View Full Version : Are the Turtles super strong?

I've read on various pages and saw shows that say they aren't super strong, but are in peak physical condition. However there were moments where they almost seemed super strong. Like when Donatello ripped a piece of a vehicle in one of the episodes. (Although one could say that he used some cutting equipment off screen and then peeled it off.
I wasn't sure because there are moments like in Night of the Rogues when Slash tossed a pizzeria at Mikey and it fell on him, but he wasn't seriously injured. But then, maybe this was one of those Loony Toons moments where the Turtles manage to go through situations no normal being would be able to survive in. However there were moments where the Turtle Van fell over and all 4 had to push it back up, struggling, meaning if they all had super strength, it wouldn't have taken much effort. In the 2014 movies, they definitely seem to be super strong and have depicted super strength.
So it always confused me. Are the Turtles super strong? Or just in peak physical condition?

They're not meant to be strong at all, and that's what the horrid 2014 movie got completely wrong. They're not muscle bound Hulk creatures, they're ninja's.
Their shells offer them some degree of protection but otherwise I don't think they're any stronger than a normal well trained human.

Then they are strong, just not super strong. I mean of course they have to be fit to fight and be ninjas so yes they are strong.
In the 2014 movie they got it sort of right, if those versions were like the 2nd stage mutations in the 1987 series. xD That's what they remind me of. :tlol:

And that explains them knocking over a brick wall onto Footbots in the first episode, HOW?! I'd say that , given that they were able to push the van UP at least five flights of stairs, YES, they ARE super strong! At least as strong as, say, Iron-Man in-armor. But not Thing or Hulk strong. There are plenty of other examples, too, but those were the first two that usually come to mind. 2K3 had a few, too.

Due to their training they're probably strong compared to the average person walking down the street. But I don't think they're supposed to be super human strong. Except for the final couple of seasons of the original cartoon when they further mutated. When they had their secondary mutations, at that point they were super strong.

I always took them for being stronger than humans of similar size and muscle mass, but not to a superhero degree.
Now as for random bursts of superhero strength... I mostly just brush that off as cartoon magic. (Along with things that weirdly explode, break too easily, or whistle when they fall. lol)

In later eps, sure. But I'm talking abou the first season, which was more realistic in terms of what they were physically capable of in strength. They trashed the giant factory robots in the Technodrome, too. With weapons that should have been broken after hitting the machines with them! Youd have to be stronger than human peak to do that.

I take it you've never helped a friend move?
Human strength, or maybe the strength of a chimp. They're still biological organisms. Their mutation isn't "magic"
Definitely not Iron-Man. Haha...They aren't made of metal.

At minimum they can easily lift their own bodyweight, which right there makes them way stronger than a good portion of the human population.
Even in the mirage books they can be seen easily lifting manhole covers, and those things are 200+ lbs.
Super Strong?
probably no.
Really freakin' strong?

Never said it was magic. And that van is at least a couple of tons- that ain't no baby grand piano they were pushing UP the stairs! Gravity alone would make that virtually impossible at human levels. And yes, I've actually done plenty of moving myself, so I know what one can or can't push up a flight of stairs. Actually, that's not even counting them pushing the subway car to the lair in Nick. You cannot tell me four humans could even BUDGE something THAT massive! And remember in the 03 series when Leo and Raph carried the sofa with Donbie ON it like it was easy? Or Mikey using an 600 lb + chunk of concrete and cable as a bola in Turtles On Trial?! Sorry, but no human could do THAT. Not even at peak ability. So, yeah- not made of metal, bud definitely in the same strength class as Shell-head. I'd say better than Cap, but only by a few hundred lbs lift/carry capacity.

Honestly? Yes, in my younger years, we did stuff like this for fun:
F8br180zDTo
JfUimrdhBXE
so I know it's possible, not to mention, it's a little van.
The stripped down version is 2600 lbs - in neutral, up a 45˚set of stairs? 4 athletic men?
Very possible.

