^^^^^

hahaha, I find it amusing how people saw that we Nerds were an untapped potential for making money, took our hobbies, they hire one nerd to write their scripts or do mediocre research by themselves, put a hot lady in the video and boom, money. The ones to blame really are us the nerds themselves for accepting it.

Eh, it's ok, I mean valid and all but it's mostly just reiterating some of the things people have been saying and hoping for. If the film makers have not heard it by now then they are being selectively deaf to it.

I watched it without the sound just to see the bullet points. Casey, Henchmen, Ninjaing, More Turtles, Shredder, and whatever that last point was... apparently I actually needed to hear the commentator there.

It kinda bugs me that the solution to fixing these movies is so freaking obvious. Is there anyone (outside of Bay and Platinum Dunes) who doesn't understand how to make a better TMNT movie? :trolleye:

Just get rid of those goddamn noses! The movie would actually be watchable if we didn't have those ugly noses and those hideous nostrils on their faces.

Well the nostrils probably aren't going anywhere, so an easier fix might just have to be holding a finger up in front of your line of vision to hide it. :trazz:

I know this is pointless, but I'm gonna disagree with you.

Nick/Ciro have a vision for the Turtles.
Bay and Platinum Dunes have a vision for money.

Oh good, somebody already asked.

No, they should certainly do sound research, not only of existing material, but also from what fans say to get an idea of the important factors and a feel for what they're doing right or wrong and adjust their angle as needed.

Now I sorta want a chipmunks crossover (yeah, not really) where they get under foot and up squashed because the Turtles are busy and ain't got time for that nonsense.

The reason Shredder was just in the shadows and the movie felt pieced together at times was because they listened to a bunch of internet whiners and changed it.

Sacks would have made a great Shredder, which he was meant to be originally. He played his part really well. He could have been his son taking over with new armor. Which was supposed to happen or something like that i guess.

Do research on the franchise...do NOT listen to - teh internetz.

And I don't care what anyone says. The Shredder armor was freaking awesome. It's only compared to Transformers because of Michael Bay. Though the Transformers designs (Optimus for sure and some faces) were inspired by samurai armor to begin with.

Eric Sachs being Shredder was a terrible, terrible idea. Not quite as bad as Shredder being "Colonel Shrader" and being an alien with spikes coming out of him (good god, that was awful), but a white Shredder is pretty idiotic as well.

IndigoErth
06-08-2015, 12:39 AM
Yeah, I kinda gotta go with Cubed on that one. Foundational stuff they shouldn't even have tampered with in the first place.

I've already said it in another thread, but will say so again... I'm cool with it if they want to tell new stories, but don't screw with the foundation. Establish that first intact, get the origin and characters right, then go off and be entirely original with new foes, I don't care. (Call them grown, say it's post-Shredder years but show his influence, that's fine.)

Wildcat
06-08-2015, 01:06 AM
Sachs being Shredder is hardly a problem. He didn't have to be the "original" Shredder, just a new guy taking over. It's supposed to be a different take anyway.

Overall the turtles origin here is more creative than "both ooze and turtles accidentally fall into the sewer". The only real issue is them learning martial arts from a book they happen to find.

I don't know what else was changed or rearranged but it probably would have been a better put together movie if they didn't cave to internet complaints.

We're talking about people whom when they "caved to complaints" they also decided to take a weird route and basically make Shredder Sacks' surrogate father.

They could have just as easily made them old friends. Or evil business partners even.

But no, they got weird about it. Even though their connection wasn't really given any importance. Even though they had cast a man in his 50s as Sacks, making Shredder presumably at least in his 70s (but somehow able to expertly use that new metal laden suit he had zero experience with).

Maybe complaining fans "ruined" something, but these people must have been drunk the whole time themselves because their own ideas sure didn't help it either.

Those could not have been their actual ideas when we know Sachs was supposed to be Shredder. That's what it became afterwards. Which of course would end up thrown together...because it was. Just because some people couldn't deal with a different Shredder.

So true.

Anyway, it's a complete shelving of all responsibility to say that the last minute rethink / casting / poorly-cobbled-together-backstory of the major villain was the fans' fault - the fans weren't the professionals being paid to write a screenplay! It doesn't say "complaining fans" on the credits. Seriously. These guys are supposedly at the top of their field - paid millions for their expertise and talent. They should be able to get this stuff right or at the very least do it slightly wrong, but with enough quality and conviction for them to own it and stand by their decisions.

Sacks as Shredder would've been a terrible idea. However, it would've made this movie a little more enjoyable. It would give him and Splinter somewhat of a rivalry, and that would be better than what we got.

However, I'm glad we complained. It affected Ninja Turtles 1, yeah, but it also affected TMNT 2. Now, we've got an actual Shredder, actual FOOT NINJA, and probably a better story. Because, if we hadn't complained, we'd still have those goddamn Foot Soldiers with guns. If we had to sacrifice TMNT 1 so TMNT 2 could be "better", so be it. I'd rather have a bad movie that has some elements of the source material than a bad movie that has no elements of it. Well, actually, I'd rather they stop making TMNT movies, but hey, it's a cash cow so they're not going to.

