Rise of the TMNT toy speculation/discussion/announcement thread

Well, probably the biggest news in a while was dropped today; 2018 brings a new 2D animated TMNT series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

There's very little information on the content (which if you haven't seen yet, and want to read up, there's a topic in the Nicktoon subforum), and literally ZERO toy announcements, but I was thinking about how the toys will go. You know they're obviously going to have toys.

It's a pretty safe bet that Playmates will still have their tentacles on this. And par for the course, the first wave or two will probably start out pretty cool and then quickly diminish into 5 or less PoA underpainted lumps of plastic. I'd love to be wrong though on the latter! I don't want terrible figures!

Megabloks, if they're still under contract, will probably have Rise toys. That'd be neat. Minimates, too, if that still is a thing they'll be doing by then.

My hopes are that all non-Nick lines like stuff based on the '87 series and movies will continue as-is. Especially with Playmates' stuff... I don't want to see them re-re-re-re-re-release the bloody 88 figures AGAIN. Gotta wonder if they'll do more of them there wrestlin' Turtles but with the new Rise designs.

Ooh! I'd also hope to see the Rise characters mix into Heroclix!

It's all about paint jobs/show accuracy for me. I don't really care about scale or or articulation (unless it's some collector type figure)

Having nothing to base the designs on who knows. Judging by the current Nick stuff I'm not very optimistic about them.

Yeah, I hope it's little more streamlined design wise...and while I never really hated the 2012 look aside from the goofy gap...I know that cartoon designs these days aren't well...subtle at all.

I think how they would've looked in that dropped 2001 series would do just fine...

I dunno... my cousins and friends' kids are in the 3-7 range and they're bothered more by lack of articulation than most adults. If their elbows and knees don't move, they think it's "dumb". Granted, that's a small sample size... but it's the only one I've got so I've got to run with this data.

I did feel the same way as a lad, though. The characters in perma-crouch like Shredder and Foot Soldier were tough to get to stand or pose... all of the lack of knee joints made it tough to get do fights the way we all wanted, and the fact that characters like Traag and Muckman had unpainted deets made me a tiny bit sad. That's not to say I didn't love the f**k out of the back then... I just had tiny complaints.

That said, I really enjoyed the line early on, paint details lacking never really bothered me since I repaint most everything. I didn't become disgruntled until they quit releasing new characters, depending on Turtle Variants...though scale issues did kind of bug me.

What does everyone think about the other companies' potential Rise offerings? Revoltech maybe? Ooh I'd love for Bandai to do Sprukits. Even though they're models and as sparsely painted as Playmates' stuff I love finally having Turtles in 3.75" scale.

Imports like Kaiyodo, Good Smile and Bandai is a tough call to speculate on. Depends on how the show is doing and the designs.

I doubt we'll see more new Revoltech figure, though. The re-release was just sheer luck since they where voted by the fans to be a part of a roster of 10 figures that would get the 10th Anniversary re-release.

I am interested in seeing how the new toys will stand. The 2012 Turtles easily stood with their big feet. But these new designs already have me thinking about the trouble of standing up vintage figures. In the new design April looks to be falling backwards.

I watched maybe 10 minutes of the Facebook reveal, it was all I could take. The female "expert" playing trivia with Andre was horrible, and didn't know things such as Baxter Stockman or the Technodrome.

Raph looks a lot like an animated version of the 2014 movie.

I kinda hope your right. I'm not sure I want figures that look exactly like the art work revealed. Plus some of my favorite figures are the original basic release from the nick line.

I only meant I was 100% in for the initial release of the turtles.

That's actually how I started out with 2012 ... resolved to buy first 4 turtles, all the non-turtles, and no variants (well, only Donnie variants). But I caved on the variants after I let the series draw me in and realized it was pretty good.

Would be interesting if Nick decided to cut ties with Playmates, and it would make sense at a time where they're about to relaunch a new TMNT series. I don't think they will, but if now was the time, it's as good as any.

