http://variety.com/2015/film/news/tmnt-2-shredder-brian-tee-1201480798/

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2″ has cast Brian Tee (“The Wolverine”) as iconic villain Shredder, Variety has learned exclusively.

He’ll join Megan Fox (April O’Neil), Will Arnett (Vern Fenwick), Stephen Amell (Casey Jones) and Tyler Perry (Baxter Stockman) in the Paramount sequel. Michael Bay will once again produce with his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. David Green is set to direct from a script by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec.

The 2014 reboot of the beloved franchise brought in more than $485 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million. Tohoru Masamune played the villain in the 2014 movie.

Tee recently finished filming NBC drama pilot “Love is a 4 Letter Word” from director George Tillman Jr. and writer/producer Diana Son. He’ll next be seen in Universal’s “Jurassic World,” playing the role of Takashi Hamada.

Tee is repped by Abrams Artists Agency, manager Lisa DiSante-Frank, Sabrina Hutchinson Public Relations and attorney Mark Johnson of Behr, Abramson, Levy.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2″ will hit theaters on June 3, 2016.

Interesting. Maybe the ooze from the canister he broke in the first film rejuvenated and healed his scars? Hopefully this means Oroku Saki appearance in a suit and just just him running around in his Shredder exoskeleton.

Andrew NDB

Not entirely surprising. They were in a rush to find an Oroku Saki that would pass at a glance during the first "film"'s reshoots... now they probably want to actually have an Oroku Saki with better acting chops. To better order around Bebop and Rocksteady or talk about turtle soup again or whatever further wackiness is planned that I have no interest in.

Mr. Tee was pretty fun and venomous as the villain in Tokyo Drift. If this was a real Turtles movie I wouldn't be against him at all... with this, I just pity him.

Ok I'm confused

What's so confusing about it? They've recast the character is all.

While I generally enjoyed Tohoru Masamune in the role and liked the fact he was the only one who did actual research into the franchise, not that anyone would listen to him but I really liked that if he had his way he'd have liked to see the full Saki origin from the original comics but the fact that he was quickly cast at the last minute as essentially a minor role (which is what Shredder was in the finished product) I think there was always a danger they'd procure a bigger name for the sequel.

Of course there's something of an irony of them ditching an actor who hasn't done much mainstream work when the director is someone who hasn't done much mainstream work.

I didn't expect Shredder to be re casted and thought Tohoru Masamune was returning.

Can they recast April next :D

What happened to Tohoru Masamune? Too bad, he seemed very grateful to have the role, & I liked him in it, bad script aside. This guy's good, but like Andrew said, it's a waste of talent.

What is it with BayTurtles throwing actors under the bus with this series?

I mean, the guy who played Baxter in the last one was recast, Tohoru Masamune has been recast, Pete Ploszek got hipchecked out of the way with his voice acting for Leo in favor of Knoxville, and Danny Woodburn got the same treatment with Tony Shalhoub.

Makes you wonder who's going to be next on the chopping block.

Yes and no. It's clearly meant to be the same guy, but we'll likely see them retcon some things to give Shredder and Splinter their shared history.

We'll probably get some ******** plot point where Splinter wasn't learning from the ninjitsu book in the original; he was remembering.

But then again, we could have a Trevor Slattery/Aldrich Killian, Mandarin type situation.

In that film, those two knuckleheads stole the idea and legend of The Mandarin, and used it for their own personal gain. Of course, that came back to bite Slattery in the ass in the "All Hail The King" short, when agents for the TRUE Mandarin kidnapped Slattery so he could have a "talk" with him.

So yeah, I guess it is possible we'll see the real Shredder (the one pictured in Eric Sach's mural, or an ancestor) appear.

It could work in the story. Maybe Shredder got badly hurt in the last one so his younger brother takes up the mantel til Nagi is healthy enough to return. It would serve as a way for Sachs to have tension with the younger Shredder. A line could be put in the film about Eric taking a name that is a bastardized version of Saki would also help with why it sounds so similar to his mentors last/first name.

