View Full Version : Cursing/Swearing

We all do it. Some more often than others.

I don't curse much, especially not in real life. Dunno why, but I'd guess because I grew up in a home where cursing was extremely rare. Like seriously, if I hear my mother utter the word "sh*t" once a month, that's a lot. And the rest of my family doesn't seem to have the habit of cursing either. And of course, they would definitely not be happy if I cursed in front of them. I got scolded really badly the few times I've done it as a kid. And I've learnt pretty much every curse word at school or from the media.

I'd say I curse more than the rest of my family, but I still don't do it much. I always found people who cuss like sailors to be quite low-browish and unintelligent. Is there really a need to drop 3 curse words every sentence? Don't you know any other adjectives?

So, how about you? How often do you curse?

I think Ron Swanson said it best:

"There is only one bad word: Taxes. If any other word is good enough for sailors, it's good enough for you."

I dunno about that, but I've occasionally been known to swear like one. Particularly after having dealt with extremely rude or idiotic customers. The only one I RARELY use is the "c" word. Hate the word, but I freely admit that there are still times when it applies to a person.

No spoken or unaltered F, S, or C.

I will say/type "f," "eff," or "effing." I will, with a stiff jaw as if strained to barely let it out, mouth the word s*it with no voice or nearly under my breath spell it. C I do not use in any form.

To state that something "Is being a stupid ass b*tch" pretty much sums up the worst of my actual swearing and what my mother continues to not approve of.

To add on an odd one, I have a high dislike for and won't use the word Fugly, without the "f," for anything or anyone. Won't even write it, on rare occasion the nearest I come it to include the "f" in order to change it. (Such as I did here but crossed out to exclude it.) Which is weird I know because the "f" is technically making it worse. lol

Everything's come out of my mouth at one point or another. I'm a patient person, but occasionally, even I break heh. Or when bashing a foot against something.

As for the C word, it's a term of affection here in the UK for close friends, in a deprecating way. Rather like how African Americans have consistently tried to reclaim the N word. So if you hear me use the C word in a joking manner, it means I really like you

I don't use swear words as insults to people, because it's a lot more rewarding to think up a better insult.

My parents are from Newfoundland, which is full of nothing but sailors and fishermen, so my house was always filled with cursing, though I refrained from it for many many years. I do curse casually now, but I let loose when I get angry at something an incredible amount. I like a good curse, especially if it's used in a comedic fashion with excellent timing.

I'm incredibly good at filtering myself, so I rarely curse publicly or in general conversation around most people. Though I've noticed I tend to say "oh, SH*T!" when I'm excited about something regardless of company.

Alllll the time, but never at work unless alone with a co-worker or a client who's also a friend. I often use "F*ck" or "f*ckin'" in place of a comma. I've been told it's a NJ thing. But I'unno about that.

I swear quite a bit, but I'm fairly good about tailoring my conversational style to the company/environment I'm in. I try not to swear at work, or in front of my extended family, and I ease my way into it when I meet new people.

Growing up, my parents didn't seem to care about anything softer than the F-bomb, which I still won't use in their presence. My youngest sister on the other hand, has no problem doing so; they used to tell her off, but her persistence won out in the end. When it's just me and her, the censor takes the day off and we pollute the air with all manor of foulness. I normally try to avoid the big C, but my sister brings it out somehow.

DarkFell
06-03-2015, 11:21 PM
I try to refrain, but I still let loose a few curse words. The F-bombs start dropping when I'm panicky * i.e trying to rush out the door and random stuff just goes wrong*, whenever I make corrections on my posts, or when I'm just really angry. It's a bad habit and honestly, I'm really not proud of it.

usually I'm like Peanut, casually. though when i'm around children i tend to tone it down, less they really piss me off then i'll let loose. but course then I feel bad and appologize for losing my cool, cause after all they're just kids! me thinks that's why their Mom gets after me sometimes about being to lenient with her kids

I tend to say "sh*it" or "f*ck" if my bang my leg or my hand on the desk and get hurt. It strangely helps coping with the physical pain.

