View Full Version : April should be with Casey? Or Donatello?

It seems like it's kind of divided between the 2 but I was wondering who you think would overall make a great couple. April is usually seen with Casey but there has been some connections she's made with Donatello, too.

I feel like one of the main reasons why some wouldn't want April and Donatello together is that they are different species and can't breed. April is a human therefore a mammal and Donatello is a turtle, therefore a reptile, and mammals and reptiles can't procreate. But then it's assuming that they would even have kids in the first place as not every couple has kids. They couldn't have children although of course it doesn't mean they can't get intimate.

I don't think that it was necessary to give the whole birds and the bees speech... I like to assume that everyone here understands that a turtle and a human can't have a kid...

That's not really the point I'm trying to make...I'm aware people know the difference between a mammal and a reptile, I'm just giving out reasons as to why some people doubt that such a relationship could happen because of that reason. I've seen that happen before with other couples of species that are entirely different, and people usually are against it for the reason that they can't procreate. Which to me, I think is petty. As if to assume every couple has to have a kid...

First of all, this thread should really be in the Nick section.

Second, I find the concept of April and Donatello actually being together to be disgusting. Donny's crush is cute, but I would really hope that Nickelodeon would never actually go ahead and have Donny and April actually dating.

This is gonna turn odd very fast, I can see that already. lol

Ummm... depends on the version. In most cases, well April and Casey belong together. (Although I question her taste in men. lol)

If we're talking 2012, IMO...possibly no one yet.

Too soon, let it be older future April that someday falls for Casey as adults. I don't really have any issue with April and Donnie having some light little thing happening with each other in their youth, given that their life situations make it difficult to work in the long run and Casey likely "gets the girl" as an adult. (Speaking of which, when Renet shows up maybe she can settle it for Donnie, if he should keep hoping for it or accept that it doesn't pan out.)

I'm going with this. At least in every other main iteration of the TMNT, April's a legitimate character in her own right. (Sometimes... not sure about Fred Wolf TMNT.) For quite awhile now in Nick, she's just been part of the Triangle. Sheesh.

I put this in the general section because the Nick version isn't the only version of Donatello having a crush on April as he did in the 2003 version as well. We know their personalities even though different versions tweak them a little. I'm confused, you find the crush cute but the idea of them dating disgusting? To me it's no different that Goliath and Elisa Maza (From Gargoyles) having a serious relationship or Sonic and Sally Acorn (From Sonic The Hedgehog)

Yeah, but it was cute and subtle in 2003. And Donnie didn't have that f*cking tooth-gap either.

It was in 2003. However, I don't see what the tooth gap has to do with anything but ok. I'm just wondering which would make a better couple, regardless of race. I brought that up because I know someone was going to eventually.

Sorry, just another problem I have with Nick's version of Donnie. 'Cause the guy has to be the stereotypical nerd. :trolleye:

That tooth-gap would be stereotypical on any other character though.
Mike, because he's a little kid/hedonist.
Raph, because he's tough and it's clearly been knocked out.
Leo, because he's not the perfect leader we've come to know...not yet.

I see what you mean but at least they never gave him glasses. Wait... there was that 2014 movie. Never mind. xD

Strangely I think the 2012 Donnie is the best version despite the tooth gap. Maybe I like that he's more active. Not that he wasn't active in the other series but he's still competent in the series.

I think the relationship could go for either. Really, you can make just about any couple work together with the right writing. There's very few instances where a couple could be totally incompatible so I feel with the right writing, they could make either one work.

April being the only major human female in the show is paired with Casey who is the only major human male in the show. Not exactly rocket science.

You have a man, and a woman...and they're both humans and friends of the Turtles. Its only natural they would get together, its the natural order of things.

I don't really see what that has to do with it... I personally find it absurd that others think the Turtles can never ever go out with any characters even though they've clearly shown interest in females that are mutants, humans and even aliens. Casey and April being the major human characters doesn't mean they have to go out...It of course really depends on which versions you're really talking about and how often one hangs out with the other.