There is probably some mutual finger-pointing at each other between Nickelodeon and Playmates. From Playmates to Nick that the quality of their show led to toy sales decline, from Nick to Playmates that their toys were sucky and costing them viewers. The last two seasons or so of TMNT 2012 took a pretty enormous hit in the ratings... I can only imagine what the toy numbers were.

Yeah with the new show not resembling the ‘87 show as much as 2012 did I’m not sure Playmates can count on a lot of nostalgic toy purchases either. And a lot of people might have gotten that out of their system in the last five years and are now fine walking past the toy aisle. Only time will tell.

I contacted Playmates and they said that they are still making TMNT toys only for the Nick Reboot, No plans for Classics, old movies or Fred Wolf show so for the old fans we have NECA and hopefully BANDAI.

Zero interest in the toys for me. That's in part because of where I am at this stage of my life, but mostly because I find the designs to be horrendous. Pretty much as offensive as the Bay designs, frankly.

The first TMNT license came in the form of a role-playing game by Palladium, followed by miniatures from Dark Horse. Within a year, First Comics began to reprint the early issues in color volumes; four were produced, stopping at issue 11. These sold well, and Eastman and Laird were soon contacted by Mark Freedman, a licensing agent who believed he could make something of the Turtles. Freedman took the idea to a variety of toy companies, only to be turned down by those who felt the concept was not popular enough to support a toy line. Only one company expressed interest, a little-known California company by the name of Playmates.

Playmates toys is the LAZIEST toy company ever. They don't care about adult collectors they keep NECA on a tight leash on what they can and can't do with TMNT. Also they create happy meal toys and try and pass them off as quaility action figures.

But without a track record to know how much of Toys R Us' market share they are going to pick up, I would expect store buyers to be cautious. I'm guessing that stores may also be less enthusiastic about this reboot than the last one since there hasn't been that long of a fallow period and the initial buzz isn't terrific.

Where I suspect Toys R Us' absence will really be felt is in the variety of products that will be produced. Toys R Us has been a very strong supporter of the TMNT lines. They even continued to support the line after every other store dropped it following the 2007 movie and they were first in line to pick up exclusives for the line in 2012 even before the line hit stores. With them out of the picture, larger items like the play sets that were shown off at Toy Fair this spring may not receive enough retailer support for Playmates to actually produce them. Without Toys R Us, Rise of the TMNT could be restricted much more to just the figures with a minimal amount of vehicles and play sets, especially larger play sets and vehicles.

But the good news is that since Viacom bought the property, we get to have it both ways. Playmates can continue to put out toys for kids. And adults can still support NECA, SH Figurarts, Revoltech and any of the other companies that have taken a shot at the line in the last few years. And if Playmates' products don't appeal to you, that's fine as well. Because they aren't made for you.

I'm sure Playmates will be willing to offer the play sets and larger vehicles to any of the remaining large toy sellers as exclusives. The problem is finding a retailer that is willing to buy them is large enough numbers to make their production financially viable.

I look at it this way. I will probably get sets like the lair if they make them. If they don't, I won't have to find a place for another giant set in my display. That is no small task. Stores like Target and Walmart carried the Sewer lairs, so I would think they will these too.

I really hope we'll get some Import figures of the Rise Turtles, the sharp designs and action paced animation nearly demands to get a set of Revoltech figures, in the Amazing Yamaguchi line to be exact. So far that line has been mainly Marvel Comics figures, but Kaiyodo have shown off their coming Amazing Yamaguchi Batman, so it's not unfeasibke the line will broaden beyond Marvel/DC.

I can totally see Leo and Mikey in similar poses like Revo Deadpool and Spider-Man, or Raph in poses like Wolverine and Venom.

The problem with this, is most of this stuff appeals to me less on different levels. No matter how phenomenal it may look, I don't want to spend $100+ on a 12" figure that's just gonna sit in one spot and take up space. That's just not my thing. Even a 6" at $60 is too much for me. And these companies do even less than Playmates does. OH LOOK IT'S ALL FOUR TURTLES AGAIN and maybe a Shredder that'll get canceled or delayed 100 times.

