Hi there everyone. I have been slowly building my collection of original art and sketches for a few years, and have finally got round to scanning and/or photographing most of it. I might create a CAF account sometime in the future but, until then, I will be uploading photos of the pieces I have so far to this thread. Hope you all enjoy looking at my collection, and all comments are welcome!

As you can probably tell from my username, Leonardo is my fave turtle, and a lot of my art collection revolves around him. One of the first pieces of original art I got was purchased directly from Sophie Campbell. The original Leo micro is probably my favourite Mirage issue of all time, and the IDW issue is fantastic. In my opinion, Sophie is the best TMNT IDW artist to date, and I'm proud to own some of her artwork. This is the cover to her Leonardo Micro issue, I love the atmosphere and grittiness!

When I purchased the Leonardo cover from Sophie, I also bought 3 pages from the issue as well. Sophie also did this cool sketch for me, which has gradually became one of the overriding themes of my art collection, e.g. black and white pieces with the bandana colored blue (also the origin of my username). I love the intensity of Leo's stare.

Dang, Leo is surrounded. I just get a little nervous for him thinking about that approaching battle. But his face doesn't show one glimmer of doubt. Bravery. Awesome piece.

It is a cool bandana. I'm digging the tattered edge look with it and the black stripe starting behind his eye. Look forward to seeing more.

She did covers for the Raphael: Bad Moon Rising miniseries as well as some Tales of the TMNT frontispieces, so she counts as a Mirager as far as I'm concerned. :tgrin:

Very jealous of these pieces! The Leonardo micro cover in particular is probably one of my all-time favourite TMNT covers.

unfortunately it was too long to fit in the scanner.
This is why I've begun to take a number of my pieces to work with me and use the scanner/photocopier there, it has a glass just over A3 in size. And rescan some of the stuff I did before for better images, but not everyone is going to have the option there!

I must admit I did not realise this, I did enjoy the covers to that series.

Hi there, I know I recognized your name, I've gone through your CAF gallery! I have a lot more pieces by Sophie you might enjoy seeing, for example the Leo splash page from the Northampton arc. I purchased this page from Sophie and asked if she would be open to coloring it for me since I prefer her colors over Rhonda's. Sophie thought it was a cool idea, although she stopped working on it after the page started to buckle under the weight of the watercolors. It looks stunning in person, a very unique piece.

As for watercolours, I suspect it depends on what type and how much are used. I've got some new Stan Sakai coloured pieces that are on Bristol no much thicker than that used by Sophie, and they are fine, but I do have a piece by him that has buckled a bit too (http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=874324). Possibly changed watercolours over the years. Most of Stan's modern watercolours for the trade books (covers and tip-in plates) are on 4-ply or 5-ply board, much thicker and can withstand repeated water paint strokes.

Dude, great stuff. I love Sophie's stuff too. He covers are bad ass. Plus, we're (I own the original art to SHotFC variant cover) some of the lucky few to own colored work by Sophie. After SHotFC, I think she just did B&W.

Great collection, Campbell, Talbot and Eastman. All artists that I think are essential to any TMNT OA collector.

I know what you mean, that whole situation is so messed up. I got onto Farley's list the day Archon_Turtle started the thread about him offering commission spots back in August 2012. I waited over 2 years and sent countless emails about my piece, I'm thankful I eventually received them. It sucks that others are still waiting for theirs.

Here's a commission I set up with Dan Duncan. I LOVED the front cover artwork for the IDW Collection Volume 1 hardback, but alas it was sold before I could get my hands on it. I mentioned this to Dan and he said he'd be happy to re-draw the cover to fit in with my "black and white art with bandana colored blue" theme, it really pops!

Here's a cool piece from Eric. If you follow him on Facebook, you'll probably have seen a set of commissions he did for someone late last year based on the idea of each of the four turtles drawn in the same iconic Spidey pose that McFarlane did for the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #300. Since that particular ASM issue is also a personal fave of mine, I asked Eric if he would be open to drawing a Leo for me in the same vein. He said he would on the proviso that he could do a slightly different background for me, so he added buildings and an orangey-red twilight sky.