Well what if this version of Casey is a bit of an ass, never stops being an ass, and she doesn't fall for him. :trazz: I mean, they could both technically find other people and eventually introduce them to the Turtles when they know it's safe to make that choice.

Nothing wrong with having the gap between the teeth. I used to... but unlike me, Donnie just doesn't have access to an orthodontist. :P

They're jealous of each other whenever she seems to give one of them attention. Jealousy is the emotion one gets when someone takes something you believe yourself to have ownership of. I find that objectifying.

Donnie even goes so far as to call her, "My April," at one point.
Rather than just asking her out, they battle with each other to prove that they're more worthy of her.
As if she was a prize to be won.

None of them believe they own April they get jealous of each other because they want Aprils affection just like every love triangle. Saying " My April " isn't Donnie saying he owns her it's just like saying my love or my darling. And Casey and Donnie aren't fighting over who owns April it's who gets Aprils affection and who gets to be her romantic companion.

Ugh, this thread adresses an issue that's only relevant to the Nickolodeon cartoon and it's supplementary material, the question is utterly meaningless outside of it, and even then it seems like the cartoon dropped it. Casey is April's boyfriend in the original comics, the movies, the 4Kids cartoon and the IDW comics, even the Nickelodeon cartoon seems to go that way now.

Depends on the version.

I can roll with AprilxCasey in 2k3 because the relationship develops over time - it's gradual. FWIW, I never interpreted Donnie as having a crush on April in that version either.

As far as Nick goes - neither. She was introduced as a love interest from the moment she stepped onto the screen and it blisters my butt barnacles.

That being said, I'm getting very burnt out on the idea that she automatically has to be paired off just by virtue of the fact that she's a human female. I mean, I would like to think that it's a possibility that males and females can be platonic friends - whether they're human or non-human. Just because someone's a human male and someone else is a human female and they're friends does not mean they have to pair up. It's a crappy, irritating and problematic stereotype, just as annoying in fiction as it is in real life.

They are couple for the most part but no it isn't just relevant to the nick cartoon as Donnie clearly showed interest in her in other versions. That's why I asked who she should be with or is better off with...

Furthermore I always found the notion that the Turtles can't go out with anyone to be utterly absurd. Because their turtles? That doesn't make any sense. It's like someone decided that should be a rule when it never made sense to begin with as the Turtles clearly showed interest in female mutants, humans and aliens, and did so in many adaptations, whether it was the cartoons or the movies. I don't care if Donnie ended up with April but I always felt like one of the Turtles should be going out with someone. Why? Because it makes interesting character development. A female who's opposite of say, Raphael could make him less angry and impulsive and a female who's somewhat opposite of Donnie, could show that he needs to trust his instincts sometimes and not always rely on his calculations.

I'm not a fan of a human and non-human relationship. Interspecies relationships in a show about anthropomorphic animals doesn't seem weird but when a human is involved it is. I never liked or understood the appeal for the Goliath/Eliza pairing in Gargoyles.

Now Donatello having a crush on April could've been cute like the way it was handled in past incarnations, but they took the obsession a little too seriously in the Nick show.

Humans regard ourselves so highly and so "different," but what are we really. :P

Although it's an interesting debate imo - and one that humankind takes way too seriously since we are only ever talking about fiction and only ever (I assume!) will be. Makes it interesting to watch people react though. Characters that are still very similar to humans end up lumped with the same amount of "NO" as if, I dunno, someone were suggesting getting friendly with Mr. Ed the talking horse. :tlol:

This kinda struck me as a move that they could do that would work well with the de-aged cast. Let April and Casey BE a couple.....for an episode or 2, and have her see that he's to immature and it won't last. Introduce a 3rd character for APRIL to choose to be with. Maybe then Donnie and Casey will wise up and step back so April can be happy.

But like that will ever happen.

