I think we live in an era where people are more selfish. They feel entitled to have everything in their possession. And when they don't get it, they criticize and shame other people besides themselves for it. If its not that, they just want attention for themselves, and not care about anyone else. And if its still not that, they want to force their opinions and beliefs on everyone else. They want to be morally superior. I really hate today's society.

Does anyone else feel that way?

Why do people act like this is some new concept? Its been like this since the dawn of mankind.

People really think the 50's-90's are any different than now? The entire span of human history is just people killing each other to gain more land and more power. What do you think war is about?

With the Instagrams, Facebooks and Twitters of the internet and the instant gratification of likes and comments it's no surprise that it's become way worse these days than it ever has been. It has always been like that but these factors have kind of elevated that self centered and selfish part of people and brought it out more.

Gotta blame trains/cars/planes - we got there faster; tv remotes - didn't have to get up; microwaves - food was ready quicker; elevators - no more walking up the stairs, etc etc etc. Always been out to make everything more of a convenience.

Now it's like "Omg the webpage is taking eight seconds to load, I can not deal with this!"

Seriously, even the microwave often takes too long now, right? lol We are a very lazy species. Even the least lazy isn't about to do everything the hard way.

But I'd have to say, yes, it's noticeably gotten worse in the last couple of decades and it doesn't help that you've got these kids now that were born right into having it all "right now," so it's like they're automatic setting. Everything is sooner, faster, hyped up. Just look at how slow paced some/many older cartoons seem now compared to many of today.

Patience isn't encouraged enough anymore. It's all just NOW, or people are mad they had to wait and/or work for it.

This is similar to what I was going to say too actually. Since mankind started he's always been looking out for number one. It's survival. Obviously there's a difference between survival and being irrational about always getting your way all the time. The latter's unavoidable in society no matter where you go, no matter what generation you're in. Like Penny said, it's just life.

PK, try looking at it as a challenge if it frustrates you personally. Life is full of lessons; and when dealing with difficult people you may be surprised to what you learn about them and yourself. I'm still learning to do this myself. I deal with buttmunches on a regular basis at work. Life is a journey though! When you find yourself in a rut, that's okay but try not to let yourself get stuck for too long!

But... but humanity has always been this way.

It's just more noticeable since we can observe it more: TV, social media, videos, etc. give us a look at a far wider range of people than ever before.

You do realize that this isn't special to this current generation, and that we as people are selfish creatures anyway, right? This can apply to every generation, but with each passing generation, it's probably getting worse. I'm sure our parents complained about our generation and their parents before them and their parents before them, etc.

I would say our generations (Generation X and generations after) are more self-absorbed due to two particular factors:

1) The increasing speed of technology. With so much information at our fingertips, it unknowingly aids in immediate gratification for things that would normally take a longer time. Sending emails (rather than using regular mail), scanning documents (rather than mailing them in a package), purchasing products online (rather than going to the store or restaurant), and gathering information from the other side of the globe (due to the internet). This accustomed expectation in parts of our society can inappropriately be placed on people or in fulfilling goals/tasks that normally take a much longer time to develop.

2) Our generations (thankfully) haven't experienced the brutality and chaos of generations past, which traditionally confronts humanity with their own mortality in a ruthless manner. Our grandparents (the "Greatest Generation") experienced the Great Depression & the Dust Bowl (with up to 25% unemployment in the U.S.) and World War II (60-85 million killed), and our parents ("Baby Boomers") experienced the tumultuous 60s & 70s (with life-altering sacrificial actions against racism, sexism, military drafting) and the Cold War (with the Korean War [1.2 million] and Vietnam War [1.5-3.6 million]). (The numbers are the full death tolls for all belligerent sides, plus civilians.) If one compares the experience of the more recent generations, our more sheltered experiences pale in comparison to our parents and grandparents, who encountered the brutality of life in a more sudden and aggressive way than we have experienced.

So since our generations (from a societal perspective, not individual perspective) are not used to patience (because of faster technology that surrounds us), and relatively haven't experienced the immense hardship that our parents or grandparents endured (which made them to mature quicker), are a couple reasons as to why older generations feel that we are more self-absorbed. ...At least what I'm thinking... :ohwell:

...But if we are talking about why human nature is selfish, well that's always been there.

Our generation experienced 9/11 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. To say our generation doesn't know the brutality of war like past gens isn't exactly true. Sure, World War II has never happened again and we're not under the fear of nuclear strikes, but we've experienced a terrorist attack on our homeland.

9/11 was a shock of course. But our generation sure hasn't experienced the mass causalities of war like our parents and grandparents did (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_casualties_of_war#Wars_rank ed_by_total_number_of_U.S._military_deaths), especially since they (and not us) experienced military drafts.

U.S. military causalities (from Wikipedia):

War on Terror (2001-Present): 6,717, Deaths/day: 1.57

Korean War (1950-1953): 54,246, Deaths/day: 45
Vietnam War (1961-1975): 58,209, Deaths/day: 11

World War II (1941-1945): 405,399, Deaths/day: 297

That's a nice summation. People have been tricked and deluded by family and friends into thinking they are special, they are unique, the world owes them a living and respect, and you don't have to earn it. And then shows such as America's Got Talent (and our equivalent shows here), with its acerbic put-downs, reveals the horrible truth to them, they are no better (and often worse) than everyone else, and they can't take it.

The biggest sin of generation Naught thus far that they believe they're any different that the ones that came before them. We've seen technological advancement at a breakneck pace before. We've seen social upheaval before. We've seen bigotry before.

Are the challenges different? Yes, of course. But the tropes are the same, and they only way to break the cycle is to get out of the status quo.

We have the greatest communication tool our species has created to date, and we use it to make people feel bad about themselves. And then pretend that they are the problem when they call us out for being douchebags.

We were raised by parasitic marketing, simplistic moralizing, half-baked social theories, and an experimental education system. We inherited a civilization that our parents' generation pulled apart, without knowing how to put it back together again. Now there are more of us than ever before, fighting over limited resources and paying into a system that will fall apart unless the population continues to grow exponentially. Maybe we're self obsessed, or maybe we're just a bunch of monkeys fighting over the last banana on the tree.

Don't - you're no worse than any other group of people born between two arbitrary dates. The more I think about it, the more annoyed I get at the concept of generations. It's not a tangible reality; just another side effect of our need to mentally simplify the world, to fool ourselves into thinking we understand it.

You know, I just hate the negative picture of my generation and feel ashamed being part of it. Seeing that generosity and private life slowly start to fade. Experiencing that those things what used to be important and expected in my childhood will lose their meaning. Seeing people putting their problems, everyday moments on social media. Yes, I find it important to express our feelings whether it's maths, literature etc. and talk about problems. I deal with issues, too. However... I feel like quality just lowered and people wants to document every little moment of their life. It's not a virtue to create anymore. It's just cool if you use swearing, show somethign erotic because that's what folks want. I'm subscribed to some people on Youtube who became media prostitutes because in that way they just gain more followers.

Maybe you're right. Maybe I should stop blaming myself for the thing I'm not responsible for and try to do the best I can, myself. Just one thing bugs me. I would like to be a mother one day and sometimes I'm afraid if I ever should give born to a child in this era.

Well, on a positive note, life in general is easier now than it ever has been - Not for everyone, but on average.

I read somewhere that our brains change relative to our surroundings and circumstances, to sort of calibrate the triggers for our emotional responses. If your life is fairly uneventful, you will respond to the threat of losing internet connectivity the same way a caveman would to an approaching tornado.

Because of this, the world will always feel hostile as we are wired to respond to it that way. It is probably not as bad as we think it is.