I'd gladly pay $15ish for something at Playmates figure scale but is better sculpted and articulated even if just a little, no matter who makes it. Or hell, I want some 3.75" scale figures to match the rest of my collection. It sucks that collectors of that scale literally just have four model kits for this series.

It shouldn't be this hard to make a product that appeals to more than one demographic.

I doubt this is going to hurt them that much. Personally, I bought the majority of my TMNT figures from Target. Outside of an exclusive, I barely bought toys at TRU as they were too expensive in comparison.

Can we go back to the days of a slightly smaller lair? That GIANT one from 2012 took up way too much space.

Sadly in the US, the stand alone toy store is all but gone. At least on a national level, most of them had merged until there were only two left, KB Toys (which operated mostly out of malls) and Toys R Us. And now both of them are going to be gone. There are some small and independent toy stores. But they are rare. Even in the city where I live which covers a population of close to half a million people, there is only one independent toy store that I know of. And most of them that I have seen avoid mass market lines because they can't compete with Walmart on price. So collectors such as ourselves who are interested in mainstream licenses such as TMNT, Star Wars, Marvel, WWE, Transformers and the likes are left with Walmart, Target and similar retailers.

As someone said above, I wasn't buying many Turtles from TRU anyways. Target and Wal Mart beat the pricing and I'm not into the playsets or vehicles. I'm bummed TRU is going away 'cos they were a solid third option, but as long as Target and Wal Mart do their thing I'm good.

I can't really remember what the buzz or hype for the 2012 Turtles felt like, but I think the lack of time between series may end up killing some of the energy for this run. We'll see, though. We're talking TMNT and they have been around for almost 40yrs. I'm definitely grabbing the four Turtles.

I still dig what I'm seeing. I'm really excited to see these hit stores. It's depressing seeing the last of the 2012 stuff hanging on in certain places and looking so ragged, while all the major shopping places have zero TMNT toys now. It will be cool to see the franchise have a big "launch" toy aisle presence again. I love the bright garish colors of everything this time out. It's impossible to ignore, love it or hate it lol.

I don't really have a lot of interest in the new Turtles line. Not that I hate the designs.
It just felt a bit too soon. I love TMNT when I was a kid and started collecting TMNT when they relaunch the brand with the 2003 series, then 2007 they released the 2007 movie toy line and it was technically 2012 when they franchise was under another relaunch.
I feel like the 2012 series just ended last year 2017 and now we are expecting a brand new line up of Turtles products.

Still, I might change my mind but currently I might just get the 4 Turtles, Splinter and April when they are out.
The Turtle lair playset does look impressive and may be best play set I have seen in years. The ability to combine with other play sets provides great potential.

I agree, however my time to hunt for toys is thin, lots of other stuff to do. if I have to pay $1 or $2 extra per figure so that I don't have to hunt and get frustrated when I don't find them all, etc.... it's worth it for me.

Anyway, it's possible other places like target.com could stock them too (at a cheaper price) -- then you can cancel the order and switch over to their store.

I'm particularly happy about having April locked-in since with the 2012 series her figure became rare at certain points, due to lack of repacking. I suspect that might happen to this line in the same way.

The biggest omission is that the retail versions lack their unique markings... The buckle on my Leo's belt is cast in green, whereas yours has green paint apps over blue plastic. & my mystic sword has a painted handle, yours does not. I see that Leo's regular sword is in two colors but all of Mikey's are solid. I wonder if any other characters will have multi-colored weapons in the end.

In all seriousness though I am curious if it will be mail in orders. My guess is it won’t be a cut and mail.

I think it will be a code you enter online and get something mailed. Or not even that.

It will be extremely lame if a certain amount of pizza points only gets you access to a digit code to unlock a digital prize such as a game.

In Leo’s case, he gets a single colored skateboard, no paired wheels, and the mystic sword was intended to was a non translucent handle. Otherwise the figure itself matches up to the offering on Playmates site.
Looks like Powder got the better mystic sword.
And answering the question about colored accessories: all weapons on the other figures are solid colors. Except the mutant maker: some eye detailing on the mouser looking extras.