I MIGHT give you that one- but as you said, that's stripped down. Theirs wasn't- as shown when Donnie did just that once it was UP the stairs. And April was in it, too- adding another 120 lbs or so. And they are 5 ft 4 or so, and 175 lbs give or take, so- "short guys". Let's just say that I take that possibility with a heaping handful of salt.
That said, most of the other feats we've seen would not be possible for human-level strength. Smashing the Karai-bots, for instance. Like the Technodrome machines, they are metal, and are themselves stronger than humans given that they use pistons, hydraulics, gears, etc for power- something the turtles don't have going for them. Yet they destroyed those things on several occasions, and that's smashing hard steel. Or for that matter, any of the other robots and killer machines they've demolished in fights. And there are even a few in the comics, too. I'd say fighting Triceratons and even Leatherhead (on the few occasions they've had to knock him out) would prove they are stronger than humans by at least some margin. IDW- Raph smashes through a door like it's kindling. And so on....

I remember in the first season, in a fight with Bebop and Rocksteady, the four turtles managed to lift up their entire van with relative ease. If it's around 2600 pounds like an earlier comment mentioned, wouldn't that be roughly 650 pounds each person? I'm not sure, but is that physically possible for even someone at peak condition?

Lol, 15 years ago, when I was young and handsome, sure...
Ok stripped down means it's not a camper, not that it's "empty"
If we were assume the van is actually a stripped down VW, Then it weighs approximately 2600 lbs (1180 kg) and the effort is reduced by half (using the incline), then they need to push with at least 1300 lbs of force. This is equivalent to moving a 590kg mass. If all 4 push equally, they are each left pushing 147.5 lbs, the equivalent of pushing a 67kg mass.
On top of that, April is in the drivers seat, (I know I didn't account for her weight, but 120lbs isn't going to make or break this scenario given all the assumptions in place :P) Possibly giving an extra hand by accelerating the gas, or, if they were really concerned about monoxide posioning, which frankly could be an issue) at the very least, switching between neutral and the parking break, giving a helping hand to the boys.
I don't recall what floor She lived on, But I get the impression it was the second.
Beyond all of that, The thing was on wheels, reducing the amount of friction, but I'm too lazy to do that math right now.

Over the head? Not without doing serious damage to one's muscles. And they made it look easy, as you said. And in Nick, they used Mikey's shell as a battering ram on that dome they were in in the Kraang base where the portal was when they couldn't breathe the air. Leo and Raph (arguably the two strongest) bashed through a barrier that should have been strong enough to hold them. Surprised the Kraang, who probably thought it was unbreakable!

According to TMNT & Other Strangeness, Leo weights 150lbs (he's also 4,9" tall) which sounds very light.
A Green Sea Turtle can get up to 5 feet long, and they can weight up to 700lbs. But considering most Ninja Turtle incarnations can pull their heads in, which is a ability sea turtles lack due to too much muscles mass, I'd say a Ninja Turtle might weight somewhere between 250-350lbs

Mark me down for "Really strong, but not super-strong." I wrestle with a few dudes who are around my height but about 70lbs heavier (so they'd be light-to-mid 200s), with body dimensions and proportions roughly similar to those of the TMNT in the original movie, and some of those guys can deadlift about 600lbs, squat about 500, leg press about 800 and chest press about 400.
So yeah, that's "super-strong" by conventional standards, but also entirely feasible, even for people under 6' tall. There's no reason at all the Turtles couldn't be that strong, especially Leo and Raph who probably work out more than Donnie and Mike I imagine.

Okay, for your scenario earlier, that only works if they were going DOWN. That incline (which is STAIRS, not a ramp) would work against them, so they would actually have to push more than twice as hard (because the weight is pushing back against them) than they would on a flat surface or a downward incline. April's weight makes it a little harder, but it's not a camper, but probably had a lot of science and robotics equipment in the back, since it was originally Baxter's. That adds a LOT of weight! Also, they were pushing it up to Baxter's apartment, which IIRC, one of them said something about it being up five flights. April's apartment was on the third floor of her building. (I know this because in The Gang's All Here, Mikey climbed up from her fire escape, and was shown getting in from the third story window.)
As for their weight, I've calculated it out that sans shells, they would likely weigh about 150-160 due to muscle mass, and the shells ad probably about 20 to 25 lbs. So 175 to 185, would be a pretty close estimate of their weight. And most versions have them all between 5' and 5'5". April is just about a head taller. (And her boots probably add a couple of inches.)
MsMarvelDuckie

I'd say the 200 is probably a lot closer, given their short stature. Also, the shell is bone, but it is also thin and relatively light compared to larger and more dense limb bones. A small turtle shell is much lighter than one might think, and most of the weight is in the carapace, anyway.

