View Full Version : Should the Turtles be redesigned for the sequel?

So the designs of the Turtles were very poorly received. Instead of being slim and small ninja's, these Turtles were 6 foot tall hulking monsters with hideous nostrils. Even worse was their "accessories" like Leo having tattoo's or Don wearing glasses, or Mikey's sunglasses danging from him, wtf was up with that?
While they probably can't change the designs too much in order to remain in continuity, do you think they can alter some things? Drop the glasses for Donatello entirely, remove some of their human accessories, and phase out the nostrils at the least. They would still be 6 foot tall Hulk ripoffs, but at least some of the more offensive stuff would be gone.

I'm not bothered but I'm guessing the the turtles will probably change a little bit, like wearing different accessories ect because Playmates will want different toys to sell.

Virtually everyone who talked about them in our Toy Section reported the same thing, that they were shelf-warming harder than any TMNT line ever did in the past. As a matter of fact, they recently changed the packaging of the movie line to match the Nick series, in the hopes they can fool parents into buying them. :tlol:
What's sad is I would've bought them regardless of my dislike for the series/designs just to have representation on my shelf, but man, those were some baaaad toys.

Hmm. Well, if that's indicative of a trend in stores nationwide, that means there's a possibility the designs MIGHT change a bit.
To answer the thread title, SHOULD they change? God yes. They're awful. Ninja Turtles shouldn't be over 6 feet tall, hulked out, bulletproof, overly-accessorized monsters.
WILL they? Remains to be seen. I have my doubts but you never know.

Granted this is redundant for the other designs thread recently posted in, but...
For the most part, no... Physically, just let up on the steroids, as well as the shell, they're dang sliders, not box turtles, even if Sacks stupidly calls them that later in the first film. The mass of those shells almost makes my own back hurt.
Otherwise, leave them alone because the only thing messing with it would probably do it just put everyone back at square one with finding acceptance of designs for this set of films.
As for their gear/clothing, Mikey and Donnie need to let up on it, Leo and Raph are fine imo, though I'm sure for merchandise they'll no doubt have a costume change.
I'm still kinda surprised they gave Leo tattoos. The one most likely to be a bit of a purist? It's unreasonable for those to disappear though. I don't mind it, but at least actually give us reason they are meaningful to him. Not just because "teenager" and "tattoos are cool."
Otherwise, just please make an effort to get some flattering shots in there (because dear god some angles and lighting are not flattering on these guys), esp of my fave and make me wanna hug him a time or two, then I can settle with that. (But for the love of turtle gods, extract Knoxville from his vocal cords, please.)
I'm kinda ok with the noses now. Leo at least. Donnie likewise since he's wider like Leo, but would be more flattering without the glasses. Mikey and Raph... too much "puppy" or something going on there.

They'll probably not, but at the very least, I hope they go a bit back to the original concept art where they at least was less bulky and a little less problematic.
But I doubt anything besides maybe clothes will change.

I like the new designs, The nostrils and everything didn't bother me, Besides, The designs should stay the same, Except maybe they could use less clothing and less accessories, Besides, For continuity sake, They have to look like they did before.
They are currently using a placeholder model for Leo and Raph on the set, And judging from it, They will look the same.

The ONLY problems I have with the PD designs are:
#1) PD's lack of subtlety in distinguishing Donatello as the "geek". Lose the Ghostbusters backpack, the non-traditional bo staff, and either the glasses or the goggles.
#2) The size. Everyone repeat after me: "NO MORE SIX-FOOT BULLET-PROOF HULKS WITH SHELLS!" Four feet tall, maybe five at the most.

I'm actually kinda ok with them being tall. This time. :tlol: *ducks*
I can embrace the viciously skilled ninjas (they're ninjas, right...?) who, if you know them, are really just gentle giants.
I could embrace it better if they allowed them to be 25 or 30-years-old. (So it works better as just, oh, um, surprise! They ended up bigger as adults than expected.)
I however could do without the steroids that make them look even bigger than they are.
And I do not however embrace being bullet proof. That was stupid.
Also being big however is no excuse for not still being highly trained to act stealthy...

They will DEFINITELY change the designs. They need to differentiate themselves so that kids will buy new toys. Transformers made this mistake, and watched their sales drop for two films. Why would you buy a new Bumblebee when he looks the same? Hasbro publicly acknowledged that mistake and redesigned all their Transformers for the fourth film. So they learned from that mistake, and won't make it again.
But I don't expect anything more than clothes to change. Heck, they may only be wearing clothes in the first movie as a built-in way to change the action figures each film.

I always see Cubed getting thrashed for bringing up the nostrils thing but I feel exactly the same way about them as he does.
Leo is the best of the bunch, but that's damning with faint praise and I can't stand the sight of these...these...turtles.

