View Full Version : Why are some people hesitant of, or even outright hate, Tumblr?

I really don't understand why some people consider Tumblr a bad website/blog. Tumblr has a different variety of people who are all special in one way or another. Generally, I think Tumblr has a very nice environment, so I don't really understand the hate. Can someone give me a valid reason why they dislike/hate/are weary of Tumblr? I would like to see some feedback.

Tumblr is fine as a website, it's just overrun with drama queens who look for problems where there are none.

Those people just don't know how to enjoy life (yes tumblr is one aspect of it, a modern one at that).
Just unfollow those people you don't like and you should be fine. :tcool:

Drama. Special pronouns. Otherkin. People who try to be the "most" special. Crabs in a bucket. People with limited life experience who bite at people who actually do live in the real world.
Take that stuff away and it might be a good site.

People hate Tumblr because:
It's an echo chamber
They have ruined the term "trigger warning"
Their tagging habits. "negative tw", "hands tw", tagging selfies or drawings of ****ing characters as "scopophobia" THAT ISN'T WHAT SCOPOPHOBIA IS YOU ****ING IDIOTS
Tucutes. I ****ing hate tucutes. [People who think being trans is a feel u can feel with ur feels and isn't due to debilitating mental disconnect between what the mind thinks the body should look and how the body actually looks; it's a ****ing medical condition]
A few years back they had a bunch of pro-anaorexia blogs. Ew.
Their attitudes toward mental illness
"Don't follow me if"
People that think being gay or trans is a choice and that if you CHOOSE to be cis and het you're awful
Tumblr asexuals that don't know what being asexual actually means
"Demisexual" which was a term made up by some kid on a forum
Trans-ethnic and trans-fat
To say nothing of their otherkin culture there. Actual kids that eat dog food because they claim to be dog-kin.
Oh and Tucutes. The term tucute was even coined by some chick that thinks cis people are witches and being trans is some sort of Madoka RP thing
I have some ****ing war stories.

Honestly, to me it's just like any other social site. There's good stuff there, there's bad stuff, there's cool people, there's douchey people. It's a mixed bag - I just stick with the content and people I enjoy and steer clear of the content and people that I don't. The only people I actually talk to on Tumblr are all TMNT fans so I'm not really exposed to any more high-level douchery than I would be, say... here in the 'drome. :trazz:

A friend of mine got, for around two months attacked constantly by some sad poly-otherkin (one of the kin was Bosimer, which is an elf race in a video game:lol:) simply because my friend expressed her opinion on snowflake pronouns and that they/them was far better since it's an actual pronoun.

I use Tumblr fairly often and rarely encounter anything that annoys me. I basically only use it for art, fan art, and comics stuff. A lot of artists, animators, and web comic creators exclusively use Tumblr to display their work. That's why I use it.

This. Tumblr's reputation is that of a collection of "special snowflakes" who can be triggered by the slightest of things and have a special pronoun to show just how special they are. And oh gooodness "Headmates"....just because you really like Loki from Avengers doesn't mean he's part of your multiple personalities.

I actually found tumblr confusing to navigate at first. Most of it is just people reblogging pictures of something, but if they don't tag their posts they all get lost and jumbled together.
Its also rather hard to actually communicate and have a discussion like a forum. You post a reply to something and you have no idea if anyone will ever read it. Its not like a forum.

Yeah, I don't understand how/why people use it for socializing. It's good to keep tabs on artists you like but the interactivity of it all is lacking, to me.

Agree with finding it confusing. I have an account, but rarely use it. Someone gave me an attitude over something once and I was so annoyed wondering how you just simply reply directly to the damn person. lol Mostly I just... look at stuff.
If there is that much "specialness" infesting it... I swear, I've never been the trolling sort, but there is a tiny part of me that would be almost just a little curious to see how quickly it goes up in flames... :P

You can also PM and leave comment on people's posts without reposting if the OP has set it that way (basically the same as Facebook). I dunno, I find it a good fit for me - even if you don't want to talk to anyone, there are still lots of pictures and articles and cool stuff to read/enjoy and post for your own enjoyment. I think of it as a scrapbook with an option to talk to people.
I'm also very anal about tagging my own stuff so I can go back and find it again when I need to.

I saw a Tumblr once of a person who claimed to be a transpokemon and used special pronouns, which were changed daily. If you didn't use their preferred pronoun, no matter how innocently you came upon their blog or how uninitiated you were in the ways of Tumblr, they pitched fits and their followers would all swoop in and reblog about how insensitive the poor sap was. They once told an 11 year old to kill herself because she didn't use the preferred pronoun "sprout" when she commented on a drawing.
Also, stuff like what Cure posted is why alot of "non-special snowflakes" avoid Tumblr like the plague.