Given that they are short even by "normal" standards, I'd say that they are just a bit above even that. Keep in mind, That chunk of concrete mentioned earlier was easily as big as Mike was, but he twirled it around like it was one of his frigging nunchucks! Needed both hands, but still.... No WAY a human could have bola'ed that walker thing Krang was in with that sucker. Same goes for that wall they knocked over on the Foot-bots. They have moved other large and extremely heavy objects before, as well, picked UP the van over their heads (as another poster noted) and tossed around huge tractor tires like Frisbees!

Way way back, WAY back - My max squat was 595 - I was around 205 - 6'3" at the time, and hardly what you'd consider "huge". I only benched 305 at my max - leg pressing 850 - but the shorter dudes bulked up much faster, and could lift much more. Linebackers - guys that had the genes to go pro - were easily putting up numbers like Leo's saying, and more.
I don't know that I'd call any of that super human, just athletic imho, but I'm not sure what's considered normal these days.

MsMarvelDuckie

Okay, I get that, but how is tossing enormous tires around like a Frisbee or picking up a fully equipped van NOT superhuman? Even linebackers and wrestlers couldn't do that with the kind of ease that they are shown doing these feats. And then there are the rooftop runs they often go out on, which would require a great deal of stamina and leg strength to run and jump that far. New York is about five miles long and two miles wide- might not seem like much, until you take into account that they are going over obstacles, across gaps that can be as much as ten feet, and up or down uneven terrain from building to building in a city of millions, often at heights of 100 ft or more, where winds are much stronger and more unpredictable.
These guys are doing things that humans would herniate themselves attempting. (Ever seen someone throw one of those huge tires twenty feet and do it repeatedly? Neither have I....) I know there are sports competitions for "strong men", but even those guys have difficulty ROLLING something that big and heavy, or carrying them ten yards or so, but the TMNT are doing discus with this stuff! And apparently carrying large pieces of scrap metal and other junk from junkyards on a daily basis. I just don't buy them NOT having somewhere above human peak strength, much like some superheroes who may not bench ten tons, but are still stronger than any peak human. (Iron-Man was just the first example that came to mind, as his armor does put him in this category- he's not as strong as Thor, Thing, or even Spidey, but stronger than Cap- who is himself slightly above peak.)

I guess when you talk super human, it's more of the leaps tall buildings stuff, or throwing shipping containers, shredding steel doors with your fingers...stuff humans could never hope to do...
FW took liberties, but it's full of inconsistency - so...Meh. If anything, it would be a nod to the working knowledge of martial arts at the time (read as David Wise), leveraging your opponents weight against them, channeling your chakras, the one inch punch, etc etc...
The series comes on the back of all those American Ninja movies, David Carradine's Kung Fu; Bruce Lee and The Karate Kid.
Strength wasn't physical, it came from within.

It's not the only one, then. In any case, I think it's pretty clear that they have shown some pretty incredible feats of physical strength across all the different versions- such as the 2007 movie, when they were fighting that giant blue monster in the construction site, or the five generals later in the film. They were hitting STONE bodies, with enough force to actually throw them!

Well there are degrees of superhuman strength, of course. You have strength ratings that range from just over human peak (Cap) to Unlimited (Hulk) and everything in between. Spidey, for instance, is rated about 10-15 tons lifting, depending on who's doing the writing. But he's rated below Thing. Batman would be human peak without enhancement. And he's not considered superhuman, but Cap is, because he's enhanced. Ant-Man is superhuman strength simply because he has strength of a full-sized human even at ant-size (which would make him enormously strong at that size), but is even stronger at giant-size because he's got giant strength at that size. (Which shouldn't even be possible, since the particles shouldn't work both ways....)
The point here is that you can have superhuman strength without going full-on Hulk with it, which is what it seems they have done. I guess I've just read enough comics to see how they fall within the ratings.

When I see them in my head, it's the movie version, which is the closest to "reality". There was nothing in the original films to indicate anything more than "really strong by real-world standards". I'm more drawn to that as a base standard over anything in any of the cartoons. Cartoons by definition have everything all exaggerated and inconsistent.
Like I said, I'll take such suggestions under advisement, but they really only half-count.

