It's happening. It's all colored, retitled "Urban Legends" and gets 3 brand new issues to conclude.

Cool, I guess IDW wanted a proper ending to put in the trades.

That's pretty awesome. Hope it doesn't make it too hard to consider canon to Mirage, as some of us like to do. :trazz:

As this is my favorite run of the comics, the prospect of more from the original team is pretty exciting. All the same, I feel like we had sufficient closure with the unofficial issues, so I'm not as hyped now as I would've been had those never come to fruition, admittedly.

If this comes in the form of one complete trade, I will definitely buy it.

Wow! This is so damn cool!

I really hope this will be released in hardcover as well!
Ecstatic.

I also wonder if this is Nickelodeon opening up the gates a bit on "adult-tmnt".

Edit: Apparently not. This has been in the works for a while. Perhaps high sales of this series can help enforce the message though!

Edit 2: Is it just me or is there a lot happening with TMNT lately? The DLC for Injustice 2 releases, new show premiered, now this announcement. I wonder if it's building up to a film announcement.

That's the most important take away from this, I think.

Though there's the fact that apparently they were asked to do this a few years ago. Before the 30th anniversary issue, unless I'm confused.
It could still be a sign, but we haven't seen anything else since then that points to this conclusion. As far as I can remember.

By who? Nick? Never happened. I mean, Gary and Frank were told kind of, "Be ready... this may be a thing!" by IDW years and years ago and I think Frank even did a cover for it he shared on his FB a little while ago when things were looking particularly grim. It's only ever been a strong interest in doing it from IDW, a push from Kevin, and a "No" from Nick. That it's a "Yes" now is very interesting.

Jesus, I'm on the internet literally all day long. The one hour I take a break online to play some videogames is when this is announced. Amazing how everything you want to see always gets announced when you're offline.

As everyone else has said, this is amazing, especially for those of us who followed Image when it came out.

Big question: Do the Image writers know how Volume 4 starts? I think it would be rather important for them to read at least the first couple of Vol. 4 issues so they know where Mirage picked up from. At the very least the Turtles need to be all fully healed.

Oooo, boy, yeah. I was really tempted to pick up a used copy of the IDW deluxe hardcover of the first movie adaptation last week (great to see the Eastman layouts), but that tooty-fruity Shredder outfit just killed it for me. I might have to wait for the next store-wide sale.

From what I remember the coloring on the last batch of Tales trades that we got was pretty good. The coloring was really only bad oddly whenever Shredder showed up, but at least we have the black and white Ultimate Collections so it doesn't matter.

I think the Archie stuff and Forever War is a very different situation, one probably dependant on sales for the existing Archie reprints. If there's not even demand for the existing stuff, it's probably hard to justify new stuff of it. Are the Archie trades still coming out?

Though if "Urban Legends" is successful, completing long lost stories like that may be a go to.

Or hell... if it's really successful, I'm not even sure we can rule out even more Carlson and Fosco stuff in that universe. Why would they, if there's a demand (unless this was like a one off exception thing from Nick)?

Big question: Do the Image writers know how Volume 4 starts? I think it would be rather important for them to read at least the first couple of Vol. 4 issues so they know where Mirage picked up from. At the very least the Turtles need to be all fully healed.

I don't believe Frank or Gary have ever read any of volume 4, no. Though they don't really need to... the core "problems" separating vol. 3 from 4 will be addressed. Little stuff like Leatherhead might not be. Repositioning Karai, I'm not so sure.

Yeah, IDW is releasing the CyberTurtles Archie trade in a few months. They're almost done with the main Archie trades (although they never collected the specials and mini's)

This is the best news I've heard since rejoining the TMNT community.

If we support this, we can only increase our chances of IDW doing the same for Volume 4 and Archie later down the road...

I'm really curious to see how the official conclusion differs from the almost-official conclusion Andrew put together. And also whether or not Gary and Frank care about dovetailing into Volume 4 or just go out with a bang doing their own thing!

Also, wouldn't it be great if IDW released this bimonthly? 2 issues a month, so we can get through this in one year instead of two?

