How do you change avatars?

I've been trying to add a custom avatar to my account, but I keep getting told that the file is either invalid or can't be uploaded. What the heck am I doing wrong?

If you followed this rule there shouldn't be a problem:

"The maximum size of your custom image is 115 by 115 pixels or 29.3 KB"

And I guess the file format has to be JPG/PNG/GIF etc.

Wow, I got it to work! The avatar setting was switched to "no avatar." Unchecking that and reloading the image through that channel fixed it.

My avatar doesn't appear with my posts and responses, only on my profile page. Can I change that?
