpse Bigfoot style.
There's no way the news report could even guess their names. The picture of the artists wearing masks before they turned it off. That joke made no sense.

The ironic guessing of their names was just for comedy. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I didn't mind that. Though you brought up Splinter being harder on them than usual, and that seemed out of place to me too. There was a lot in this episode that just didn't fit for me.

I think Splinter was being more harsh (or o.o.c) for a reason, he's under a lot of stress, Karai has problems, he knows about the mind control serum. He's just having his fears.

Anyway ya Splinter was ridiculous in this. I've always found it off-putting that he so easily hits the turtles in this series. I know it's for comic relief but just feels wrong imo since they're his sons. Besides training, and even then, he really let's them have it.

I'm chalking it up as magic at this point. It's just pointless to base on scientific logic. Without the magic of mutagen, Muckman shouldn't be saying "I'm a freak!" but more like "Kill me. Please kill me." That man shouldn't even be alive.

Muckman looks great, sounds great, and has really cool powers. The eyeball sidekick was much better done than the OT version. I thought it worked very well.
Clearly lots of Troma love going on here... the first Muckman fight REALLY reminded me of some of those Toxic Avenger fights. Classic.
The dialog and jokes were really on point in this episode. Bebop was really shining this time in particular. With the Audi 5000 Black Nerd reference being a highlight. About time Andre a shout out.
LOVED the van parking scene and Donny running back to click the remote lock. So funny :) Those are the kind of quick jokes that I really appreciate them working into episodes. It's only a couple seconds but it makes a big difference.
As far as "new mutant origin" episodes go I think this is one of the best ones they have ever done.
I really feel that episodes like this with their gross, strange overtones will be among the highlights of the series that people will look back on and remember as being an important part of what defined the overall flavor of the show's legacy. It feels apart from some past animated versions and I really like that about it, because it dares to reach into some of these things that previous shows had no interest in exploring like this. It does not feel as 'safe' as it could be and it is to be commended.
You can almost imagine a parent walking in on their kid watching parts of this episode and going "Eww this is really weird and gross!" and the kid would just smile and say "I know right, isn't it awesome!"
8.5 out of 10!
Muckman and Mutagen Man team-up coming someday? I can see it!
Bebop and Rocksteady didn't pour out the ooze because they were sick of Krang making mutants. They did it because they though their time was being wasted and they wanted to wreck the place. Muckman did know who Bebop & Rocksteady were when he teamed up with them and Shredder. He also know they caused his mutation when April showed him the security footage. Why there was no hero gimmick, Muckman did refer to himself and Joe Eyeball as mutant heroes at the end.

I liked the episode, Splinter acting more like a parent, Mikey trying to watch that show, April helping the turtles escape Splinter.
The way Muckman's breath weapon interacts with mutants and the krang chemical males me wonder if it will be a cure for the mind control serum or at least muckman will be immune.
I really enjoyed this episode. It's a bit difficult to explain but I liked how the turtles were written in this one. With an emphasis on them being teenagers, with them being grounded, hanging out together in Mikey's room, trying to sneak out (that scene was hilarious), their existence being known to the outside world, them being understanding toward Muckman, etc. I just really liked their portrayal here.
Muckman was a great and interesting character, not just a mutant of the week but one that caught my interest quick and made me feel sorry for him. Eyeball Joe was a fun addition, and Muckman has some interesting powers, definitely gave the turtles a challenge. Him covering for the turtles was a nice way to end the episode as well.
I like how Rocksteady and Bebop remain a threat. The turtles can never drop their guard with them around.
I really liked the "you're grounded" thing that was going on with Splinter. The turtles trying to sneak out, Mikey wanting to watch TV, April trying to cover for them and Splinter's "hmmm" were all funny scenes.
I liked the humor in this episode. Cleverly written, natural and not over the top. (You're going to eat that? Not everyone can be ninjas like us.)
One thing I also noticed was the animation. It really keeps getting better and better. It was fluid, lots of attention to small details, and especially the expressions/body movements seemed better than ever.
It's probably just me, but I felt the turtles looked especially adorable in this episode. As if their designs have been slightly changed/improved.
In any case, I really liked this one.