The toy fair reveals looked good. The vehicles and the lair looked amazing.
Still, I wasn’t going to buy any of it.
That did not last. As soon as I was shown them, in the flesh so to speak, I was all over them.
The lair is a beast. I have the 2012 and movie Laura (practically identical) but both are dismantled and boxed away. I am now pretty sure when I get s text saying ‘do you want the lair?’ - I’ll say yes !! Ha ha!! I’m weak.

What is a bit frustrating is that I can’t keep it all out on display.
I have 100s of figures and vehicles in storage boxes that take up a room on their own!!
Through this 2012 range I was determined to keep all the figures in pack and displayed on the wall - well, they just kept coming out!!
Eventually, I decided that I had to open them. I actually enjoyed that, opening a couple hundred action figures over a weekend (I opened up a lot of my classics at that time as well.)
This time around, I’m just opening them right away, but keeping the initial set of Turtles in pack.

I really like the Maker of Mutants. Lots of stuff going on there, and if course Meat Sweats is pretty cool.

I've got mixed feelings about what we've learned of the show, but the figures look awesome to me. I wish the Turtles had their markings, but I think that's asking a bit much. All the accessories look fun and Mikey comes with stickers for his board! The Turtle Tank and sewer lair look dope too. Might be my first vehicle and playset in a LONG time. Thanks again, DVD.

Yeah , not too sure about the new show, as it looks like a radical departure from anything that’s gone before.
2 x 10 minute ‘shorts’ per episode!! Time will tell,
The 10-11 min JL Action show turned out nicely, and I found it quite amusing. I wasn’t looking forward to it, as I had really liked the previous JL (more serious) shows. I can’t see these 10 min TNNT being serious, at all.

Anyways, I do like the figures.

Thanks for the additional Splinter pics. He can hold the staff-sword pretty well! Oh and it's dual molded... brown wood hilt and metal blade. That's an improvement over some past splinter swords.

Well, here is the way I see it. I'm getting the first wave of the toys, for sure. If I don't like the show, or if the show is a huge failure and gets cancelled in a year or two... at least they tried something a little different, and these turtle toys will join my collection as something of a curiosity.

And like Pixel Dan very correctly pointed out... rather you like the show or not, if the show does well with kids and they sell a lot of toys, it's good for older fans no matter what. Because it keeps the license hot and in people's minds... and opens up a lot of doors for adult collector stuff to come out that's in the design style of more preferred incarnations.

Personally... I really hope someone does a line of IDW TMNT toys someday, because it's clearly one of the most hugely untapped areas of the fandom and could be the source of a lot of great figures.

I've been thinking/feeling/saying this since Mateus Santolouco's first run for IDW. His character designs are SO DOPE. His Turtles, Splinter, Casey, Shredder, Koya, Bludgeon, and Leatherhead would be great additions to a TMNT collection.

I'm glad they are taking the tooling on their female figures more seriously now. After many years of bad April figures, only towards the end of the 2012 line did things start to improve and now it looks like that will thankfully be continuing.

By the way, looks like street date for these in the USA is OCTOBER 1ST so be on the lookout and hopefully they will start popping up places earlier than that. I still have a full set of the basic figures ordered on amazon, just hope they drop the price on them before they ship, or I might have to make some changes.

My original plan was to just bust these guys out of their packs, but then decided to just get two sets!! Visually (as Toys) these are really cool.

The figures really do look pretty awesome and while the April figure looks to have great articulation, I'm a bit bummed she doesn't have her cool glasses. Her retro signature glasses are the best and I'm bummed to see they are neither painted on or an accessory.

Update: After closer inspection, I can see they are on the top of her head. Kind of a shame that's how they are being included. I would rather have her wearing them.

yeah amazon is charging more, but at least you can order the full set through them. the hope is they adjust the price down before Oct 1st... which they might, since their site has some form of automatic price-matching when other retailers like target and walmart list theirs.