Or the rejuvenated route also works plus seeing how they like to sell toys my bet is on a standard Shredder so that they can sell a new fig and can save the budget for Rocksteady and Bebop.

Also Casey is gonna need a human to fight in this so why not Shredder and Human Bebop and Rocksteady.

Sooooo....they're pulling an "Iron Man 2" on us? Remember how they replaced Terrance Howard with Don Cheadle. I mean, sure they're the same race, but SERIOUSLY?!?! You could easily tell one actor was different from the other! Then again, how many Batmans have we had over the years?

Still, the only way they could make this work is to have him in full garb throughout the entire movie or give him really good prosthetics to make him look older than Sachs, if this is the same Shredder. Didn't Shredder get replaced by his younger brother in the original comics after he was killed in battle or something like that? It's been awhile since i read the Mirage.

Let's see. Michael Bay's still on board and Megan Fox is desperate enough for work that Bay will take advantage of her in this situation. Plus she's still really hot and he doesn't care about her personality or acting abilities? Yeah, she's still April.

I'm sorry. I really don't mean to sound like a troll and I do actually respect Fox more than most people, but Bay clearly doesn't care about audience or fandoms or PEOPLE for that matter. All he cares about is money and special effects and will take any shortcuts to get his way. He doesn't care how bad a script is, how lazy the cinematography is, so long as he gets his boom fetishes in and people pay money to see them. I only see them to support the franchise, not Bay.

It's cool, dude. I have nothing against Megan Fox. I was one of the few people that was looking forward to her playing as April. Unfortunately, I just think she didn't do April much justice. I gave her the benefit of the doubt but she just didn't do as good as I thought she would. I'm willing to give her another chance since she too is a big fan but who's to say that there will even be much improvements in the sequel.

I know we often say this...

...but this is FURTHER proof that Sachs was meant to be Shredder when Fitchner was cast. The backlash caused them to make last minute changes, which is why they hurriedly complete reshoots with Tohoru Masamune - shooting the absolute minimum to establish Shredder as a asian man. And now, having to live with that choice, they need to show more of Shredder behind the mask, and they are going with a more recognizable asian face in american culture. Brian Tee.

Im happy for the guy, but would have preferred they kept Masamune.

If Masamune is returning as himself in the film, perhaps Tee is his son, and he will pass along the 'mantle' of Shredder to him to get revenge on the Turtles.

All in all, William Fitchner's character is seeming more and more redundant, especially now, with the inclusion of other major baddies, Stockman, B&R. Sachs is just another grunt, which is a shame considering the actor's pedigree.

Sucks to be Tohoru Masamune.I know especially after this interview.Well, we all saw Shredder’s fingers dipping into the mutagen at the end (Let me tell you, I was one psyched actor was to see that!), so we know Shredder’s coming back. As for me reprising the role, I’ve been in this business long enough to not assume anything. I do not have a 3-picture deal, nor has anyone approached me yet about the sequel. I certainly seemed to work well with the team though. A wonderful moment for me was when we were celebrating at the premiere after-party. I was having a great conversation with one of the producers, Andrew Form, about the experience of being a late-comer to this project. When we finished up the conversation he said, “Well, not anymore, you’re part of the family now. You’re Shredder!” We’ll see though. If it all ended right here, I’d still be the happiest actor in Hollywood. If I get that phone-call a few months from for now, you’ll definitely hear me screaming and dancing in the streets.http://www.xexmag.com/interview-tohoru-masamune-of-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles//

Sooooo....they're pulling an "Iron Man 2" on us?

No. Not even close. On Iron Man 2, Howard demanded too much money, and rather than give in to his ridiculous demands (he wanted more than Downey, whom he made more than for the first film), they dropped him.