I don't see them changing the designs too drastically. The nostrils are fine on everyone except Mikey, in my opinion. But I do think they're going to make the Turtles less muscular. I don't mind them being six feet tall, as long as they're not *HUGE*. Like, Donnie, in my opinion, had the best body out of all of the Turtles.
I feel like the main problem is that they're all so damn top-heavy. Raph's bicepts are fine for his character, but they do need to slim him down a little bit more. Also, I feel like Leo should match Donnie's body, too. Mikey's body I'm fine with, since he's shorter.

I can deal with the Turtles. The one who needs a major makeover is Shredder. I swear to God, if I see those swiss army knives pop out of his hands again, I'm going to be like CyberCubed with the nostrils.

Americans in general - American movie audiences in particular - have trouble accepting someone who isn't at least 6'2, 220 (GONG!) as an action hero - or an athlete, for that matter.
The fact that Ninjas tend to be relatively small, wiry guys with mad flexibility, gymnastics, martial arts and weapon skills who are excellent at blending in and going unnoticed is pretty lost on them, they want HULK SMASH!!! with mega-muscles only achievable by emptying 1970's East Germany's arsenal of steroids.
The additional fact that neither red-eared sliders (original Turtle lore) nor box turtles (2014 moovee lore) turtles get very big is also irrelevant, they want The Turtle That Who Ate Cleveland. As a teenager.
I'm almost afraid to ask how über-hyper-extra-mega-ginormously-quintuple-super L A R G E Bebop and Rocksteady will be......
Nostrils?
Who cares? They're too far skyward to see anyway......

I've said it a thousand times, and I'm not shy about saying it again:
Massive, hulking, bullet-proof turtles with strength and power does not serve the plot. It does not serve the concept. These turtles weren't ninjas. They weren't stealthy. They weren't fast. We barely even saw much in the way of martial arts skills.
Small turtles who use swift, stealthy skill to avoid bullets is MUCH more interesting.
The fact that Ninjas tend to be relatively small, wiry guys with mad flexibility, gymnastics, martial arts and weapon skills who are excellent at blending in and going unnoticed is pretty lost on them, they want HULK SMASH!!!
Yup. Basically this.
So yes, in my mind, they should be redesigned. Whether or not they will be is another thing. From the on-set pics that are now coming out, the mo-cap suits include those little antennae used to map eye-line, so it looks like the size has not been altered. And if the height remains, pretty certain the hideous frames will remain too.
The nostrils don't bother me at all. Turtles have nostrils. Fact. It adds realism. I'd like to see their faces a tad less human though.
As for the ugliness. Personally, I prefer them when they aren't quite so hard on the eyes.

Also, I feel like Leo should match Donnie's body, too.
Nooo... :tlol: Leo could use a little bit of a steroid intervention himself (though not as much as Raph), but keep a reasonable amount of the muscle tone, please. :trazz: Donnie is so much the opposite out of obvious geek stereotype, you'd think he almost never trains at all and yet he's just as skilled.
Leo looked great in some of that late concept art. Athletic, a bit heroic, right amount of muscle. There's some obvious resemblance to the actual film model, but clearly he, as well as his brothers, got abused somewhere along the way between concept and screen ready. :ohwell:
The one who needs a major makeover is Shredder. I swear to God, if I see those swiss army knives pop out of his hands again, I'm going to be like CyberCubed with the nostrils.
:tlol: Yeah... They kind of hurt themselves by going with a Super[duper] Shredder from the get go. Where can they really even go from there that wouldn't be ridiculous.
hideous nostrils. .
:tlol: You're the first person I think of when I see the "Nostrils" on these turtles!
But yeah a trimmed down design with less going on would be nice for sure. I just hope they don't recycle the same models as it would seem the turtles never ever change out of their clothes :tlol:

Hmm, very interesting. It at least adjusts Fox's eye line a little, so maybe?
Mocap outfits look new. Doubt it means anything (and maybe they simply made adjustments that don't affect it but make it easier to do the work?), but the shell also doesn't look quite as bulky.

Adjusting the scale of the models within a scene is prob the easier change to make, but yeah, prob not going to happen or minimal at best.
With the eye targets still on their helmets then it can be ruled out any chance that the Turtles will be made a traditional height.

Ways to improve the Turtles:
- Make then slimmer, less bulky and shorter. They won't be changed too much but maybe we can see an improvement.
- Remove all the human clothes or objects on them. No sunglasses, do-rags, human shorts, any of that nonsense.
- No bullet-proof garbage. They're ninja's not 4 Hulks.
- Get rid of those god awful nostrils or tone them down so we don't notice them. Whoever thought giving the Turtles noses was a good thing needs to be fired and never work in Hollywood ever again. Give them nose jobs, PLEASE.
Lastly I'm sure Shredder will get new armor. This is a new casted Shredder, maybe we can see him in a more traditional design compared to the first movie.