When I grew up, I was taught that cursing was wrong.

Before I watched the Angry Video Game Nerd, it was rare for me to curse but after seeing AVGN videos, I thought it was a good way not to keep your anger bottled up inside.

One time at my job, I bumped into an object, I was so surprised and it startled me and it made me say the f word. A coworker heard me say it and I was so embarrassed. I'm still embarrassed about it now.

I cuss, but it's dependent on a lot of things - who's around, if I'm angry or super-relaxed, whether I'm at work etc. I know when it's appropriate and when it's not - ie, if there are kids/old people/my mother/nana present or if I'm at work, it's off the table. If I'm chilling with the bae on the other hand, I don't watch my language and whatever comes out comes out.

I almost never use the 'c' word as in my area, it's often used casually by bogans - I prefer to call someone a twat or a douche-canoe. Douche-waffle is always good too. Even douche-nugget can do in a pinch. The important thing is to not let your creativity be limited.

Oh, I definitely curse all of the time. It's not like I say one every three words or whatever, but I do tend to have a foul mouth when I get mad and I just let loose. I've never really used the C word, but all the other ones are fair game with me. I do tend not to curse around kids though as that's not a good thing to do even though our parents cursed around us, and we knew better than to say it back.

Which reminds me... I was on date recently, and we were getting some food at a general restaurant here in London. I wasn't talking very loudly, and I can't remember exactly what we were talking about, but I used the F word to describe something that wasn't going right in general.

On the table over to our left were sat three children, not sure of ages but the eldest was probably about 8 or 9. Evidently she still heard what I said, and just matter-of-factly excused herself, and asked me please to not to use bad words in front of the other kids. Have to say I was a little taken aback, one that a kid would do that in the first place, and second that she'd ask so nicely. So I told her that I would try to consider my future language, and she said thank you.

Really, one of the strangest and most adorable things I've seen come out of a kid's mouth heh.

Kids are gonna hear curse words sooner or later. Whether on the TV or on the street. They better not take their kids to sports events if they don't like people cursing around them.

Kids are gonna see porn sooner or later, do you want them to see it when they are six? Okay, perhaps a slightly extreme example, but I'm more of the view that kids should be gradually introduced to these sorts of things at a slightly later age. They don't seem to get the chance to be kids as long as I was. That isn't to say shield them or be a prude, but graphic language, sex and violence aren't really suitable for pre-teenagers imo.

Hearing kids whose balls have not dropped over the headset on Xbox Live while playing Gears of War or CoD is proof of that

Except it's one thing for kids to overhear a stranger cursing. That's just inevitable. While it's a completely different thing for kids hearing their parents curse openly or allow them to watch violent and explicit movies.

Based on the friends of mine who have kids, it's seemingly more likely their kids hear bad language from either their class mates, or themselves, rather than strangers. Or maybe things are just a bit different in the UK...

I never said the opposite. My point is, if a stranger curses a child is less likely to emulate him because his/her parents are gonna tell him/her not to do it. But if a child hears his/her parents cursing then she'll see it as something normal and pretty acceptable.

I used to refrain from it because I was taught it was anti-Catholic and improper. I grew up in a household where if I said "Jesus Christ" and it wasn't a prayer, I'd get told off; and "goddamn" was ESPECIALLY a no-no. Things changed once I got into high school...I curse pretty often now, but a lot more during casual conversation, as opposed to when I'm actually angry.

I often use "F*ck" or "f*ckin'" in place of a comma.

My friends (and future roommates) do this too, and it's starting to rub off on me.

It's funny because when my sis, her hubby, and his kids came over, I had to remind my dad to watch his language around them. Both are thirteen and eleven respectively, but I'm the type where you just don't swear around young kids. Then my mom reprimanded my dad for swearing, and my sis said, "Oh, they've heard worse." Okay, but that's not the point. Then one of the boys asked his dad when he'd be old enough to cuss. He responded, "When you're old enough to take down your old man."