Yeah, I've never understood what is so "special" about us HUMANS that we consider ourselves so much "better" than any other creatures/beings. I mean, if green-skinned (albeit alien) gals are good enough for Captain Kirk, why wouldn't a green-skinned GUY be "good enough" for April? So what if he's got a shell? Twi'lek chicks have those head-tail things, but apparently, even Jabba wasn't turned off by that (and it's weirder for HIM than it would be with, say, Han- for obvious reasons....) And then there's Hepzibah from the Starjammers, whose entire race are basically cat-folk. Yet she had a relationship with Warbird (and presumably also with Corsaire, though I don't recall for certain). Goliath/Eliza, Beauty/Beast, etc. It's all relative between what WE consider attractive/acceptable, to what other cultures or species would consider so in fiction. For instance, would WE even be considered attractive to other races? Would a cat-man consider a human woman suitable as a possible mate/partner/whatever? Maybe, maybe not, but who are WE to judge? It hardly matters what the individual LOOKS like, if they have other qualities that are attractive to someone or make them a suitable match.

I agree. People seem to think that only looks matter. Some will say they shouldn't be together because he's a turtle. Well no, he's a mutated turtle, capable of human speech, feelings intelligence ect. She'd be going out with a mutant, not an animal, like an actual turtle, dog, ect. Goliath/Elisa or Belle/Beast are often supported but not Donnie/April? I don't get the logic behind that. Belle can go out with a human turned beast like hybrid with horns and fur and claws but April can't go out with a green skinned mutant with a shell?

There's much more to love than just looks. Characters in interspecies relationships obviously look beyond that, as they recognize qualities that seems appealing to them, whether they are humans, mutants, aliens, ect. If one disagrees on them being a couple, that's fine, but the sole reason because they are a different species? It doesn't seem like a good argument.

I pulled up that story for a read... quite well written. I shall have to see if she's written anything else.

Actually, I need to find some good TMNT fanfic period. I should go start another thread and ask for recommendations...

Back on topic, what if April ended up with HUN?

Or Irma. Either of those would send plenty of heads spinning. :tlol:

Oh, yes, she certainly has! I'm sure Seeker won't mind if I play publicity manager for a moment to toss a new reader her way. Here's her FF page:

Also, we have a thread for recs here already, I believe- it's in the fan-works section of the forums. Plenty of good ones in there!

On the second point- That would certainly be interesting! Heck, I've even heard arguments in favor of Karai at this point. Not entirely sure I don't agree with that one, either. It would at least be different....

Same thing also goes for characters in interracial relationships or even characters in gay/lesbian/bi/asexual/trans relationships, as well;to me, in it's core, it's all about 'what they have in common' with each other that brings them together through the good and the bad times; platonically or otherwise.

Where's the neither option?

both are very annoying around her and they'd all be more tolerable if none of them had a crush on her.

I still wish April was more of a sister.

Personally I think April should be with Donnie.

Don't get me wrong, I like the April/Casey pairing too.

So far as I've seen Casey only seems to be seeing April as a conquest since through out season two. As we do hear him say "I was wondering when we're going on a real date?" To which April just coyly says "Who says this is a date?" And he does possessively treat her as something to be protected and defended.

In Donnie's case however yes his actions come across as creepy, but remember April is the first and only girl he has ever encountered or met. Every other person of the female variety he has seen on TV. So you can't expect a person who has never encountered or known a person of the opposite gender to understand how to act around that person.

And generally when Donnie calls April, "My April" "My Sweet Princess" ect. He does back peddle and apologize for saying that because he knows such comments are pushing things further then they actually are. And also they are at moments when he's worried or excited.

Such as when Donnie calls April his sweet princess in "Karai's vendeta. He had been completely worried about her because she was facing a person she logically couldn't fight on her own yet and he wasn't able to come to her aid. So when he hears she's okay he's so elated that the "My sweet princess" comment just slips out. Though he has later grown to see her more as an equal member of the team.

However he has mostly kept things at April's pace. When ever he has hugged April, it was April who initiates it. Donnie initiates a hug only once and when April shows she's not interested he respects that and doesn't push it.

Also whenever Donnie is kissed by April, this is also something that April has done on her own. She hasn't kissed Casey ever in the nick version...at least not yet. She has occasionally hugged him though.