Absolutely. It's just a shame that they didn't understand the property well enough to have - for example - a ninja Foot Clan from the outset. I mean, come on - it's basic stuff. The writers did not immerse themselves into the TMNT universe enough to know it sufficiently well to realise that there are some things you don't mess with.

They lacked confidence right from the start. When that Col Schraeder / alien turtles thing kicked off, all we got from Bay and co was back-peddling and denial. "It's not a current script"; "I was talking about the ooze"; "blah blah blah"... They took a brief look at the franchise, messed with it, and only then realised that some things are sacred when people called them on it. Then they panicked and tried to change things again.

It seems like they might be putting a number of things "right" (for want of a better word) for the sequel, but if they had just spent time getting to know the turtles and the franchise well, understanding what people love about it, a lot of this chaos could have been avoided and we would have had a better film to start with.

And... end rant.

Being his adopted son is not weird.
My point was not that said 'adoption' is weird... my point was that it was a weird decision for the film makers. Instead of choosing to lay out a simple connection that doesn't have a domino effect on other elements and the second film.

Had they stuck their version of Shredder they would not have had to do all that...lack of backstory, the odd age difference, Shredder able to use the suit.
They didn't have to do all that anyhow. Tie them together instead as evil business partners - their age and back story now don't matter - roll cameras.

However, I'm glad we complained. It affected Ninja Turtles 1, yeah, but it also affected TMNT 2. Now, we've got an actual Shredder, actual FOOT NINJA, and probably a better story.
Feel the same way. I can only hope the story itself will be better, but complaints as a 'necessary evil,' in a sense, at least got that train on a better track. (Even if it's still dragging a couple displaced cars behind it.) (And it did also score Brian Tee the Shredder job for the sequel in an industry were Asians tend to get a lot fewer roles, so that's also a plus. Hope he makes good on it and preforms the heck out of that role.)

Had they stuck to their original vision Sachs would have been Col. Schrader and that Blue Door script would have been made and I think it's fair to say no one wants that.

We know their vision as we read and we didn't like it and seemingly neither did Paramount but they eventually bought it.

I'm not so sure that it was purely fan griping that got them to change things. We know the main instigator for the change was Michael Bay himself who felt the movie was too dark. The fact that someone said "well since we're pretty much re-shooting all this stuff howzabout we include that Saki guy everyone seems to want".

Not to mention that even before the re-shoots that happened after production had wrapped a few actors had publicly mentioned that during the initial production they were re-shooting things (not uncommon when making a movie) but that they were incorporating different ideas. Perhaps given that Paramount weren't fully on board with the their "vision" in the first place meant they were more receptive to listening to complaints?

I'd definitely say if they had a solid vision that everyone making the movie believed in then it couldn't have been dismantled so easily. If they felt they were on to something good then no amount of fan complaining would have changed their minds. As everyone said if it really should have been Saki from the start.

EDIT

Oh definitely. The changeover to Sacks as Shredder to some anonymous character was late in the game and definitely in those re-shoots after production wrapped.

Being his adopted son is not weird. People get adopted but everything you're describing is most likely directly from listening to the complaints.

Had they stuck their version of Shredder they would not have had to do all that...lack of backstory, the odd age difference, Shredder able to use the suit.

Those could not have been their actual ideas when we know Sachs was supposed to be Shredder. That's what it became afterwards. Which of course would end up thrown together...because it was. Just because some people couldn't deal with a different Shredder.

Except we have an actual actor (Danny Woodburn) saying that the plot was was exactly the same as what was originally shot except for Sacks and Shredder being separate characters.

We know from the interview in Variety that the re-shoots where primarily because Michael Bay thought that Leibesman's first cut was too "mature" and ordered re-shoots with an emphasis on humor. The fact that they also took this opportunity to change the identity of the Shredder is neither here nor there; the motivation was primarily to please Bay any notions of pleasing fans was secondary.

Again this seems like an attempt to blame the movie sucking on the fans rather than admit it was just bad. Like I said there's assertions from various actors that even during shooting they were changing things but those were purely of their own motivation and kinda shows they didn't really know what they were doing. But if you're pinning you're entire argument on the one change they did that could arguably be said to please the fans then we know from the word of someone involved it had little affect on the rest of the movie.

They're so obviously trying to portray an over-the-top super-irritating character to the Nth degree, and it's a wonder nobody's done anything about it by now. There is Zero chance that even one thing they opine is legitimate.

I think a few posters are starting to go that route.

Like I said there's assertions from various actors that even during shooting they were changing things but those were purely of their own motivation and kinda shows they didn't really know what they were doing. But if you're pinning you're entire argument on the one change they did that could arguably be said to please the fans then we know from the word of someone involved it had little affect on the rest of the movie.I wasn't blaming fan complaints for everything just the Shredder thing. I still think Sachs would have been good in the role.