I'm certain they'll be tweaked, but not overhauled. Characters between sequels in films like these always get their designs adjusted, because filmmakers always feel they can improve what was done before. I'm expecting the same as a lot of people, which are smaller, slimmer Turtles (not dramatically smaller, but noticeable), new and less busy accessories, and some minor facial tweaks. That's about it.
TMNT is cooler than MOTU
05-02-2015, 09:04 PM
-Slim them down and shorten them so the tallest is only about 6 ft.
-Less clothes/accessories. I don't mind them wearing more than a belt and some knee/elbow pads to show off their personality, but the designs were way too busy.
-Dehumanize their facial features.

2. That's not even Shredder, though. That's Shredatron. The whole point of Shredder's armor is that it's defensive, but it's light enough so that he can move around and take the offensive side. That armor makes no sense. You wouldn't be able to move in that damned thing.

It's perfectly doable to make something very much like pizza, but without all the grease. It's also possible for Splinter to put them on a more turtley, Ninja-esque diet of mostly veggies. All part of the training, my sons......
Which will take down some of the bulk, but don't losing body fat doesn't turn Mr. Olympia into Bruce Lee. They also need to quit the juice.
Don't expect them to get much shorter.
Movies such as this one aren't just for boys anymore, and female viewers would be HIGHLY offended by a 4 1/2 foot Michelangelo making the moves on April.
Which is also why Peter Jackson's films VERY loosely based on The Hobbit had to turn Thorin (the Dwarf) into The Second Coming of Aragorn Heartthrob.
The vast array of accessories doesn't bother me too much, I guess it's their version of the color/letter identification used in the original cartoon.
Bulletproof shells sorta make sense, first of all, it gives them a chance against today's fairly heavily armed street gangs - today's police are basically a paramilitary unit precisely because of this - and second, some aquatic turtles have shells that can withstand shark bites. If a snapping turtle's shell can stop a shark's jaws, a mutant turtle shell might stop a bullet.

We shouldn't expect any sort of radical change. We'll see some tweaks (slight height and build change; Also, they'll probably lose the clothes and armor in favor of their traditional pads and straps), but that's it.
Oh, and we'll probably see the plastron/shell design tweaked, so its a cleaner look, and doesn't look like their hiding huge johnsons under those improvised loin cloths.

the still have redesigns between movies at times even characters who didnt need to have a redesign explained
ok how about...the hybrid wolf from underworld...humanoid creature different design in each film
or just straight up actor changes
Rachel Dawes- kaite holmes and Maggie gylienhaal place the same exact character
Rhodey- terrence howard and don cheadle again same character
so a design change would maybe be a bit shocker but it happenes

They absolutely need to change them. If they looked good. If they actually followed the general outline of what they should look like that has been followed throughout each movie and series it would improve the movie SO damn much.
They don't have to explain it. Just change them. People watching will be like "oh, well that's what they were supposed to look like from the start." And that'd be it.
OR (for you hardcore 2014 schills who think they can't do it without solid reasoning)
All they have to do is take a page out of the orignal series and say their mutations are become unstable or it's causing them to further evolve and then BAM! There's your reasoning and nobody blinks twice at it.

I would've loved to have seen better designs but sadly, that ship has sailed. It would be too inconsistent to change it now. However, they've changed Shredder from an older guy that maybe could've passed for Sack's adoptive father to a young guy that is entirely unconvincing as Sack's adoptive father so what the hell, just change the designs. They're not going for consistency anyway.

There hasn't been any confirmation that the age of the Shredder character has changed. The two actors look to be around the same age. The actor in the first movie wore old age makeup.
With all of the 3D assets already built and post-production pipeline established, I doubt anything major other than details will change in the creature design. I'm guessing gear/clothing changes, at most. Gotta have a reason to sell different toys!

Everything needs a redesign. Seriously, Splinter is one of the most disturbing things ever put on film.
The Turtles should not send shockwaves when they jump on objects. They're ninjas!!!
The thing that makes the turtles perfect is the fact that their design is so simple and perfect. Overly designing them (like what was done in the PD movie) is the biggest design mistake ever.
Shredder, where do you even begin? I seriously would love to see him keep shaking his arms down with more , and more, and more, and more blades until he was nothing but a highway of knives for New Yorkers to get around on.

agreed. in the original live action trilogy, their general appearance changed for each film, and they did zero to explain it. audiences just kinda accepted that their look changed because of aesthetic/design choices, and thats that.
it would be funny if they did change their appearance, and upon seeing them, April said something quick like, "...you guys look different." and Mikey responds, "Really? Hard to tell because we see each other every day" and then they move on.

My thought on it isn't even in why or how to explain it or not, and more to do with whether or not it's really advisable to screw with the models this late in the game. I'm no expert on character modeling, rigging, textureing, etc. (my hands have generally been in object and environmental models), but a lot goes into that.
I do still wish they'd at least cut down on the mass of the shells however. Cripe, they're originally sliders, no need for the shells to be quite that overbearing.
I think I already posted on this thread but I'm not certain anywho I do think the turtles should get a slight re-design. The 2014 turtles actually grew on me from absolutely hating them to "they kind of work", and they do in the context of the movie, but there's still something about them that is really odd and it might just be the nostrils but yeah some small changes here and there and they would be great. I hated their huge size at first but it worked in the context of the movie so I don't want them to be small now, let's save that for a reboot.