I love this idea. You see DC and Marvel finding great success with this format lately. Might be a fun experiment for IDW to do it, and with a series that’s basically already produced.

Yeah. I don't know what's a good justification. I've bought every volume of the Archie trade for two reasons: it's Archie TMNT so I need it, and to support it with my $. But I imagine there are many who don't care for the trades (already have the single issues, don't like the format, etc) but would gladly throw their money at a new story.

This would be nice, as long as they aren't doing variant covers for every issue that comes out... blanks and Eastman covers and whatnot... just reprint them as they were, start to finish and then do the three new issues and done. Then trade collect it for those fans...

Then move to volume 4...

The problem with a Vol. 4 conclusion is PL just can't be bothered or motivated to finish it. He's the only writer of that series, nobody else can finish the series but him. He could have published new Vol. 4 issues through Mirage from 2010 till now...and in 8 years he chose not to.

If IDW came to him and said "we want to reprint Volume 4 and finish it... all you have to do is write it or even just tell Lawson and/or Eastman where the story goes", Laird COULD conceivably agree.

It's still a long shot. But I firmly believe we are now the closest we've ever been to a Volume 4 conclusion since Laird put #32 up on his site.

I think this means even less to a Vol. 4 conclusion than it does to seeing "The Forever War." Bobby has said they won't touch it without his involvement and he hasn't shown any interest in years.

Now, would this news about "Urban Legends" motivate Peter to do more vol. 4, make him even less interested in doing more vol. 4, or not even be on his radar? I have no idea.

Not a super fan of the name "Urban Legends," for the record. Maybe it's harmless but it could be construed as "these are just tales, not canonical."

CyberCubed
02-20-2018, 08:55 PM
Urban Legends is a name I'm fine with, aside from simply calling it "Volume 3," it's a name where fans can decide if they want it to be canon with the rest of Mirage or not. It bridges the gap fine, and assuming the last 3 issues don't do anything too crazy or contradictory with the start of Vol. 4, then it'll be ok.

Now if the finale shows us Leonardo stab Karai in the heart and die, then I guess these can't be canon.

On paper it's the fairest way to go. Let fans decide if it's canonical or not, not stepping on Peter's toes in definitively saying it is but not definitively saying it isn't either.

This is such awesome news! IDW is really making miracles happen lately. Trying to decide if I should wait to buy the last 3 issues & TPB or go all-in just to support more projects like this happening in the future. (Of course I finally completed collecting the original run just a couple months ago.) Kind of bummed it will be in color which won't match the rest but that's what sells I suppose. Still so hyped about this though, seems to bode well for the brand on so many levels!

I suppose Lady Shredder will be Karai then, and not Tang Shen's sister because Gary and co. know Andrew did that and Karai was the original plan.

I hope they can reconcile it that Karai still makes peace with the Turtles again. All I want is that, the Turtles getting healed (Raph and Don should be the easiest, I don't know how they can explain Leo regain a lost hand), and besides some minor stuff about wherever Leatherhead was teleported to on the transmat, I don't remember any other loose ends.

The "big" kicker is who Pimiko will be. I did go against the notes there. To serve the greater narrative (what Gary couldn't know would be written many years later in Tales V2, I mean), I thought. No idea if that's still the case and wouldn't say if I knew.

The fact that when PL decided to continue the Mirage comics in 2001, he chose to name it "Volume 4" instead of "Volume 3" and picking up with Vol. 2 left off says a lot.

That was PL's way of acknowledging the Image series happened, without having to deal with any of the baggage left over from the series. Image will always be Vol. 3 of Mirage, simply because there isn't any volume 3 otherwise.

Andrew how do you feel this canon release will overwrite your conclusion now in official canon? I see Gary paid mind to that in the interview.

I think they'll approach it in exactly the way they would have back in the late 90s, finishing that same train of thought they had when they did #23 without missing a beat. Which is not the way I approached it. I approached at the time as if, "Well, OK, we're in 2009, there's lots of stories since then before, within, and after now... how can we take general notes from what Gary was going to do, some assistance from Frank, make an Image finisher work within all of that, reconcile everything, even Tales V2, playing off of these new pieces to still reach a relatively organic handshake with Volume 4?" These are two very different things.

