View Full Version : Worst Part of The 2014 turtles designs

When I see people complain about the designs I usually hear 3 problems
1. The god awful faces
2. The ridiculous size
3. The crap they're wearing
Which one of these is the worst part of the designs to you.

^ Same goes for me. Though if I gotta choose, it's between their faces and size. They are quite the ugly little devils.

I'm going with the clothes. Size maybe, if it's more like size/strength.
It's all awful, but the biggest problem for me is their size. Their massive, 'roided-out, heavy body types totally fly against them being freakin' ninjas. They weren't remotely stealthy throughout the movie and it doesn't look like they're even capable of it. Making them super-strong, bulletproof behemoths totally undercuts their skill and makes the "Ninja" part of the title and concept irrelevant. Which is such an idiotic decision I can barely believe it.

The clothes I can deal with. Running around real life NYC, at the very least shoes make sense. (Which of course is the one damn thing Raph isn't wearing... Mr. Fat Feet there can't even fit an altered pair like Leo. lol) Even tough feet could be injured running around some city like that, and last thing you need when you lack access to medical care is a nasty infection. (Yes I'm applying real life to fictional characters that prob won't ever get hurt that way, I don't care. lol)
I'd say 'worst part' (imo) is somewhat a tie between size and looks. As I've mentioned before, I can deal with them being tall this once, the steroids however are overdone. I don't want them looking too scrawny - no matter what age the film tries to suggest, I like seeing them looking like they've grown up - but an intervention on the steroids is in order. And if not that... then at the very least the overbearing shell size; they're/were Sliders for Turtley sake.
Facial looks... *sigh* Varies. There are some shots of [some of] them that are decent enough, sorta, I guess (now that I'm used to this), even dare I say just a few that I kind of adore, but there are other shots of them that just...

The superfluous clothing was the greatest sin of the three.
I just...the poor animators.
Can you imagine being the poor soul who spent day in and day out painstakingly animating all the doo-dads and thinger-ma-bobs the guys were wearing?
I almost want to start a collection to buy them a couple of cases of their favorite drink just...to try and help them take the edge off.

The designs and heights of the turtles aren't that bad to me. They have the potential to represent an even darker, intimidating version that sadly will never reach that potential. Clothes and ninja shoes would make more sense if they're going for the design of a ninja. Ironically, I could see these guys wearing actual ninja outfits. Just fix the faces and get rid of Raph's shade and Mike sunglasses and I'm good.

They are way too big to be ninjas and the fact that they crushed a car just was way over the top for me. I dislike all of the above but the size really grinds my gears the most.

I'd guess that stuff would be procedural animation, i.e. simulated. I do feel sorry for the animators though, because the designs and direction are out of their hands, so they work their guts out on something that is going to get crapped on.

The thing I disliked the most about the 2014 turtles was their size. It made it so they could just throw and punch The Foot out of their way instead of using ninjutsu to do so. The art of invisibility was made extremely harder for this version of turtles and they barely used their weapons because of their massive size and fighting style. And towards the end of the movie there is no realistic way they could have fit down in that manhole cover.

They are too big and too 'roid (especially raph and mikey).
The clothes are ok, but there are too much useless accessories.
Except for Mikey without his mask (Shrek is that you ?), their faces aren't ugly to me. I accept them for what they are : MUTANTS TURTLES

The worst part in general is probably the faces. The faces are way too human for most tastes.
The worst individual part though must be Donnie's attire. I mean seriously, glasses and goggles? You can't wear glasses and goggles at the same time! And don't get me started on everything else that just looks tacky on him.

Okay, I honestly didn't have "too big" of a problem with the Turtles. Criticizing the designs as a whole rather than each individual Turtle, the size bothered me the most. I liked the accessories, but I feel they didn't need as many as they had. It just made the CGI more expensive.
Criticisms for each Turtle:
Leonardo: Nothing really, to be honest. The only change I'd make is taking the bamboo stuff off his shell. Maybe the shoulder pads, too.
Raphael: I thought Raph was perfect, to be honest. Just shrink him a bit.
Donatello: Get that Ghostbuster thing off of his back, and get the glasses off, too.
Michelangelo: The face. This is the only Turtle face that legitimately bothered me because Mikey's face is so fat and it makes him look like a serial rapist.

^Then surely the fact that he kept hitting on Apri-wait no, Megan Fox, made that "serial rapist" aspect more prominent?

I voted for size because that was the most offensive of a bad bunch. Might have been faces, but Leo was okay so there was at least one redeeming face. The clothes, meh, I didn't hate them as much as I thought I would - Leo and Raph at least. Don was.... overly encumbered and Mikey was... well... a joke.
But the size was awful and frankly embarrassing. *shudder*

I have to say the size is what bothers me the most. They are teenages and ninjas so them being roided out makes no sense although I know the mutagen could be also what cause it.They looked so much better in the concept art where they was more slender. I like them to be 5'6 or shorter however because it makes them seem more as the underdog in fights also instead or just just punching a foot across a parking lot like The Hulk I rather see them us actual NINJA skills in fights which is less realistic with there massive size. They look bigger then me and I'm 6'3 and big which doesn't work for the TMNT formula IMHO.
IndigoErth
08-13-2015, 05:33 PM
Yeaaaah.... I haven't heard on the others, but Leo's supposedly about 6'5" while he's technically the second "shortest."
And, what, more than 2' wide at the shoulder? Not even sure if I'm kidding.
Is Donnie close to 7'?

