You know, when thinking about this movie, I thought back to the 'Gotham knight' direct to video feature they did for the Nolan batman films, and was wondering if the same idea might not help the tmnt series of films. Put a good anime studio in charge of it, get a team of writers who know the turtles, and you could do an anthology of animated segments to bridge the gap between films. Myself, I'd do something like this;
First Segment: Raph centered- The turtles are settling into their new lair, and Raph's having issues with his anger. Everything grinds to a halt, when splinter wanders away in a Daze, and the turtles follow him back to the old lair. There, they find the now-homeless and crazy eric sacks is now calling himself the rat king. And exposure to the mutagen after the last flick has given him control over rats. The rat king controlling splinter to attack the turtles, Raph must reach through his sensei's rage at being controlled, and bring him back to himself. After battling and freeing their master, the turtles cut a deal with the rat king to take their old lair, while leaving them and their section of the sewer in peace.
Segment two: Donatello centered- Looking for clues on their origins, as well as the Foot's next move, the four turtles go back to investigate Sacks Tower, now supposedly closed off after the battle with shredder. but instead of answers, they find a swarm of mousers ready to chomp them to bits. Guided by the foot's new Tech expert, Baxter Stockman, the little robot monsters eat their way through the building trying to chomp the TMNT. Donnie must use his techno know-how to help his brothers escape the collapsing tower.
Segment three: Mikey centered- Micelangelo learns about a circuit of underground street racing in new york, and convinces his brothers to enter the Turtle van in the race, against splinter's instructions (being inside the van all the time, nobody can see them). The foot sees this as a chance to be rid of the turtles, and Hires Hun and his purple Dragon Street gang to take them out. (see in the filming pics)Mikey has to come up with a plan to get them out of this mess he got them into.
segment four: Leo centered- Karai, promising a temporary truce, offers to meet with the four turtles at Sack's old mansion if they come by themselves (no splinter or April). Once there, the kunoicihi reveals to them a story about two men named Hamato Yoshi and Ororku Saki, and hints there might be more to their clan war- that the turtles and Splinter were the reincarnations of Yoshi and his four sons. But before Karai can tell them more, they are betrayed by an ambitious young foot lieutenant named Pimiko, who sees the opportunity to move up in the ranks by getting rid of the turtles and Karai all at the same time, setting fire to the mansion and attacking with a full squad of Foot Ninja (the replacement for the foot soldiers after their failure in the sacks fiasco) Karai temporarily allies with the turtles, in a brutal and bloody fight with the foot ninja to escape the burning mansion. After getting out just as the flames consume the building, Karai executes Pimiko for her treachery, before warning the turtles that the next time they meet, in will be as enemies. As to Master Splinter, he will say nothing about their supposed Origins Karai revealed, only looking away in silence...
That's just what I'd do, scaling back the turtles big bulky designs and cutting back on their gear a bit (artistic license), focusing on the turtles for most of the story, and taking April down to only a few cameos in the entire thing. With a different team of writers, and a different creative staff, a DTV would allow for things like brother bonding time, character development for the main characters, introducing TMNT characters to the movie universe that the films will never get around to using, while neatly tidying up all the loose ends and terrible plot holes from movie one. Will it change the suck factor of the films? No, but the terrible Bay transformers films did produce a series of comic books tie-ins that were not only AMAZING, but actually made the TF film universe likeable, and actually entertaining. Why could not the same be done for the TMNT films, but in a different medium? Just a thought...
(oh, and please save the 'I'd rather have a DTV of the mirage/IDW/Archie/whatever universe' for another thread)
