How old were you when each major series of TMNT came out? [Archive]

This thread is probably going to really date some people, and also show how young others are:

Mirage (1984) = I wasn't born yet, but I would be born the next year.

Original cartoon (1987) = I was about 2 years old.

1990 Movie (1990) = I was about 5 years old

2k3 series (2003) = I was 16-17 years old, and as a teen I was grabbed by it

Nick series (2012) = I was 26 years old.

You can do others if you like (the other movies, IDW comics) although they're pretty close in years to the other stuff which is why I didn't list them.

Damn some of us original fans are so old now. Although I think it says a lot that even 25-30+ year old adults are still interested in TMNT after so many years.

Hmm...

When TMNT were first born/sketched on paper I was 4. I had just turned 5 when the first issue was out, like less than two weeks prior (provided the release date I've seen is accurate). Heck, they were probably on the presses on my b-day.

1987 series - age 8
1990 move - age 10
Second move - age 11
Third movie - age 13
Second series - age 22
2007 - age 27
Current series - age 33

Who you calling old... :P It's an honor to have been around when TMNT came into existence. Even if I was too young for them.

P.S. There was an earthquake on my 5th b-day in '84 (being the east coast this is rare and was the only one I ever experienced until 2011)... I now think the earth was shifting under the weight of something epic - the Turtles - about to happen. :trazz:

I would'a been 2 when Mirage came out, but all I cared about comics-wise was Superman and Batman back then, since my Dad would read those to me. None of the comics stores we went to back then carried the Mirage book so I was never exposed to it until way later on.

I was like 7 when I saw the cartoon. I wanted to hate it specifically because everyone else liked it. Go f***in' figure, huh. :lol: But I liked it anyway and here we are.

Almost 8, I think, when the movie came out. Obsessed with it right away. Probably my favorite Turtles thing.

I think I was like 13 when The Next Mutation came out? I remember being on the bus coming home from high school, and me and a few buddies talking about how we were gonna go home and watch the show because it was Turtles, even though we all knew it was a piece of sh*t. :lol:

Not quite 21 when the 2K3 show started. I was the only one of my circle of friends who grew up with TMNT who gave a sh*t enough to actually watch it. I might still have a bunch of episodes on VHS somewhere; I had to work a lot when it was on so I taped it religiously for a while.

About 25 when the CGI movie came out. Liked it but wasn't overly impressed with it. There's parts of it I still think work very well, but the movie as a whole isn't super impressive anymore. It's alright.

Almost f*cking 30 when the Nick show started. And I might be showing my age, but it just doesn't appeal to me the same way a lot of the earlier stuff did. I'd still rather go back and watch the older shows or read the Archie books than watch the Nick show. I mean it's not bad, it's just not great, and while I can "accept" a lot of stuff they do, none of it at all is anything I "want" to see, if that makes any sense. Like literally not one thing about it, is how I would have done it or asked to have it done. But hey, I ain't the guy makin' seven figures off it, so f*** do I know? :lol:

Fred Wolf: 3. Not sure exactly when I got into Turtles, but I know I was in the 3rd grade when it was huge and my teacher actually called out my 2 best friends and I as some sort of TMNT experts.

Barron's flick: Almost 6. I think I first saw it on VHS.
"Out in the distance, the game's dragin' on..."

4Kids: Freshman in College. I remember my classmates and fellow nerds being really excited.

Nick: 28 and I wanna say just became a father. I remember seeing TMNT trailers on the hospital TV after either his birth or maybe it was his pyloric stenosis surgery.

Old, schmold heh. I was almost 10 when the Mirage TMNT first launched in May 1984. I first encountered it in 1989 when someone in my year at school went to the US and brought back a couple of the First Publishing graphic novels and I borrowed them to read. Needless to say I was hooked, wouldn't look the cartoon in the eye ever again, and had to get my own copies. Thankfully there was a comic store near to my school, and they had imported the books (this is prior to Penguin publishing them in the UK). You can pretty much pinpoint when I bought my copies from the version printing dates on the inside covers heh (I suspect September 1989).