Put me down as another vote for "all of the above". All of the above for me. The faces were just horrendous, the clothes weren't necessary and not conducive to them being ninjas with all that sh*t on, and their size was also horrible and made them indestructible which was unrealistic.

My guess is that they thought the heroes of an action movie being smaller than average humans seemed kind of silly. Granted I don't like how huge they are either, but I see why they made them bigger than usual.

Bigger = better and more macho for movies with explosions? :ohwell:
Can't have no little underdog Turtles, nooo... that's silly and a threat to some producer's masculinity to suggest the 'little guy' can do great things - "they must be BIG no, BIGGER! I SAID BIGGER! HUGE! Concept artist, why you no understand?!" (Note sarcasm of course.)

The faces I can live with, although they do look more adult than teenage-y and won't be breaking too many hearts....until they become rich & famous.
I'd imagine that the massive amount of gear has something to do with the fact that the movie is, of course, produced by adults, who seem to have trouble telling them apart otherwise, despite their differences in character and appearance. Prospective toy sales probably also played a part in the decision to outfit them like a platoon of Navy seals going into the Hot Zone unsupported.
However, I voted 'size'.
As many others have already mentioned, a huge part of being a Ninja is stealth, the ability to go unnoticed, to blend in, to strike hard and fade into the night, as it were.
Impossible if you're a 6'3, 350 lb. defensive lineman.

Every TMNT series/film/comic to date has been done by adults, & even those featuring variation in design for that same purpose (like The Next Mutation) found a way to maintain a relatively simplistic/classic appearance. Age has nothing to do with it.

I was taking a walk today and passed some manholes and thought the exact same thing. I went through all of the versions and imagined them jumping down the manhole and Bay's Raphael managed to get stuck.
I've been down manholes for a job and I can assure Bay that they don't send the big bulky guys down into the manholes for a reason.
At any rate, I chose size. The size has always bothered me. They are teens first and foremost. Not 30 year old body builders. The clothes and faces I can get over. Theres just no way in Manhattan the Bay turtles could get underground using a typical manhole and that annoys me more than anything.
You don't gotta be big to be bad.

I'm not sure Raph could even get both legs in there any deeper than this thighs. That mental image.
The manhole bit was kind of unnecessary. Obviously they keep the van someplace... presumably in close access to home? So that entrance is where exactly.

Size (way too big) and the faces.
Not too keen on all the clothing etc either, but I could have lived with it if they were the traditional size and had their traditional faces.
The photoshop version of Leo (whoever it was) did was ace, I'd have been AOK with that.
I was one of the people who was very skeptical of the Nick Turtle's feet when first seen, but now it's not even an issue...just pointing out that I'm OK with change.

After reading all of these comments, it seems like the size of the turtles is the biggest complaint. That's what took me out of it the most. Made the villains seem less threatening. As far as the faces, I thought Leo looked the closest to a ninja turtle. The others just look like monsters.
The only part of the turtles designs I really liked were the masks. I liked how they weren't perfect form fitting.
Other than that, the accessories were there for no other reason than to sell toys.
As a team of ninjas, I always felt that the turtles should have a uniformed look to them. It might have been ok to add one or two little accessories to each turtle but Leo and Donnie have so much garbage on them that it makes it redundant for them to even wear masks. Why even bother wearing uniformed ninja masks when the rest of the attire is so radically different?
IndigoErth
09-03-2015, 07:33 PM
'Cuz masks are cool, everybody knows that. :P (And on mutant Turtles kinda cute, too.)
I dunno, while Leo's chest armor is never going to do much for him in a Bay movie, the rest of his stuff is pretty much just protective gear, which I can personally give a pass to. Mikey however... I think he ran into his closet and just came out wearing whatever clung to him that day. :tlol:
Although I continue to be a smidge amused by Leo's bare knees. Of all parts to not cover? (Is this a TMNT first...? lol) And just how torn up are they by the time you get home after a long battle... Ow.

All of the above. Their designs reek of 'WTF WERE THEY THINKING???!!!'. I remember when we started seeing the official designs with all the junk on them, several people were arguing with me that 'of course they won't be wearing that throughout the whole movie, that's just their battle gear'. No, even back then something told me that was gonna be their general default look, extra crap and all.
Mikey was the main give-away. It made no sense for him to be wearing more 'chill-axy' clothes while everyone else was armed to the teeth. It was either... that was just Mikey's chill clothes and the others had chill clothes too.... or that was his 'armor' to match everyone elses. Seeing no pics of clips of the rest WITHOUT the extra crap, I already knew that was gonna be their default look and they'd be luggin that junk around 24/7. It's ridiculous. Donnie himself looks like a videogame character trying to carry all his power-ups at once.
I honestly don't know what went on at the PD offices. Never have I seen some adaptation of whatever with such a heavy change.... but then again, now that I think about it, the Transformers were also animated with ********s of bells and whistles too. Honestly only Prime looked like himself. Bumblebee had the benefit of being the only yellow robot there. Everyone else.... were just robots A and B, or these are the good guys... I think... and these are the bad guys... maybe? I could barely tell Starscream and Megatron apart at times. Big no-no.
