View Full Version : Judith Hoag spotted on set of TMNT 2.

As we all know Judith Hoag played the original live action APRIL O'NEIL.
Her tweets as of late have been somewhat cryptic...but they allude to her
1) travelling to NYC (from LA)
2) doing a wardrobe fitting
3) and meeting 3 out of the 4 guys working on the same project
see for yourself...
http://i.imgur.com/UnQoADy.jpg
people keep asking her about it, but she's been very tight-lipped regarding details of this 'secret' project she is working on.

I say get rid of the Lingerie model and the NBA guys and give all their screen time to Hoag besides Hoag's screentime if this is legit.

This is probably only a cameo but if not then get rid of someone else.
No more new cast members after this. It's already way too cluttered. Before it's all said and done, the TMNT will only have about 30 minutes of screen time In their own freakin' movie.

Those are some heavy-handed "hints", that's for sure.
To be fair to Judith, although I'm well aware she's indeed been "doing stuff", to most people, they only know her from TMNT and that's all. So, from her perspective, there's no better time to get her name and face out there again in front of her biggest "audience". She most likely saw how much money the first one made and wished she'd done that one, so she probably campaigned for a spot in this one. And since the first movie turned off a lot of the old-school fans, the producers probably see her as a good nostalgia gimmick to get some of those fans to reinvest in the movie.
It'll probably be, like, a minute or two of screen time, but since we're already talking about it, it did the job.

No but it's totally okay this time! Because apparently the Turtles might be in the very beginning of the movie!
...
This is how low the bar has been set. We're excited that the Turtles will be in the very first few minutes of their own movie.
And people actually paid money to see the first movie. And then bought the DVD after that.

Honestly I couldn't care less if Judith Hoag is in this.
It's clear her casting is purely to manufacture some goodwill in a movie series that is desperately in need of some. She's the best live action April we've had but her being in this is by no means indicative of a turn in quality afterall actors have to take anything they can get until they make it big.
These kind of things are neat but wont sway anyone anymore than Kevin Eastman's continued endoresements or their cutsey references to previous versions so blatant you expect the actors to wink at the camera all the while actually ignoring the story and characters we want to see.
So we've got Vern, Carmello Anthony, Alessandra Ambrosio, Laura Linney's character and a cameo from assorted NBA players all in a movie in which the biggest complaint about it's predecessor was the focus on anything but TMNT related stuff. Anyone else think they are just making things worse?

im with you on this part...Vern, ill take, but the rest of them?! what were they producers thinking adding MORE humans to this movie.
if they think adding ball players, models, and Laura Linney was gonna draw a bigger audience to a TURTLE movie...they need to reconsider their business model.

IndigoErth
05-11-2015, 02:49 PM
Not to mention the creators of it clearly must not have an ounce of any ability to feel that they or the audience can relate to the Turtles.
Cripe, they have actual actors on set seen and portraying them, that should make it that much easier to shoot it in a way that you're treating the Turtles like people and the stars of it via their actors. But no.

To be honest under normal circumstances I'd be curious about someone like Laura Linney in a movie like this.
Having Judith Hoag in there is wise in the sense that at least some people remember and like her portrayal of April in the classic movie will be more willing to give the sequel the benefit of the doubt and think "well gee if the first April likes it must be good". Sadly for them I don't think there's enough of those kind of people to make a difference but like Linney's casting I wouldn't necessarily see it as something negative in itself.
The problem is since the last movie which not only the had the turtles and Splinter but also Shredder vying for screentime and Karai reduced to a background character even having Megan Fox pretty much the focus even when they were around then it's very bad omen to have the sequel overloaded with so many other characters and stories particularly as they've set themselves to accomplish more storywise than the first.
Really if you think about last years movie only needed to have an origin for the turtles and Splinter, meet April and have some conflict with Shredder. Anything else of just extra and yet it was those extras that took priority and shortchanged what people wanted to see.
This year we need an origin for Casey, establish a connection between him and the main cast, Baxter Stockman, an origin and conflict with Bebop and Rocksteady and some kind of Shredder conflict...and that's before getting into fans hopes they'll somehow correct that origin but even now we've got even more extras that seem to be priority over the stuff we need to see.
You're right that it isn't a good business model for the long term. Last years movie was successful but not successful (or liked) enough for them to coast on the idea that they'll get better as the go. There's a lot of fans that didn't really care for it but still defend the Platinum Dunes movie in the belief there was enough there to improve. If the sequel falls into the same pitfalls then I think that faith will waver.

"Half Shell"? This should be sutitled: "TMNT: Placate Fans." Because doing crap like putting 1985 on a license plate and giving Judith Hoag a walk-on cameo means anything in a film with no script that's some kind of toy-driven hyper-realization of all the horrors of the Fred Wolf show.