I also got it signed by Kevin, he said it came out awesome!

Haven't uploaded anything for a while so thought I'd share the TMNT #1 cover homage that Sophie did for me back in 2013. It was done in two separate stints, the first without any background or the bandanas colored red. A scan of a work-in-progress version of the piece can be found on Sophie's DeviantArt page here:

Here's another TMNT #1 cover homage from my collection, this one was done by Dan Duncan! I asked him to draw the piece as "Mirage-y" as possible, he said he enjoyed drawing the cover closer to how the original version looked, as opposed to the version he did for the cover to IDW #12. When I showed it to Kevin, he was like "Whoa, all that crosshatching!" :O

Beautiful pieces, bud. I really love the detail Eric puts into his pieces. I need to keep a better eye on his Etsy store. Are you going to display them somehow? Being on the inside back cover of a comic might make it difficult.

How are you thinking of displaying these? I was looking at getting one myself but the only thing I could think was a double sided frame with the comic book open so you can display the signed cover one side and the sketch on the other but not sure if it would work.

You're totally right, Sophie is immensely talented. Sadly, I don't think she's taking commissions at the moment. I can't wait to see her new work on TMNT Universe though!

In other news, I received something cool a couple of days ago for my collection. I'm a huge fan of Paolo Rivera's work on Spider-Man and Daredevil, and getting a TMNT and a Dark Knight Returns Batman commission from him has been on my bucket-list for some time. If anyone has seen his painted Sideshow Collectibles print, you'll already know how amazingly Zulli-esque his turtles look! I hope IDW contacts him about a variant cover sometime in the near future.

Unfortunately, I didn't win the auction last week for the painted Mikey cover that Paolo did for the Hero Initiative (by 50 bucks, arggggh!), so instead I got a copy of the print from his website. Here's a link in case anyone is interested in one:

Signed "Trent 11," it was penciled on 11x17 bristol. Image Comics logos are printed on the reverse, along with this small pencil sketch:

I'm guessing that the bristol was left over from when Trent's "CreeD: Utopiate" series was published by Image a few years back. Anyway, I really dig the rawness of the pencils and, honestly, I'm glad it wasn't inked or colored, I like it fine as is!

Thanks dude! Honestly, I don't put my sketch covers on display much anymore, but I know a lot of people with front-and-back sketches who will get them framed the same way they would a typical 11x17 piece. I got a personal OA grail a few months ago (non-TMNT, so I won't show it off here in this thread), which means I'm busy researching 11x17 framing options at the moment!

Also, here's one more for the thread! This is easily one of the nicest pieces of TMNT art that Sophie has ever done in my humble opinion, the coloring and shading up-close is incredible, very delicate.

I know it's not a professional job but I thought it was neat all the same.

I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten onto Sophie's commission list a few times late last year, so if you like her work then you've come to the right place in 2019 :tanime: I don't know if she'll see this post but, if so, thank you so much for your patience and generosity!

First piece is a stunning mixed media (marker and watercolor) Mirage-esque group shot done on 11x17 bristol. It won't fit in my scanner as is, and as far as Sophie can recall, this is the largest piece of TMNT art she's ever done. She was kind enough to send me WIP pics when she was working on it, starting with a barebones digital sketch:

As an aside, I used to have the same issue of art pieces being too big for my scanner. Now I use Microsoft's Image Composite Editor (ICE). It's a free download and it's pretty easy to use.

Basically, you would take your piece and scan it one corner at a time. Once you have the four images (2 will be upside-down so you could get it on your scanner), make sure they are all oriented the same way (all right-side-up). From there, take your 4 images and drop them into the ICE. It'll stitch them together using the overlap in the four images and you'll have a nice scan of your full piece.

There were a few alterations made from the original to the final published look...one of which was the blue bandana.

Was the original always that way or did she add that after the fact knowing it was going to you?

Either way, it's very nice! Congratulations

Since the published cover was digitally colored, the swishy bandana coloring was all Sophie's idea! I love the surrealness of the blue osmosing into the air, as if part of Leo's being/essence leaks into nature when he is "at one" with his weapons.

As for the edit to the background, I think it's neat that it opens things up to interpretation. Personally, I think the published cover looks like Leo's training is taking place either at dusk (with the sun setting) or dawn (with the sun rising), while Sophie's OA is a snapshot into one of Leo's midnight training sessions, with the moon looming behind him. The ambiguity is one of the many things that attracted me to this piece, I've asked a few people what they see and received different answers, so it gives the art another cool layer for me.

I've been kicking around potential ideas for how to frame the Micro and Macro covers together, haven't decided on anything as yet but, as I had everything laid out, I figured I'd share this photo!

Firstly, I just want to thank those who've PMed me about disappearing photos in this thread, it's become an ongoing problem in recent months and I'm doing my best to re-up them when I notice they've vanished.

Also, a new one for the thread! This is one of my favorite recent acquisitions, it took a lot of patience and perseverance to get it completed but I'm so, so happy it paid off in the end :tsmile:

It's no secret that Jim Lee is one of my favorite artists, so my idea was to get him to do a Leo headsketch remarque for me. Since Jim sometimes refuses to draw on blank sketch covers (due to eBay flipping and the like), I thought I would take the safe route and choose one of Sophie's covers for him to sketch on. I had to gauge which of her covers had the appropriate amount of space so Jim's sketch wouldn't interfere with the printed art. In the end, I settled on the Artist Edition of TMNT #66.

The sketch was done last summer via a facilitator, and I even sent a blue pen with a special request to have Jim color Leo's bandana blue for me. There was some cross-wires and Jim instead ended up drawing Leo with the blue pen but not coloring the bandana. A turtle drawn by Jim is extremely rare, so it wasn't a big deal for me. In fact when he drew the sketch, Jim told the facilitator this was "probably the second time I've ever drawn a ninja turtle, although I have another project in the works next year." Today I saw the announcement that he's drawn the TMNT with a bunch of other characters for a SDCC 2019 print, so I guess that's the project to which he was referring!

Here's a photo of Jim starting to draw my sketch. If you look closely, you can see he has Google Images up on his phone, so he obviously had to do a quick search for reference!

I then asked Sophie if she would be open to doing a mirror-reverse Leo beside Jim's remarque. Sophie typically isn't a fan of drawing remarques but she was generous enough to do one for me, plus she also colored both bandanas. I'm very grateful to own such a unique piece.

Can I ask how you generally go about getting commissions and sketches done? I have an Iron Man original art collection similar to your TMNT pieces, but most of the time my OA come from time spent at a convention's artist alley.

Could you talk a little about your process for getting the work done? It's been my experience that pro-artists are extremely gracious or extremely fickle, with little in between. The fickle one's can make the experience less than fun.

I'd really like your insight because it might help me double done on my own original art collection. Here or PM....

Ok, a couple of new Sophie pieces for the thread, the first being an experiment in which I asked if she would draw a small turtle headsketch on black foam board using glow-in-the-dark marker. Also included on the same board is a Xenomorph from Alien that she did with silver pen - we're both huge fans of the 8th passenger, plus of course there's "The Road Trip" TMNT short story, so I couldn't resist.

Dustin Nguyen is one of my favorite Batman artists, and I've been bugging him for a Leo for at least a couple of years, so I'm over the moon to finally get one!

Lastly, with the news of Kevin and Peter selling their Raph and Don sketches for charity (both auctions are ending tonight, go bid like crazy!), I wanted to share my Leo that was penciled and inked by Peter. I asked Steve Lavigne to color the bandana blue for me, thanks to Dee for all her help making this one come true. It arrived an hour ago so I wanted to add it here for everyone to see, what a great way to end the year.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, yeah, the Laird Leo was the perfect way for me to close out 2019! I noticed the other day I hadn't recently added anything to the thread (and we're already 3 months into the year!), so I thought I'd remedy that by sharing these 4 sketch covers I was lucky enough to get from Sophie :tgrin:

I received these sketches with all the other art I got from Sophie early last year, although I commissioned them in mid-2018. I held back on posting them until she started her post-#100 run, Sophie's doing an awesome job and I'm immensely enjoying the first arc!
