I dont know how many of you have noticed it but this is something very serious! Two days ago when i went to facebook it showed me a message that the profile has been closed, without giving any reasonf or that! Then i try to create a new Shredder profile and it told me this:''We ask from all users to use their own real name in facebook''. Then i checked the profiles of people that i had added in my friend list that also have tmnt characters names(mostly they were shredders too and foot members) and i noticed that most oft hem has been deleted too! By doing it facebook is hutrting tmn! Not only delete our profiles but it dosent let us create a profile with a name of a tmnt characters. Nickelodeon enemies must have paid lot of millions for facebook to do that! Your opinions? Discuss!!!

Facebook is heavily cracking down on people who use fake or "gimmick" names. A lot of people I work with in the wrestling business have had problems with it, especially. Most of them specifically do NOT use their real names on Facebook, for obvious privacy reasons, yet still want to interact with fans and other people in the business (since nobody in wrestling knows anyone else's name either, usually... I mean you only ever see each other when you're in-character). Or still more will have both a Public FB page with their performer name, and also a Private FB page just for friends and family, using their real name.

For some reason FB has been seriously going after people since like October. I'm not sure why but I have noticed that I suddenly can't recognize any of the names on my Friends list, and that's not something I'm a fan of. I think they need to leave it alone.

Well, FB is picky anyhow about extra accounts and accounts that aren't just plainly you.

I'd once had several accounts set up with some similar names and, in particular, very similar emails via semi-temp email accounts, i.e. Indigoerth1@, Indigoerth2@. (Don't ask, it was for game cheating so I didn't have to bother others when I needed some stupid item. lol) They eventually caught on and I lost most that were too similar. (I created some new extras later, but I had to give them more variety.)

So, I don't know if it would be a distinctly TMNT thing or rather just names they've caught on to.

Personally FB needs to pull the stick out of it's butt over that. They claim it's to protect people, as if you're scamming with a fake identity or something, but come on, most aren't.

I don't really see the point off making RP accounts on FB unless it's your own intellectual property or persona.

No it was not a RP account. I had it since 2008 i created both to communicate with friends and also to organize Foot Operations . FB claims that they do it because there are criminals that they use facebook too, but deleting profiles with nicknames is not the solution to the problem. I already told about it to all of my friends and some of them decided to delete their profiles(even though not all of them have nicknames as their facebook names) because they believe just like me that internet must be free and not censored by big companies like fb or any other!

What a shame, Facebook seems to hate the Shredder xD.

They hate turtles too , there are lot of Turtles profiles that has been deleted!

Facebook is sh*t. Who cares? They want to be able to sell all of your personal info to other companies.

Also, I don't think this belongs in this sub-forum.

BubblyShell22

I don't know what this is about, but I don't think FB hates TMNT. Maybe they're doing this as a way for people to use real names. I'd love to have an FB account that's not my real name, but if I can't do that, then I just won't go on there. I'd rather go on Tumblr, and I suggest you do the same, dude.

Okay "Casey". Just ribbin' ya, sailor. :tcool:

I think I set mine up as "athlete" or "entertainer" so that could be why I haven't been hassled. ((Knocks wood)) I don't really care about FB but it's pretty much required for the wrestling business. I try and have some fun with it sometimes. Too many people playing "Look at me! I'm special!" though.

I sorta don't, I have my middle in place of my last. (Don't tell FB! lol)

Wouldn't it be terrible if Oroku is a legit surname and someone with it who's a Turtle fan decided to name their kid Saki? They could never have a Facebook account. lol

Facebook is stupid like that though. I've heard of Native American folks having to fight with them due to some last names or whatnot over regular legit accounts. Shame.

How is FB censoring the internet? Their site their rules. Don't like it or can't abide by their rules then don't use it. It sounds like they're trying to help you by making you stop role playing.

That's ridiculous. He said it wasn't even a RP account, and others are having the same problem because they use pseudonyms. Heck, a lot of people on FB don't want to use their real names for privacy reasons, whether they're famous or not. And it's a shame that they can't do that now, because FB wants to keep "criminals" out, but they're going about it all wrong, if that's the case. You don't weed out bad apples by tossing out good ones, too. That's just stupid. And rules or no rules, if it's HURTING your customer base, it's just BAD BUSINESS.

Not entitlement, just stating the simple fact of what it was created for. SOCIAL media, NOT advertising. It was/is a format for people to keep in touch and communicate on-line with personal news, photos, etc. It was NOT created as an on-line yellow-pages. Sadly, that is what it's turning into. Capitalism at its finest..... And incidentally, they HAVE considered charging in the past. Ended with a mass protest that got the idea nixed. Anybody remember that?