In Return to NYC, Leo saved the blonde man and woman from being mutated, but they assumed he was attacking them and ran away.
I guess it doesn't make sense for Muckman to not have the same reaction but my only explanation is that they had nothing but negative experiences from dealing non humans like the kraang and since that they were probably starving by lack of food in the city and living in a constant state of fear, they couldn't think rationally at the time.
I know it's a hand wave excuse to make up a non sensical plot hole but it's the only thing that I could think of.

I thought this episode was reasonably good aside from the A plot being an almost beat for beat remake of the "Muck Messes Up" episode of the OT.
This is the second time the Turtles have been grounded in show. The last time they were grounded and left the lair was when they first encountered Baxter Stockman. And I did feel Splinter was justified in punishing them this time around because their exposure to the media while not intentional was still dangerous. Because if people knew of their existence then people would hunt them down for various reasons. After all Joan Grody only called the Turtles "Baby Eaters" because she didn't know anything about them other then they were human sized mutant turtles carrying ninja weapons. So she was saying what she felt would get the public attention.
While in the Turtles defense they did need to go out and work things out with Muckman so he knew that they weren't the bad guys. And he covered their exposure by saying they didn't exist. They were just a bunch of kids in costumes like the Pulverizer.
Still I feel this accidental exposure will be foreshadowing the Turtles being exposed to the media in a situation they can't easily cover up.

Very good episode, nice to see more 80s characters being introduced.
Mikey dodging the mutagen by sucking his head inside his shell was kinda cute. :)
Bebop saying "Audi 5000!"
Love Muckman's design, surprisingly gruesome for Nick.
Joe Eyeball sounds like Mickey Mouse. :P
The wooden peg on Muckman's nose is a nice touch.
Donnie saying "Technically we're turtle teens" reminded me of his "technically we're turtles" line from the 2014 movie.
Leo's voice still sounds odd to me at times.
Splinter breaking the TV and confiscating Mikey's tapes. Funny, but now no more Crognard!?
"TRASHNADO!" :D
Mikey's appetite for pizza never ceases to amaze me, even already partly-digested pizza
Did Bebop just say I'm Outie 5,000? That's Black Nerd's catch phrase. lol
It's actually Audi 5,000. ;)
I never understood what that was supposed to mean.Anyone know?
From Urban Dictionary:
Audi 5000
An adjective desribing one or more people who intend on leaving a particular place. Audi's model 5000 sedan was plagued with a problem charcterized by unintended acceleration, in which drivers' complained that the vehicle lurched forward when their foot was on the brake pedal. In reality, it turned out that the acclerator and brake pedals were unusually close together. This is why Audi 5000 is associated with leaving quickly, because that is what this vehicle did when some old fartknocker hit the gas instead of the brakes.
"I'm Audi 5000". or "I'm Audi".
As expected, Black Nerd Comedy loved this little shout out. :)

I was disappointed at the beginning of this episode, when I saw the sewer worker getting mutated. I was thinking: "Oh no! Another "Mutant of the Week" episode.
Muckman is gross and the thing I found weird was to see his own eye comes to life calling itself Eye Joe and talking with a Mickey Mouse voice.
Master Splinter was on a parenting mode when had to grounded the boys for disobeying him. April was their accomplice. I think Mikey won't be watching " Crognard" anymore since Master Splinter took the TV and tapes.
At least in this episode, Muckman ended up helping the Turtles against Beebop and Rocksteady and then he protected the Turtles identities.
I laugh in many of the scenes. :D I wish Mikey could stop being so disgusting.
Overall, not a bad episode.

It's not a beat-for-beat remake as some people here claimed it was, the old episode never involved the media or the Turtles getting grounded, not to mention several important differences in the details, but it was similar enough to be considered a remake.

I really like this version of Muckman a lot, and I'm so glad we've finally got another mutant ally. Can't wait to see more of him!
Him being a public hero will make him an unique addition to the cast. New characters should be created with this in mind by thinking what kind of stories that this new character can bring instead of just somebody that would have a limited visual appeal. They should think beyond of just making a character cool or awesome.

