View Full Version : In-Lore explanation for the Red Sky changes

We all know that the Red Sky seasons, from a business point of view, were made as different as they were compared to earlier seasons in order to appeal to kids who were increasingly becoming attached to shows like Batman TAS, Sonic SatAm etc.

However, within the lore of the Original Cartoon itself, what do you think happened that caused the universe to take a darker tone and make all the changes (more bloodthirsty villains, a more cold and harsh world) as we know happen?

In my fan-fiction continuation I wrote it in as gasses from the black hole in Dimension X which was caused by the Technodrome being thrown through the portal into the black hole. It took Dark Water and the other parts of the U.S. government months to completely evaporate it. The red tint slowly expanded over the state of New York before it was solved by Donatello who fixed the problem he created by creating a dissolvant with dimension x chemicals. Then the sky resumes as it once was. It gives character to Donatello, established a more serious tone even if Dimension X science is applied while maintaining the old skyline.

I just took it that the Turtles were then just always active in late twilight, with the red being the remaining touches of light.

In that case I guess the explanation is needed for why they stopped going out in daylight.

Then again, maybe like PD they weirdly have a mountain just outside of the city, but it's a volcano that in their world is has woken up, lending a red hue to the air, but is never addressed... lol

In the big city, sometimes it just never seems truly dark. In seasons 2-7, sometimes those busy Manhattan streets just looked deserted. So maybe the mayor lifted the city's curfew and prohibition against vehicles driving around the Time Square? :tcool:

It wasn't just an animation change, the tone and style was drastically altered unlike say, the animation between seasons 1 and 2.

Besides, isn't thinking hard something you would expect in a forum full of hardcore tmnt fans?

The changes aren't that big, the show doesn't feel radically different from S1, it's just a bit more serious which is fine, the stakes got bigger.

I guess in universe interacting with the 2k3 turtles made them realize they needed to be less goofy.

Assuming Turtles Forever and the Nick crossovers took place during Seasons 3 and 4, this led the original Turtles to realize they had to be tougher and better fighters.

Which is pretty much why the show starts getting geared more toward action from Season 6 onward and the Turtles have more traditional fight scenes again than the slapstick fights from Season 4.

Honestly, I wonder more about April's sudden change in eye color from dark pupils to light blue during the Red Sky era.

My theory for the changes seen in the Red Sky Seasons are a little bit complicated as they involve the Nick crossovers, but here goes:

1. The episode, Trans-Dimensional Turtles takes place after the season 7 finale of the Original Cartoon, "Shredder Triumphant". Krang has just lost access to the technodrome, which is stuck in Dimension X so he contacts his old acquaintances in the Kraang in help getting the technodrome back. He even hopes he can impress Krang Subprime by destroying the turtles and make up for his past mistakes which led to him being banished into 2D Earth. He is unsuccessful however, and is banished again as both sets of turtles manage to defeat him and Subprime, once again seperating him from the technodrome.

2. Krang tries to retrieve the technodrome again, this time with the assistance of Shredder, and is successful as they both manage to transport it to the bottom of the Earth's core before the events of the second crossover begin. They then try to conquer the 2k12 Universe again, almost succeeding but ultimately failing as Nick Bebop and Rocksteady betray them. The 80s turtles take Shredder and Krang back to their dimension and send them to jail, while the Nick turtles send the technodrome back into Dimension X, this time in the middle of a black hole in order to ensure that Krang cannot regain access to it. 80s Bebop and Rocksteady also renounce their villainy, and it looks like everything has come to a perfect closure in the world of the 80s turtles, or has it?

3. The 80s turtles are living their life as usual, before noticing that strange alterations in their universe are occuring due to their meetings with the Nick turtles. The sky takes on a permanent red hue and the 80s turtles decide its best not to meet their counterparts again, in order to avoid further Dimensional Disturbances from occuring. Meanwhile, Shredder and Krang spend the next few years in jail, and they slowly grow more hateful and bloodthirsty for all the times that the turtles defeated them as they have time to ponder in jail. They also grow much closer to each other, not bickering much anymore. Even Bebop and Rocksteady, who have grown bored of being good guys and missing their old bosses, decide to finally free Shredder and Krang and return to their old routine.

4. The events of the Red Sky seasons are finally set in mention, as the 80s turtles have grown older and more serious as well as learned to fight using their weapons directly from their Nick counterparts. They hear the news of Shredder and Krang having escaped from jail with the help of Bebop and Rocksteady, who now take refuge in the Hall of Science Building with plans to bring the technodrome out of the black hole in Dimension X. They dread the possibility of one of their schemes causing even more Dimensional Disturbances within their world and start relentlessly pursuing the villanous duo in order to finally put an end to their insanity.

