View Full Version : Thoughts on Old Toon April?

What do you guys think of April from the 80s toon? Do you like her? Hate her? Find her annoying? Couldn't care less?

I like her. Yellow jumpsuit aside she was cool. She made a good human friend for the turtles and I really liked their interaction. Even though the old toon was never that deep, you could tell she and the turtles really cared and worried about each other all the time.

*laughs* When I was a kid I actually wanted to be April. When I'd play TMNT with some of the boys in my neighbourhood, they always made me be her and I loved it. I had this homemade Turtle Com out of cardboard and would use the mic from the Karoke machine for "reporting". I was a wacky kid. :P

Lol, your lucky, there was only me and one friend at school who liked the TMNT when we were about 4, and I used to go round to his house just to watch the tapes, no playing the TMNT characters unfortunately.

I like the old April, the way she'd do anything for a story used to make me laugh. Just about anything, and she'd be there saying 'what a great scoop!' They'd be in a building with a bomb that goes off in like 10 seconds and she's there saying 'what a dynamite story ... oops' (Michelangelo Meets Mondo Geko) um.. But she was gud friends to the Ts, and she gave them something to save during most of the episodes. I really didn't ind the jumpsuit, but it was nice to see on that rare occasion, her dressed in something different, or a different hair style.

I guess the character worked for the old show. TMNT needed to have someone to save. Even the writers joked about that...

Better seeing a lot of April than Irma. Can you imagine if she was in every episode instead of April? That would get annoying real fast. April actually had a balanced personality, so she wasn't a problem for the 10 seasons she was in.

I don't have anything against the original april. She wasnt my favorite but I dont hate her. although as I was rewatching the old eps and one of the early ones had her tied to a chair.

now I noticed 2 things.. one Arpil is stacked.. and two.. when mikey untied her.. they bounced forward.. and I swear there was a slight sound effect added... needless to say.. I almost wet myself laughing..

What?! When the heck did that happen? That's pretty spicy for a children's cartoon.

There was a thread here a long time ago asking if people ever had the hots for April when the original show aired. I can honestly say that thought never entered into my mind until someone brought it up. I don't ever recall having a crush on April when I was younger.

For the most part, I really liked her character. The only thing that bugged me happened during Season 8. The Turtles wanted to know how come she knew so much about a company called Darkwater (from "State of Shock"), and she replied that she had dated one of their employees a while back.

Say what?! Since when did April have time to go carousing with men? If she wasn't working at Channel 6, or hanging out with the Turtles, or getting kidnapped every week, when did she find the time to do that? I don't know why, but that quote from April always stuck with me and just really annoyed me.

Maybe that's why Shredder held her for ransom all the time. He was jealous of other men. He wanted April all for himself!

You wern't wierd, you were cool.

I always thought old April was hot. She always was my favorite chatacter. My favorite episode of the 192 original episodes is "The Catwoman from Channel 6". I liked the Yellow Jumpsuit better than the street clothes from the last 3 seasons also. I'll say it again, April was hot.

The reporter job serves a better purpose, as she could alert the Turtles to crimes being commited by Shredder. Didn't hate her, but I didn't really like her either.

April in the new toon is a more attractive character design and a more 'balanced' persona than the old one. The first series portrayed her as full-figured, very independent, and obsessed with her work. The new show has her as an essentially average woman. She likely is NOT a scientist; just an inquiring mind. She's good with computers, but never was she referred to as 'Dr. O'Neil'. Likely, she was just the pretty lab assistant that all ego-driven scientists want. Her personality seems far more easy-going, which sometimes seems unrealistic (sorry, girls, but that's how I see it; prove me wrong... I dare ya!). So, if this character isn't already, she SHOULD be a role-model. But, I was one of those who preferred Irma back in the day. While her voice did get grating, and she was more shallow than most on the show, she added the most realism of any other character. After all, who in here CAN'T say they've known a man-crazy air-head sometime in their life?

I can't really say because I haven't watched too much of the new series, but there was always one scene that kinda "bugged" me. It was from the first episode when April is calling the Turtles on the phone, and then she is grabbed by like 4 foot soliders. I dunno why, just the way they were grabbing her. One foot solider had his hand on her.....a hem!!

Well, Shredder wanting April is kinda strange if you consider that technically he could "have" any woman he wants by using force. But I suppose, in some sort of way it's rivalry with turtles, in which he wants to prove that he's not only better at fighting but also better at *******.

The original one is okay. Not my favorite, favorite character.

She was in almost every episode. And a hundred I never seen before :dead: .

I sorta like the new one today a little more. April 2003 looks alot young looking than the old and since the New Show is more Serious plotted she doesn't interfear with the Turtles all the time. Sorry to some of the Original April Supporters but I'm just so use to the new one when the Show aired in Feburary.

So I'm just used to the new than the old.

Okay, this is what I wrote about her on my website, but bear in mind my website is just a "joke psychological study" thing, so pretty much every character gets trashed:

http://www.geocities.com/tmntdissected/april.htm

Having said that I don't necessarily believe everything I wrote there, I have to think April was still a pretty terrible character in the cartoon. She's all work work work, risking her own safety (and therefore wasting the Turtles time because she always needs to be saved) in the name of her career. From a "role model" viewpoint - she spends most of the time being kidnapped and rescued.

But it's okay, 'cause I have this "love to hate" position on her.

J Legault
10-11-2003, 05:05 PM
I notice in one TMNT arcade were it showed a profile of April that says she's 27. While the average age for her would be close to 23. The original one is older than the new one.

Overall I like the April from the old and new toon equally. She was more a damsel/reporter in the orig. toon, and more a scientific helper in the new one. I myself kinda liked the rescue scenes of the old toon. Not that I want them to overdo that damsel thing in the new toon, but it would be cool if she was in more eps and got in trouble once and a while :) *loves heroism*

When it comes to age, the new April is my age, 23, and a fresh college grad, also like me. And I'm into computers (well graphics and alittle web design) and she's into computers (programming). So I'd say I have more in common with the new April. :) However the old April is supposted to be 25, or at least that's what the back of the figure box said, "A young 25", whatever that means. In the game it said she was 27, and in one 1989 ep she referred to herself as remaining a 28-year old hag when she found out she couldn't enter the pool of youth. I personally don't think the old April looks much older than the new April. Here's a screenshot I got of her without the jumpsuit:

where the heck do you people find these old threads from? After the last page on this thing the threads stop. And the oldest threads in the back are from earlier this year. Is there a place where old threads are archived some where? What gives? :-?

And as to April I've always liked the old toon verision of her. She was awsome. And Rennee Jacobs did a fabulous job with her. She did a good spokes person voice for when April was doing a news caste, and she gave April a perfectly spunky energentic voice when she was speaking naturally.

But is any one else disapointed that April never went out on dates or anything? I would have loved to have scene a few episodes where April goes on a date and the turtle boys tag along and jealously spy on her. That have been some good humour.

I like April's normal human character design better. Seriously out of all the female characters that have come on the old show I find April to the best drawn. It actually looks like she has a body underneath her clothes which I think is a good attention to detail. I think as far as animated April O'Neils go, classic toon April is the prettiest.

And I know that I'm probably in the minority on this one. But I thought that Irma was had a nice character design on her as well. You just got the empression that if lost the frumpy clothes and Librianian bun and glasses, that she'd be a cute girl.

I grew up on the old Turtle cartoons, and so am a great fan of the old April. Her personality was very much like Michealangelo's in my opinion. Happy go lucky, easy to get along with.

I also like her much better as a reporter than a lab tech. After the movies and the old cartoons, the novels that I have read with April O' Neil as a reporter, the new April, to me, just carries the name. She isn't the real April, just another entitiy enitirely. And I wish they'd have her decide to have a career change, and go back to the news.

Of course she's the real April. April wasn't a repoerter in the original comics. The OT April and the movie Aprils weren't the real April.