I kinda understand his fear. He's turning 30 soon, isn't he? And that means the 40s will hit him before he knows. And that's when one's health begins to deteriorate as does one's overall fitness. The older you get, the closer to death you are.

Maybe people like me and CC just overthink too much about this kind of stuff?

Mirage 1984 = I was 11 years old, But never read that comic

Original series 1987 = I was 14 years old, and it was my first exposure to TMNT.

1990 Movie = I was 17 years old when the 1st TMNT movie came out, I saw it on opening weekend.

1997 Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation live action series = I was 24 years old when this show debut on Fox.

2k3 series = I was 30 years old when the 2k3 series debut on 4Kids.

2007 TMNT movie = I was 34 years old when the CGI movie debut at the theaters.

2012 Nick series = I was 39 years old when the Nick series debut.

2014 TMNT movie = I was 41 years old when the new movie debut.

I'm 42 years now, and I still enjoy TMNT to this day.

I guess I'm the oldest one here.

Not really, at least for me personally. Your life priorities may change, and yes you may drop out of some things and get into new things, but I always enjoy hearing the views of other people into the same interests as myself. I'll be 41 next week so... onwards and downwards :P

I'll bite (and incidentally date myself as among the "oldsters" here)

Mirage- 7, but turned 8 later that year

FW/OT- just turned 11, but didn't really "discover" it until....

1990 movie- 13 and just "discovering" TMNT through the movie- I'd heard of it, but wasn't really a fan until I saw the film and fell in love.

Comic Strip- just turned 14 and by now I was heavily into the TMNT, I used to cut out and keep them when I could get them (usually the Sunday strips)

Next Mutation- Probably what killed my interest in TMNT. I was 20, but turned 21 later that year. Legal to drink! (And that birthday was quite "fun", IIRC.)

4Kids- 26 when it first aired. I vaguely remember watching a few eps while living at my grandmother's place and acting as "surrogate mom" for my three cousins, but I'd fallen out of the fandom a bit.

2007 TMNT- 30 at the time it came out- barely a blip on my radar, sadly. The ONLY TMNT movie I never saw in theaters!

IDW- 34, 35 later that year. Had only gotten back into the fandom in June the previous year. Thanks, Feral Female!)

Nick- still 35, but 36 a little over two months later.

2014 movie- 37, and dreading my next birthday....

Comic series (1984): I was 5, and I didn't even know it existed.

Original cartoon (1987): I was 8, and I actually didn't even know that was a thing at the time. I was in the third grade then, and my earliest memories of TMNT are from when I was 9 (in 1988 ) and in the fourth grade.

TMNT movies 1-3 (1990, 1991, 1993): I was 10, 11, and 13 respectively.

Next Mutation (1997): I was 18, starting college, and my interest in TMNT in general was basically dead at that point. You can actually blame Power Rangers for that.

2K3 series (2003): I was 23. This actually brought my interest in TMNT back to life.

TMNT movie (2007): I was 27.

2K12 Nick series (2012): I was 33.

TMNT movie (2014): I was 35.

I wasn't even born when Mirage came out. The original show came out pretty much about the time I was born, luckily turtlemania lasted many years so I got to live it. I know I saw the first two movies on HBO or PayPerView, I don't remember which, I was still fairly little when the third movie came out since I had no idea there was a third movie, I only remember the third movie toys being on sale at the store, so I'm guessing that was a while after the movie bombed. I was the exact the right age to like TNM. 2k3 came out during my teenage years so it was barely a beep in my radar, I remember thinking it was cool that they were coming back and was interested but never really checked it out fully. And the Nick show came out when I was already in my 20s.

When I started posting in the drome most of the people here were about to turn 30 or were already in their 30s but most of them are gone, I'm guessing they got to see the OT when around my age when I watched TNM.

So, how does being married/having a kid affect your hobbies? With me being a fulltime adult and in a committed relationship, I have little if no time for things I like. I can't imagine having time for it once I'm married/have kids.