So I went ahead and watched "Muckman Messes Up" for comparison.
It's not a beat-for-beat remake as some people here claimed it was, the old episode never involved the media or the Turtles getting grounded, not to mention several important differences in the details, but it was similar enough to be considered a remake.
The A-plot does have a lot of similarities. And there was a moment in the OT involving the media where a reporter catches video of the Turtles escaping the lab. But April later informs them that had been cleared up. Muckman and Joe see that and think that since the Turtles happened to be the area where they were collecting trash they must have been the ones that caused the mutation.
The big difference is in the OT the Turtles were more publicly known and depending on the episode and circumstances they were seen as heroes or a public nuisance.
Joan Grody strikes me as a cross between Bern Thompson and that talk show host from "Turtles on Trial". So I can see her making smear reports about the Ninja Turtles about how their a menace to society and getting public out cry about them simply so it gains ratings for her show. Yeah Grody's attempts to expose the Turtles have been covered up for now, but I don't think this will be the end of it.

She's obviously heard or seen signs of the Turtles, but never had any actual proof as to their existence. Because when she catches them the has this face that just says "Gotcha!"
Media exposure on the Turtles is something that Shredder would use to his advantage. And it would be a good way to bring in characters such as Bishop or Dirk Savage or both since alien's wouldn't be the draw except for maybe the Triceratons.
And it could be a good way to get April started on her reporting career. Because if people like Grody or Gambe are going to make reports about Turtle sightings and what sort of threat they are to the city.
April could go back to that Message board that she started back in season one or even start a blog illustrating the other side of the coin.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much of a narrative remake of the old Muckman Messes Up episode this one seemed to be. Both start out with Rocksteady & Bebop being the cause of an accidental mutation of a garbage man/men and both have a subplot of how Muckman's aura has an adverse effect on the Turtles' health. April having a bigger role in this episode's plot and accompanying the Turtles on their patrol also seemed to be a bit of a call back to the original show's formula (Casey was sick that day or something?)
I also appreciated the subplot as to what happens when the Turtles don't get away quick enough to completely avoid the news media.
I wonder what Splinter did to April when she was trying to avoid reprimand by sneaking away at the episode's end? That was quite a funny moment for an end episode cliffhanger:

Sounds reasonable to me!
With all the increased attention these days on concussion trauma and their side effects, I expect to see a big push towards mainstream superheros "pressure pointing" their villains' minions to sleep rather than outright KO'ing them as has been tradition.

Yeah that's a value point. It always funny that superheroes like Batman and Daredevil have this no kill policy but they're perfectly okay of punching guys to a point losing major motor skills. http://i.imgur.com/6sF1cvK.png

I have a couple of comments, for once...
I was pretty surprised that Muckman mentioned the Pulverizer, and expected that people would know who he meant. Did Timothy make that much of a name for himself? He must have appeared in the media at least once. Like... "INEPT VIGILANTE ACCIDENTALLY BUSTS CRIME SCENE" or something, hee.
The initial reaction to Muckman was interesting. The woman reacted the way your average human does who sees a mutant, but the man was open-minded enough to register that he had been rescued, and corrected her. I'm not sure it's totally unrealistic - a single vocal advocate can do a lot for one's public image, I think. And people can follow others like sheep sometimes, if they're likeable enough - if the rescued man had a lot of charisma, he probably could sway public opinion of Muckman's character. Just an interesting thing about human nature: if you are very different, you will either be reviled, or be put on a pedestal, and sometimes it's a very thin line between the two. It depends on which reaction is the majority, and it can also change in an instant. He's in kind of a dangerous position, actually.

That's actually quite insightful. Hadn't really thought about that part of the episode before.
I always liked how at the end of "The Shredder is Splintered" episode of the old show, the news report shows a variety of citizen responses to the Turtles' value to the city.