And even now the crush is still present, but Donnie has grown enough to let the crush define his relationship with April.

In other versions such as the 2k3, yes Donnie did have a crush on April that doesn't go anywhere. But that's all it is a boy hood crush and he does have a sort of luke warm relationship with Casey because of it.

Later when we get to the Fast Forward series, it is mentioned that Donnie and April do have a child together. Not a literal child though... The child in this case is a business...O'Neil Tech. The first episode of fast forward it's mentioned that April and Casey were the founders of O'Neil Tech, but the second episode revealed that Donnie as also one of the founders. There wasn't anything talked about beyond that, however but I can imagine that Donnie and April were largely the business partners, and Casey was just there as a figure head.

So when it comes to a relationship between Donnie and April in any form. Yes it can be a platonic, brother/sister friendship. Or yes it can be a literal figurative relationship.

And even if April and Donnie do end up together, the fact they aren't able to physically have children shouldn't stop them from being together. They D

I mean look at Goliath and Elisa's relationship. It's mentioned in one of the SLC Issues that were produced by Greg Wisemen that Gargoyles mate for life. So for Goliath he didn't believe he would have anyone beyond Demona. It's Elisa who initiates the relationship with him, however she also acknowledges in show that the two of them could never honestly be a couple.

And in one of the SLC comics, she has a moment where she tells Goliath that she feels they should see other people because she wants normalcy and she can't have that with him. So she attends a Halloween Party with Morgan while Goliath attends it with Delilah (a Cloned hybrid of Demona and Elisa) and the two of them are completely miserable being apart.

For April's part she likes both boys for different reasons. She likes Donnie because he genuinely cares about her as a person. He helps her learn, understand, and control her psychic powers by studying them. He has gone out of his way to help save her father three times now. And this would be something he would have done regardless of whether he was in love with her or not. After all 2k3 Donnie did help April find help her Uncle and he did that as her friend, not because he wanted any sort of gratification out of it.

Casey on the other hand she likes as a friend. And she does show that yes their relationship is the visual norm or the amatory normative as it were. I.E. Other humans would understand a relationship between a human girl and human boy. But not a relationship between a human girl and a mutant Turtle.

But April herself isn't human as this has been revealed at the end of "Kraang Conspiracy" This is a plot point that hasn't been brought up or mentioned since, but so far only the Turtles (and possibly Splinter) and April know of it. The Turtles have not discussed or talked about April being part Kraang since it's revelation because they know that's a touchy subject with her. And they want her to accept it on her own time.

Casey is ignorant of this however and just believes April is a normal girl...who happens to have psychic powers.

This last episode where April and Casey were together felt like a litmus test of her relationship with Casey. Because when they come out of the movie theater, Casey is prattling on about the movie but April is expressing some feeling uneasy about everything and how she would like some normalcy in her life. And then when Casey doesn't act like he's listening she starts saying he head has gone missing. It's only when he leaves he does show he was listening to her he just wasn't paying attention to her.

However if she had been having that conversation about normalcy with Donnie, it is probable that the conversation would have been different.

*nod* If the individual is a walking, talking biped who freely consents to things by their own choice, then that is the business of the pair.

Cripe, if they are humanoid and can snuggle up with you and watch a movie and discuss it afterward - this is a fellow person; who may have simply come in a different package.

TMNT's shellyness could technically I guess be regarded as something akin to a physical condition. Now - art styles that make them FAR more animalistic, I can entirely understand objection to that and agree. But as for their portrayals that make them far more similar to humans and are either hybrids or could be suspected of being such... come on.

For generations we've had young women encouraged to focus on what's on the inside of a guy rather than the outside. Often deny their own need for physical attraction and in it's absence look for the great person within. Is it really any surprise that we have portrayals of female human characters capable of doing that and falling for male characters that aren't human? Or that there are female fans who do the same and wind up with a small crush on a favorite character? :P I mean if female fans are more okay with it (be it April and Donnie or what ever) than male fans... I'm not that surprised.