That's what they remind me of due to their huge size and they were definitely super strong. In the cartoon, it seems inconsistent and had loony tune moments where they survived things no human could survive. You never see them lift cars like Bebop or Rocksteady.

Like in the Big Zipp episode where he bends two buildings like they're rubber to stop one from falling, when you can't bend a skyscraper like that without it being destroyed.
I't just temporary and the building probably evacuated (even if it's definately extreme). For example, skyscrapers in Japan are built to stand giant Earthquakes (New York City has not many Earthquakes, but in the cartoon it could have been those skyscrapers built after "Return of the Technodrome"). Big Zipp could maybe use psychokinesis powers to hold it for a while (as long as we saw it). In other episodes, we often saw buildings falling apart all the time (starting with "A Thing About Rats"). In Sky Turtles, it was probably just "good luck" they fell to the right place when gravity in New York City turned ordinary again.

Yeah, I already mentioned that one, too. That one actually sticks out as a prime example of superhuman strength. Along with Mikey and the giant concrete bola, or those huge machines they were bashing into scrap metal in the Technodrome. Or Leo slicing Traag to pieces in Nick. Being a huge mountain of living stone would require more force behind the blade than a human should be capable of. Yet Leo did it without much difficulty.

If they are already super strong, what's the point of their 2nd stage mutations? I thought they had above average strength and the whole point of their 2nd forms is that it gave them super strength. Also how come they don't break out of ropes whenever one or all of them gets captured? Shouldn't they have the strength to do that?

Anyone here ever have a pet turtle? You ever watch your turtle lift its entire body weight up and over an obstacle with only their front limbs? When I was a kid I had a pet turtle who could climb out of a box just by using its front limbs to lift itself up and over.
Even fit humans need to jump and use some sort of momentum to hoist themselves up and over something. Turtles can't jump though.
In the 80's cartoon, the turtles push against a solid brick wall and collapse it. Mike also just rolls through a wall at one point. Straight up tucks and rolls on through it without much more momentum than a regular somersault. Those are just some examples of the many throughout time where they've expressed some type of super human strength.
I'm not sure if their strength has ever been solidly established like Marvel characters (Colossus can lift 100 tons), but I think they're stronger than typical humans.
MsMarvelDuckie

That wall was one of the examples I used, too. And interesting point about the pet turtle, Bombshell. I've seen a snapping turtle use just it's beak and front legs to climb a chain-link fence, so they must be pretty strong to do that already. I'd add that to the evidence.

No, its not super strength but its strength a human can't display. We have to remember that humans are one of the weakest species on earth when it comes to brute strength. We relied mainly on our brains for survival, not our brawn.
Lets boil it down to only the strength a 5ft long turtle might have. We already know they call drag and pull themselves vertically with ease, while humans can not.
Humans have the bite force of about 120psi while an unmutated snapping turtles have about 1000psi. We're not sure what the ninja turtles actually are but 1000psi seems to be the top biting pressure of a regular snapping turtle. A loggerhead seaturtle is 2'11'' on average and has the bite force of 500psi. A RES doesn't have a significant bite force but if you would shrink a human to 12", the RES is suddenly significant in the bite force range in comparison.
Take whatever turtle you like and magnify that to human size. The strength of a 1ft turtle suddenly turns into the strength of a 5ft high turtle with the brawn to match its current stature. Is it super strength? No, but its above human strength. Couple that with daily workouts that could very easily reach 5 hours in duration (not to mention the training in said workout revolves around exploiting weaknesses in human bodies) and you've got yourself one powerful creature.

Ooh, I LOVE this! I really need to reopen my TMNT science thread and put it up for discussion for their abilities. Those are some great points! I've personally seen a snapping turtle break a broom handle in half by biting it, so I know how strong their bite is. (Yeah, my uncle provoked the sucker- and she/it was a two foot probable "mama" apparently about to dig her nest under my grandmother's glider swing. Does anyone know how the turtles who can lift cars and knock down walls can't get themselves out of restraints like rope and chains? They usually don't break out of those restraints and someone with super strength should at least be able to break free from chains or at least rope.