Like I mentioned in the toy sightings thread, you can find a lot of rise merch on target.com already, but they aren't carrying the single carded basic figures, at least not yet. You can find a lot of the vehicles and whatnot though. And they are charging retail not a markup.

if anyone finds the basic figs at MSRP online please share your findings. walmart.com is a total mess and I can never find anything there through searching. sorting by "new" doesn't even work.

Was out doing some Funko hunting and saw some of these out at Walgreens! One store had 2 Mikeys, one had one Raph (pictured) and the last one had Draxum and Origami ninja. Wanted to get Mikey but held off for now. Theyre $10.99 at Walgreens so I figure I can get the other brothers a little cheaper in a few weeks.

I found Mikey and an Origami Ninja at my local Walgreens (Upstate, NY). I bought Mikey right away and left the Origami Ninja. However, I'm a sucker and went back two days later and bought him as well.

I know these guys will be cheaper in Walmart and Target, but a) I'm eager for these new figures, b) my Target and Walmart typically sell out of new TMNT stuff fast and c) I didn't feel like ordering them online because that sucks the fun right out of it for me. I love finding Playmates TMNT figures in the wild.

I'm hoping to find the rest of the turtles, Splinter and April sometime soon.

Still not feeling the show, but I'm loving the figures. The Origami Ninja is weak to me because it's ridiculously hard to stand, and that means posing is out of the question. I have a Raph and Donnie, and love the differences between the two. I'll probably end up buying the lair when it's on sale. The toys have improved since the last series IMO.

So when I checked during my weekly visit today my Walgreens has indeed started a small toy section. Not too many things put out yet, but the shelf price stickers were in place. Not a damned one of them was anything about TMNT though.

No sign of anything at Walmart either. Though I'm not terribly surprised, we always seemed to be kind of late on stuff last time too. Though if there were things waiting in the back to go out you'd think they'd have started on them by now, esp since the action figure aisle in my store hasn't exactly been stocked all that well for some time.

I just went to amazon to check this out and it looks like Leo dropped too. I preordered all 4 for 8.94 a piece. Thanks for the heads up on this and now I can stop driving to random Walgreens stores.

Found April and Donnie at Walgreens. Donnie is still there. I'll probably pickup all of the brothers too, but I want to draw out the fun a few weeks.

Overall I like the April figure. She seems to be well articulated. Paint seems pretty good. Her hand grip could be a little better but gets the job done. She's a little hard to stand, but the bulk of my collection is 90's figures. She'll be in good company. It may be partly the surface I have her on too. Mayhem looks good too. Kept falling over. I put some poster tacky under him and solved that.

Anyone figure out how to redeem the pizza points yet?

But ultimately it's up to the retailers and how the toys perform.

If the lair is selling, better chance for what comes nexxt.

IF it gets released, it will be separate. There's no way they are going to make a $250+ playset. Instead they'll have two $130 playsets, or maybe it will be a little cheaper than the lair. Then you can buy one, or the other, or both -- it's up to each parent/collector. If it was a forced bundle at $250 then they would probably lose most parents, and many collectors as well.

The american version has an interchangeable “baby hand” while the canada release has “tendrils” more inspired by the show.

Mentioned it in another thread, but will here too. While my Walmart still fails to have any figures, I did see Leo and Raph's roleplay toy weapons in the Halloween department. (Didn't spot any costumes.)

I've gotten all the basic figures released so far, save for April, I haven't seen her yet, and I didn't bother with Splinter...that's the one figure I cannot gel with at all, so I left him be. I will say I dig the figures for the most part, and the articulation on all of them are pretty decent...mind you I don't see them getting a permanent display option, but my kiddo likes them.

The Pizza Points seem to be exclusive to the US.

I got all the basic figures last weekend. Honestly I like the turtles better in figure form than I do on the cartoon itself. My brother works at Walmart and had the toy manager pull them from the back for me before they hit shelves.