Just 1 look at a book......no, wait, it's 2015 - make that a googled website - explaining what a ninja really is would tell them that being super-tall or super-huge are NOT helpful.
Make them about 4 1/2-5 foot, with a physique like Bruce Lee - plus some bulk to account for turtle DNA - and you're golden.

While i would love for them to shrink the turtles, to do so now would be too dramatic a change - minor comestic changes definetly NEED to be made, but those are easier to explain, or even juat dismiss outright. Shame bc smaller less bulky turtles would have been amazing and lent itself to much more compelling fight sequences.

It's the most fair compromise. It's doesn't look drastically different from the last film's designs (though not as hulkish), but its much closer to what we all expected the first time around.
Something like this is the easiest way to retcon/revamp their looks, without it looking too far out of continuity with the last film. Though they are looking to distance themselves pretty far from that.

Love this design, as long as the other three don't look as fierce as Raph there. I think if they remove all of the junk on the first designs, it will go along way to bringing them back to something resembling turtles. I swear the film makers must have gotten obsessed with the Turtles looking too real and the implications of that, that they went overboard in covering their "junk" with junk.
I wasn't a big fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Tortoises either. They looked more like tortoises than turtles to me. Actually they remind me of their hulking mutated forms in the red sky season. They should probably be shorter than April O'Neil. Similar to how they were in the 1987 cartoon. A lot of these other series aside from the 2012 depict the TMNT taller. I mean they are the TEEANGE Mutant Ninja Turtles and aren't adults.
The noses were kind of odd. Their faces looked like brussle sprouts.

Honestly, I don't have that much of a problem with the height. It's more or less how BIG they look. Donnie's body, in my opinion, looked the best out of the Turtles.
Gear: Raph's looks fine. It's just cloth, so I've got nothing against it. Leo needs to tone it down a little bit, Mikey needs that godforsaken sweater off of him, and Donnie needs to just not. Get those glasses off and make him look less like a ghostbuster.
Faces: Leo, Mikey, and Raph's faces are fine for me, but it's Mikey who really gets under my skin. Whenever he smiles, his face stretches and it looks so creepy.

To be fair, the only truly unnecessary piece on Leo (not that I even mind it) is his makeshift chest armor, that he surely must have gone with for purely aesthetic reasons since there is no way in heck that should even hold up in a fight bad enough that being bullet proof is an asset. :trazz: (Not to mention, I don't care how tough your skin is, the string that holds it together is just asking for painful rope burn. And marks do show up on him in the snow scene... Ouch. :ohwell:)
The rest is just armor to help protect the fleshy parts. Though I do have to wonder how he doesn't tear the hell out of those bare knees. :trazz:

The Animatronic are only used for closeups, Which allows the actors to interact with the creatures, The CGI is only used for scenes that are impossible to create from a practical standpoint.
The problem is, Hollywood wants things cheaper and faster, Which is why they go with CGI all the time.
This is the very reason why Rick Baker is retiring from the business.

Agreed with most of this. I too didn't mind the height. It was just their mass! I could see Raph being the biggest, but not as big as he was in this movie. Like you said, body wise, Donnie had the best overall look, and the size that Leo and Mikey were, would have been fine for Raph. Also agree, that Mikey's face was just too hideous. I wasn't too keen on Raph's face either but it still was far better than Mikey's. Leo had the best face, and I wished they would have stayed with that general look. He had nostrils, but they weren't protruding and disgusting like Mikey's was.

Hated the writing, acting from some folks, definitely HATED the score by Brian Tyler, but liked the designs (with the exception of the excessive accessories).
Grown fond of the designs. Just wished they got rid of a lot of the accessories. The lips could be toned down more. And the CG could've looked more real at times. Oh, the cinematography looked cheesy too.

I don't think we're getting new "designs" in terms of the facial features. However, I do believe most of their gear should be stripped. Raph's I don't mind because it's basically just cloth, Leo's fits him, but he should have those shoulder pads taken off and the bamboo-things on his chest, Mikey... take off that godawful sweatshirt, and Donnie, most people say he has too much, but I think it's just that thing on his back + the glasses.

AT LEAST get the anatomical turtle structure right. They aren't monsters. Nature has done your job! They aren't mythical creatures. Eye sore designs for a full movie is stomach churning.

Of course, I'd like them too change things a bit, maybe improve their faces or make them a bit slimmer (they can say that Turtles quit steroids), but it's unlikely. Afterall, they had enough stupidity to use those designs in the first place.
Besides: continuity.
Though, I'd say, the possibility of them change Trurtles designs, depends on how much they'll change Shredder, if it is the same character in the second movie as in the first one. So, maybe there is still hope.