CyberCubed
02-21-2018, 12:45 AM
Now I guess there's two alternate canons to Image's conclusion, I guess it will be fun reading two different takes. And the latter ties into one of the Tales story arcs ending.

According to that article the first Image trade comes out May 16th, that's still a while from now. Any idea how many issues? That would give us a good indication when the finale is coming. If the first trade only collects the first 5 issues...we probably aren't getting the 3 new issues till 2019.

It's issue #1 of a 26-issue series a la Color Classics that's releasing on May 16. The article doesn't specify if the book is monthly, but assuming it is then we'd see #24 in September 2020.

2020 is a long time away. How do we know what can change between now and then? The sales of the color classics could be poor causing IDW to cancel them. From what I remember the Color classics of the old Mirage issues sold poorly, the only reason they continued as long as they did is for the trades. Or IDW could lose the TMNT license by 2020, any number of things could happen between now and then.

From the sounds of things this deal was planned for awhile, how long does it take to write/script 3 comics? Especially since they already have their notes and story ideas of what they wanted to do? Why don't they just release the 3 issues ahead of time whenever they complete them...and then of course by 2020 release trades with everything.

Mmm, I'd definitely rather them just do trades up front. This is not a popular series by any means (unfortunately)

Their selling value on eBay these days might beg the differ. But who knows on the actual shelves, month in, month out... though there is whole generations of fans curious and into Image TMNT after the fact, posthumously. And IDW behind them, there is an actual push.

As a reader, I don't see the worry. This is like if a "Agents of Wakanda" TV show was announced tomorrow and we have a guaranteed seasons 1-4 and a guaranteed ending to it, no matter the ratings anywhere over the course of it, with guaranteed 4K Blu-ray box sets to it after the fact. What's wrong with that?

About the whole thing, though, if one were to ask me how I feel about it personally? It's a mixed bag. You can imagine my situation. People and some articles are saying "Well, now Image TMNT is getting a PROPER conclusion!" and they're not wrong. But... I spent about 3, 4 years of my free time making a carefully calculated "proper" conclusion with a large group of others who all poured months and years of their time into it, wholly above board with Frank and Gary, and with their input, notes and even artwork. Ya know? I feel like we did a "proper" conclusion, within the boundaries of what we could do, and maybe even some above. We have a cover pencilled by Fosco and inked by Eastman, done in good faith. When the sale to Viacom/Nick happened, Kevin Eastman and I went all over the place, shopping this Image conclusion to Boom! and Dark Horse, when Erik Larsen himself was fully willing and ready to print and publish it at Image. I did conference calls with Nickelodeon's publishing ladies to push this, sweating and pushing this over the phone. It was a, "This is interesting that you would want to continue this old thing, but... we'll let you know." And this was the Wild West! After the Viacom sale but before the IDW deal, but not long before. But still I hounded the Nick execs. It was only when all avenues were exhausted (and keep in mind, up until this point this was a pitch that was 100% written by Carlson and drawn by Fosco, all the way, I had no stake in this beyond just brokering the deal) that I went, "Well crud, let's just f***ing go ahead and do this, because no one else is." And we did, and I'm very proud of it.

That said, none of that is Gary or Frank's problem. They're just guys who got the rug pulled out from under them back in 1999 that were on board the various pitches I was pushing to where it seemed like they could be pushed to realize a conclusion. And they're both amazing guys. I've sat in Fosco's living room and he's made me the most amazing pasta, and been taken by him to the most amazing pizza in Chicago. Let's give them the rug back. Gently. AND it's in color? You should see some of my letters in the lettercol of like... every issue of Vol. 3 berating this, or being 500% fanboy. Or don't, actually. Yeesh! 16, 17 year-old me is an even bigger a**hole than 36 year-old me!

Very stoked this is happening.