I'm visiting my parents in Atlanta. I went to Target and they did have some of the Rise of TMNT action figures. Surprisingly they didn't have a big selection. I saw about 3 Leo's, 2 Don's, 1 Mike, 1 Meatsweats, 1 Origami Foot Soldier and 1 Baron Draxum. They all look great though. I pick up a Mike and Don. I'm going to give the Mike to my nephew as a Christmas present and the Donny is for me.:)

You can get all 4 comicon turtles if you join their club and pay $15 apparently.

They have more paint than the retail ones but only come with their weapons and not their charged forms and Donnie and Leo do not come with skateboards.

Site says it won't be ready until the 18th. Maybe they had a huge pile of unsold stock and thought it be easier to liquidate with their club.

Still not a single drop at the Target over here. They are doing renovations, though, so maybe they're waiting. The remodeling hasn't affected the toy section, though, so I'unno. It's a small section but all the aisles are fully stocked, so I can't even see what they would move to make room for the TMNT toys. The bulk of it is WWE, Marvel, and Star Wars, and you know none of that is gonna be giving up any shelf space.

I have no idea how franchise stores decide on an individual store level what gets the shelf space. I *do* know that at this one store, both the Nick 2012 and BayTurtles figures simply didn't move. They had a big chunk of the aisle set aside for TMNT stuff, but it all got marked to Clearance fairly quickly. Is it at all possible that individual stores get to say, "Nah, don't send us a lot of ____, they don't move"? I'm genuinely asking, I have no idea how that stuff works.

I'm pretty sure I want the lair playset so I can repaint it for a display piece, but I'm definitely not going all over the place looking for it. So it'd actually be pretty nice if "my" Target got the toys. At this point I legit can't figure out why they don't have them yet, since other places are getting them.

Keep in mind that the street date was just a couple of days ago. It's quite likely that they may have just had to put off creating a home for the TMNT merch if the staff that does resets are busy with setting shelves for the remodel. You should be able to go to Target's website and look up the toys to see if they are listed as being in stock at your local store.

Yeah, I agree, if the store staff have anything to do with the remodel then they may just be too short handed to deal with all the stock at the moment. And if the toy dept is packed with other stuff there might not be too much incentive to prioritize that at the moment. Esp if they will have to take time to rearrange things to make room. But that's only my guess.

Hopefully they'll have yours out soon. I haven't looked at Target over here in DE (I think you aren't really all that far away in Jersey?) but my Walmart only just now finally got stuff out. (I guess maybe they played by the rules on the release date.) However it is just figures and role play weapons. No playset or vehicles yet.

I'll be over in the area not far from our Target (Christiana Mall) tomorrow for a work meeting, if I can remember to do it maybe I can swing in and see what ours have. If the delay has anything to do with shipments by chance, I imagine ours are probably on similar timing if you're not all that far from me.

* I can’t imagine Todd translating to a major action figure release. His big head and overall “square” design are the nails in the coffin. I can’t see the big head translating well, making him lean over on his tiny and hard to articulate body. His lack of combat ability is another actor hurting his chances. Maybe as a mini figure with another character, but no single carded toy. I can’t even imagine an action feature to justify that release.
* I was initially opposed to Warren sold on his own, but I guess the big form, which you can crack open to reveal the small one, would be a fun toy.

I’d imagine Ghostbear, F. Lieutenant, and Jessica are in wave III.

If you look at the insert, you will see the Foot Lieutenant in the Sewer Lair. I REALLY hope they stick with including smaller characters (a throwback to the original toy line). I never stopped wanting Klunk from 2k3 and Ice Cream Kitty and Chompy from the Nick show. It would be a great way to get Warren Stone.

Other characters they could be working on:

Hippo head obviously needs to be removable or be a separate head option for Raph, but on the same note I also request a second head option for Leo... cheery/funny by default in the packaging, but also please a second pouty/grumpy face and enough articulation so he can sit there and pout about it. :tlol:

Add in the rest and, providing they didn't make the designs stupid looking, I might get that set in a heartbeat. lol