No yeah that's pretty much exactly what they're doing. 100% without a doubt. It's just more bullsh*t pandering that the hacks behind this movie can point to and say "see!? we care about you f*cking nerds!! We put the original movie April into a scene or two, and Bebop and Rocksteady, and Foot clan that kinda look like Foot ninjas!! Now enjoy more Megan Fox and Will Arnett staring at her ass! Oh and the good-looking dude from Arrow and some model are in it too! Look Megan Fox in a blonde school girl costume! *waves hands fast*"
But...then I saw Judith in that suit in that one picture and...some of those feelings just kinda went away for a minute. And it was nice.
But then reality came back and I want to beat this movie to death with a shovel.

It would have been so awesome had they brought her in as April, labeled the Turtles as adults (while leaving exact act unknown and up to interpretation), and just made it out like it was many years later after the original films.
I wonder if having the original April there is a little intimidating for Fox. (Wonder if Fox has the humility to be at least slightly intimidated.)

It wouldn't be hard to improve on the 2014 movie but that's a far cry from being actually good.
Still even if it somehow pulled it off I think it would take some doing for the previous movie not to be the elephant in the room. These are still going to be the turtles that learned ninjutsu from a book.

Yes...relatively speaking it is.
The movie origin also robs Splinter of any connection with Yoshi and thus any personal connection the characters have with their primary villain.
Shark_Blade
05-11-2015, 07:47 PM
That connection could be explained in the sequel perhaps. Much like the ooze was explored more in Secret of the Ooze.
I hope they go the reincarnation route like in IDW. I tend to have that at the back of my kind ever since I saw that "April had pet turtles in a lab" scene in the movie. :trazz: Hmm how similar...interesting.
IndigoErth
05-11-2015, 08:00 PM
I still wish they'd have just made Yoshi a guy working in the lab (who is also a ninjutsu expert), is the one that burned the place down, and became Splinter... it would have been so simple. And at least gets those needed ties and rivalry, if in a different way and reason.
But no... lab animals and book because less creative is better.

That's a big ask to fit into a movie which is giving an origin to Casey as well as setting up he meets April and the turtles, a storyline for Baxter Stockman, Bebop and Rocksteady, some evil plan for the Shredder etc. Not to mention a sexy costume party, an NBA game, whatever Alessandra Ambrosio, Carmello Anthony and Laura Linney are doing and some news segments with Judith Hoag. Wow this better be one long movie to do all of these things justice and you're betting we'll get an expanded origin? You think they'll spend a good portion in flashbacks to ancient Japan?
Even a more classic straightforward origin seems difficult to work in. The origin that Splinter happened to find a book on ninjutsu when the enemies he would face are ninjas is already a divisive point, it would somewhat strain credibility to attach some connection to Yoshi given what they've established. He was Yoshi's pet that somehow ended up in the lab of a man who works for the guy who killed his owner?
"similar...interesting? Perhaps I'd argue similar...coincidental. Baring in mind that the turtles mutated in a lab idea has been pitched repeatedly for years prior and from Leibesman's i09 interview it sounds as if he only learned about the IDW origin late on, noticed the similarity and went with it (sorta).
If they thought a Yoshi connection was "too complex" for the first they aint going to put it in this one. Then again it strikes me that people were convinced the we'd get it in the first regardless of what Leibesman said but hey if it's not in this sequel there's always the third or fourth.

Not to jinx things, but this movie keeps looking better and better. I really hope it improves over the first one, it has so much potential to be better.
Because Judith Hoag has a cameo in it?
Kevin Eastman had a cameo in the first one too. Literally the co-creator of the Turtles.
Not only did they cut it out, the movie still sucked.
What, in your opinion, makes this movie look better and better?

Couldn't have said it better myself. That said, I'm still looking forward to seeing her...call me a sucker.
Imagine a scene of the Turtles watching a news broadcast with April in it, And then seeing her interviewing Judith Hoag's character, And then Mikey is like. "Am I seeing double? Which ones April?"
I can already see that happening, and immediately upon seeing pictures with both of them, a line similar to that one popped into my head.

Dude, relax. :tlol: It's perfectly okay for people to be hopeful.
To be fair, this is the first news I've seen about this film that makes me actually want to see it; but I highly doubt that they'll be pitching Hoag's scenes, considering she's among the only gimmicks they have to draw in old-schoolers who hated the 2014 one.

Will she be playing April's mother?
'Now, dear, you know there are no such things as talking turtles. And why won't you go out with that nice cardiologist I've introduced you to? He's been asking about you....'
This is starting to sound more & more like Harry Potter nos. 4-6, where they also tried to stuff 700+ pages of book into barely 2 hours of movie, which doesn't work unless you really take the hatchet to the story - which they did.
How anyone who hasn't read the books can follow the action in those movies, I'll never know.

I sincerely hope they don't keep milking that "April tries to prove she isn't crazy" thing...it's been done so many times. We all know she isn't crazy, and we all know that no one will believe her about it unless they see it for themselves. So it's a pointless scenario to tackle.