In this case, Oroku Saki was never meant to be in TMNT1. And the actor they did cast was only meant for the reshoots, nothing else. He was (sadly), a glorified stand-in. They even hid his face for most of the film (though badly).

So they aren't wrong to recast that role since they never really did so to begin with. However, it does suck for the original actor. Hopefully they find something else for him.

As far as K. Todd Freeman, they cut out all of his parts from the first anyways. Probably due to Saki being worked into the script, and Sachs taking the place likely meant for Stockman (building the Shredder armor). So, they had the freedom to get a name actor for the part this time around and did so.

Now Plozek and the Splinter actor being replaced..... no ****ing excuse. That was just a dick move. Though, the Splinter replacement was better than the original probably was. Leo.... not so much. Knoxville was distracting, and not very Leo sounding.

They aren't wrong to recast that role since they never really did so to begin with.

I think it's wrong.

They paid the man to act and he acted well. I can't stand this film, but I appreciate the outstanding work of the some of actors considering they had so little to work with: Will Fichtner, Tohoru Masumane, and Minae Noji were the highlights of the film.

To cast Masumane out - especially after being invited into the "family" - makes it seem as though he did something wrong, when in fact he did his very best. He came in on very short notice, did his scenes very well, and then got kicked out for no reason. He has better acting skills than Fox, Arnett, and the 4 turtles combined.

If Sacks is back then that's fine with me. Fichtner was very good at the role. Very charismatic. Very good actor. He's too good for this movie.

I think he's still confirmed as coming back.

The extensiveness of his role? No idea.

I hope he's the maaaain villain again though.

Like I said before, clutter, clutter and more cluttering. He'll probably have 2 seconds of screentime, wasting even MORE money that could be spent on the cgi turtles.

He came in on very short notice, did his scenes very well, and then got kicked out for no reason. They did have a reason. They wanted a bigger named actor. That's Hollywood, it's all about da money. I know it sucks for him but what are you gonna do? He was a no-name actor hired to do last minute reshoots. He knew what he was getting into.

#MechaFresh
04-28-2015, 11:39 PM

Just curious, when did Pete Ploszek get replaced?

Tora

I think they can salvage Sachs by making him an Utrom named Krang at the end of this movie. This allows them to set him up as the main baddie in the 3rd film and with some voice modding and CGI they can make him look and sound menacing. It would really tie things together for his character if he ended up as Krang in the end IMO.

They could always have this guy as the previous Shredder's son, seeking revenge against the Turtles for his father's death. Giving an actual conflict between Shredder and the Turtles. Finchter basically is the failure of a brother who tried to take the father's legacy and shape it in his own image (using the tertm Foot Clan in name only). Karai could easily have been sent there as a spy (a popular job of female ninja) reporting to Saki the disgrace brought upon the idea of the Foot. Saki comes to on NY to redeem the name the name of the Foot and to seek revenge on the Turtles, keeping Karai as his confident. So you have a purpose for Shredder against the Turtles and Sachs, leading to a potential alliance, or leading to Sachs creating Bebop and Rocksteady as his own body guards.

So... in staying away from the traditional origin story because "It was too complicated", they may NOW be introducing, according to your theory, a story that is at least TWICE as complicated as the one they refused to adapt in the first place?

....I can f***ing actually see that happening. That'd be so damn perfect for these boneheads.

TurtleMikey
04-30-2015, 12:28 AM
The most straightforward explanation is that its the same Shredder, and they're just retconing some things.

A better way would be to say the new Shredder is Oroku Saki, the younger brother of the Shredder in the first film.

The two had been distant and cut off from one another due to differing philosophies on what the Foot Clan should be (as seen by the more militarized foot of the first, compared to the second's more traditional looking foot).

Following his brother's defeat at the hands of the Turtles (could be in a coma or later died following their battle), Saki comes to NYC to exact revenge and aligns with Baxter Stockman, providing funding, manpower, and test subjects, in exchange for the tools to defeat the turtles (I.E. Mutants of his own, mousers, possibly even robotic foot soldiers).

Holy hell, PLEASE let this theory be correct. You could have this Shredder be so much more badass by using an actual Shredder costume rather than wearing Megatron's summer attire. Do you know how badass it would be to see Shredder, in a lighter, close to the original comics armor whooping all four of the Turtles' asses? Mary mother of God, I'd love that.

Boom. Love it.

It's an easily accessible way to insert not only the theme of revenge, which great tmnt stories thrive on, but give Shredder a more grounded motivation that can pull from the family aspect of tmnt, if it so desires.

Of course, he'll likely also want to blow up the city despite whatever else is going on in his life.

Something I was thinking a bit on... Some people may have complained that the story for the first film got messed up (to what actual degree? *shrug*) because they removed Sacks as Shredder and some fans blamed other fans for it. However, on the plus side - the complaints kinda did do a good thing in keeping Hollywood, or at least these film makers, slightly check on the diversity. Asian actors pretty obviously don't get quite as many opportunities as white and black actors do, and, while I guess it's unfortunate that the other guy is replaced, this Brian Tee guy seems pretty cool. If he does well with the role, then maybe the complaints over a role that should rightly go to an Asian actor will have been well worth it. :) (Considering we'd otherwise just still have Eric Sacks as Shredder... yawn.)

From the looks of things, it wasn't going to be good either way. Either we get a mess of a story due to fandom meddling or a story about Alien Ninjas against a Corporate CEO in Robot Battle Armor that probably wasn't going to good to begin with. (TMNT in Name Only).

Yeah, I think we lucked out with the former though that's like saying a kick to the groin is better than burning your hand while cooking.

Honestly if the character is still portrayed as disfigured then I don't think it matters or would even be noticeable to most people anyway.

If Brian Tee is playing the same character but without any kind of makeup then I'd say it warrants some kind of explanation even if it's just Karai saying "master your wounds--?" but I doubt we'll get it.

Then again I'm kind of on the fence. While it would be questionable creatively I don't think many people would deny there are things in the last movie that I don't think would be a bad idea to flat-out ignore. Heck if fans are still banking on some Yoshi/Saki backstory the only way it would work is to gloss over the whole origin the gave.

this guy was probably cast because he was cheaper...they most likely wont say a word and hope no one notices

To be fair I think Tee is probably more expensive and a more reliable actor.

I think Masamune did well with what he was given and it's nice to think there's at least one person involved that actually knows something about the franchise but he's a bit player brought in to play essentially a bit part. It's kinda cruel and probably robs Masumune of an opportunity to prove himself but I can see why they wouldn't want an untested actor to play Shredder in a proper role.

All in good fun. I agree that this film deserves all the derision it gets from passionate fans like yourself. And it is a turkey of a film. I see some potential in it if they admitted their mistakes and did a complete overall. I'm hopeful for the changes I do see, but as many have noted, they still have the same writers..so it's doubtful. As I mentioned in my review, one easy fix would be to make Splinter somehow remember his time before being a lab rat....when Stockman snagged him as he ran in fear from his dead masters apartment. When he finds the book in the sewer later, he's simply recalling past moves he learned will mimicking his master Yoshi (who either fled Japan or was following Saki to America). That fixes some if the core issues I had with the first film and can be done in flashback in a few minutes. The new Shredder could be mutated younger version or the son or brother of the first one. Sachs was an Ultrom.. Etc

When he finds the book in the sewer later, he's simply recalling past moves he learned will mimicking his master Yoshi (who either fled Japan or was following Saki to America).

Something tells me they won't even begin to put that much thought into it.

Why would they? The first film made enough money, so it's clearly a "only nerds care, we'll do whatever we want" kinda thing.

And I can almost guarantee Brian Tee is playing the same Shredder. Either younger because of the mutagen he got on him or just because they felt like recasting him.