I think I've said this before, it's mostly aestethic changes and toned down humor, it's not as jarring as people pretend it is. Most of the "more bloodthirsty" villains are new, they're not in contradiction to any previous presentation.

But if you want to pretend the changes are more drastic than they really are, let's just say the 1987 cartoon ended in 1993 and this is a silent reboot.

Yeah, this is one of those things that's best just to not think about. It's kind of like in the late 90's when Batman: The Animated Series became The New Batman Adventures. There's no in universe explanation for all of the females on the planet becoming less sexy.

I bet that if humans did capture an alien in real life responsible for crimes in the human world such as genocide, destruction of public property, he would be tried as long as he has the ability to reason like people (which Krang does).

I have quite a few more and ways of integrating Agent Bishop and General Blanque into the 1987 cartoonverse.

The thread about the four and a half year dead period where fandom was confined to the Ring of Green and ninjaturtles.com as run by Molly Bode adn later Dan Berger? I was doing the above.

Your theory has a hole in it as it tries to incorporate the crossovers with the 1987 cartoon. The '87 set have visited the Mirageverse twice and seemed like it was their first time both times. Trying to make a Krang a rejected utrom exiled to another Earth makes little sense. Not to mention the behavior of the '87 set being so cowardly and fighting pizza goblins? The two separate crossovers just cannot fit into the 1987 cartoon.

The only crossovers I counted were the Nick ones, I think there are too many irreconcilable differences between the Original Cartoon and Turtles Forever to make it canon.

Even for Mirage, Turtles Forever has an awesome depiction of their turtles but it really didn't put continuity on its priority list, as there is no way it could take place anywhere in Volume 1, Issue 1 where Shredder was still alive. Nick's depiction of Mirage on the other hand, doesn't really have any continuity errors.

The problem with Nick is #1 Krang is not an utrom from Nick banished by Kraang Prime for trying to blow up all of reality. That was Ch'rell's thing and Krang stood against it as he is a conqueror. You have to keep the universe around if you want to rule over it. I also had issue with the Nick Turtles teaching the '87 Turtles how to fight. It felt like it was downgrading "my" Turtles.

I also have other ideas I can share and I also want to hear/read others of yours about the 1987 cartoon universe.

Turtles Forever and the Nick crossovers had a different depiction of Krang's intention. In the former, he wasn't as insane as Chrell, but in the latter, he was a megalomaniac intent on destroying the entire world. While I thought Krang and Shredder siding with the TUrtles in TF was very cool, I thought their depiction in Turtles Forever was more accurate as they really wanted to destroy the entire world in the Original Cartoon lots of times, such as in the Big Blow Out when Krang ordered his Rock Soldiers to open fire on earth as soon as it entered Dimension X. He most likely wanted to terraform it into a Dimension X like landscape.

I really didn't mind the Nick Turtles training their 80s counterparts since the 80s turtles did have a different fighting style dependent on cartoon physics like pushing cardboard boxes and using fire hydrants on villains. Not to mention that long after, the 80s turtles were kicking shell competently in the more realistic world of the Nick turtles later on anyway. Atleast its much more accurate than having the turtles do noogies, not take anything seriously, cower away from battle and cry after trash cans get destroyed which they never did in the old show.

I want "my" Turtles to do the instructing not being instructed. Yes, its favoritism and being very picky in how they are depicted. I would have loved to have David Wise on board as a consultant for such projects. I know they were silly. The harder edged red sky was how I view them in how I want them portrayed. Just Shredder and Krang no Dregg and Carter.

So I have an in-story idea of how to get April back at Channel Six, tie Krakus in with Burne and tie him with Landor and Merrick, give Rat King an origin that makes sense of his actions down to his affinity for redheads, how to work in Agent Bishop and General Blanque, a conclusion for Dregg and Titanus and an antihero Razhar and Tokka.

Dude, the original Turtles were never very good fighters. I love the original cartoon, but let's face it, they literally are the worst fighters of all the cartoon Turtles. Even in the more "serious" seasons like Seasons 1, 7, etc...they were still just doing basic martial arts.

The amount of fighting skills and enemies the 2k3 and Nick Turtles faced were far more dangerous than anything in the original cartoon.

I have to agree with Mr. Cubed. There were times in Red Sky (and I assume before) where all of Raph's action consisted of just him throwing his sais. Like, that's all he did. Then there was that Mona Lisa ep where all they did was run from the monsters when you figure Raph the ninja turtle should at least put up a fight.

There was an ep where Shredder had em surrounded by tons of Foot Soldiers and they mostly did 'well, it was nice knowin ya guys' jokes when you expect the 4 of them to be able to ckean house.

I would have loved a 4th wall joke where the 80s turtles realize they are no longer limited by 80s budget animation and do all sorts of sweet ninja moves and even have Mikey say 'Cowabunga, I can use my chucks again!'