Yet they can pull down profiles just because it HAPPENS to have a fictional character's name. Hmmm, I'm sensing some possible future backlash.... I mean, what are the odds even that some pedo creep is going to name their profile something like "Sailor Moon" or "Leonardo Hamato", anyway? This isn't going to root out that kind of crap- if anything, it's just going to make them more creative in how they "hide". By making up fake names or using some random name from the phone book or whatever. How would anyone ever KNOW that's not their REAL name??!

BubblyShell22
06-30-2015, 09:04 AM
Yep, exactly. As long as you have an e-mail address, anyone can log on as anything. But this is the way these sites run, and it's sad. FB is a sh*thole which is why I'm not on it. They just want to control everything and everybody when it was simply created for people to stay in touch with each other.

Except that it makes no sense at all. RP is exactly that. It's playing a character in a story, whether it is LA, pen and paper, or online. If someone wants to RP as Shredder or Darth Vader, who gives a crap? It does nothing to hurt the franchises they were from. If someone is "in character" when they are logged in, who is that hurting, and why does it even matter? It doesn't. For that matter, I've had friends who used the name of a favorite character, just because they like it, or even make up a name that fits how they see themselves. Now they will have to change them, because some dimwit decided it would discourage the criminal element, which it won't.

The pan-fandom game I moderate requires that there be a disclaimer in every player's userinfo stating who owns the characters, and that they're not being used to make money.
During the very few times that a Cease and Desist has been sent our way, we complied. That person could no longer play that character, and we made that canon off limits for further application.

Whether or not something is detrimental to the value of a property is up for the license holder and the courts to decide, not some rando on Facebook who thought it'd be funny to pretend to be The Hulk in their off time.

This exactly. Fair use has been reasonably well established in copyright case law, but there are enough grey areas to allow IP owners to protect their rights through the use of lawsuits that sometimes border on frivolity. Companies like Facebook and others are most likely to decide that the costs (spending many thousands or millions of dollars defending the rights of their users as well as the non-zero risk that they might lose on some technicality that hasn't yet been considered by the courts) aren't worth the gains (a trivial amount of added time these users are browsing the site and contributing to advertising revenue). It's a business decision, plain and simple.

When FB was created you had to have an email address to a certain school to sign up. FB was never created for role playing.

MsMarvelDuckie
06-30-2015, 06:52 PM
Um, read my post again, please. I never said it was CREATED for role-playing, I said it was for social interaction. And believe it or not, most role-playing is exactly that. It's done between individuals as a form of social "gathering" and being involved in a community.

And an e-mail address is all that's ever really been required. So one could use an e-mail for a fake name, and they wouldn't say boo- unless you use a fictional name in your profile. Which is basically the same thing. The only difference is they don't care who is behind the e-mail, just the public profile. It's obviously got more to do with some companies not wanting their IP's used as profiles, than any kind of safety or security issue.

And like others have said, it could be based on copyright law in that they don't want people using copyrighted characters names, and if that's the case, they have the right to do that. People act like this is the end of the world when it's not. Go to some other RP site or go on Tumblr and RP.

Leo656

Not as simple as just that, though. As I've said, lots of wrestlers don't have a FB under their real name and rely on FB to network and get more gigs. Pretty much nobody knows anybody by their real name. It causes a lot of confusion when promoters are trying to find talent or vice/versa. A LOT of guys I know are going through a huge nonsense hassle over it. Like it's not the end of the world but it's a huge pointless inconvenience all the same. *I* don't wanna deal with it, I know that much.

MsMarvelDuckie

That's exactly what I've been saying, too. Plenty of people who just want to use the name of their favorite character from (fill in the blank) for privacy reasons or whatever, or even just to express themselves on-line, and not for RP or anything else. Inconvenient for folks who've had the same profile name for years, and then friends and family have to either be notified that they have a new account, or just end up losing touch. It's an unnecessary hassle on both ends, but more so for the users.

It's especially fun to see people with names like "IMLILLYSHEMURR" or something like that. Not "John Smith" or "Keving Ortega". But some Hungarian teens don't use their real names. Nuh-uh. They do it like in twitter land. Also, add a "h" to their names because that looks really cool. Those kind of people will be considered as fake, too? And only just the Hungarian teens are so dumb to do that?

Most of the time, they'll ignore you as I've seen that happen to some writers I know. So, FB could be the same way about it. It's also like the whole Do Not Call List. You put yourself on it, but the telemarketers still find a way to call you regardless.

You can report them all you want, but the real test will be if they listen to you about who's trolling you.