I don't think the movie flat out sucked like a lot of people do. I thought it was ok for a turtle action movie. There were certain things I liked and disliked.

That's the problem with some people on here. Anyone who defends the movie or say they enjoyed it are automatically labeled as loving it and not caring about quality.

We're not saying it was fantastic. I'm not anyway. It is possible to still enjoy a subpar movie despite it not being the best. Everyone has something they've enjoyed despite knowing it wasn't great. Look at B movies and cult classics. Huge following.

Oh good, I hate zombies.

Meh, I mean I don't hate Zombies. I hate how people think zombies are scary. They're the least threatening of any horror trope. They're harmless.

So, uh, I love Zombies?

people seem to forget that the first released trailer for the movie had sacks approaching the armor before any reshoots happened. also if i remember right( since my copy is currently packed away) the tmnt anniversary history books names sacks as Shredder

Indeed it does. ("The Ultimate Visual History"). It even has a photograph of him wearing one of Shredder's gauntlets.

Well, maybe? I mean, they're about as threatening as dust bunnies, right?
You're startled when you find one, but then, you just deal with it, and move on.

The7 things that need to happen for the movie to make a ton of money are COMPLETELY different - and quite possibly the exact opposite - from the 7 things that need to happen for the die-hard fans to like the movie.

Thing is it's up for debate whether the first movie really made a "ton" of money and the fact that a not-insignificant amount of people walked away thinking it was one of the worst things they'd seen - not just die hard fans.

Clearly if they want people to give this series a second chance as well as tempt people that didn't give it a shot in the first place then it has to do something different.

Just get rid of those goddamn noses! The movie would actually be watchable if we didn't have those ugly noses and those hideous nostrils on their faces.

Not this again. Turtles. Have. Noses! :P

Sacks is also Shredder in the video game based off the movie, and the Japanese trailer used Fichtner's voice during Shredder's bits.

I find that strange. The ONE place they use it...when the character everyone else heard is supposed to be of Japanese decent. (Edit: I guess maybe they might have been concerned if they'd gotten it right, being an American-made movie and all. Kinda strikes me as looking like 'American greed' though, changing who Shredder is.)

if you wanna get technical, turtles have nostrils and beaks, not noses

while yes cubed is a little over the top with his hatred, i to am not a fan of the Human noses on the turtles...granted i just dont like the whole desgin but yea...the noses are the deal breaker..if they didnt have those i might warm up to them more

Semantics. There's still nostrils and they're allowed to be there. Beaks are noses to them. Don't let such a small and insignificant thing get in the way of something you'll no doubt hate anyway. :P

I don't mind them. They're barely noticeable to me. They can easily be changed I guess. I'm sure PD are aware of people's complaints regarding the turtles' designs. The only problem I have is their height.

The OOTS nostrils weren't bad and their faces still looked pretty pleasing. Their faces in the Bay movie were just too human. Mikey especially looked like Alfred E. Neuman from MAD Magazine which was just gross. They have grown on me a bit but man, I wish we would've gotten better designs from the get go.

 Hadn't noticed that, but he really kinda does.

I just wish we'd seen the designs waaaay sooner than we did. Fairly used to them now, but took a while.

Except we have an actual actor (Danny Woodburn) saying that the plot was was exactly the same as what was originally shot except for Sacks and Shredder being separate characters. But what about the original trailer with Sacks saying he was trying to create heroes, or talk of a scene involving Foot Ninja being pumped full of mutagen? I think there was more changed than simply making Sacks not Shredder.I find that strange. The ONE place they use it...when the character everyone else heard is supposed to be of Japanese decent. They also did it in the French trailer.

If we did see them sooner, maybe we could've complained enough for them to make significant changes to their faces or maybe not. All in all, I have to say, Leo's face in the movie turned out the best. Still not great but tolerable.

Even just leaving them as they are, just wish I'd had longer to come to terms with it beforehand. They took so damn long to even get trailers out there.

At the risk of sounding melodramatic, I was something akin to somewhat devastated there for a while. I can laugh at it now as I've come around a lot since then, but that was not an easy grieving period. lol Just grateful my fave is often considered to have turned out the best visually, that helps.

for me if given the choice to change one thing, personally id rather it the faces

yes the heights bother me as well but

a characters face whether it be human, animal or creature is what draws you to either like or hate, or fear them....clearly these turtles on looks alone have put quite the division among fans as the very walls of this forum show

Kruger or maskless vorhess wouldnt be the hero of a film, extreme i know but catch my drift?

id be willing to bet that if the faces where more "normal" like say more classic turtle look with only a slight subtle change, the other design issues would easily be brushed off

sadly subtlety is not bays strong point

I don't think Raph was hideous but the nostrils were a little too close together. It made them look a little too human. At least it was toned down a bit because his nose used to look like a gorilla from some of the earlier images. Kind of doesn't make any sense to change them now unless it's very minute.

I think Raph must have a little bulldog DNA in there or something, the narrower nose design on he and Mikey both just look a bit puppy-ish to me. :trazz:
