& we thought what we got was bad.

What the hell were these guys doing? My God. I can't fathom even thinking about going in this direction, let alone having it developed to this extent.

The one Foot design with yellow eyes is better than the ones we saw on screen, but that's not saying much.

One thing of interest is the Shredder suit powered by mutagen. I guess that old super soldier plot was going to involve him as well.

Sorry to be That Guy, but I think this is the right link: http://comicbook.com/2015/07/05/alternate-shredder-foot-clan-designs-for-teenage-mutant-ninja-tu/

(I noticed that clicking the comment link sent me right down to the Independence Day article instead, so that's probably what happened here. Unless the site's more broken than just that?)

Anyway, on topic... Yikes. That movie was just never ever gonna be any damn good at any point, huh?

Ohhh more concept art.

The hell?

Well done on the art side...but not for TMNT. People just don't seem to recognize the line where things stop being TMNT; that isn't TMNT, that's armor sets for a reboot for World of Warcraft (or similar game) in year 2025.

Some of the concepts that have surfaced have been interesting to say the least. Though on the plus side, I guess, the majority of them not for the better.

(Link didn't go to the page directly, just fyi, but saw the headline on the left of the page so all's good.)

How the hell do people who work on an established property manage to completely screw up designs that are relatively simple?

I mean my god, the designs for the Foot Soldiers and Shredder are just standard ninja gear and a helmet. Why do the keep trying to make them into cyborg warriors or something?

It's like they're trying to make up for something. A bunch of di art waving, "look how NEW I can make it!"

*looks around for newspaper to roll up*
*notices lack of newspaper*
*picks up graphics tablet and smacks artists with that instead*

It's not old... it's fundamental elements.

Robo Shredder/Foot only work if you're transporting the Turtles to year 2500. If this is supposed to be real and modern day - look around. No one is out there wearing robo SWAT team armor yet.

Those I will admit are too different to be Shredder.

Rest of the movie aside Shredder's armor was like the coolest part of the whole thing. It was metal armor with retractable blades. He could launch them which I guess was a little over the top but they wanted him to have a projectile weapon.

I hate when people complain it was a Shredder transformer. Metal armor makes sense and the Transformers, especially faces, were originally inspired by samurai armor.

So it is true! Some guy was telling me that the helmet design for Shredder was the biggest hurdle for the design team.

I get it though. From everything posted so far, it looks like the mandate was to re-invent everything as much as possible.

Most of these "artists" are guys in their late 20's and early 30's. They know exactly what Shredder is supposed to look like.

The real question is, why? Who hated the designs so much, they asked for radical changes?

Also, that is some ultra derp photoshop. Holy crack baby.

Okay, I'll admit, I'm one of the biggest haters of the 2014 design. However, if you look at it, you will say, "Oh, that's Shredder! What did they do to him?!"
What's the key point of this? You can at least tell that that's Shredder. Looks like crap, but you do know it's Shredder.

These? What in the holy hell? That's not even close to what Shredder looks like. And the Foot Soldiers? There's one design that I liked in that whole mess, and that's the purple-ish looking Foot Soldier with the yellow eyes, but I still wouldn't want to see that in the movie. But oh my God, that did not look like Shredder. If they want to use these concepts, MAKE AN ORIGINAL MOVIE. Don't butcher something that has years of source material to back up for it!

Like the 1 next to V.11 (2nd photo) It has a sort of simplistic charm to it.

and the 4th pic. The big one. I kinda like it. Looks more bada$$ than what we got. It's like a shredder robocop.

Sure, though many still get the basic gist of it, right? Jurassic World didn't try to reinvent a dinosaur design by making it look like, I dunno, a giant squid? A raptor still is recognizable as a raptor?

You see, half of these designs wouldn't be bad for Krang. Robo-centric design, and Krang hasn't really had a "specific" design throughout the years.

Shredder, on the other hand, looks basically the same in every incarnation. The best way I can compare what they did to Shredder in this movie is like what they did to Godzilla in 1998: they butchered the character, gave him no character traits, and gave him a design that doesn't even remotely qualify as an addition to the source material.

That's correct. All kinds of concept art made by artists who took a two year course and call themselves artists. It's factory art. There's nothing artistic or thoughtful going on. It's rushed, lazy, halfbaked crap.

But what a surprise, you're defending it, yet again, without ACTUALLY defending it.

Here - take a look. I've quickly posted my reasons for claiming that conceptually, it isn't well thought out. I've made a list. Actual reasons the artist hasn't done his job.

True, it would; a more badass modern Hollywood design for a mechanical android body would work. No doubt they will do something along those lines.

Doing this for Shredder though... Once this armor (and to a point that of 2014) comes out it loses the human element to him. He's no longer some twisted man who's a martial arts badass and just so happens to want the Turtles and Splinter dead. Hide him in all that barely recognizable armor and now he's just become some out-of-control mechanical thing the Turtles are trying to stop. If they're stopping mechanical things, save that for the Technodrome and/or Krang's technology.

I've gotta wonder how much of this is on the artist and how much was dictated by the producer(s), though. I mean, either way is looks pretty terrible -- like a bunch of random "techy" stock photos mangled into some incomprehensible mecha-armour -- but I would assume any professional artist should be able to do their research. Unless a certain explosion-fetishist/producer was demanding a bunch of elements that made zero sense and they crapped this out in their frustration. :trazz:

(Whoops - posted this in the wrong thread last night. Gotta be careful with late-night forum haunting...)

To the point, we're seeing a lot of how the push for "detailed realism" is totally mangling otherwise classic designs for no good reason these days.

For an example, here's something taken directly from this tweet by comics artist Jordan Gibson (https://twitter.com/gibsoncomics/status/616990713188847616). Though it refers to video games and not movies, I feel like they're chasing the same goals a lot of the time and the criticism applies equally here:

http://s13.postimg.org/k1q8anl8n/bb_example_from_jordangibson.jpg

Obviously the first example is from a cartoon and can't be applied directly to a live-action movie. But it's a slick, appealing design that could have some textures and subtle armour elements added to it for "realism" and still look great in live action. And at one point that might have happened, and the best designers working in movies still get this. But unfortunately there's a really dumb train of thought nowadays that taking a simple, elegant design and cluttering it up with extra bits and pieces and straps and armour plating, and bulking it up, makes it look more "real". And all that does is make a once-great costume look awful and horribly date the overall look of the design and the movie it's in. You want an example, look at almost any superhero redesign in the early '90s - pouches and shoulder pads and pointless headpieces look as stupid now as all of this tech-hoodad overload will look in a handful of years (or, hell, already). And that kind of thinking is all over the BayTurtles character designs as a whole.

The Arkham Knight Batman Beyond skin only looks like that because of Batman's armor costume, which I believe is his version of riot gear. At least that's what I remember hearing.

For comparison, here's Arkham City's Batman Beyond skin

http://i.imgur.com/MoN31Ui.jpg?1

Same company, probably same designers. Much more faithful design to the original.

Kinda off topic and off point, but just offering maybe some clarification and perspective.

Bry
07-06-2015, 05:23 PM
Oh, sure - though you can see part of a more "classic" DKR Batman skin to the right of the redesigned Batman Beyond, so I don't think they were handcuffed to the armour look:

http://s30.postimg.org/s4n5ymsoh/bbak.jpg

Either way, it's just not a very appealing or iconic look. Though there are people who think cluttered, over-detailed stuff like this looks more "realistic" or "hardcore" or whatever. That take on Batman Beyond is gonna look increasingly hilarious in a few years, while I think the one you posted is gonna look absolutely fine pretty much forever.

Relating back to TMNT... There's a reason the classic TMNT design has held up for 30 years and hasn't needed much tweaking. On the other hand, Donatello with a proton pack and 100 pounds of random tech gear all over his body? Or Megatron Shredder? I don't think they're gonna be remembered fondly once this kind of trend passes.

Yep. The classic designs with minor variations based on differences between artists will not be going anywhere.

They work, they've always worked, and whenever somebody tries to heavily deviate from them, then you know it'll suck.

BubblyShell22
07-07-2015, 07:29 AM
Exactly. Having bigger Turtles with bulky stuff on is not the way to improve them. They aren't ninja like and I can't see how they can move with all that stuff on. Either way, it sounds like they did this because they wanted the Turtles to look "cool" for people. Sadly, it didn't work.

DarkLightDragon

They changed the designs for the sake of change and tried to justify said changes by saying "Oh, it'll be easier to tell them apart and that their personalities will be worn on their sleeves." Yeah, except we already could be able to tell them apart by color mask, weapons, or how they spoke. You didn't need to give them excessive gear to give off each of their unique individualities. Sometimes more is less, yunno?