Haha the designs will remain similar I'm sure but hopefully the playmates will produce better toys this time cause the first movie ones were completely awful not only design-wise but quality wise. These are the changes that need to be made:
- Slim the the Turtles down, they're just too bulky and big, they're suppose to be fricking Ninjas!
- Take a couple of inches off the Turtles... because again, they're suppose to be Ninjas, and the Turtles have mostly always been smaller than humans. But at least make them the size of the actual actors playing them.
- Remove some of their gear [i.e Donatello's proton pack, glasses Mikey's chain, Leo's bamboo armor and shoulder pads.] And give them the classic belts, elbow pads and knee pads.
- Tone down the human-esque features on the turtles just a little bit like the lips and smile/facial lines.
Basically this:

I'd rather they spent less time redesigning the turtles and put more effort into writing a great story. The interpretation of their appearance is fine for what it is, but only if they really shore up the plot.
Of course, many of the problems from the last one were due to supposed fans raging that Michael Bay would dare to put aliens in a TMNT movie, but it obviously had faults of its own, too.

I don't think they should be changed. I feel character appearances need to stay consistent within their specific definitions. Once you start with a look, you should end with that look...which is a shame because the turtles appearance in this movie look as though the creators were just trying too hard.
I can see quieting down their accessories. That would be a logical change in their "world". Maybe they found that it all just got in the way, so they dump a bunch of weight to do their job better. But changing their physical appearance for the sequel is one movie too late. Slimming them down and changing their human features should have been done before the first movie hit the screen, but they kept it and now I feel like they should finish with it.
I could get used to the human features, to be honest. On Leonardo and Donatello, they look acceptable and in the realm of possibilities for a character like that. Raph and Mike's appearances are more monstrous. I look at Mike and I can't help but wonder how they approved his design when his features are so out of proportion. Same page, different chapter with Raphael. Raphael just looks like a beast. Plain and simple. He's ugly as sin (along with Mike) and shows little to no relation to the other character designs. There is a way to stay consistent within the characters yet give them original features without overdoing it. The only thing that saves Mike and Raph for me are their eyes.
But I feel its too late to change their physical attributes. It still shocks me to see that their size and Raph and Mike's designs were approved. Nicknacks can be removed but unless they employ a cosmetic surgeon for the second movie, theres no going back on their features.

Well... aliens, no problem, it's always been done. The previous idea of making the Turtles aliens however sucks. (imo)
Maybe it's me, but there's something a bit heartbreaking about taking them away from being fellow Earthlings (and away from each other for gods sake). I will give blue door credit that it had more detail, etc to it's writing, but that ending just kills you and personally is not the right feeling to close it with if you're aiming to end it with an emotional impact.

Considering those two always come up first and second in just about every "favorite Turtle" poll, it's a wonder they didn't have fans involved in the design process that stepped back and went "OH, HELL NO." (Edit: Or maybe they did, just not people who had any power to do anything about it.)
'Course... I suppose most Bay-type summer blockbuster sort of films inherently aim for being as macho as possible and it would seem that being appealing (except for female roles) is a no-no anymore to a particular sort in Hollywood. Load it up with cars, monstrous characters, actress butt...
Anyhow... just freshen up their clothes/gear, lessen it where need be, and just try to get their "good side" as much as possible. Surely there is one? lol ...if angles are right and the lighting people are talented and focused.

I completely, vehemently disagree that there's been enough, or "more than enough" negativity regarding these movies. There's ample sign already that the new movie might be even WORSE than the last one, just from a different direction. It might be one or two shades better, too, but in that unlikely event, a couple chocolate sprinkles on a turd doesn't make it suddenly palatable, either.
They did not a single thing right the first time out. A rare 100% Failure on every single level from conception to execution. One of THE worst things I've ever seen, and I've sat through some nuclear garbage in my day, but few things that were so blatantly, defiantly, unashamedly done for the quick buck, with such an overt "Screw what the nerds think, they only carried this property for 30 years, f*** 'em, they'll be happy so long as we get the names right" kind of attitude behind it. So arrogant, elitist, and cynical on the part of Hollywood, and the sad thing is, a ton of people thank them for it, and apply those terms erroneously to those who merely have a higher standard for both films and this particular franchise.
It takes a very special type of Selective Viewing to look at these things and NOT see all the things wrong with it all. You completely have to just be in love with the brand itself and willing to forgive anything by that point. And I'm sorry, but I don't love anything on this Earth that much.
I, for one, say there's not anywhere near enough "Negativity" until the TMNT film projects are finally given to someone who's going to give a sh*t about making more than a f*cking toy commercial for attention-deficient 3rd graders.
I'm half-over the designs by now. I mean, no, I'm not, they're awful, but they're just a symptom of the disease. They could look like the characters we know, but everything else would still be broken. It's all a mess. Yes, the Turtles should be redesigned. Yes, the movie should be written and directed and produced by different people. Yes, the entire thing should just be burnt to ashes and given to someone who knows what they're doing with it. That's the thing, they were never aliens. Bay is on record saying they have an alien "origin" which he later confirmed meant the ooze (evidence http://news.moviefone.com/2013/04/26/michael-bay-pain-and-gain-interview/) If you were still complaining about it after that, you're one of three things:
1) Desperately looking for a reason to hate Michael Bay
2) Someone who doesn't know the actual origin of the TMNT
3) Someone who jumped to a conclusion without all the facts, and didn't bother to confirm later.
I say supposed fans because it seems like fans wouldn't fall into any of those categories. But obviously enough people complained that they removed the utrom altogether, caved and split shredder from Sachs, and the result was a dramatically weakened movie.
If people can complain about an origin story that is in line with the actual origin story, I'm going to give their fandom an asterisk...