I know nothing about Tumblr, but reading this stuff reminds me of this one time my wife got sniped at on FB by some obsessive Xena fans. She's like, the biggest Xena fan ever, so naturally when she joined FB she thought joining a Xena-based discussion page would be a great idea. Please forgive her naivety. Anyways, apparently some super-militant lesbians ran the group, and most of the conversations turned into the lesbian fans projecting their own interpretation into the material - which is fine - and attacking anyone who wasn't 100% in agreement - which is Not Fine.
So anyways, my wife tried to make a point about how what's great about that show is that a lot of things are IMPLIED but not stated outright, so people can enjoy the show whether they're gay or straight or whatever. OHHHHH BOY. She got every single comment you can imagine, from "straight people can't GET Xena, they can't UNDERSTAND it," to "Stop trying to take OUR show away from us," to "you don't belong in OUR fandom", to "kill yourself". I mean, she's probably been watching that show longer than some of those people have been cognizant or even born yet. But because she's straight, has zero problem with gay people but makes a choice NOT to watch her favorite show as being overtly lesbian-themed, and suddenly she's an insensitive, horrible, awful person who isn't properly equipped to watch her favorite TV show. Then they blocked her from the group, which by that point was a gift.

People are seriously losing touch...Nothing wrong with a little fantasy, daydreaming, and whatnot, but taking that second foot out of reality and taking offense to people not behaving "properly" in a way that caters to your fantasy... Wtf, humanity, just wtf.
We're just self-destructing as a species, aren't we. Wars, selfishness, minds melting and losing touch with realty...
Turtles - I've seen one out there who's seems to have some kind of fantasy like that. Not even going to say where because in the end it's their own business, if they want to live in some fantasy world, well it's their own life, and I think they just want attention anyhow so I'll just leave out any identifying details, but the stuff they say... wtf. I'm sure many who frequent the unnamed site have probably run across this one. Annoying for certain reasons, though in a way it's almost become a guilty pleasure at this point to see what they come up with next.

Shippers always amuse me in general, because of how angry or defensive they get if you don't like the same pairing in a show that you do. Especially if they like a pairing that was "killed off" because the characters got together with someone else, they go ballistic.

Shipping wars totally existed pre-Tumblr. Shippers and fangirls have been hanging out on DA forever and back in Ye Olde Internet days, there used to be fansites set up just for specific ships which would feature artwork and fanfic only of the One True Pairing. Deviations from the OTP on those sites were not allowed. It's not a new thing and IMO, no sillier/stranger than sports fans having a favorite team and disliking other teams. They're both pretty much the same thing, one's just seen as more socially acceptable than the other.

I always thought Tumblr was for pictures. I don't use it nor do I have an account there, but sometimes when people link to things, like pictures, it's on Tumblr. I didn't really know it was like a social media site. The only social media site I actually truly use is Facebook to keep in touch with my folks stateside. I use the PM function a lot with friends/family back home and here in Japan. Cheaper than text messaging and stuff.
Getting down to it, I can't get into many media sites at all and usually have no idea what most people are talking about. There's some other thing that was mentioned and I had no idea what it was. Something called Instant something. I forgot, but seems many people use it.
I just hang on message boards....like this one. lol Others I'm a member of, but I usually visit like every so many weeks. lol
So yeah, Facebook and message boards I frequent and of course Youtube.I think tumblr is where all the obsessive fanboys/girls of a particular series hang out now. It used to be forums or fan groups, then deviantart and fanfiction.net, but I guess now its easier for them to all hang around tumblr.

Don't get me started on the yaoi fangirls.Shipping junk existed before Tumblr, though. How long has Tumblr been around? I've been a member on the Chamber of Secrets forum for at least 10 or 11 years (probably...I haven't frequented the site regularly since the 7th Harry Potter book was put out years ago). I know that book 5 was about to be released and I just wanted a place to talk about it and found that forum. Anyway, round about that time, they had the "Love Threads" so that people could discuss pairings and whatnot. The main ships debated were Harry x Hermione/Ron x Hermione/Harry x Ginny, etc. It got so bad, they had to ban users and even locked the threads forbidding anyone to start up any shipping discussion. Some of the users were okay. They attacked the posts or debated...you know, like you're supposed to, but others broke the rule of attacking the posters or either character bashing (usually Ron or Ginny). On that board, character bashing was (or still is) against the rules. For example, claiming something negative about a character that's not actually true and just your personal bias would be against the rules. "Ron is too stupid for Hermione!" "Hermione ruined Harry's chances with Cho because she gave him bad advice....on purpose and caused them to break up!" That argument about Hermione ruining Harry's date on purpose always bugged me since it wasn't true...but never mind that. The stupid Ron one too when he clearly wasn't. Lazy in school =/= stupid and Harry's school marks were about the same as Ron's and Harry actually picked his classes based on what Ron picked....but never mind.
So yeah, some posters continuously broke the rule because they were so vehement about their ship, but to try and prove their points, they would resort to bashing the competition or ignoring canon. I'll go back to that Hermione ruined Harry's date example and since it's pretty off-topic, I'll use a spoiler tag...
So, on Valentine's Day in book 5, Harry had a date with a girl (Cho) he'd been crushing on since book 3. She'd been dating another student the previous year, but he was murdered and she never actually properly mourned the death, given how she was in the previous book (very social and such, surrounded by friends, happy and such)...book 5, she was conspicuously alone outside of just one friend and she was weepy a lot. Anyway, during the date, Cho wanted to talk to Harry about him since Harry was the last person to see him alive. He brought the body back. By observation, it just showed me that Cho is the type who needs to talk about stuff. Harry's character (in canon) is the opposite. He's not the type to talk about stuff and internalizes a lot of things that may bother him...in the books. He's the type to avoid things, hence his constantly brushing off Hermione whenever she gets on him for something. He hates conflict and confrontation.
Anyway, Harry was to meet Hermione later on that afternoon. She asked him to meet her and it was urgent. She told him that morning about it and that it was important but didn't say why and rushed off. Typical Hermione behavior. She's done that all throughout the books. Give vague information about stuff.
Anyway, slight argument with the pair and Harry met with Hermione, explained what happened and Hermione explained why Cho reacted in such a way and what he could've/should've done. People for the ship of Harry x Hermione said that she purposely sabotaged the date and gave the advice too late. Unless she's psychic, how would she have known, anyway? That wasn't what broke the two up anyway. After finding out why Harry had to meet up with Hermione, Cho had no problems with it.
What broke them up was Cho's friend's betrayal, getting all of them in trouble and during their argument, Harry mentioned not only Hermione, but Ron too...but never mind all that.
So yeah, junk like this has been around way before Tumblr, I'm sure.

I don't even get shippers. Why care THAT much? I understand if you like a pairing, but literally fighting other real-life people over it, and then hating fictional characters...is just utterly idiotic.
I mean there's people who defend ships like its a religion or their sexuality. They feel if you don't like their ship you're morally attacking them, as if someone made fun of your religion or homophobia or something that.
Makes you realize these people need to get their head in the real world, and arguing over fictional character romances is not a big deal at all.

Makes you realize these people need to get their head in the real world, and arguing over fictional character romances is not a big deal at all.Yeah, this is how I feel regarding shipping. Debating them could be fun. In the case of Harry Potter though, since that's the only fandom in recent memory anyway where I was part of a community where people were debating them, the series was still going, so the debates were more like, "What pairings will this series end with?" "I think JKR will include.... because...."... junk like that and actually presented a logical, sound argument and then someone could counter that, etc. No problems whatsoever. Then you have the vehement ones who took shipping debates way way WAY too seriously. I know I couldn't understand it. Shipping, imo, is just supposed to be fun...not treated like a life or death thing and being very rude to those, like you said, that disagreed or may have proved a fallacy in their argument. One argument that popped up was that Ron would domestically abuse Hermione because the two characters bickered...which was just ridiculous. It takes two to argue...
Oh, Pokemon and Digimon. Meh...not really debates...more so like, "I like A x B", but I did debate in the Pokemon one years and years ago. lol Ash x Misty vs Ash x Gary, but those involved in those debates were actually civil and decent and actually fun....but looking back now, they did treat it as serious business, just not like the vehement ones I mentioned earlier in the HP community.

I think the difference is with pokemon is since the series never ended, and has so little shipping in general, there is no real point. The writers largely dropped Misty's crush on Ash during Johto anyway besides the last episode, probably because that point they knew the series was going to go on for years and years and realized there was no reason to keep a pairing alive especially when they were going to axe her from the series.
Had Pokemon ended after Kanto, or even Johto, then maybe there would have been a shipping resolution. Not now though.

The only series I've seen in full is the first series and the Orange Islands. Anyway, those debates were about 15, 16 years ago. Either way, they were done in fun...the debates.

I agree that shipping can get out of hand when people argue about it to the point of insanity, but at the same time, I get why people are loyal to their certain pairings. And SSJup, I remember the Harry Potter stuff as I was a member of that forum as well, and people definitely had arguments about the pairings in that fandom. I haven't visited the site since the seventh movie came out and I heard it was shutting down, but then it didn't from what I know. Anyway, people just love their pairings and while we may not agree with it or how out of hand it can get, I say let them duke it out and just watch the fun.

Hey, I've seen Splinter/Shredder fics, so I get it. After all, Tom did say that had "strange likenesses" so there you go.

People love to have something to hate on because it's human nature - folks want to have something or someone to look down on so they can feel superior.

Grammar jokes don't work on a forum where half the people have English as a second language and the other half just don't give a sh*t about grammar.
I liked it.

I don´t like tumblr, cause it´s so damn confusing to use it. I know it´s just a user problem :P and I don´t want to do anything other than post pictures with it anyway ;)

* Why are some people hesitant of, or even outright hate, Tumblr? *
Because the stupid site is just that perplexing to me, and I just want to see is some decent art / fanart outside my usual fanwork haunts. All I seem to get is lots of B.S. blogs. :-? :flaming: :ohwell:
The only redeeming value that I see for Tumblr is the GIF selection, and even that sits next to the other sites that I go to for GIF options.