But we can still hope for the best right?! I know I'm being naive, but I get a lot of mileage out of the time between films and speculating for something better. I'm imagining a better second film that addresses some of these issues, based on the set pics. Yes, Casey Jones should have long hair and look grungy. Other than that, I can't point to anything else that seems as off as the last one. Seems like its nitpicking at this point, until all the cards are on the table.

And I'll just leaves this here before anyone else does...I know....http://i.imgur.com/egbVHi4.gif

And if this were any other sequel to any other Ninja Turtles movie from any other studio/producer/director/writer, I'd probably be hopeful too.

But they've done nothing but disappoint me since Blue Door got leaked all the way to today.

And hope is fine. Hope all you want, I don't begrudge anybody WANTING this movie to be good. I saw the first one, and too many elements are back for me to have any hope in THIS movie at all, the inclusion of characters I like or not. Hope died for me when I saw the first movie.

But again, that's just me.

Fair enough. All TMNT fans have had to weather through some crap through the years and the mythology continues marching onward. It's always been choose-your-own adventure -pick the cartoon, comic or movie path. They never were fully in sync. Hollywood moves at such a glacial pace, that it will be a decade before a new film series is started, regardless of how the second one does. If the next one doesn't improve in quality, but makes more money, we are in for a nightmare few more years of Transformers level nonsense. I hope that's not the case. A new director has to count for something. Maybe NICK cried foul at all the crap changes and demanded a course correction. Maybe they don't have a say at all. Anyone know what kind of pull they have on the film series?

I believe Paramount is owned by Nick, but because of that they put all their trust into them. I don't think they really interfere unless it's something like Spongebob. This project is very much set apart from the Nick series, so they most likely let them do their own thing. If not, I think we'd see more similarities between the two.

I doubt it's much, if any. Nick has say over their cartoon, but Platinum Dunes/Paramount/Viacom has say over the movie, since Paramount put Michael Bay/Platinum Dunes in charge of the thing at the very start of all this trainwreck.

Both Paramount and Nick are owned by Viacom. In the film and tv divisions respectively. But I doubt Nick is at all over Paramount.

It's an interesting question. Quite often reading interviews and articles about the production of the last movie it would alternate between referring to Nickelodeon and Paramount as major company behind the movie.

Regardless I do think that whoever it is wasn't fully on-board with Platinum Dunes plans. If you recall Bay said in an interview the Blue Door script was from before he was involved and had been rejected by the powers that be. We know this to be true but he conveniently left out some details.

If you read many of the interviews by people involved in the movie and look between the lines of what they say you can form a crude history and it seems Paramount/Nickelodeon was against their approach so then Form and Fuller twisted Bay's arm to be involved presumably because his track record with turning another 80s property into a billion dollar movie series gives ideas he backs more credibility and as we know the eventually accepted a script very much like the Blue Door.

I'd argue the reason the studio was amenable to listening to fan complaints may be because they were never fully on-board with them themselves. That actually may be a good sign for the sequel but what they really need to change is money to make new 3D models, search for and hire new writers etc. I doubt they want to do that when they can just quickly put out a sequel and try and give it a new color of paint.

Actually he very much lied about that.

In late May 2010, it was announced that Paramount and Nickelodeon had brought Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form on to produce the next film that will reboot the film series. Bay, Fuller, and Form would produce alongside Walker and Mednick.

In August 2012, an early version of the script, dated January 30, 2012, titled "The Blue Door" and written by Appelbaum and Nemec, was leaked online.

And here's the Deadline Hollywood article confirming the first quote with date.

Bay was involved since the beginning. The Blue Door script was absolutely under him and approved by him.

I'm really over my initial repulsion to the designs ( except for Splinter...gives me the willies), but when I finally relented and saw the film, it was the butchering of their origins and the lack of Yoshi/Saki history that had me screaming WTF!!!!???

It reminds me so much of the 1998 Tristar Godzilla.. Yes, GINO was repulsive, but it was the origin and his/her wimpy actions/powers that had fans so up in arms.