Improper leverage, maybe? You can't get a whole lot of arm strength going if your hands are tied behind your back.
I'm gonna throw this in even though its not turtle related and because I'm an equestrian and its a good example on leverage/momentum. When you walk behind a horse, you're supposed to go as close to the hind end as possible even though the horse might kick. Why? Because if a horse manages to kick you at the full length of it's leg, it can shatter a bone. However if the horse kicks you while you're up against its leg, you'll come away with a welt.
I don't know much about the holding capacity of rope, but I have personally seen a 1200lb animal go up against a simple cotton rope and come out on the losing end of it, and that is with momentum behind the action. I've only ever seen the snaps break, never the rope though.
Does this explain all the inconsistencies with the writers? No...but because the turtle's strength level has never been specified, they can take artistic licenses with it. It will never be consistent. However, one thing is pretty consistent and thats how most every version of the turtles display some sort of above human average capability when it comes to strength and agility.

I don't see how that makes him a bad example. If anything, Hun's a good example. He's one of other few characters besides the Turtles who have displayed feats that no human could possibly do. Hun often appeared to even be stronger than the Turtles, tossing the Turtles around with one hand and so forth. which wouldn't make sense because if Hun is only at peak strength and the Turtles are super strong, it should be the other way around. Hun's shown super strength feats even though we know he's totally human. 87 Casey Jones has shown incredible feats of strength, too.

If they existed in real life, they would probably be on a par with highly skilled athletes in top shape, but not 'superstrong', like Superman or The Hulk.
In a comic strip or comic strip-based movie......they can survive having buildings dropped on them, the atmospheric conditions of other planets/dimensions, they can dodge bullets and laser beams, their weapons can slice through steel........

They can slice through steel, and Mikey's weapons broke when he fought General Tragg who's made of rock. Leo sliced Tragg with his swords in another series but Mikey couldn't do anything with his weapons. There's inconsistences like where they are afraid of falling down as it would lead to serious injury, yet there are times where they were flung through the air and landed safely on the ground with no injury.

I've always been a little confused on where the turtles are on strength, In the 4th episode of the OT Don rips off the entire side of a Van after Raph,Leo and Mikey pushed it up several flights of stairs.
In 2k3 the first time they fight Shredder all but Don fall off a building seemingly fine as if were just a minor annoyance. Except Mikey who had a chunk of the building fall on his leg.
Nick had Raph be electrocuted by a neon sign yet he was fine to still continue fighting, yet the fight with tiger claw somehow Mikey has his shell cracked just from being thrown around when other larger enemies have done the same.
There are far more examples than these but you get my point The Turtles strength has always been questionable for me.

I was referring to Casey, not Hun. The OT version of Casey was highly exaggerated. Yet we clearly see that the turtles ARE stronger, as shown in The Gang's All Here. In that one, when Mikey becomes human, he loses his strength and becomes only as strong as a normal human teenager, in spite of the fact that he still has the same body type and muscle mass. This was actually what Splinter meant when he said they would lose their "ninja skills". He was talking about the abilities granted by their mutant attributes.

This is actually one of the reasons I feel they are somewhat stronger than humans. They can survive things that would likely kill a human, and suffer less damage even when they DO get hurt! In gamer terms, we call that constitution or durability. Theirs is just a bit better than a human, but it's ebough to qualify as superhuman.

They have what would be considered low-tier super-strength in a comic book or an RPG game. Certainly not Hulk or Superman level, but high enough to warrent a superhuman rating. Just as the X-Men have varying levels of mutant powers, and very few are actually Omega level. The turtles would be akin to someone low-powered like Marrow or Beak. Actually, given his mutation, Beak is a perfect example of low-level superhuman ability, that the turtles also would fit into.

I always thought they were at peak strength but exaggerated due to cartoon logic. But shouldn't we accept that Casey Jones and Hun are super strong since they've displayed feats that no human could do, even though we know both are regular humans? Hun I know has went through punishment I know no human could survive. Even though it's not in the series, I remember in Turtles forever an entire wall fell on him. No way any human could survive that, and if he did, he should be seriously injured and crippled.
It just seems to go back and forth to me in various series where they have unbelievable strength and other times struggle in scenarios that should be easy for them if they actually have super strength.