Maybe it’s fitting in a way that your Image TMNT ending is forever in a limbo of canon, just as the whole of volume 3 itself is. Turtle timelines are always ambiguous. The legacy of TMNT comics has always been rooted in independent creators carving their own path, which your project lives up to. Just my two cents.

I dunno, I know the 120 or so issues Mirage put out after this straight up ignored it, so it does seem like the best possible title. Even if the conclusion issues makes it compatible, it's still going to be a "let's never speak of this again" deal.

Anyway, I'm gonna ask Bobby when this is coming out, can't see it in the article.

On the subject of Urban Legends, I'll be picking it up issue by issue. This is the kind of thing I want to support, so I'll throw my $4 down a month.

I didn't buy the Color Classics issues because they didn't really offer anything that interested me and there wasn't really any pay-off for supporting the reprints (didn't care much for the colors, either). With Urban Legends, there's much more reward, with rare material getting reprinted for the first time and the promise of 3 new issues waiting at the end of it. The colors I could take or leave, but since I already own all the black and white versions, I'll consider them a bonus (hopefully more care is taken with them than the colors for the Vol. 1 Color Classics).

As for the New Conclusion vs. the Old Conclusion, I don't even see it as a "vs." thing. Andrew's conclusion attacked it from a unique angle, endeavoring to tie the Image series back in with the Mirage continuity. From the sound of things, IDW's conclusion is just going to be the Image series continuing on as if it hadn't been abruptly cancelled, doing its own thing. Both are unique approaches and can be appreciated on their own merits as splinter timelines.

It'll be nice to get a proper end to the Image series since I don't consider any fan works to be official in any way shape or form whatsoever. It'll be nice to have a real conclusion. I'll be picking it up monthly to support it and getting the collections.

Should they use Image's original advertisement for their series again:

This advertisement from 1997 cracks me up to this day. "These ain't the cartoon Turtles you watched as a kid. You grew up. So did they."

It's like the perfect amount of 90's edge. Extreme 90's for sure.

Most original TMNT fans were becoming teenagers by 1997, it was like the perfect time.

I’ve only read Mirage, Adventures and IDW. I sadly never read these back in the day. I had a deprived upbringing. My small lame town had zero comic book stores, no 7/11 stores and not even a Blockbuster video.

I’m really excited for the new release! I’ve been thinking about getting the back issues for awhile now but every time I look the prices are crazy. Like over $200 to complete the run. And the condition is questionable. I hope no errors are made in these reprints. I am curious if any extra content will be included. I can now get all the issues in mint condition at half the price.

Image is an obscure series. It ran from 1997-1999 when the TMNT fad was pretty much dead and buried and all the original fans were now teenagers or had moved on from the franchise. Since the series itself was very violent, in black and white, had all red bandanas, etc. most younger fans didn't get into it at the time and Mirage fans were probably put off by the Turtles mutilations.

The late 90's was also a time before people got nostalgic about old franchises, it isn't like the 2000's when old franchises were suddenly receiving a "nostalgic revival" and people started thinking about old stuff.

Also keep in mind the late 90's is when the internet was still in its infancy, there was no social media, news sites barely mentioned the Image comics, it came out at a time where nobody knew what was going on. I picked up several Image comics myself when it came out, but even then I wasn't able to read it in full till the early 2000's.

As a youngster, I remember the "bite" this series seemed to have compared to the cartoon/movies, but even to Mirage a bit.
They seemed like the perfect TMNT for my older cousin, who always insisted at least one of the turtles had to die gruesomely while we roleplayed in the backyard, to which I would usually negotiate one of them be captured or lose a limb instead. I guess I was a squeamish little boy.

Even so, I loved the books and didn't shy away from them. They were just a little different, and while I didn't fully understand how all the pieces of the franchise fit together, given my young age and lack of internet, I never considered it a problem, even if it was a bit confusing.

If something from the Image or Mirage comics seemed different from the cartoon or the movies I was first accustomed to, it was just all the more fascinating. It was also something I could grow into and find myself appreciating more as I aged into my teens and left the cartoons behind for the most part.