The core fictional texts of an adapted property has to be revered as THE SOURCE. Some things you don't mess with, otherwise what is the point? It's arrogant and egotistic to try to put your spin on things, if that spin violates the central principals of the characters you are adapting for the screen.

I'm not all about Marvel, but the Turtles are in desperate need of a Kevin Fiege like person to navigate their Hollywood course.

Oh yeah, it was waaaayyyy more his movie than Liebesman's or anybody else's. It's why I laugh when I see "Bay didn't direct it! It wasn't his movie!"

He was involved from the start, he was the face of the movie, on set, got final say in designs, got final say in final cut of the movie(yes I'm aware of the producer's role on films, Bay was far more involved, clearly).

It's one of the reasons why I have zero hope for this film.

Pretty much the only thing different outside of cosmetic changes for characters and the inclusion of MORE characters is that they have a new no-name to sit in the director's chair.

A guy who probably holds even LESS sway than Liebesman did. Which wasn't a lot.

Still I guess I kinda held out some hope...some minor, minuscule hope that Paramount/Nickelodeon knew those plans were garbage but were blinded by the fact it was pitched by the guy who made them billions with another 80s "nostalgia" property but I think I'm just kidding myself.

In reality, we all lose. Instead of having a quality movie series we can all rally behind and get excited about, fans are bickering with each other non-stop over this turd.

Fans like me lose because the characters and source material(s) we love are being cynically, heartlessly mined for quick money by people with no real affection or interest in them in as many terrible Michael Bay productions as they can crap out as quickly as possible.

Fans like you lose because, even if you all enjoyed the movie -- and I'm sure you did -- most of you would still probably like to see a much better one, and as long as franchise fans are throwing mountains of money and support at these movies because they've got the name "Ninja Turtles", and encouraging everyone they know to do the same, that's never gonna happen.

And the property itself loses, because even if these movies make hefty bags of money for a handful of producers and executives, it ultimately makes the overall property/concept look worse and lowers its "standing" in the pop-cultural conscious. Eventually that'll catch up with it; if enough bad material is put out for a long enough time, people will get sick of it and stop paying for it, and then it'll disappear for a long while. It happened before, after all. And if the general public, and even the executives in charge of it, equate the overall property with garbage movies made exclusively to cash in on a known brand name, it's gonna be an uphill battle trying to get anyone to care about it again once the shine's completely off that apple. Except this time we don't have Peter Laird and Mirage actively fighting to keep their baby alive.

No worries, man. If this series stinks up the brand that much, Nick could sell the Turtles off and we'll get a new spin on them in a few years. Worse case, they let it lay dormant for a bit, then try it again another way. But what is wrong with wanting the 2nd film to be better and rectify this series? Why isn't this something lovers and haters of the first one agree upon.? It adds like what, 2-3 more years to this cycle of film and they can go on to the next. I think the brand would be tarnished more by being seen as a commercial failure. As crappy as the last Spider-Man film was , as a fan I would have rather that film series finished out, instead of being truncated. Same as the 2007 TMNT. John Carter is another example.

Not all will loose. That's a sad pessimistic outlook, here's the optimist outlook. ;)

Fans like you loose cause you don't like it. Simple as that. You can't see beyond the flaws (as if the other movies has no flaws, whatever). You can't appreciate it? Fine.

Fans like me and possibly half a billion contributed to it win cause we enjoy it. Sure we'd like it to be better, and the sequel behind the scenes pics show much promises. Cameos like Judith Hoag returning, Bebop & Rocksteady, Shredder and Karai, all seems in good hands. We're excited. Like many things, improvements can be made with progression of time.

So what if it's made by Bay team? Transformers still runs today and making billions of blockbuster films. Does it tainted the series? The toons still goes on, you can watch that. Same thing applies to TMNT, you can watch Nick. The company make money, customers are happy, win-win situation. Only deluded fans like yourself thinks that everyone looses in this situation.