The arrogance of an uninformed mind...
Read the original leaked script. They were to be aliens from another planet in Dimension X made up of humanoid turtle warriors. Krang did some 'ol genocidal sh*t to the species, but one set of parents had their children sent to earth in the care of a guardian from another alien race (Splinter) who would train them for vengeance's sake. They even return to their homeworld at the end so as to show those who remain how to fight.
There was never any plan for Utroms. Sachs being Shredder is unrelated to this altogether. Originally Shredder was a military figure "Colonel Schrader" who too was an alien, one that could shoot spikes out of its flesh... :trolleye:

I live in a world without "lines", my son. Sometimes it gets weird momentarily. Then it evens out. Circle of Life!
And yeah... there have been entire timelines made by people who care way more than I do that definitively show conflicting, contradictory statements made by Bay and Co. as far as to how far along in the development the Turtles and Splinter were going to be aliens. They definitely were all going to be aliens at one point very early on and there's absolutely no disputing that. What's up to question is exactly how far along they were still going with the aliens idea before they scrapped it. I don't have time to look it up, but it's all out there and been discussed. But by all signs they stuck with the idea way, way longer than they should have, and that at one point they flat-out lied about it and said they had changed it when they hadn't yet. They lied about that, and about a LOT of things. "There will be pizza" was pretty much the only thing they said during the entire pre-production through release date that WASN'T a total, blatant lie.
Which should kind of tell you something whether you like the finished product of a movie or not. I mean, do you regularly give your money to people who boldly, repeatedly lie to your face and call you ignorant? Seems rather silly to me. Disregard the movie itself for a second; these people are hucksters and con artists. I really, really don't like that. There's "misdirection" and then there's, "Whatever, they don't know, they're stupid". It's easy to see which approach they take. It annoys me.

As others have said the leaked script confirmed their intention was that the turtles were supposed to be aliens.
Now you might counter that with Bay's own statement that script was from before he was involved. Putting aside for a moment what an awfully big coincidence it would be for Bay to be misunderstood when he publicly stated they would be aliens when he didn't mean it literally when there's a script by Nemec and Applebaum that has the turtles as alien beings. Let's also put aside that script was dated after he signed to produce also, it was confirmed at the TMNT section at Paramount's comic con panel that they'd originally meant them to be aliens.
I'm not going to take a dig at you for not knowing this but I would suggest that if you're going to criticize people for jumping to conclusions without confirming all the facts you should do so yourself.
I say supposed fans because it seems like fans wouldn't fall into any of those categories. But obviously enough people complained that they removed the utrom altogether, caved and split shredder from Sachs, and the result was a dramatically weakened movie.
The Utroms were never meant to be in the movie.
Also can we stop with the whole idea that the re-shoots to "please the fans" are why the movie was terrible. Firstly there are many problems with the story and characters unrelated to the Shredder and Sachs. Secondly it's been confirmed by Danny Woodburn that the story of the movie in it's final form is same as the one he shot save for the Shredder/Sachs separation.
Bay confirmed himself in an interview with variety that he made the decision to have a lot of the movie re-written and re-shot after he saw Liebesman's first cut and thought it was "too mature". Certainly doesn't sound like he was doing it to please us "supposed fans".
Since they were changing everything anyway I'm somewhat glad they threw us a bone on the Shredder/Sachs issue it didn't seem to impact the movie much regardless of what myths invent to excuse it. It's also more than possible it wasn't for us but rather to temper the negative press which focused on the white washing of the character.
If people can complain about an origin story that is in line with the actual origin story, I'm going to give their fandom an asterisk...
How was the origin from the Blue Door script or the one we got really inline with the actual origin story?
Did you really want alien turtles being hunted by a military General Shredder that is secretly a spiky yellow skinned alien himself because that's what we would have got if they'd been allowed.