I wouldn't worry too much about Turtles Forever. That movie ran rough-shod over pretty much all three versions of TMNT it portrayed, so anything the humans did in that one should be taken with a grain of salt. For that matter, I find it incredibly hard to believe that Ch'rell could have gotten the better of Shredder and Krang when he was just a squishy little Utrom without a body, and especially since he'd just been thawed out! That NEVER should have been possible.
The consistency issue aside, though, they do generally appear to have a slightly higher level of strength than humans across the board (IE, all versions), and as for Casey and Hun (or others), we'll just chalk that up to cartoon logic. They don't really do this as much in the comics, and Casey certainly didn't in the LA movies. Now, post-mutagen vial Shredder, on the other hand....

Actually I wonder did the Turtles ever display super strength in the comics, in both the Mirage or Archie comics? Oh then Turtles Forever thing is just one thing, Hun's displayed super human like durability even in the 2003 cartoon, it's just the wall falling on him should have most definitely killed him, but I guess some characters have Loony Toons-like durability sometimes.
I always thought if they weren't on par with Batman as far as strength goes, they'd be at least on par with Captain America. It's strange because mutants like Tokka, Rahzar, Bebop, Rocksteady, Groundchuck, Dirtbag, Leatherhead and Slash displayed super strength so one could assume the Turtles, do as well. I'm not sure if Splinter is super strong. Or the Punk Frogs, really.

Sorry got it mixed up xD I meant if they weren't as strong as Cap they'd be as strong as Batman. Cap is supposed to be as strong as a human can be without being declared super human. Maybe they could be as strong as Morbius the living vampire who can lift a couple tons. For Hun, there's not enough steroids in the world that would help him survive the things he's survived. xD And he seems to toss the Turtles around, even with one hand, implying he's even stronger than them, even though the Turtles have done super human things to and Hun is supposed to be a non enhanced human. It's confusing lol
I wish they would release an official strength scale so we could all be sure. Although I wondered if they are super strong, how strong are there 2nd stage mutations? I'd imagine they are as strong as Venom or The Thing.

As far as I know, the attribute system don't need to mean super strenght to have a high stat, as humans can on character creation. Have a stat as low as three and as high as 18 (you roll 3 d6 dice)
Raph is strongest with a Physical Strenght of 20, Mike got 16, Leo 15 and Donnie have 13. Keep in mind they are key NPC's as well, so their overall attributes are pretty decent.

That's true CK, but the TMNT RPG attribute system uses the Paladium standard rules, so the PS attribute score (physical strength) indicates how much weight a character can carry (PS x 10). A character can lift 30 times the PS. Exceptionally strong individuals of 15-19, can carry 20 times their PS, and lift 40 times their score. From 20 to 23, that increases to 30 and 60, respectively. So Raph, by that ruling, can carry 600 lbs, and lift 1,200! Mike would be at 320 and 640, Leo at 300 and 600, Donnie would come in at 130 and 390. So Raph, at the very least definitely has "superhuman" strength, and Mike and Leo are both at least bordering on it as well. Apparently, Don really IS the "weakest link" of the bunch.
In addition, the higher the PS, the greater the amount of damage one can do in combat as well, so Raph would be brutal indeed. Donnie, as expected of the "pacifist" turtle, does the least. Hmm, going by the numbers, I'm starting to wonder if the Hulk-Raph of the PD movie might be closer to the "truth" than we all thought.... And given that Mikey is the shortest, he's got to have some amazing muscle-tone to be that strong!

There's no chance in hell Mikey would be stronger than Leo, either - faster, maybe - so those stats seem kind of fuzzy anyways. Mikey would honestly be the weakest, physically, of the four. He'd be the weakest but fastest, while Don is pretty universally recognized as being the slowest.

Case closed, mon ami. And I'm guessing that Mikey's stats reflect his arm strength from using those chucks so much. That's got to be a good workout for the shoulders, biceps and triceps. And grip strength.... Whoa. And his speed might factor in with leg power. He's the most "acrobatic" of the four in fighting style, so I can see it, easily. Dancer's legs, dude! :twink: (And this is coming from someone who still has them a bit, even though I haven't done formal dance routines in years. Nah, they completely pulled that out of thin air without thinking about it too much because they didn't think people would be paying this much attention 25 years later. For one thing, Mikey's the designated "slacker" of the group while Leo trains obsessively. That absolutely in no way adds up to Mikey being stronger than Leo. It's impossible given what's long been established about the characters and their individual enthusiasm for training. In every single version, they point out that Mikey just plain isn't as serious about training, so it's objectively impossible to expect he'd be stronger than any of them, especially Leo.
Meanwhile, I could care less about "canon" versus what's common sense. Mostly because there's a ton of stuff that's "official canon" that's just plain awful and better off ignored. Like April's "secret origin"; I don't care if it's "canon", in that case the canon is wrong. The same thing about Mikey being stronger than Leo; that's physically impossible, thus the canon is wrong.

When it comes to the Atributes/Ability Score in the Megavarsal System. Physical Strenght alone isn't everything, so yeah, Mikey can have 1 point higher in the Strenght Score, as there are more Atributes scores, and Skills. And Leo gets a lot of Combat skills and Weapon Proficiencies. Since, y'know, brute Strenght isn't necessary to be the better martial artist. But then again dual wielding a Daisho require a lot of Strenght in real-life, something that might not have been accounted for in a rpg.
That said, the stats are weird at times, as Donnie got really low stats in comparison to the other Turtles, and Mikey have a 24 in Physical Prowes which is the score to show how dexterous the character is, yet only 14 in Speed Score. Theother Turtles got 11 in Speed, so much for swift ninjaness, but it could be a limitation of being a Turtle Mutant since each animal gets pros and cons.
And although I like the characters sheets, the canon is only canon for the rgp and what's been gathered off info back in 1985 when the TMNT supplement was released, and to say the least, the TMNT & Other Strangeness took a whole different route in the future supplement books by introducing mutants as common place and a post-apocalyptic setting with After the Bomb book.
And, even though the Turtles have some insane stats here and there, it is a pen & paper rgp, they are NPC's meant to be controlled by the GM, not necessarily played by the players, stats are often exaggerated for those types of characters to make them more bad ass. And it's been revised that Animal Mutants are weaker then the standard Hero in Heroes Unlimited book.

Yeah I'd say they are super strong, but not like Hulk strong. But honestly they shouldn't be stronger than like bodybuilders or strongmen (except maybe Raph) but should rely more on guile and agility when they fight since they are ninjas.
Like they'd be super agile like gymnasts but somewhere between strongmen and pro fighters in terms of strength.
I'd imagine Mikey being the quickest on his feet and and having the quickest hands.
Donnie would be more methodical focusing more on his opponent making mistakes and capitalizing and countering them.
Raph would have the most brute strength, but would also employ some technique, albeit with some lack of patience.
I always saw Leo is being the most well rounded of the group, not the strongest, Fastest or most technical but overall the best balanced, whereas the other three focus mainly on one aspect of their attack where he just mixes things up.

Leo, I'd think that you of all people would know that training isn't e erything, some people are just naturakly mire physically gifted than others, and we have long seen that this is the case with Mikey. He doesn't train as much, yet remains the most athletic of the four. That probably accounts for the higher strength in that book, and as I mentioned, his chucks require a great amount of arm strength to dual wield that well. Plus, he's small, but wiry, like a mutant Bruce Lee.

Rather the opposite. Keep in mind, as fitness trainers go, I'm a strength training specialist. More than any single thing I do, I deal in what it takes to get strong, and what it takes to build power. As a fitness professional, I'm more aware than most how you get back exactly what you put in as far as training, especially training at an "Elite" level. Effort = Results when all other variables are equal. Leo puts more work in, thus there's absolutely nothing anywhere, at all, to suggest that Mikey would be any stronger than him. Everything we know about Mikey as a character - laid back, the group's designated "slacker", usually consumes more sugar and junk food than the other three - directly contradicts that theory. Only someone who was rabidly Pro-Mikey and wanted to see him "win" in all things could possibly hypothesize that argument. Mikey's also usually shown as being on the smaller side compared to the others, and while I'm personally living proof that size isn't everything insofar as strength, it doesn't help the case any insofar as Mikey being any kind of powerhouse. A little guy who only trains 2/3s as often or as hard (at best) as his larger brethren simply isn't going to overpower any of them. It's science.
Factually, he could only really be considerably stronger than Donnie, because Donnie's actually probably even less enthusiastic about training than Mikey is, on account of it cuts into all his time in the lab or the garage, where he'd rather be. To me, I think Raph is probably the strongest with Leo about equal, but for some reason I think Raphael has more natural testosterone which can make a huge difference. Mikey and Donnie are definitely in the lower half, probably with Mikey ahead. I definitely see Mikey as the fastest and most agile (with Raphael coming in last in either category), and agree with those who say Leo is the most well-rounded, as in, while not as fast or as Mikey or having as much explosive power as Raph, for example, only trails by a hair's breadth in either category.
Keep in mind, even the "weakest" of them is still a ton stronger than the average human being, but then so am I. There's little to suggest "super-human" strength, but just by virtue of the shape they're in, they'd all have to be much stronger than the average guy. I deal with "average people" all day long... I'm amazed most people can carry a backpack. Nobody lifts enough, it's sad.
As far as what I base all this on, it's a mix of my own professional experience, and what we've seen them do in the older movies, since that's the closest thing to "real life" we have to compare to. I completely ignore any video game or cartoon examples because by definition reality is going to be "relaxed" and physics will be really inconsistent, thus skewing the data. For that same reason I also ignore the 2014 movie, obviously, because holy sh*t all of that was horrible.