In other incarnations, I would have to go with April/Casey. But since they already paved a back door in 2012 with April not being full human, and considering I just don't like this Casey, I would say Donnie.

Yeah, I could agree with those sentiments. He did after all start this crush by seeing her at a distance and declaring her the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. Rather than, say, saved her, got to know her, and figured out over time that they have much in common. (Not that he still couldn't find her pretty from the start or anything.)

Might be nice to have some other girl came along that he realizes he clicks with, and then see how internally he deals with the idea of letting go of April and later hindsight.

Sigh. Despite my hatred for the Donnie and April in nick, I still like the idea of it because it's a very interesting concept when taking it seriously, meaning to do it right, you would need to take in consideration of the viewpoints of two very different species and put in the right conditions to make it believable.

As much Donnie would look like an alien reptile morlock to April, to him and even if he had seen humans on a six basic channel television set with a satellite made out of coat hangers, April from his perspective, probably looks like a weird albino simian like animal with mange. Donnie is an outsider looking in to our world. To think that these two will instantly fall over heels over physical attraction (seriously girls get over yourselves because your species is not a type for all) or god forbid that she "Look into his eyes and saw his bare soul" is so laughable that it hurts.

For some, it's impossible to not feel like this pairing is coming from a place of creepy fetishism while for others it's just kind of a joke of "Oh look! He's horny! Hardy har har."

But I still think it's possible when coming from a connection that was build over time and maybe even the physical attraction part could be more acquired through....well I guess things you learn to look and appreciate that you didn't before and thoughts to maybe experiment are curious at best. That being said the first thought of both people should always be "This **** is weird."

If we transfer this into the real world, the chances of finding willing sex partners (of any species) for red-eared sliders who got turned into half-humans are pretty much nil.
Since April is part Krang and all attitude, young Mr. Jones would be well advised to keep his distance.

I don't know why. Although it certainly implies that Donnie has a thing for her and liked her as soon as he saw her kind of implies that there is some kind of physical attraction. They are both humanoids so one could find some traits that are appealing but no one said it had to be an intimate relationship. Even if they couldn't breed and have kids, has no one heard of adoption?

I dunno about "NIL"- I've seen plenty of folks on fan-art sites who would literally JUMP at the chance if those boys were real. Apparently, green skin and a shell isn't as much of a deterrent as one might think.

I like Donnie/April pairing as a guilty pleasure. However, I'm aware of the flaws and that it could be handled a lot better. As it's been stated before, April is very underdeveloped and the writer's ideas of making her more relevant are "give her special abilities so she can fight alongside the boys" when she was fine acting as an agent and data collector for the turtles in the OT; she utilized her skills as a reporter to help the team. We still don't even know what her hobbies and general interests are.

They've at least toned down Donnie's swooning in later episodes, which is a huge improvement. Character romances are more believable when they've not being shoved in your face for 80% of the episode.

Despite being a fan of the pairing, I wouldn't mind seeing Donnie move on and find someone else like Jhanna. Guess I just like seeing Donnie shipped with any chick as long as it's believable, lol.

I'd honestly say neither. I think it'd be better if she had some other character as a boyfriend. Surely I hope them being green would be the least of it for most. If anyone has an issue with green... what year is it in the world of a species that comes is a diverse range from very pale to very dark? AND people with many tattoos making themselves all kinds of colors? lol

The shelly aspect... well I guess that varies per person I suppose in what you're capable of looking past or not.

I suppose there are other *cough* details that are more the main source of freak outs if one lets one's mind wander too far in speculation... but whether someone imagines that being in a way that's ok enough, terrifying, compatible or not at all... well, that obviously comes down entirely on very individual...what's that term... headcanon? Obviously one person's horrifying idea does not necessarily translate into what another person imagines in that regard.

Any "romantic" interest, maybe, but they've all crushed on April to various degrees across almost all media. So the idea of one of them being attracted to her isn't really the issue, it's the awful way this show has approached it that's the problem.

But April kisses Donnie on the lips in that scene. And Donnie is the only guy she's ever kissed in the show.