The Turtles straight up find that they are from a different world of other people who look like them; the four of them were sent/taken to Earth as babies to protect them (because they had a special destiny - for some reason), with Splinter as their guardian who kept it secret from them, and in the end they have to leave Earth forever, part ways and never to see each other again, to go individually protect four different... what ever it was that was that would keep dimensions from colliding. Mikey even comments about possibly meeting girls from their home world. Yes... I'm sorry, but they were going to be aliens, it was not simply ooze of "alien origin."

And then Bay was all, "Psssshhhhh, DUH! I totally didn't mean THAT, that was like, old junk or whatever! No, we TOTALLY are gonna do the thing with the ooze or whetever, like you said. For reals." But there's like dated documents that disprove that because they were from like right before or right after he said that.
It's a tangled web. No sir, I don't like it.

I like the new designs, The nostrils and everything didn't bother me, Besides, The designs should stay the same, Except maybe they could use less clothing and less accessories, Besides, For continuity sake, They have to look like they did before.
They are currently using a placeholder model for Leo and Raph on the set, And judging from it, They will look the same.
http://meganfoxworld.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/45~6.jpg
And judging from the size of the hand touching the placeholder, it looks like they'll be at least a LITTLE BIT smaller than they were in the last film, and Leo doesn't appear to be wearing any shoulder pads either, so they might have gotten rid of at least SOME of the clothing too.
I think it's worth mentioning that Leo's face seems to have been slightly tweaked also.
I like'em from what I can see on the placeholder.
Someone elsewhere in the forum has determined that that was the same placeholder used when shooting the first movie. Any discrepancies between it and the final CGI was because of design changes between making the placeholder and the CGI model.
It's also entirely possible to use this placeholder and have the CGI look completely different. I'm assuming they use this mostly to get the colors right in CGI.

Well, I guess that's the end of that Placeholder nonsense, lol.
No, but seriously, the Turtles NEED to be smaller this time around.. I mean, how are Raph & Casey going to have their iconic fight scene if Raph is like 7"6' and roided out? Raph could literally snap Casey in half! how are the Foot - Who are actual Ninjas this time around and don't appear to be wielding any guns - going to offer any compelling action sequences if the Turtles can just swat them away like flies? how is a human-sized Shredder going to go up again these Turtles???? Bebop and & Rocksteady are at least going to need to be 10/11 ft tall to pose any kind of threat to these guys.
They NEED to be scaled down a few inches, and I know a lot of people who like how big they are, are trying to use the "continuity" argument. But honestly? NO ONE is going to even give a **** or look twice if they made them a couple inches smaller! no one in the general audience will care! so **** continuity!
And Donnie needs to lose that Ghostbusters backpack.

Do people like it though?
As far as I can tell the people who like the movie's various changes to the franchise most of them seem pretty open that they really like and support most anything TMNT if it was a big production.
If they'd make the exact opposite changes like small, ultra cutesy turtles they'd just as vehemently defend that too so why not change them? The fact that some have become so entrenched now doesn't mean they wont become un-trenched if the sequel goes in a different direction. And hey if the movie doesn't work out they can blame it all on them changing things to "please the fans".

I don't like how big they are, but I'd like to see consistency. Its always been a pet peeve of mine that they change in every movie. The first three movies went from great to awful when it came to designs. Although I dislike how large the turtles are this time around and I'm not a fan of Mike or Raph's appearances, I'd like to see them consistently designed in a way that doesn't make you sit back and wonder if a bus hit them to change their appearance between each movie.

They weren't aliens. No more than Kraang is an alien.
They were from Dimension X. And in their version of Dimension X, there existed a race of turtle beings who were at odds with Kraang, and that is where the Turtles (and Splinter) came from.
It's really not bad for an alternate TMNT origin. In fact, its pretty good. Also, more logical and less convoluted than the origin in the final film.
IMO, the Blue Door script was FAR better than what we got. Had they simply dropped the alternate origin (though it really wasn't bad), did a traditional Shredder (or dropped the Foot and Schrader name, to open it up for the real Foot later), and had them stay on Earth in the conclusion, it would have been a solid take on the turtles.
I'm sad we didn't get that version of the Turtles, whom were crazy acrobatic and did real ninja ****, were even more like the Turtles we know. And had some really great scenes to display that, as well develop them as characters and brothers.
That, as opposed to the never developed, dumbed down, ADD, Hulk Smash versions we did get.
There was alot of potential in that version. And it was thrown away in favor of something generically ****ty, and no better in its execution of the origin. And all because fans bitched about something that wasn't even accurate.

Not being from earth makes them aliens by default. Period.
Also, the movie we got had turtles that do crazy ninja sh*t too, originally, but it was all cut out of the film. All the turtle actors had to be trained excessively with their respective weapons, for the fight scenes they shot that we never saw & never will. Nice, right?
PS: Krang & The Kraang are two very different things.

From another planet that happened to be in another dimension just like Krang.