You had Hoffman in the original series, who tried to capture the turtles in "Invasion of the Punk Frogs".

CyberCubed

There were usually various government agencies in the various series looking to capture Turtles, or other mutants and aliens. Mirage and Archie comics did the same thing with the U.S. government or Darpa capturing the Turtles or aliens. It took all the way till the 4kids series to give us an actual character like Agent Bishop to basically be the main character behind these storylines.

That's probably why he worked so well among other things because before that we just had various grunts/soldiers looking to do the same thing. Dirk Savage from Season 7 is another similar concept, or Darkwater from Season 8, or Hoffman from Season 2 who went after the Punk Frogs. Bishop and the EPF essentially replaced all these lesser concepts and unified them going forward.

True, he was a one-off character unfortunately. Potential there. My idea had Agent Bishop as Wesley Knight's boss and the one who conducted the experiments on Alex Winter. That made me get a kick at the IDW developlment!

Hoffman could be the brother/step-brother of Dirk Savage, who was inspired by Hoffman and wanted to take on his relative's crusade after the mayor swept it away in embarrassment following the revelation of the shadowed crusaders alignment. Hoffman's name was mud and motivated Savage into buying into A.J. Howard's campaign. As for Hoffman returning? I would have to think about it.

Maybe Krang's super portal generator started splitting the dimensional barrier accidentally and it permanently caused the sky to turn red? It might explain why we got a green sky in some of the outer space scenes in Season 8 and 10.

I sort of see it in that sort of way, that the multiple dimensional crossings occuring in the 1987 turtleverse (to either Dimension X, other turtle realities etc.) would eventually cause dimensional disturbances that cause changes to occur in their homeworld.

About the Nick crossovers, although this is a bit off topic, I love how you can either see them as the end of the 87 show (Shredder and Krang finally captured, while B and R turn good), or as a pathway into the Red Sky seasons. I see them as both, as canonically taking place between season 7 and 8, but also as the final closure for the "Classic" era of the 80s show in a way that is happy and satisfying.

My impression of the changes was that it had to do with constant attacks by forces from Dimension X and that the TMNT were unable to cope with this much going on without buildings being destroyed and such. The red sky could have been the result of a failed plan to conquer the Earth.

To be fair as well, Shredder and Krang were extremely dangerous when the technodrome was moving (even more so than many 2k3 and Nick villains) but were defeated by either their own arrogance, Bebop and Rocksteady screwing up or the turtles using cartoon logic.

The Nick crossover actually does them justice by showing the technodrome absolutely decimating 3D New York City while all the military's weapons have no affect on it. They were even more dangerous in that since there was no cartoony way to beat them, and they had a much more competent mutant duo. Even the classic Foot Soldiers, who sucked in the Original Show, were very threatening in this as they held their own against the EPF, the turtles, Mighty Mutanimals and Human Foot Soldiers.

The biggest villain were the censors. What could they do without being held back is my question. Shredder could have done more than blow up the Channel Six building. Of course! That is the true reason the TMNT went to the point of goofiness and Shredder/Krang were inept to getting their battle machine capable of rolling over anywhere and everywhere in exchange for ruling over it. Why was Ch'rell more threatening than Shredder? Weakened censors! Why did Shredder kill Hamato Yoshi/Splinter in his fourth attempt? Further weakened censors!

I used Jonathan Crane alias the Scarecrow as a basis. He was a university student in chemistry wanting to use chemicals for the good of humanity. He was also in love with a red head who I created was a rival station head to Channel Six and later Burne's wife and Tiffany's much older sister. Rat King and her were college sweethearts, but his isolation and befriending lab rats alienated her. A chemical explosion cost him his sanity as he brain damage and he lost his internship. Regretted by his love he retreated to the sewers wanting a better world for those who cared about his work, the rats.

Did you publish those stories somewhere?

The first two, Titanus Strikes Back! which focuses on closing loose ends of Titanus, giving Tempestra an origin tied to Titanus, April's return to Channel Six in a different role, and a connection is made between Burne Thompson and Krakus.

The second one, Something From The Past focuses on The Shredder able to return through the rock soldier military base's unstable portal. He recruits the two mutants that got away, Razhar and Tokka describing himself as their father who has looked for them ever since the Groundchuck/Dirtbag mutation and Shredder taunting Donatello about his causing the sky to go red with dimension x contaminants as well as making Razhar and Tokka anti-heros. It introduces Terra Braxton, Burne's rival and love interest, the college girlfriend of Rat King and much older sister to Tiffany. She is my only original character and was mainly created for plot point connections.

The others I need to clean up a bit as those are years old and need some expanding on. If there is interest I can find time and there to release them.
