Is it me, or is the writing from Turtle Tracks right to Shredder and Splintered REALLY sharp?
Those episodes are just so perfect, IMHO. What a great opening for ANY series! The eps introduced all the characters brilliantly, the animation was real top quality (especially the way the TMNTs are all drawn, they loo more realistic) and the script was a dead on perfect mixture of serious and witty, not over doing either.
The fighting, especially in Turtle Tracks and Enter The Shredder is the best it ever was. The villians, namely Rocksteady and BeBop actually put up a fight rather than having the turtles wipe the floor with them within the first second like later eps.
Also the first season seemed to be more geared to everyone rather than just litle kids. I was really surprised the first time I heard either Rocksteady/BeBop (can't remember which one!) called April a "bimbo" in Enter: The Shredder. I'm surprised none of the Women's Groups got hold of that. LOL. The same thing where Leo "kills" a foot member and only realises AFTER he chopped it up that it wasn't human. I'm surpsied too that got past those censors.
If you had been incharge of the 80s toon back then, and could do whatever you wanted with the show after the first season, what would it be? What sort of storylines would you have come up with? Are there any characters you would've got rid of? What sort of finale would you have given the series when it was time to pull the plug? Basically list everything you would've done/kept/changed if the series had been in your hands.

Firts of, I would have hired Toei to do the animation for later seasons too, no new mutants, there would have been one writing team doing the plots. Lots of multi episode story arcs, maybe some Mirage adaptions[altough that might have been hard in the late 80's]. Well there few things.

I don't think Turtlemania would've happened if that was the way it went, Karpo :D
Thus, I think TMNT would've TRULY died out when it did; there'd be no "born-again fans" since the only aspect of it was Mirage-style, there'd be no fan sites like this one to join, no real craze...it would've been more underground than it was, heh.

Now that doesn't make sense, Batman TAS was dark and serious and premiered in 1991.

Reznorite is right about the reasons for TMNT becoming such a huge commercial success a.k.a "Turtlemania". The new show follows Karpo's guidelines closely, and that most likely is the main factor preventing it from exploding as big as the old show - too much depth and continuity (people just don't appreciate it like they should). Personally, I don't buy that whole "TMNT is too old and used to be famous again" excuse. If you think about it, who does that apply to? Parents of kids who used to be into TMNT back in the 80's and the kids themselves who are now grown up and have no interest in cartoons for the most part. So for the new generation of kids, the concept of TMNT is brand new, since they weren't around 15 years ago when it was big. Therfore, they have no reason not to like it. And because the new show possesses most of the chemistry that made the old show tick, by all rights it should be big again.

Batman TAS was serious, had depth and continuity. It was a huge success. Of course it wasn't as big as TMNT, it's true that success like that does require the show to be very children friendly. New TMNT cartoon is doing well enough, but what really limits it's ratings is Fox Box. It mainly concsists of little children's shows like Kirby etc. and it does seem that kids don't like series with too complex plots. If only TMNT could get a slot like Batman TAS had on it's time. Too bad that doesn't seem likely.

I wouldn't change a thing except add a 5th Turtle to the series, except he would be there from the beginning.
And I would just add and/or delete some dailogue, or just say the same thing someone else said. For example:
From A Thing About Rats:
(Splinter is sleeping)
Mike: "How's he doing?"
April: "He'll be fine, he just need sleep."
Leo: "Shredder must pay for this!"
Raph: "I'd like to douse him with that mutagen and turn him into a mutant hamster!"
Don: "He'll pay alright, by turning Splinter back into a human being."
Leo: "Stay with him, April."
Raph/Ben: "Come on, let's find that Technodrome!"
I would also change the names of some episodes, so intead of Leonardo vs. Tempestra, it would be Benvenuto vs. Tempestra. He would definitely fit that episode. It's about videogames! :D
Why would you want to add another turtle? Think about how horrible Venus was... But, that would be a good name for him. And the only change I would make is to keep the same company who did the first season for the rest of the show. Why did they switch, anyway?

I dunno if TMNT would've been as popular or not, I never noticed until I got back into TMNT recently how much more action was in the 1st season. The one thing I'm still looking for is everyone says the animation is better, doesn't look any different to me. Although, if it had stayed the way it was there would've been asshole parents to deal with like after the 1st TMNT movie. God some parents just need to get a life and stop being so concerned with what their kids are watching. I mean there is some limitations they had but I don't think TMNT 1 was something that effected kids in a bad way because it was dark like the comics. There was no blood or anything it was just more fighting and the turtles occasionally saying "damn" is not really that bad, most parents say that kind of stuff in front of their kids all the time.

Heh... believe me when I say that my kid is gonna be WAY more corrupted by what he sees and hears at home rather than in movies or on TV.

They probably couldn't toally change the show without parents complaining, but they could have keep it like the first season. Well what's done is done.
This makes me wonder why they never released a full length animated movie. Considering that TMNT is a CARTOON, that would have made sense at some I'm sure. But I guess we'll have to settle for that "Chrome dome special" as the movie.
There was talks about animated movie wich should have come out in december of 1997, but it never happened. Probably because they decided to cancell the show.

Actually, that's considered more of a title like "The 100 Million Dollar Man" or something.

There's no such thing as an unloved episode. Unloved scenes yes, but not episodes.