Yeah, that'd be ideal for me as well. A dream book, really! I'm guessing it's not too likely, but for many of us, its lack of color was a big part of the appeal. Frank's heavy black/white contrast style was intended to be seen as-is. I think IDW is for a slightly older audience than what the current tv shows and movies target. Are you talking about something equivalent to R rated films? I like that idea. I'd also prefer B&W for the new issues so they match the original ones. However, I think some of the very first issues could benefit from colors. I can't remember if it was in the letter columns or on these forums but wasn't it revealed that Fosco had been drawing in a style that left room for coloring on those first few issues? It made the art confusing at times because it lacked some definition, which hopefully the colors can provide.

Yeah, I can understand that Gary doesn't want to change his original vision/ending or whatever he had planned for the series, but given Image started off as a direct continuation by Mirage and we now know how Vol. 4 started with "time passing" to give Image some room, it should be fitted back into continuity as neatly as it can.

From what Andrew said over the years when he was working on his conclusion, Gary planned on ending Image "properly" with resolution with all the characters. Raph's face was supposed to completely heal, Don would grow a new shell (similar to IDW Don has a new shell), and Leo would regain his hand. Lady Shredder was supposed to be Karai, but I'm not sure how the resolution of that would be and if she would declare a truce again.

Not sure about Pimiko's fate, or if they ever had Leatherhead show up again, but I don't think that really matters. Leatherhead was covered in Mirage in Tales stories and Vol. 4 as just being on Earth again. The Utrom Dr. X who Leatherhead befriended in Image also appears in one of the Tales of the TMNT stories in Mirage.

I don't know the answer to either question. I'm sure Leatherhead WOULD have shown up again at some point, had things continued chugging along for another year or so... but I have no idea if he was intended for any kind of, "Uh oh, we better wrap this up now" story.

No clue on Pimiko's actual fate. I got the impression that really none of the distinctively Image characters were going to die... be it Puzorelli or Pimiko or anybody (Frank seemed a little sad in the unofficial conclusion that "hey wiseguy, you killed all our people off!"). Maybe King Komodo.

You shouldn't assume Lady Shredder is Karai. I actually got a couple of different answers on that one. One is obvious, one is like, "Oh yeah! I completely forgot about her! But..."

Nickelodeon has never had a problem with this material as far as I know-- they just wanted to make sure it rolled out at an appropriate time in the reprints timeline and, more importantly, wanted to make sure all the legality was above board in regards to the different creators. Between The River, Sky Highway and North by Downeast, there's enough TMNT/Veitch material to fill its own trade similar to Michael Zuli's Legends release (though I understand Zuli's was easier to publish since he signed Eastman and Laird's retroactive work-for-hire contracts and Veitch didn't, but Sim never signed that thing either and IDW was able to deal with him).

Sorry, not intentional, must have just missed it!

Nickelodeon has never had a problem with this material as far as I know-- they just wanted to make sure it rolled out at an appropriate time in the reprints timeline and, more importantly, wanted to make sure all the legality was above board in regards to the different creators. That's been my understanding, but i've largely been on self-imposed sidelines for this project, so my knowledge could be off.

Thanks! I assumed it was just an off-limits question or you didn’t know, no so worries here. Very interesting. Appreciate it!

Regarding The River - I think this series would look wonderful in color.

I see back in 2012 he told me, "Nothing can happen until there is an agreement between myself and Nickelodeon." To which I asked, "Have talks broken down or does it seem like an agreement will be made?" To which he said, "Nick refuses to deal."

I don't think it's quite like the Dave Sim thing where Sim was like, "Hey, run #8 all you want, reprint it all you want, #8 can belong to you and you don't need to pay me ANYTHING as long as we understand that Cerebus is my character and will always be my character."

With Rick I think it's more, "Those 3 issues of 'The River' are my issues. Every page, the concepts, the story and new characters, all of it. I want to keep the exclusive rights to these issues and characters in perpetuity... and if you want to reprint them, you need to work out a monetary deal with me."

Which is a very different situation.

Ah, yeah, that is a big distinction.

Seems like royalties for a couple of trade paperback reprints would be small potatoes to a corporation like Viacom, but their reluctance to deal doesn't surprise me.