Some haters hate the Bay turtles movies so much, why waste your time here? If I don't like a movie, I don't watch it and leave, that's it. Like going to a bad restaurant, never going back there. The way I look at it, it's not even about me, I just don't want the Turtles to lose. Maybe I'm just some woman who cares about something plenty of others don't and don't care at all how it's made... maybe I'm silly for looking at these fictional characters and wanting them to have the best, but I adore them so I do want that for them and feel they fully deserve it. If someone for the first time is going to take them into the territory of blockbuster movies, then give them all the best and treat them with the utmost respect they and any other great hero characters deserve - don't take them there only to just give them half-assed treatment or treated like simply supporting cast in their own film.

Yes, the majority of people walking around are idiots. I'm well aware.

That does NOT mean that everyone needs to dumb everything down to THEIR standards, for God's sake. There are ENOUGH horrible movies and TV shows and whatever else. And it's BECAUSE it's easier to dumb everything down, than to teach people the difference between "quality" and "crap", and to get them to care. But that doesn't mean we should ALL have to suffer because of a few vocal, ignorant people, who will gladly and happily swallow every single goddamn thing put in front of them.

It's not "negative" or "pessimistic", it's called HAVING TASTE. You're not SUPPOSED to sit through everything you see with your brain turned off, drooling on yourself and scratching your ass. Why is this hard? Why is ANY of this so hard to "get"? Why do we celebrate and ENCOURAGE mediocrity and subpar effort?

Christ.

Brother, I'm around THOUSANDS of people a week. ALL I DO is exist among gigantic groups of people. I help run three gyms with a client list in the thousands, just to start. I'm gonna go ahead and say that I'm around way, WAY more people than most of you.

And while most of them are nice, a TON of people are really, really, REALLY stupid. "How did you even graduate?" stupid. And when you are FORCED to have long, drawn-out, in-depth conversations with them, you start to realize that something isn't right upstairs. Not that they have anything "wrong" with them, I don't mean people with clinical problems, I mean people who are allegedly high-functioning, yet still have no common sense or otherwise demonstrate a complete and total lack of comprehension.

Some people are gems, don't get me wrong. But "gems" are special because they're rare.

But yeah, I won't bore me with my life story. Suffice to say that if we add it up, though, Yes, I'm constantly around far more people than most, which gives me, at the worst, a pretty solid Educated Guess. Like Carlin said, "A few winners, a whole lotta losers."

Which was my entire point, yeah? If you legitimately enjoy it, that's totally fine. If you think it's ideal as-is, okay, great. But if you legitimately want something better and you keep supporting something sub-par for the sake of supporting it... you're helping keep it down. That's just how it is.

I think you're making some serious assumptions here. I do watch the Nick show and read the IDW comic, and I enjoy them a lot. I'm not wanting for anything, and Platinum Dunes making some awful movies isn't keeping me up at night. I do wish we could get something better from the potentially widest-reaching current media version of this property, and yeah, I'm a fan -- enough of a fan to have written a couple thousand posts here -- and seeing something so bland, lazy, and cynical attached to this property is something that upsets me. I feel very strongly that it's capable of a lot more, and I'm not gonna stop calling for that, because I don't want this property getting tossed in the garbage again after years of awful, cynical money-grabs like it did in the '90s. Because it's not just here - check any place people are talking about these movies and you'll see a lot of criticism. They're deeply divisive, and that isn't helping the property or the fandom one bit.

But it's not my top priority in life. Talking about this, or debating, or even arguing, is a little fun "escape" on the side. I love TMNT and I love talking about it, and it just so happens that takes the form of criticizing a bad movie and a probably-bad sequel that are in the pop-cultural consciousness right now. If you think I'm just constantly teeming with rage over these stupid movies, you're dead wrong. I save that kind of stuff for the times I check in here. And I appreciate having this space to do that.