I believe it was Warhorse who pointed out that when April was confiding in Casey in Buried Secrets she had friend zoned him. And Ciro had commented that April does have feelings for Donnie.

At this point April likes both boys for different reasons.

Casey because he's the first human who she can confide and commiserate about the Turtles with.

And Donnie because he's always there for her and listens and cares about how she thinks and feels.

She knows when she makes a choice she is going to have to hurt one, which she isn't looking forward to. And her outing with Casey in deadly venom felt like a litmus test for which boy is better for her, because she has a point where she is commenting about feeling uneasy about how things are and how she wishes there was some normalcy.
And Casey prattles on about the movie they watched without paying her any mind.

If it had been Donnie listening to that...perhaps the conversation would have been different.

I voted for Donnie just because it's different, but I'd say wait a little while so that he can grow up and not fawn over her all of the time and so April can gain a little maturity to actually make up her mind. The thing that bugs me is that everyone is calling out Don and Casey on fighting over April, but they don't call out April for allowing it. To me, it seems like she's teasing them by leading them both on with some of the comments she makes, such as in "The Manhattan Project" when Casey said that he wanted to go on a real date with her, and she says, "What do you call this?" and the "My mutant" comment to Donnie. She seems to be enjoying the attention both boys are giving her and isn't rushing to make a choice. Some may think she's confused as to who she likes more, but the more I look at things, it seems to me that she's just leading them both on for her own amusement. I just wish that she would choose and get it over with.

I'm interested in seeing Donnie have a crush on April for one reason and one reason alone: it's heartbreaking. TMNT is essentially a sad story because the turtles will never experience conventional relationships because they are the only of their kind. Donnie's crush adds weight to this idea. To have them get together would fly in the face of this theme.

Yeah, that's actually the only part of it that bugs me, too. April may not want to hurt either of them by choosing one, so instead she just keeps delaying things, ensuring that whatever choice she DOES make will just be that much worse for the other one. I mean, I kind of had that same thought about her "date" with Casey in Deadly Venom, where he was just going on about the movie, and didn't seem to be listening to her, until right at the end when he showed that yes, he WAS listening, but just didn't want to worry about all that stuff. He's like Mikey in some respects, living in the moment and ignoring whatever he feels doesn't matter at that exact point in time. He deals with things as they come, and doesn't sweat it.

Donnie on the other hand, worries about EVERYTHING. Seriously, the guy is probably giving himself ulcers before he's even out of adolescence by the amount of spazing out he does over even small things. But because he's so detail-oriented, and pays so much attention to everything around him, he sees when there is something wrong with April and he is quick to do what he can to fix it. Pretty sure she's picked up on that, too.

But all this just means that when she finally decides to pick one, it's going to have a MUCH bigger impact because she has been taking so long to make up her mind. And they will both be affected by that. Whether she realizes that or not, is another matter.

There is a cure.
In the upstate farm story arc, they say that 'turtles don't belong in the woods, they belong in the sewers.'
Actually, they - who were red-eared sliders originally - belong in tropical or sub-tropical waters, so if I was a mutated turtle, I'd get myself moving south to Florida, Louisiana, maybe Bahamas, Guadeloupe.....or even try to figure out a way to get to Hawaii.
Lots of bad guys to battle in Miami, and even Honolulu has enough crime to keep at least Magnum P.I. and a few of his buddies busy.
One look at what's on the beaches of south Florida or Waikiki, and Donnie wouldn't even remember who April is or what all the fuss was all about.

Heh, sliders live as far west as the Big Bend area of Texas/Mexico border. Ideally, they'd be living it up on the bayous of Louisiana, living on shrimp, crawdads, and catfish, frog legs, gator tail- dang, why don't they move down there, again? Sun, good cooking, and plenty of isolated space to roam. They could be like Southern Bigfoots....

Yep, I agree that whoever April chooses it's going to impact the one she doesn't choose and that makes it harder on both of them. Or she may not choose either and just stay single for a while until she can work out who she likes more. Either way, all three parties have a bit of maturing to do.