Anyway, after rewatching the episode, I was thinking, considering Joan's gossip n' stuff, I still think at some point maybe there'll be an episode where someone goes hunting them down. Heck, if there was footage, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up on their version of YouTube.:tlol: Then perhaps it's brought to Bishop and Dirk's attention?

I pointed this very concept out earlier. That Joan discovering the Turtles has been rendered into just "Kids in Costume". Which the Media and Jone are accepting for now.
However this all could be foreshadowing to the one or all of the Turtles being in a fight against a villain such as the Pulverizer or Bebop and Rocksteady , or all the Foot Mutants.
And Grody happens to see it and gets it on film. The Turtles can't do anything about this because they are too busy fighting to realize they are being recorded. And she then uses to footage to paint the turtles as threats to the city. Which the public eats up.
This would naturally bring in Bishop, Savage, or both.
In the mean time April gets started on her hinted career as a journalist and starts a blog or goes back to that Message board from Season 1 and tries to convince the public that the Turtles aren't a threat.

I was nearly at the edge of my seat when the turtles were spotted by the news cast because surely enough, they've been spotted. It was a second too late for Mikey to throw the smoke bomb when they showed up. Splinter's reaction to viewing this on the news was hilarious, although I was hoping he say the "Ten flips now!" line. April getting annoyed by the news reporter kind of hints the idea of her being one.

For some reason this episode just rubs me the wrong way. A lot of the dialogue seems forced, and the animation seems super jerky at times. The transitions between certain scenes isn't very smooth either.
For a few minutes after he was first mutated, Muckman's right eye was the bigger one, and later it switches to the left.

I enjoyed the heck out of this episode. I LOVE Muckman and Joe Eyeball. Super gross, but with a heart of gold, haha! I hope he gets a few more appearances, and I hope they eventually demutate the poor guy. That's a pretty rough mutation to end up with.
As always, I love Bebop and Rocksteady, they have been nothing but entertaining to me so far. I love their continued discontent with being Foot lackeys. I think one of my favorite parts was Steranko being incredulous that anyone would throw out a perfectly good fake eyeball, haha! In fact, there were several good quick little gags, like the turtles ripping on the Bebop & Rocksteady van when their own Party Wagon is super conspicuous as well (even when it's not smashing into surrounding parked cars…) and the news report on the child-eating mutant turtles who are ninjas and named after artists. I laughed so hard when Bebop referenced Kriss-Kross! I love how firmly stuck in the 80's-90's his slang is.
I liked the fight scenes, I particularly noticed the birds-eye view of several of the fights, which felt like a new angle to me. The facial expression animation was top-notch. I liked April's role here, loved the Turtles being treated/acting more like teenagers with a strict father than they've been for awhile. Didn't miss Casey, will be interested to see if Joan Grody becomes more of an antagonist. Does anyone else besides me see her as sort of a parody/reference to Joan Rivers in some ways?

Although, they do have the ability to do minor changes on the models. The two cops we saw a lot of in the first season uses the exact same model, only they have been re skinned and wear differen hair meshes under the police hats.

I don't know how his story goes in OT, so I pretty much experience this character first time. He's ugly, yes... and I thought people will hate him and he will be on a rampage, kinda like Phantom of the Opera.

I finally just got around to watching this ep and I don't know what to say, honestly. I liked it and this retelling of Muckman and Joe Eyeball's story as my memory of the OT version is a bit vague. The only thing I remember is that Shredder had a real handgun, iirc, and that Joe Eyeball was hitting on Irma.
Anyway, I truly enjoyed the humor in this ep. Ironic humor is my favorite style, so when they were talking about stealth and then setting off alarms with the Turtle Van, I couldn't help but laugh.
The thing that caught me completely off guard was the mentioning of the Pulverizer. They truly need to conclude his story. I kinda hate the fact that no one reacted after Muckman mentioned it. Think he'll join the Mutanimals? Oh yeah, like how the turtles nearly caught. Almost reminded me of that season 2, I think it was, OT ep Turtles on Trial. Wonder if they'll ever go there, even though honestly, I'm surprised no one has ever caught the Turtles on film outside of Spiderbitz and they had that huge Shellraiser. SOMEone should've noticed something.
Oh yeah, gotta mention Joe Eyeball...creepy. It was the voice and the fact that it was his own eye. Too weird.
Bebop and Rocksteady are definitely growing on me and like the fact that they truly dislike their mutation situation.
So yeah...great ep. Wish more were like this actually. Thinking about it, the subtlety of the humor did seem better and this ep did feel season 1ish.