I disagree; for me, it doesn't feel separated at all or even that drastically different in tone. It FEELS like an integral part of Volume 1, and other standout issues treated it as such.

It's a shame, more people would get to read his work if they're re-printed. I understand he considers them his own stories, but c'mon, he still wrote for the TMNT franchise something he knew he didn't own. All his Vol. 1 issues were pretty good and it's a shame IDW had to skip over them.

The fact that we're now even getting Bodycount and the Image series reprinted by IDW of all things, two series that were extremely violent and I never thought Nick would allow them to reprint, makes the lack of Veitch's work sting even more.

DrSpengler
02-23-2018, 12:47 PM
The absence of The River and Sky Highway in reprints is one of those gaping holes in the narrative that does a disservice to Volume 1. Not just because they're genuinely good stories, but for what they added to the character arcs for the cast that were further developed in the in-house Mirage stuff. Without The River and Sky Highway, all the subtext about Casey and his infatuation with his Chevy during City at War gets lost. And the aforementioned Sons of the Silent Age directly references The River and is a sequel to it with Raph's storyline. Reading Vol. 1 without Veitch's issues is like reading a novel with a chapter missing.

North by Downeast isn't as vital as those two, but I just love that miniseries and it's probably the least seen of Veitch's TMNT contributions. I mean, I still find his Vol. 1 issues in the bins at cons for cheap prices, so they're out there and available, but his Casey Jones miniseries pops up much less often and is tougher to come by.

One reason I feel this way is the dialogue between the turtles. I can't recall other issues where they address eachother as "Brother Michelangelo!" or "Brother Raphael". It's subtle but seems starkly different from the usual way they address eachother.
The other thing is his stories often deal with mythical aspects. You see this in other TMNT stories as well, but I guess, for me, it's just a certain mood he seems to set.

I love Veitch's stories for the record and I do think they fit in with volume 1 as well as anything else. Especially due to the reference in "SOTSA". They have a unique flavor, and that's a good thing. Again, that's just my opinion.

My favorite thing about Veitch TMNT are those amazing covers for "The River". In my mind, issue #26's cover is completely iconic.

I really do hope his stuff gets reprinted some day. A lot of new readers missed out on his stuff.

I think it's easy to forget that most of these Mirage or now Image reprints are brand new to like 70% of the current readers nowadays. Outside of places like here or some other old fans, the vast majority of current fans never read any of these old Mirage stories before. It's why it's a shame if they don't get a chance to read everything. These reprints are mostly aimed at new readers as much as old fans.

Fantastic team. My only concern would be not knowing if Lawson’s current style would show off the dynamic movement and action that Kevin’s layouts are capable of. Whenever I read “RTNY” part 1, I’m reminded that Kevin truly has “the chops”, and his reputation is earned.

Love both Eastman and Lawson though so I’d definitely want them there. An ideal team for sure.

I remember hearing about this back in November or December of last year. I'm super psyched that it's actually happening. The Image run is the first run I bought when it was originally being put out.

This is great news!

Oh, and count me in as far as wanting The River reprinted as well. Those issues are quintessential TMNT lore. I think I still have my old TPB of it somewhere around here... It might be at my parents' place.

Hell, Veitch's run of Swamp Thing is what got me into the character. It's a shame that legal situation is the way it is. Viacom should just give him the money he wants and print his work. I can't imagine he wants all that much money -- It's probably just a drop in the bucket to Viacom.

So I just reread most of the run this weekend, and I have to say, it really goes downhill near the end. Crude and dated dialogue, exposition out the wahoo, and just some awkward character work. And how often do characters really need to go on beer runs? Felt forced.

I'm almost willing to chalk this up to rushed deadlines and a never-ending feeling of looming cancellation that the writers were under, because I went back to the first several issues after and they read much better. Hoping the conclusion will be the best of the run.