Being neir yours and Cybercubed's age is making me wonder a lot if I'm too old for this stuff. In my early teens I was a little embarrased to continue liking stuff like this but in my late teens I just didn't give a crap and that attitude I kept through most of my early 20s but being mid-late 20s has me feeling like I did in my early teens about this stuff haha.

I'm basically the same age as you, Cybercubed.

Mirage: Not born yet. Was born the following year.

Fred Wolf: 2 years old. Didn't get into the cartoon and franchise until 89/90 when Turtlemania was at it's height. At that point I was hooked.

1990 Movie: 5 years old. Although I didn't get to see the film until it came out on VHS. One of the best movies I ever saw as a kid.

Next Mutation: 11/12 years old. I was aware of the show, but had lost interest in TMNT at the time.

2k3: 17/18 years old. Same feeling as the NM at the time.

2007 Movie: 21/22 years old. Saw it a couple years later on DVD and liked it. 2009 is when I finally got back into TMNT 100%.

2012: 27 years old. Still enjoying the series.

2014 Movie: 28 years old. Saw it in the theater, should've just waited for the DVD :trazz:

I'll be turning 30 this September, but won't be losing interest in TMNT anytime soon. :tgrin:

Unless you mean people re-visiting some of the movies and video games they've enjoyed as kids such as Lion King and Pokémon. I see people of my generation having nostalgic feelings for those two a lot. Late 20s... I'll have to get there first to know if this one is true.

I agree that each person is different. I don't know about being immature in your early 20s. Some people are immature in their teens. People of my generation have nostalgic feelings for old TV shows like Lost, Angel, Buffy, etc. as well.

Its rather weird how young we were when the original cartoon was airing, yet somehow got swept into Turtlemania. It doesn't make sense really, if you were 3-4 years old when the original cartoon began by the time you were a kid the show was almost out of popularity already. By 1993 is when the TMNT fad was officially over.
Yeah, You would have to be somewhere in your teens to know of TMNT, my first exposure was with the 87 series when I was 14, that was before knowing they were a comic, and in the 90s I was reading the archie series comics.

1995-1996 = 14/15 years old, waning interest in the line as the toys and cartoon also are wrapping up (and no new TMNT characters as toys, just variants of existing characters permeate the line)

2k3 series (2003) = 22 years old, not that interested in the property at this point.

CGI TMNT movie (2007) = 26 years old, briefly reinterested in the property (but not outside the toys for this movie and the movie itself)

Nick series (2012) = 31 years old, interest fully reignited!

Nick series (2012) = 31 years old and got back into watching turtles with my boys. They got me into comics. Been hooked on Mirage and the new IDW comics ever since. Also bought the original cartoon on DVD and boys love that too.

Kids will watch any cartoon, pretty much. I watched Cartoon Network religiously in the 90s. Didn't matter to me if it was a cartoon from the 60s-70s or from the current era. As long as it was a cartoon, I'd give it a shot.

I have no idea either how I got into tmnt either. I probably got into it by watching it as part of the Irish television strand The Den. I remember first watching the OT in the early 90s when I was 3 or 4. It was regularly rerun on rte two from the mid 90s to late 00s. The first memories I had of the show were the intro and a scene from episodes such as "Enter the Shredder", "Super Irma" and "Case of the Killer Pizzas", though I didn't know what was going on at the time. As long as a TV show looked interesting, I watched it.

Mirage era (1984): Not alive

Fred Wolf Era (1987- mid 90s): Sister is born and parents marry in 94.

2003 series: 3 years old (I did catch a few episodes though growing up)

2007 movie: 7 years old

Nick show: 12 years old (full fledged fan)

Current: 15 years

Anyway here's where I am...