I'm sorry, but I've seen too many examples in personal experience where a smaller person (with no training) is as strong or stronger than someone larger, even though neither has any actual strength training or works out regularly. I've surprised people with how much I can lift or carry with my tiny frame, when the same load is hard for someone a half foot taller and 50 lbs heavier. And I don't work out. (Unless you call walking to and from work and carrying groceries twice a week is a work out.) I've had people ask me how I manage it, but it's not that hard for me at all. Or friend we've had who was 400 lbs plus, but was also faster on his feet and much stronger than one would think. (And much of his weight was not muscle- he was terribly obese, but mostly from a medical condition.)
I know that training goes a long way, but there's still natural physical ability, and I'm not a rabid Mikey fanatic, but I can still accept him having a slightly better natural strength than Leo. (And even Splinter has acknowledged that he is more gifted than all of them, so that has to come from somewhere!)

Again, extrapolation is what people do when faced with a lack of solid physical evidence. :)
It's a stretch no matter how anyone tries to justify it. Just is. I mean, you can if you want to, but it's a stretch. The fact that it takes a lot of supposition to reinforce the hypothesis means it's kind of flimsy by default. Plus, it's fictional, and thus can never be proven, so yeah, anyone could potentially spin any argument they want to support their opinion.
If we're being realistic, though? Nah. There's three basic movements that consistently and reliably measure pure strength and explosive power: squats, dead lifts, and presses. With heavy weight in any of those three, I honestly can't see Mikey putting up more than either Leo OR Raph. Respectable numbers, sure; but he's not a powerhouse and there's never been anything given to suggest that he is. All the roles have always been pretty clearly defined, to me: Raph's the powerhouse, Mikey's the quickest, Leo's he all-around leader and Donnie's more a support role. Those things have all been pretty consistent across various interpretations, give or take.

Keeps meandering away from the main topic, as well. I think it's pretty well set now that most rational people see the Turtles as, "Really strong, stronger than most, but probably not 'Super' strong." The rest is just chitchat and personal biases. :trazz:

Good God what have I done. xD
I don't recall to many official sources saying they have super strength. Did they have super strength in the comics?

If you're talking Mirage, I don't recall them ever showing super strength in the issues I've read.

Well, I guess it boils down to which version do you take as definitive, or most relevant. For the "super strength" leaners, OT and possibly Nick would seem to confirm that they do, with 2K3 to a lesser degree. Mirage and Image may lean the other way, and I think IDW is kind of iffy. So I guess we can just say that it depends on which version we're talking about. But over all, the majority of sources seem to lean toward super end of the spectrum- if only barely.

Wait, when have the Nick Turtles ever demonstrated super strength? :tconfuse:

Wait, when have the Nick Turtles ever demonstrated super strength? :tconfuse:Pushing the Shellraiser back underground without a powercell with the parking break on with Donnie in it? Dragging an unconscious Leatherhead back to the lair? That was all dead weight too.
Not sure about super strength but they have to be strong to do those things.

Exactly. Especially the Shellraiser. That thing is a fully-rigged train car. With all that equipment Donnie had put into it, not to mention that it WASN'T on rails when it "died"! They had to push it from the street back underground, and THEN through the tunnel to the lair. That's a LONG way to push something that big and heavy. With the brakes engaged.... :teek:
