What are the real 3 major incarations of TMNT?

This is too vague. What exactly do you mean by major? The most well-known? The most important?

Next Mutation is not a major incarnation but I needed a laugh today so thanks

Major Incarnations would be Mirage OT and Nick.

Mirage started the Turtles

OT brought in Turtle Mania

Nick brought back the Turtles after a bit of a hiatus and jump started the franchise

Early Mirage comics, Fred Wolf-era merchandise, and whatever is the most current.

The Option I want is not in the poll.

I would say Mirage, OT and Nick.

I mean I would say that there's kind of been 3 eras. There was the first era with the original cartoon, the original comics, and the original live movies. I guess you could lump the Next Mutation series in there as well. Then there's the second era with the 4Kids series and the CGI TMNT movie. The third era would be the Nickelodeon cartoon, movies, and newer comics.

New (Mirage)
Revamped (OT)
Rehashed (Everything else)

Those are the three major incarnations.

What the f*ck type of question is this?

Fred Wolf, Movies, and Nick are the most well known

Essential?

I'd say Mirage, Movies, and 2k3

Everything basically stems from Mirage or Fred Wolf:

- Mirage = Movie 1, Nick, IDW, 2k3

- Fred Wolf = Movies 2-3, Archie, Nick, IDW

I'm not sure you can claim Nick really stems from one certain media. They've taken a lot from Mirage, FW and even 2k3.

Nick and IDW both break down as follows:

1/3 Mirage influence
1/3 Fred Wolf influence
1/3 original material

And the Fred Wolf third is usually a bit bigger than the other two.

Maybe about 1/6.

Eastman and Laird's TMNT (Mirage)
Tales of the TMNT (Mirage)
TMNT Volume 3 (Image)

For real though... Why just 3? The quintessential TMNT experience is vast.

Basically both IDW and Nick are a combination of everything that came before.

2k3 was largely based on Mirage with new stuff. Archie started off in the original cartoon and toyline universe. The movies were a mix.

It's all a bit incestuous. IDW and the Nicktoon is one thing, but eventually we're going to end up with 4th or 5th generation Nick/Viacom TMNT universes that will be borrowing from universes that borrowed from other universes that borrowed from other universes. Like a clone, if you keep cloning the same clone over and over again eventually the DNA just breaks down.

I think you are more thinking of style vs source material.

Just out of curiosity, what's that 1/6 you see?

Just out of curiosity, what's that 1/6 you see?

Just the very, very basic most broadstrokes here and there. i.e., "It's time for Leonardo to have his Big Leonardo Fight™ with Shredder before he goes into The Coma™ and it's time to go the The Farmhouse™ before we have to Return to New York™." Not much else, really. And tonally they are in different galaxies (but that's OK, the Nicktoon is for little kids).

Yeah, I realize that too. Eventually the franchise will again move further and further away from the source material.

What surprises me is stuff in Archie and the 2k3 series actually being used again, which given those series are a bit more obscure, I never expected. Hun and Bishop have become major TMNT characters returning in all the other incarnations, and Archie Mutanimals, characters like Null, etc. have also been brought back too.

It's pretty flippin' easy to know which ones are the important ones.

Mirage is only an indie comic no one bought back then and that's why even Vol.4 is yet to finish. The real one that sold bangbusters was Vol.3 made by Image so it should totally get the credit it deserves, sure it's run got cut short but only IMAGE was able to sell that amount of comics which Mirage could only ever hope for making it the first real major incarnation of TMNT.

The OT/Fredwolf cartoon might be an easy pick but it couldn't be more wrong, if you remember what destroyed the TMNT fad? don't remember? Well it was Saban's Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Killed any chance of TMNT making it through the rest of the 90s and Saban was a powerhorse that dominated SatAM cartoons with Fox Kids which it owned and what all other SatAM networks hoped to achieve. And what else did Saban produce? That's right The Next Mutation, it is only that version which can be counted as the second major incarnation of TMNT.

And what is the real third major incarnation of TMNT, well I think it's more than obvious if you really think about it. Where are Ninja's from? None other than Japan and pretty much all major things about this franchise are influenced by that country so it only makes sense that the TMNT Manga/OVAs are the third major incarnation. What other country got their own version of the cartoon? yeah, that's what I thought.

Recently marathoned all the TMNT movies. Honestly the first 1990 movie is the only one I thoroughly enjoyed. All the other movies had too many jokes that weren't funny. Secret of the Ooze is alright. It's somewhat enjoyable. Turtles 3 isn't enjoyable at all. The Turtles look horrible. The villains were bland, so was the guards and Casey story. I like that the 1900 movie took many Mirage aspects. Watching the two Michael Bay movies was not a very pleasant experience. The first has almost no Turtles in it and the designs are horrific. Mikey is the worst with those lips. Not fond of the nostrils but that's not the worst part. Shredder and Splinter also look horrible. The second film was better. Still not very good, but not as bad. The Turtles' designs are still bad. Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang were nice in this movie. Bebop and Rocksteady are too idiotic for my tastes. Krang was excellent.

The best animated series is the 2003 series. Excluding Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers. The designs and stories are excellent! I especially love the episode Insane in the Membrane. Although it was banned, it made me tear up a bit. I felt extremely bad for Baxter Stockman and his situation. I think this series is excellent. The Shredder is bad ass in this series. The Foot and all the enemies are awesome! Splinter, Casey and April are amazing in this too!

The 1990 movie and 2003 animated series are the definitive versions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

:| Wow, a poll not fully showing every option. Couldn't have made it a multi selection?

For me, it's a simple answer with two of them, but the last one is purely subjective.

1. Mirage- Obviously without it, we all wouldn't be here eh? It introduced many of the staples of the franchise, offers a great deal of subtle drama, and stands the test of time for it's quality. Several of the storylines, notably What Goes Around... Comes Around! and Return to New York are often adapted in some capacity.

2. Fred Wolf- Although a double edged sword with TMNT viewed to the general public as a kid's property, it's still assisted in the Turtles going mainstream. While dated in several regards, it's long lasting popularity is contributed to many mutants introduced that later were reused such as Bebop and Rocksteady, Mondo Gecko, and the alien Krang. Each character has some potential for a revival in the future, some better than others. Again, it's aged considerably but still helpful, though somewhat difficult to fully embrace serious stories beyond the comic world.

A third one I can't fully say as I haven't read IDW or Archie, nor am as huge a Nick fan as before. Additionally, there are elements in both 2k3 and the original trilogy that were good, but others that were mundane. PD and NM... not going to go there. I'll edit my post if I make a decision.

Actually, there are three major incarnations of three major incarnations:

Comicverse: Mirage, Archie, IDW
Cartoonverse: Fred Wolf, 4kids, Nick
Movieverse: New Line, Warner Bros. (2007), Platinum Dunes

For me its easy.

Comics, OT, and the 1990's 3 movies.