It's very bad. I mean what we got was bad also but the Blue Door origin was worse albeit marginally.
IMO, the Blue Door script was FAR better than what we got. It really isn't that different a story to what we got. Also I don't think the movie would have (I use this term loosely) worked with the changes you suggest. Also considering that the biggest defense of the movie was "hey at least they got the turtles right" would no longer be valid as certainly the Blue Door turtles didn't act like they should other than maybe Donatello googling a secret government plan. (He's the smart one I guess)
The versions we got were super acrobatic even if it looks odd given their size and proportions which I think is safe to say we'd have gotten regardless.
What development did the turtles have in the Blue Door script? They seemed as equally dumbed down, Hulk smash turtles there as in the final version.
There was alot of potential in that version. And it was thrown away in favor of something generically ****ty, and no better in its execution of the origin. And all because fans bitched about something that wasn't even accurate.
Potential? Sure. Not for a TMNT story. No martial arts, no personal rivalry with Shredder, none of the personalities or story beats which make up the franchise's core. We barely got that in the finished version which sadly seems like a mean tease of anything but as much I loath to stick up for the movie it was better for it...just a little.
This whole idea that's seems to be being pushed now that their original "vision" would have worked if not for the fans is one of the most bizarre things ever. How was it not generic? It was basically like a bad parody of the Bay Transformers movies with turtles.
And yes...the description of the turtles (as well as Splinter and Shredder) as aliens is accurate. What else would you call them?

He does have a point. For example, look at this video:
QCdupkDBC94
They show the before and after of the "It's just a mask" shot, and you get a good look how the markers for the eyeline translate to CGI model. And its pretty on spot, adding alot of inches to Noel's height (he's about the same height as Megan IRL).
So, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that the lowered eyelines mean the turtles will be much closer to the actors' actual heights.
Something else to note on the new mocap suits are the lines on the suit. They are unlike the lines on the traditional plastrons. And given how messy and problematic the ones in the 2014 designs were, we may see those and the shell tweaked as well. And those lines, are likely for motion/bend reference.
IndigoErth
10-06-2015, 01:56 PM
Maybe. I'm not personally sure if those 'ping pong balls' are actually used as reference points for the models (anyone know?), or if - as I'm more apt to assume - they are intended more as reference for the human actors who are interacting with them and there for line of sight.
So, maybe they made them shorter. But if it's actually reference for the other actors, they also might have simply decided they needed to adjust the line of sight of Fox, etc. after they were able to see the first film rendered out. So I'm not getting my hopes up too much that they made them shorter.

Raphael:
Remove those sunglasses on Raphaels head.
Like why are they there all the time and why dont they fall off during the battle? Him being bigger and bulkier with a different worn bandana is cool enough. The sunglasses on his bandana are overkill and make me take his look less serious (in a bad way).
Leonardo:
Fine.
Michaelangelo:
Remove the sunglasses that hang on his neck.
Same reason of taking him less serious as with Raphael.
Why would you have those hang around your neck as a ninja in battle anyway.
I dont mind that other necklace. It gives a bit of a hawai surfer vibe that fits him.
Donatello:
Personally I like him having glasses.
He has to much technostuff on his back though. Seems very impractical while fighting and it looks to me that its to easy to break by enemies.
The fact that he takes techno stuff with him is fine though.
Just tune the size he carries on his back down a bit or make it more practical for battle somehow.
The turtles:
I dont mind them being a bit hulky.
They are turtles after all, with a big shell on their back and such.
In most incarnations, they have muscles, so that I didnt mind.
Seems difficult to wear a big turtle shell if you are some tiny skinny dude :P.
I welcome it that they wear pants.
Keep those.

They did redesign them, well, at least their clothes. But I get your point, and I think that could be pretty grotesque.

I'm aware of the clothes but I mean their physical design. What I had in mind is that say, a sequel picks up a year or two after the previous film. April or Casey make a comment about how the Turtles look so different compared to when they last met them. Donnie goes into a techno-babble about how the mutagen in their body is still causing them mutate and change physically much like how they age. Quick, to the point, and you have more classic designs since everybody loves to bitch about these designs.

This would be totally stupid. They won't completly change the designs of their main characters because of people tastes. I think the clothes are the only element they will change.

...That.. That looks AWESOME!
WHY THE HELL COULDN'T THEY HAVE GONE WITH SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!
THE FACE IS GREAT.
THE BODY IS LEAN.
IT LOOKS LIKE A TEENAGER.
GOD****INGDAMNIT

The turtles look a little bit slimmer, but Donnie still looks ridiculous with those glasses and those suspenders. Ugh! He is the genius of the bunch, not a mutated version of Steve Urkel from Family Matters. Donnie is my favourite turtle.

Keep those.
It's MICHELANGELO, not longer michaelangelo. Sorry for the caps.

The sunglasses never made sense. They were just there to try and make Raph and Mike look cool. Why would mutants who never go out in the sunlight own sunglasses?