This is interesting, I just read something about why she was replaced by Paige Turco in the other two TMNT movies, Apparently she was complaining about the 1st film being violent, And its the reason why she got replaced.
https://www.yahoo.com/movies/megan-fox-judith-hoag-april-oneil-tmnt-2-118742532422.html
Variety caught up with Hoag last August, as the first installment of the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was hitting theaters. The actress, who can currently be seen on ABC’s TV hit Nashville, talked about being replaced (by Paige Turco) in two sequels that spawned from the original '90 film. She believes it’s because she complained about the film’s violence. “Everybody was beating everybody up,” she said. “I thought the movie suffered because of that. It was something I spoke to the producers about, I think they thought I was too demanding, and moved on.”
Hoag didn’t seem the least bit bitter: “I will see it out of curiosity,” she said of 2014’s relaunch, which, like the 1990 version, became a major box-office hit, racking up almost $200 million in the U.S. alone. “You want the franchise to keep going forward and do well.”
The fact she thought the 1990 film was violent, would rub some people the wrong way, Considering she was the original April in that film.

At least Megan Fox cares, I mean she wanted to be in this thing, since she was a fan, Despite all the hate she gets by some fans, But see seems very passionate about it.

To be fair not only has their been several contradictory reasons put out there why Judith was replaced for Secret of the Ooze some from Judith herself.
Didn't she long say it was comments about how the studio's cuts had "gutted" the movie that there was more character building and more spiritual stuff in the movie.
The whole idea that she found it too violent is a new one though and you have to wonder if she had a problem with that what she thinks of last year's movie given that it had toothless but more overt violence. Maybe that will be gone in the sequel snd she's just towing the current party line of that it's "for kids".

It's obvious, Megan Fox is an imposter April, she's garnered just enough attention that the real April (Judith Hoag) has come to call her out on the facade. Because of...I dunno...aliens or some such. What seems a friendly cheek kiss is really Hoag whispering that she knows the truth, that it's time for Fox to drop the charade. Then we learn that April is really a Krang (because of obligatory Fred Wolf reference, and non comic readers will say Utroms are Krang ripoffs) sleeper agent.

The nostalgic fan in me thinks its cool, but I really didn't like the 2014 film and I don't think Judith Hoag is going to win me over in seeing the second. But see it or not I'm going to be curious as hell to how she will turn out and what kind of character she will portray in this movie. So in that respect, honestly they have succeeded in hooking me on that.
But good on her for getting a role in the movie. If I were in her shoes I would have to, because being in a movie seems like it could be a blast. and I dig Judith because she has passion for the TMNT movie she was in, interacts with the fans to. She could have easily stuck her nose up at the Turtles movies, because it was this crazy popular (annoyingly so to a lot of adults at the time.) thing at the time for little kids. I can see a lot of actors seeing something like Ninja Turtles as something below them or making fun of it.

Yeah, how anyone can decide to forsake something that is part of the foundation of it, I don't even know... :ohwell:
In a way I guess Shredder basically turned into Eric Sacks' minion to go after Splinter and the Turtles, because he sure as heck had no reason to have any beef with them other than his associate losing one opportunity to make money. But he "practically raised" him, so I guess 'daddy' was mad.

they NEED to find a way to make that conflict matter - otherwise its really just blah, when in fact that is one of the great rivalries in comic book history, imo.
I wholeheartedly agree. However, lets face it, it's not gonna happen. Maybe with the next inevitable incarnation?

That was a theory for the first movie; would have been a nice reveal.

what if shredder actually is a utrom?Either that or someone mentioned the first Shredder could've been Oroku Nagi and the new one is Oroku Saki.

Wow she's gorgeous. I'll probably be that idiot that makes her say her fans are crazy. Haha. Hopefully meeting her this year. Excited to see her in the next movie. :)

I sincerely hope they don't keep milking that "April tries to prove she isn't crazy" thing...it's been done so many times. We all know she isn't crazy, and we all know that no one will believe her about it unless they see it for themselves. So it's a pointless scenario to tackle.
Sadly, milking that which has been milked many times yet again is wut moovees do.
It does make sense from the standpoint of your average studio exec, who figures that everyone buying tickets is a brand-new sukkah who wuz born jus' yesterday, and has no clue what the movie's about anyway. Make that 'even less clue than the exec'.
As for the rat background, I actually prefer that one. While I do agree that it doesn't make sense that a rat would be mimicking his Ninja owner, they are considerably smarter than most people give them credit for (see also: movie exec/audience, above). It would also create more of a bond between Splinter and the turtles, since they would both be animals mutated into humanoid creatures by zeh ooze.
Yes, I am deliberately ignoring the fact that a real rat would likely try to eat rather than clean & raise 4 baby turtles.

Considering someone already pointed that out, so are you.

Guys guys guys, what if Judith is really The Shredder? They hired an Asian guy to bait and switch for the big plot twist.

If they want old-school fans' approval there needs to be a scene where Hoag beats the holy hell outta Fox. That would be the ultimate chick fight/nerdgasm. I know I'm not the only one :tlol:
