Title of the episode is "Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Buyers." It was pretty good IMO.

Isn't Storage Wars on Netflix right now? I'm sure it would be updated "eventually".

There's something kind of funny about cans of Slurm being in the turtle van, but I'm not sure what?

Kevin Eastman: The man who can't find bottom.

I wonder what that's all about. My buddy at the comic book store made a joke about how filthy rich/baller Eastman and Laird were the other day, and after telling him how Peter kinda just rides his Segway and photographs Massachusetts wildlife, I didn't even know what to say about Eastman.

I'd like to believe he's not in any financial tight spot, but all these cheesy guest appearances and (I think) him selling off a large chunk of his turtle memorabilia, seems like an indicator of just that.

They don't make sense, either one of 'em.

Kevin's just, well, he has some Hasselhoff in him, maybe. I think missing out on the 60 mil payday cut deep. He's been soft shoeing for years.

Pete jusy wants to throw clay, like the money doesn't exist.

I didn't see this until after the fact. Regardless, in the age of technology that we currently live in, the episode can be found via websites, on demand, Netflix, Hulu, or a variety of other means. Just because it isn't viewed when it originally airs doesn't mean that it isn't worth informing the community of it.

They're two completely different people. Peter just seems to want a quiet life and Kev is out there promoting himself. Nothing wrong with either really.

We don't really know how much Kevin got when he sold his half of the rights to Peter in 2000. Probably not... you know... 30 million, but probably still a fairly hefty payday. Another one when he sold Heavy Metal.

Yeah, but he continues to go back to the well. He has made numerous risky/bad deals over the years, and his buyout in 2000 was at a low point for TMNT, so, I doubt he made much from Peter, (especially given the hostility).

I'm with 2The9's, something strange about his behavior.

People are funny is all; he spent 30 years amassing a fortune from TMNT, to turn around and spend his twilight years occupied by a hobby last popular in the movie Ghost.

I had a few amazon credits for music/video so I bought the episode and it was awful. I don't watch any reality tv, so forgive me if this is old news but all the "characters" are sofa king annoying and stupid. So much forced humor and drama.

Anyways, after utilizing the 10 second skip function I muscled through it and some idiot with a grating accent found a still in box 88 Splinter and E&L's TMNT #'s 1-4.

He took them to Eastman's studio and it turns out #1 was a third printing, but the other 3 were left unidentified (you could tell #3 and #4 were first printing though). Eastman appraised them at about $750 (seemed low), then went on to sign them, increasing their value.

And did anyone else catch Kevin saying it was Peter's idea for the cartoon to change the bandana colors?

I can relate to Laird. As a introvert creative-turned-business dude, diving in head first, I don't blame him for leading a quiet life. If I had $60m fall into my lap at retirement age, you bet your ass I would retreat into the hills and start woodworking or building guitars or something.

Storage Wars has been sorta, kinda exposed for 'salting the finds' i.e. planting a few interesting items in otherwise mundane lots. I've read a few things here and there about people who purchase crap from storage lockers, and they seem to think that the hit rate the show enjoys is improbable, even allowing for a reasonable amount of unused footage.

Plus, it doesn't ring true to me that someone with a hell-valuable item would end up in the position where they default on their locker without taking the thing out first, but that seems to happen on the show all the time. Yeah, maybe they don't know how much things are worth, or they die or something, but crazy-rare things seem to pop up on that show every week.

60 Million dollars.

60. MILLION. Dollars - and that's just what he made that year.
Over the lifetime of TMNT, they easily made that twice over.

And he's taking pottery classes? He still owns a DVD player? A DVD PLAYER?

Hehehe. We should all be so lucky.

From what I can see from the pics he posts, the place where he lives is beautiful. Maybe that and his family are enough to make him happy... and the pottery.

I have to be honest here; when I dream of being rich, buying a bunch of stuff isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Not having to worry about money, or the future, and being able to spend my time as I please is what I dream about.

He didn't get $60 million, you know. That's what Viacom spent, not what went to Laird. For example, 11 of the 60 was to buy out 4kids, & it trickles down from there across the various other rights holders. Plus, to my understanding, he gave a bunch of money to the Mirage guys given they'd be out of a job. That aside, leave the guy alone, man. Y'all are nothing alike. I for one understand his position.

CyberCubed
04-18-2016, 12:28 PM
Of the 60 million sent to Laird, 10 million was to buy the 4kids show.

So that's 50 million, after that some of it was split among the Mirage employees like Gary Richardon and I remember Jim Lawson and Dan Berger said they received some money too although I have no idea how much (or how little) they got out of it.

Who knows what PL did with the rest of that money. He only has one daughter who already graduated College so he has no other kids.

Peter Laird is what, 60 years old? People that old rarely are tech savy. Or maybe he just isn't the type that wastes a lot of cash? He can use his money as he sees fit. He probably wants his daughter to inherit as much of it as possible.

Nothing wrong with that.

I know he's not that old, but many old rich people born before 1950 saved their money until their death and never really spent a lot of it at once. They just kept it for the social prestige of it, I'm guessing.

Being rich doesn't mean you're gonna automatically buy a lot of expensive stuff. I doubt I'd change my consumer habits much if I won the lottery and got rich one day. I'd probably buy more games and that's it. Everyone is different.

I think both remember how much the FW series success came with a price to them back in the late 80s/90s. The Turtles have brought them lots of financial success but lots of professional and personal stress as well.

Yea, people seem to be overlooking the fact that Peter Laird is 60 years old. I f he had become a millionaire at age 20, I'm sure he'd spend more money. As a 60 year old man he doesn't have the energy to do anything crazy any more. And Peter seems more like the introverted type, anyway. I cannot imagine him living the rock n roll lifestyle. What the hell is wrong with pottery? I took two classes in pottery in HS and actually enjoyed what I was doing... It's fun to use your hands to make things. I even made a mold so I could easily replicate a design in order to sell some items in the school store. Made a good few extra bucks in my last year of HS for it too.

I'd made my point, and was done. It's the crazy responses from the drome that kept the convo going. "I wouldn't want to blow my money either" it's too funny. As if he could really burn through it. That would take serious effort, it's not a paycheck from Walmart.

Straight talk, when you have that amount of money, there's an inherent responsibility, to do something with it. Money is power, and he's perched atop a huge pile, twiddling his thumbs. A lot of good could be done with those dollars.

Obviously there are other people with millions in the bank we could point at, but it doesn't change the fact that he's acting a little bit Scroogey here.

That's my real beef, but I get it, the new America is a cornered animal, lashing out at the slightest provocation; more PC than brains, devoid of a true conscience and hungry for the soapbox.

You really can't compare the two. It's not at all the same. You, not getting into facebook for years has nothing to do with the what the world was doing, being a late adopter makes you an outlier, not the rule.
I'm not challenging you, but you lived in a world that had facebook. I grew up in a world where we shared a land line, and getting a second phone extension to your bedroom was considered a big deal.
And yeah, gay was an indefensible position, akin to be called a child molester, or coping to enjoying molesting kids. Yeah, like that. You were mentally ill, and probably sick, with some disease.

That's the kind of attitude I'm talking about, it was ULTRA dangerous to be gay, much more than today. I'm sure the older members here can recall what it was like, very different from the openness of gay culture today.

I remember a soccer player here being rumored to be gay(he wasn't) back in 1999-2001 and it pretty much destroyed his career. Even many fans of his own team would boo and jeer him with slurs.

Also in the late-80s/early 90s gays were still being blamed for HIV/AIDS. 1998 was only a few years after that. Society's mentality doesn't change overnight like that.

Multiply that by a factor of 100 for the mid eighties dude. It was a rough time for anyone remotely effeminate. There are still pockets of discrimination, and no, it's not perfect today by any stretch, but contrasted with the world I knew, we've come a very long way.

My point is, the younger generation just knee jerk reacts to perceived slights, often without cause, because they don't understand why some folks sought protection in the first place. It becomes like an urban legend. They think any disagreement must be met with full force confrontation and flag waving.

The other day, I read somewhere that selecting a preferred race in your dating profile, was considered racist. You're kidding right? So if I don't want to date a white girl, or a latino, I'm a racist? If I don't go on dates with women outside the Black community, I'm not being inclusive? You want to tell me who I can and can't f*ck?

I'll date who I want, the end.

I'm not saying that LGBT people had it worse in the 90s than in the 80s. Back in the 80s guys like Rob Halford and Freddie Mercury didn't advertise being gay, even though most people could tell they were. They were obviously afraid of losing fans. Hell, homosexuality was a crime in my country until 1982! That's just a year before my brother was born.

My point is, people born in the late 80s/early 90s still remember the time before society became ultra politically correct like today with all the tumblrtards and the likes. Don't underestimate me, old guy!

You can date whoever you want to. People don't understand that it goes WAY beyond race/ethnicity. It's a matter of culture similarities. It's a lot harder to have a good long lasting relationship with someone with who you don't share many cultural similarities. I mean. there's a reason most people stick to their own kind and why there's still tons of different countries, ethnic groups, languages, cultures, religions, etc.

Back then interracial couples were considered a taboo, let alone being gay. I remember being a young teenager in the late 90's or early 2000's watching Jerry Springer and they had a white man with a black girlfriend and they made a big deal out of it with the families of both on stage arguing and the audience going nuts.

Nowadays nobody cares if white/black/spanish/asian/indian/etc. people all date each other. Literally who cares.

Anyway, how the hell did a thread like this take such a turn? And only because C42 considers pottery to be a weird hobby for a millionaire? This sounds like another tumblresque thread in the making.

I like how I told someone to ease up on an old man who likes crafts & created the thing we all love & have been equated with extremist SJW's as a result. 'Cause that's totally accurate. :trolleye:

Yeah, it's strange. Why are you so stressed out, C42?

Lol, None of that was directed at you man - just the world in general...
I've been mentoring while working the last few months. The kids are half my age, and they're in my ear all day with the hypersensitivity BS. It's too bloody much after a while.

I got no serious beef with Laird, obvs. Feeling my age and overworked is all.

I know we got a thread for this kinda thing, apologies; we all have our breaking point, and the kids+job stress have me at mine.

I hate those people too, probably a lot more than you do. But I was not exhibiting behavior anything like theirs nor is this is fit place to discuss the breakdown of American society.

Like I said, it wasn't at you :P

But maybe, just maybe, this is the nexus of the breakdown?

And before someone goes makes themselves a glass swan, I'm kidding.

There's no way I'm taking a pottery class. Knitting is my craft of choice. Man...the fiber stash I could buy with 30 million.
Yeah, I'd probably hold up in Western MA too if given the chance with that kind of dough.

One thing is for certain, I'd steer as clear of reality tv as I possibly could.
The internet is bad enough.