Mirage(1984)- 2 Months Old(so pretty much exactly the same age)

1987 series- 3 Years(didn't discover it until I was 5. After that point...HUGE fan of the show and movies for the rest of the run. Also got into the Archie comic series in the early 90's)

Movie-verses(1990)- 6 Years(seen ALL of the movies at the theater as they came out)

Next Mutation(1997)- 13 Years(actually loved the aspect/introduction of a female turtle and as a plausible romantic interest. Haven't really seen it since then, so not sure how I'd feel about the series now)

4Kids series(2003)- barely 18 still

2007 Movie- 23 years

Nick series(2012)- 28 Years

Bay movie(2014)- 30 Years

I remember getting into Turtles through introduction from a friend. It was either late summer or early fall of 1989. So I've been a fan for 26 years now. Really enjoy/love all incarnations of the franchise.

But nope, nobody in my family cared for it because my parents were in their twenties at least and my sister didn't care for it either. Then again, most of my friends don't pay attention to the franchise sadly. :ohwell:

Young fans are just as much needed as old ones; gotta keep handing down the TMNT love each generation.

I remember my mom renting VHS tapes of the '87 series from the library when I was 3-4, maybe 5 years old. Near the time 2k3 came out, I persuaded her to buy a VHS of Secret of the Ooze from the Dollar General store for $3' (that store also carried the occasional copy of "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm," good times as I recall). I had neer seen any of the live action TMNTs before. I watched that tape a lot but didn't watch any of the others for some reason.

After 2k3 ended, I needed more for my fandom and watched the 1990 film for the first time during my freshman year of high school. Then, in my sophomore year of college, I found a beat up copy of Mirage collected book 1 at a used bookstore for $10. Even though I have since bought all the Ultimate editions, I still have that old paperback.

I've been a turtle fan since I could first recognize them. My father is still patiently waiting for me to grow out of them but the chances of that are slim to none since I'm in my 30's now and still obsessed :toops:

Plastron cafe is as old as my mom. Tigerclaw is as old as my dad. I was 2 when 2003 came out. I was 5 when 2007 movie came out, I was 10 when nick came out , and I was 12 when pd film came out. I think I'm the youngest here!

Mirage (1984) = Was 11 Years Old, but never read the comic

Fred Wolf Series (1987) = Was 14 years old, my first exposure to TMNT.

Archie Series Comics (1988-1995) = Was 15 when these comics came out, but I think I started reading them in the early 90s.

TMNT (1990) Film = Was 17 years old when I saw the first film.

TMNT 2 (1991) Film = Was 18 years old when I saw the sequel.

TMNT 3 (1993) Film = Was 20 years old when I saw the 2nd sequel.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation (1997) = Was 24 when the first live action show debut.

TMNT 2k3 series = Was 30 years old when the 4Kids series debut.

TMNT (2007) CG Film = Was 34 years old when the CG film came out, but never saw in the theater.

TMNT 2k12 series = Was 39 when the Nick series debut.

TMNT (2014) Film = Was 41 years old when the 1st film in the reboot came out.

TMNT: Out of the Shadows (2016) Film = I'll be 43 years old when the sequel hits theaters.

The original cartoon and movies were still present in television when I grew up, so those were my first contact. I didn't care for the 4kids series before 2011 (when I was 24), which was when I suddenly really became a fan and began to read the Mirage series (my favorite incarnation now).

1990 Movie (1990) = I might have been a thought. Might.

2k3 series (2003) = I was 7 years old and in 2nd grade.

Nick series (2012) = I was 17 years old and a senior in high school.

* I never actually watched the Nick series until December of 2013. Freshman in college.

Let's see.
Mirage- I was born in may of 86 so the comic came out about 2 years before I was born.

87 series- a year old and some change. Not sure when I first got into it but I do know the turtles are apart of some of my earliest memories.

First movie-3 years old. First movie I ever saw in theaters.

Next mutation- 11 years old in 6th grade. Watched it but remember feeling slightly embarrassed about it. At the time I thought it was because I was growing up. Now I think it's just cause the show was pretty bad.

2k3-16 in the 11th grade. Checked it out out of curiosity and it ended up turning me back onto the franchise.

Tmnt(2007) 20 or 21 depending on what month it came out

2012 toon-26
Now I'm 29 and have plans to give up the fandom