Couldn't agree more. Seeing that was really surprising for a kids show, but at the same time I though it was awesome. I liked this episode, and Muckman and Joe Eyeball were likable characters, they had the same kind of good soul personality like they did in the Fred Wolf series. The bones and showing of the severed spinal cord were disgusting, but at the same time a really cool design!
Still, I kinda wished Joe Eyeball was created by a second garbage man instead of just evolving from Muckman's own eyeball.

While this episode wasn’t a shot for shot remake of the OT Episode Muckman, Messes Up, there are a number of nods to it. There also nods to “The Toxic Avenger” as well, but I am likely to ignore those. It’s not that I have nothing against the Toxic Avenger, I just don’t have any familiarity with the film. I do however have some vague memories of the cartoon “Toxic Crusaders” which was based around the Toxic Avenger universe, but is otherwise its own thing entirely.
First what was similar between the Nick Show and the OT episode is that in both cases Muckman is mutated on accident. He initially believes that the Turtles are responsible because they happened to be in the vicinity when he is mutated. He has an ability to weaken the Turtles. He is then duped by the Shredder’s crew into believing the Turtles are bad guys who should be taken down, only to realize the Turtles were not the real bad guys. And in the end he helps the Turtles save the day.
However some of the ways this episode deviates from the OT episode are that Muck Man and Joe Eyeball were originally two different garbage men named Garson Grunge and Joe Junkee who were mutated at the exact same moment.
In the Nick version, Garson Grunge is the sanitation worker we see getting attacked by Leatherhead in “It came from the depths” and encounter briefly in the “Invasion of the Squirrelanoids”, “Fungus Humongous”, and “Pizza Face” While Joe Eyeball is not so much a mutation as much as he is a sentient organism that exists as part of Muckman’s body.
Also in the OT when Muckman and Joe are mutated they are hit with an unknown chemical compound that was poured out of a window by Bebop and Rocksteady. This chemical somehow reacts to the Turtles DNA causing them to become weakened just by being near Muckman. Donatello is fortunately able to make an antidote that renders them immune.
While in the Nick show, Muckman is hit by a container of mutagen that Bebop throws at Mikey and because of this one of his abilities is being able to vomit up a sludge that makes the Turtles temporarily ill.
Also finally in the OT the Turtles are caught on the News while the they are leaving the lab. But in the Nick Show they are accidentally caught on camera by Joan Grody while she is looking for more to report with Muckman.
Grody’s reaction when she manages to get what little footage she was able to acquire on Turtles. She gives this smile as if saying “Got ya.” It’s possible she may have heard rumors about the Turtles and or even caught a glimpse of them during the rescue from the Rat King but was never able to do reports on them but didn’t have any proof of their existence.
At one point when Grody is reporting about the Turtles she calls them “Child Eaters”. This can be simply taken her ignorance about the Turtles, after all with the exception of a few people most encounters with humans have had negative results.
However maybe the statement isn’t a misconception as much as it was an outright bias judgment. Don’t get me wrong, ignorance was part of it. However when Groady starts reporting on Muckman, it was because there was a group of people already calling him a 'hero'. So until she had reason to report otherwise, that was the direction she went. But with the Turtles she didn’t have anything to go on them except what she felt the general populous was most likely to believe. Which was inhuman creature= threat to public.
The big difference between the OT and every other version is that in the OT the public was shown as being aware of the Turtles. However majority of the time they often didn’t really care about what the Turtles were doing unless there was reason to.
In every other version, it was drilled into the Turtles heads from a young age that they couldn’t allow themselves to be seen by humans. This is mostly because the world outside the sewers would not openly welcome them because of what they are. But it’s because of who they are as people that enables them to make the human friends they have.