As a fellow fan of the series, do you have any feelings on how it progressed? Maybe it's just me, but I read from about #18 onwards, not really enjoying it much, but went back to the first several issues after and even the pencils appeared more detailed and the panel layouts more creative. Seems like there was an initial boost of adrenaline that wore off by the end. The series literally started off with a bang.
I really enjoyed the few pages we got in the 30th anniverssary issue though, despite the limited and basic nature of the story. Hoping for more of that.

And I like beer as much as anyone else. I even love "you had to be there", the story where Mikey is drunk as hell. But this reads like a 13 year old trying to bring up beer as much as possible, in order to make his story seem more adult.

Also there are cringey lines of exposition like "Mommy April wants you, daddy!" ....."Mommy April?" Kids don't say that. Find a different way to let the audience know that April is the mom.

Then there's "Call me Lady Shredder! Though I'm not very lady-like!" or Raphael calling Mikes girlfriend "retarded" leading Mikey to insinuate that he received a blowjob from her.

I love a lot about this series. Especially as a piece of TMNT-history, for how far out and unique it is. It just really struck me that the series isn't as great as I once thought. At least the later issues. Still, as I said, I'm greatly looking forward to seeing the issues in color, reading the conclusion, and hopefully picking up a hardcover omnibus of the series.

But one thing I love about the Image series is the experimentation with the visual element of the group. Raph with Casey's mask, Leonardo with one hand, two of the turtles wearing masks and two without. It just looked cool. Donatello's design wasn't good, but the effort was there and gave the team an interesting look without resorting to making them all different shapes/sizes.

I agree with you entirely that their experimentation with their designs was interesting. All of their looks were striking (in a good way), except Donatello's. From Vol. 1 the only stories they didn't reprint is Rick Veitch's 4 issues. "Sky Highway" and "The River trilogy." They also didn't reprint "Turtle Dreams" which was issue #41, because it had some original owned characters there from the guest artist. Besides that everything in Vol. 1 has been reprinted.

All of Volume 2 has been collected, as well as the first volume of Tales which was 7 issues.

Unfortunately the Tales V. 2 trades stopped around issue #26...and we haven't gotten a new volume in quite some time. Tales went on for 70 issues, and we only have like 25% of it collected so far. I hope they start up the Tales trades again with the stuff they haven't collected.

An "omnibus" that's not a hardcover is a sad omnibus.

I assume that will be printing format for the third time through the material, hardcover omnibus in original black & white. The Tales of the TMNT Ultimate Edition if you will.

This is a trend multiple comic companies follow, reprinting material in multiple formats, each time adding something to make it a little more desirable so that they get people to double dip on stuff they already have (and why wouldn't they, it works!). This trend seems even more likely on licensed comics, as they have an upfront fee that they need to try to recoup between sales of new material in addition to the cheaper aspect of reprint older stuff.

Likewise, I fully expect (and sincerely hope!) we'll get a more "deluxe" set of reprints of the Archie Adventures series at some point, with higher quality scans and the minis and tie-ins included in order to capture the complete run. This would follow the trend they had with regards to reprinting the Marvel Transformers comics when they got the license.

With New Animated Adventures each of the two Omnibus got released paperback only. However Amazing Adventures Robotanimals, Tea-Time for a Turtle and The Meeting of the Mutanimals all got hardcovers. The Ultimate Collections first got hardcovers but now doing paperbacks at nearly the same price as hc. I’m confused trying to make sense out of anything IDW does when it comes to hc and pb.

I personally love a good hardcover book. I watch YouTube videos on hc releases DC, Marvel and Image comics release and hope/dream one day TMNT can get that sort of treatment.

no.

issue #22-#47 were stories done by guest writer/artists that MOSTLY didn't take place within the Mirage Eastman/Laird continuity.

there are just a handful of stories that are canon, or could actually fit within the Mirage time-line.

some of this also has to do with work-for-hire contracts.

here's an example of some of what you can expect from the Mirage 'Guest Era'.

Most of the guest issues were written to take place in canon, outside of the wacky parody stuff like Mark Martin's or those Mcweeny comics. Or stuff that was blatantly an alternate universe/take on TMNT like the "Souls Winter" trilogy.