I guess you could argue that this armor is made of really high-tech material, making it as tough as plate mail but much lighter.....
Still, extremely clunky, restricting and awkward outfits for N I N J A S, which is what the Foot Clan foot soldiers are supposed to be, or at least Ninjas-to-be.
But hey, if you have 6'3 rocket launcher-proof Turtles with Special Forces backpacks, I mean, shells (.....), and a Shredder who looks like the granddaddy of all Warhammer 40K Chaos Space Marines, outfitting his foot soldiers like 15th century medieval knights makes sense.....maybe.....or not......

I always point out the same thing with any new Superman costume. Oh, they'll mess with it sometimes. But it's Always and Forever going to look One Specific Way on the greeting cards, birthday party napkins, calendars, and general media that the masses consume. It's timeless, MOST people prefer the basic look over any "Modern" style tweaking, and it's the one they always go back to eventually. "Superman with jeans, T-shirt, and a crew cut" will NOT be part of any kid's Birthday Party theme, ever. EVER.

Same with TMNT and their general look. "Classic" doesn't mean "Old" and definitely not "Bad". "Classic" becomes "Classic" for a reason, while 99% of "modern reimaginings" quickly fall by the wayside, forgotten.

The sooner these new TMNT movies and their hideous designs are forgotten, the better. It CAN get worse than this, but... That would have to be the entire objective, to make it somehow worse than what they've already done.

Exactly. Everyone who's been a fan of TMNT knows who the Turtles are based on the incarnations they grew up with and have followed. So we know their personalities already and can already tell them apart. It's just a p*ss poor excuse to give them these changes. But that's the way Hollywood works.

Some of those designs actually look better to me than the ones used in the movie. One of the more traditional "shredder" ones near the end isn't that bad and the yellow foot ninja is far better. The main problem with the movie shredder design is when it goes all blade transformer robot thing so if any of these designs would've ended up doing the same thing then yeah it didn't make a difference.

Because the boots are the most important part.

Of course they are, where have you been? :P

That's one guy who's toes you'd never step on, and now more than ever, literally and figuratively.

Well, we did at least already know Oroku Saki has a foot fetish...

It's called the FOOT Clan. And not just because "a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." We know what you're up to, Saki. :shredder:

I don't have a problem with the Legolas boots. They're ridiculous, but hey, certain styles of kicks could implement those blades in a very nasty way.

The boots are funny, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be lethal.

Ye-ouch! Ya' got THAT right! That would be painful- and not to him....

Or the quote about being called the Foot because they "step on anyone in their way". And then there's that foot-tickle torture method that was so common in the OT.... What was UP with that, anyway?

They look fine to me, and yes, they look lethal too.

That they do. Actually, I think it's just a bad angle. Looks to me like they are just boot-blades that curve a bit. As a D&D gamer, I'm wondering what the damage die on those would be. I'm thinking maybe a d6? Sorry, but I've seen too many PC's with these things, and it's just what my head immediately jumps to, LOL!

http://comicbook.com/2015/07/05/alternate-shredder-foot-clan-designs-for-teenage-mutant-ninja-tu/

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA and to think this hack was COMPENSATED for these is just beyond comprehension. It looks like Robocop fused with a Transformer while gridlocked in a stalemate Triple Threat match inside a Skynet time transport chamber pod, with Arnold's Mr. Freeze in the year 2142 and they were transported back in time to the Medieval Times scene in The Cable Guy.

Seriously, this is some of the worst concept art for a TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES movie that I can possibly imagine. The only way it is acceptable is if the story took place in an alternate timeline where in the 1400s they had advanced alien technology that they combined with the "Knight in Shining Armor" fashion of the original timeline. Hey, it's more plausible, in my mind, than having a 2014 Bluetooth Video Camera in a 1990s Megan Fox Flashback.

And how many concept artists did they actually hire for this frickin thing? It seems like there's more pieces of discarded concept art for this pathetic attempt at a film than the storyboards Moebius & Giger did for Jodorowky's Dune! At this point, they could release a 300 page coffee table book documentaring their visionless failure.

This trainwreck is gettin' better all the time, and I ain't talkin Amy Schumer! **Drops mic**

Nah, the butt has clearly evolved to try to avoid damage from such weaponry. :tlol: Try a groin, gut, or face instead.

PD has taken over the Foot Clan and nothing you nor anyone can do about it. Maybe trolling Bay and whoever instead would be more effective. (Ok not really, but I don't mind the idea of someone annoying them instead.)