The nick show has also emphasized this. Part of Splinter’s statements of how they must keep to the shadows is because the Ninja Art is more effective if they act in secrecy. However the other part of it has to do with his paranoia about his son’s safety. While he knows his sons are capable of taking care of themselves, he is also aware that the more people that know about his sons existence the more danger that is placed on their family…So naturally if there is televised footage about the Turtles, there would be a strong likelyhood that it can cause paranoia among the humans and even more people that would be out in force to capture and cause harm to his sons.
In this episode Splinter’s actions were similar to when he grounded the Turtles back during Panic in the Sewers. In that episode Splinter is so horrified by the fact the Shredder has seen and had a first attempt at killing his sons, that he channels their fears with his own into one horrific nightmare. Which causes him to keep his sons in the lair and train until he personally felt they were ready to face the Shredder.
With this episode however, even though the Turtles escape truly being seen. The fact they were even caught on tape compromises their safety. In the Turtles defense Muckman had weakened them with his projectile vomit, so they weren’t in much of a condition where they could avoid being seen. Splinter still had every right to be upset with the Turtles because of it. And even though Muckman was able to cover their existence…at least for now, this media scare would likely be foreshadowing for the Turtles eventually being exposed to the citizens of New York.
In a way Joan Grody’s character reminds me of two characters from the OT. Berne Thompson and Clayton Kellerman.
In the OT Berne Thompson has a strong dislike for the Turtles and often attempts to out the Turtles as criminals. Part of this has to do with his girlfriend Tiffany dumping him at the end of Season 1 because of the Turtles (And yes that is a big part). But this is largely in part because, despite the fact the Turtles are saving the city from certain doom, their adventures occasionally lead them to take and/or destroy equipment from the Channel Six station or just have Channel 6 be affected in some form during the process. However despite the dislike, he does occasionally see the Turtles actions as useful when it comes to audience ratings. It was later in the OT when the Channel Six building is destroyed that Thompson declares the Turtles as Public enemy #1 making the four heroes wanted outlaws.
Kellerman on the otherhand is a talk show host who makes his career about slandering people on his TV show, “On Trial”. In the episode where he appears he starts calling out the Turtles as a clear and present danger to the city. Which starts a public outcry against the Turtles, and at the end of the episode even when the turtles literally save his life he still says he will talk trash about them simply because that's what would get an audience.
So what does this mean for Grody…well this is purely fan speculation, but this is a situation that I can see happening. There have been times I’ve been so off I’m out of the ball park, but there are other times that I have been right to the point of it being scary.
I can see this “Turtles Exposed” plot being restarted with Joan Grody complaining to her camera guy about how her show “Grody to the Max” is going to get the axe if her ratings don’t improve. She then notices the Turtles fighting let’s say Rocksteady and Bebop…for now.
Grody gets them on film and airs the footage on her show. Splinter is upset his sons have been caught on camera once again. Grody keeps presenting the Turtles in a negative fashion which cause paranoia among the people of the city not just about the turtles but mutants in general. The Shredder and his goons naturally see this as a means in which to deal with the Turtles. Possibly people like Hun, Fong, or the Shredder himself (If he's still around) offer J. Grody falsified stories about what sort of monsters the Turtles are. Eventually this also brings in characters such as Bishop or Dirk Savage, or both. And also maybe characters like Titanus and the mutants of H.A.V.O.C.
The Turtles themselves find they are having a hard time doing their patrols due to the people of the city creating “Anti-Turtle” watch groups. This forces the Turtles to relegate themselves to the safety of sewers in the more heated moments of this situation. Unfortunately they know this is not something that would just blow over with time. They need a way to get people to see that they aren’t the enemy.
In an effort to help her friends, April goes back to that message board she started in season one or even starts a new one as a blog. And uses this to give her views on the Turtles and how people shouldn’t judge them just because they are different. She even talks about the Turtles even though this exposes her as their friend. Eventually this comes to the attention of Joan Grody herself and she contacts April about having her and the Turtles for an interview which leads into a Nick version of Turtles on trial.