All the other guest issues fit in fine with Mirage, they were written as part of the same world even if Pete didn't acknowledge the events in them. Which didn't matter because they're all essentially self contained stories.

there were some really good stories in the guest era

issues 29 & 43 drawn by AC Farley

issue 33 drawn by Richard Corben

^ this was the first time the Turtles traveled through time as far as i know.

i also really enjoyed issue 37 by Rick McCollum & Bill Anderson

they're all essentially self contained stories.

that's one of my favorite aspects about Mirage vol. 1

I am disappointed that this series will have 3 covers for each issue...

I honestly think they should have done an A cover, all in color and then a B cover, in black and white... A being a new cover and the b cover being the reprinted original cover....

I kind of hate the idea of spending $12 a month for reprints to be complete despite already having the entire original print run including the fan conclusion.

Really enjoyed re-reading this series and just finished yesterday. Great work Andrew and company on the finale...

Gorgeous cover. Some of the stories from this volume haven’t aged well, for me, but the new artwork, sheer novelty of this rendition, and the need to show support for adult-TMNT products will have me picking up some issues and any potential hardcover released.

So happy its real about the Image conclusion. I have the fan made conclusion and yet Gary and Frank say its not gonna be exactly the same as that. Gary's even re-read the series and gone through his old notes for the final issues. Now to have to wait the 2 years just to get the 3 final issues is gonna be a pain. I wonder if I should re-buy/re-read the series in color? Thats the only plus and I always thought it was hard to read Vol. 3 because the art was literally only black and white. I mean if it had some duo tone shade or even the black/white/grey color tones like Tales of TMNT Vol. 2 series had it'd been easier to enjoy the art. My only gripe.

That looks okay so far... but how are they coloring less-known characters like Pimiko and the cyborgs? Are they gonna be garish, muted, silver and chrome, black and red?

It's characters like those that I'm concerned regarding the coloring; anyone can color the four Turtles and Splinter. Those colors are known; safe...

Volume 3 looks to be taking to coloring a lot better than Volume 1 or Tales; probably the lack of duo-tones, but I always kinda felt like Volume 3 looked like it was being inked with the possibility of colorizations in mind from the start.

But like Cylons said, the real test is going to be how OTHER characters will be colored. Will Digikore finally start using the covers for color guide references, or are they going to be making up pallets wholesale like they did with much of their Volume 1 and Tales work?

I'm hoping they put a bit more effort into this and at least look at the covers instead of diving in blind like they usually do.

Just looking at those first two pages, the coloring makes it seem more...Mirage-ish, kinda? I dunno why, but now it really does seem like Mirage Volume 3. Maybe because Volume 2 was in color and now this being in color feels like a direct continuation of it, (which it technically was at the time).

That small glimpse is really pleasing to my eye. More so than I expected based on previous colorization's by IDW.

It nearly breathes new life into the series. Can't wait to see more. I really wish we could speed up the wait to the conclusion though. I think those issues have a chance of feeling like Image TMNT in a more modern era. Excited to see how they turn out.

I'm not sure, but since Image characters appear in this book often aren't they "forced" to make sure they color them correctly? I can't imagine the Image writers who will be writing 3 new issues to complete this series will be too happy seeing their characters colored incorrectly. Like if Savage Dragon is suddenly colored blue or something, it would be weird as hell.

I don't expect anything like that to happen though.

There's no reason for anyone to feel insulted. It's a revival of a niche series, with the original cover available, along with another variant by the original artist, a new cover from Kevin Eastman, and, yeah there's a variant with a radically different version of the TMNT on it, that you can buy exclusively from an online shop.

It just seems extremely minor, considering what an unlikely treat this is.

I concur. While I thought that the sharp contrast of black and white had a certain appeal for the Image Comics, they rarely gave me a sense of completeness or even artistic intent in the same way that the early Mirage duo-tones did. At times, the rigid contrast could made it hard for my eyes to read the page and follow the logic of a layout.

For the most part, the early Mirage issues always look worse when colorized, but I expect the opposite should be true of Image. I don't know if Guzowski is the guy to make it happen, but if he botches it, he'll have no excuse.