Because, again, I'm a fan. I want to see this property live up to its full potential. I want to see good movies, good shows, and good comics that keep pushing the potential of these characters and concepts. You may see that as negative and cynical, but I think the opposite's true - accepting something sub-par as "good enough" seems a lot more cynical to me.

I must be a very dysfunctional person because I severely enjoy everyone's screaming/pissing/namecalling matches.

Or I'm a Sith Lord. Yeah, that's it. "Let the hate flow through you" and all that pizazz.

Let's compare Guardians of the Galaxy to TMNT, shall we? One broke the mold and proved that it wasn't just for children, it was for everyone. Intelligent writing, characters and plot twists that made sense, and great toy sales. TMNT? Obviously just for children who don't notice little things like terrible writing, last minute script rewrites and recasts, and nonsensible third act evil plans. PAINFULLY OBVIOUS to anyone of intelligence, but kids will eat it up. It also killed Lego's license for TMNT because of lousy toy sales.

One method establishes to the world at large that this brand can be taken seriously. One method only gets ticket sales because of curiosity, nostalgia, and parents taking their insufferable kids so as to get them out of the house.

Now did I personally enjoy TMNT? Yes, I did, in spite of all it's problems. Am I satisfied with it? Aw hell no. Am I expecting the sequel to be better? NO. Hoping, yes; expecting, no.

We should be terrified of this sequel, not fawning all over it like insipid people with poor taste.

If Spiderman can lose his current film franchise because of terrible movies, indie characters with a narrower market should be shaking in their shells...

Kinda like all the stuff that would make the turtles relateable in the last movie?

I remember a few of the actors talking up the whole idea that the turtles would feel alienated from the humanity and that was a major theme of the movie. Either they were blowing smoke or it all ended on the cutting room floor.

Quite frankly "relateable" could mean anything. I mean not being in shadow all the time and having more than a handful of lines makes him instantly more relateable than how the character was in the last movie.

Shredder is kind of relatable in the Nick series, Perhaps they are going that route?

The whole relationship he has with his daughter Karai, Perhaps we will see that in the sequel, since we seen set images of the two together.

Well Tohoru Masamune's version seemed to be visually based on the Shredder from the Nickelodeon series but now that seems to have gone in favor of a more Steve Barron version with a single scar.

Strange thing is given the origin for Splinter and the turtles then Shredder being based on those versions seems improbable. As someone said the lack of Yoshi or Tang Shen means he can't be like either of those versions. Although to be fair the could add in Yoshi and Shen but with Splinter being from a lab instead of belonging to Yoshi or actually being a form a Yoshi then how would it relate to the turtles which is kinda the whole point of the backstory anyway.

Only way I can think to squeeze Yoshi in there at this point is to go the DNA route and have some revelation that there was human DNA used in the mutagen, coming from a man named Yoshi. (Cripe, it could be used explain these Turtles heavily leaning toward being human-ish. Commence identity crisis.) Then bring him in somehow.

It's entirely possible that they can try and retroactively insert a more standard backstory to Splinter and Shredder but I honestly don't think it can be done without heavy reaching.

I've seen a lot of suggestions that Splinter had some of Yoshi's DNA thus he's programmed with the Yoshi's ninjutsu abilities and memories. This would kind of contradict the turtles and Splinter being test subjects for a cure to a specific disease but putting that aside why would Saki want to give lab animals the abilities of a guy he hated?

Same with the idea that prior to being in the lab Splinter was Yoshi's pet. Considering that they seemed to desperately avoid a normal rat doing extra-normal things then how would he end up at TCRI? Would Shredder take him there? Now I've killed Yoshi I shall take my ultimate revenge and use his pet for animal testing HA, HA, HA"

"I'll get you! And your little dog rat, too!"

Whole thing is one big contradiction already either way. Trying to make a cure, it mutates your lab animals - what kind of side effect is that?? Then when you take it out of them you intend to use it as-is for a cure. Righhhht.