...But of course, they WERE the 'real' Aprils for their respect universes! So there we go. :)

Anyhow, I hated her as the reporter. I'd much rather have her be the Lab Tech. For mulitple, multiple reasons.

I don't entirely agree with that; I rather thought her personality was sweet when she wanted something, but she was ready to push you aside for a story. But hey, whatever. That time's over.

Honestly Jo, I think you're looking into the old toon way too deeply when it was in fact an incredibly shallow show (at least that's how it comes across to me now). The personalities were all incredibly 1 dimensional so for her to be acting in such a way is probably overanalyzing it. But then again I haven't watched any of the old toon in years and have been vocally uninterested in it for a while now, so I could certainly be wrong.

That's also true about it! Which is probably another thing I, erm... wasn't happy with. I like deeper, fully developed characters.

here we go again. I'm sick of the fact that people keep calling this series shallow. It was ment to be light and funny, with the occassinal sprinkling of angnyst and emotion. Check episodes like Beware the Lotus and Michaelangelo's birthday to see the characters actually display some actual emotion. ANd they did grow and change by the end of the series. For its time it was pretty up there and doesn't desever to be compared to more mature themed shows of today that are geared toward a more sophisticated youth than we where back in the day.

Mr._Mutant_Man

When it comes to age, the new April is my age, 23, and a fresh college grad, also like me. And I'm into computers (well graphics and alittle web design) and she's into computers (programming). So I'd say I have more in common with the new April. :) However the old April is supposted to be 25, or at least that's what the back of the figure box said, "A young 25", whatever that means. In the game it said she was 27, and in one 1989 ep she referred to herself as remaining a 28-year old hag when she found out she couldn't enter the pool of youth.

The old April was kind of vain I guess.

I remember the back of the figure box and her weight changed a few times. The original was just 115 IIRC, then a later one was 105 w/ pad and pencil, and the ninja one was like 105...we think...she won't tell us.

(Flashes of the 90's Fantastic Four)

...It just occured to me that "Reporter April" could have been parentless and therefore void of a real moral guide, several realities may have a version of April that "bled" into one of them when the instability of the Kirby Drawings tore them from their parents...except the "original" April

So out there now exists about three shallow April O'Neils

I liked classic toon April because she was spunky and didn't take crap from any one. I still marval at how even when she was being kidnapped and man handled and trussed up like an animal, that she could still back talk and sass her kidnappers with out flinching.

I really love the interaction between the Rat King and April when he kidnapps her for the first time, especially the scene where he offers her something to eat and she kicks it out his hands :o .

She was tottally going all bitch on him, insulting him, and defying him--and he was a mad man who talked to rats!! And she was still giving him attitude. You know the show really missed out on the whole Rat King has the hots for April bit. I think they could have made an interesting plot angle with that, since their interaction where so amusing, and hot! but I guess they wouldn't want to go there in a kids cartoon

The only thing I regret about old toon April is that I wish the show had let her learn how to fight. She definatlely had the spunk and the guts to be a good one and she alreadsy had alot of skills that would have made her a good fighter.

Did any body think that April led a very diffrent life before she became a news reporter? I mean the girl had some skills, she could drive a large van and avoid missils being shot directly at her (season one) she could drive a mortor cycle, and she could pick up a gun and shoot (in the sniper postion) with dead on accuracy. Now are we supposed to believe that she didn't live some sort of militant life before she met up with the turtles. Something isn't right here.

her hair style was typical for that time though, so I would say it wasn't butch looking. Actually her hair looked very full and had a lot of body to it I thought it looked nice. I did wish however that she had let her hair grow out and become longer. I think Old toon April would have looked pretty with longer hair.

I think april just had a practical approuch to doing her work. April was a real go-getter and really went into places where it would have been a hinderance for her to wear a skirt and high heels. I still marvel on how Lois Lane was able to run around while wearing a minni and pumps.

But they did change her outfit in Red Sky to a pair of mustard colored pants, blue top and a brown leather jacket. I liked the change but she would have better in jeans instead of the slacks. :ohwell:

i loved the old toon April, yet due to my love of the old cartoon, thats maybe why i chose her over the others. I easily had a crush on old toon April, certain parts of her anatomy were nice to the eye, she had a nice attractive face, nice figure, even her 80's hair looked good on her (she states it took 3 hours to get that look) and even small characteristics like her body language and the way she stood (that hand on hip posture holding the mic from early eps -im thinking of Turtle Tracks during the start). And who would turn the lady down after seeing her out of her yellow work uniform and into a dress in April Foolish/April Fool.

How many diffrent outfits did April actually wear in the series?

off the top of my head I can think of:

The yellow custom ball gown (April's Fool)

The Pink Princess Mallory gown (April's Fool)

The 17th century noble woman custom (the Four Musketurtles)

A pink nomal dress with purple tights and coat (New Yorks Shinnest)

And a punk gangster outfit she wore to go under cover as a Gang member (The Gangs all Here)

April.. what can I say? She's my then-and-now always forever dream babe and sex fantasy. As a kid I was a tad annoyed with her always getting the story and getting kidnapped in every single ep, like they couldn't have an ep without her, but as an adult I realize her getting into peril and always knowing what's up was helpful to the story. I do preffer her as a newsreporter than just owning the Second Time Around store.

As for her attitude, as tough as she was, she was still very feminine. Her hair never bothered me, and she's dropdead cute. As for her outfit, eh, yellow was never my thing, and I never seen a real reporter wear a yellow jumpsuit and white boots to work, but hey, she pulled it off by having the sexy body to properly fill it out. :) While people might have seen a yellow eyesore, I see a form fitting outfit, and my, what a form she has. :)

I loved the fact that she let her hair down (or, er, she had long hair in the Archie Comics) compared to the old toon.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you on that one. IIRC when that one couple talks to her and she tries to pass off the Turtles' noise as "her aerobics", the man seemed to rather have a liking for her. Also, now that I've just typed that an aerobics scene with that actress in Part 2 could have been interesting. If some people here seem to like cartoon April in a yellow suit, how about the movie April (Paige Turco) in a leotard? Then the turtles could have gone on about how she could burn calories by ninja training with them instead. Then that could have tied in with her apparently being able to fight in the movie now. And I have no clue where I'm going with this now...

I like that she is wearing a pink blouse, what looks to be a blazer and jeans. April looks good in pedistrian clothes, and I like how her hair appears longer.

I've read some summeries of some of the archie series and from what I read, I don't think I like Ninjira to much. No offence to any one here that might like her, but some thing about her involvement (and it seemd she pretty much moved in with the turtles) bothers me a bit.

I really liked April's new outfit in red sky episodes, and that sweet car she drove. But I could have done with out the mustard yellow slacks. Looks like from some kinda TMNT pinball game? Anyone got a pic of the cute April that posed on the side of the original TMNT arcade machine?

lol. This thread will never die.

I figure if you're going to talk April, why not come back here?

Plus, I think that's what I meant, the Gorgonzola robot I suppose. When did that ep come out? I don't remember it.

In the old series, i just thought that April was so whiny and annoying. But in the new toon, she's better.

Darn. I know the animators used to like to draw April as if she was...well endowed, but on that arcade/pinball picture her jumpsuit blatantly looks one size too small.

Also, answering that request for live action April, thanks to this site:

From the site:
"Nothing says 1989 quite like giant hair, a canary yellow pantsuit and a nice white belt. "

I find the 80's big hair kinda cute.:ohwell:

When I was a kid, I hated April! She annoyed the crap out of me. I just liked to focus on the turtles, any anthropormorphic characters were winners with me. I collected all the toys, I think April was one of the toys I didn't buy. I just couldn't stand her!

But then again, I was a weird kid. When my friends or family played house, I was the cat or the dog. And my character had no gender. I was content to play an 'it'.

Anybody here play the turtles with Barbies or something like that? I did. We played 'clinic', but the Turtles weren't their normal selves. The barbies came in, but they didn't come out!

Yeah, I was a demented child. The only time I played with Barbies if my recollection serves me right.

And wow, my post was all over the place!
